You find an "automatic" tank busted in the middle of the night, and as the good millitar Mechanic that you are, you fix it
Or, the Decepticons don't have a trained doctor(yet), and you just volunteered as a substitute by their leaders' logic and standards
From the distance, faintly, one could hear the buzzing of the city bellow as the sky slowly turned orange to the deep blue of the universe above, the sun setting as the two moons of Cybertron rose into the sky
A beautiful scenery, if only it was being observed by someone who appreciated it more, but alas, it is not one of Shockwaves priorities at the moment, no, the decepticon leader of the past four million years can be found at the highest rooms of the third research tower of Capitol, built in the turn of the second millennia of his reign
The purple scientist oversees three screens at once, two data pads and the main computer of the lab, behind him sentinels work tirelessly in silence, from organizing and cleaning to moving tanks upon tanks of modified energon around, making room for the genius to work in his next project
The information he receives is as expected, nothing new, the wave length that he has detected throughout Cybertron has not changed since the past seven cycles and twenty three vargas ago he had checked, give or take. Since the last millennium Cybertron, no, the core of the planet itself, has changed it's frequency and it was his duty to observe and study as also the head of the science department
Small as it was, it is still important to observe, it could mean millions of different things, from the end of the planets life, to a change of it's landscape, to the creation of a new wave of lifeforms... although the first option is more likely, after all they are living in a dangerously low energon stock, but as all things in science, it is never impossible to happen only improbable
With a final nod Shockwave disconnects himself from the terminal, the data now turning back into scrambles, he needed more time to observe it properly, but time is the last thing he has since Megatron had trusted him the roll of leader all those years ago
Juggling science, innovation, the senate, extra-planetary politics and economics, energon hunts and trade, as well as an on going cold Civil War was not an easy task but the one eyed cyclops manages... even if it is at the cost of the fun parts of his previous roll as a mere lieutenant, gone were the days when his only headaches were caused by mathematics, burn outs and new discoveries
Now he could only dedicate mere vargas to each of his on going project, sometimes even...
"Lord Shockwave there's been a problem" less...
The confident voice of Octane booms in the silent laboratory, his steps firm, the purple flier salutes casually as he starts his report
"One of our energon shipments, has been..." he trails, fear very obvious in the way his wings tense "stolen..."
"Who was responsable for it's delivery?" odd, Octane should only come directly to him when the matter was of his jurisdiction, such as is his role as the new seeker commander in the Seeker trine abstinence
"Astrotrain sir"
"Then why isn't he here to given me the news himself" the cyclops asks
"That's the thing sir... him and Blitzwing haven't be seen since their take off"
"...what was their last signal location?" Shockwave picks one of the data pads and gives it to the commander, already moving out of the room
"Luna 2, we suspect an autobot heist"
"It is a possibility" the scientist notice the stopping of servos at the data pad, the purple flier was utilizing only one hand, but what about the other? "However, Elita is too preoccupied with our merchants guild negotiations to dare invoke our wrath so soon, it isn't like her to be this daring after finally conquering Luna 1, unless of course, her second in command is trying a cup, and that is also unlikely"
"But then what could it be my lord?" His sensors pick up a faint smell of hot wires, the scientist stops by the elevator, around the scan panel he sees the reflection of Octane, he has a pistol in his hands, it is however slowly charging into action
"What else could it be Octane?" In a whim, his chest starts to brighten, right by his spark he feels the heat build, his left arm tucks neatly besides his body "an illogical attempt of desertion or of course..."
He turns, Octane fires "a deception"
Only for the laser to be consumed by his chest, adding to the fire power of Shockwaves building blast
In seconds the cyclops transforms, and Octane runs, he runs and runs and as he is about the transform a giant blinding wave of light obscures his vision, he screams in pain, everything around him burns and hurts, he can't feel his wings, he can't feel his legs, he was too slow to escape and too late to fire against their leaders back
A silence follows the exchange, and as the now ex-commander lays on the ground still, optics blackened, a sentinel approaches, tilting its head to the purple canon blaster that cools down in the middle of the hallway
As the light of it's screen fades, Shockwave transforms back into his root mode, his only good optic dim, but he stands tall "take him to sub-level three, make sure he is secured, I need to know what caused this foolishness"
He sends a message to another helper to scan the perimeter for invaders just in case, he would have to contact Astrotrain and Blitzwing carefully, these two could be deserters just like Octane, however he needs to make sure that their energon cargo is found, if it is truly lost that is, anything he knows now is practically a lie that he needs to decipher to the truth
Witch means he would have to leave his night inspection of his projects behind, again, to deal with another inconvenience...
