can you please open your DMs, you posted some bad misinformation. i don't want to appear antagonistic, but the "trauma survivors don't have to wear a mask" post is harmful.

This is a blog with multiple mods, we can’t use DMs. Tumblr literally does not have that function.

The link we posted was about why some people struggle with masks and that there’s not really a way to win that struggle - you either risk an attack or risk others' health. It just asked for some compassion in the form of not drilling someone without a mask (you can simply tell them not to come over / enter a store, etc, you don’t need to demand their reasons), and said survivors should remember to be kind to themselves if they struggle with shame or fear - these feelings coming from not wanting to out themselves as survivors to random people, whether by being asked why they aren’t wearing a mask or by having a panic attack in front of everyone.

It didn’t say all folks with PTSD can’t or shouldn’t wear a mask. Just that some struggle and it’s a difficult situation. It didn’t say that mask mandates are ableist or that nobody can tell people to stay away with a mask. 

On the contrary, advocates - including the Autistic Advocacy Network from whom we’ve reblogged from before and also has posts on the topic - generally recommend that if this is the case for you, avoid having to make the choice in the first place (ie stay home). We’ve reblogged similar posts saying as such, if I’m not mistaken.

Masks are necessary and nobody is denying it. Nobody is calling them a hoax or dangerous. I wouldn’t have reblogged it if I thought it was trying to do so. 

I’ve had a panic attack in a mask. I made myself leave the building for my and others’ safety - so I could get away from the crowd and take my mask off. It’s a thing that happens.

If anyone would like to give sources on ways to avoid a panic attack and react properly to one while in a mask, please provide! I think this is an important piece of information that should couple with that. We need to be able to protect disabled people and survivors as much as the general population. We deserve resources to help us deal with masks if we really can’t avoid going out, tricks to use to keep us calm or help us stay calm while we excuse ourselves.

thanks for deleting the post. you have tone policed me, and directly assumed that im not a scientist, and that i'm not disabled. there is an avenue, just stay the fuck at home. why should i want to be around someone not wearing a mask. stay home, plague rats.

I didn’t say you weren’t a scientist or disabled, nor did I assume any such thing. I said speaking like disabled people will ever have it easy was wrong. 

And it’s not tone policing to ask you to calm down over something like this, we’re not talking about oppression and discrimination nor violence. You demanded we open DMs and got overtly aggressive when I am trying to have a normal discussion with you. Edit: Also I’m asking you to calm down not because I think your points or arguments are less effective or wrong for it, but because I am literally just very tired and weepy and am just wanting some calmness, please. It’s imploring, not demanding.

And pulling the “plague rat” stuff is ridiculous when we’ve repeatedly supported mask mandates and never denied mask efficacy or the risks of COVID-19. I literally even said it’s not unreasonable to ask someone to stay away if they can’t use a mask. Are you actually not a follower?

I’m sorry you find asking for ways to help with masks so offensive. Not everyone can stay at home. I have nobody to help me, neither do thousands of disabled people, there are no delivery services where I live. “Stay at home” is not a perfect solution for us. “How to deal with a mask” is a reasonable question and discussion to have.
