I made a post already but I’m too lazy to find it but in my things if your daemon settles as a fish or other aquatic thing that needs to normally live in water, you will not suffocate or dry out and die

because humans have had daemons since we stopped being animals and became people.

If every human whose daemon settled as a fish dropped dead a minute after settling because they suffocated or their organs collapsed under their own weight like................................

if that were the case...daemons would never settle as aquatic animals because they would instinctively know after? what? thirty thousand years? that settling as a goldfish means death.

Like. You don’t get to choose when and where your daemon settles.

So in my things, daemons can turn into fish and ambibians and whatever and they’ll be fine. They’ll still be able to breathe, just like they’re able to talk no matter what form they’re in, even though that should be impossible with animal vocal cords.

They’d need mobility aids, yes, because a dolphin can’t exactly walk, but having your daemon settle as some kind of fish isn’t a death sentence. 

Because if it were, it wouldn’t happen.

(also, related, daemons can eat whatever they want. A daemon settled as a dog can eat lettuce and a daemon settled as a cow can eat meat. Think about how much it would suck in cave-man times if your daemon settled as a panda and you didn’t even know what bamboo was)

Well that’s a fun question.

Can daemons use the morphing technology?

I decided like, five years ago that settled daemons are no different physically from normal animals so like.

I...I guess they can. Because animals can gain and use the morphing technology.

But it’s really only useful if they’re already settled, because unsettled daemons can change in less than a second and morphing takes at least a minute.

But like seriously though wolf daemons are “”evil”” for the same reasons that we always think of wolves when we’re looking for animals that act like humans.

They work together to solve problems. They take care of one another. They’re the ancestors of our beloved dogs. They’re intelligent.

And they’re dangerous.

Wolf daemons represent horrible, murdering/torturing people because werewolves are a myth almost everywhere you go.

And not modern day werewolves who are just misunderstood good guys.

Traditional werewolves. Men who turn into monsters at knight and kidnap and murder women and children. Monsters that turn out to be your neighbor when you manage to shoot the thing at night, and then the next day the farmer at the next house over turns up fucking dead, bled to death in the woods with a bullet right where you hit the demon wolf.

Because, as Wednesday said, serial killers look just like everyone else.

Wolves are smart. They work together. And they represent everything dark about humanity. Our bloodlust. Our greed. Our capacity for cruelty and evil.

Symbolically, wolves are the monsters walking in our shadow. They represent everything bad that humanity is capable of.

If someone’s daemon settles as a wolf, that means that, no matter what else they might seem, they are capable of killing and torturing children in cold blood.

But when I am literally talking about canon, do not fucking argue with me? I am literally talking about what is literally right there in the fucking book.

It is literally right there in the fucking books that people with wolf daemons are 100% fine with killing and torturing children.

That is a fact of the fucking books.

That does not have to be a fact of projecting. No one can tell you what kind of daemon you’re allowed to have. You can do whatever you want.

But you cannot argue that it is not a fact of the books.

There’s A FUCKING difference. Do you see the difference? Because it’s really starting to piss me off that I have to explain the goddamn difference every time I talk about wolf daemons.

Oh, this is a really interesting perspective! I guess the thing that’s different to me, is I don’t “want” one form or another - my forms aren’t about preference, but about an accurate representation of me.

Yeah but even if it’s only subconsciously, no one is going to choose a form they don’t like. Even if you’re trying to have the most accurate form, it’s still going to be something you agree with. It’s not like you’d just let someone else tell you what form you are.

Like the thing about projection is that it all boils down to your choice. Even if you take a million online quizzes, you have the choice of throwing out the answers you don’t agree with. (aka, the answers you don’t like)

You’re not going to have a form that you hate. Because whether you think about it or not, you are choosing the form for your daemon, even if it’s only subconsciously.

Which is what differentiates us from the people in the books. they don’t get a choice, even a subconscious one.

And we do. Because our daemons are not actual, physical manifestations of our soul. They’re something we create in our minds. And you cannot separate the mind from its desires.