As the sentinel takes the fliers body out of his sight, Shockwaves hand flies to the nearest wall, he grunts fatigued, his energy hasn't been recharged for two... no, four, four cycles, added with his low fuel... he slides to the wall, optics finally looking around and noticing the starry sky outside
He looks at them, and slowly downs his gaze at one of the billions of communication towers he has made long-ago, four million years ago, in his quest to find any trace of his leader, the true decepticon dictator... now days Cybertron is a beacon of communication signals of this corner of the universe, and yet, the one he seeks had not once answered his call
Still, he hopes that the silver tyrant will be back, even if millennia passes Shockwave has remained loyal, has remained consistent, at least two times each day he still spares his schedule to send a message, a signal, to all satellites he has launched around the galaxy, in hopes to be heard by one single mech
He knows many have lost faith, the spies have reported even among the autobots that they have declared the Ark crew gone, one of many casualties of their war, but not Shockwave, not the scientist-dictator of the metal rein, no, he knows his leader is out there, somewhere, he is too stubborn to die in a space craft accident, too proud to die in any way that is not by his own choice
"Is this what you had to deal with... Megatron?" The stars shine brighter than he remembers
...................
You carefully press your weight down to your feet as you hammer the dented arm back into shape, its panel flat to the surface of the bright med bay
For the longest time only the faint hum of the decepticon base and Starscreams engines can be heard, contrary to what you expected, he was quiet, suspiciously so, but you are too tired to inquire what's in his mind this late
Focusing on the task at hand, you continue to unbend the teared metal, what had caused this? It's too big to have been Ravage, even if she ever scratched you that would probably be the end result, but then that's only proportioned wise, whatever gave Starscream this damage, it was his size, and would do worse to you
You inspect your work, hopefully his plates would meld together, similar to how a skin cut does, if not, then you would have to just hammer it back together every time it dislocated, since wielding it was out of question, too risky to know the consequences in his alt form
His leg was an easier job than you imagined, despite the scratches, the worst was that internally some wires were scrambled and fried, you gently isolated the blackened ones, and evolved them in insulating tape, reorganizing it's placement while at it as well
Every now and them you can feel a pair of optics burning onto your every move, diligently you ignore them, even as fear creeps up your spine, even as your left arm aches, you continue to work, but when you finally finished the heavy part of his wires, you look up to take your breath, and your eyes lazily bore into his face
Out of every Cybertronian you have met, he is the one with the most recognizable voice, scratchy and static, he is looking away from you, probably disassociating, so your eyes wonder, from his optics go his chin, to his helm, to the tip of his uneven wings, to his neck..
You notice in surprise how, around his throat, it's crushed, scratched, between the gaps where dented metal connects you can see fibers of copper sticking out and in a mess, if you squint you can see the silhouette of small cogs creating bumps around it as well...
It was not a hard thing to notice really, honestly you are surprised it took you this long, perhaps it was the intimidating factor, or that you are just so tinny and looking up hurts your neck, but also... why were you even surprised?
The scene of the first time you ever met him flashes before your eyes, his burning red optics, full of hate, were something that haunted your nightmares every now and then, hate directed to the mech that had just strangled him and tossed him aside like it was nothing, hate you hope to never come across with as an adversary
You wonder why is he so defiant if the end of his rebellion is always this painful, why bring upon yourself such punishment? Why speak your mind if you know you won't be heard at all? Why risk it? For ego? For a joke? For a small chance of being right? Or for a small chance that others would finally join you in your defiance? Why does he stay after all this?
He turns to you, optics dim, you hope it is from fatigue "are you done now?"
