So would the prices of everything sold. The landlord would keep a significant percentage of each store’s profits and innovation would suffer as well. Google’s monopoly is real. They pay Apple more than a million dollars an hour to be the default search engine on phones. It’s more profitable for Apple to threaten to build a search engine than it is for them to actually run one. Google overpays for the default status because their hegemony gives advertisers fewer options. And by controlling the flow of attention across the web, they can dictate how websites work and what our experience is online. Ever since Adam Smith began writing about capitalism, it’s been understood that monopolies are a defect in the structure of free markets. Locking in an advantage gives the monopolist the power to ignore its customers and we all suffer as a result. A company grows by getting ever better at serving its customers, its vendors and its employees. A company becomes a monopoly by becoming ever better at becoming a monopoly. Few companies have done a better job of marketing the benefits of their monopoly than Google. They rarely charge their users, but offer free software and engaging stories instead. But they have relentlessly grabbed more and more of our attention, and used it to create a sinecure that costs all of us. It’s not just ecosia, duckduckgo and kagi that are paying for this monopoly. When a company can shift the rules and focus on more instead of better, we all pay.

i've said it before but it will forever and always make me insane that jacob's ending is to join the cullens for the sake of bella not having to give anything up. they find out jake will be immortal & tied to renesmee forever, so bella gets to smile & say "my family is finally complete! ^-^" but jake already HAS a family. he has a father and 2 sisters. quil, embry, seth and sam are like his brothers. jacob and leah were planning to run away together. he's always been welcome in emily's home, sue has been a family friend since before his birth. bella abandons her mortality by choice because she feels no connection to the people around her, but jacob has really strong bonds. it's clear that every character we meet in la push is like family to him, he's an active member of the community. jake would've graduated high school and been a mechanic, would've grown into a young man. a good friend, a fun uncle, a present son. he's set up to have such a rich life. and he's just magically compelled to give that up. beyond his control, he loses sight of everything, because his high school crush's baby is now the singular most important thing to him. he's perpetually 18 with his perpetually 18 year old girlfriend, running around vancouver or alaska or wherever with the girl who friendzoned him at 16 & her in-laws (who were antagonistic to him for months). and i'm just supposed to say omg yay now he doesn't have to let go of bella! everyone is happy! it's complete madness

Colleges used to be measured by how many books they had in the library. Access to courses was restricted. If knowledge was power, controlling access was essential. They even call it the ‘admissions office.’ Part of the status that comes from higher education is that they controlled who could find the information and who was left behind. Today, of course, all of the information is there, a click away. Billions of people have a smartphone with access to everything ever recorded and written, but also to a trillion dollar AI system that can offer informed guidance. So why hesitate? Why do we get stuck or avoid even acknowledging that it’s possible? Because learning is hard. It creates tension. It takes time. Most of all, it requires a commitment to becoming someone else, a bet we’re making that might not turn out the way we hope. The system has called our bluff. If you want to learn, learn. But we pay for it with effort.

Seth gets in a mood after a loss. You can’t blame him - the longer the year goes on, the more and more each win or loss has an effect on whether or not the team goes to playoffs. He’s always too hard on himself and agonizes over the mistakes he made, when you know that often it is out of his control. He’s an athlete, not a superhuman and you have to remind him of that a few times a week. 

He comes home like a kicked puppy, and you know the result of the game instantly whether or not you were watching. He’s either excited and full of energy, or drained and his bags and gear get dropped by the door. 

There’s one thing you accidentally stumbled on months ago when you tried to console him after a bad loss. It’s something that tumbled out of his mouth before he could stop it and from there, it became a normal part of your routine. You found that taking care of him in that way is one of the only things that brings him out of his funk, and frankly, it’s fucking hot. 

He’s on top of you, your sweaty bodies pressing together as he thrusts slowly and deeply into you. It’s sweet and you let him use you to calm himself, your hands running gently through his hair, finger-combing and twisting through the locks. “You’re sorry?” you smile at him like you can’t believe he’s apologizing while he’s still deep inside of you. 

“Yea… that was probably really fucking weird. I don’t know why I said it… I didn’t even realize-”

You cut him off with another kiss, this time deeper and longer. He whines into your lips, his hips hitting a few more shallow thrusts like he can’t help himself. 

“It’s not weird, baby,” you say as you pull away from him. His lips are wet and such a pretty pink that you have a hard time focusing on the conversation at hand. “Do you have a mommy kink?” You caress the skin on his face.

“Ugh, I was kind of hoping it would never come up,” he groans and tries to drop his face, but you catch it.
