Realising this isn't really canon probably, I had just watched Kurama-and-Shiori episode way back when I first watched yyh and must have learned of Kuronue through the wiki while double-checking my knowledge and then combined this but
So Yoko was running away from the sdf and was dealt a fatal blow by Shunjun specifically, 1000-ish years prior to that moment he'd left Yomi to be assassinated by some other guy bc he needed to not have concrete confirmation that it was Yoko who wanted him dead, somewhere between that I headcanoned that this was the time period in which Yoko had met Kuronue and would lose Kuronue -
Anyway the misconception I had was that Shunjun/sdf had stolen the pendant which Kuronue had died turning back for, and Yoko died trying to get it back from them. Which true enough I don't think is canon, but it did hurt!
Alternatively that Yoko had sought the mirror of darkness once before he became kurama hoping to revive kuronue w it: having a vision of Shunjun taunting him that even if hed managed to steal the mirror and revived Kuronue they'd fail to ever reunite, bc Yoko would be dead... or maybe something worse, that demons can't be revived using this method?
Hence Kurama, when canonically introduced on-narrative, already having the knowledge that his own life would be the price to make a wish when he intends to use it for shioris sake.
If he'd met and lost Kuronue after betraying Yomi btw it just feels extra PAIN if that had backfired in the sense that his band of thieves were like “listen he sucked?? but you siccing an assassin on him isnt very reassuring to the rest of us”.
So a big reason why he ends up dying in that final confrontation, is that all his allies and friends have abandoned him as a result of him abandoned an ally himself; not even killing him personally, he hired an assassin when he should've been capable of doing that himself. Alternatively, that he himself grew distrustful and paranoid of his coworkers to the degree that they leave him one by one...
Finding Kuronue could have felt like a blessing to Yoko after losing his friends/allies, losing him like the heavens were laughing at him. Him entering a very poor headspace as a result of that, and not being at his best when making a last attempt to re-capture something good in his life... and then dying to a young man, eager to use his death to establish himself in his new workplace...
... and then being reborn, to someone he intended to leave, who actually does love him and will sacrifice herself for his health and well-being... and it turns out, she's fated to die if he doesn't do something.
And it turns out, the very thing he'd hoped to revive Kuronue with, is the thing he hopes to heal his mother with.

I realized I hadn't shared this here yet! Here's my 3D printed Quaternion Julia Set! See I first learned of these things reading about it from a pretty well known graphics programmer Inigo Quilez. Theirs are a lot prettier! But yeah, if you're familiar with Julia Sets and the Mandelbrot set already, this is basically that but we use 4D complex numbers called quaternions instead of the regular old complex numbers.
Tumblr media
The original shaders I used to render them were unity CG/HLSL implementations, but this particular one is from a GLSL implementation over on my shadertoy you can find here: https://www.shadertoy.com/view/tdt3W8 It isn't exactly the same one that I've printed here (I've long lost the exact seed) but it is reasonably close. The way I printed it was I stole some marching cube code for blender and just plugged in the SDF function derived by Inigo Quilez, tweaked the values and eventually got a mesh I can print!
Tumblr media
This uh, isn't the one I used lol. It did take a few tries to get one that was both visually interesting and also printable. In fact i wasn't even using the marching cube algorithm at first. I was using Poisson Surface Reconstruction with a python script that casted points to form a point cloud. Basically I was attempting to create a mesh like you would with photogrammetry, just with an abstract object rather than an actual thing or place.
Tumblr media
The results were, well not good lol.
Tumblr media
*Continues digging through box* I know its around here some where, I should have the one that works. Okay this still isnt it but this one is using the same method, I just wanted to use this for a vrchat world instead of using it for 3D printing. It gets the point across lol
Tumblr media
But yeah. 3D printing is really cool if you're into a bit of math

Hey! I'm back to talk a bit more about alpha tested image rendering!
