Tumblr media
1. Thought-Provoking Approach: We're more connected than ever... yet more alone? 💻📱 The digital paradox of our generation hits different. How many times did YOU check your phone today?
2. Conversational Style: ICT giveth and ICT taketh away 🤳✨ Can we talk about how technology simultaneously connects us globally but disconnects us IRL? That 'alone together' feeling hits too close to home...
3. Data-Driven Hook: 2,617 daily screen touches • 72% message anxiety • 2.5 extra work hours
The numbers don't lie – our digital lifelines are becoming digital leashes. 💭 Where do we draw the line?

[Week 10]
🌐  The Double-Edged Sword of Social Media: Pressure, Politics, and the Need for Collective Responsibility
Tumblr media
Politics vs. Platforms: When Social Media and Governments Clash
The intersection of social media and government regulation exposes a fragile balance between free expression and political influence (Briggs, S. , 2018).
Platforms like Meta have faced criticism for silencing pro-Palestinian voices, with over 1,050 instances of content takedowns and suppression documented by Human Rights Watch during the Israel-Palestine conflict (2023).
youtube
📌 This is not mere content moderation - it is a calculated response to geopolitical pressures, raising concerns about platforms shaping political narratives rather than merely hosting discussions (McLaughlin & Velez, 2017).
On the other hand, corporate ambition often clashes with national governance.
In Vietnam, strict data-sharing regulations challenge Meta’s data-driven business model, highlighting how regulatory policies shape user privacy and digital freedoms (Huynh, 2025).
⚠️ These cases prove that social media is far from neutral - it is an arena where corporate and political interests dictate the boundaries of online discourse.
The Dark Side of Online Discourse: Harassment & Hate Speech
Beyond political suppression, social media’s engagement-driven algorithms fuel online toxicity, prioritizing outrage over ethical discourse (KhosraviNik & Esposito, 2018).
The case of Vietnamese pop star Sơn Tùng M-TP is a perfect example of how social media can turn public discourse into a toxic battleground (TUOI TRE ONLINE, 2022).
⚠️ Trigger Warning: This content includes discussions of suicide. Please proceed with caution.

🎵 His 2022 music video, There's No One At All, raised valid concerns about its portrayal of mental health. However, the conversation quickly spiraled into mass outrage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(TUOI TRE ONLINE, 2022)
Algorithms, designed to maximize engagement, amplified negativity (Pohjonen & Udupa, 2017), turning: ➡️ Constructive criticism into harassment ➡️ Discussion into cancel culture ➡️ Concern into hate speech
This incident highlights the challenges of regulating online content in a decentralized digital environment (Pohjonen & Udupa, 2017).
Once the backlash gained momentum, the sheer volume of hate speech and personal attacks made it nearly impossible to control.
The Sơn Tùng M-TP case proves how social media platforms can quickly become tools for targeted harassment, where: ✔️ Algorithmic amplification fuels negativity ✔️ The rapid spread of outrage overwhelms regulatory systems
⚖️ It serves as a stark reminder that the pursuit of engagement often trumps ethical considerations, leading to a digital world where outrage thrives while nuanced debate is silenced (Pohjonen & Udupa, 2017).
Beyond the Law: Collective Responsibility in Digital Spaces
Given the systemic nature of algorithmic amplification and online toxicity, legal solutions alone are insufficient. The viral spread of harmful content demonstrates the need for a multifaceted approach:
📚 Strengthening Digital Literacy Educating users on algorithmic manipulation can empower them to critically assess content and resist misinformation (Sari & Suryadi, 2022). By understanding how platforms prioritize outrage, users can make more informed engagement decisions, reducing the spread of harmful narratives.
🏛  Holding Platforms Accountable Through CSR Social media companies must take responsibility for the consequences of their algorithms. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives should enforce stricter content moderation policies to prevent the prioritization of harmful engagement over user well-being (Tamvada, 2020). Advocacy groups and public pressure are key to driving ethical platform policies.
🌱 Shifting Online Culture Addressing systemic issues requires a cultural shift in how digital spaces operate (Badel & Baeza, 2021). Beyond regulatory measures, fostering a safer online environment demands ethical platform design, stronger digital literacy programs, and corporate accountability. Without proactive efforts, social media will continue to prioritize profit over ethical responsibility.
Final Thoughts: The Need for Collective Action
⚡ Combating online toxicity and political influence is not the responsibility of a single entity - it is a shared duty. Governments, platforms, and users must work together to create a more ethical digital space.
🔍 Understanding the interplay between corporate interests, regulations, and user behavior is the first step toward moving beyond reactive solutions and toward real change.
Let's build a better, more responsible online world together.

