(Some of) the obscure 3DS tech demos from E3 2010
With the Noclip Archive's 1080p upload of Nintendo's E3 2010 press conference yesterday, I went back into the barely-documented 3DS tech demo rabbit hole for a little bit!
Most people know of the "main" 3DS tech demo from E3 2010, which showed multiple 3D dioramas of Nintendo characters that would later be repurposed for the Puzzle Swap pieces in StreetPass Mii Plaza. But there are a couple more tech demos shown by Nintendo on the show floor that have barely or never seen the light of day since, mostly because Nintendo seemed to not like people pointing too many cameras at the 3DS screens!
youtube
The following appears to be the only currently known footage of the "3D Hopper" tech demo, documented by Destructoid! It is part of the trio of 3D demos alongside 3D Paddleball and 3D Challenge, previously reported to be shown to the press behind closed-doors, but this video appears to have been taken directly on the show floor. The original YouTube upload of this footage seems to have gone private, this has been saved from a video tweet I made in 2020.
You can find some articles from news outlets that have talked about this demo, including IGN and Engadget:
While there hasn't been any found footage of 3D Paddleball that I know of, the last of the "3D" trio, 3D Challenge, has been preserved back in 2020! I teamed up with preservation group Forest of Illusion to document the demo in coordination with its release:
youtube
Many games that would end up being first-party and third-party 3DS titles were demoed at the show floor in the form of interactive demos or videos, such as the Metal Gear Solid 3 port, Kid Icarus Uprising, Ocarina of Time 3D, and perhaps the most well-known of which, the original version of Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
What would eventually become games included with the 3DS, AR Games and Face Raiders were also shown in the form of tech demos, as well as a demo showing classic NES and SNES games in 3D that would eventually become the basis for the underutilized 3D Classics line. The following appears to be the only known footage of the demo from Nintendo World Report:
youtube
I continue to find info (and in some cases the lack thereof) about the 3DS' presence in E3 2010 fascinating, so hopefully more people end up interested in digging up more info or footage from the event!

Week in Review
October 23rd-29th
Welcome to Fragile Practice, where I attempt to make something of value out of stuff I have to read.
My future plan is to do longer-form original pieces on interesting topics or trends. For now, I'm going to make the weekly reviews habitual and see if I have any time left.
Tumblr media
Technology
OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats - Tech Crunch; Kyle Wiggers
OpenAI launched a new research team called AI Safety and Security to investigate the potential harms of artificial intelligence focused on AI alignment, AI robustness, AI governance, and AI ethics.
Note: Same energy as “cigarette company funds medical research into smoking risks”.
Artists Allege Meta’s AI Data Deletion Request Process Is a ‘Fake PR Stunt’ - Wired; Kate Knibbs
Artists who participated in Meta’s Artificial Intelligence Artist Residency Program accused the company of failing to honor their data deletion requests and claim that Meta used their personal data to train its AI models without their consent.
Note: Someday we will stop being surprised that corporate activities without obvious profit motive are all fake PR stunts.
GM and Honda ditch plan to build cheaper electric vehicles - The Verge; Andrew J. Hawkins
General Motors and Honda cancel their joint venture to develop and produce cheaper electric vehicles for the US market, citing the chip shortage, rising costs of battery materials, and the changing market conditions.
Note: What are the odds this isn’t related to the 7 billion dollars the US government announced to create hydrogen hubs.
'AI divide' across the US leaves economists concerned - The Register; Thomas Claburn
A new study by economists from Harvard University and MIT reveals a significant gap in AI adoption and innovation across different regions in the US.
The study finds that AI usage is highest in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, but was also noted in Nashville, San Antonio, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Diego, and Tampa, as well as Riverside, Louisville, Columbus, Austin, and Atlanta.
Nvidia to Challenge Intel With Arm-Based Processors for PCs - Bloomberg; Ian King
Nvidia is using Arm technology to develop CPUs that would challenge Intel processors in PCs, and which could go on sale as soon as 2025.
Note: I am far from an NVIDIA fan, but I’m stoked for any amount of new competition in the CPU space.
New tool lets artists fight AI image bots by hiding corrupt data in plain sight - Engadget; Sarah Fielding
A team at the University of Chicago created Nightshade, a tool that lets artists fight AI image bots by adding undetectable pixels into an image that can alter how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like.
Nightshade is intended to protect artists work and has been tested on both Stable Diffusion and an in-house AI built by the researchers.
IBM's NorthPole chip runs AI-based image recognition 22 times faster than current chips - Tech Xplore; Bob Yirka
NorthPole combines the processing module and the data it uses in a two-dimensional array of memory blocks and interconnected CPUs, and is reportedly inspired by the human brain.
