Pairings: Hatake Kakashi/Umino Iruka
Warnings: None
Summary: Kakashi has noticed Iruka struggling with a few things now that they’re older. He decides to try and help his husband out in any way he can, without being noticed.
Shinobi die young. That’s what Kakashi had always been told growing up. Even the best of the best would be lucky to see old age, either falling in battle or succumbing to their wounds after a mission.
Only the lucky ones lived to see retirement.
He had been lucky for his generation, and retirement was sweet. No more missions to go on, no endless amounts of paperwork waiting for him each morning at the Hokage’s office, and no students in need of being moulded into soldiers to fight wars that he no longer could.
Retirement was sweet, and it was even sweeter with Iruka by his side.
Of course, there were some negatives to living a long, fulfilling life. For Kakashi, it was Arthritis, hearing loss, and busted knees from years of use and abuse. For Iruka, it was a decrease in his visual range and increased forgetfulness.
Kakashi adjusted well enough to his issues. Specialized equipment around the house to help make it easier to do certain things made his life a lot easier than it had been a few months ago.
For Iruka, it wasn’t as easy to adjust. He tried to keep a calendar for appointments but always found himself misplacing it or forgetting to write things down. And his depth perception had gotten so bad that he often missed his coffee mug when he tried to grab it or dropped his house keys on the floor instead of inside of the bowl that they kept by the door for them.
The worst was when he was trying to eat ramen. With his depth perception slowly starting to fail him, there was more than one occasion where he had either missed the bowl completely while trying to eat or spilled boiling ramen directly onto his lap.
It was a growing concern for Kakashi. One that he wanted to help with as much as possible. Of course, he didn't want Iruka to catch him trying to help. Iruka was a proud man, even if he did try to keep that little aspect of himself hidden.
Organized, prompt, careful. That was what Iruka had been known for all his life, and no matter how much he struggled these days, he was still proud of those traits and determined to keep them.
So Kakashi had to find ways to help his husband out without getting caught and risking the wrath of a proud ex-Academy principal.
Sometimes that help involved nudging Iruka’s coffee cup a bit closer or a bit further away, depending on where it was and where Iruka was reaching for. Avoiding a spill all over the table that could run down onto their legs, or a completely missed coffee cup and that annoyed ‘tsk’ that Iruka made whenever he was disappointed in himself.
Other Times, it was a bit more difficult. If Iruka had an appointment with the doctors Kakashi would make sure to write it down on the calendar they kept in the kitchen and his own personal calendar. He would also ‘remind’ Iruka the day of the appointment by asking him what time his appointment was at. There was always a panicked note in Iruka’s voice while he tried to figure out what it was Kakashi was talking about, but as soon as he looked at the calendar and saw the appointment that Kakashi had written down for him he relaxed and started to get ready.
At the end of the day though, he usually succeeded. Major spills and missed appointments were avoided. Of course, when it came to more personal plans, Kakashi usually preferred to remind Iruka about them just before he was supposed to leave the house.
It allowed him to sneak in a few extra minutes of cuddles.
“Are you coming?” Iruka called from the bedroom, pulling Kakashi out of his thoughts and back to the present moment. Before his thoughts had started to wander he had been looking at himself in the mirror. Examining every wrinkle and grey hair and thinking about how much he had aged over the years.
How much more life he had gotten to see, with Iruka by his side. A small smile tugged at his lips. “On my way.” He called back, checking his face once more before finally turning around and heading back into the bedroom. There, lying in bed with a hand stretched out towards him was Iruka.
Light of his life.
The best thing to ever happen to him.
“You took your sweet time in there,” Iruka teased. “Trying to avoid coming to bed?”
“And miss out on extra cuddles?” throwing the blanket back, Kakashi fell back into the bed with a groan and waited for Iruka to carefully place the blanket over his body. “Not a chance. You’re stuck with me, don’t forget that.”
“Oh no, such a terrible fate has befallen me,” Throwing a hand over his forehead, Iruka fell back against the bed and sighed dramatically. “Whatever shall I do? How can I continue with my life knowing that I am stuck with Konoha’s prettiest boy?”
And people called Kakashi the dramatic one.
Turning onto his side to face his husband, he slipped an arm around his waist and gently bumped his nose against his shoulder. “Konoha’s prettiest boy, hmm?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know,” Iruka reached over and smacked him in the shoulder lightly. “Even at our age, there are still people who can’t help but turn and look at you. I don’t blame them of course. You’ve hardly aged at all since you were twenty-seven.”
Lies. He had so many new wrinkles and more grey hairs than he could count. Though, the bonus of having silver hair from birth was that other people couldn’t see the grey hairs he got. Not like the ones that had started to take over Iruka’s beautiful brown hair years ago.
“I think they’re wrong,” he smiled, pressing a tender kiss against Iruka’s shoulder. “I’m the lucky one here. I got to marry the cutest boy in the whole world. How can you get better than that?”
“Oh I don’t know,” turning his head, Iruka returned Kakashi’s gesture with a gentle kiss against his forehead and chuckled when Kakashi instantly melted into him. “I think I win in the end though. After all, my husband likes to do small things that he thinks I won’t notice just to make my life easier. Like shoving my coffee cup closer to me this morning, or reminding me that I had lunch plans with Naruto at Ichiraku Ramen.”
His little actions hadn’t gone as unnoticed as he’d originally thought.
“And you don’t mind?” he asked, a little confused by the fact that Iruka wasn’t giving him a lecture. “Mr. ‘proud Academy principal’ doesn’t mind that his husband helps him out once in a while?”
“Even the best Academy principals need help once in a while,” pressing another kiss against Kakashi’s forehead, Iruka chuckled when he was rewarded with a soft grunt. “Thank you, Kakashi. I appreciate it.”
Burying his face into Iruka’s neck, Kakashi mumbled a soft ‘you’re welcome’ against his skin. He hadn’t thought it was a big deal. It was his job to help Iruka out when he could. To make his life easier.
Iruka repeated himself with laughter in his voice, whispering the words against Kakashi’s forehead over and over again. It was embarrassing that he had been caught so easily. Especially when he had been trying not to let Iruka know what he was doing, but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy the recognition of his efforts. That hearing Iruka saying those sweet ‘thank you’s ‘ to him didn’t make his stomach twist up in knots.
Even after all the years, he had spent married to Iruka, he couldn’t help but feel like he had won an award whenever his husband thanked him for the little things that he did.
That’s what being in love was like, at least in his experience.
Feeling like there was no better accomplishment in his life than just being there for the man he loved.

Hello, Sensei
Word Count: 2532
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/Umino Iruka
Warnings: Poor Flirting
Summary: Kakashi's in Konoha to have a chat with the Acadamy Sensei about a student exchange that he and the Hokage have disguised, but he's not expecting the man he's there to meet to be so... Handsome.
Konoha had never been a village Kakashi spent much time in. Even when he had visited to watch Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro in their chunin exam fight he hadn’t taken much time to appreciate the view. With too many things on his mind at the time, it was hard for him to look around at all of the things the village had to offer.
Now, as he made his way down the busy streets with the three of him by his side, he couldn’t help but look around and notice all of the ways in which Konoha was so different from Suna. Not just in terms of weather, which was a lot kinder on Kakashi’s skin than the harsh Suna sun, but the culture. How the shops were built, some of the things that were being sold, the variety of different foods that he had never tried before.
“You know,” Temari spoke up, smiling when he turned to look at her. “Maybe after this meeting, we can look around. Try some new foods or look at some of the shops.”
“I would like to see what kind of things they have to offer,” Kankuro agreed, a bright playful smile on his face when Kakashi glanced his way. “Maybe I can find something new to add to my puppets.”
“Or just something to decorate that dungeon you call a room,” Temari poked at him. “Maybe even something to wear yourself that’s a little less…”
“That’s enough,” stopping in his tracks, Kakashi watched as the three of them turned to look at him. “You two can explore if you want. You don’t need to sit in on this meeting.”
“You may be Kazekage, Nii-san, but you still need guards,” Temari huffed. “If we leave, someone might try to take off your hat and get a peek at what’s underneath, and we all know how you feel about that.”
Reaching up to touch the brim of the Kazekage’s hat, Kakashi smiled to himself. He wasn’t used to having his face out in the open. Growing up, he had always worn a mask or kept a hood over his head. It was a necessity according to the elders. One he hadn’t understood until the first time he saw Konoha’s Hokage, Hatake Sakumo.
“I’m sure Gaara can keep me safe on his own,” He looked at the shinobi in question, laughing when his eyes widened. “Isn’t that right?”
“I-of course,” Glancing towards his siblings, Gaara nodded. “I’ll keep him safe, don’t worry.”
“Good. Now, get out of here you two,” nodding towards the shops, he smiled when Temari and Kankuro gave each other a concerned look. “We’ll be fine, I promise.”
“Well, if you say so,” Waving a hand goodbye, Temari ran off with Kankuro hot on her heel. “Try not to get into too much trouble without us, Nii-san!”
Watching them go, Kakashi couldn’t help but smile to himself. It had been years since he had seen either of them with such a carefree attitude. Actually able to enjoy themselves, without feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders every second of the day. It was hard for him to admit, but there was no doubt about it.
They really were better off without Rasa-Sensei.
“Come on,” He turned back to Gaara. “I’m sure that this won’t take long.”
“Right,” falling into place by Kakashi’s side once more, Gaara continued to walk with him. For a second Kakashi was sure that they were going to fall back into a comfortable silence. Neither of them being much for talking, but as Konoha’s academy came into view down the street Gaara was apparently overcome with curiosity. “Why did you agree to this?” He asked, looking at Kakashi with big bright eyes. “Wouldn’t it have worked if you sent Temari or even Baki in your place?”
“It might have,” he agreed, and it had definitely been a thought that crossed his mind when he was talking to Sakumo about their little plan. “But I was told it would be best if the Kazekage made the appearance himself, and I happen to agree.”
Perhaps because the man he was agreeing with was so kind and understanding. Kakashi found it hard to say no to him when he showed so much trust in him. More than he deserved.
“You seem to trust him,’ Gaara continued. “The Hokage I mean.”
“I guess that would be surprising,” He hadn’t exactly been a fan of Sakumo’s growing up. After all, it hadn’t taken long for him to figure out why the elders hated looking at him. Why he was always made to wear a mask and told never to go near Konoha unless absolutely necessary, and even then he had to ensure his mask was in place and his hair was covered. One look at Sakumo told him more about his life than anyone in Suna ever dared to, including his own mother. “I have my reasons though, I can promise you that.”
“I see. I guess not everyone has a terrible relationship with their father,” Stopping in his tracks, Kakashi closed his eyes and prayed that there was no one around from Konoha that had overheard what Gaara just said. It wasn’t something he wanted to have to explain to strangers, and there was no doubt that Sakumo would have trouble dealing with the backlash if it was found out his child was a Suna shinobi. “Did I say something wrong?”
“Maybe just...don’t say that out loud?” he suggested. “It’s not common knowledge, and I’d rather not have it spread as gossip before we can figure out how to approach the issue.”
He’d already taken a huge step showing Sakumo his face. Exposing himself to the one person he had always thought he’d have to keep himself hidden from. Telling the rest of the world…
It just wasn’t something he was ready to do yet.
“We should get moving,” Gaara reminded him. “You’re meeting is in five minutes. You don’t want to make a bad first impression by being late.”
That was true enough.
Pushing his concerns back for the moment, Kakashi continued to walk. Headed straight for Konoha’s Acadamy, where he’d meet with the Hokage and the Acadamy Sensei he had chosen to take part in this little ‘student exchange’ that they had planned.
---------------------------------------------------------
What was Lord Fifth thinking?
Of all the people in Konoha to schedule a meeting with the Kazekage for, he had gone with Iruka. An Acadamy Sensei. The most he had to do with ‘diplomatic relations’ was when he worked at the mission desk and took reports from returning shinobi.
Scrubbing away today’s lesson from the blackboard, Iruka tried desperately to calm his nerves.
He dealt with Jonin level shinobi every day, yelling at them for handing in messy reports or scolding them for coming to him just to hand in their report when they were bloody and in need of a hospital visit above anything else. Surely it couldn’t be any harder to deal with the Kazekage.
At least, he hoped it was just as easy.
The soft tap of knuckles against his classroom door pulled him out of his thoughts. Placing the eraser down on the blackboard ledge, he turned towards the door and took a deep breath.
“Come in!”
This was it. Standing there watching as the door to his classroom slid open he knew that there was no escape. He was meeting the Kazekage. It was his job to explain the curriculum for Konoha’s Shinobi Acadamy and convince the Kazekage that it was worth allowing his future shinobi to experience for a week. He was not ready.
“Sorry I’m late,” The voice he’s greeted with is not at all what he’s expecting. It’s soft and cheerful, the complete opposite of how Naruto had described the Sand Shinobi he knew. “Had a little detour on the way.”
Pursing his lips, Iruka examined the person in front of him. Though, there wasn’t much to see. His face was covered by the large Kazekage hat sitting atop his head, and his body was nowhere to be seen under what could only be described as a blanket.
How did the Kage’s wear such garments? Didn’t it get hot? Especially in a desert.
“Uhh, Sensei?” Giving his head a shake, Iruka buried his hand in his hair and chuckled. This was not the time for him to be getting lost in such silly thoughts.
“It’s no problem,” he assured the Kazekage. “I was just cleaning up after a long day. Though I am glad you finally appeared. Lord Fifth asked me to make a detailed explanation of our curriculum to go through with you, and I’m afraid it may take some time. He explained that the two of you were thinking of doing an exchange program with the academy students. A week in the other village to see what their new allies learn in school and get a feel for their culture and ideas. Is that right?”