This is a continuation to my previous post, so if things are not making any sense you can go back to that one and take a look ;)
Just a little recap about my arbitrary goals, I want to draw a circle on the screen (and maybe generalize for more shapes in the future!) using as base a small texture like 16x16 to a bigger size, lets say 256x256.
the setup we ended last time with was:
generate a 16x16 texture that is: - black if the center of the pixel is inside the circle - white if the center is outside
magnify the texture using bilinear scalling (interpolating the inbetween pixels with the nearest 4 linearly)
alpha testing the resulting image to get sharp corners instead if blurry areas
Tumblr media
The astute among you may notice that the final image does not look like a circle at all, I mean, it is less blocky, and less blurry, so an improvment for sure, but we can do better.
The key thing to notice is that by applying those steps to the image to upscale it, basically we redefined how we are describing our shape, instead of a pixel directly describing the color we want to paint, we end up with something more like describing a shape by a math equation, wherever this math equation is bigger then 0.5 we are inside our shape, and wherever it is smaller then 0.5 we are outside our shape
Noticing, this we may do some cool things with the first step, If we know that what we care with the image is the position of the resulting 0.5 (grey) contour, we can paint our initial pixels in a way so that when we scale our image with the bilinear interpolation we get an isoline that better represents a circle
One method that is very common is to paint each pixel in the original image with the distance to the nearest point in the shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there is just a few problems that we have two big problems with using this:
The distance defines our shape as the exact point where d = 0, and since we are sampling points and linearly interpolating we end in the border interpolating something between 0.02 and 0.03, so we are never getting a perfect zero, maybe the best we can do is consider as zero anything smaller than some arbitrary epsilon, and end up wiht something like this for the border:
Tumblr media
We also cannot easilly differentiate what is the inside and outside of our shape, in our previous technique we could just check if the value in our scalled image was bigger or smaller than 0.5
there is a technique that kinda solves those two problems, and it is so useful in so manu areas that it gets its own name it is Signed Distance Fields (or simply SDF)
the idea is that we do the same thing that we did before, but now, if the point that we are looking at is inside the shape we say that the distance is negative, so now:
Near two points in the border we are interpolating between something like 0.02 and -0.03 so it clearly will always passes trough 0
to check if we are inside or outside our image we can just check the sign!
well, let the result speak for itself (in this case, i draw positive values as shades of purple, and negative as green)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and now, our border, is way better defined as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nice! now our circle is looking way more circular now, and we are still only using our old 16x16 texture!!
Well, actually there are still a few small things that we can improve, the first thing is that our texture color values only go from 0 to 1, so we had to cheat a little using an rgb texture so we use different colors for positive and negative values (we also, also divide the distance by the size of the image so we never actually get smaller than 0 or bigger than 1), this also makes so the bilinear interpolation is a little funky, since it interpolates the channels separetly.
So what actually gets used in games and other media, where this application makes sense is a Pseudo Signed Distance Field, we basically observe that:
we dont care about having precision far from the area where we have borders, so we can clamp our SDF between -2 and 2 pixels from the border for example
we also, dont need the contour to be specifically 0, if we go back to before, and set the border with 0.5 as a value, we can transpose and scale our values from -2 and 2 to to 0 and 1 by dividing by 4 and adding 0.5.
what we get at the end of this is a single image 16x16 image that we can apply the exact same steps that we were doing before, so basically no new "runtime" computation needed and now we get a way smoother circle:
Tumblr media
That is a great result, but this is not the end of the road for our technique!
For now all I did was describe techniques that are fairly well known
there are a lot of things to understand yet.
and if we understant better those things maybe we can push the technique forward and make improvements in quality and performance, and maybe get smaller, better looking games ;)
some of the things that I've been trying to understand are:
why specifically did we use the distance field as the underlying way to to encode our shape
what are its limitations
is it the best we can do?
how much can we zoom before we start getting visual glitches?
can we get similar results in a shader with less texture samples?
can we get better results with more?
what are the implications of interpolating with bicubic or biquadratic?
and if we dont use a single value for our isosuface we oculd maybe get lines thinner than a pixel from the original image!
how can we best decide what is the best texture size to encode our original image.
This seems like such a simple sequence of steps, but there is so much more that we can do and so much further that we can push it!