NorthPole can currently only run specialized AI processes and not training processes or large language models, but the researchers plan to test connecting multiple chips together to overcome this limitation.
Apple’s $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans - Ars Technica; Kevin Purdy
Note: These scans are super cool. And make me feel somewhat better about insisting on quality cables. A+.

The Shifting Web
On-by-default video calls come to X, disable to retain your sanity - The Register; Brandon Vigliarolo
Video and audio calling is limited to anyone you follow or who is in your address book, if you granted X permission to comb through it.
Calling other users also requires that they’ve sent at least one direct message to you before.
Only premium users can place calls, but everyone can receive them.
Google Search Boss Says Company Invests to Avoid Becoming ‘Roadkill’ - The New York Times; Nico Grant
Google’s senior vice president overseeing search said that he sees a world of threats that could humble his company at any moment.
Google Maps is getting new AI-powered search updates, an enhanced navigation interface and more - Tech Crunch; Aisha Malik
Note: These AI recommender systems are going to be incredibly valuable advertising space. It is interesting that Apple decided to compete with Google in maps but not in basic search, but has so far not placed ads in the search results.
Reddit finally takes its API war where it belongs: to AI companies - Ars Technica; Scharon Harding
Reddit met with generative AI companies to negotiate a deal for being paid for its data, and may block crawlers if no deal is made soon.
Note: Google searches for info on Reddit often seem more effective than searching Reddit itself.  If they are unable to make a deal, and Reddit follows through, it will be a legitimate loss for discoverability but also an incredibly interesting experiment to see what Reddit is like without Google.
Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off - 404 Media; Emanuel Maiberg
Bandcamp’s new owner (Songtradr) offered jobs to just half of existing employees, with cuts disproportionately hitting union leaders. Every member of the union’s eight-person bargaining team was laid off, and 40 of the union's 67 members lost their jobs.
Songtradr spokesperson Lindsay Nahmiache claimed that the firm didn’t have access to union membership information.
Note: This just sucks. Bandcamp is rad, and it’s hard to imagine it continuing to be rad after this. I wonder if Epic had ideas for BC that didn’t work out.

Surveillance & Digital Privacy
Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status:  'Very Creepy' - Slashdot
Mozilla gave the current state of digital privacy a 75.6/100, with 100 being the creepiest.
They measured security features, data collection, and data sharing practices of over 500 gadgets, apps, and cars to come up with their score.
Every car Mozilla tested failed to meet their privacy and security standards.
Note: It would be great if even one auto brand would take privacy seriously.
EPIC Testifies in Support of Massachusetts Data Privacy and Protection Act -Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
Massachusetts version of ADPPA.
Note: While it may warm my dead heart to see any online privacy protections in law, scrambling to do so in response to generative AI is unlikely to protect Americans in any meaningful way from the surveillance driven form of capitalism we’ve all been living under for decades.
Complex Spy Platform StripedFly Bites 1M Victims - Dark Reading
StripedFly is a complex platform disguised as a cryptominer and evaded detection for six years by using a custom version of EternalBlue exploit, a built-in Tor network tunnel, and trusted services like GitLab, GitHub, and Bitbucket to communicate with C2 servers and update its functionality.
iPhones have been exposing your unique MAC despite Apple's promises otherwise - Ars Technica
A privacy feature which claimed to hide the Wi-Fi MAC address of iOS devices when joining a network was broken since iOS 14, and was finally patched in 17.1, released on Wednesday.
Note: I imagine this bug was reported a while ago, but wasn’t publically reported until the fix was released as a term of apple’s bug bounty program.

Hacker Breach Exposes 23andMe’s Customers’ Data
Tumblr media
Genetic Testing Giant Confirms Massive Security Compromise
A staggering breach has rattled the foundations of 23andMe, the renowned genetic testing company, as it confirms unauthorized access to nearly seven million user profiles. A spokesperson disclosed to CNN on Tuesday that the breach encompassed sensitive details such as ancestry reports, zip codes, and birth years, significantly impacting a subset of the company’s extensive user base.
The Scale of the Breach
The unsettling revelation came to light through a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Friday, where 23andMe indicated that approximately 0.1% of its user accounts, approximately 14,000 profiles, fell victim to the cyber intrusion. However, subsequent investigations unveiled a more substantial impact, with hackers infiltrating around 5.5 million profiles employing the company’s DNA Relatives feature.
Extent of Compromised Information
Notably, hackers also managed to access a subset of family tree data linked to 1.4 million DNA Relatives profiles, raising concerns about the depth and breadth of compromised personal information. Engadget, a prominent tech news outlet, initially shed light on the broader implications of this extensive security breach.