“It...yes,” there’s a hint of confusion in the Kazekage’s voice. “Uh, is it alright if we sit down?”
Looking around the room, Iruka cringed. He had forgotten to grab another chair for the Kazekage to sit in.
“Uh, ya. Just one sec,” bolting out of the room, he ran around the corner and into the next classroom, desperately ignoring the judgemental look he got from the kid standing just outside the classroom. The Kazekage’s guard, no doubt.
As soon as he was there, he pinpointed the teacher’s chair and headed straight for it.
Now that he had a seat for the Kazekage, he rushed back into his own classroom, stopping at the door when he saw the man already sitting on the edge of the front row bench where his students viewed his class from.
“S-sorry. I brought a comfier seat if you want,” Setting the chair down, he laughed awkwardly when the kazekage turned to look at it.
“I’m fine here,” Kicking himself for his mistake, Iruka made his way towards the seats. If the Kazekage was going to sit there, so could he. At least then he wouldn’t feel like he was talking to one of his students. Though, the man’s guard was no older than Naruto so it wouldn’t be that awkward. He could just pretend it was a parent-teacher conference.
“You said you had a curriculum written out to show me?”
Right. Heading back to his desk he snatched up the paper he had written down everything on and turned to face the Kazekage once more.
“I’ve got all of our lessons organized, along with a detailed explanation of what exactly I teach my students,” He began to explain. “There’s also time’s so that you know exactly what the kids will be learning at each part of the day, and how long we’ll be focusing o-”
His brain screeched to a halt when he finally looked up from the paper and back at the Kazekage just in time to see him starting to take his hat off. The kazekage, a man who no one in all of Konoha could describe because there was nothing to know.
His face was always covered, and his personality was just as guarded by simple sentences and short meetings, and here he was just taking off his hat in front of a complete stranger.
And if that wasn’t enough to make Iruka speechless, the Kazekage was handsome too.
With bright silver hair and sunken eyes, Iruka finds it impossible to tear his gaze away from the man. What’s worse is that he can’t even see the man’s full face, with his mouth and nose covered by a mask that left more questions than answers.
Why Lord Fifth had chosen him out of everyone for this task, Iruka still wasn’t quite sure, but it found it difficult to complain now that he knew that the Kazekage was one of the most handsome humans he had ever met.
Though, there’s something in the back of his mind that tells him the man looks familiar. Like he has looked into eyes just like that before or seen that exact type of spiky silver hair somewhere else, even though his mind refuses to pinpoint just where he recognizes them at the moment.
“Is everything alright?” His face feels like it’s on fire when he notices the Kazekage staring back at him, the smallest hint of a smile lighting up those gorgeous eyes.
“I-Yes,” desperate to get his mind off of the Kazekage’s handsome face, Iruka shut his eyes and held the paper with his curriculum out towards the man. “Everything’s on here. You can read through it and ask me any questions that may pop up or ask for more detail. It’s really just an outline at best and-”
The Kazekage held up a hand to silence him.
“I think I’ve got it,” his eyes closed. A familiar sign of a smile, even if Iruka still couldn’t quite place where he knew it from. “Though I would like to hear it from you. Otherwise, this meeting would be a waste of time.”
Right.
This was supposed to be his chance to prove that the Kazekage’s academy students would gain something from taking part in his classes. That’s why Lord fifth had scheduled this me-
“Lord Fifth!” Smacking his hands together, Iruka cringed when the Kazekage tilted his head. “I just...I mean…”
“You just realized that I look like Lord Fifth?” nodding his head, Iruka chuckled awkwardly. It was embarrassing to admit it had taken him this long to realize. After all, only Lord Fifth had such spiky silver hair and that closed-eye smile that put everyone at ease in an instant.
Though, that did bring up a whole lot of new questions.
“How about I explain it after you tell me about your curriculum,” the Kazekage offered, chuckling when Iruka stared at him with wide, hopeful eyes. “Perhaps over lunch?”
Lunch?
Was the Kazekage-
No, it couldn’t be. He was an Acadamy sensei. Surely the Kazekage of Suna didn’t want a date with him. He was just being nice. Trying to make friends.
“Is that an offer for a date, Lord Kazekage?” Closing his eyes, he kicked himself mentally. Of all the things he could have said, e had chosen that one. If the Kazekage had been asking him out on a date, he was certainly rethinking his proposition now that he knew just what a hopeless dork Iruka really was.
“Sensei,” being greeted with such a beautiful smile, Iruka can’t help but melt. Even if he can’t see the man’s mouth, he’s certain there’s no smile in the world that’s better than his. It’s impossible. “I’ve never had a chance to learn how to flirt, so perhaps I’m not getting it through correctly. I was asking you out on a date.”
Oh.
“Oh! I-Yes,” Never in his life had he had so much difficulty speaking, and he had just met the man. There was no way that this could get worse. He really hoped this didn’t get any worse. “I’d love that. If you’d like, I know a great place for Ramen.”

In My Way
Au: Spy Au
Words: 1931
Rating: Teen
Characters: Hatake Kakashi and Sasori
Warnings: murder, Blood, excessive amounts of Sass. Graphic depictions of violence.
Summary: Kakashi has a job to do, but there’s a familiar face in the crowd that tells him it won’t be as easy as he originally thought.
Get into the party, take out the target, get out without being caught.
The mission was simple. Something that he could do with his eyes closed, except for one small detail.
Sasori.
The deadliest Toxicologist known among every intelligence agency around the world. His work with poisons was revered by every toxicologist, including Anko. Even if she refused to admit it.
His presence at the party, while a welcome sight to Kakashi’s eyes thanks to that beautiful black and the red suit he had chosen to wear, was a hindrance to his mission. Not because Sasori was doing anything to stop him from completing the job.
It was quite the opposite judging by the fact that he had just seen Sasori drop something into his target's glass mere seconds ago.
Their goals were the same, and he’d rather die than allow Sasori to get the pleasure of saying he killed the target.
Making his way through the small crowd, he set his eyes on the phone in his hand. A convenient distraction to use, typing away furiously to an imaginary friend as he collided head-on with the target.
Red wine spilled all down his front, staining the white shirt he had chosen to wear to the party and earning him the ire of his target.
“Would you watch where you’re-” Taking one look at Kakashi, the man cut himself off and immediately changed his demeanour. “Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize that you were there.”
If Kakashi was a weak-willed man he would find himself easily fooled by the soft tone of voice and the gentle touch of his arm. Thankfully he was trained for this exact situation.
“Sorry,” he laughed awkwardly, wanting his target to lower his guard. “I should have been paying attention. I was just…” His eyes darted down to his phone, a sad look crossing over his face for just a second before he plastered a smile on his face. “Never mind. Are you alright?”
“I’m not the one with red wine spilled down my front,” the target chuckled. “Your shirt is ruined.”
Feeling an arm coming down around his shoulder, Kakashi allowed the other man to turn him around and lead him towards a private table while chatting his ear off about the party and how much effort he had put into making it perfect. Something Kakashi forced himself to smile along with and listen to, even as he kept his eye out for Sasori.
This wasn’t going to be his only attempt, and Kakashi still had information that he needed to get before he could finally take care of the job himself. He just had to keep the man alive long enough to get that information, which meant keeping Sasori from slipping him any poison.
A task that was easier said than done given Sasori’s history.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Getting the target to trust him hadn’t taken long at all. For someone good at manipulating others, the man was just as susceptible to his tactics. Or he was just a sucker for a pretty face, and Kakashi didn’t have a pretty face.
Now he just had to get the man to spill the beans about some of the people he worked with.
“It sounds like a lonely job,” toying with the little umbrella in the drink he had been offered, Kakashi kept an eye out for any sign of Sasori. “Do you at least have any friends to keep you company? Or are you one of those people who thinks he doesn’t need friends?”
His target laughed, one arm resting on the seat behind Kakashi. “Friends are a hindrance in my line of work. I prefer to keep people at a length. Emotions are just another factor in the equation of life that I don’t want to have to deal with.”
A line he had heard far too many times over the years, from enemies and allies alike.
“Well, that just sounds like a lonely life to me,” Leaning forward on the table he forced himself not to cringe or lash out when he felt the man’s fingers playing with the edges of his hair. “No one to keep you company.”
“You could keep me company.” The offer is real, though Kakashi knows it would be only for a night if he were to take him up on it. Not that he needs to. He’s so close to getting what he wants.
Which makes it all the more annoying when he sees a familiar head of blazing red hair walking past acting like nothing is going on as he tips something into their target's drink.
Stubborn shit.
Leaning in a little closer to his target, Kakashi notched the charm up by fifty percent and gave him his best smile. “And what would that involve, hmm?” poking the man in the chest playfully, he chuckled when he was rewarded with a soft grunt. “Come on now. I can’t just jump in without knowing what I’m getting myself into.”
With little distance left between them, Kakashi used the distraction to push his target's glass back just a bit. Not knocking it off of the table, but shoving it right to the edge. Hopefully, his target wouldn’t realize and would take care of the rest for him.
“There’s a lot of things that it involves,” the target's smile sent shivers down Kakashi’s spine, though he kept a neutral expression on his face. “It could involve getting to know each other a bit better, some fun activities in private...” he brought a hand up to cup Kakashi’s cheek, cursing when his elbow collided with the glass of whiskey and sent it toppling over onto the ground.
“Oh,” tilting his head, he smiled when the target looked back at him. “I guess I’m not the only clumsy one tonight.”
Somewhere far away he could just imagine Sasori screaming into a napkin and cursing his name, and just that image gave him the strength he needed to keep flirting with the man in front of him.
He was going to get what he wanted no matter how damn hard Sasori tried to stop him.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Once he had finally gotten the target to start talking it was smooth sailing ahead. It had only taken a couple of drinks until he was just drunk enough to start talking. Three of which had been poisoned at some point by a very determined Sasori, but Kakashi had found a way to get rid of those ones without being too obvious about what he was trying to do,
It was honestly a little tiring. Trying to save his target’s life when he knew that at the end of the night the man would be dead anyway, regardless of if it was Kakashi or Sasori who killed him.
Just a bit more and he’d have everything that he needed.
“It sounds to me like you don’t get along with this guy too much. Why do you keep working with him if he’s causing you so many problems?” he asked innocently as he stirred his drink with the little umbrella.
“Best dealer in the business,” his target laughed bitterly. “Couldn’t find someone better no matter how hard I tried. And trust me, I’ve tried.”
So close. He could almost taste the successful mission.
Which of course was exactly when an interruption arrived in the form of a hand being slammed down on the table between them and furious brown eyes burrowing holes into his very soul.
“Can I help you?” tilting his head he met Sasori’s gaze head-on. This was not a mission he was willing to fail just because the redhead couldn’t take a hint and leave his target alive for five more minutes.
“You have been hogging the cutest guy in this whole party for the past two hours,’ that was not a response he had been expecting. “I get it, you’re adorable. You have a great smile, but you could at least share his attention.”
A great smile?
Folding his hands together Kakashi rested his chin on top of them and gave Sasori that ‘great smile’ that he had mentioned. “Isn’t there someone else you could bother for the attention your daddy never gave you?”
If looks were as deadly as Sasori’s poisons, he would certainly be dead right now. A well-deserved death of course, since the jab was a lot more personal coming from the son of Konoha Intelligence Division’s White fang. After all, anyone who knew Sasori was more than aware of his father’s death.
A death he had met during a mission gone wrong against the White fang.
“You think you’re all that, don’t you?” Sasori looked like he was ready to pounce, and Kakashi didn’t doubt that if he did there would be a poisoned Kunai in his hand. “You’re not even that good looking. I think he could do better.”
Lies.
He was drop-dead gorgeous.
“It sounds to me like someone’s just jealous he couldn’t catch the cute Guy’s attention. You really should lower your standards a little to match up with what’s achievable for you.”
He’s certain Sasori’s actually about to jump over the table and attack him after that one, but their target places a hand on each of their chests to hold them back. A precautionary measure that wouldn’t stop them if they decided to fight.
“Come on you two, there’s no reason to get nasty,” His words are slurred a little from all of the alcohol he has consumed, and the smile on his face is creepy and almost predatory. Just looking at it makes Kakashi shiver. “You don’t have to fight over me. We could always just share. You’re both very…”
No amount of information was worth hearing that sentence finished. Not that he would get the last bit of information that he wanted thanks to Sasori’s little interruption.
And since there was nothing else to be gained, Kakashi didn’t feel bad about unsheathing his hidden knife and plunging it into the man’s neck at the same time as Sasori.
It was messy, disgusting, definitely drew more attention than he would have liked, and yet oh so satisfying to finally put an end to that aggravating nails on a chalkboard voice.
“You ruined my mission,” He narrowed his eyes towards Sasori, sour that he hadn’t gotten all of the information that he had wanted. “You couldn’t have just waited another five minutes, could you?”
“And let you get a perfect mission while I've been cursing your name for the past two hours every time you managed to dump his drink or get rid of the poisoned donut even though I know you didn’t see me put it there? Not a chance.”
Donut? He hadn’t realized that the donut he had handed off to one of the man’s bodyguards to distract them was poisoned. It was a good thing the man had wrapped it up in a napkin and tucked it away in his pocket for later.
“Well, you got what you wanted,” scanning the area, he growled when he saw that everyone in the room had turned to look at them. “Anyways, congratulations on the kill. Hope your bosses are happy, don’t call me and I won’t call you.”
Planting his hands on the table, Kakashi heaved himself over it and made a run for the nearest window, praying that Rin had been paying attention the whole time and was on her way in to pick him up.
The quicker he got out of here, the less likely he was to have to deal with Sasori’s bruised ego.