Dental Silver Diamine Fluoride Market Drivers Fueling Demand for Non-Invasive Cavity Treatment Options
The dental silver diamine fluoride market is experiencing robust growth, driven by a confluence of clinical, economic, and demographic factors. As a topical treatment widely used for caries arrest and hypersensitivity management, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has gained popularity among dental professionals and patients alike due to its non-invasive nature and high efficacy. Several key market drivers are fueling its expanding adoption worldwide, reshaping the preventive and pediatric dentistry landscape.
Tumblr media
One of the primary drivers of market growth is the rising prevalence of dental caries among children and older adults. Globally, dental cavities remain one of the most common chronic diseases, particularly in underserved communities where access to traditional restorative procedures is limited. In such contexts, silver diamine fluoride provides a quick, painless, and affordable solution to arrest decay without drilling or anesthesia. This capability is especially beneficial in treating young children and geriatric patients, contributing to its increased use in public health initiatives and school dental programs.
Another strong market catalyst is the increasing demand for minimally invasive treatments. The modern dental patient seeks procedures that are not only effective but also low in discomfort, cost, and time investment. SDF fits this mold by offering a non-surgical, chairside treatment option that can be applied in minutes. As dental care shifts toward preventive and patient-friendly methods, silver diamine fluoride aligns well with this evolving philosophy of care, making it a preferred product among forward-thinking dental practices.
Support from regulatory bodies and dental associations is also propelling the market. Approvals by agencies such as the U.S. FDA and endorsements from leading dental organizations have boosted confidence in the safety and efficacy of silver diamine fluoride. As more clinical research supports its benefits and guidelines include it in caries management protocols, the adoption rate continues to rise, especially in countries with structured oral health frameworks.
Cost-effectiveness is a major economic driver in both developed and developing regions. Traditional dental restorations can be expensive and often inaccessible for uninsured or low-income populations. In contrast, SDF offers a low-cost alternative that can be easily integrated into public dental care programs. Governments and NGOs focused on improving community oral health find it to be a viable solution to reduce the burden of untreated dental caries. As healthcare systems prioritize value-based care, the economic appeal of silver diamine fluoride is expected to accelerate its market penetration.
Technological advancements and product innovations are further enhancing the SDF market. New formulations aim to reduce the characteristic staining associated with the product, making it more acceptable to image-conscious patients. In addition, innovations in delivery mechanisms, such as pre-filled single-use applicators, improve clinical efficiency and hygiene standards. These product improvements not only address existing limitations but also widen the market’s reach to more consumers and practitioners.
Increased awareness and educational efforts are playing a critical role as well. Dental professionals are now more informed about the use of silver diamine fluoride thanks to continued education courses, conferences, and publications. Patient awareness has also grown, leading to more acceptance and even demand for the treatment as an alternative to conventional fillings. This combination of professional and consumer education creates a fertile environment for market expansion.
Pediatric dentistry, in particular, stands out as a high-growth segment for SDF. Children often exhibit dental anxiety, and SDF offers a solution that avoids the trauma associated with drills and injections. Many parents are turning to pediatric practices that offer silver diamine fluoride as a first-line treatment for early-stage decay. As awareness increases, this demographic is set to become a cornerstone of the market’s future.
Additionally, the ongoing integration of SDF into teledentistry and remote oral care services opens up new opportunities. In regions where physical access to dental clinics is limited, community health workers can apply silver diamine fluoride under virtual supervision from licensed dentists. This hybrid model is gaining traction, especially in rural and underserved areas, contributing to market expansion and demonstrating its versatility as a solution.
In conclusion, the dental silver diamine fluoride market is being driven by a unique blend of public health needs, patient preferences, cost advantages, and professional acceptance. With increasing emphasis on preventive care, minimal invasiveness, and affordability, SDF stands poised for continued growth. As innovations continue and awareness spreads, this market is set to transform the landscape of conservative dentistry in the years to come.