23andMe faces data breach: Over 7 million users exposed to hackers
youtube
Ongoing Cybersecurity Woes
This incident adds 23andMe to the roster of major U.S. corporations grappling with severe cybersecurity breaches affecting a larger populace than initially acknowledged. Just recently, Okta, an identity management firm, acknowledged a data breach impacting all users within its customer support system, a figure significantly higher than initially reported.
Modus Operandi: Credential Stuffing
The method of intrusion employed by the hackers has been identified as ‘credential stuffing.’ Leveraging old usernames and passwords obtained from other platforms, this rudimentary yet effective technique facilitated unauthorized access to numerous 23andMe customer accounts.
Company’s Response and Measures Taken
In response to the breach, 23andMe embarked on a comprehensive investigation aided by third-party forensic experts. Despite declining to disclose the perpetrators, the company is diligently notifying affected customers, complying with legal obligations.
A statement posted on the company’s website outlined measures to bolster data protection, mandating password resets for existing customers and implementing two-step verification for both new and existing users.
As concerns over data security and privacy amplify, this breach underscores the pressing need for stringent measures to safeguard sensitive personal information in an increasingly digitized world.
The ramifications of such a breach extend far beyond the compromised data itself. Users are now grappling with potential identity theft, privacy infringement, and the misuse of their genetic information. This breach has reignited conversations about the ethical responsibilities of companies dealing with highly personal data and the imperative to fortify cybersecurity protocols.
In the wake of this breach, regulatory bodies and lawmakers are likely to intensify their scrutiny of companies handling sensitive user data, potentially leading to stricter compliance standards and regulations aimed at fortifying cybersecurity measures and protecting consumer privacy.
As 23andMe continues its damage control and endeavors to rebuild trust, the cybersecurity landscape faces renewed challenges, emphasizing the criticality of proactive measures to thwart malicious cyber threats and safeguard user information from similar breaches in the future.

No to data center corporate welfare.
Data centers don’t need to be subsidized as businesses that need them and will build them either way.
There is zero justification for giving taxpayer giveaways to big tech companies and cryptocurrency tycoons to build their data centers.
Boondoggle - Big Tech's AI Blackmail State and local data center extortion is going national. Pat Garofalo Dec 18, 2024 If they don’t get it, the tech titans are threatening to move new data center construction to the Middle East. And if Biden doesn’t deliver, I imagine they’ll ask the incoming Trump administration for the same thing. This is government policy by extortion, plain and simple, and done in the name of accelerating the construction of facilities that provide few jobs, no surrounding economic development, and that, perhaps most importantly, are vital and necessary infrastructure for the corporations in question, negating the need for public subsidies or other regulatory shortcuts to bolster their construction. One added wrinkle is that the tech corporations are arguing an executive order on data centers is necessary to protect America’s advantages in the artificial intelligence industry. They claim that failure to ease data center construction will hinder the development of AI in ways that are detrimental to America’s national interest, and at least imply that standing in the way of new construction is unpatriotic. This is something important to watch out for. As Big Tech firms search for more subsidies and regulatory shortcuts, they are going to slap AI onto anything and everything they do as a way to make it seem fancy and indispensable, when most of it will be useless or unrelated to artificial intelligence under any normal definition of the term.
They say that AI is supposed to replace human jobs, so there’s no logical assertion they could make that this would “create jobs” in that case. It’s an irreconcilable contradiction.
The woke-washing of scammy tech is used to promote, or at least silence opposition to, a lot of otherwise obviously undesirable stuff that’s later shut down by reasonable regulators.
NextGov FCW - Biden orders federal land to be leased for AI data center development - The executive action will leverage federally protected lands to develop data centers capable of supporting AI software, with a priority on incorporating clean energy sources. By Alexandra Kelley, Staff Correspondent, Nextgov/FCW January 14, 2025 Marrying ambitions for leadership in AI innovation with clean energy goals, the EO will ask the Departments of Defense and Energy to lease federal land sites to private sector entities to construct frontier AI data centers “at speed and scale,” supported by renewable energy.
The Verge - OpenAI and Softbank are starting a $500 billion AI data center company / ‘The Stargate Project’ is starting its buildout in Texas, with participation from Oracle, MGX, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Arm. By Richard Lawler, a senior editor following news across tech, culture, policy, and entertainment. He joined The Verge in 2021 after several years covering news at Engadget. Jan 21, 2025, 5:45 PM EST A plan to build a system of data centers for artificial intelligence has been revealed in a White House press conference, with Masayoshi Son, Sam Altman, and Larry Ellison joining Donald Trump to announce The Stargate Project. Their companies, Softbank, OpenAI, and Oracle (respectively), along with MGX are listed as “initial equity funders” for $500 billion in investments over the next four years, “building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States.”
