Title: FFXIV Write 2024 - 24. Bar Characters: Estinien Varlineau Rating: Teen Summary: Tony Hawk was in this fic? Notes: None
Landing lightly outside of the Seventh Heaven, Estinien dropped from the clouds, surprising a few people nearby.
He did not bother to acknowledge them. A sudden fit of nostalgia had come over him while he just happened to be in the area, and he was just here now to check out the old haunt. He walked inside, setting aside his spear.
The place had changed some, but also was much like how he had remembered. The wandering minstrel was in his corner, tuning his harp. He could have swore he saw the man over in Tuliyollal, but then again, he was pretty certain he saw that man practically everywhere. He didn't recognize too many other people, but it had been some time since the Scions had 'disbanded' and he had cause to drop in. And Revenant's Toll was not the kind of place one made a permanent home of. Come in, stay for a few seasons, then go where the adventure went.
Like he had.
He didn't recognize the barkeep, either, but that didn't have to mean anything either. He decided he'd sit down, grab a mug, enjoy the moment, and then go before he felt like he was overstaying his welcome. As he sat, he looked up, and was startled to see familiar faces looking back at him.
Painted pictures of all the Scions hung in the back wall. Where, he supposed there was no real reason to pretend at secrecy anymore. Even before he'd joined, their little organization was the worst kept secret on the star. He'd grown well used at Aymeric's excited near-breathless sharing of their tales of adventure and derring-do before he himself had even met them. The man could be like an overexcited spratling about topics that drew his interest.
None of that here, though. No sharing of stories tonight, unless the minstrel was plied to play a tune. Estinien himself was certainly no bard, and would be telling no tales.
He was admiring the details on the Warrior of Light's portrait in particular when the barkeep finally made their way to him.
"What'll it be?"
"Darkest stout you got and an Eft pie, if you still make those."
"Sure," said the barkeep, flipping a mug up in front of Estinien and beginning to pour. "Huh. You look just like that famous lancer guy we used to get through here, what was his name? Estinien? I wonder what he's up to these days?"
Estinien's eyes drifted to the right behind the barkeep as they poured his drink, and he locked eyes with the somewhat severe yet accurate recreation of his very own face that was hanging from the wall.
"This," he said.
The barkeep looked at him skeptically.
Well, no matter where you went, there you were, Estinien thought to himself as he decided to not clarify any further and just enjoy his drink.
When he left a half-bell later, his painting continued the watch in his stead.

Speaking of Faulkner, in 1925 he moved into a first-floor apartment on New Orleans’ Pirate’s Alley with artist William Spratling. It was here that he completed his first novel, Soldier’s Pay. After it was published, Faulkner left for Paris, yet the spirit of New Orleans never left him. So perhaps it’s only appropriate that his spirit has returned to his old home.
In 1993, 624 Pirate’s Alley was declared a Literary Landmark by the American Library Association. Today, it is the home of Faulkner House Books, and quite possibly the ghost of Faulkner himself. To this day, visitors to the bookstore report smelling the smoke of the author’s ever-present pipe, and seeing him hard at work at his writing desk.

RFK Wants to Send People to ‘Wellness Farms.’ The US Already Tried That.
The Secretary of Health and Human Services has said Americans “addicted” to opioids, antidepressants, and stimulants should be sent to “wellness farms” to be “re-parented.”
In a clip from a July 2024 virtual town hall that recirculated online earlier this year, now Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. argues that the US should combat addiction by opening “wellness farms” to help people get off opioids, antidepressants, and stimulants. Kennedy says people taking medications for conditions like depression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), along with those living with addiction, could spend three or four years growing organic produce on these farms to be “re-parented” and “reconnect with communities.”
. . .
Beginning in the 1890s and continuing through the first few decades of the 20th century, epileptic and "feebleminded” colonies sprung up around the US. The initial purpose of these colonies was to remove patients from overcrowded, badly run asylums and poorhouses in favor of farm life where they would have access to the outdoors. Under the colony model, patients generally lived in “cottages” designed to be more homelike than institutional. Patients were also given jobs, and many were expected to work on colony farms where they grew their own food. Dr. William Spratling, the medical superintendent of the Craig Colony for Epileptics in New York, declared that the farm model meant, “Nature, the great restorer, will have an opportunity to do her best.” It didn’t work.
. . .
Data from the Craig Colony — one of America’s first epileptic colonies, opened in 1896 — illustrates this point. During the 1940s, thanks to funding and staff limitations because of World War II, conditions in North American institutions were particularly grim. The institution’s 1943-1944 annual report to the state Commissioner of Mental Hygiene shows that less than 1% of patients were discharged as “cured” that year. During that same period, over 200 patients attempted to leave the colony without permission, and over 5% of the total patient population died.
Supporters of the colony model argued that — with time — clean air, sunshine, a restricted diet, and physical labor could heal patients of the medical conditions that ostracized them from society. But that didn’t happen.
If the goal was to actually segregate disabled people from public life, you could say the colony model succeeded.