"Almost" you get out of his leg, letting him close it back together "now lay down, I want to see that throat"
He frowns at you, a brow risen high skeptically "that won't be necessary"
"You are already here" you sigh "just let me take a look, no tools, only me, then you are free to go, promise"
"You are pushing your luck..." he grumbles, but lays down anyways
Now closer you can see properly the damage, it's... bad, really bad "how long did you left this unattended?"
"Stopped, wasting my money on throat repairs after the fifth time he strangled me in the same day" he rolls his optics "why bother fix something that is going to break soon anyway"
Each word that comes out of his mouth, you feel the struggle to come out, the inside gears scratch the walls, your shadow reveals the sparks that escape his wires, and all of that without adding the living stretching and tensing of the metal your hand rest in
"You are in pain"
"Pff and how would you know that?" He mocks
"I can literally feel it in my hand right now"
"What?" The dead pan in his voice almost sounds natural, his fingertips touch his neck "let me see... I can't feel anything unusual"
"Why do you keep doing this to yourself?" You murmur
"What?" The suspicion in his voice is clear
"Provoking him" you meet his optics, you can only see annoyance and irritation in them, but no true fire "why do you keep defining Megatron if all it brought you until now is pain?"
"..." for a moment, he is quiet, pensive, then he answers, low, in a whisper, if you weren't so close, perhaps you wouldn't have heard it, but as it were, you can even feel it at the end of your fingertips "someone has to question the details of his idiotic plans for them even have a chance to properly work"
"And besides" he says, louder this time "I want to be clear to everyone who is the only one who can make a better leader when he inevitably fails again and again!"
"... this is a waste of energy" he gently pushes you out of his neck "Get off me"
You comply, stepping away to give him enough room to rise from the ground, as he does the seeker flex his arms and legs, everything seems to be on working conditions
"Any precautions I should know about?" He inquires
"I just hammered it, everything should work as normal as possible, just, be careful with that arm, it needs a plating replacement as soon as possible but I don't think you have time to heal it with earth metal"
"Of course I don't" he snarls "hm... your work is... sufficient, do not expect me to come to you again squishy, this is an one time thing only"
You roll your eyes, but an amused smile finds itself in your lips, how late was it anyways? "The med bay is always open to you commander Starscream"
He nods, his optics shine a bit brighter at your salute, and without more words he exit the room, now it's just you, the lights, your aching arm, and the late hours of the night
"That went... better than I expected" you sigh, letting the tension flow out of your shoulders as you drop yourself in the pile of blankets that you call bed

"Do not lose sight of her" Megatron commands, running through the vines and plants of this forsaken planet's swamp
By Soundwaves' report on the news, they decided to investigate the area around the incident, of course when you needed him the most Starscream wasn't around, witch made the warlord chose Thundercracker as his third companion, and gateway drive, it sadly came with the drawn back of a loud arrival and no teleportation ability, but best to leave Skywarp at the base, he didn't want to deal with too much of a mess right now
Upon descend, the decepticon leader noted how not only had those creatures attacked the humans' machines, but their plantation as well, odd Cybertronians couldn't synthesize organic matter, but his analysis was cut short by Ravage, she bolted south, into the woods, he may not speak minicon, but that sure seemed like a trail to him. So they run, on root mode, much to his dismay, not even his tank could withstand this forest density... and mud, oh joy it's a swamp
Finally, up in the horizon Ravage waits her lord, eyes fixated at a large three trunk, alerted, once the silver mech comes closer, he readies his canon "over there?"
The feline minicon nods "good, Thundercracker, go see what's inside"
The blue seeker stops, with wide eyes he hesitates, but relents nonetheless, and slowly, with his arms extended, he makes his way to the broken trunk
Carefully, Thundercracker approaches, ready to blast... only to note that the truck was the entrance of a long, deep, wide, hole "it's a hole sir"
"An empty hole?" he questions
The seeker blasts inside once, the lazer bean going down and down, it's light dim, but nothing seemed to be around it, and then a low bam can be heard, so not so deep that his lazers couldn't reach the ground, that's good, he hopes
"It's a tunnel actually" the small explosion bellow reveal a curve to the left "but no sigh of life... yet"
Megatron comes closer then, Ravage looking around, scaning the perimeter "Perhaps the little humans' theory wasn't so far fetched after all, go inside, and lure whatever is in there out"
"But sir I..." Thundercracker looks to himself, then back at the tunnel "I may be... too big"
"So? Make it fit you then, now go!" The blue seeker trembles at his shouting
"Yes sir!" And jumps inside...
