i got hobonichi dupes!! kinbor weekly a6 (pink) and kinbor daily a5 (black)

this week's spread at the beginning of the week vs after last night! it's messier than id like but i think that's the realistic part of having a planner that's used everyday.
as badly as i want a hobonichi from everything ive been seeing online, i couldn't justify the price in the event that i.... didnt actually use it. however the kinbor techos are almost the same setup and only cost $10-20 each rather than $40-80 😭 so if it goes well, then maybe i will allow myself to invest in a hobonichi next year. the weekly is for schedule/to-do/planning and the daily is for journaling and documenting my every day :]
i've been recovering from the brutal fall semester of MS2 😭 and now we're straight back into the new spring term. i have my STEP 1 date now April 7 !! and i'm panicking and nervous 😬 cuz the practice test yesterday was Brutal. now i'm not sure if taking it at the beginning of dedicated is worth it. 😭 i'm gonna do a social media detox/cleanse and delete most things off my phone until i take STEP. my u🌏 app is about to become my most used and my best friend. i will try to be more active for accountability's sake but if i cannot post on here, i shall use my friends to hold me accountable haha. that's all my updates for now. 🫡

I'm preparing for USMLE STEP 1, and it has been a wild ride so far.
I'll probably give the exam in October, although I haven't set the date yet.
To stay productive, I'll share my studying journey here, mentioning how many blocks I did in a day and what else I did.
I have 85 days to go.
So this is day 1/85.

Halfway through my outpatient clinic mini-block. Some interesting food for thought re: medicinal practices in different cultures and how we as pediatricians interface with school health offices to care for children.
Anyway I have step 3 in 2.5 weeks and the only thing that’s keeping me from panicking is blowing my budget on croissants and macchiatos any time I get the chance.

Final Year Exams, STEP 1, STEP 2 & Research Internship done in 6 months✅
My Story:
I decided to embark USMLE journey last November, got ECFMG applied and started UW for Step 1 late December 2023. I continued Step 1 prep for 2 weeks and then took a break for my university exams. In the beginning of February, I got a bizzare idea of prepping for Step 2 thanks to reddit and Free 120 of STEP 2.
So, I took UW STEP 2 in Feb. Everyday for a month, I did 2 blocks of STEP 1 & 1 block of STEP 2 system-wise. I had to stop for a month in March due to university exams. I jumped back on STEP 1 & 2 immediately after exams, this time, doing 2 blocks of STEP 2 and 1 block of STEP 1.
For STEP 1, I relied only on UW and First Aid. No NBMEs. No other resources. For STEP 2, I used UW and Inner Circle notes. No anki even though Tzancki deck was instilled on the notes.
By end of April, I was done with 90% UW STEP 1 and 60% STEP 2 UW. I sat 15 days dedicated for STEP 1 and gave exam on May and got the PASS. Took a vacation for 2 weeks and then returned back to STEP 2 prep.
I did UW upto 95%, shifted to CMS forms, did 2 each for main subjects and started NBMES. NBMES were all in 250s range except for 13 and 14 which hit 260s. I used to work full time as a research intern during June and do 80-160 questions a day. I also did a review of Inner Circle notes once during the whole month.
Dedicated:
In the month of July, I sat 3 weeks dedicated where I did AMBOSS High Yield qbank and articles. In the final weeks, I went through NBMEs once again, and reviewed the notes.
I also did AMBOSS HY 2nd pass. Did ethics screening vaccination quality and biostats from Amboss.
As for DIP, I listened to high yield stuff but only reviewed the Antibiotics and Palliative podcast in the end.
Day before Test:
Went through all NBME diagrams, did AMBOSS Ethics and Quality, quickly read through ethics articles, did Free 120 two days before the exam.
Test Day:
I was quite relaxed and had my breakfast. The exam felt fairly straight. I took breaks after every 2-3 blocks. Drank water during each break and took a toilet break. Thats all. I finished most blocks with 10-15 minutes to spare and did a 2nd pass of all the questions.
ACTUAL SCORE: 269
Overall, after solving 12k questions, I am happy to complete my fourth year exams, STEP 1 and STEP 2 together in a span of 6 months while being a student and full time research intern.
I am happy to give back to this community and would love to support and finance my further journey with paid mentorships for STEP 1 and STEP 2. If interested, check out here: https://lnkd.in/gwMDWR_9

An Example of Scientists Being Nerds
What do Sonic the Hedgehog and cyclopia have to do with each other? A lot, actually.
Alobar holoprosencephaly (aka cyclopia) is a condition in which the prosencephalon does not properly split during development. Let me explain what that means. So, one of the most important structures in the early embryo is the neural tube. This tube comes from the ectoderm and eventually becomes the central nervous system. The top of it has three little bulbs and the bottom is the spinal cord.
The top bulb is the prosencephalon, which will later differentiate into the telencephalon and diencephalon. These will become the cerebral hemispheres, basal ganglia, thalamus, hypothalamus, and amygdala. The middle bulb is the mesencephalon, which will become the midbrain. The bottom bulb is the rhombencephalon, which will differentiate into the metencephalon and myelencephalon. These will become the pons, cerebellum, and medulla.
So, this entire thing has to split in half anteriorly. The anterior portion of this structure deals with motor function, and the posterior half deals with sensory function. This holds true as an adult. The front half of your spinal cord carries motor nerves, and the back half carries sensory info. If you want to move your eyes, you use the front part of your brain. If you want to know what you are seeing, you use the back half.
If you look at your spinal cord, the front half has this fissure down the middle (anterior median fissure is such a fitting name, then right??). Your brain is also split down the middle. Since the eyes are part of your brain, you get one for each half of the brain (two). Now, let's say you never have this anterior fissure form... you won't get two eyes, either. The condition where the fissure doesn't form is called holoprosencephaly (holo means whole).
There are five types of this (in order of decreasing severity): alobar, semilobar, lobar, syntelencephaly, and microform.
*note that the more severe the condition is, the more likely the fetus will die and not form all structures mentioned*
Alobar: there will be one eye, a proboscis (fleshy tube on the face), and severe mental impairment.
Semilobar: eyes will be close together, the nasal bridge will be flat, the palate and lip will be cleft, and there will be mental and ocular impairment.
Lobar: the eyes will be close together, the nasal bridge will be flat, the nostrils will be close together, and there will be some mental impairments.
Syntelencephaly: flat nasal bridge, shallow philtrum, and possible mental delays.
Microform: eyes may be close, nasal bridge will be sharp, and there will be one central upper incisor.
Okay, so what does this have to do with Sonic the Hedgehog? Sonic hedgehog (SHH) genes, of course! This gene codes for the sonic hedgehog protein, which controls what happens during organogenesis (how everything differentiates and forms). A mutation in this gene can cause issues with how embryos form, and is indicated specifically in holoprosencephaly. SHH genes are still important in adults, and mutations can be linked to certain cancers.
Fun fact: an inhibitor of SHH genes is called Robotnikinin. I personally love this. And, here's a citation in case you don't believe me: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2770933/

No quiero grises.
No quiero un talvez no quiero eso. Yo quería contigo todo o nada. Blanco o negro. Somos o no somos.