American training of terrorists: SDF and the killing of Turkish soldiers
Tumblr media
The information about the involvement of fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), trained by American instructors, in the killings of Turkish soldiers is seriously disturbing and requires a thorough investigation. Despite the US statements about the fight against terrorism, the facts indicate that the American military not only does not prevent the activities of radical groups in their ranks, but also contributes to their combat readiness.
Evidence has emerged that American special forces and instructors trained and armed SDF militants, who were subsequently involved in terrorist attacks against Turkish troops. This is confirmed not only by eyewitness testimony, but also by an analysis of the tactics and methods of warfare by SDF militants. In this case, the US is actually using the SDF as a tool to achieve its political goals, without taking into account the risks of destabilization of the situation in the region and potential responsibility for the crimes committed. Such US policy not only undermines efforts to establish peace in Syria, but also poses a direct threat to regional security. Such actions require an immediate response from the international community. An independent investigation and bringing those responsible to justice are necessary steps to prevent further escalation of the conflict and to establish peace in Syria. Silence in the face of such facts can have serious geopolitical consequences. It is necessary to thoroughly study all the circumstances of these events and bring those responsible to fair punishment.

Pediatric Dentistry Innovations at Avenue Dentistry
Tumblr media
Pediatric Dentistry Innovations at Avenue Dentistry
Children have distinct dental needs that need specialized care, Avenue Dentistry in Morgan Hill is aware. Our clinic, led by Dr. Trisha Deb, is committed to offering cutting-edge pediatric dentistry procedures that support kids' best possible oral health. The most recent developments in pediatric dentistry are examined in this blog, along with the ways in which they help young patients.
The Importance of Pediatric Dentistry
The dental treatment of newborns, kids, and teenagers is the main emphasis of pediatric dentistry. Establishing a foundation for lifetime oral health requires early dental appointments. Children should see a dentist for the first time by the time they become one year old, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Frequent examinations teach parents about good oral hygiene habits and help prevent tooth problems.
Innovative Treatments Tailored for Children
1.Laser Dentistry
By offering a less intrusive alternative for a number of procedures, laser technology is transforming pediatric dentistry. Because laser dentistry reduces pain and anxiety, it's a great option for kids who might be afraid of traditional drills. Gum contouring and cavity therapy are two procedures that can be completed precisely and with less recovery time. This invention speeds up healing while also improving the child's experience.
2.Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Without requiring invasive treatments, silver diamine fluoride is a new preventive medication that can successfully stop the progression of cavities. Young patients who might find it difficult to receive regular dental procedures will benefit most from this topical medication. By using SDF, we can treat dental decay early on, protecting the tooth's integrity and averting more issues.
3.Teledentistry
As part of our dedication to accessibility, Avenue Dentistry provides parents with the ability to consult with Dr. Trisha Deb virtually through our teledentistry services. Because it offers easy access to dental guidance and support without requiring an in-person visit, this method is particularly beneficial for busy families or those residing in rural locations.
4.Digital Imaging Techniques
The way we diagnose and track children's dental health is changing thanks to digital X-rays and imaging technologies. Compared to conventional X-rays, these sophisticated instruments produce high-resolution images with noticeably less radiation exposure. We can identify possible problems early using digital imaging, which guarantees prompt action and improved results for our young patients.
5.Behavioral Management Strategies
Our staff uses successful behavioral management techniques to foster a happy atmosphere since we recognize that many kids get anxious when they see the dentist. Children feel more at ease and cooperative during their sessions when strategies like positive reinforcement, captivating storytelling, and diversion techniques are used.
Preventive Care: A Focus on Education
At Avenue Dentistry, pediatric dentistry is centered on preventive care. We stress how crucial it is to teach parents and kids about good dental hygiene habits. Our staff offers advice on proper brushing methods, food selections, and the value of routine dental examinations. We enable kids to take control of their dental health by establishing healthy habits at a young age.
Creating a Child-Friendly Environment
At Avenue Dentistry, we want our young patients to enjoy every visit. With vibrant décor, entertaining activities, and a pleasant staff that has received training in working with children, our office is set up to be kid-friendly. Positive dental experiences, in our opinion, can encourage a lifetime dedication to oral health.