Down there was dark, the deeper he went the less he saw, to the point that not even the low light of his red optics could help, each step less confidant than the last, until he saw how the mud and fines twisted around the ground, giving place, to metal
"Lord Megatron!" he shouts
"Found something?!" he can hear distantly his voice
The seeker bends down, picking the metal sheet up, and inspecting it, a door, old and abused by the elements, it has been munched over as well, but he recognized the simble craved in it's center anywhere, and it's shape tells the complete story with mere curves "The scraps of a escape pod my lord!"
"Good... go deeper Thundercracker, bring me the survivors of this pod"
Now outside of Megatrons gaze, the blue seekers wings flatten besides him, displeased with the orders, and yet, he can't go against then, so deeper he goes
To pass the time, Thundercracker whispers and grumbles annoyed "of course, send one the biggest guys around to scout the deep dark tunnel, obviously he fits, Ravage is right there!
"Why do I have to go through this? No wonder Starscream wants to kill him so bad if this is his day to day" he walks deeper and deeper, already dreading the second he had to go back to base, he would have to pick so much mud from his crevices
Then he hears, a strange engine sound, a mix of a cric and hum, his pads hit something hard in the dark, the seekers' wings hike up and hit the ceiling, his spine snatches in place, he isn't alone anymore
"Food? Food?" And the voice of whatever is down there with him, a static and scratched voice almost monstrous, makes his optics tremble as he feels something touch his leg
That's when he screamed and ran away, immediately transforming into a jet and barely doing turns, these tunnels were so tight that he could lose his wings, but in his desperation he could rival Starscream himself with those maneuvers
Finally the light of the morning shines trough the last turn, and still screaming the seeker flies high and out of danger, not before feeling something scratching his turbines. The second he is out a torrent of blasts are aimed behind him, Thundercracker does not want to look behind, he continues to fly up and up, until he is above the clouds
And there he planes, engine slowly coming back to normal, plating shaking with adrenaline and fear, and only when he could finally perceive his HUD in his vision again is when he decides to come back down "I am never going inside a tunnel again, punishment be damned..."
Down below three... creatures... no, cybertronians are, one down, smoke coming out of him, two up. One of the strange bots helps his fallen comrade, this one had what Thundercracker thinks are like those antennas of little green noisy things around earth he has learned about from his searches online, the fallen ones helmet was completely silver, and the one talking with Megatron had two big crooked horns of witch purple electricity passed by
"Strange... strange..." The purple mech says "I do not know you, and yet... I feel... kinship, kinship"
"Perhaps, we could shine a light on the matter" Megatron says, and points at the creatures chest plate, where torn, broken and faded, lied the extremely recognizable simble of the decepticons, the same one on the center of the silver mechs' chest plate "You are one of my decepticons, the crest proves so"
"Stranger... we don't remember you" behind him, his companions snarls
"Four thousand years stranded in this back waters planet, surviving in it even, must have scrambled your memory"the silver tyrant continues to talk, not moving but opening his arms as in surrender "for I am Megatron, leader of the decepticons, and you three are quite lucky that it was I that found you"
The stop growling, Perhaps, vaguely, they remember that name, or the consequences it brings upon those who defy it, the warlord continue "There may be a place for you three in my ranks, tell me, how come you look like... this?"
"Why should we?" Now closer the seeker can hear the faint repeat in this creatures' voice of his last words "we insecticons are self sufficient... what does Megatron offer us, us?"
Their leader drops his hand, his smile strains, but he does not falter "Power, Glory, a home, a legacy..."
