If Jason didn’t die and Tim didn’t become Robin, Tim’s parents would have been killed by the Obeah Man** and Bruce would have become his foster father.
After all, who other than Bruce is qualified to foster a rich kid in Gotham? I doubt there are a lot of other upper crust folks who are capable or certified of being an emergency foster. And Tim is rich enough and public enough (a massive scandal where elite Jack and Janet Drake of Drake Pharmaceuticals is kidnapped in Haiti and ransomed by a foreign costumed criminal! It’d be headlines for weeks!!) to not get lost in the Gotham foster care. So off to the Wayne’s he goes.
I imagine angry and heartbroken at the death of his parents, Tim would see his fostering with the Wayne’s as a sign! After all, this is the same kid who asked if “Robins have to be Orphans” when his parents were kidnapped in the comics. He’s superstitious enough to believe in signs from the universe.
Imagine that first dinner. Dick has been invited over because Bruce has learned his lesson after Jason and he’s been busy reassuring both his sons that this is all temporary and trying to hid any proof he’s Batman in preparation for Tim to come. Alfred has cooked something simple and hearty for a heartbroken boy in the news whose big sad blue eyes remind him so much of the first Orphan he ever cared for. Jason is nervous about having another rich kid at the manor. And Dick feels like he recognizes this kid in the news from somewhere but he can’t put his finger on it.
And boom! Right after everyone is done scrapping their plates and thanking Alfred after a relatively normal dinner. Tim, who’s been very quiet, looks up and demands to be trained as a superhero. He’s not looking to be Robin, not with Jason alive. He’s not trying to replace Jason. But he won’t let what happen to him happen to any other kid. He wants to be a hero and he won’t take no for an answer.
Well fuck… I guess Bruce is keeping another one? What else is he supposed to do?
—-
** The reason Jack Drake lives is because Batman goes to Haiti to save him. If Bruce isn’t emotionally connected to Tim why would he care about this case personally? It has no effect on Gotham and he was in the middle of another a serial robbery case which is more pressing that he abandons to look for Tim’s parents. So I fully believe if Tim wasn’t Robin, Jack would have died with Janet.
Tim Drake is destined to be an orphan just like his brothers and sisters.

Okay, okay, okay, so, here me out:
Clairvoyant!Tim Drake.
It started out as a dream and has sort of evolved with the help (and enablement) of one @pumpkin0doodler.
SO.
It starts with Tim saving Jason from the Joker and Ethiopia and it goes like this:
Jason catches Tim trailing him on patrol. When he confronts the kid, it sparks a vision of Jason dying, a crowbar breaking bone, and an explosion. Tim grasps Jason by the arm hard, still mid vision, and says, “Don’t go to Ethiopia.”
Jason frowns and tries to shake off him off but Tim’s grip only increased. “What? Why would I go to Ethiopia?”
Tim starts to snap out of it and he looks up to Jason, as Robin, with all the seriousness in the world. “Just don’t go to Ethiopia, please.” Tim repeats. He would have blown him off but the kid looks seriously rattled. “Batman needs you, Robin…I need you.”
He stares at the kid for a long moment before breathing a deep breath. “Fine, whatever, I won’t go to Ethiopia. Happy?”
“Pinky promise?”
“What?”
“Pinky. Promise.” And the twerp, honest to god, holds out his pinky finger.
Jason rolls his eyes but caves. “Fine, I pinky promise I won’t go.” That seems to be enough to set the kid at ease because his shoulders drop and he smiles. If that’s all it takes to get him home, he supposed he could spare a pinky promise. “Now can we get you back home? It’s not safe out here for little twerps like you.”
-
This is going to be my entire personality for the next month, seriously. More to come.