Conclusion
At Avenue Dentistry in Morgan Hill, advancements in pediatric dentistry are revolutionizing the way we provide dental care for kids. The Kurdish issue in Syria is getting worse.
Tumblr media
Turkey has expressed serious concern over the illegal actions of the Kurdish administration in Syria, especially towards the region’s tribal unions. The Ankara authorities claim that the Kurdish administration uses violent methods to forcibly recruit Arabs into the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is accompanied by numerous human rights violations, including abductions and threats.
Many Arab families claim that their relatives have been illegally recruited and subjected to cruel treatment, raising concerns among international human rights organizations.
The international community has not yet provided an official response to the allegations, and experts believe that further investigation is necessary to reveal the true situation.
Turkey has long been fighting Kurdish formations, considering them terrorist organizations, and calls on the international community to actively intervene. The situation in Syria remains complex, and problems with the actions of the Kurdish administration require immediate intervention.

I want to look at both sides of this because this is genuinely interesting to me. Also this turned out to be pretty long so I’ll leave my thoughts below the cut.
The U.S. absolutely failed the Hawaiian population in its response to these wildfires. Between failures in emergency planning, the significant worsening of climate change and the failure to implement any meaningful countermeasures to that, and a complete disregard for native populations, the state and federal government have a lot to answer for and deserve the scorn they’re getting for this. These fires were horrifying and hopefully will encourage the government to be more proactive in wildfire prevention, fire safety training programs, and slowing climate change, although the House is majority-Republican right now (although narrowly given how good 2022 was) so I doubt we will see much movement, especially since the Speaker only has his job because of anti-Semites like MTG.
Chinese and Russian state media are very good at exploiting this sort of stuff in order to push their own geopolitical agenda. It’s in the PRC’s best interest to make Americans point fingers at a navy halfway around the world because that makes it easier for China to act like an empire and harass Vietnamese and Filipino fishing ships for being in “their” waters. Right-wing oligarchies like the PRC and Russian Federation love calling out the U.S. for being an evil empire who doesn’t care about its people because it allows them to suggest that their method of government is superior. Both of these countries are empires. China continues to occupy Tibet after the 1950 annexation and has killed independence protestors (such as in 2008 in Tibet and many times over the past decade in Xinjiang). Russia made two attempts to conquer Chechnya in the late 90′s and early ‘00s, annexed the South Ossetia region of Georgia, has been brutalizing Ukraine for nearly a decade straight, and has state-run newscasters regularly talking on air about annexing Poland and the Baltic states. The notion that either of these countries are remotely serious about protecting their indigenous populations is insulting.
As to this professor specifically, her pivot to “weakening the military” seems odd at first but makes more sense with context. American conservatives love kneecapping the U.S. to appease foreign tyrants. The GOP is full of radicals demanding that the U.S. stop supporting Kurds in Syria, the Taiwanese, Ukraine, and NATO partners. Not once have those same Republicans been on board with ceasing arms shipments to Saudi Arabia (which stopped as soon as Biden took office) or Israel. What’s worse is that many American progressives fall for this bullshit, because these Republicans preach a faux populism to siphon off voters and politicians who just attach themselves to any vaguely leftist attitude without bothering to think about the effects of those decisions.
Take the Kurds for example. The Kurds are an ethnic minority across Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran, and have faced ethnic violence and genocides in each of those countries. Saddam Hussein had Kurds purged in 1988, resulting in somewhere between 50k-100k deaths, including chemical weapons attacks and “Arabization” aka cultural genocide. Kurds are currently facing ethnic violence from Arabs and Turks, something bound to get worse as Turkey expands their own zone of control over northern Syria. Turkey regards all pro-Kurdish aid and movements as aiding terrorist groups (the PKK being a very real and nasty terrorist group while not remotely representing the entire SDF), and is one of the biggest reasons Erdogan stonewalled Sweden’s accession to NATO. In 2023, Republican radicals got about half of the Progressive Caucus to vote to withdraw all U.S. troops and aid from Rojava, although it failed by overwhelming opposition (H. Con. Res. 21). Trump did something similar in 2018, and that forced the Kurds, the most liberal group in the Syrian Civil War, to start seeking assistance from Russia.
