Eddie came huffing down the stairs for the third time. He looks left, then right, then left again before walking into the kitchen.

Steve suppressed a smile. He needed to finish grading papers, not to be entertained by his husband’s third sweep of the house.

He heard the pantry door open and shut. Followed by each cabinet — including the ones up above the counter. They’re getting closer and closer to minute ten.

Eddie huffed. The tell tale creak of their back door signaled Eddie stepped into the mudroom.

“Ronnie Bee, we said that outside was off limits!” He called out. “If you’re outside, you’re a cheater cheater pumpkin eater!”

A small giggle came from the living room.

Steve could only imagine Eddie twisted in place, his curls whipping around his shoulders as he heard the small taunt from inside.

The screen door slammed shut as Eddie slid back into the dining room, stopping directly behind Steve at the table.

“Oh, sweet husband of mine,” Eddie sang, his hands land softly on Steve’s shoulders, gently massaging the stiff muscles. Steve closed his eyes, leaning back into the touch. “I know you’re preoccupied with your work, but I have simply misplaced our daughter.”

“Daughter?” Steve asked simply. “What daughter?”

Another quiet giggle escaped tiny lips.

“You know, the one that’s got mousy brown hair,” Eddie ran a hand through Steve’s hair, gently scratching his scalp. “Or the one that’s peppered with freckles on her face like her papa.”

Eddie leaned down to press a kiss to Steve’s lips.

“Oh,” Steve said softly. “That one.”

“Yes,” Eddie said. “That one.”

“I’m sworn to secrecy,” Steve said flatly. “Sorry, lover.”

“What if I did the dishes tonight?” Eddie offered.

Steve hummed with contemplation. He shook his head no and turned back to his work.

“And a back rub?” Eddie suggested, leaning in with his breath hot against Steve’s neck. “I know you got some knots we could work out together.”

“She’s hiding behind the sofa,” Steve admitted.

“Traitor!” The small voice shouted.

Eddie squeezed Steve’s shoulders, a quick kiss, then he’s off towards the living room.

There’s a squeal of delight, pattering of socked feet running on the hardwood floor, and a shared laughter from two of his favorite people.

Steve sighed happily, stacking the papers together before joining the mischief in the living room.

The papers can wait.