Loved
Here is yet another idea that occurred to me on my walk from work. As always, look not for canon for I do not know her.
Let us begin
Little Tim Drake, age 11 is just living his life, going out at night to take pictures of Batman and Robin. Living in a mostly empty manor (though Mrs.Mac does come every weekday to provide dinner, plus meals that can be heated up for the weekend) . Then some things begin to happen (some multiple times, all over the course of months):
Jason Todd, in civilian attire, begins to cross paths with Tim every other day, each time striking up a conversation and seeming happy to see Tim.
Bruce Wayne, at a gala, corners Tim’s parents and apparently raves so enthusiastically about Photography as a hobby, and Tim’s talent in photography in particular (seemingly gleaned from the few contests he had submitted his non superhero photos too) that Tim’s parents decide to put money and time (the more valuable of the two to Tim) into getting Tim an actual showing of his photographs. They even rearrange their dig schedule to be there for the show.
Nightwing starts patrolling Gotham more and keeps tracking Tim down during his patrols to give Tim a hug. Nightwing is not even upset about the picture taking.
Barbara Gordon, both in costume and not, crossed paths with Tim, apparently at random. Each time she had a book that she thought Tim would be interested in.
A blonde girl by the name of Steph and a little boy by the name of Duke seem to be taking turns finding Tim. Steph always chatters at him for a while before leaving. Duke tries to convince Tim to come home with Duke.
Alfred Pennyworth stops by several times, always with a perfectly reasonable excuse and always with some kind of food.
Then it gets even weirder:
A black haired girl follows him home, her name turns out to be Cass, kisses him on the forehead, calls him little brother, and never really leaves.
A six year old baby assassin (Damian) shows up at Tim’s doorstep one day with what is possibly his mother and declares that Tim is his brother and they need to start training immediately. (For her part Talia Al Ghul is a bit confused as to how Damian managed to talk her into coming here, but also decides within 20 minutes of meeting Tim that Tim must indeed be Damian’s half brother. Then she just wonders why he is living next door to her beloved and not at Wayne manor. Talia also quickly grows to love clever, sneaky Tim and is resolved to keep his existence from her father).
NOTE-Incidentally the Drakes come home and both become immediately smitten with Talia. The Drakes have an open relationship and Talia is exactly both of their types. Janet likes interesting people and Jack likes people who are deceptively strong and/or strong willed (Both had sex with Bruce at different points in time but Tim is not Bruce’s biological child. The timeline simply does not match up).
Unbeknownst to little Tim Drake all of these people, barring his parents and Talia, have memories of a future. In this future Tim, as Red Robin, died saving the world and the lives of the Batfam. After his death they each realized that he thought they did not see Tim as family (which was not true). When a freak accident shot their memories back in time, each decided that they wanted their brother/son/grandson back.
For a hilarious twist, none of the time travellers realize that anyone else came back (Though eventually Cass and Damian run into each other and realize that they both, at least, have come back).
So we have eight former/current/future Wayne’s circling this one confused 11 year old, each trying to figure out a reason to draw Tim back into the family without: 1.) letting on that they know more than they should to anyone (like the fact that they are all aware Tim knows who Batman and co are); 2.) Get Tim involved in vigilantism of any kind (as that got him killed) or barring that making sure that Tim is protected at all times; and 3.) Not making it obvious their enemies (as either Waynes or Bats) that they all have would do anything to keep Tim safe and happy.
Sort of a reverse of the common ‘One person comes back and fixes everything and keeps it a secret’. Instead we have eight people who came back and separately to try and fix this one specific thing (getting their baby bird back).
Shenanigans ensue

When Halloween started I was thinking about your CarrionAu by Tim Drake and how much I love it. That's why I wanted to draw you a fanart for @polarspaz, imagining that first encounter between a Batman who kills (because he has no other option) and a traumatized cellar goblin called Tim, who would become his son/doctor/poisoner. and in the background a scarecrow who is having the worst time of his life while Tim deciphers the formula for his fear gas.
I hope you like it and again, I love all your AUs!!!

Summary:
AU: Jason somehow managed to survive the Joker and retired as Robin and Tim was never needed by Batman. --- When a trip overseas during the holiday season ended up with Tim and his parents getting kidnapped, Tim found himself having the worst day of his life. It ended with Tim's mom dying and it left Tim's father in a coma. Tim was heavily injured and a bit scarred from the encounter... but at least Batman and Batgirl saved him and his dad.
Despite not being a Bat or a hero Tim still found himself in strange situations. Such as when he went to Paris when his dad, Jack was still in a comatose state and met three strange people that ended up with him sneaking alongside them.