The New York Times - Trump Wants to Unleash Energy, as Long as It’s Not Wind or Solar - Legal experts said the president was testing the boundaries of executive power with aggressive orders designed to stop the country from transitioning to renewable energy. Brad Plumer By Lisa Friedman Coral Davenport and Brad Plumer Jan. 21, 2025 Updated 7:04 p.m. ET The orders that Mr. Trump signed on Monday would make it easier and cheaper for companies to produce oil and gas and for the government to stop clean energy projects that have been approved. While some actions lie within his purview, others may violate federal law or run counter to judicial decisions. Among other things, Mr. Trump raised the possibility of reversing the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases, which has been confirmed by the Supreme Court, and proposed to halt funding for electric vehicle charging stations that Congress has already authorized.
My letter to reps:
I’m against corporate welfare government subsidies for data centers. Tech companies need to be regulated and reigned in to ensure public health for the communities where they are located. Data centers don’t need to be subsidized as businesses that need them and will build them either way. Tech firms need to comply with data privacy laws so they can’t threaten to position them overseas anyhow. There’s no justification for giving our taxes to big companies for bogus claims of economic development that do not materialize from these projects, which just wind up in conflict with communities where the politicians sold out the citizenry with the trick of trickle down economics.
Please feel free to copy or repurpose the contents of my letter for your own letters to reps.
MIT Technology Review - How Bitcoin mining devastated this New York town Between rising electricity rates and soaring climate costs, cryptomining is taking its toll on communities. By Lois Parshley April 18, 2022 As the long winter began to thaw, neighbors noticed a new disturbance: mining servers generate an extreme amount of heat, requiring extensive ventilation to avert shutoffs. Those fans generated a constant, high-frequency whine, McMahon says, “like a small-engine plane getting ready to take off.” It wasn’t just the decibels, but the pitch: “It registers at this weird level, like a toothache that won’t go away.” Carla Brancato lives across the river from Zafra, a crypto-mining and hosting company owned by Plattsburgh resident Ryan Brienza. She says that for several years her condo vibrated from its noise, as if someone were constantly running a vacuum upstairs. Meanwhile, the automated nature of these servers meant that the new mines provided few local jobs. “I’m pro–economic development,” Read says, “but the biggest mine operation has fewer jobs than a new McDonald’s.” Plattsburgh doesn’t have a city income tax, and most miners lease their buildings, meaning they aren’t paying property taxes. (...) Economist Matteo Benetton, a coauthor of the paper and a professor at the Hass School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, says that crypto mining can depress local economies. In places with fixed electricity supplies, operations suck up grid capacity, potentially leading to supply shortages, rationing, and blackouts. Even in places with ample access to power, like upstate New York, mining can crowd out other potential industries that might have employed more people. “While there are private benefits, through the electricity market, there are social costs,” Benetton says. These impacts are now being felt across the country.
DC News Now - Prince William Co. supervisors sued over data center proposal - by: Max Marcilla Posted: Dec 2, 2022 “This is a bad project,” Plaintiff Roger Yackel, who lives near the proposed site, told DC News Now. “As we learn more, and more and more citizens learn more and more, there will be more pressure put on the supervisors.” It’s a legal battle, but also a battle against homeowners and supervisors who voiced support for the plan, saying the data center would be an economic boom and create jobs in the county. “I think the Board of Supervisors did a great thing to help pivot and transform Prince William County so we can get some good quality jobs here,” said one supporter after the public hearing.
WUSA9 - What’s all the data center noise about? Neighbors say Northern Virginia data centers emit a noise they just can't tune out. We took to the streets and dove in to the science to figure out why. Author: Abby Llorico, Bryce Robinson Published: 7:21 AM EDT April 7, 2023 Updated: 4:20 PM EDT April 7, 2023 Along with an audible hum, the Amazon Web Services Data Center in Manassas and others nearby have also been generating rumbles of complaints from the nearby community. “These data centers are loud, noisy beasts and they are being built too close to residential areas,” said Roger Yackel, who’s been active in the community’s pushback on data centers that they say are being approved without consideration of the nearby homes and schools. “That's not something that we should have to live with.” John Lyver, a retired NASA analyst, has taken to tracking the noise from the data centers in his neighborhoods. “I’m finding that the noise is far worse than anybody ever figured it was going to be,” he said.