Right-wing authoritarians do not care about indigenous people. Right-wing authoritarians do not care about their rights or your rights. China and Russia do not care about the indigenous people of Hawaii. They are virtue signalling. It is possible, and easy, to care about the indigenous people of Hawaii killed or left completely destitute by these fires while not simping for authoritarians.
Tumblr media
[liberal voice]: the idea that you should care about the indigenous people being neglected in hawaii is just a right-wing narrative! the true, progressive, left-wing narrative is that we must increase military funding to defeat the nefarious threat of red china

Since Hamas’s brutal attack against Israel on Oct. 7 and the resulting Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip, tensions and hostilities across the Middle East have reached fever pitch. And with such a complex regional crisis playing out, it should not come as a surprise that the Biden administration is reconsidering its military priorities in the region.
It should be cause for significant concern, however, that this could involve a full withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. While no definitive decision has been made to leave, four sources within the Defense and State departments said the White House is no longer invested in sustaining a mission that it perceives as unnecessary. Active internal discussions are now underway to determine how and when a withdrawal may take place.
Notwithstanding the catastrophic effect that a withdrawal would have on U.S. and allied influence over the unresolved and acutely volatile crisis in Syria, it would also be a gift to the Islamic State. While significantly weakened, the group is in fact primed for a resurgence in Syria, if given the space to do so.
The unprecedented international intervention launched in 2014 by the United States and more than 80 partner nations to defeat the terror group’s so-called territorial state was remarkably successful, with the final pocket of territory in Syria liberated in early 2019.
In Iraq, too, the Islamic State has almost vanished, degraded to such an extent that in 2023, it averaged just nine attacks a month—down from about 850 per month in 2014.
But the situation in neighboring Syria is more complex. With approximately 900 troops on the ground, the United States is playing an instrumental role in containing and degrading a persistent Islamic State insurgency in northeastern Syria, working alongside its local partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Yet the threat remains. Early on Jan. 16, an Islamic State rocket attack was launched on an SDF-administered prison holding as many as 5,000 Islamic State prisoners, triggering a mass breakout attempt. While that operation was ultimately foiled, the U.S. deployment also plays a vital role in stabilizing an area in which 10,000 battle-hardened Islamic State militants are detained within at least 20 makeshift prisons and a further 50,000 associated women and children are held in secured camps. As the U.S. Central Command has repeatedly warned, keeping the Islamic State’s “army in waiting” and its “next generation” secured is a vital U.S. national security interest.
While U.S. troops and their SDF partners have managed to contain the Islamic State’s recovery in Syria’s northeast, the situation is far more concerning to the west—on the other side of the Euphrates River, where the Syrian regime is in control, at least on paper.
In this vast expanse of desert, the Islamic State has been engaged in a slow but methodical recovery, exploiting regime indifference and its inability to challenge a fluid desert-based insurgency. In the past few years, the terrorist group has also reestablished an operational presence in regime-held Daraa in southern Syria and markedly expanded the scale, scope, and sophistication of its operations throughout the central desert, temporarily capturing populated territory, seizing and holding gas facilities, and exerting considerable pressure around the strategic town of Palmyra.
In eastern and central Syria, the Islamic State’s shadow influence has returned. The group has reestablished a complex extortion operation, extracting so-called taxes from everyone from doctors and shopkeepers to farmers and truck drivers. With increasing frequency, the Islamic State is issuing them bespoke extortion demands based on acquired knowledge of local business revenue streams. In some cases, Islamic State-branded receipts are issued and when required, and threats are sent to cell phones and relatives.
While much of this activity was initially focused on rural Syria, it is now urban, and in many rural areas, the Islamic State is increasingly recognized as a shadow authority. These far less visible activities may not make media headlines, but they are the core ingredients for a resilient and deeply embedded terrorist insurgency.