Tim should NEVER go back to being Red Robin. Red Robin was a punishment and Tim at his lowest. It’s like when Dick lost it and went to Detroit and told everyone he loves to forget about him. Not a good look.
Tim should become an adult hero. He is in a stage of arrested development because everytime he meets his future self it’s Gun Batman. Also not a great look and probably an ego death on a scale I can’t understand.
Tim should definitely never be Batman (see Gun Batman). He should get out from under Batman’s cape and find a reason to be a hero other than “I want to help my heroes and I feel good when I help people.” Which yes is a total simplification but Tim doesn’t have a strong internal reason to be a hero.
He should become something like Strike or Cardinal (every universe gets a religious brother!). He should find being a hero fun again. He should fall in love with Gotham for his own reasons that are conscious and arguable.
Red Robin was great because it was about Tim growing up and finding his own moral code, which was inline with Batman’s at the end. But for every arch in the Red Robin run, Tim is exploring why he shouldn’t kill and be non lethal and give people the benefit of the doubt. That’s great! It’s very reflective of what real children go through in their later teen years. Tim is teetering on the edge and with each lesson explored and learned, he takes a step away from the ledge Jason was flung over. That’s good writing!
If I was writing Tim Drake, I would pick up with him feeling lost and going through the motions. He has his friends and his family and his cute boyfriend but he’s directionless. He’s working at Wayne Enterprises, a majority stockholder with very little say in the day to day on goings, maybe he’s got a small job in R&D where he gets to dick around with Lucious Fox every day. He goes on patrol and fucks around with his brothers and dad. He joins the Titans on the weekends to run small missions but isn’t an active live-in member of the team because he just doesn’t feel ready to leave Gotham. He goes on weekly dates with his boyfriend and tests him good morning kiss emojis. His life is quieter after the turmoil of his late teens. He’s settling into a grove but that finally leaves him time to think about what he wants to do.
Tim never planned to be a hero his whole life but here he is. He doesn’t need to work. He’s stupid rich and his dad is stupid rich. He hates school, going to college makes his skin itch. Bernard is in culinary school and sometimes hints at a trade school or getting a job just to have something to do for more than 10 hours a week and give him a chance to socialize. Tim is always at his best when he gets to socialize even if he claims he’s an introvert.
And then there is an inciting incident. A case makes Tim enroll in Gotham U and he sits in a few classes looking for a rogue his age. But he finds he actually likes it. It’s not like high school with so many rules and restrictions. The small discussion groups require real thinking. He’s not here to impress the teacher and get a decent grade. He talks about it with Bernard. For a second he even forgets about the case, he’s just so excited about the topic of discussion in his Ethics and Philosophy class.
So when the case is over, he considers signing up.
But then he worries about heroing and if he’ll have time. And he really really hated school…
And then he finds out his friends are going to be graduating college soon. Steph is graduating college next semester. Did he miss his chance? Would it be weird to be a 21 year old freshman?
But then there is another case. This time about a professor. Clearly something is in the water in Gotham U. Turns out that other case is connected to a conspiracy about the school so he keeps going and he keeps attending class. He jokes with Dick that this is the universe telling him to get a degree and Dick looks at him with that inquisitive look as he sees through Tim’s bluster and says “It’s okay to want something different.” And it stuns Tim. But of course Dick Grayson would know just what to say. It’s Dick Grayson.
And the story progresses. He makes new friends. Mostly for the case but he really likes them. And he has a panic attack over midterms. He hates tests. Bernard makes him hot coco and encourages him. He does well in class. Bs & As and some Cs but he doesn’t feel pressure about GPA because he’s not “really going anyway.” And then it’s finals and he finally catches the rogues which turns out to be a secret society of alumni who find smart students and encourage (pressure) them to take up villainy (usually not caped but Lex Luther can’t be the only evil businessman in Gotham!) to enrich the members of the secret society.
And the whole time, he’s enjoying college and his hero job. It feels like when he first ran away from JPV and set out to do his own thing as Robin. It’s not like he’s always hiding under Bruce’s cape but it’s nice to be fully in charge of his case again. He doesn’t go to the Batcave at all. He just works out of his nest in Crime Alley because it’s closer to campus. Bruce stumbled his way through saying he’s happy to see Tim back at the nest and Tim feels happy even if Bruce insults his house boat like two times. It’s nice to see his dad validate him as his own adult hero, spreading his wings.
For some reason (comic book logic insert here) he can’t go out as Robin. He doesn’t want to be caught associating with the Bat. The secret society is really good at hiding from the Bats, it’s how they’ve lasted this long. So he has to design a new look that isn’t Black & Red. He keeps the bat insignia off because it’s temporary and, again, he doesn’t want this touching Batman. He’s just on his own taking down this secret society that encourages corruption and destruction in Gotham.
(Maybe at some point he has to hang out with Helena and it just feels really nostalgic and nice! Listen I love their sibling dynamic!!)
And at the end, he’s finished one semester of Gotham U, he has a new costume that feels good and is all his own, not a legacy he has to uphold or a punishment he’s inflicting on himself because of grief and rage. And he feels good. It’s the best he’s felt in so long. He feels like he has purpose, that he’s in control of his life instead of just moving day to day.
He doesn’t want to give up this feeling.
So he signs up for next semester, tells his friends and family and boyfriend he’s going to college, and slaps a bat on his new costume and introduces the world to Strike.