Hey just a general PSA from someone officially diagnosed and documented:
Now is not the time to seek out an autism diagnosis.
RFK's plans have been made very clear and any diagnosis you do get will get you put on this "national disease registry" they're proposing.
Trust me when I say I completely understand the need for accommodations and a better understanding of yourself, but if you have gone this long without being diagnosed, you will be better off waiting.
Furthermore, listen to and advocate for folks who are diagnosed, especially folks with higher support needs. They'll be the first ones targeted for whatever bullshit "experimental treatments" the government tries to push.
Stay safe and look out for your neighbor.

With the development of new technology, it becomes possible to widen a range of tasks that can be fulfilled by computers. The tasks that modern researchers and programmers focus on are different in nature, but all of them must have practical significance and be helpful for users. This literature review is intended at studying the works devoted to geometric shape recognition. It focuses on geometric pattern recognition in machine learning discussed in modern articles from high-quality scholarly sources. The recognition of geometric and other patterns in machine learning did not become a popular research subject a long time ago. In their study devoted to the methods of texture recognition, Ojala et al. focus on the multiresolution approach to the classification of textures in black-and-white images with the help of “uniform local binary patterns” (985). The advantages of the method discussed above are presented by the ease of use, the ability to provide accurate results, and applicability to situations that involve nonuniformly illuminated scenes. The creation of algorithms that recognize simple geometric shapes is helpful in many fields of activity, including photography, challenge-response tests, and production. As is clear from the works that delve into the history of geometric shape recognition, the ability of computers to distinguish between various shapes is the key aspect of diagram understanding problematized in the twentieth century (Song et al. 936). Shape recognition methods are widely used in modern software systems that are capable of working with both digital and hand-sketched images (Song et al. 936). The variety of approaches to the recognition of geometric shapes allows creating programs with reference to specific tasks. Speaking about other trends in geometric pattern recognition discussed by modern experimentators, it is pivotal to focus on the Hough transform and its uses. As is stated by Fernández et al., the Hough transform is a popular technique used for shape recognition and the detection of complex elements in 2d images (3901). The technique was invented almost forty years ago, but it is still used in the machine analysis of various images. When it comes to the beneficial features of the Hough transform, modern researchers note its positive results in working with heterogeneous lighting conditions, low-quality images, or image noise (Mukhopadhyay and Chaudhuri 993). Despite the benefits of this technique for shape recognition, some authors argue that its voting processes need to be improved. For instance, Spratling believes that the need to vote for numerous parameter values results in “spurious peaks and quantization effects” (16). With that in mind, some aspects of the technique need improvement to provide more accurate results. The analysis of principal components or PCA is another method used to teach computers to differentiate between various geometrical shapes. The mentioned method is based on the extraction of principal components, a number of uncorrelated variables retrieved with the help of orthogonal transformations. PCA forms the basis of numerous approaches to geometric shape recognition in machine learning; for instance, Ahmed and Aradhya use it to test the subspace method of image recognition (10). As is clear from the review by Song et al., other popular and widely used shape recognition techniques for 2d images include “one-pass detection” and “randomized detection” (937). Additionally, the researchers list the use of global geometric properties of input elements for further filtering and recognition. In the end, by teaching computers to recognize simple and complex geometric shapes, it is possible to solve a number of visual tasks related to image analysis, the protection of data, and even quality control. Nowadays, the methods of machine learning are widely used to create systems capable of recognizing geometric patterns in various types of images, including binary ones. Popular methods of shape recognition and extraction are based on well-known techniques such as the Hough transform. #007.5 - A scarce sight in the wild, Squirtle can be found around small ponds, lakes, and secluded islands where the water is pure and unpolluted. Their shell is soft when born, but hardens soon after birth, providing a mobile shelter in times of need. Squirtle can even attack while in their shell by shooting out a spray of water from their mouth. As these Pokemon mature, they begin to sprout delicate ears, which help them maintain balance while swimming quickly. Once they start to venture into deeper waters, the tightly packed fur in their tails separates and grows longer, which allows maturing Squirtle to store air into the rich fur for extended dives.
#008.5 - Wartortle are viewed as symbols of old age and longevity, and legends exist of certain individuals said to have lived for over a millennia without evolving. As Wartortle age, they are instinctively driven to bulk up in preparation for the water cannons that develop inside their shells. The extra weight will one day help them withstand the recoil of the powerful water jets that can be fired, though the cannons are still growing internally and can only spray water at a very low pressure. As the jets develop, maturing Wartortle will shed the now-unnecessary fur on their ears and tails. In a pinch, they will still withdraw inside their protective shell.
Named: Squirtle - Spratle - Wartortle - Terrapond - Blastoise ⓘ
#009 Mega - When paired with Blastoisinite and a Trainer they truly trust, Blastoise are able to undergo the phenomenon called Mega Evolution. The energy from this process supercharges Blastoise’s shell and cannons, causing a new, huge mega launcher to appear. The single cannon is as powerful as a tank gun, and boasts a blast range so great that it can strike targets more than six miles away! To withstand the cannon’s additional weight and recoil, Mega Blastoise’s legs and back become increasingly tough and sturdy, increasing this Pokemon’s defenses.