Just One Scene, That’s All I ask
AU: Actors Au
Words: 1899
Rating: General
Pairings: Hatake Kakashi/Umino Iruka
Warnings: None
Summary: It’s a routine at this point. To check their scripts, hoping for a hint of a scene with the other man. Even the smallest one. Yet, no matter how many times they look they can never seem to find one. So they decide to take matters into their own hands.
Flipping through the pages of his script was a normal occurrence for Kakashi. He wanted to know the scenes that he had, who he had them with, and if he could memorize the lines easily or if it would take a bit more work.
Getting ready for the more emotional scenes was important too. If need be he could make himself cry, of course, but the more warning he got before acting out those types of scenes the better.
Today, though, he was looking for a particular type of scene.
Something that he would be sharing with a cute brunette. Maybe a scene at Ichiraku Ramen with the two of them laughing over something stupid Naruto said.
Or a more touching scene where they reminisce about how Naruto used to be.
He didn’t dare get his hopes up for anything significant. The build-up in their characters’ relationship still had to happen, and oh how desperate he was for it to actually happen.
Him sweeping Iruka off of his feet. Saving him from the big bad of the day and then taking him out for dinner after everything was said and done.
Perhaps even making Iruka dinner.
Something.
Anything.
Slamming his script shut, he sighed.
No matter how many times he looked it over, or how hard he wished for something to change. For a hidden scene to just pop out at him and surprise him, it didn’t.
There was nothing. As usual.
“Is it so much to ask?” He spoke to the empty changing room, leaning back in his chair to stare up at the white ceiling. “Just one scene. Even a crumb would be better than this.”
Why were the writers so determined to keep Iruka and him apart? Did they know the chemistry would be too much?
We’re they afraid that the two of them would be a more popular pairing than Naruto and Hinata? It wasn’t their fault that Naruto couldn’t make up his mind about who he wanted to have the most chemistry on screen with. They needed to talk to him about that problem, not punish Iruka and Kakashi.
“Maybe I just need to show them,” he grumbled to himself, his brain already working on a plan. “They just need to see that Iruka and I would make a good on-screen couple. That we need more scenes together. Naruto’s dad and weird uncle. They can’t say no to that.”
With that decided, Kakashi sat up in his seat and sprang to his feet, determined to get to the writer’s room before they left for the day.
They’d see reason, they had to.
If they didn’t, Kakashi would have to resort to drastic measures
A fight scene between Naruto and Sasuke, a scene with Sakura and Ino mending their friendship, and a scene at Ichiraku Ramen with Team seven.
That was it.
There was absolutely nothing of interest.
Throwing his script down on the table, Iruka slapped his hands over his eyes and groaned.
“Every time,” he grumbled under his breath, wondering if the writers would ever take pity on him and give him the scenes that he wanted. “Why are they like this?”
“No scenes with Kakashi again?” Spreading his fingers open, he glared at Anko between the small spaces. “I don’t see why you’re complaining. We’re secondary characters if that. We’re lucky if we get screen time at all.”
That was true, and it wasn’t like he didn’t have other work to focus on. It was just that he had been looking forward to having a scene with Kakashi ever since the pre-chunin exam arc scene where his character scolded Kakashi for putting his students into the exams.
They could get a heated emotional scene that pitted them against each other, but not something more relaxed? With less on the line?
He wasn’t asking for that much, was he? Just a chance to show them the chemistry that Kakashi and he had. Prove to everyone that the two of them deserved more scenes together. That Naruto’s ‘Dads’ should become an official couple in the show.
“Jeez,” Leaning back in her seat, Anko sighed. “If you’re so pressed about it why don’t you go talk to the writers?”
Talk to the writers.
That was a genius plan!
“Oh, no. Iruka, I was joking.” Anko protested, but it was too late. Before she could even hope to stop him, Iruka was on his feet and headed towards the door.
The writers were going to get a talking to, and they were going to give him and Kakashi a scene together.
No matter how long he had to keep them back to get it, he wouldn’t leave until he had secured one scene.
It didn’t have to be the biggest scene, just something.
Anything.
Storming towards the writer’s room, Iruka reached out to grab the metal knob and swing the door open. A grand entrance before he laid his argument out for them. They wouldn’t be able to ignore that.
They’d have to give him what he wanted.
Except, before he could open the door he heard a familiar voice.
A voice that sent shivers down his spine.
Hatake Kakashi.
“One scene, that’s really not asking for so much,” Iruka couldn’t move. Refused to interrupt whatever it was Kakashi was trying to do, hoping against all odds that maybe Kakashi was there for the same thing he had come for. That he wasn’t alone in wanting more scenes with the other man. “It doesn’t even have to be a big scene. I’m not asking to take over the show. I just want one scene with him where we get to just be relaxed.”
“We’ve already planned out the next few episodes,” one of the writers spoke, her voice calm and friendly. “We don’t really have an opportunity to slap the two of you together randomly for a scene. It doesn’t work with the story progression.”
“But the story changes,” Kakashi continued. “There will be a chance where there’s an opening. A scene where maybe you could just...slip the two of us into the same room together. Let our characters talk.”
“That’s a long-winded way of saying ‘I want to date him but I’m too chicken shit to ask him out myself’” Mizuki’s voice was unmistakable. The playful taunting dripping in his words, begging to be punched in the face even if Iruka would regret it later when his friend bugged him about ‘over reacting’. “You want us to write you a scene with Iruka so you can flirt. Why don’t you just ask him out to coffee instead?”
“I-shut it!” Iruka could almost imagine the look on the other man’s face. A bright red blush creeping up his face and narrow dangerous eyes glaring daggers into Mizuki. “I’m just asking for one scene. Certainly, it can’t be that hard for you to write.”
Mizuki’s laughter filled the air.
“We’ll see what we can do, Kakashi-san,” Rin offered, a soft smile no doubt on her face as she tried to de-escalate the situation before Kakashi leaped over the table to attack Mizuki. “It might not be for a while though.”
“I’ll contain my disappointment,” the doorknob started to turn suddenly, but no matter how much Iruka wanted to make a run for it, he couldn’t. His feet were cemented in place, refusing to move an inch as the door opened in front of him. “Just try not to ruin it with another argument, please. We have enough of...oh!”
Standing there in front of him, with a surprised look on his face, was Hatake Kakashi.
Man of his dreams. The person he hadn’t been able to get his mind off of since their first scene together, and apparently the one who shared all of those feelings. Who wanted to have a scene with Iruka, just as badly as Iruka wanted a scene with him.
“Uh, hi,” Mizuki’s laughter echoed from the room behind Kakashi. “I was just…”
He had no excuse for being there. Nothing to say that would explain his presence and not embarrass him in the same breath.
“Coffee?” Kakashi blurted out, his face turning a deep red when he realized what he had said. “I mean…if you want. I could use some coffee, we could practice scenes together.”
The sound of a chair toppling over, followed by the hard thud of a body hitting the floor, told Iruka that Mizuki found this whole situation all too entertaining.
He wasn’t going to hear the end of it for weeks from his friend, and somehow he was alright with that.
“Coffee sounds great,” he smiled, leaning a little to the left and smiling towards all of the writers now staring at him and Kakashi. “Don’t think this gets you off of the hook though. He made a good point, and if you can write a cute scene with Asuma and Kurenai you can do the same for us.”
It’s what they deserved.
“So,” turning his attention back to Kakashi, his smile grew when he see the silver-haired hottie staring back at him with bright eyes. “Let’s get some coffee. My treat.”
It was the least he could do after Kakashi had argued so valiantly for them to have a cute scene together.
Coffee had gone well. So we’ll that Kakashi had mustered up the courage to ask Iruka out on a proper date. This time to dinner.
Then another date, to the movie theater where Iruka cuddled up against Kakashi’s shoulder halfway through the cheesiest romantic comedy Kakashi could have possibly chosen.
Then there was the water park, where Kakashi spent half the time goofing around and splashing Iruka.
More dinner dates, and a few relaxing nights at home.
Really, the last few months had been amazing. Kakashi had gotten a fantastic, handsome boyfriend and he had been enjoying himself so much that he had forgotten about that cute scene he so desperately wanted with Iruka before.
Until…
“A wedding!?” Iruka jumped up in his seat suddenly, the new script open in his hands and an excited look on his face. “Kakashi! Kakashi look!”
Having the script shoved into his face, Kakashi set his cup of coffee down and carefully took it from Iruka. Whatever the writers had come up with they certainly had done a number on Iruka.
Kakashi’s pretty sure he has never seen him this excited.
“Alright, let’s see.” reading the page that Iruka had open, Kakashi felt a smile pulling at his lips slowly as the words sank in. “Oh?”
A wedding. Naruto and Hinata’s wedding to be exact, but that’s not the scene that had gotten Iruka so excited.
It was the father’s speech. When Iruka’s character was set to stand up and talk about Naruto and all the ways he had grown over the years.
With Kakashi’s character there by his side, an arm wrapped around his waist.
“About damn time,” he whispered, lowering the script to smile back at Iruka. “It only took them two years.”
Rushing around the table, Iruka wrapped his arms around Kakashi’s neck and kissed him. Hard and passionate, and absolutely perfect.
Not even the sound of his dogs barking in the background, begging him to let them outside, could interrupt this moment for Kakashi.
He was in paradise, with Iruka here in his arms kissing him, and he was going to enjoy it.

To The Future
Words: 1141
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai
Warnings: Mentions of War
Summary: Now that the Fourth Great Shinobi War is over, and everything has started to settle down, Kakashi and Gai decide what to do next with their lives.
for @alumort
The signs of war were finally starting to fade away from the world. People were no longer scared to wake up every morning, wondering if it would be the last day they opened their eyes. Those who had lost someone had done their mourning and were slowly starting to move forward with their lives.
Most importantly, Naruto had finally found his place. As the hero of the world, he was no longer living his life in hiding. Avoiding stray shinobi who may pass his way, wondering if he would ever even get to see the village he was born in.
The people of Konoha had welcomed him with open arms after the dust had settled. They were happy to have him call their village home, and with Sasuke by his side, he was happier than Kakashi had ever seen him.
Which was saying a lot for the kid who always smiled.
“You’re thinking hard,” A stick of Dango suddenly appeared in front of his face suddenly. “Want to talk about it?”
Examining the sweet treat he was being presented with, Kakashi took it from Gai and waited for him to roll his wheelchair to the other side of the table and settle in. “I was just thinking...what do we do next?”
Ever since they had left the village as kids, he had thought that was it. They’d made their choice and there was no turning back. No matter how much they may have missed their old home and the friends they had made there, they couldn’t go back. They were rogue shinobi.
Now their future wasn’t so black and white.
Tsunade-sama had removed their names from the bingo book, and their friends had invited them back in with open arms. If they really wanted to, they could retire in Konoha. Spend the rest of their lives in the village they thought they’d never be able to step foot inside of again.
“Well,” Holding his stick of Dango up in front of his face, Gai gave Kakashi his signature brilliant smile. “I certainly wouldn’t turn down easy access to my favorite Dango shop.”
Chuckling, Kakashi watched as Gai sank his teeth into the bright pink ball of Dango and pulled it off of the stick, enjoying the sweet taste of his favorite treat for the first time in years. Not that they hadn’t been able to get Dango from other places. Gai had just always had a soft spot for this little shop in particular, and he made that known every time they got Dango from somewhere else by complaining about how it just ‘wasn’t the same.
“Meh, I can see that,” Kakashi smiled fondly. “Still, we’re retired now. We should enjoy ourselves. Do something more...interesting.”
Narrowing his eyes, Gai swallowed the treat in one giant gulp. A mistake, judging by the pained look on his face when he started struggling for breath. It didn’t take him long to clear his throat and get the rest of his treat down, though, allowing him to focus his attention on Kakashi once more.
“I thought Tsunade-sama wanted you-”
“Did you really think I was going to take the job, Turtle?” It was hilarious that anyone thought he would take the role of Hokage. Even when Tsunade-sama had tried to convince him that the villagers would follow him. That he had proved himself a capable and strong leader during the war, he still turned down the job.
To be Hokage was Obito and Naruto’s dream. They were the ones who had hopes of changing the shinobi world and making it better, not him. All he wanted to do was relax finally. Enjoy a world in which he didn’t have to fight for his life any longer.
“So you actually managed to turn her down?” Leaning back in his wheelchair, Gai chuckled fondly. “I didn’t think you’d manage to do it. As much as you hate the job, you’re the perfect candidate for it.”
“Well, she’ll just have to find someone else.” tucking a finger under the top of his mask, he pulled the fabric down for just long enough to pop the first ball of Dango into his mouth. Once it was off of the stick, his mask moved back into place.
“I see,” Gai’s eyes softened. “In that case, we could go traveling.”
Traveling?
Swallowing the remains of his Dango, Kakashi tilted his head. They had talked about traveling throughout the years. All of the places they would visit if they didn’t have to worry about being attacked.
Things that they wished they had the chance to see.
“Mmm, but where would we go?” He asked. “And how long would we go for?”
Where would they return home to? They had no home in Konoha yet, and the little house they did have in the land of earth was so far away from everything.
“Kakashi,” focusing his attention back on Gai, he watched as he leaned forward, set his Dango down on the table, and placed his hands between them with his palms facing up. An invitation and one Kakashi was more than happy to take. Settling his own stick of Dango off to the side, he placed his hands in Gai’s, he smiled when calloused, worn fingers closed around them. “Does it really matter right now? We raised a kid by ourselves and he turned out alright.”
‘Alright’ was certainly an interesting way to describe the bundle of energy and unrestrained sunshine personality that was Naruto.
“We also survived a war. Two of them in fact.” it had been a close call, but they had both made it out alive against all odds.