Leverage Au Memes;

(This happens more often than they'd like).

(Forgot to mention this is part of my 'Tim Julias Luthor' au where he was adopted by Smallville Lex Luthor).

(Somehow, in their research, they never realized who exactly Matches was until they were in the same place together).

(And this is when he's not being possessed by 'Dionysus', lol).

(Somehow, Tim gets away with it).

(Their plans rarely go to plan).

(The Joker never learns).

(It's a game of cat and mouse).

Time of His life
These last few weeks I have been drawn to strange reel apps where they appear to be taking hour to two hour long Korean dramas, breaking them up into 1-3 minute chunks and charging way too much after the first sevenish free reel (14-21 minutes). I have been drawn in because the Facebook Algorithm has apparently been paid to show these apps to me and I am a sucker for drama.
There was one that I watched last week where I thought, after it was done, ‘What if this…but Jaytim’. All the normal warnings about how this is not canon apply. Also I honestly don’t remember what the drama was called and everytime I watched clips the name of the characters was different.
Let's start off with a synopsis of the drama. We start with the death of the Heroine who had an arranged marriage to a man that is both very rich/powerful and has some kind of supernatural affliction that causes madness filled fits. Before her death, the Heroine did not like her husband. She considered him cold, controlling, and somewhat monstrous. The Heroine is then killed by her uncle, who had raised her but all he and his family wanted from her was her money. As a ghost the Heroine watches as her husband killed the people who killed her and her uncle, who paid for her to be killed. Then the husband surrounded her body with her favorite flowers and committed suicide by fire to join her in death. Watching as a ghost, the Heroine realized that her husband truly loved her and felt regret for how she treated him. As the fire burns the Heroine wakes up years earlier, on the day she was meant to marry her husband. She vows to treat her husband better and cut off the greedy family that would kill her. As the drama goes on she falls in love with her husband and they navigate life with the schemes of the greedy family members as well as an ex of the husband who wants to get back together with him (the husband is not interested). There is a twist toward the end where it is revealed the Ex’s family was the one who poisoned the husband with a poison that caused the supernatural powers and the fit of madness. At the end the husband also remembers what happened in the previous timeline, and the Heroine gets to apologize properly for her behavior and they live happily ever after.
Now Picture this: Jason is in the role of the heroine, Tim as the husband. I know what you are all thinking because I initially thought of Tim as the heroine as well. Bear with me a moment and let me set up how this works.
In the initial timeline Jason does not go searching for his mother. Between suspecting Jason of murder, though Bruce does eventually clear him, and the normal growing pains of teenagehood Jason and Bruce relationship is damaged but his birth certificate is just a little bit more damaged. When Jason is 16 Willis Todd gets out of prison, he and Sheila reconnect and realize that their son is now part of the Wayne family. At the same time Damian, aged up a few years (to be 10 years old when he arrived) to work for this timeline, arrives at Wayne manor and directs all of his aggression on the current Robin (Jason). Damian also, as it seems to Jason, replaces Jason in the entire family’s affection.
Willis and Sheila use this, playing Jason’s insecurities to draw him just far away from the Waynes that they can use him to access the Wayne family fortune (a lot of ‘oh they must pity you’ or ‘you are not really family to them’ kinda things). Shelia is good at maintaining that careful balance that would not see Jason break ties completely, and thus lose their access to the money, but also having Jason distrustful of the Wayne family and their motives, and likewise extremely trusting of Willis and Sheila. Jason even gives up Robin to Damian without being asked.
The Batfam do realize something is going on for Jason to be pulling away, but they are trying to be respectful. By the time they realize how far he has pulled it seems impossible to bridge the gap. In desperation Bruce arranges for Jason (age 20) to marry Tim Drake (let's pretend that this is considered a reasonable thing for Gotham Elite), hoping to tie him closer to the family. Willis and Sheila, realizing Tim Drake's net worth, encourage Jason to go through with it with the same disdain for Tims motives.
In this one Tim never becomes a Robin, but instead his hacking skills get the attention of Oracle whom he apprentices as Apollo. He is closer to the Birds of Prey than the Bat family in this but his character and skills are very well regarded by Batman and his brood. He has also been in love with Jason Todd since Tim was fifteen (Tim is two years younger than Jason). Jason is displeased and distrustful, borderline cruel to his new husband, encouraged by Willis and Sheila. Tim continues to treat Jason well but Jason is predisposed to taking the worst possible interpretation of everything Tim, the batfam (now including Cass and Steph), and particularly Bruce ever does.
This goes on until Jason is about 23 when he starts to lose trust in Willis and Sheila. Neither are stupid and realize that their gravy train is coming to an end. They decide to make one final score and drug Jason, selling him to a gang. The gang, in turn, sells Jason to the Joker (who was looking for someone to kill to blow off steam). The Joker beats him to death and is gone by the time that Apollo (Tim) finds Jason’s body. The entire process takes less than four hours. Unseen by the living Jason’s ghost is standing next to his corpse and gets to watch first hand as Apollo crumples at sight of Jaosn’s corpse and how carefully Tim picks up his body to bring him back to the manor.
Jason gets a front row seat to how the Batfam grieves him, and how his death destroyed them.
