Now, the REAL reason I'm making this post is much more exciting. I was able to track down some obscure wallpapers that were released in Japan alongside the novel! One was available from Kadokawa, and the other from Amazon JP! I was unfortunately only able to find the "Sample" versions of them, but they are full resolution, and the Amazon version allows us to easily isolate the artwork of both Magolor and the Lor Starcutter featured on the novel cover artwork!

I believe this is the first time that this artwork of Magolor has been isolated online, and it has only been done to a much lower level of quality for the Lor! Please enjoy them both, and use them however you like!

Why Sano left Siri ?

Initially, Sano doubted that Siri could be more than just a unique subject for medical research. He was not sure that she could effectively interact within the workflow and make a meaningful contribution to his research. Sano considered her abilities and potential to be unpredictable, and believed that she could be nothing more than a burden due to possible limitations or unpredictable behavior.

Sano left Siri alive not out of pity, but rather out of scientific curiosity. He was interested in studying the anatomy of a representative of the angelic race, which rarely happened in his practice. Usually, only people were caught in the infirmary, and the opportunity to study something new and unusual awakened Sano's research passion. He understood that this was a unique opportunity to learn more about the structure of the body, which differs from the human, and, perhaps, expand his knowledge in the field of medicine.

However, after Siri was taken to the infirmary, Sano began to notice her unique qualities. He saw that she had certain skills and could perform routine tasks that could free up Sano's time for more complex research. This made him reconsider his attitude towards her and acknowledge that Siri could be a valuable assistant.

Au milieu des années 1960, créer un groupe dans l’espoir secret de le voir devenir légendaire est le vœu pieux de beaucoup d’adolescents.

Dans leur Midwest natal, Ronald et Robert Bell entretiennent ce rêve. La position sociale du père – champion de box émérite - leur permet d’y croire un peu plus que beaucoup d’autres enfants.

Après une délocalisation sur la côte Est, la famille loge quelques temps dans un immeuble où elle croise la route de l’immense Theolonius Monk, qui devient un ami. Sur place, le paternel s’entraîne toujours de manière intensive. Dans sa salle de boxe, il rencontre un certain Miles Davis, impliqué dans une carrière parallèle de boxeur amateur, et qui lui propose d’être son sparring partner. On raconte que Mister Bell refuse l’offre, de peur d’abîmer les lèvres si précieuses du trompettiste.

Le jazz occupe une place prépondérante dans le quotidien de la famille Bell. Être baigné dans l’improvisation des batteries et des cuivres donne envie aux deux frères de s’essayer à ce genre musical, et ils se mettent alors, de façon absolument autodidacte, à apprendre à jouer. Le choix de Ronald se portera sur les synthétiseurs, Robert optera pour la basse. Leur première source d’inspiration est alors l’œuvre de John Coltrane, et sa manière de briser toutes les barrières pour proposer la musique la plus libre et la plus corrosive du milieu des années 1960. 

En 1964, ils forment un groupe avec Robert Mickens, Dennis Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown et Charles Smith, les Jazziacs, avec qui ils jouent chaque soir dans un club de jazz du New Jersey. Le groupe changera successivement de nom, passant de The Monikers à Soul Town Review, pour devenir The New Dimensions et, finalement, Kool and the Flames.

 Dans leur club de residence, il leur arrive de croiser la route de légendes du jazz telles que Pharoah Sanders ou McCoy Tyner pour qui ils ouvriront les concerts. Pendant plusieurs mois, ils joueront six jours sur sept, avec des sessions longues de six à huit heures. Et le soutien de leurs parents est absolu, excités comme leurs enfants par cette aventure et son succès locale. 

Contrairement à d'autres groupes comme Earth, Wind & Fire, le succès n’est pas immédiat. Il faudra plusieurs années et un travail conséquent pour trouver la formule qui leur assurera un succès durable.

Le fait que le groupe soit aujourd’hui l'un des plus samplés de l’histoire déforme la réalité historique. Leur véritable succès commercial ne viendra qu'en 1973 avec l’album Wild & Peaceful, premier disque d’or du groupe porté par les succès de Funky Stuff, Hollywood Swinging et surtout de Jungle Boogie, samplé un nombre incalculable de fois.

L’année suivante, le groupe proposera son meilleur album : Light Of Worlds, un retour aux racines jazz-funk du groupe. Les frères Bell ressentaient l’envie de retrouver une musique où les instrumentaux ont une place prépondérante et l'immense succès de Summer Madness viendra les conforter dans leur décision.

Pour beaucoup, la découverte de Summer Madness se fait à travers une scène mythique du film Rocky en 1976. Bill Conti, compositeur de la bande originale du film, visiblement marqué par le titre, en proposera sa propre version dans l'une de ses compositions.