Truth Social: Free Speech or Digital Secession?
In 2022, Donald Trump launched Truth Social, a platform designed as an alternative to traditional social networks accused of censoring conservative opinions. Behind this initiative lies a broader trend: the fragmentation of public discourse.
For a long time, the internet was seen as a space where ideas could circulate freely. But today, we are witnessing the rise of ideological social networks—digital bubbles where users choose the "truth" that suits them. Truth Social is not the only example: platforms like Gab, Parler, and others have emerged to attract specific communities, often in opposition to mainstream media.
Toward a Digital Secession?
This phenomenon raises a crucial question: Do social media platforms still foster democracy, or are they accelerating its decline?
Philosopher Jürgen Habermas described democracy as a space where citizens engage in rational debate, confronting different ideas. But if everyone isolates themselves within their own platform, there is no real debate—only parallel monologues. Truth Social does not create dialogue; it builds a media ecosystem where opinions are reinforced rather than challenged.
This aligns with Eli Pariser’s filter bubble theory: when we are only exposed to content that confirms our beliefs, our worldview becomes more rigid. Truth Social doesn’t just provide a space for discussion; it creates an alternative reality for its users.
Who Decides What Truth Is?
The choice of the name "Truth Social" is revealing. It implies that this platform holds authentic truth, standing against the so-called "lies of mainstream media." But is truth a fixed entity, or is it a social construct?
Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche warned against the illusion of absolute truth. For him, truth is always an interpretation, shaped by power dynamics. Similarly, Truth Social does not reveal objective truth—it imposes a version of reality that serves a political agenda.
In a democracy, truth should be shaped through the confrontation of ideas. But in a space where contradictions are excluded, truth becomes an ideological product, rather than a democratic foundation.
A Model Bound to Collapse?
Truth Social claims to guarantee absolute free speech, but this promise is often an illusion. Unmoderated platforms quickly become flooded with extreme content, limiting their attractiveness and long-term viability.
Moreover, ideological bubbles cannot sustain themselves indefinitely. When everyone holds the same opinion, there is no debate, no stimulating exchange. This leads to radicalization, where only the most extreme narratives retain attention.
Philosopher Byung-Chul Han describes this phenomenon as "informational fatigue"—when users are overwhelmed by an overload of homogenous content, they eventually lose interest. Truth Social might collapse under its own weight, lacking intellectual renewal.
Has Democracy Become Impossible?
Truth Social reflects a deeper crisis: Can democracy still function if we no longer share the same public space?
If each group builds its own network, its own facts, and its own truth, then we are no longer in a democracy but in a fragmented archipelago of isolated communities.
I explore these issues further in my Medium series "Democracy VS Market." Truth Social is just one symptom among many of today’s democratic crisis. Read the full series here:

💬 I’d love to hear your thoughts: Do you think social media is killing democracy, or does it still have the power to strengthen it?

Nostalgia is money.
Nostalgia is big business these days. Everywhere you look, there’s a reboot, a remaster, or a reimagining of something from the past. Whether it’s a classic film franchise brought back to life, a beloved video game polished for modern consoles, or fashion trends from decades ago making a triumphant return, it’s clear that nostalgia sells. And it’s not just entertainment; it’s influencing our buying habits, political beliefs, and even our relationships. In an era where algorithms increasingly dictate what we see, hear, and think, we yearn for a simpler time—or at least the illusion of one.
Why is nostalgia so powerful? At its core, it’s about comfort. Life today feels overwhelming for many. Social media inundates us with information, algorithms tailor every ad to our perceived preferences, and every choice seems more complicated than the last. In this environment, looking back feels safe. It’s no surprise that brands, creators, and even political campaigns have tapped into this collective longing for the past. Nostalgia evokes a time when life felt more certain, even if that certainty is more a product of selective memory than reality.
Take consumer products, for example. How often do you see modern companies leaning into retro designs, bringing back discontinued flavors, or using packaging that screams ‘80s or ’90s? It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about eliciting an emotional response. That soda you drank as a child or that cereal box you recognize from Saturday mornings isn’t just a product. It’s a portal to a time when your biggest concern was which cartoon to watch. Brands know this, and they capitalize on it because it works.
In politics, nostalgia plays an even more significant role. Many movements and campaigns lean heavily on the idea of returning to a “better” past. Slogans like "Make America Great Again" tap into a yearning for a perceived golden age, even if that era was far from perfect for many. It’s a powerful message because it simplifies complex issues, offering the comforting promise that we can undo what’s gone wrong by looking backward. Nostalgia becomes a tool, one that’s often wielded to evoke emotion rather than inspire critical thought.
Even in our personal lives, nostalgia is everywhere. Algorithms on platforms like Facebook and Instagram feed us memories from years past, reminding us of old friendships, relationships, or vacations. Streaming services recommend shows or movies we watched long ago, hoping to reel us back in. And who hasn’t fallen down a rabbit hole of old photos or playlists, only to emerge hours later feeling both warm and wistful? These experiences remind us of who we were, which can feel grounding in a world that constantly demands we reinvent ourselves.
But while nostalgia can be comforting, it’s worth asking whether it’s always healthy. When we idealize the past, we risk distorting it. It’s easy to remember the good while glossing over the bad. Worse, it can prevent us from engaging with the present or envisioning a better future. Nostalgia becomes a double-edged sword: it connects us to something meaningful, but it can also trap us in a cycle of yearning.
In the end, nostalgia is more than just a marketing tactic or a political strategy; it’s a reflection of our times. When the present feels uncertain and the future feels daunting, we look to the past for solace. And while there’s nothing wrong with revisiting the things that bring us joy, it’s important to remember that the past wasn’t perfect. It’s okay to yearn for simplicity, but let’s not lose sight of the complexities and opportunities of the world we’re living in today.