Though they all spread out to track down his murderers, it is Dick that finds the Joker. Dick beats the Joker to death with his bare hands but the Joker gets a few good hits in and Dick succumbs to his injuries moments after the Joker stops breathing.
Cass, Steph, and Damian (who had grown to love Jason as his brother) hunt down the gang that had sold Jason to the Joker, even Cass has no intention of abiding by the no kill rule. In their grief they are reckless. Between the three of them they kill 90% of the Gang, but there are just too many and all three die with a wish to join their dead brother. Unseen Jason’s ghost is sobbing in the corner.
It is Bruce Wayne, in the Batman suit but missing the cowl, that tracks down Willis and Sheila. It is Bruce and Batman together that breaks his no killing rule to slaughter the two people who had betrayed and hurt his son. The killing does the damage he always feared it would and sparked off a 12 hour rampage that ended with Commissioner Gordon having put Batman/Bruce down, permanently.
Back at the manor Babs had been coordinating when needed between Tim, who had only left Jason’s body long enough to collect Jason’s favorite flowers, and the hunting teams. She listened while everyone fell. She was the one to report the successes and deaths. When everything else was done, Tim very calmly hired Deathstroke to kill the remainder of the gang, and gave both Barbara and Alfred a final out before his end game. Neither left, there was no one left for them.
Tim went to the room where Jason’s body was, unaware that Jason’s ghost was following behind. He laid down with Jason’s corpse, and without flinching set the flowers, and subsequently Wayne manor, on fire, intent on joining Jason. Alfred and Barbara waiting on the floor below for the end.
Jason, now outright sobbing, vowed that if he met any of them in the afterlife he would treat the mall so much better, seeing how much they loved him.
Then Jason woke up. He was back at the morning of his Wedding to Tim Drake, and he remembered everything. He does not confront Willis or Sheila right away, knowing that ‘it came to me in a dream’ would not be accepted. However he decides that he will not be alone with either of his birth parents again.
He still goes to marry Tim, but instead of seeing Tim as a cold, monstrous man trying to trap him, Jason realizes that his new husband is both smitten and shy, coming off as cold to hide his awkwardness. Frankly it is endearing. Since Tim stated in both timelines that he would not touch Jason without his consent, Jason decides to treat this as if they were dating, for all that they were married. Jason had to admit, there was something powerful in the fact that Jason could make this nearly all powerful man’s (at least in Gotham) brain ground to a halt with just a few teasing words and a smile. Even better was the times when Tim, rather than getting flustered, responded in kind with his own teasing smile.
It turned out that, now that Jason was not up in arms, Tim was exceedingly easy to fall in love with.
Jason also began to rebond with the family he had left behind. The first time he showed up for a family dinner, Tim in tow, it seemed like Dick would vibrate out of his seat, he was so excited. It was nice to know that, even beyond the grief of death he had been missed. He even found himself mentioning that he was looking to go to college, though he was not sure for what yet. In the previous timeline he had brought the idea up to his biological parents who had shattered his confidence that he was capable. This time he got an overwhelmingly positive response and enthusiasm, with Dick teasing Bruce about dropping out of medical school. Damian, 13 years old and approximately four apples tall, tells Jason that it is good that Jason is going to college so that Damian will have an actual respectable source for how good whatever college Jason goes to when the time comes. Steph is cheering about possibly having a friend on campus, or someone to complain about classes with, while Bruce and Tim get into a play argument about who ‘gets’ to pay for Jason’s schooling (as in both are claiming that it is their privilege).
The B plot is, behind the scenes, Jason is working to distance himself from his bio parents without letting on that he knows they are using him or to let them do something that is so obvious that he can cut ties without having to explain (because he does not want to deal with I have memories of a future). He is careful not to meet with them alone any longer, but is also aware that, as Tims husband, his reputation and how he is viewed is somewhat more important than it used to be (No that Tim would care, but Jason had already hurt Tim enough in the other timeline, he didn’t want to do anything to cause him harm in this one).
If we wanted to lean fully into the source Drama, we could cast Ra’s Al Ghul as the ‘Ex’ (they were never together in anything but Ra’s delusions) trying to harm or humiliate Jason to clear the place at Tim’s side, to Tim’s obvious disgust.
In this one Jason never picks up a mask again, having found he likes civilian life. But he bonds with his family and uses both Tim and Bruce’s money (with their full approval) to improve life in Crime Alley and the Bowery, notably doing it without gentrification. Jason also discovers Duke and brings him home for Bruce to adopt (‘Get the batdoption papers, old man’ ‘I told Dick we were not calling them that...’). So any attempt by Willis and Sheila, or by Ra’s, to slander/humiliate Jason fails badly and keeps failing, because Jason is well liked at every level of society. Jason also gets to go to college, accidentally ending up on a watch list because he got into a PHD program in Gotham (In Theatre Arts, which is second only to Psychiatry in ‘Degrees likely to result in a rogue, why do we keep offering these programs?’).
On the day that Jason would have died in the original timeline, Tim and the rest of the Batfam (barring Duke) do get their memories of the original timeline. This results in a cuddle pile at the Manor where everyone needs to reassure themselves that Jason was still there. By that time Ra’s has been soundly removed from the picture (Possibly killed by Talia, no one knows). Willis and Sheila are back in jail for life for their crimes against Jason Drake-Wayne.
Then they get their happy ending.