Plus tard, Will Smith et DJ Jazzy Jeff seront parmi les premiers rappeurs à utiliser ce sample, ravivant l’intérêt pour Kool & The Gang à la fin des années 1980.

Pour une autre génération, il suffisait de lancer GTA Vice City, de choisir la station de radio Funk/Soul « Fever 105 » et de se laisser entraîner par le solo légendaire de Robert Bell. Ce jeu vidéo mythique a permis de faire découvrir un nombre incalculable de morceaux à des auditeurs issus d’une autre génération, qui développaient le même attrait pour ce son si particulier et organique des années 1970.

Le fait que ce morceau soit une face B, lancée par hasard par un DJ lors d’une soirée, rend l’histoire de cette chanson encore plus singulière. Summer Madness deviendra le morceau phare du groupe, traversant les époques et s’adaptant aux nouvelles manières d’appréhender la musique.

Le groupe continuera sa carrière triomphante jusqu’à la fin des années 1970, avec l’arrivée d’un courant musical plus axé sur les parties chantées et des mélodies simplifiées pour toucher un public plus large : Le disco, qui avait fait son entrée sur les dancefloors quelques années auparavant, deviendra la nouvelle norme. Les groupes issus du funk n’auront d’autre choix que de s’adapter à ce courant.

Une anecdote marquante illustre d'ailleurs cette nécessité d’adaptation au disco.

Lors d’une séance de dédicaces organisée dans un immense centre commercial américain, le groupe est interpellé par une jeune fille qui se moque ouvertement d’eux en les traitant de ringards. Très agacé par cette remarque, Robert Bell dira qu’il est temps de changer leur formule, devenue obsolète après trop d’années. Il suggère qu’il faut désormais adopter une approche plus commerciale. Cela se traduira par le recrutement immédiat de JT Taylor en tant que chanteur principal. Son arrivée permettra une adaptation rapide au disco, et les radios adhéreront dès le lancement de Ladies Night en 1979.

Ce changement simplifiera fortement la formule du groupe, qui troquera ses longues plages instrumentales et ses chants en chœur pour des couplets entièrement interprétés par JT Taylor. Ils feront appel à Eumir Deodato, le génial arrangeur du label CTI Records, qui s’est reconverti en arrangeur disco/funk dans les années 1970. L’objectif de cette collaboration sera de rendre leur musique plus accessible, en simplifiant les arrangements pour mieux toucher un public qui ne veut plus de complexité musicale. Deodato mettra également en avant la voix de JT Taylor et atténuera les parties instrumentales. Cette formule magique portera ses fruits, et les tubes planétaires s’enchaîneront : Ladies Night en 1979, Celebration en 1980, et Get Down On It en 1981.

Chaque album proposera systématiquement un single au succès mondial, et le groupe deviendra incontournable, vendant au total plus de 70 millions d'exemplaires tout au long de sa carrière.

Cependant, les fans de la première heure se détourneront de ce chemin, perçu comme guidé exclusivement par le succès commercial. Les membres de Kool & The Gang résumeront ce tournant dans leur carrière comme une forme de survie à une époque où les auditeurs se lassent rapidement, et où la concurrence est féroce, rendant toute innovation difficile. La route du groupe s'arrêtera définitivement lorsque JT Taylor décidera de se lancer dans une carrière solo.

Kool & The Gang restera l’un des groupes les plus importants des années 1970. Compilation of Dutch Jambandran Language Translations in Kirby Star Allies

It's finally finished! This was entirely inspired by me using Jambandran words for Galacta Knight's dialogue, then desperately wanting to know what they were in Dutch, not being able to find it, seeing Star Allies on sale and then just doing it myself. I'm not sure if anyone besides me will need this, but it's here if you want! I would be so excited if there were more people writing Dutch Kirby fan fiction.

It looks like a lot of the Jambandran words are the same or very similar in Dutch and English. But there are a couple noteworthy differences. Below are the Japanese, English and Dutch versions, in that order. Where only one version is listed the word is the same across all three languages. Official translations are given in English, then Dutch.

Where I have bolded a word in the translation, that's the official translation and the following words an alternate way the term is used in-game, or a meaning derived from the real word it was clearly borrowed from.

For example: 'Ji' is used both as 'me' and 'my'. The direct translation the game gives is 'me', but in the example sentence it is used as 'my'. Jamblasted is clearly derived from 'blast it', but is translated in-game as 'anger'.

Basically just 'hoi', which is predictably like 'hi' in English.

Basically just 'De mazzel!' -> 'See you! / Peace out! / Smell ya later!' But 'Tot ziens' is more like 'Until (we) see (each other again)'. Or 'See you' for short, of course.

'Jofel' is a slightly stuffy way of saying 'nice / fun / friendly', usually said about a person. Instead of translating the 'cute' as 'schattig' they went with 'leuk' which is 'fun / enjoyable / (I) like (this)'. They probably changed it because 'Jawaii' would've looked too much like 'Jawai'.