If someone thinks that their daemon should be a wolf, despite what the books tell us about people with wolf daemons, then that’s their choice.

They can do whatever makes them happy. Because ultimately, it’s their choice.

The characters in His Dark Materials are completely separate from projected daemons. Talking about one does not nessesitate talking about the other. Me talking about how the guards of The Fields of Evil are villains and fine with child torture does not mean I am saying that everyone who projects their daemon as a wolf is a villain and fine with the torture of children.

And that is just something people need to accept. The books are separate from projecting a daemon. Someone talking about the books and the daemons in the books is not the same thing as talking about projecting daemons. It’s not a judgement on them because they like wolves.

If I said that everyone with a marmoset daemon is selfish and never does anything unless it benefited them in some way, I’m not saying that everyone who projects their daemon as a marmoset is selfish and manipulative.

I’m talking about Marisa Coulter.

We are not in Lyra’s world. We get a choice in how our daemon “settles”.

So you can either accept that wolf daemons in canon are separate from projected wolf daemons, or you can just...

...continue defending the guards at The Fields of Evil by saying that they’re “just doing their job” and “didn’t know what was happening to the kids”. Even though Bolvangar didn’t have that name until the GOB got there.

Like,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, here’s some examples of fictional characters I’ve given marmosets to so you can see what I’m talking about:

-Fox Mulder (The X-Files), is probably the most well known, so I’ll use him as my main exapmple: He’s not working on the X-Files because he wants to help people. He’s working on the X-Files because he wants to find out what happened to his sister. He’s working on the X-Files cases for selfish reasons. Yes, he still helps people in the process, but that’s a by-product of his real goal. And his real goal is finding out the truth of his sister’s disappearance. 

There’s also: Abigail Hobbs (Hannibal) and Morgan Grimes (Chuck)

and like. Seriously. Look at Mrs. Coulter. There is nothing she does that does not benefit herself. Not even protecting Lyra is about protecting Lyra. It’s all about Marisa, and how it makes her feel.

That is why I say that people with Marmoset daemons are selfish. And selfish doesn’t even have to mean cruel and mean. It could literally just mean that they’re doing a good thing for the wrong reasons. And that doesn’t make it a bad thing.

And because I apparently must, here’s a disclaimer:

This is talking about the books, and how daemons work in the books, and in my fanfiction, which is meant to align as closely with the books as possible. This is not about daemon projecting or thought-forms or tulpas or whatever the fuck you want to call it. And if you interact with this post just to tell me that not all real live people who think their daemon is a marmoset are selfish, then I’m going to block you, because that is not what I’m talking about, and you can’t say you didn’t realize that.

people with large daemons tend to be more anxious and generally fearful and introverted than those with smaller daemons.

people with small daemons tend to be aggressive and extremely vocal and stubborn.

people with small daemons will absolutely punch you in the face if you make them mad enough

people with large daemons will verbally tear you to pieces if provoked, but they won’t physically attack you unless you do it to them first.

Small daemon = the best defense is a good offense. Proactive retribution ftw.

Large daemon = the best defense is actual fucking defense you tiny idiot

Wolf daemons signify terrible people who have no qualms about torturing children because werewolves represent the darkest aspects of humanity.

The only way to tell if someone is a werewolf is to hurt them when they’re transformed, and wait and see which one of your neighbors mysteriously hurts themselves overnight.

Like Wednesday dressing up as a serial killer for Halloween, and explaining that they look just like normal people, so there’s no way to tell them apart until you catch them in the act.

Until you cut off a wolf’s paw, and find that one of your neighbors has bled to death because of a missing hand.

The ridiculously specific and yet universal criteria for having a sooty owl daemon:

-You’re a fucking idiot who runs towards danger with no regard for your own safety because what is the point in you being alive if you don’t help others??? It’s not even that you’re suicidal. You just don’t see how you could go on living with yourself if you knew that others were suffering when you could do something to stop it.