Daily Mail - Residents of small Pennsylvania town are being driven mad by huge BITCOIN MINE whose two large cooling towers vibrate and hum more loudly than a waterfall By Dominic Yeatman For Dailymail.Com Published: 14:40 EDT, 13 December 2023 'I have a little pond in front of my house where I used to sit and have my coffee at,' he added. 'I can't even enjoy that because I can't even hear the water over the Bitcoin. It is louder than the waterfall.' Talen Energy won over locals with promises of hundreds of news jobs and an economic boom in the township of 6,000 when they announced plans for the operation last year. 'Amazon, Google, all those cloud computing applications, those are the potential clients, customers that we will have in the data center buildings,' said Dustin Wertheimer, VP and Division CFO Talen Cumulus and Susquehanna Data Center. 'On the coin mining side, there will be computers again located in those buildings and those computers will run computations that will trigger and generate the issuance of coins.' The controversial cryptocurrency has been in the news again after a wild ride since the start of December. A rally last week saw it rise above $44,000 to reach its highest level in almost two years - then on Sunday it lost 6.5 percent of its value in just 20 minutes and dipped below $41,000. Global bank Standard Chartered thinks bitcoin could surpass $100,000 before the end of 2024 - yet well-known JP Morgan boss Jamie Dimon said last week that US lawmakers should 'close it down'. The first 1,500 Bitcoins out of Salem Township were sold for $37.6 million after the 180 megawatt mine was plugged in this summer, but that was little consolation to residents at an angry town hall meeting on Tuesday.

[ad_1] Apparently President's Day was created to honor George Washington's birthday. But now on a Monday in February we celebrate every US president by shopping for deals. Nixon, Taft, Coolidge, Polk, Johnson, Hoover and all those other guys — they'd be quite proud of us. In our searches we found quite a few deals on the tech we recommend, including $100 off Apple's new iPad mini and a streaming deal for a year of Peacock for $30. Our top pick for the best Bluetooth tracker, the Chipolo One, is on sale and Engadget readers can get an additional 10 percent off (with the code ENGADGET10), plus ThermoWorks' flagship instant-read thermometer is down to a near record-low price. Here are the best President's Day tech deals from this week that you can shop right now. Spotlight Presidents' Day deal The best President's Day tech deals Apple AirTags (four-pack) for $70 ($30 off): This is a record-low price for a bundle of AirTags in which the price per Bluetooth tracker is only $17.50. While there are rumors of new AirTags coming soon, these remain some of the best Bluetooth trackers you can get at the moment, particularly if you are an iPhone user. Attach them to your keys, backpack, bike and other belongings (using the right AirTag holders, of course) to keep track of all of your stuff neatly within the Find My app. Apple 2024 MacBook Pro M4 for $1,400 at Amazon ($199 off with coupon): Apple's latest Pro-model laptop is down to $1,400 at Amazon with a discount and an on-page coupon. The 14-inch MacBook Pro has 16GB of memory and 512GB SSD storage and both the Space Black and Silver colorways are on sale. Engadget's Devindra Hardawar gave the computer a 92 in his review and it's currently Engadget's pick for the best MacBook for creatives. It has a fast M4 chip, long battery life, bright display and Sharp 12MP Center Stage webcam. Apple Studio Display with tilt-adjustable stand for $1,300 at Amazon ($300 off): We appreciated the excellent build quality of Apple's pricey display in our official review, but noted that it's probably only for Apple diehards. Both the standard glass model and the nano-textured glass option are on sale. The Studio Display made our list of the best monitors and has built-in speakers, a 12MP camera, three USB-C ports and a screen with 5K resolution — but a max refresh rate of 60Hz and single-zone backlighting. Apple Pencil (USB-C) for $69 at Walmart ($10 off): Apple sells too many versions of the Apple Pencil. So we made a guide. The USB-C model works with all current-generation iPads, including the M2 iPad Air, the M4 iPad Pro, the new iPad mini and the 10th generation iPad. It'll also work with a few older tablets too. Just note that this one attahced magnetically but doesn't recharge that way, like the other Apple Pencils. And it doesn't have pressure sensitivity. Also at Amazon and Target. Peacock Peacock Premium (one-year) at Peacock for $30 ($50 off): Here's one from our new streaming deals guide: A year of Peacock's streaming service is $30 if you use the code WINTERSAVINGS at checkout. The code is valid through February 18 and saves you 60 percent off the usual $80 annual fee. Though it's called "Premium" it's actually the ad-supported tier (Premium Plus is the ad-free plan but it's not discounted and goes for $140 yearly). Peacock is one of our picks for the best streaming services and has some great original content, including Poker Face, a Twisted Metal adaptation and Mrs. Davis. ThermoWorks Thermapen One for $79 ($30 off): This Engadget exclusive deal brings one of our favorite grilling gadgets down to a near record-low price. It displays temperatures super quickly on its easy-to-read display, and the latest model has a brighter display and improved accuracy when compared to the previous version of the thermometer. It also has an IP67 rating, so it'll stay protected against accidental spills. Chipolo One (four-pack) for $67.50 ($32 off): Use the code ENGADGET10 at checkout to get an additional 10 percent off all Chipolo