He always appears around this time of year. Always at night, always slowly descending, eyes leaving burning streaks. Never reaches the ground. At least, nobody's ever seen him touch down, or admit to it.

At first people thought it was the Second Coming, then they thought it was a devil trying to claim the world. That's what Father Franklin said.

A whole bunch of people used to come and try to make sense of him. He never responded to hails. Nothing seemed to be able to touch him. We still get the odd tourist or researcher, but it's been forty years.

I used to think it sad how now he's just become part of the calendar, like Santa Claus and Easter Bunny and all those figures tied to a specific period in the year. Always at this time, eyes leaving light streaks, slowly sinking out of the sky.

But this time, I felt I should take a picture. It's pretty bad, but I felt it necessary.

He's never got this low before.