“Exactly,” Gai’s laughter filled the small shop, bright and beautiful. “We deserve to travel don’t you think? Enjoy ourselves a little?”
It sounded like a dream come true. No more war, no more running. Just the two of them relaxing and enjoying their lives together. Something Kakashi had never thought he would live to see when he was younger, but now sitting here with Gai across the table from him he couldn’t imagine their lives playing out any other way.
“We could start here,” he offered, a little unsure of his own words. “There’s a lot of places we haven’t seen in a while. And when we’re done exploring Konoha-”
“Then maybe we could go on a trip,” Gai interrupted him. “Explore some of the places that we went to growing up,” There were a lot of places for them to revisit. No doubt it would take some time before they ran out of things to do, and by that point, they may finally know where they wanted to settle.
If they wanted to settle at all.
“Do you remember the place where we first fought?” A fond smile tugged at Gai’s lips. “If I recall, that was-”

Remember When
AU: None/Cannon
Words: 1329
Rating: General
Characters: Hatake Kakashi, Tenzo|Yamato and Maito Gai
Warnings: None
Summary: In the middle of recovering from the Kazekage Rescue mission, Kakashi finds himself being visited by his two best friends, and reliving some memories that he’d much rather forget.
Chakra exhaustion was never a fun thing to deal with. The constant desire to just pass out in his spot, the struggle to do some of the simplest tasks because his body refused to cooperate with him.
If he could go the rest of his life without having to deal with Chakra exhaustion ever again, he’d be a happy man. Thankfully, he was never left alone to suffer at times like this.
“Neji and Lee dispatched the enemies with ease,” Gai proclaimed, throwing his hands up into the air as he spoke. “And when it seemed like they were going to be struck by an enemy in hiding, Tenten swooped in and used their body as a pin cushion for her weapons.”
Gruesome, but effective.
“It sounds to me like your team wasn’t slowed down at all by the Kazekage rescue mission,” he wished the same could be said for Team Kakashi, but he wasn’t leading them at the moment and he hadn’t even met the new addition to their team, Sai. “You sure you shouldn’t take a break?”
“Not all of us are in need of recovery, Rival,” he was trying to be nice, and here Gai was throwing insults back at him. Some days he wondered why he was friends with this man at all. “Though I have no doubt that you’ll be back on missions with your own team soon enough.”
“Well, let’s hope we get a little time to rest as a team-first,” there were still so many things he had to teach Sakura and Naruto, and there was no doubt in his mind that there would need to be a few more lessons on teamwork with the new member. He just hoped in his absence that Tenzo was doing alright. Naruto and Sakura could be quite the handful at times. “I was hoping to see if there were any areas we could still improve on. It has been a while since I taught them, and we didn’t get much time together to train before that mission.”
Perhaps he could finally start teaching Sakura about tactical planning, and if he had enough time before they got their next mission he could teach Naruto how to actually listen to a plan and follow through with it.
Though he didn’t hold out much hope for that second one.
“Anyways, They’re in good hands right now. Tenzo will-”
The door to his room slammed open suddenly, the look of an angry, stressed, completely done Jonin Captain greeting him. Eyes staring directly into his soul as the man stomped towards him looking like he was about to explode.
Somehow, he was not surprised.
Closing his eyes, he gave Tenzo his best smile and tried not to laugh at the whole situation.
“I take it the mission took an unexpected turn?” He’d have to read the mission report later if Tsunade-Sama allowed. “Did you get any good information?”
“Information?” Tenzo’s voice was strained when he spoke. Never a good sign, in Kakashi’s experience. “What information was I supposed to get while Naruto was busy turning into the four tails!? Or Sakura was rushing head first into a suicide attempt!? Or Sai was busy betraying the team for Danzo!?”
That was...a lot to unpack.
More than usual, somehow.
Raising his hands up in a calming gesture, he chuckled weakly. “Now, to be fair. Whatever Sai did is not my fault. I haven’t even met him yet. Not to mention the fact that I just got Naruto and Sakura back on my time. Who knows what Jiraiya-Sama and Tsunade-sama have been teaching them.”
Judging by the way Tenzo’s shoulders squared up, and the way his eyes narrowed in on Kakashi, he wasn’t about to let him off of the hook easily.
“They’re still your problem, Senpai!” He cringed at the use of the honorary. Not that he wasn’t used to it, but he still didn’t really like hearing it. Especially when Tenzo was mad at him. “If you hadn’t gone and exhausted your chakra on the last mission-“
“Oh, sorry,” rolling his eyes, he turned his attention over to Gai. “You hear this? I’m not supposed to fight the enemy now.”
“Well,” Gai reached up to rub the back of his neck, avoiding eye contact with Kakashi as he did so. “He’s not really wrong. You do have a bad habit of over-extending yourself.”
“What was that Mr. ‘I’m going to use the seventh gate to finish this fight quickly even though I only actually need the fifth to defeat this enemy?”
“Are you ever going to let me live that down?” placing his hands on his hips, Gai glared down at Kakashi. “It was one time! You have a whole list of missions that you went and overextended yourself on. Didn’t you even get chakra exhaustion during your first mission out of the village with team seven?”
Now that one was a low blow.
“It’s not like I was facing a bunch of chunin level shinobi. Those would have been easy to deal with,” crossing his arms over his chest he turned his eyes away from the other two and leaned back against the bed. “Beside's, it’s not as bad as the time that Tenzo-”
“Don’t you dare,” Tenzo cut him off, a look that screamed ‘murder’ on his face when Kakashi dared to look at him? “That was one mission, and I came back home fine.”
‘Fine’. Is that what people called it when they had to be dragged back home unconscious by their teammates with two broken bones, a concussion, and a sword-sized hole in their chest?
If he came back home from a mission looking the way Tenzo had that day, he would never hear the end of it, and he didn’t see why Tenzo would expect any different. Being a shinobi may come with a certain level of injury on missions, but that didn’t mean they didn’t have to live the rest of their lives being reminded of all the worst injuries they had received in battle.
It was like a game. Compare the dumb injuries.
Sure, Kakashi was losing. But at least he had a list of his own to use against the other two. Though, now that he thought of it, he couldn’t help but laugh looking at the two men in front of him.
His best friends.
The only two who had come to visit him while he was in the hospital, even after all these years and the many missions he had returned from with chakra exhaustion.
“What’s with that dorky smile all of a sudden, Senpai?”
“Oh, you know,” He smiled at the pair. “Just thinking about how lucky I am.”
Sure, he might end up in the hospital a lot, but at least he knew he’d never have to be alone during his recovery. At some point, Tenzo and Gai would show up to keep him company.
“Here,” picking up one of the many sticks of Dango that Gai had brought for him, Kakashi held it out towards Tenzo. “I don’t have any Ramen for you, but I can at least offer my favourite kitty cat some Dango.”
Tenzo’s eyes widened at the use of that old nickname. An impressive sight to see, considering they already took up half his face before.
“Senpai!”
“Rival, you never told me you had embarrassing nicknames for your other friends!” Gai jumped up from his spot, sending his now empty bowl crashing down onto the floor. “I’m not the only one!”
Seeing Tenzo being pulled into a crushing hug by Gai was worth everything he had dealt with up until this point. Naruto’s hard-headedness, almost getting attacked by an old woman, the whole fight against Deidara, and the chakra exhaustion.
He’d gladly go through it all over again, just for the chance to hear Yamato complain as he was picked up in those giant arms and crushed under the sheer power of Gai’s hug.

Coffee and Complaining Make a Wonderful Pair
AU: Collage Professors AU
Words: 1496
Rating: General
Pairings: Hatake Kakashi/ Ibiki
Warnings: None
Summary: Kakashi had agreed to a coffee date dedicated to marking the last few essays he has left for last, but when he gets there he can’t help but want to do anything else.
For: @konoha-interrogation
The smell of coffee wafted through the air, filling Kakashi’s nostrils and making his mouth water. He couldn’t wait to get his hands onto a nice cup of coffee after a long day of teaching. It’s what he deserved, and something he desperately needed if he wanted to get any work done on all of the essays that he had to mark today.
Scanning his eyes over the small coffee shop, he pinpointed the perfect table and moved to claim it before anyone else could. Tucked away in the far right corner of the room, it was a perfect place to get some quiet. Something Ibiki and him would need to get some work done on all of the essays they had brought with them.
With his table claimed, he flipped his messenger bag open and carefully pulled out the small stack of essays that he had to finish. Only seven left to do, but there was no doubt they would take him a while.
He always saved the worst essays for last. The ones that gave him a headache one paragraph in, or that he knew would be a pain to mark because of the name in the top left corner.
“Coffe delivery,” hearing Ibiki’s voice, he turned to look at the other man. A small smile pulling at his lips when he saw him holding out a large cup of coffee towards him. “Two shots of espresso, just as you asked.”
A judgemental look sits on Ibiki’s face, eyes levelled on Kakashi waiting for him to take the cup from him.
“It’s not like I drink coffee all the time,” he argued, reaching out to take the cup. “Two shots of espresso isn’t going to kill me. Especially when I have to mark essays. If anything it’ll help me survive.”
“If you say so,” the judgment didn’t leave Ibiki’s face even as he took his seat. “So long as you’re not high wired for dinner.”
“Me? High wired?” Kakashi threw a hand over his heart, insulted by Ibiki’s suggestion. “Never. I’m the definition of cool and calm. No amount of caffeine can change that.’
“Right,” setting his drink down on the table, Ibiki sat down in the chair opposite Kakashi and pulled out his essays. A much bigger pile than the one Kakashi had. “Two hours of marking papers and then dinner, deal?”
Two hours? What was this, a torture session?
“No complaining,” Ibiki glared at him. “You’re the one who refuses to work on your essays when you’re at your place, and I want a nice relaxing night without hearing you complain about the last few essays you keep putting off.”
Could he be blamed for putting them off though? Even Ibiki wouldn’t be able to sit there and force himself to read the most ridiculous conclusions that any student had managed to pull out of their ass just so that they could finish an essay worth twenty percent of their final grade.
It was insulting. He had spent so much time in school learning about the history of Japan. Becoming an expert in his field, and putting out research papers every five years that delved deeper into his studies, and this was his reward?
Having to read all the ways that Naruto could butcher history in one essay? Or all the different theories that Sasuke could come up with for why things worked out the way they did when that wasn’t the focus of the paper at all?
“Hey,” Ibiki tapped a pen against the table, an unimpressed look on his face when Kakashi focused his attention back on him. “The longer you stale, the later we have to wait till dinner. The timer doesn’t start till you sit down and there’s an essay in front of you.”
Two hours and Ibiki was going to time it? That was just rude.
Falling back into his chair, Kakashi glared down at the pile of essays that had been sitting in his bag for a week unfinished. The only reason he still hadn’t handed everyone’s essays back even though he had promised it to them two days ago.
Unfortunately, the essays wouldn’t mark themselves and Ibiki had his serious face on. There was no doubt in his mind that dinner would be skipped completely if he refused to do any work on his essays, and that just wasn’t a risk he was willing to take.
“Fine,” picking up the first essay, he read the name on the top left corner and groaned. Naruto, just his luck. “At least I’m doing the worst one first.”
“See, there’s a bright side to everything,” setting his phone on the table, Ibiki made sure Kakashi was watching before hitting the start button on his timer. “Now focus.”
Kakashi huffed. Focus, when the university’s most handsome teacher was sitting across from him with that adorable scrunched-up look of pure concentration on his face. Impossible.
Dragging his eyes away from the handsome man, Kakashi set Naruto’s paper down on the table and started to read through it. Something he instantly regretted when he was forced to process the words ‘Samurai were cool warriors who dedicated their lives to protecting the lord of their land’.
Not wrong, but not in any way coherent or scholarly.
“Why did he take my class,” slapping his hands over his face, he groaned. “Why? There are things he’s good at. Why did he choose my class of all the things he could have taken?”
“History is easy,” spreading his fingers open, Kakashi glared at Ibiki from between them. “I mean, that’s what everyone says. A lot of kids take history because they’re always told that it’s easy. That it won’t take a lot of effort to pass.”
“Is that what you’re kids are saying?” dropping his hand to the table, he leaned forward and poked the top of the essay Ibiki was currently marking. “Oh, let me guess, Kaiyo. She’s always causing havoc for me and she’s not even one of my students. She probably spends your entire class telling people how simple history is, but she wouldn’t last five seconds in my class.’
“You failing her because she walked into your class doesn’t count for her not passing your class,” Ibiki shot back, his eyes not moving up from the essay. “Shouldn’t you be marking?”
“You just called history easy,” Leaning back in his chair, Kakashi crossed his arms over his chest and huffed. “How am I supposed to mark essays when my boyfriend thinks that the subject that I teach is easy? Do you think it’s not difficult for me to do the work that I do?”
“Kakashi,” Setting his pen down, Ibiki picked up his cup and took a quick sip. “I have seen you write a ten-page research paper in one night because you got inspiration, and when you sent it to your editor they had a maximum of two suggestions to make. They thought you had been working on it for weeks because of how detailed it was.”
That wasn’t wrong, but it didn’t mean that history was an easy subject. Kakashi was just an exception. Everything was an easy subject for him.
“Essays,” Ibiki tapped on the paper in front of him. “We can discuss the simplicity of your subject over dinner.”
Simplicity?
“If anyone’s subject is easy, it’s yours,” he huffed, grabbing the essay off of the table and slouching back into his chair. “How does the human brain work? Look at history and mythology and you’ll answer all of your questions.”
He could feel Ibiki glaring at him from behind the essay, and he didn’t dare look at him. It was no doubt one of those glares that could kill on sight, and he still had a dinner to get to.