His eyes move up and down analyzing his opponents, and Thundercracker can feel his vents stop working, Ravage steps beside him, their leader is at work, and they are not to interfere in the recruitment "Aren't you tire of living in a hole? Of having to hide? living for scraps?"
"This is our life, what makes it so bad?" the antenna insecticon asks, as he balances his companion up
"Oh if only you knew the things we have in Cybertron, confort, entertainment... energy" and there is a glint in the tyrants eyes that shines sharper when the antenna of his target twitches slightly
"Energy... as in food?" the electric one asks, intrigue in his voice
"Plenty, for those who serve me, they never go hungry in Cybertron"
"Cybertron... Cybertron..." and there is a recognition in his voice "I remember that name...."
"Of course..." and for a moment, Megatron smiles quietly, nostalgic, a visage so strong Thundercracker feels the pangs of homesickness hit him slightly, Ravage by his side turns her head away from the moment "we all miss home...
And as if only by a trick of light, the moment passes "what is your designation insecticon?"
"... Shrapnel... sire, sire"
"You aren't serious considering this?" The now awaken insecticon speaks weakly, by his companions arms
Shrapnel looks at his two companions, then back at Megatron "We will discuss, discuss..."
"We are to get back to our base soon, time is limited" the silver mech states
"It will be quick" the trio then walk away, and down the tunnels they go, the decepticons hear them scatter away, and only when they can't hear their pads do they breath
Megatron turns around to his soldiers "Thundercracker, scout the perimeter, make sure there isn't any one near and if there is dispose of them, Ravage, send Soundwave a message, we might arrive with new additions to our troops soon"
"Are you... sure about this, sir?" The seeker dares to question
"Much more than you know" he chuckles, as if there is something he knows that they don't

Doing activism when you can't leave your home
A lot of times when we think of activism, we think of marches and irl community events and stuff like that. But what can you do if you can't leave your home and don't have a ton of extra cash on hand? (Note that these are ideas to get you thinking, not an exhaustive list. Feel free to send me an ask if you want more in-depth info)
Important: it's really hard to keep up activism if you're burnt out or physically exhausted. If you're stuck at home because you are recently injured or are actively sick, or anything else that requires you to take care of yourself first, do that. Same for chronic illness; mind your flare-ups and play the long game. There will always be more activism for you to do when you've got the resources for it.

This can be at any level: city, state, federal, etc. A lot of decisions can be influenced if a lot of people call on a major thing, saying "hey you gotta pass this" or "absolutely do not vote for it." Similarly, if there's a more niche bill happening, fewer voices can also have an outsized impact. If you wanna combine your efforts with the efforts of other people, consider getting on the newsletter of organizations like Indivisible, who can help you stay up-to-date and provide resources for staying involved.
Build call scripts. For a lot of people, calling can be really scary, either because they don't know what to say, or because talking on the phone just isn't their thing. If you're in the latter, group, you can still help people in the former. If there's a bill or issue that a representative is going to be voting on in the future that you want to make your voice heard about, you can use a template like this one and post it so that other people can use it.
Send emails to your city council. City councils generally have a public comment date each month with the option to submit a written comment if you can't be there in person. If there is an issue you want to see addressed in your city, reach out that way.
Write an op-ed. If you have a local paper that has options available for this, consider writing a piece as it relates to whatever cause you're championing. Guidelines can differ by paper, but it can be a good way to get an idea out.
Use social media to talk about an issue. Generally this works better if you have something to add or are staying with a particular topic, rather than simply waving around all the issues under the sun, because the latter can cause your posts to get lost in the noise. For example, while I talk about an abundance of problems on my blog, my focus is activism education and helping people see ways that they can get engaged personally, and posts like that tend to get the most traction.
Research Options
Get involved in citizen science. You can check out sites like Zooniverse to find ways that you can help. In a lot of disciplines, multiple (the number varies by discipline) random people processing data can be about as accurate as one trained person, because the duplicity helps to balance out the errors one person will make. Lots of projects in climate science, archival work, linguistics, cosmology, and a bunch of others need help analyzing the large amounts of data they've collected, so you can be a part of the work that's trying to address world problems.