Probably just a spelling adjustment for pronunciation. But with some fantasy it could be 'Ai!', as in 'Oops! / Yikes!' said when you just realised you forgot to do something important.

Alweer is 'again', but also 'already'. That's interesting to me since the Japanese version of the sample sentence where Hyness forgot Zan Partizanne's name contains 'jagu', which means 'soon', while the English version doesn't. It's as if Hyness isn't just apologising for forgetting again, but having forgotten so soon.

I suspect the 'pico' part is from 'pico bello', as in something that's done perfectly, or has excellent quality.

The English version is the official in-game translation. For the Japanese version I added a (very literal) possible English translation myself and for the Dutch version I translated the official version back into English for comparison.

Once again, the order is Japanese, English, then Dutch.

Sentence 1:

"Zan Paruru, jifu maju jyi haruda konju… Janno." -> "Zan Paruru, if again my heart goes crazy... Never mind."

The Lor Starcutter and Galaxia were people once upon a time. They actually knew each other, and were very close— best friends, if not lovers.

Lor was a tech Ancient— a Halcandran, and Galaxia a magic Ancient— an Astral.

The former would build all sorts of complicated and strange things. She also conducted odd and sometimes frightening experiments, such as rewriting her DNA using samples of the creature the humans used to travel to this universe in hopes of harnessing its power.

Galaxia, in contrast, was a fighter. She was an extremely serious person, seeing her duty of protecting Halcandra as of utmost importance. She’d train day in and day out. However, even despite these efforts, she was never quite as strong as her “twin,” the revered and well known Galacta Knight.*

(*Technically, Astrals cannot have siblings by virtue of not being born in the traditional sense. But seeing as how they fell to Halcandra at around the same time, they were raised as and cared for each other as brother and sister.)

Because of this being overshadowed, sometimes Galaxia and her brother would fight. She’d especially chastise him for his impulsivity and ruthlessness. Their relationship was… strained as adults despite being very close in childhood, to say the least.

But Lor was always there to help Galaxia feel better. She was quirky, sure, but she always lended an interesting perspective and carefree energy. In particular, she was very good at making Galaxia laugh.

When Galacta Knight was sealed, though, everything fell apart. Even despite their strained relationship, Galaxia was desperate to save her brother. She began to concoct a plan to try and rescue him.

…But when the other Ancients came to Lor, offering her power and unlimited, ultra-rare resources for her experiments, she sold Galaxia out. Galaxia was caught and punished for her crimes against Halcandra.

At the time, the Ancients were experimenting with sealing living beings in objects to imbue them with magical power. Their ultimate goal was to use this to seal away a powerful Dark Matter that was ravaging the galaxy. But the process was still in its early stages and they needed more research. As such, they decided to use Galaxia as a guinea pig, forever trapping her in the weapon she once wielded.

When she saw what fate Galaxia met, Lor was horrified, coming to regret her actions. She began to, in secret, try to find a way to reverse what had happened, that way she could apologize to her friend. But after many years of research and still no progress, she began to study something else:

Immortality and attaining it.

It was clear that there was no way to help Galaxia in the present, but surely in the future there would be some way to save, or at least reunite with her. All Lor needed to do was live to see that day.

That’s where the Starcutter came from— her finest invention. At the end of her life, she programmed herself into the vessel, hoping that through it she could exist for all of time.

…Eventually, Halcandra fell. Galaxia was taken with those that fled and the Lor Starcutter was wrecked. Galaxia passed between many hands over the years while the Lor laid in domancy.

Two troubled young men ended up finding them. Galaxia was discovered by an Astral who had recently broken away from an evil master and was hoping to find a purpose in becoming a hero. The Lor was unearthed and repaired by a part-Halcandran with big ambitions.

These men, of course, were Meta Knight and Magolor… and despite themselves, both Ancients were nigh-immediately endeared by their new owners. Meta Knight reminded Galaxia of her long-gone brother and Magolor reminded Lor of her younger self. Galaxia agreed to teach Meta Knight how to be a hero while the Lor began to serve Magolor. Galaxia became softer, unlearning some of the distrust she’d inherited, and the Lor began to goof around again, egged on by Magolor’s personality.

As a sentient vessel, one would think the Lor would be angry at Magolor for what he did (Crashing her twice and using her as a weapon against her will.), but ultimately, she was not. How could she, as a person who made an equally grave mistake in her youth judge him? In his betrayal, all he did was further cement her belief that they were one in the same.

Considering Magolor and Meta Knight have met, it can be inferred Galaxia and the Lor reunited as well. But as for how that encounter went…? Perhaps that’s a story for another day. This post is long enough as is.
