Vote NO on the SAVE Act!

I am writing to express my strong opposition to H.R. 22, the so-called “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” (SAVE) Act. While this bill is framed as a measure to combat voter fraud, it is, in reality, a voter suppression effort that creates unnecessary barriers to voting and disenfranchises millions of Americans.

The SAVE Act would require voters to present narrow forms of “documentary proof of citizenship,” such as a passport or birth certificate, to participate in federal elections. This would disproportionately harm:

- Up to 150 million Americans who do not have a passport.

- Approximately 69 million women citizens who do not have a birth certificate with their current legal name on it.

- Elderly Americans, who are the least likely to hold passports.

Additionally, in 7 states, less than one-third of citizens have a valid passport – Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.

The SAVE Act is a solution in search of a problem. Worse, it would erode the fundamental right to vote, silencing the voices of vulnerable communities under the guise of election security. Rather than advancing harmful legislation like the SAVE Act, Congress should focus on protecting and expanding voting rights by supporting measures such as the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

One of the foundational values of our democracy is the idea that every person is entitled to a vote – a say in the direction of our nation. I urge you and your colleagues to work towards that founding ideal. Thanks.

My county's Democratic party has been handing out sticky notes to place in private areas, like bathroom stalls or stairwells, to remind individuals that who they vote for is private. They're giving out these notes FOR FREE. Give your local Dem's office a call to see if they're doing the same. As the right becomes more extreme, it's important to remind others that their ballot will be private and that early voting is as easy as saying you're going to the grocery store.

Election Fraud Is Hard

I just got back from being the Democratic observer at a "Risk Limiting Audit."

Here in Georgia, the Dominion scanners read either the mail-in ballot or the machine-printed ballot that is created when you use the machine to select your votes in person. The scanners read a QR-style barcode, but there's also a plain-text summary of the person's vote for every race printed on it.

But how do we know the scanners are reading the mail-in ballots correctly, or that the QR code actually matches the voter's picks? That's what this audit is for. The state generates random numbers that are then used for every county in Georgia to pick a few batches - the in-person votes from a specific precinct, or a specific 100-vote group of the mail-ins, or one of the bundles of early votes. While it doesn't show in the public results, the state keeps a record of the results from EACH batch as it was reported by the machines on or after Election Day.

So on Audit Day, each county pulls out those randomly selected batches, puts each batch on a table with two paid election workers (to double-check each other), and they hand-count them. They use their human eyes to read the printed text, ignoring the barcode, or they visually count the check marks on the mail-in ballots. Those human-generated results are then checked against the machine-generated results, and we see if they match.

So next time you hear someone talking about the machines changing the vote, or wondering about those QR codes, or whatever, let 'em know - there really are humans going back and double-checking this stuff. And not just one human - there's two at each table, and election supervisors organizing it, and partisan observers sitting there keeping an eye on the process. And this is just ONE of the many checks and precautions. Other states have different procedures, but they're all careful and thorough. Election fraud is HARD, y'all - and that's why there's so little of it.

Debunk #2--Yet another dishonest very short video clip taken out of context

@the--dark--side as I pointed out in Debunk #1, whenever you see a very short video clip circulated by far-right activists/media that seems to imply that a Democrat said something outrageous, you need to ask yourself what is the larger context that the OP deliberately left out of this clip?

In the above video, the context the right-wing propagandists left out was that Biden had made one of his typical word flubs. He said "fraud" when it is clear by the context of his comment that he meant "protection."

According to USA Today:

Fact check: Biden said he created a large 'voter fraud organization' Since the beginning of his campaign, Biden’s foot has been no stranger to his mouth. The self-described “gaffe machine” is under fire again as Republican leaders promote a recent quote as a confession of wide-scale voter fraud. “We have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics,” Biden said in a clip posted to Instagram Oct. 24. [...] Biden was describing voter protections Biden made the statement while on the liberal podcast "Pod Save America." The Oct. 24 podcast, video recording and transcript show Biden was discussing countering voter suppression rather than encouraging voter fraud. When podcast host Dan Pfeiffer asked, “What’s your message to the folks who have not yet voted or do not yet have a plan to vote?” Biden responded: “Republicans are doing everything they can to make it harder for people to vote. Particularly people of color to vote. So go to iwillvote.com. Secondly, we’re in a situation where we have put together, and you guys did it for President Obama’s administration before this, we have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics. What the president [Trump] is trying to do is discourage people from voting by implying that their vote won’t be counted. It can’t be counted. We’re going to challenge it and all these things.’ [color emphasis added]

So this was not a "confession" by Biden of creating a voter "fraud" organization. It was a paraphasia--a verbal error where one word is substituted for another. You know, like Trump did when he meant to be referring to Biden but he said "Obama" instead. Or when he meant to say Pelosi, but he said "Haley" instead.

Old guys like Biden and Trump frequently make paraphasias. It is unfair to take advantage of Biden's tendency to make paraphasias and to dishonestly leave out the context of what Biden meant to say.