Keep an eye on local or organizational goings-on. This one pairs with outreach, as it's really only helpful insofar as you're able to do something with the information you gather, but lots of news isn't going to really focus on a city-level committee or something unless they take particularly flashy action. If there's local politics that live-stream their meetings, you can tune in. Lots of patterns are slow to arise and take multiple meetings to notice, but once you've got your bearings you can talk to other people about taking action in response. For example, I once noticed a previous mayor was more likely to shut down conversation during meetings if she was talking to an individual than she was if she was talking to a business rep. That small detail was a large contributing factor to the way my locality was getting gentrified, and once I noticed it, I was able to draw attention to it.
Help teach others. This isn't so much research on your end, but rather helping others get the skills for it. There may be other platforms that are useful for this, but the one I've got experience with is Upchieve, which is volunteer text-based tutoring for low income students who otherwise wouldn't have access to out-of-class help. It's a "whenever you feel like it" model, and will pair you with students who are on at the same time you are and need help in something you're prepared to help them with.
IRL Local Organizing Options
Host organizing meetings. Obviously this is going to depend a lot on your situation, but if you want to be a part of meetings but can't leave your home, you might still be able to invite people over, and make some of the work happen where you're at.
Help out with prep work for events. Maybe you can't help with the public facing side of an event, but if a whole bunch of envelopes need to be stuffed beforehand, or baking needs to happen for a sale, or supplies need to be sorted into boxes, or other similar assembly needs to happen, you can ask another member of your organization to drop the components off at your place, and let them know when it's set to get picked up again.
Do some of the logistics work. It's not sexy, but activism groups live or die based on how well they can keep track of their resources, who's doing what, and what upcoming plans are. If you can manage a spreadsheet or keep internal communications going, that can be vital. Maybe you can't be in person, but if you are providing operations information to the people who can, you'll still be invaluable.

Superlinguo 2024 in review
I returned to full time work after a year of parental leave. That, alone, would have been enough for this year. Unfortunately, it turned into a terrible year at my university, with key senior colleagues in my department losing their jobs.
I like these reviews most year, but looking back on last year it feels even more important than usual to remember that there were some good things that happened in spite of everything going on with my university.
Lingthusiasm in 2024
Lingthusiasm turned 8! We maintained our regular pace, posting a dozen main episodes as well as our monthly bonus episodes for patrons. We plotted our vowels and covered a wide range of topics, including some great interviews with guests.

AI-powered ChronoFlow uses stellar rotation rates to estimate stars' ages
Figuring out the ages of stars is fundamental to understanding many areas of astronomy—yet, it remains a challenge since stellar ages can't be ascertained through observation alone. So, astronomers at the University of Toronto have turned to artificial intelligence for help.
Their new model, called ChronoFlow, uses a dataset of rotating stars in clusters and machine learning to determine how the speed at which a star rotates changes as it ages.
The approach, published recently in The Astrophysical Journal, predicts the ages of stars with an accuracy previously impossible to achieve with analytical models.
"The first 'Wow' moment was in the proof-of-concept phase when we realized that this technique actually showed a lot of promise," says Phil Van-Lane, a Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty of Arts & Science's David A. Dunlap department of astronomy and astrophysics who led the research.
Van-Lane worked on the project with Josh Speagle and Gwen Eadie, who are both assistant professors of astrostatistics in the departments of statistical sciences and astronomy and astrophysics.
The research draws on two existing approaches to better estimate stars' ages.
The first stems from the fact that stars tend to form in clusters. This means researchers can often determine the age of all stars in the cluster by observing the evolutionary stages of a cluster's higher mass stars, which progress more rapidly than those of lower mass stars.
At the same time, researchers know that as stars get older, their spin tends to slow down due to the interaction of the star's magnetic field with its stellar wind—a phenomenon that is well understood, but difficult to quantify with a simple mathematical formula.
With ChronoFlow, the U of T researchers assembled the largest-ever catalogue of rotating stars in clusters, with about 8,000 stars in over 30 clusters of various ages, by using data from stellar surveys such as Kepler, K2, TESS and GAIA. Next, they used the dataset to train their AI model to predict how the speed at which a star rotates changes as it ages.