devices right now. That brings a four-pack of our favorite Bluetooth trackers down to $67.50, or roughly $17 per tracker. Chipolo devices work with Android and iOS, and in our testing, we found them to have the loudest ring and the speediest left-behind alerts, so it's unlikely you'll get too far before being alerted that you left some belongings behind. KitchenAid Artisan Series 5 quart tilt head stand mixer for $350 at Amazon ($100 off): One of our top picks for kitchen tech is, unsurprisingly, KitchenAid's famed stand mixer. It's not only powerful, the seemingly endless array of available attachments make it a true kitchen multitasker. KitchenAid is hosting a larger sale for President's Day on its own website, and many of the brand's countertop appliances are currently up to $100 off. Dyson V12 vaccuum for $499 at Dyson ($150 off): Now through President's Day, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim stick vacuum is $150 off. This is the lighter sibling to the V15 model we picked as the best cordless vac in our guide. This one includes the Fluffy Optic cleaner head that won us over in our testing. It's a hard-floor brush head with a laser "blade" that clearly shows you the tiniest bits of dust so you can be sure to suck them up. The Gen5 Outsize Absolute is also on sale for $150 off. It's down to $899. That model is the largest cordless vac and has up to 140 minutes of run time. iRobot Roomba Combo 10 Max for $789 at Wellbots ($610 off with code): Wellbots has a few iRobot vacuums on sale for President's Day, including the new Roomba Combo 10 Max and its Autowash Dock, which can empty and cleans the vac. Right now it's on sale for $789 if you use the code ENGAD410 at checkout. That'll take a full $610 off the hefty $1,399 MSRP. That's even cheaper than the last time it was on sale. Not only does the robot itself mop and vacuum, the dock can hold 60 days worth of dust and seven days worth of dirty mop water. For a slightly cheaper combo robo vac, Wellbots is also discounting the Roomba Combo j5 for $239 instead of the full $529 with the code ENGAD210. Photo by Billy Steele/Engadget Samsung LS60D Music Frame for $150 at Woot ($250 off): You might be familiar with Samsung's Frame TV — the sets that mimic works of art when you're not watching television. The Music Frame furthers that home-theater-as-decor aesthetic by hiding Dolby Atmos audio equipment behind what looks like a regular picture frame. This one doesn't have a screen, instead you'll insert your own photo or art behind the glass. Inside are two woofers, two tweeters and two mid-range drivers. The speaker array is capable of Dolby Atmos audio and it leverages Samsung's SpaceFit tech to calibrate the sound to the room. We checked it out at CES 2024 and were impressed with how robust the music sounded. Fitbit Charge 6 Fitness Tracker for $116 at Amazon ($44 off): Our current top pick for a fitness tracker is back on sale. It went as low as $100 for Black Friday, but this is the lowest price we've seen this year. Our favorite fitness tracker is the successor to our previous top pick, the Charge 5. This new generation has a more accurate heart rate monitor and the ability to pair with exercise machines via Bluetooth. Plus there's now a physical side button for navigation in addition to the touchscreen. Ring Battery Video Doorbell for $60 at Amazon ($40 off): Another Amazon security device company, Ring, is also having a sale right now. The discount matches the record-low price for the Ring Video Doorbell. This battery-powered model doesn't need to be wired into your home, so you can put it near any door. The removable battery is rechargeable via USB-C and will likely need a refill every couple months. You'll need a Ring subscription to access all the features, like person and package alerts and extended event history. Apple Apple Music (6 months) for $3 at Apple ($60 off): Normally an Apple Music subscription is $11 per month after a 30-day free trial. And when you buy a new Apple device, you usually get a three-month trial. But if you somehow haven't yet signed up for the service, this promotion applies to you. The deal will run through February 27 and is open only to people who are entirely new Apple Music — current and previous customers are not eligible, nor are those who qualify for the free trial that comes with a new device. You'll need to redeem the offer through an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Apple Music made our guide to the best music streaming services for its lossless streaming quality, ease of use with Apple devices and emphasis on using DJ curation over AI and algorithm playlists. Note that the subscription will automatically renew unless you cancel. NordPass Premium (27 months) for $35 at Nord ($46 off): One of our favorite password managers for cross-platform availability is having a sale. NordPass Premium is currently available for $35 for 27 months. At full price, two years would cost you $81, and this deal throws in three months for free. NordPass also offers a free tier, but the Premium plan keeps you logged in when you switch devices while also helping you analyze your passwords to improve their strength. EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra for $5,299 at EcoFlow ($797 off): The whole-home backup battery and inverter from EcoFlow is on sale for a Valentine's Day/President's Day sale at the manufacturer's site. Mill food recycler for $874 at Mill ($125 off): A President's Day sale from Mill, the kitchen food recycling company, will run until Monday, February 17 and will give you $125 off a new food recycling bin. If you've explored the different options for composting food and have decided to give a machine a try, Mill could be