Instead, he stretched out a foot under the table and gently knocked it against Ibiki’s. A silent plea for a truce, and a promise to keep his attention on the work he was supposed to be doing. No matter how much it hurt his brain to read Naruto’s essays.
“You’re lucky you’re adorable,” Ibiki grumbled under his breath as he turned his attention back to his work. “I can practically feel you smiling. Stop it.”
How could he though? His boyfriend had just called him adorable, and that was the best thing he had ever heard.
He couldn’t wait to show Ibiki just how ‘adorable’ he could be when they were at dinner. Maybe while they were waiting for the main course he’d be nice and…
“Work,” Ibiki cut off his less appropriate thoughts suddenly, a small smile tugging at the right corner of his lips when Kakashi finally lowered the essay to look at him. “We can worry about dinner and...other things, later.”
Something to look forward to.
Maybe he’d get some work done after all. How could he not, when he had such pleasant things to look forward to when he was done.

Time To Move On
AU: Canon Divergent
Words: 1435
Rating: Teen
Characters: Senju Tsunade, Orochimaru, Jiraiya
Warnings: None
Summary: Tsunade decides to leave the village after suffering enough lose to break even the strongest shinobi, but this time she chooses not to go alone.
Done with help from @thegodsaregay
For @sakura-rpblog
Death and loss. That’s the shinobi way of life.
The thing that her Sensei never told her, or any other adult in her life for that matter. The part that everyone failed to mention while she was training to become a medical ninja.
Not everyone can be saved.
Dan and Nawaki were just the latest in a lifetime of loss, and she was tired. So very tired. Every time she looked at her hands all she could see was blood. Their blood, dripping from her fingers. A constant reminder of her failure to save them.
“I can’t do it anymore,” her voice was weak when she finally spoke, sitting at a table in front of her old teammates. Asking them to meet her might not have been the best idea she had, but it was something she knew she needed to do. They were the only family that she had left. If she was going to leave, they deserved to know. “I can’t… I don’t want to have to bury anyone else.”
Just thinking about it broke her heart.
Who was going to be next? Orochimaru? Jiraiya? Whose blood would she be wearing?
“You don’t think it will be that easy, do you?” Orochimaru spoke up, their attention bd or used on pouring themselves another cup of tea. “You can’t just leave the village. Sensei will send someone after you. As long as you’re a shinobi of Konoha…”
Slamming her hands down on the table, Tsunade lowered her eyes. Unable to meet her teammate’s gaze as she formed a response in her mind.
Something that would help them understand.
“Well, if we leave together it’s different,” Jiraiya’s comment caught her off guard. Of all the people to agree with her, she had thought Jiraiya would be the last. He was the one with the fondest memories in Konoha. The least amount of hurt that tied back to their village. “What’s Sensei going to do? Send the whole village after us? The only people who stand a chance of beating us in a fight are Sensei and Sakumo.”
It was true, and neither of them was likely to take up a mission to drag the three of them back to the village. Their Sensei couldn’t just up and leave the village on a whim, he was the Hokage.
As for Sakumo, well Tsunade was pretty sure this was one mission he wasn’t going to take. The risk to his own life when he had a son to take care of wasn’t worth it. Not when they weren’t posing a threat to Konoha.
They were just leaving.
“Even if we do leave, what are we supposed to do?” Orochimaru continued to argue. “We’re shinobi. Our purpose is to fight. If we’re not doing that…”
“Then we live,” Tsunade spoke softly, her eyes focused on the cup of tea in front of her. “We stop hurting. Is that so bad? To want a life without the constant missions. Without…”
Silence fell between them. Stiff and uncomfortable, lingering in the air while they contemplated what to do next. What path they wanted to take.
“You don’t have to come with us,” she offered, wanting to give Orochimaru the escape that they seemed to be arguing for. “If this is the life you want, who am I to tell you no? I just thought…”
Maybe she wouldn’t have to lose them.
If they were with her, safe and protected, she wouldn’t have to hear of their deaths one day. Wouldn’t be forced to return back home just to bury her old friends.
“Well, if I don’t come along then you’re left to deal with Jiraiya on your own,” She couldn’t tell if Orochimaru was just messing with her, but when she looked their way she was greeted with a soft smile. A rare sight when it came to them. “And as entertaining as it might be to hear tales of how you’ve beaten him into the ground in every village for his perverted ways…”
“Hey!” Jiraiya slammed his hands down on the table and stood to face Orochimaru. “Stop making it sound like I’m uncontrollable!”
“The only thing controlled about you is your hair,” Orochimaru shot back. “And some days even that’s questionable.”
Watching as the two of them got into one of their regular arguments, Tsunade couldn’t help but smile for the first time since Nawaki’s death. A small enough smile that she could easily hide it by picking up her cup and pretending to take a sip.
For the first time in days, she felt like there might be hope.
Like just maybe she didn’t have to keep hurting.
Having Orochimaru and Jiraiya by her side wouldn’t bring Dan and Nawaki back, and that pain would always stay with her. The emptiness by her side where her love and little brother belonged.
“Hey,” feeling a finger pressing against her forehead, Tsunade glared back at Jiraiya. “If we’re going to do this, we need a plan.”
“A plan?”
“Well, ya,” Leaning back in his seat, he gave her a playful smile. “Like, where do we want to go? Are we just going to travel around and see what happens or do we have a plan? And what do each of us even want to do with the freedom granted to us if we’re no longer doing missions for the village?”
She hadn’t thought that far. The fact that the two of them seemed to be agreeing to go with her at all was more than she had expected coming into this conversation. Now she had to come up with something for them to do.
“Well, we could always gamble,” Dan would laugh if he heard her now. A bright, happy laugh that she could practically hear ringing in her ear. “Life can’t fuck me over any more than it already has.”
“You should know better than to say something like that, Tsunade,” Laying their head on top of their hand, Orochimaru leveled her with an unimpressed look. “Your luck is so horrendous that the world might take that as a personal challenge and prove you wrong.”
“Just what we need to start our new lives out of Konoha. Some Tsunade grade luck,” Jiraiya laughed loud and proud, grunting when Orochimaru elbowed him in the side. “Oww.”
Ignoring Jiraiya’s poor choice of jokes, Tsunade gave some serious thought to his previous question. There were a lot of things that the three of them could do, but only a small list formed in her mind of things they would actually enjoy doing.
“Let’s go on a tour of villages,” she decided. “See some festivals. Experience some of the things we never had time for growing up because of training and missions.”
It was easy to imagine. Orochimaru trying out all the different festival foods that they could get their hands on, with the weirder ones being their favorites. Jiraiya flirting with all of the pretty girls he spotted until Tsunade punched him, and then focusing his attention on some of the festival games.
The three of them sitting on a rooftop, watching fireworks and shows. Just being able to enjoy themselves for once in their lives.
“I want to find scrolls that aren’t here in Konoha,’ Orochimaru spoke up. “New things to add to the knowledge I already have. Jutsu's, history, experiments. Whatever I can get my hands on.”
“Well,” stretching his arms up over his head, Jiraiya gave Tsunade a playful wink. “As long as we stop at some hot springs along the way and I get to see pretty girls, I don’t care much about what we do. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get some inspiration for that book I've been wanting to write.”
The shinobi’s way of life was nothing but missions, loss, and pain. An endless, ruthless cycle.
But here, sitting across from her teammates talking about the future that they could have, the life that they wanted to shape for themselves, Tsunade realized it didn’t have to be the life she lived any longer.
She was allowed to escape.
To run away from the system that kept taking everything she loved away from her and expecting her to move on as if nothing had happened.
She had already given up so much in her life. More than she could ever have imagined. It was time for the world to give her a break. To let her relax and breathe, and if she had to fight all of Konoha to get it, she would.
With her teammates by her side, there was no way she would lose.

Secret Hideaway
AU: Pokemon Au
Words: 1968
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/Umino Iruka
Summary: During a day off together, Iruka decided to show Kakashi an interesting place he found on his last adventure in Viridian forest.
Viridian forest, one of the first places that any new trainer would find themselves in. Full of all different kinds of bug pokemon, and trainers waiting to test out their strength and prove themselves to anyone they ran into.
Also one of the quietest places to get away to if someone just wanted an escape from the city. Which was always a bonus for Kakashi, who lived right beside the forest and was always looking for an excuse to get away from the Viridian city gym for a little while. The only thing that made these little visits to the forest better, was when Iruka was able to get away from the Pewter city gym to join him.
That was, of course, a bonus of living so close to one’s boyfriend. Even if they were in different cities, it wasn’t hard for them to meet up for even just a day in the forest. To take a walk together with the trees overhead and the sound of bug pokemon scurrying through the grass all around them.
Today had been one of those special days. Something they had been planning all week as a treat for surviving another year of constant challengers coming through their doors before the Pokemon league, and for Kakashi not making anyone cry for an entire week.
Now here they were, walking side by side through the forest. Enjoying each other’s company and already talking about the lunch that Kakashi had packed away in a picnic basket for them.
Directly in front of them, Jolteon and Persian led the way to the spot that Iruka had picked out for them this afternoon. A surprise that he had promised Kakashi he would love, having gone to look at it himself during a training day that he had decided to spend in the forest.
“So, you just stumbled upon this place?” Kakashi asked, a little skeptical of the story that Iruka had given him. “Just tripped over a rock and came crashing down into it?”
“That’s not, shut up,” shoving Kakashi in the shoulder, Iruka turned his eyes up towards the sky. “If you’re going to be like that, we don’t have to go. I can just keep the secret to myself.”
“It’s not that. I’m just surprised that there’s a place in the forest I haven’t been to,” digging a treat out of his pocket, Kakashi threw it towards Jolteon and watched as he jumped up into the air to catch it in her teeth. “Though, I will admit I haven’t done that much exploring in the forest.” It was pretty difficult to get time away from the gym, and when he did he usually had other things to do. Trips to make to see his other friends, training to take care of, and errands around the city that needed his attention.
“Exactly,” a blinding smile greeted him when he glanced over at Iruka. “You’re not the most adventurous person. Surely there are lots of things in this forest you haven’t seen yet.”
“It wouldn’t be surprising.” Really, when Kakashi was in the forest most of the time he stuck to the path. Only going into the bushes to train for a bit, or to help an injured pokemon that he saw. Straying off of the path wasn’t something that he made a habit out of, which limited just how much of the forest he actually saw. There was no doubt in his mind that Iruka had taken the time to actually explore the places Kakashi didn’t bother to go into. He was adventurous like that. Always talking about seeing every inch of Kanto that there was, while Kakashi preferred to stick to familiar paths.
He had enough troubles during his journeys as a kid, following Gai off of the path into all sorts of danger.
“It’s a beautiful spot. With a nice little pond and lots of trees around every inch of it. The perfect hiding spot away from other people,” quirking an eyebrow, Kakashi waited for Iruka to continue. “There’s also a story about it. At least, I think it’s about that spot. I tried to look it up at the Pewter city library when I got home, but there wasn’t much information other than a small fable. The description of the spot it was talking about was similar to the one I’m taking you to today, though. So I think it’s the same place.”
That sounded oddly terrifying.
“Are you sure this isn’t one of those special hide-aways that humans aren’t supposed to go to?” there were a few of those around the world. Special places that didn’t appear for humans, or that could only be seen if a human accidentally stumbled upon them. Safe spaces for pokemon to get away from humans.
“The fable says it’s just well hidden,” Iruka clarified. “I mean, it might be. But the story surrounding it includes Humans, so i think we’re welcome there. At least, a few of us are.”
Glancing towards their Pokémon, Kakashi watched as Jolteon stopped beside the bushes to look back at him, allowing Persian to go ahead of her while she waited for the go ahead.
Iruka wasn’t one to put him in a dangerous situation, always yelling at Kakashi for taking a Pokémon’s attack head on in training, or being too reckless during morning runs with his Pokémon and injuring himself. So there was no doubt in his mind that the place was safe.
Still, he felt like he didn’t have all of the necessary information. Like Iruka was holding something back from him.
“What is this fable?” He asked, waving Jolteon ahead and watching as she dashed after Persian while him and Iruka followed. “You keep mentioning it, but you haven’t actually told me anything about it yet.”
A look crossed over Iruka’s face that Kakashi couldn’t quite place. A weird mixture of fondness and horror that he was certain he had never seen before. “Well, it’s a rather interesting story,” he started. “It’s said that for those human’s that find their way to the spot, they can bring someone they care deeply about. Someone that they L-L…”
Even after all this time, Iruka sometimes found it difficult to say that word. It was actually a little cute. Usually Iruka was the first to admit his feelings freely, unafraid to let everyone around him know what was on his mind. When it came to Kakashi, though, he seemed a lot more timid.
As if he was afraid that those feelings wouldn’t be returned, no matter how many times Kakashi assured him that they were.
“So, you decided to bring me?” he teased, allowing Iruka an escape from having to say that word out loud for now. “Is this your new way of saying that you love me, Iruka? Taking me to cute places where you’re supposed to have a nice date?”
“It’s more than that,” grabbing hold of a hanging tree branch, Iruka moved it out of his way and stepped past it. Taking the lead as the area around them became more restrictive of space. “It’s said that if you take someone that you...well, Love,” he finally choked out the word. “Then it’s your chance to declare your desire for them. There’s a part of the fable that talks about watching the sunset together, and states that when the sun sinks down over the horizon a special pokemon may make itself seen. It doesn’t say what the pokemon is, just that it’s legendary.”
A legendary pokemon was always a nice thing to see. Perhaps if they were lucky, it would be Zapdos. Kakashi always loved a chance to see his favorite legendary bird.