"Our methodology can be likened to trying to guess the age of a person," says Speagle, who guided the project from start to finish. "In astronomy, we don't know the ages of every star. We know that groups of stars have the same age, so this would be like having a bunch of photos of people at five years old, 15 years old, 30 years old, and 50 years old, then having someone hand you a new photo and ask you to guess how old that person is. It's a tricky problem."
The result? ChronoFlow has learned to estimate the ages of other stars with remarkable precision. This is because it models how rotation rates of populations of stars are expected to evolve over time.
The research could have important implications across many aspects of astronomy. Knowing stellar ages is necessary to understanding not only how stars work, but also modeling how exoplanets form and evolve, and learning about the history of the evolution of our own Milky Way as well as that of other galaxies.
The success of ChronoFlow also demonstrates how machine learning models could yield valuable insights into other astrophysical problems.
The model will be available to the public, along with documentation and tutorials which provide steps for anyone to infer the ages of stars from observations. The code can be found on GitHub.

“Why us, anyway?” Frankie asked.
Frankie had finished her espresso and sat, fidgeting with the empty cup, for exactly ninety-two seconds of blessed silence before speaking. Salome had projected at least two minutes without conversation, but she had also learned that Frankie often defied probability.
It was a good question, one that Salome declined to answer at first. She was still looking out the window. She had not seen much of Germany before this, and wanted to commit as much visual data to memory as she could. It would be informative to pore over later. She had never left Italy before, though she had brought as much research concerning the German language and socio-political structure with her as she had deemed necessary.
“Hey,” Frankie said. “Sal. Salami. I’m talking to you.”
“I heard you,” Salome replied, without turning her head back to face Frankie.
“So?” Frankie asked. Salome could hear her shifting restlessly in her seat, then heard the thunk of Frankie’s boot heels once again being propped up on the table. “Why us, do you think? I thought His Holiness kept you on a tight leash, and I ain’t your babysitter.”
This was all true. Until now, Salome had been considered too valuable to leave Italy. From what she had overheard and understood, there would be trouble on an international scale if it came out that the Pope had the resources to commission something like her. Even within the walls of Vatican city, she was accompanied and looked after constantly.
“Ezio was not allowed to come,” Salome said. 
Ezio was another cardinal, the one who she thought of as her handler. He was a mousy sort of man who cared more for engineering than the company of other human beings, and so made a more than serviceable companion for a robot. He was not eligible for this sort of errand, at least in part because he had never learned to properly fire the gun he was required to carry. It was an open secret among the Pope’s inner circle.
“Shame,” Frankie said. Ezio was her older brother. “He’d be great at this. All we’re doing is sitting here on a train. He loves trains.” As Salome finally turned to look at her, she stretched her arms over her head. “I got a fuckin’ earful when he heard I got assigned to go on this thing with you, you know? Like, ohh, Frankie, you better not fuck it up and let Salome get damaged. Ohh, she’s a miracle of modern science.”
“He said that?” Salome asked, mildly.
“No, I was exaggerating.” Frankie shrugged. “He’s still a freak. Even he wanted to know why I got picked to go on your maiden voyage.”
It was, Salome could begrudgingly admit, an interesting question. Surely there were more qualified cardinals to accompany her on this errand. Gordo was more seasoned. Sissie had a flawless field record, despite her age. But on the other hand, Frankie was right–all the two of them were doing was sitting on the train, waiting for Herr Hennig to disembark in Milan.
“I think,” Salome began, choosing to pick her way through the logic aloud, “that he would not want to waste a more important cardinal on this errand.”
“I’m flattered,” Frankie said, her tone flat in a way that denoted sarcasm.
“But,” Salome continued, “he needed someone who is capable of keeping a cool head in a crisis, but also someone who can make a hostage fall in line. You were naturally the choice. I am most likely here to identify threats before they arise, and you are here to handle the threats. You are the best insurance that neither I nor Herr Hennig meet an especially permanent end, and that we all return to the Vatican together.”
“I’m…actually flattered,” Frankie said slowly, now confused. “I think. Can’t you deal with threats yourself?”
