For my own dignity ignore what half of this says OK? Ok. I really love Susan. I feel like I've been neglecting her lately... She's legitimately a really interesting character. I think a lot about the way that Martin talks about her and the sort of characterization he applies to her. She's a person who definitely has a bit of a stoic, no-nonsense exterior, and it'd be hard to say that she's exceptionally nice, but beyond that she's a person who is extraordinarily caring and kind. She's respectful and she looks out for her people and there seems to be an extent to which she can't stand to see someone suffer if she knows there's something she, personally, could do about it. Martin's old (likely non-canon) idea that she and Felix would become closer friends post-crash, because she recognizes him as a person who has lost all meaningful connections in his life, and doesn't think he deserves that kind of isolation even if she doesn't particularly like him as a person, is something I think about a lot. Also the recent Q&A tidbit about her relationship with Linda feat. Martin calling her a "Really, really good person."

And all of that means a lot to me, because it exists in the face of, like. Her death. She died. She was fundamentally betrayed by a person she paid nothing but respect and begrudging kindness towards. And that Felix idea really sticks with me, because it's that fundamental concept where she had the chance to get the hell out of dodge, but she didn't, for the sake of a man she didn't even like, because she could recognize that if she didn't extend him that kindness, no one else was going to. And she paid the ultimate price for it. She's so good and so fascinating to me, and I really want to see more of her and get a better idea of what exactly her role as a character in the series is going to be.

Addendum: "project my own issues" is specifically in reference to me really liking to think she has autism. Fun headcanon of mine

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

Okay I do actually very much want to know what's in the Tea of Forgetting, though. "Ugh. Probably Lipton." No, shut up, what is that?? WHAT IS IT??

Like, the Tea of Seeing is made out of dried monster meat, and has been a thing for almost as long as the Ladybirds themselves. This is a known phenomenon, everybody has learned from 150+ years of experience that drinking powdered grub bits will let you See them from now on. The Tea of Forgetting, meanwhile, has apparently only existed for like 25 years? Like, the only reason it came about was because of one tainted grub water fiasco, after which HQ was like "Yeah, okay, we need to have some kind of contingency for this" and put research & development onto finding some way of unfucking the... then-presumed permanent?... changes grub organs make to the human body. And it WORKED.

This is never touched on again because Prue's not allowed to seriously ask these questions, and her mom has approximately negative interest in the duty-shirking that the tea represents to her, so she's never bothered finding out.

Okay, y’all. I’m bringing this question to tumblr.

I’ve literally asked friends (repeatedly) which one I should work on, and they are so kind and usually they tell me to work on whichever one I want to work on (bc they know I need to work on both). BUT. My ADHD brain needs a focus area. I WANT to work on both (I also have one friend telling me cov and another one telling me scout’s, so… HALP lol)

Ok, fellow Emmrichmancers, I need to defend my girl Harding here for a bit, cause she's been getting some disdain and eye-rolling for being the supposed 'discourse-mouthpiece' (ie. being the only one calling out the age gap thing).

Listen, ... when she first brings it up, that's what it SOUNDS like she's doing. Harding has a tendency to struggle with wording things well, she's life-smart, not book-smart - so that first banter does read as though she's worried FOR Rook in that patronizing way like a parent or older sibling, who thinks they know better... (heck even Emmrich potentially falls into that trap during the argument)

but then there's follow-up banter and it becomes clear that, no, she's not worried Emmrich might be taking advantage of poor innocent younger Rook; it becomes increasingly clear she's worried about HIS feelings. She's always addressing her concerns to HIM, and worrying about how they're "going too fast" (even IF he's made the promise to Rook to move slowly during their first dinner-date).

Harding's making observations about how he's becoming noticeably "mopey", she can TELL something's worrying HIM. (mind you, not even Rook seemed to have picked up on this)

And in turn he's very honest with Harding about how, despite defending himself against Davrin's juvenile jabs and appreciating/enduring Taash's sentiments and all that jazz, the age gap thing DOES secretly bother him. (the fact that he doesn't start moping straight away suggests that Harding was right, they DID go a bit too fast and Emmrich especially, was blinded by the honeymoon-phase so to speak). He does end up genuinely thanking her for her concern and advice, to try and think ahead about the relationship.