a good one to check out. The machine dries and grinds food scraps, reducing odors and bulk while creating grounds that you can add to your garden. Expired Presidents' Day tech deals Apple AirPods Pro 2 for $169 ($90 off): Everyone's favorite buds (seriously, people buy a lot of these things) fell to a record low of $154 for Black Friday, but this is the best price we've seen this year. They're a little older at this point, debuting in 2022, but they're still our favorite wireless earbuds for iPhone. Engadget's Billy Steele gave them a score of 88 in his review when the buds first came out, citing the fantastic sound and amazing transparency mode. Apple AirPods 4 for $100 at Amazon ($29 off): Apple's newest wireless earbuds came out in September and last week, they hit their lowest price yet. That price is still going strong, so you can still pick them up at a discount. Engadget's Billy Steele gave them a review score of 88, saying they sounded clearer and more balanced than most open-back earbuds. Plus you get all the Apple-perks like fast pairing and device switching with other Apple gadgets, hands-free Siri and Find My tracking. Also at Target and Best Buy. There's also a noise-canceling version on sale for $149. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (16 GB) for $135 at Amazon ($25 off): Our choice for best premium ereader. is the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition that goes for $200 and isn't discounted. The standard Paperwhite, on sale here, is basically the same machine, minus a few (inessential) perks like auto-adjusting front lights, extra storage and wireless charging. This is the lowest price we've tracked this year (it went about $5 lower for Black Friday) on a very lovely e-reader with remarkably fast page turns, a super crisp display and a great battery life. Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition (32 GB) for $230 at Amazon ($50 off): Engadget's Valentina Palladino found a lot to like about the Kindle Colorsoft in her review including quick page turns, the fairly accurate (if a bit cold) color technology and the pinch to zoom feature, which was especially nice for reading comics. If you're just looking to read black and white text, you can save yourself a bit of money and go with the Paperwhite — text on the Colorsoft is not as crisp. 8BitDo Pro 2 controller for $39 at Amazon ($12 off): The black version of one of our picks for the best Switch controllers is down to a record-low price. The programmable controller is compatible with the Switch, Apple devices, Android devices, Windows PC, Steam Deck and Raspberry Pi. Blink Mini 2 (2-pack) for $38 at Amazon ($32 off): The Blink Mini 2 security camera sell for $40 each at full price, so this deal gets you two for less than the MSRP for one. The small security cameras have two way talk and listen, capture live video in 1080p and have infrared sensors for black and white images at night. You'll need a Blink Subscription Plan if you want to save clips to the cloud, but if you also buy a Sync Module 2, you can save clips from your Blink Mini cameras to a flash drive. Blink Video Doorbell and Sync Module 2 for $35 ($35 off): Here's a bundle that combines the Video Doorbell with a Sync Module 2, the device that allows you to store footage from your Blink cameras and doorbells locally. The doorbell offers 1080p daytime footage and infrared night video plus two-way audio. You can use it wired or on batteries that should last two years before needing to be replaced. The Blink subscription plan is required if you want person detection and the ability to store clips in the cloud. Samsung Evo Select (1TB) microSD card for $70 at Amazon ($10 off): The Evo Select is the budget pick in our guide to the best microSD cards: It's not the fastest model we tested, but it'll serve as a way to add storage for your Nintendo Switch or Android tablet. This deal matches the all-time low for the extra-spacious 1TB model. Also at Samsung and B&H. iRobot Roomba Vac Essential (Q0120) for $119 at Amazon ($130 off): The top pick in our guide to the best budget robot vacuums has hit a new low price. It can't map paths in your home, instead it randomly traverses a room until it's covered the area. But it has good suction and cleans well, plus it's easy to set up and control through Roomba's mobile app. Also at Best Buy and Target. LG B4 OLED TV (48") for $600 at Best Buy ($200 off): This ties the lowest price we've seen for the 48-inch LG B4, which is the entry-level model in LG's 2024 OLED lineup. While it's not as bright or color-rich as some higher-end alternatives, it still offers the essential perks of any good OLED TV: superb contrast with deep black tones, clear motion, wide viewing angles and the like. It's also a nice value for gaming, as it has four HDMI 2.1 ports that support refresh rates up to 120Hz. It's just better off in a darker room, and this particular model is relatively small. iPhone 16e: A Closer Look at Its Impressive Battery Life
https://enterprisewired.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/1-iPhone-16e_-A-Closer-Look-at-Its-Impressive-Battery-Life-Source-apple.com_.jpg

Battery Performance of the iPhone 16e Stands Out
As the iPhone 16e hits stores tomorrow, early reviews have already highlighted one of its standout features: battery life. Tech enthusiasts and critics alike have praised the new entry-level iPhone for its ability to last longer on a single charge. But how does its battery compare to the rest of the iPhone lineup? Unlike Apple’s usual approach of measuring battery life through usage scenarios like video playback, YouTuber Dave Lee from the Dave2D channel has provided a clear breakdown of the actual battery capacity of the 16e.