Mortimer Von Brusseltrout (Tim is Unhinged)

From this absolute banger of a fic:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/48795628
cards on the table
By wesslan
Summary:
Tim's parents faked their deaths and fled the country years ago, but neglected to take him with them. He spent some time on the streets, and now at 16, he makes a living as a fortune teller, stalking and hustling the shit out of Gotham's elite by telling them eerily accurate fortunes based on the information he gathers about them.
His life is peculiar but he wouldn't change a thing. When he gets booked for the big Wayne Halloween party, however, he finds himself getting all tangled up with the Waynes, and the more fortunes he tells, the tighter the snare becomes.
or: Tim just wanted to scam Gotham's elite, not end up on the Batfamily's watchlist. But it seems they just won't leave him alone..

Chapter Nineteen: Fourth
For the next two months, Tim woke me up in the early parts of the morning to train. Bruce assumed that Tim took my physical therapy super seriously, so I let him believe that. I got out of bed every morning to run on the treadmill while Tim ran the drills that I gave him. Barbara stressed that I wouldn’t be as fast or as strong as I used to be, but I didn’t need to be. I just needed to be smarter than Bruce.
Tim on the other hand learned fast, and he taught me a few things about myself. Sparring with him made me better. And it made Barbara suspicious.
“How many months do we have left?” Tim asked.
“October, Tim. And I think I’m gonna be late coming home from Barbara’s tonight,” I replied, “What are you gonna do while I’m gone? Go to Ives’ place?”
“Um… No, I’m gonna go to the hospital and see Dad—.”
I grabbed his arm. “Can you give him that box upstairs in my room? It’s from both of us,” I requested.
“You want me to lie?” Tim asked.
“Nope. I took ten dollars from your wallet for express shipping,” I half-joked. Tim playfully punched my shoulder. “I’ll buy lunch next week.”
Tim stood in the gym with me, shifting his weight from left to right. “Did you need the money—?” Tim hugged me. It almost knocked me off balance, but I held firm. I figured he thought about his mom and needed something to hold onto for comfort. He didn’t talk about her, but I could tell it still hurt. I think that part of me was shut off. I didn’t grieve when I should’ve and now that part of my heart is missing. I keep trying to fill it with Tim’s grief but nothing can take up that space. I would’ve given anything to be able to cry for my moms or my dad. I could only cry for Tim, but it didn’t fix anything inside of me. I squeezed him tight, and he let go.
“I might spend the night at the hospital,” Tim whispered.
“Okay… If you don’t see me tonight, I’ll send you a text,” I replied. We didn’t have to talk about it. Besides, I had to shift my focus to a vigilante tagger foiling Cluemaster’s most recent heists… And I had a pretty good idea of where to find the culprit. I had to do it alone to prove to myself I could still do this. It had nothing to do with my plans. I just needed this as a confidence boost.
**
After training with Barbara, I took a shower and headed straight for a suburban neighborhood in Gotham. I watched the house for almost an hour before watching a girl speed off on a motorbike. I couldn’t keep up with her on foot, but Tim had this crazy idea about me skating to compensate for my speed deficit.