-Every single one of your enemies gets mauled to death. By a fucking animal that isn’t-quite-an-animal. All of them. Without fail. Mauled to death. Claw and teeth marks abound. You’d think by now people would learn not to fuck with you but apparently not.

-You’re also an adrenaline junkie but that’s just a bonus, that’s not why you run into danger. If someone offered to take you bungee jumping, you’d probably say no, because why do that when I could be helping to pull people out of burning buildings???

-Oh hey look at that you’re missing an eye. Because some moron who’s now most likely dead thought “yeah I can take them.” Well, you almost fucking died, but you know what? Look at that, you’re still alive. You’ve got some cool fucking scars to show off, but you’re alive. Time to go hunt that bastard down and make sure he can never hurt anyone else.

-You also just??? Tend to be fucking rich???? With no regard for money at all???? You are EXACTLY the sort of fucking jackass who would rip a $100 bill in half. You’re also the sort of fucking idiot that carries around $100 bills in the middle of the fucking night. In fact, you just seem to carry around a ton of money wherever you go. What the hell. I mean, on the bright side, you do tend to spread the wealth around, but holy fuck. Stop ripping money in half. I am begging you.

-Okay despite the fact that most of your enemies get viciously mauled to death, you’re a genuinely nice person who just wants to help people and make the world a better place. If you see a beggar, you’ll probably either buy them food or new clothes, or just straight up invite them into your own home because, once again, zero regard for your own safety.

-Your motto in life is, “what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” and I don’t think anyone who knows you will even try to argue with that fact.

When I say that people with small daemons will fight to the death and the only way to stop them from fighting back is to kill them, I am not saying that people with large daemons won’t. But you can sure as fucking hell believe that the guy with the mouse daemon will not stop fighting until he is dead.

Because he is incredibly aware of how vulnerable his daemon is. He knows how easy it would be for him to die. So he’s not going to stop fighting unless he literally cannot move. He will not stop fighting you until you are either dead or unconscious. He will not stop fighting until he is safe.

Don’t ever corner someone with a small daemon unless you know you can take them down. Because otherwise, you’re the one that’s going to be taking a dirt nap.

Instead of “people with monkey daemons are pressured to become doctors because their daemons would be able to do surgery on other daemons”, how about like.

Doctors. Just being allowed to perform surgery on daemons? Like. We already trust them enough to knock us unconscious and play with our internal organs. I don’t see why caring for daemons couldn’t be part of their Hippocratic oath. 

Saying that only people with money daemons can perform surgery on daemons just...............really limits the job prospects of people who’s daemon settle with opposable thumbs. 

Like. Imagine having your daemon settle as a gibbon, and then getting shamed your entire life because you decided to be a professional football player instead of a heart surgeon or first responded. 

And then imagine all the kids whose daemons don’t��settle as monkeys or apes that want to be surgeons, but get told they can’t, because their daemon doesn’t have opposable thumbs.

That just doesn’t work. At all.

Like, yes, your daemon will most likely settle as a form you (or the general populace around you) is familiar with, but there is absolutely nothing stopping it from settling as some alien-looking thing that the local priest is pretty sure is an evil spirit because there is no way in hell that thing is natural.

Normally andalites’ daemons take the form of marking that appear on their body as they age. Sort of like how some animals (like deer) have spots when they’re young, but they fade out as they age. Only it’s the other way around--when they’re young, their fur is plain blue/purple/whatever with no markings except for birthmarks.

Then as they age, and specifically start to go through puberty, markings will slowly fade in. They can be pretty much anything, but they tend to follow patterns, with some being more common than others:

-Warriors will usually have markings on the tip of their tail right before the blade, and on their ankles and feet

-Scientists will usually have markings that start over their eyes, and go all the way to the middle of their back

-Medical doctors will usually have markings on their palms and horizontally along their sides

-Artists will usually have markings on their legs, and arms and legs

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of different patterns, and different markings. But as the Andalites are currently in a war and have been for several generations, most markings follows the above patterns.
