NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has unveiled groundbreaking insights into Centaur 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, one of the most active objects in our outer solar system! 🌠🔍
🔭 Utilizing its advanced spectrographic capabilities, scientists have observed multiple jets of gas streaming from this fascinating celestial body. For the first time, they identified two jets of carbon dioxide (CO₂) bursting forth to the north and south, alongside a carbon monoxide (CO) jet heading northward! This incredible data expands our understanding of these hybrid objects that bridge the worlds of comets and trans-Neptunian bodies.
Join us in marveling at the universe's wonders! 🌌💫 Check out the full story and images captured by Webb here: https://www.jameswebbdiscovery.com/discoveries/james-webb-telescope-reveals-new-insights-into-centaur-29ps-gas-eruptions

World of Material Characterization
Hey there, Tumblr fam! 👋 Welcome to the first of our series of posts on Material Characterization, a fascinating field that peels back the layers of materials to reveal their inner secrets. Whether you're a science enthusiast, a student, or just curious about the world around you, this series is sure to pique your interest.
Blog Post 1: The Basics of Material Characterization
In today's post, we're diving into the basics. What is Material Characterization, you ask? Well, it's all about examining and understanding the properties of materials on a micro and nano scale. From metals to polymers, ceramics to composites, this field is a key player in industries like aerospace, medicine, and electronics.
Imagine you're a detective, and materials are your mysteries. Material characterization techniques help us figure out what makes materials tick, and this knowledge leads to innovation and improvement.
Here are a few common techniques:
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM): This nifty tool uses electron beams to examine the surface of materials in high detail. It's like using a super-powered magnifying glass!
X-ray Diffraction (XRD): Ever heard of X-rays in medicine? Well, XRD uses X-rays to determine the arrangement of atoms in a crystal. It's like solving a molecular puzzle.
Spectroscopy: This technique involves studying the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation. It helps us identify materials by analyzing the light they emit or absorb.
Mechanical Testing: Want to know how strong a material is? Mechanical testing helps us measure properties like hardness, tensile strength, and elasticity.
These are just a few of the tools in a material scientist's arsenal. As we journey through this series, we'll explore each of them in more detail.
Now, you might be wondering, "Why should I care about Material Characterization?" Well, it impacts your life more than you think. From improving the durability of your smartphone screen to making airplanes safer, it's everywhere.
So, buckle up, folks! Our Material Characterization journey has just begun. Stay tuned for more exciting posts where we'll delve deeper into these techniques and their real-world applications.
If you're hungry for more knowledge on Material Characterization, head over to our website for in-depth articles and resources. Until next time, stay curious! 🧐✨

A story of a meeting about Evolution and the Second Law of Thermodynamics
In May, 1985, a group of scientists and scholars from many fields ranging from biochemistry and cosmology to philosophy and ecology gathered at California State University, Fullerton to participate in conference on evolution and the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
The participants primary goal was to search for a way out of the current difficulty with evolution and recent developments in thermodynamics and information theory.
Although many intriguing concepts were introduced at the conference no real progress was made toward helping evolution get around the Second Law. The only agreement for future research was that Darwinianism was bankrupt-it had failed on every front.
The fossil record shows that species do not evolve in the continuous incremental fashion predicted by the neo-Darwinists.
Molecular biology has shown that genes are utterly differently sorts of entities than proposed by neo-Darwinists.
Population geneticists.. have shown that genes frequencies surge back and forth from year to year with no enduring genetic evolutionary consequences.
The inability of the California State University-Fullerton Conference participants to solve how evolution could work under the Second Law of Thermodynamics is understandable considering the complete failure of laboratory experiments to synthesize (create) even a protein or DNA under factorable conditions for evolutionary development.

Deep-sea geology rocks!
Mud collected from the deep seafloor is helping scientists from MBARI and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) understand the geologic history of the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coast of Oregon. Sediment cores collected by ROV Doc Ricketts reveal layers formed over thousands of years. Here, the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate is thrust beneath North America, leading to a buildup of friction. The massive release of energy when friction gives way results in megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis. The team is also getting a closer look at the biology of this dynamic region. These cores help our scientists look back in time to see when these geologic events have happened in the past and the natural processes that shape the continental margin to help Pacific Coast communities plan for the future.

These rocks have all experienced hydrothermal alteration and contact metamorphism. The 1.4 billion year old Velkerri Formation from Australia is an organic rich mudstone. Some time after burial and lithification, the rock was intruded by hydrothermal fluids that caused metallic sulphide, and ferrous carbonate + quartz mineralisation. I think some maybe related to the intrusion of dolerite around 1.2 billon years ago, and some related to basin inversion around 800 million years ago. The mineralisation and contact metamorphism is widespread but in some areas is subtle and only visible on the microscopic scale. The velkerri formation is the basis for much of what we know about marine chemistry during the early evolution of eukaryotic life. Several important geochemical studies sampled the velkerri formation and used the pyrite in particular to show that the oceans 1.4 billion years ago were low in oxygen and rich in sulphur. This environmental state is thought to have been a major barrier to the development of more complex eukarotes. However, the hydrothermal and contact metamorphic alteration, in particular the micro scale alteration were unknown when these studies were conducted. As these previous studies used bulk sampling methods, it's likely that they unknowingly sampled the later sulphides which will have influenced the results and the interpretations of the previous researchers. This does not mean the previous work is bad and should be disregarded. Simply that the results should be reinterpreted inlight of this new information. That is how science is supposed to work. It is self revising and correcting. That is how science advances and improves. However, getting paper reviewers to understand and accept this is another thing entirely. I'm currently revising this work after a rejection. So let's see if the next version is enough to get the paper out. 😉 #geologyjohnson #geology #geologyrocks #pyrite #blackshale #shale #ore #hydrothermal #igneous #dolerite #metamorphism #science #sciencerocks #earthscience #naturalhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CdaMy8-sFoZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