I thought it was stupid when he suggested it, but it was a huge improvement. I was right behind her until we got to a cluster of buildings. I watched her enter a building, and I took the old way up. I almost forgot how cold it was scaling buildings. The air whipped past, hurting my exposed wrists, but I kept at it. By the time I got up there, she was there with a brick. And the thing is, no matter how much the incident slowed me down, my hands were as fast as ever. I caught her wrist and squeezed until she dropped it. “I’m not here to fight. I think we’re a lot alike, Stephanie,” I stated. She moved in for a headbutt, but I was a little too tall for her, so it didn’t land quite right and she hit my chin.
“Ouch! Jesus!” Stephanie winced as she clutched her forehead. She stumbled and landed on her butt, which gave me time to level with her. My chin hurt, but she didn’t have a lot of leverage on that headbutt. She really hurt herself more than she hurt me.
I crouched in front of her. “Can I talk now?” I asked.
“What do you want?” Stephanie questioned.
“I wanna help you put your dad in jail… If that’s what you want. I just—. I need someone like you. Someone they’d underestimate, someone tough—. Can you take the mask off? I wanna make sure you’re not hurt too bad,” I requested. She sighed and took the mask off, and I checked her for signs of a concussion.
Stephanie reached for my mask, and I flinched before letting her take it off. She took a good look at my face, and I got a good look at hers. “What do you need me for?” Stephanie asked. Her voice was serious as she watched my eyes.
“I want to show my dad that I’m not broken… And you want to show your dad that you’re not like him. You’re the kind of person I’d trust with my life… But it’s not me that I want you to look after,” I whispered. Stephanie was the perfect person to look after Tim. I stared at the red mark my chin left on her forehead and frowned as I took an ice pack out of my belt. “Here.”
“Thanks… What are you asking me?” Stephanie replied.
“Um… I want you to follow my brother on Halloween. I want you to make sure nobody hurts him. That’s all I’m asking… And I’ll do everything in my power to get your father put away,” I promised.
She held eye contact with me the entire time. “What’s so special about me?” Stephanie asked.
“What isn’t special about you?” I asked in reply. All I saw when I looked in her eyes was Catherine. I could see hurt, but I also saw hope. I couldn’t tell her that, though. I had to tell her something else. Something true but not as personal. “I know you’re a good person. That’s why I have to tell you my name. I’m Jason, and I know how it feels to be betrayed. Say you’ll let me help you.”
“My dad might get out after he gets caught—.”
“Stephanie, I know how the justice system works in Gotham. I’m telling you right now, I’m not going anywhere. If you tell me now you want me to help, I’ll help as long as I’m able,” I interrupted.
“Call me Steph… And give me five seconds. We’ll go and get something to eat… Talk details,” Steph smiled as she pinched my cheek.
“My treat,” I replied.
Steph pulled her mask back on and clicked her tongue as she pointed finger guns at me. “Wait. You said you’d help me? Who are you?” Steph asked.
“I used to be somebody,” I replied without thinking. It almost upset me to hear the words come out of my mouth.
“You’re still somebody… But that doesn’t answer my question. Who are you? And why do you think you can help me?” Steph asked. She smiled a half-smile as she returned my ice pack.
“I don’t really know who I am… But I—. I know I can help you if you let me. How about we grab something to eat while you tell me about your dad’s plans?” I asked.
“Sure,” Steph whispered as I pulled my mask back on.