“If the lucky couple sees that pokemon, and they share a...well, ummm…”
This time when Iruka started to cut himself off, Kakashi couldn’t help but feel it was for another reason. Less to do with his own embarrassment, and more to do with Kakashi’s own comfort.
They had talked about many things when they first started dating, the most important conversation being about the things that they were and were not comfortable with. For Kakashi, one of those things involved Kissing.
It had been hard to explain, and he had been so afraid Iruka would dump him when he found out. Decide that he wanted nothing to do with Kakashi when he couldn’t even do some of the things that other couples did together, but he had been so understanding and sweet.
Promised Kakashi that it wasn’t a requirement, and that the things they could do together would simply be more cherished by him because of how important they were. Of course, that didn’t mean Iruka didn’t miss it.
“And what happens if they do that, hmm?” He interrupted. “Surely there’s a reward for such a bold move.”
“Well, ummm,” Placing a hand against the back of his head, Iruka chuckled awkwardly. “It’s said that if they do...well, it means that they’ll spend the rest of their lives together.” Embarrassment gave way to excitement. A gleam of hope sparkling in Iruka’s eyes when he glanced back at Kakashi.
The rest of their lives.
Kakashi couldn’t help but admit that it did sound nice. Knowing that he would be with Iruka forever, happy and loved. It was the stuff of dreams, at least for him.
“You know,” Watching as Persian and Jolteon disappeared through a bunch of trees and bushes directly in front of them, Kakashi reached out and took hold of Iruka’s hand. “You already have forever with me, if that’s what you want. I’m not going anywhere.”
Iruka’s eyes widened.
“I-are you…” averting his gaze, he squeezed Kakashi’s hand lightly. “I mean, you don’t have to make that promise. We don’t know what the future holds and…”
Using the grip he had on Iruka’s hand, Kakashi pulled the other man close to his body and draped his free arm around his neck. A soft hug, his way of telling Iruka to stop talking.
“I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” he clarified, tangling his fingers between Iruka’s and holding their joined hands up in front of them. “You’re amazing. Sweet, thoughtful, dedicated. Always challenging me to be a better person. I can’t imagine my life without you Iruka, and a kiss doesn’t even hope to compare to the feelings that I have for you.”
The feeling of something tugging on his pants pulled him out of his thoughts, and forced him to look down to see Jolteon standing there looking up at him trying desperately to tug him towards the area she had just returned from.
“We should get moving,” Iruka chuckled. “I think Jolteon and Persian have waited for lunch long enough.”
That was true. The pair had been bugging them for food since they started on their journey to this secret spot, and no doubt they were starving now. Desperate to get some food in their bellies.
“Alright,” retracting his hand from Iruka’s he took a step back, smiling when the other man turned to face him. “But don’t forget what I said, got it? I don’t need a fable to tell me who I’m meant to spend the rest of my life with.”
A soft smile tugged at Iruka’s lips.
“Neither do I,” His smile grew when Jolteon stood up on her back legs and pawed at Kakashi’s side. “I mean, our pokemon are in love too, so that means something. Right?”
It took a minute for Kakashi to process what exactly Iruka had just said, but as soon as he did he started to laugh. Loud and bright, ignoring Jolteon’s continued insistence that he get moving so that she could eat.
He really had picked the best out of the bunch with Iruka.

Out There Somewhere
Au: Soulmate AU
Words: 2271
Characters: Hatake Kakashi, Minato
Summary: After a terrible nightmare, Kakashi make's a discovery that could change everything.
One haunted angry eye glares at him, blood spilling from Obito's mouth as he speaks words that never reach his ears. Half of his face is covered by the boulder that crushed him, but Kakashi can still see all of the hatred and anger no problem.
Obito's wrath is clear as day, and even as he shrinks away begging for Obito to leave him alone he knows he deserves this.
That it's his fault Obito ended up like this.
His failure
So when a bloodied hand reaches out to him, grabbing the front of his shirt and pulling him directly into Obito, he doesn't fight.
The only thing that leaves his mouth is an apology as the anger and hatred swallow him whole.
Surging up in his spot, Kakashi's scream echoed in his tiny bedroom. Sweat dripped down his forehead and neck as he scanned the room for any sign of the face that haunted his nightmares.
Nothing.
Where the relief is supposed to wash over him, he instead feels a dull ache in his chest. A reminder of the emptiness that lingered in his heart since Obito's death.
'Soulmates are someone who we share a part of our soul with'
That's how his father had explained it to him when he noticed the first mark on his body. A small owl perched on top of his shoulder in bright blue colours.
The sign of a platonic soulmate according to his father.
Growing up, Kakashi had never put much weight into those little pictures that littered his body, but after Obito's death, he had come to understand just why his father looked so sad when he explained soulmates to Kakashi. It wasn’t just knowing that he’d look at his body and see the brilliant blue colours had faded to a black, but the empty feeling deep inside of his soul.
And the worst of all was that it was all because of his failures as a leader.
It was because of him that Obito was gone. A fact that he had to live with that was imprinted on his skin for the rest of his life. Which was why he had avoided looking at himself in the mirror since his return.
Avoided seeing that brilliant blue owl sitting there, now a dull black. Lifeless and empty.
“Obito…” placing a hand over his left eye, he stared into the emptiness of his bedroom and struggled to calm his nerves. To at least be able to relax his shoulders and get rid of that crushing feeling in his chest. The one that felt like his ribs were collapsing in on his lungs, crushing them under the intense weight and making it difficult for him to breathe. “I-”
His hand dropped to his side.
“Would you even hear me?” he asked, wishing that there was a ghost hovering somewhere in the air around him who could answer his questions. “Could you ever forgive me?”
Deep down a part of him tries to speak. To remind him of Obito’s words, and the promise he made to his friend before he was forced to leave him alone in that cave. Crushed under the weight of boulders that should have killed him instead.
He doesn’t hear it though. It’s too quiet in a sea of anger and hurt.
Giving his head a shake, he settled his free hand on top of his knee and pushed himself to his feet. With an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach, he made his way towards the bathroom.
It might be too early for a shower for most people, but there was no doubt in his mind that he’d find it impossible to sleep again until he did something to calm his nerves.
After a long, warm shower, the tight feeling in his chest had eased just a little. Enough that he could finally breathe without feeling like he was being suffocated by his own body.
Though there was still a troubled feeling deep in his gut. As if he was missing something important that was right in front of his face.
Pushing aside those thoughts for the moment, he stepped out of the shower and grabbed a towel off of the back of the washroom door.
Stepping out of the shower, he grabbed his towel off of the back of the bathroom door and quickly dried off his body. Once he was sure there were no stray droplets on his legs are arms, he turned his attention to his hair.
A far more daunting task. Since the thick silver strands loved to cling to water for hours, leaving him with few options at his disposal. The best choice was usually to let his hair air dry, which was easy to do when he had to run off to training early in the morning.
But with a glance at the clock to confirm that it was only three in the morning, he decided for the less enjoyable route of wrapping the towel around his hair and leaving it like that for the next hour or two.
Once the towel was in place, he turned to leave the room, except as his eyes glanced over the mirror he couldn't help but notice the soulmate mark on his shoulder.
The one he had been trying so hard to avoid for weeks since Obito's death. Refusing to allow himself to see the truth of the situation.
Scared of the blacked-out owl waiting for him to notice it.
Except, when he noticed the mark in that passing glance it wasn't black.
"Ignore it," he muttered to himself. "It was a mistake. It couldn't be…"
But what if it is?
The question tugged at his heart, demanding an answer no matter how much it might hurt.
What if…
His eyes scanned back towards the mirror, stopping just at the edge and sitting there. Refusing to move, no matter which direction Kakashi tried to look. Denying him the safety of refusing to seek out the answer and refusing to give him the satisfaction of an answer. No matter how heartbreaking that answer may be.
“You can do this, Kakashi,” giving himself a moment, he focused his attention on his breathing.
In
Out
In
Out
In
Once it no longer felt like his heart was about to jump out of his chest, he focused his attention on the mirror. The shape of his eyes were the first thing he noticed. That familiar sunken look that many people often mistook for a bored expression, rather than just the way his eyes were.
When he got sick of looking at his eyes, he moved downwards to the mole on the right side of his chin. A secret that few in Konoha knew about, and one of the few things he recalls being attributed to his mother growing up. While everyone loved to talk about how much he looked like his father, even after the white fangs fall from grace, the memories of that laughter in his father’s voice whenever he would poke his mole and talk about how he got that from his mother never faded. A sweet memory that his mind refused to give up, even when he had tried so hard to forget about his father.
Finally, he dragged his eyes down to his shoulder. To that spot that was always covered by his shirt, and that he had avoided looking at since Obito’s death.
The soulmate mark.
Still, the same brilliant blue that it was the last time he saw it. The owl’s eyes sparkling a little under the bathroom’s light. So caught up in the beauty of his soulmate mark, something he had tried for years to ignore, he almost forgot what those brilliant bright colours shining under the light meant.
And then it hit him. The realization smacking him in the face like one of Obito’s punches.
“He’s alive.”
The words burned in his throat. As if his body was trying to tell him that it was a lie. That his eyes were playing a trick on him. No matter how many times he looked at the mark though, it was always the same.
Brilliant blue shining up at him with such vibrant colours that it couldn’t be mistaken for anything else.
Obito was alive. He had to be.
He was alive, and they had left him under all of that rubble. Alone and probably scared out of his mind with the crushing weight of all of those rocks on top of him.
“Someone must have saved him,” his mind raced, searching for any logical explanation to how this was possible. If Obito was alive, there was no way he would still be stuck under that rock. He wouldn’t have access to food or water there and would have withered away during the time Kakashi spent ignoring his soulmate mark.
Just the thought of it made him sick. When Obito needed his attention the most, he ignored him, failing to protect him all over again. It was as if the world wanted him to know just what a terrible friend he was. That he shouldn’t be put in charge of any missions in the future, because all that would come out of it is disaster and death.
“Minato-sensei,” picking himself up, he turned towards the bathroom door and made a swift exit. Determined to get dressed as quickly as possible and out the door. “He’ll know what to do. As soon as I tell him he’ll have a plan. I know it.”
He had to. If his Sensei didn’t know what to do, then Kakashi would be lost. Ever since he was five he had looked to the older man for guidance. He was one of Konoha’s best shinobi for a reason. That meant he had to have an answer when Kakashi didn’t.
Once Kakashi showed him the mark on his shoulder, he’d have a plan to find Obito and rescue him. Kakashi was sure of it.
Can’t just leave for a rescue mission.
We need more information.
It could be wrong. We don’t know everything about Soulmate marks.
Minato-Sensei’s words echoed in his ears, but no matter how hard he tried Kakashi couldn’t make any sense out of them.
“You...but, Obito…” his heart broke at the thought of leaving Obito out there, alone with no one watching out for him. “We have to find Obito, Sensei! He’s out there and we-”
Minato held up a hand to silence him, a look on his face that Kakashi had never seen before. Not of happiness or disappointment, but annoyance. “I’ve heard what you have to say Kakashi, but it’s not as easy as you seem to think. If Obito is alive he’s no longer in the same spot. Finding him will be difficult and-”
“I can use the hounds!” Kakashi insisted. “I’m sure there’s still some of Obito’s scent on his stuff. We packed it all away sure, but something must still smell like him. If we go back to Kanabi bridge we can just have the hounds track him from there.”
His idea was met with a sigh.
“Even if we could go back to the cave, which we can’t, it would have to wait,” his Sensei continued. “Lord Third has a mission for you. One that he needs you to lead.”
A mission? He was expected to lead a mission when Obito was out there alive, waiting for them to find him?
“I thought we weren’t supposed to leave our friends behind,” the words burned in his throat, his mind a war zone of emotions. The reminder of what happened to his father for holding and supporting those same beliefs boiled deep inside of him, but for the first time in years, those weren’t the thoughts that overwhelmed him the most.
For once, he was more concerned about the friend that he had lost.
The person he had spent so much time hating and scolding, that by the time he finally started to think of him as an actual friend he had lost him.
If there was even the smallest chance that he could save Obito, he had to take it.
“It’s not up for discussion, Kakashi,” Minato-sensei cut him off before he could even attempt to argue. “Lord Third is sending you out on your mission tomorrow. I know you’re worried about Obito, but he’s going to have to wait for now. Once the mission is done we can try and figure out a way to find him.”
“Yes, Sensei…”
It broke his heart to think that Obito had to wait. That he wasn’t allowed to grab Rin and search for their teammate, their friend, right away.
They were leaving him out there alone, in who knows what kind of condition, and there was no guarantee that they would even be allowed to go after him even after this mission. For some reason, even with that promise from his sensei’s mouth, it didn’t feel genuine.
There was no doubt in Kakashi’s mouth that if another mission came up, the search for Obito would be pushed back again.
The village always came first after all, even before one’s teammates.
He had learned that years ago, and even with Obito’s voice in his ear reminding him to put his teammates first, he didn’t always get the choice at the end of the day.
If the Hokage and his Sensei told him that he had to take care of the mission first, that’s what he did.
To save himself from ending up on the wrong end of his weapon, just like his father.

Stunning Choice
AU: Pirates Au
Words: 1049
Rating: General
Pairings: Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai/Tenzo|Yamato
Warnings: None
Summary: In the middle of a heist, Kakashi notices that Tenzo’s nowhere to be seen.
“Twelve minutes.”
Gai stood by the window in the master bedroom, eyes focused on the street watching for the owners’ return. Meanwhile, Kakashi and Yamato rummaged through everything that they could find and grabbed whatever looked good.
Jewelry, cash, weapons. Whatever looked expensive and was small enough to fit in their bags. They would sort it all out later on the ship when there wasn’t a time crunch.