(Although sadly it still takes their potential impending deaths for him to reach their crisis-stage of needing to address his worries and I could do a whole essay alone on how he chooses to handle it, but others already have, so not now)

Say what you will about her, out of all their mutual friends, Harding was the ONLY ONE to see the pre-battle argument coming from A MILE AWAY, and she was trying to gently warn them; to try and nudge her two friends to have a serious talk about the consequences ahead, rather than blithely avoiding it.

tl;dr: Harding's got that serious emotional intelligence, and y'all best RESPECT her relationship advice.

3.) Vacuum_Exposure.sim - NI vector, variable duration, nociceptive/aversive. A force-executed simulacrum created from experiential capture. Namely, the experience of being Styx, in vacuum. This one sucks.

4.) Manual_Breathing.omf - visual/graphemic/auditory vector, variable duration, annoying. Ugh.

5.) Breathing_Manual.omf - visual vector, vaccine. Neuroplastic antigen designed to prevent effects of previously-listed memetic. Also provides broad-spectrum protection from attacks which interfere with respiration.

6.) Eyesore.omf - visual vector, variable duration/intensity, nociceptive/aversive, permanent damage potential. Induces sensation of itching, localized inside the retinas. Has tactical utility.

7.) Heartbreaker.omf - auditory vector, fixed playback duration, subjectivity interference. Audio induces emotions of intense heartache. Active memetic embedded within what internal documentation describes as an "upbeat, happy-go-lucky pop song."

8.) Peter_Pipers_Paracausal_Peppers.txt - graphemic vector, preset termination condition, extreme self-propagation risk, potential permanent damage. A tongue-twister poem, encoded with exotic graphemes, which compels spoken repetition until uttered correctly.

11.) Lallation.omf - auditory vector, variable duration, sensorium interference. Your tongue can't fit comfortably in your mouth. Makes speaking really, really hard.

12.) casket_desync.omf - anti-NHP, visual/NI vector, fixed duration, variable intensity, ontologistic disruption. No effect on exposed humans or other organic subjectivities. Induces a state of desynchronization between casket and blinkspace corpus, with...interesting results. Modern casket firmware is capable of identifying and excising this memetic agent within sixty seconds of exposure, or more quickly for milspec casket architecture. Potential tactical utility.

13.) forlorn.omf - olfactory vector, non-set duration, subjectivity interference. This one is odd, and requires a printer to synthesize. It's a chemical compound which, when aerosolized and smelled, induces feelings of intense longing, nostalgia, and homesickness. Effects can last from a few minutes following exposure, up to an hour.

14.) zax.omf - visual/auditory vector, variable duration, subjectivity interference. Whatever direction you happen to be facing when you're exposed, that's the only direction you can move for the duration. Tends to result in repeat exposure.

15.) styxclean.omf - visual vector, variable duration, subjectivity interference. You need to lick your own eyeball, and you won't stop trying. Good luck.

16.) hyperformal.omf - visual vector, fixed duration, neurolinguistic alteration. This one is simple. For one hour, you cannot use any contractions. This is applicable to both spoken and written language.

17.) burn.sim - Non-anthropocentric qualic vector, non-set duration, non-harmful ontologistic alteration. Ontologic bridge required—NHP USE ONLY, LETHAL HAZARD TO HUMAN PERSONNEL. An attempt at inducing an altered cognitive state in NHPs matching the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol consumption in humans. Effects are…temperamental.

18.) calm_down.omf - auditory vector, fixed playback duration, non-harmful subjectivity alteration. I, uh…so, this one feels like being comfy. Wrapped up in blankets, warm, drowsy. Active memetics are embedded within an audio track of a cat purring. It’s just designed to take your mind off things for a bit. Might help a human sleep. Avi's commitment to refusing to learn/use the names of the Criminal Element is so funny to me. Like, she knows Sasha's name purely because as sister-scouts, she has to- everyone else is referred to almost exclusively by their relationship to her, and it's the most Little Cousin thing ever.