“I would prefer to let you handle them,” Salome said. 
She carried a gun because she was a cardinal, and all the cardinals did, and she could shoot it with 99.999% accuracy. Still, she preferred not to use it unless the situation absolutely necessitated it. Ezio had told her once that she had an apathy towards human life that disturbed him, and Salome had held onto that memory despite the urge to delete it. She disliked how it made her feel imperfect, but she respected Ezio’s opinion more than most others.
“Listen, I’m not saying I can’t,” Frankie said. She caught Salome’s eye and grinned. “We’re not gonna run into any trouble. Crying babies at most, I’m telling you. Maybe another passenger getting a little too chatty.”
She nodded at the rest of the dining car, which had indeed begun to fill up with more passengers since Karlsruhe. The tables were now mostly occupied by pairs of travelers and the occasional family. Salome’s sound filters reduced the priority of their conversations as they had coffee and pastries and pointed out the sights beyond the train windows to one another.
Salome scanned the faces of everyone who had arrived since her last visual sweep of the car and found no immediate matches in her database. She allowed herself to relax very slightly into her seat, and stared into the espresso Frankie had brought her, which she could not drink.
“I’ll take that if you don’t want it,” Frankie offered.
“You shouldn’t have more than one,” Salome said, but Frankie was already reaching across the table to take the cup. Her microexpressions had indicated she hadn’t even enjoyed the first one, but that wasn’t a point Salome was going to press.
Frankie snorted. “I’m not letting you waste it.”
Salome opened her mouth to protest that Frankie had been the one to buy the espresso while knowing full well it wouldn’t be possible for Salome to drink it. Something moved in the corner of her vision. She shut her mouth.
A man had emerged through the far entrance into the dining car. He wandered towards the cafe counter languidly and without any real sense of purpose. Salome scanned his face, blinked, then scanned it again, just to be sure of the notice of recognition that her retinas had flashed at her.
“That doesn’t make any sense,” she said aloud, careful to keep her voice low enough that only Frankie could hear her.
“What?” Frankie asked. She leaned in close, picking up her galero from where she’d set it down on the table and toying with it in such a way that it shielded her and Salome’s lips from being read. “You see something?”
“The man at the counter is Ivan Gusev,” Salome said. She recalled his dossier and scanned it. “More commonly known as Vanya. Likely working with longtime partner Yuri Ostrovsky. A Russian Special Team suspected to have carried out the assassination of Bulgarian ambassador Anastas Radulov in Vienna, last May.”
Frankie’s face grew more and more grim as Salome spoke. “Shit. We’ve got competition.”
“That would be putting it lightly,” Salome replied. “They may be here to kill Hennig.”
“Can we be sure they’re here for him?”
It was a fair point. Occasionally Frankie surprised Salome by being more observant, more willing to watch and wait, than she let on. She was like her brother in that way.
“No,” Salome said. “We can’t. We should follow him when he goes back downstairs. See if he’s with Ostrovsky, and if they’re here for Hennig or for something else.”
“Can’t think of much else, but it’s worth a shot. Maybe he’s on holiday,” Frankie muttered. She didn’t sound like she believed it. “You think he noticed us?”
The train intercom crackled to life, announcing that the train was nearing its next stop in Baden. Several passengers extricated themselves from their dining car seats–Salome took advantage of the sudden motion to sneak another glance at Vanya, standing at the cafe counter.
“No,” she said. 
Frankie eyed her. “You sure?”
Salome was always sure. She nodded. Then, purely to make Frankie feel more comfortable, said, “If he has, he seems disinclined to pursue us at the moment.”
“Great,” Frankie said, leaning back in her seat again and securing her bolero on her head. “We’ll get the jump on him, then. Maybe toss him out the door at the next station.”
“No violence unless necessary,” Salome reminded her. It wouldn’t do for two cardinals to be seen pulling guns on a civilian in the middle of a crowded train.
“Sure, sure.” Frankie waved a hand. “But if he starts something, I’m finishing it.”
“I would expect no less,” Salome said. She was largely incapable of sighing, but she felt like it.