Opening the top drawer of the nightstand, Kakashi sifted through everything until he found a knife tucked away in the corner with a navy blue and silver handle and a beautiful sapphire stone right in the middle surrounded by an intricate design of silver leaves.
Not very practical for a fight, but beautiful nonetheless.
“Hey, Tenzo,” turning his head he sought out the other man, frowning when he didn’t spot him anywhere in the room. “What...Gai did you see where Tenzo went?”
“I think he went into the walk-in closet,” Gai’s eyes didn’t leave the window at all as he answered Kakashi’s question. “There’s usually some pretty expensive clothes at places like this, and clothes are easy to carry.”
Fair enough. It made sense that Tenzo would think to check the closet for expensive clothes and accessories. Silks would catch a fair price on the market, and the Daimyo’s wife was bound to have the fanciest shoes and jewelry.
If they found enough stuff to sell, maybe they’d be able to give the whole ship a new paint job and get a new sail so Kakashi could stop wasting time patching it up and relax a little.
Pocketing the knife, Kakashi got to his feet and headed towards the walk-in closet. On the way, he dropped his bag by Gai’s side and grabbed the empty one that Gai was keeping hold of for him.
One bag for each of them. Not too much to carry so that they could make an easy escape.
“Ten minutes.”
Gai’s reminder echoed in his ear as he made his way towards the closet.
Ten minutes to grab everything that they could and get out of there before Daimyo and his wife returned home. They could handle that.
“Hey, Tenzo, I found you a new kn-” stepping into the closet, Kakashi stopped in his tracks when he saw Tenzo standing in the middle of the tight space staring at a beautiful light blue kimono with a stunning purple Obi-age wrapped around the middle. Unlike all of the other clothes, this Kimono was placed in the center of the closet on an easily accessible hanger, with a few others hanging behind it.
This was clearly the place to go for the wife’s favourite fancy outfits.
The entire time he was standing there, Tenzo’s eyes hadn’t left the Kimono. Not to acknowledge Kakashi’s presence, and not even to search the closet for anything worth stealing. They were glued on that one gorgeous Kimono, and Kakashi could sort of understand.
It would look stunning on the right person.
“I don’t suppose you have someone in mind to wear that?” Tenzo drew his sword, ready to take off Kakashi’s head until his Captain grabbed his arm to stop him. “Sorry. Didn’t think you’d mistake me for an enemy.”
Tenzo’s body was stiff, ready for a fight. His eyes searched the area as if he didn’t believe that he wasn’t in danger. He was wound up so tight that Kakashi was convinced he’d snap at any moment.
“Tenzo,” resting a hand on his shoulder, Kakashi gently pulled him back against his body and slid his free arm around his waist. “What’s up? You seem...distracted.”
Nothing was said.
For a moment, the two of them just stood there. Tenzo resting comfortably in Kakashi’s hold, and Kakashi waiting patiently for an answer while examining the Kimono that had caught Tenzo’s attention.
It was one of the most beautiful Kimonos he had ever seen.
“You should wear it,” He spoke without thinking, a smile tugging at his lips when Tenzo turned his head to look at him with wide eyes. “I think you would look good in it. The prettiest pirate in all of Japan. I can see the look on Gai’s face now when he sees you in it-”
“Seven Minutes!” Gai’s voice rang through the air.
With not a lot of time left for them to rob the place, Kakashi made an executive decision. Sliding past his partner, he carefully removed the Kimono from its hanger and stuffed it into the bag he had grabbed from Gai.
“You can try it on when we get back to the ship,” he offered, already sifting through all of the other Kimono’s and picking out a few more for Tenzo to try on. Whichever one’s he didn’t like could be sold at the market, or given to any of the other crew members who wanted them. “Now it’s time to focus, Tenzo. We don’t have much time and there are still so many pretty things to steal.”
Picking out a stunning green Kimono, Kakashi threw it into the bag alongside the other. There were so many beautiful choices, but his mind was still stuck on the one that had caught Tenzo’s attention first.
The knife he had found would go perfectly with it. A beautiful but deadly combination, just like Tenzo. It was perfect.
“Time’s up!”
Hearing the panic in Gai’s voice, Kakashi threw a few pairs of shoes into his bag and grabbed Tenzo’s hand, tugging him out of the walk-in closet and chuckling when he was rewarded with a yelp and an annoyed ‘Kakashi’.
Maybe they hadn’t gotten everything that they could have, but there was no doubt they got what they needed.
` “Let’s get out of here,” coming to a stop beside Gai, he peered out the window to see the Daimyo’s carriage pulling up in front of the house. “Before they find the unconscious guards downstairs.”
“Good plan,” Gai took the bag from his hand and nodded towards the window. “After you, Captain.”
Now they just had to make a safe escape back to the ship and then Tenzo could put on a fashion show for him and Gai. No one else was invited.
They wouldn’t want to be there anyway. Just in case things got a little, heated.

Faded Colour
Au: Iwa Gai Au + Soulmate Au
Words: 2390
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai
Summary: On his way to complete a mission in the land of Earth, Kakashi notices a shift in his vision that could only mean one thing. His soulmate is nearby, and for some reason, he really wants to see the man.
Continuation of: Unexpected Soulmate
The colours that you see now are the window to your soul. The further away from your soulmate you are, the less focused the colours will be.
The closer you are, the sharper more distinctive they are. You'll be able to tell the difference between blue and aqua then.
If your soulmate is injured, the colours will fade.
If they die…
Minato-sensei had never finished explaining it to him. Missions had happened, life became hectic, and before Kakashi really knew what was going on his whole team was gone.
Names on a stone memorial for him to visit every morning.
His Sensei’s words were always on his mind though. A constant reminder of why his vision was changing. Why things seemed a little clearer once in a while, or why his heart would stop when the colours would start to fade.
He had only met his soulmate once, in the heat of battle, and he was already terrified of losing him. It was rather pathetic in his opinion. Fearing for the life of an enemy shinobi. Then of course, he assumed that was what happened with every soulmate.
It didn’t matter if you wanted to be connected to that person. If you were supposed to try and kill each other on sight, or if you never really got to know them. The heart knew who it was connected to, and the mere thought of losing that connection hurt.
“You’re not focused,” glancing towards Tenzo, Kakashi raised an eyebrow when he saw his new teammate staring back at him with a worried expression. “What’s on your mind, Senpai?”
“I told you not to call me that,” turning his attention back on the path in front of him, Kakashi touched down on the next branch and prepared to jump once more when he suddenly saw a shift in his vision. The colours around him getting sharper, with the green of the forest tree’s becoming more prominent and beautiful. “Shit.”
“What is it?” coming to a stop by Kakashi’s side, Tenzo immediately reached out to touch the older boys shoulder.
Trouble. That’s the only word that Kakashi could think of to describe it. If the colours around him were getting clearer that meant that his soulmate was close by. A secret he had managed to keep from everyone, about to be blown all for their mission.
“Stone shinobi,” he informed Tenzo, trying his best to keep his cool. Though he had no idea where the enemy actually was, he did like the amazed look on Tenzo’s face when his words sank in. “They’re nearby. Get ready for a fight.”
Their goal was to get to the land of earth and take out a specific target, so it wasn’t surprising that they were running into stone shinobi on the way. The only annoying part was that he had to be one of them.
The smart thing to do was avoid them. He had no idea how many shinobi there were, and their purpose was to avoid unnecessary fights so that they could achieve their mission.
Regardless of what was smart, his heart screamed at him to find them. To risk a full out fight to see his soulmate for ever just a second. To put his life, and Tenzo’s, on the line for selfish, stupid reason’s.
“We’re going in, arn’t we?” When he looked back over at Tenzo he was met with an unimpressed glare. “You really are out of it.”
It wasn’t a lie, and no doubt Tenzo would have a lecture waiting for him as soon as they were out of danger, but it was worth the risk.
Just this once, he needed to listen to his heart.
To give himself something good, even if it all went terribly wrong.
“Lead the way, Senpai,” closing his eyes, Kakashi focused on the scenes around them. The smell of grass and bark were the most prominent around them, but hidden deep beneath them was the smallest hint of sweat. Following that scent, he turned towards the east. “That way?”
“This way,” he confirmed before jumping towards the next tree. Even with a scent to follow, the information he had was still minimal. They’d have to scope the area before actually approaching, to make sure they weren’t about to jump into a situation that they would find themselves outnumbered in.
As they got closer to their target, Kakashi couldn’t help but notice the sharpness of the colours around him. Where usually the various colours would blend together, he could now tell where exactly the leaves ended and the branch began. When he looked up at the sky above them, he could see the difference between the clouds and the sky.
Things that usually didn’t concern him were impossible not to notice now, largely because of the weird feeling that bloomed inside of his chest when he thought about the reason for all of these changes.
I wonder if he looks the same.
It's a stupid thought of course. The two of them hadn't seen each other in five years. There was no way the other boy still had the same stupid bowl cut, or that he was wearing that same awful green jumpsuit.
Just as Kakashi had grown and changed, he surely had as well.
Coming to a stop after a few minutes, Kakashi peered through the bush line.
"Just one person," Tenzo settled in beside him. "If you really want to pick a fight, that shouldn't be too hard to deal with."
One person.
One single person, with a vibrant green jumpsuit that Kakashi had wished he'd never see again, and that same ridiculous bowl cut.
Five years, and yet it was like nothing had changed at all.
“I don’t think we’ll need to pick a fight,” turning his back, Kakashi prepared himself to move on. Seeing that his soulmate was alive was surely enough. At least now he had some information about his condition, rather than the absolute nothing he had for the past five years. “Let’s continue with our mis-”
Hearing movement directly behind him, Kakashi turned and lifted his arms just in time to block a kick from the man he had been watching just seconds ago.
“You!” Bright black eyes widened with realization.
Shoving him back, Kakashi shifted his feet to face him once again and dived towards the enemy. Usually, he’d pull out his tanto for the attack. Aim to slice deep into his enemies’ skin in hopes of disarming them and forcing them to retreat.
His hand refused to reach for the weapon though or to even produce the Chidori that he was so well known for.
Instead, he found himself wrapping his arms around the man’s waist and attempting to slam him down into the ground, before he could though, he shifted his body so that he landed on his feet and was immediately able to push himself back. Putting distance between the two of them.
“What are you doing here?” turning his body mid-air, Kakashi touched down on the ground. “Don’t tell me you’re spying on me. Did you miss me that much?”
Hearing the taunt out of the other man’s mouth made his skin crawl.
“I’m here for a mission,” he insisted, ignoring the prickling feeling on the back of his neck when the other man narrowed his eyes. Clearly not believing what Kakashi was saying. “What would I even want to do around you? You haven’t grown at all as a shinobi.”
It was a lie of course. His arms were throbbing from the kick he had blocked, and the ease with which he had dodged Kakashi’s attack was a major improvement from the last fight they had.
“Brave words for the one hiding away in the trees. Can’t even come out and face me head-on?”
It took all of Kakashi’s effort not to scream at the man about the importance of stealth for a shinobi. Clearly, it was a lost cause that he need not waste time arguing about if the man was going to take a jab at him doing his job and keeping hidden.
Not that he was doing his job well, obviously, since he had been spotted. Something he would have to work on when he got home.
“Is your friend going to come out or-” holding up a hand, Kakashi kept his eyes focused on the stone shinobi. This was not something that he wanted Tenzo to be a part of. If there was going to be a fight, it was his to have. “I see. Is that how it’s going to go? You’re going to be one of those people? The one who kills their sou-”
“Do not finish that sentence.” There were too many things that could go wrong if Tenzo found out who it was that Kakashi had been so determined to find. The questions would be nothing compared to the judgement he would face if Tenzo told anyone else.
If others in Konoha found out that ‘Friend-killer Kakashi’ had a soulmate, one who was an enemy shinobi, he’d never be trusted again. It would be a lucky day if he was simply shunned like his father, or banished from the village.
There were days where he already felt like an outcast in his own village. He didn’t need to make it worse by actually becoming one.
“Look,” dropping his shoulders, he gave himself a moment to get his emotions back under control. Not that a moment would do much to help him, but the least he could do was not allow them to overwhelm him. “I didn’t come here for a fight. I don’t want to…” he gave his hand a wave as a substitute for the words he didn’t want to say. “I just needed…”
To make sure that you were alive.
Something good in my life.
You.
Stomping down on all of those thoughts, he desperately searched for something that he could say. An excuse for being there that would actually make sense, without giving away the mission that he was there to do.
“Hey…” seeing the other man take a step towards him, Kakashi forced himself not to move back. “Are you-” A hand reached out towards him, stopping half way between them when he flinched away. “Can I?”
Unsure of what the man was trying to ask him, Kakashi looked down at the hand now hovering between them. A hand that looked suspiciously like it was reaching towards his face.
For his mask.
“Oh…” Usually he’d wonder how the other man had known who he was when his face was covered, but the answer was obvious. He knew who he was facing for the same reason that Kakashi had known he was nearby. The world around them had gotten more colourful.
Just a tad bit brighter.
“Go ahead,” With permission given, he reached out and carefully started to remove the mask from Kakashi’s face, a wooden pillar suddenly shooting out of the ground between them and wrapping itself around his wrist. “Tenzo, stand down.”
“But, Senpai!” glaring back at his teammate, Kakashi watched as he examined the look on his face for a moment before sighing. “If he tries to hurt you-”
“I won’t,” the other man offered, a small smile on his face when Kakashi returned his attention to him. “I just want to see your face.” With a muttered protest, Tenzo removed the wooden pillar from the man’s arm and allowed him to continue. Once the mask was off, he lowered his hand and just stood there staring. “You look different.”