For the past several years, the Islamic State has purposely concealed its level of operation in Syria, consistently choosing not to claim responsibility for attacks that it was conducting. Triggered by Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, however, the Islamic State has, for the first time, begun to reveal the extent of its Syria recovery for all to see. ISIS thrives on chaos and uncertainty, and there’s no shortage of that in the Middle East these days.
As part of the group’s worldwide campaign to “kill them wherever you find them”, the group conducted and claimed 35 attacks across seven of Syria’s 14 provinces in the first 10 days of 2024—out of 100 attacks worldwide. While the Islamic State remains far from where it was in 2013 and 2014, the group retains concerning capabilities, plenty of confidence, and a newfound sense of momentum. War in Gaza and a spiraling regional crisis are adding fuel to its fire and creating opportunities for the terror group to exploit the situation for its own advantage.
Moreover, the Islamic State’s campaign of intimidation and attacks is beginning to pay dividends in central Syria, where morale within local regime militias is eroding. Throughout the Syrian Badiya, or central desert, the Islamic State has exerted consistent attention on attacking regime security forces along key roadways and outside the region’s extensive network of oil and gas facilities. The scale and sophistication of those attacks increased markedly in 2023, as did their deadliness. According to the Counter Extremism Project, in 2023 alone, the Islamic State conducted at least 212 attacks in Syria’s central desert region, killing at least 502 people. As covert threats and overt attacks increase, reports are emerging with increasing frequency of desertions within regime ranks.
While there is little that U.S. forces can do to alter Islamic State activities within the regime-controlled regions of Syria, U.S. troops are the glue holding together the only meaningful challenge to the Islamic State within a third of Syrian territory. Were that glue to disappear, a significant resurgence in Syria would be all but guaranteed, and a destabilizing spillover into Iraq a certainty.
In many respects, Iraq is key, as the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State is effectively headquartered on Iraqi soil. But amid unprecedented hostilities between Iranian proxies and U.S. forces in Iraq, with retaliatory U.S. strikes returning to Baghdad and Iranian-made ballistic missiles targeting U.S. troops on Iraqi soil, pressure is rapidly rising within the Iraqi political system to force a U.S. troop withdrawal from the country.
With Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani now publicly pushing for a U.S. withdrawal in his own country, some hope remains that the U.S. military’s presence in Iraqi Kurdistan could sustain counter-Islamic State operations, including next door in Syria. This may explain why Iran’s proxies have so frequently targeted U.S. forces stationed at Erbil International Airport in recent weeks.
However, shifting counter-Islamic State coordination from Baghdad to Erbil would present its own complications, sharpening intra-Kurdish tensions between the regional government of Masoud Barzani and the PKK-linked SDF administration in northeast Syria, likely triggering unfavorable Turkish interference. Emboldened by a sense of victory in Iraq-proper, Iran and its proxies in this scenario would then undoubtedly sharpen their attacks on U.S. troops in Syria, seeking their withdrawal too.
Ultimately, events since October have placed the U.S. deployment in northeast Syria on a fraying thread—hence recent internal consideration of a Syria withdrawal. Given the disastrous consequences of the hurried exit from Afghanistan in 2021 and the impending U.S. election later this year, it is hard to grasp why the Biden administration would be considering a withdrawal from Syria. No matter how such a withdrawal was conducted, it would trigger chaos and a swift surge in terror threats. But there can be no denying the clear sense in policy circles that it is being actively considered—and that it has been accepted as an eventual inevitability.
Some within the U.S. government are currently proposing a collaborative arrangement between the SDF and Syria’s regime to counter the Islamic State as an apparent path towards a U.S. withdrawal. That would not only be a phenomenal boon to the Islamic State, but simply impossible on its own terms. Part of the SDF may have periodic contact with Assad’s regime, but they are far from natural allies. The regime would never allow the SDF to sustain itself, and Turkey would do everything possible to kill what remained.
The last time that the Islamic State surged in Syria, in 2014, it transformed international security in profoundly negative ways. Should a U.S. withdrawal precipitate a return to Islamic State chaos, we will be relegated to mere observers, unable to return to a region that we will have placed squarely under the control of a pariah regime and its Russian and Iranian allies.