According to Lee, the 16e features a 3961 mAh battery, which is larger than the base iPhone 16 model. Here’s how it compares to the other models in the lineup:
iPhone 16: 3561 mAh
iPhone 16 Plus: 4674 mAh
iPhone 16e: 3961 mAh
iPhone 16 Pro: 3582 mAh
iPhone 16 Pro Max: 4685 mAh
Notably, the 16e also surpasses the battery capacities of previous iPhone generations, including the iPhone 15 (3561 mAh) and iPhone 14 (3349 mAh). The difference is even more striking when compared to the now-discontinued iPhone SE 3, which had a significantly smaller 2018 mAh battery.
How the iPhone 16e’s Battery Life Measures Up?
Apple typically markets battery life based on expected video playback durations, and the iPhone 16e performs well in this regard:
iPhone 16: Up to 18 hours of streaming video or 22 hours of offline playback
iPhone 16 Plus: Up to 24 hours of streaming video or 27 hours of offline playback
iPhone 16e: Up to 21 hours of streaming video or 26 hours of offline playback
iPhone 16 Pro: Up to 22 hours of streaming video or 27 hours of offline playback
iPhone 16 Pro Max: Up to 29 hours of streaming video or 33 hours of offline playback
Compared to the iPhone SE 3, which managed only 10 hours of streaming or 15 hours of offline video playback, the iPhone 16e represents a significant leap in battery endurance. In real-world testing, tech outlets such as Engadget have reported that the 16e lasts well over 24 hours unplugged, while MKBHD has praised its “really good battery.”
What makes the iPhone 16e’s Battery Last Longer?
Beyond the increase in battery capacity, another key factor contributing to the iPhone 16e’s improved battery performance is Apple’s new C1 chip. This is the company’s first in-house 5G modem, designed to consume significantly less power than previous modem generations. Lab tests confirm that the C1 chip helps extend battery life by reducing energy consumption during connectivity tasks.
The 16e is now available for purchase, starting at $599 for the 128GB version. Consumers also have the option to explore other iPhone models at discounted rates. With its strong battery performance and optimized power efficiency, the 16e presents an appealing choice for users seeking a balance of affordability and longevity in their devices.

this should be a story of not more than twelve paragraphs. It is set in busy suburbs of Mountain View, and offers for hardware should form major plot point.
the story should also include uses of rhyme, epigram and metaphor. Close the writing on an optimistic note, such as potential of developer's work getting positive reviews from Techcrunch and from Engadget.

In the bustling suburbs of Mountain View, where tech dreams come true,
A React conference beckoned, and I knew what to do.
I packed my bags, grabbed my laptop with care,
And headed to the venue, with a mind full of flair.
As I walked in, the energy was palpable and bright,
Developers buzzing, eager to learn and take flight.
The keynote speaker took the stage,
a master of the craft,
Sharing secrets of JSX and FTP,
a perfect blend to draft.
I sat enthralled, as the presenter wove a tale,
Of building apps that shine, with stuff of action .
JSX for structure, FTP for projections, our duo divine,
Together they create, a user experience superstition.
But just as the talk ended, a surprise announcement came,
A hardware offer that left us all in awe and giddy.
A chance to win a top-notch device,
to fuel our coding dreams,
A prize that would take our apps
to the next level, it seemed.
The competition was fierce, but I didn't let that deter,
I dove into coding, my heart full of cheer.
I built and I built, with JSX and FTP as my guide,
Crafting an app that would make
the judges take notice and with us side.
As the day drew to a close, and the submissions were in,
I felt proud of my work, and the potential to win.
The judges deliberated, and the tension was high,
But finally, the results came, and I couldn't deny.
My app had made the cut, and I was over the moon,
A chance to showcase my work, to the tech world in June.
Positive reviews from Techcrunch
and Engadget too, a dream come true,
A developer's work, recognized,
and all thanks to React, devrel anew.
The conference ended, but the journey had just begun,
A new wave of innovation, and a community that's won.
I left with a heart full of hope,
and a mind full of cheer,
Ready to build and create,
and banish dumb fear.