“We’re older.”
“That’s not what I mean,” taking a step closer, he brought his other hand up to cup Kakashi’s face. “You had a lot more fire in your eyes the last time I saw you.”
“A lot has happened.”
People died.
Life got hectic.
Whatever energy he had as a kid was gone. Wasted away on missions gone wrong and friendships lost.
“Bakashi, listen-” Holding up a hand, Kakashi narrowed his eyes. Of all the stupid shit to follow him to this age, he couldn’t believe…
If Obito wasn’t already dead, he might seriously consider murdering him.
“My name is Kakashi,” he clarified, cringing at the reminder that even in the heat of battle Obito would always call him by that stupid nickname. “Ka-ka-shi.”
“That’s...not what i remember your friend calling you.”
“Ya well,” turning his eyes away, he huffed. “That was a nickname he called me. It’s not for you to use.”
A stupid nickname. One that he had hated with every fiber of his being when he was a kid having to deal with Obito calling him it every day, and one he couldn’t believe he would ever miss.
“Alright,” peering back over at the other man, he felt a warmth blooming in his chest when he was met with a smile. “Kakashi. I’ll make sure to remember that name.”
“Thank you,” the hand against his face hadn’t moved at all the entire conversation, and Kakashi couldn’t help but turn his face into it. Bury his nose into callused rough skin, and enjoy the scent that he had never gotten the chance to enjoy before. “I need-”
He had to leave. There was still a mission to do, and Tenzo was waiting for him.
No matter how much he wanted to stand there and enjoy the other man’s scent. Familiarize himself with the man that he was supposed to be with against all odds, he couldn’t.
“I have to go.” His heart broke saying those words, but he knew it was true. Those who failed those missions were worthless to the village. He knew that better than most.
“Whatever is it, i’ll be here after,” his soulmate, he would call him that from now on. It was the title that he deserved, even if they were enemies. “I can meet you somewhere.”
He should say no,
He shouldn’t even be here in the first place, talking to a Stone shinobi. An enemy.
Yet here he was. Standing in front of Gai, hiding his face in his hand, wanting to be near him. No matter how much his mind screamed at him to turn around and leave, his heart won in the end.
For once, he let his emotions have this one.
“Where can I meet you?”

Change Of Plans
Au: Mafia Au
Words: 1156
Pairing: Hatake Kakashi/ Anko
Summary: The jobs was to get into Onoki's party and make sure that Anko was safe while she was wooing her way into the targets bed. The problem? She's not the targets type.
Seduction missions aren’t Kakashis usual job, but Shikaku had wanted his best watching over Anko when she went into such a dangerous situation. Someone who was nearby and capable of handling an extremely dangerous situation just in case. After all, if something went terribly wrong when she was stuck in a building that was littered with Iwagakure gang members, Anko would be screwed.
Not that she couldn’t handle herself. Deadly and ruthless were the best words that Kakashi could think of to describe Anko. Though, her deadliness fit more with poisons and silent murders, rather than face-to-face confrontations.
When it came to facing the enemy down and making it out alive, that was Kakashi’s area of expertise.
So here he was. Standing in a room full of people who would kill him if they even caught a hint of who he was, watching as Anko slid up to her target’s side and started to flirt. Working her way into his good graces in hopes of getting him alone.
People always talked more when there weren’t prying ears listening in to private conversations
What he expected to witness was a successful wooing session that would result in Anko being led away to ‘private quarters’. Which would be his cue to sneak his way into the hallway and follow them to wherever it was they were going.
Make sure he was close by to help out, in case anything went wrong.
So when he instead sees Anko slinking away from her target, an annoyed look on her face, he knows that something’s wrong. Perhaps the target already had someone in mind, or he was too busy trying to chat up the people around him to pay Anko any attention.
Whatever it was, he knew he’d have the answer as soon as she pulled her phone out of her pocket and started typing. Most likely sending him a detailed description of-
His phone vibrated in his pocket.
Frowning, he dug it out and clicked the button on the side to see the message that Anko had sent him.
Not his type.
What was that supposed to mean? Anko was drop-dead gorgeous, with a voice that could make a person melt. How could anyone look at her and not be interested?
Unless…
Frowning, he opened the message and waited for his screen to spring to life. Allowing him to type out one simple word to confirm his suspicions.
Gay?
It’s only a few seconds before her answer rolls in, and his suspicions are confirmed with a simple rainbow flag emoji. There was someone slacking in Shikaku’s ranks, and Kakashi didn’t appreciate it. If they had done their research they could have sent in someone capable of doing the job from the start instead of wasting Anko’s time like this.
Now they were crunched to find a new solution. The next opening wouldn’t be for a month at least, and that was if they were lucky. Even if another party like this was held, there was no guarantee that they could get someone in again.
Onoki was particular about who he invited to his party, and it was part luck and part determination that had secured Kakashi and Anko a spot. It would be damn near impossible to get another invite unless they made one hell of an impression.
He needed to think fast. Shikaku wouldn’t be pleased if they came back empty-handed, even if it wasn’t technically their fault. He’d expect Kakashi to figure out a new plan on the spot. That was his specialty.
Feeling his phone vibrating in his hand, he glanced down to see what new message awaited him. What he had expected to see was something along the lines of Anko telling him that she was going to try another approach. That perhaps she had her eyes on someone else that might have information or at least an idea that would help him formulate a new plan.
Instead, he was greeted with the worst news she could have possibly sent him.
He keeps staring at you. Maybe the solution to our problem is easier than that pretty face of yours is making it seem.
He hated when she flirted with him while trying to convince him to do something he really didn’t want to. Seduction was not his area of expertise, and he had no interest in giving it a shot with no prior preparation or even the barest hint of what to talk about.
He was terrible when it came to talking to people. She knew that. Not that he couldn’t do it, but he needed time to prepare. Knowledge about the person he was talking about.
This wasn’t him picking on Tenzo by smooth-talking his way into a free lunch. If he screwed this up he was going to have to fight his way out of a building full of rival gang members.
Not impossible, but not preferable either.
Seeing another message pop up on the screen, he narrowed his eyes.
Quit having a panic attack and go flirt with the man. If you could convince me to crawl into bed with you, you can do it with him.
Somehow that didn’t feel like the compliment she probably intended it to be. They didn’t have time to discuss it though.
Pocketing his phone, he relaxed against the table and took a moment to examine the room around him. Reminding himself of the number of armed Iwagakure CBD gang members and each of their stations in the room.
If he so happened to lock eyes with the target while doing one last assessment of the place, that was merely a coincidence. One he took full advantage of when he noticed that Anko had not been lying to him. The man was eyeing him, and he wasn’t even trying to hide it at all.
Clearly, Anko wasn’t joking whenever she called him a ‘snack for the eyes’.
“Fine,” pushing himself away from the table he pocketed his hands and headed towards a small group off in the distance. His hope was that the target would see his movements and decide to cut him off, rather than forcing him to make his way over to where he was for what was no doubt going to be the worst flirt session ever.
Hopefully, Anko would have a nice present waiting for him when this was all said and done. There were a few things that he could think of that would make such an unpleasant turn of events a little more bearable, and as he watched his target dismissing himself from his current conversation and heading straight for him he couldn’t help but let his mind wander.
A few enjoyable thoughts about Anko and those delicious lips he loved so much were bound to get him through whatever he was about to endure for the sake of taking Onoki and his little territory stealing gang down a peg.

Game Time Flirting
Words: 1300
Pairings: Hatake Kakashi/Tenzou Yamato
Warnings: Shameless flirting, bad flirting, NSFWish flirting.
Summary: The goal? Win the challenge and prove that he's the ultimate breath of the wild player. The strategy? Distract Tenzo with the worst pick up lines he can think of
A hero does not retreat.
When Kakashi had offered to let Tenzo pick the challenge that they would be taking part in for their next youtube video, this was the last one he had been expecting the man who refused to fight a lynal or a guardian to throw at him.
“You know what you’re getting yourself into, right?” he asked, looking towards the other man, watching as he set everything up on his computer for the stream. “If you run into a guardian or even a lynal-”
“I read the outlines of the challenge, yes,” Finishing with his setup, Tenzo fell back into his chair with a groan. “I can fight them, that’s not a problem. I just prefer to avoid them when I can. They eat weapon’s and I only get one sword in return from a Lynal and nothing from a Guardian. It’s just not worth the exchange.”
“But today you’ll-”
“You asked for a challenge,” Tenzo rolled his eyes, forever exhausted by whatever Kakashi said. “This is a challenge. Is it my favourite challenge? No. But would I like to see you die first and lose because you have an overinflated ego in this game that needs to be taken care of? Absolutely.”
“I do not have an ego.”
“You have the biggest ego, Kakashi. Don’t lie to me.”
“It’s not ego if it’s backed up by fact, and it’s simply a fact that I’m fantastic at this game and will end up winning. You’re going to have to buy dinner, and then you’re going to complain about it the whole time and it’s going to be adorable.”
The scream Tenzo let out was ear piercing, but worth it. Kakashi would never allow anyone to doubt his skills in his favourite game, and he was going to prove that he was the best with their challenge.
Then he’d get teasing rights for the rest of the year, and he’d make sure to remind Tenzo of his victory every time they were in bed together. Just to make sure he never forgot.
“I can’t wait to wipe the smirk off of your face,” Falling back into his chair, Tenzo swirled around once before stopping to face Kakashi. “Anyways, do you remember the rules we set?”
“We’re going to start from the end of the great plateau so that we’re not wasting time with the beginning. Drop all of the weapons, bows, and shields that we already have so that we start from the beginning, there will be a death count and whoever dies the most by the end loses, and the challenge ends when we have all of the divine beasts and have defeated Ganon.” Receding the rules was a breeze. Tenzo had only repeated them to him a hundred times over the last few days, cementing them in his mind for eternity.
“And?”
Rolling his eyes, he turned to face his own computer finally. “And just focus on the main story,” he repeated Tenzo’s words with a hint of disgust in his voice. “No having fun.”
“The purpose of the challenge is...you know what, you run around all you want. Just means you’ll run into more lynals and guardians,” Turning to face his own computer, Tenzo picked up his controller and started up the recording program. “This video ends when we defeat the first divine beast. You can choose whichever one you want.”
“Mmm, in that case, I think I’ll go for Vah Naboris,” The look Tenzo gave him was priceless. Somewhere between utter disgust and disbelief. “What better way to prove to you that I have the skill to back up my talk than beating the toughest divine beast first?”
“I hope you die.”
“If I die, you don’t get-” A hand reached out to cover his mouth and silence the next word.
“In the game,” Tenzo clarified. “I hope you die in the game.”
Ahhh right, the game.
Focusing his attention on the game, Kakashi started up his own recording and immediately opened the pause screen to drop all of his weapons. It wasn’t a problem of course. One quick visit to Hyrule castle and he’d have all of the top-tier weapons he needed to get through the game. While he did that, Tenzo took care of the intro. Not that Kakashi didn’t have his microphone on, it was just that Tenzo had a ...nicer voice. A voice that people actually liked listening to when he was playing his games.
Once he was done ridding himself of all his equipment, he headed off towards the castle. It was a risk of course. He’d have to run fast and pick up some sub-par weapons on the way to perry guardian beams, but once he was in he’d have his pick of weapons.
“Damn it!” Glancing towards Yamato’s screen, he chuckled when he saw Tenzo struggling to climb up the side of a mountain in the rain. It was moments like this that reminded a gamer to be humble and appreciate the little gifts the game gave them, like Revali’s gale. “Don’t say a word, Kakashi.”
How rude, calling him out like that while they were recording. Kakashi could already see the comments rolling in on Tenzo’s screen. No doubt some of them were making fun of Tenzo for dating a ‘bully’.
“I would never make fun of you,” he lied, reading some of the responses on his own screen telling him to be nice to his boyfriend. “You’re my princess. I’m supposed to save you.”
Tenzo’s ears burned a bright red for all his viewers to see. The downside of him choosing to show his face in his videos.
“Are you going to try to win through flirting?” He huffed. “Because it’s not going to work.”
“Mmm,” finally reaching Hyrule castle, Kakashi made his way through the front doors and immodestly parried the first guardian that tried to attack him. “Have I ever told you that you complete my heart container?”
Tenzo paused what he was doing and slowly turned to face Kakashi, a stern look on his face. “You know that’s the absolute worst pickup line I have ever heard.”
“I’m sure I can do worse,” Challenging himself, Kakashi made his way through the castle as he thought up another line. An evil smirk pulling at his lips when he remembered one he had heard Gai using on Iruka once. “You know, I think I’m going to call you Epona from now on,” his comments blew up with ‘no’s’ and ‘don’t do it’s’, but it was too late. He was in too deep. “And then I can ride you all day.”
Tenzo’s controller hit the desk, his mouth agape as he stared at Kakashi.
This was it.
Today was the day Tenzo was finally going to dump him, and he deserved it. That had been too far.
“You know,” picking up his controller once more, Tenzo turned back towards his own game. “You make me wetter than the water temple.”
At this moment Kakashi was glad his viewers couldn’t see his face. His cheeks and ears were burning with embarrassment, and his eyes were glued on Tenzo.
Which was how he got his first death. Too focused on his boyfriends and the words that had just left his mouth he allowed himself to be hit by a guardian beam, killing him instantly.
“One death for you,” a small, satisfied smirk made its home on Tenzo’s face. “You sure you’re going to win this one, Kakashi?”
Cruel. Tenzo was absolutely, completely ruthless in his assault on Kakashi’s pride, and he loved it. His heart had made the best choice when it told Kakashi that Tenzo was the one for him, and every day he thanked it once again.
Even if he was currently losing.
