Golden Bachelorette 2024 discussion/finale spoilers
Tumblr media
I don't feel good about myself that I do watch the Golden Bachelor/Golden Bachelorette but for some reason I can stomach the contrived nature of the premise when you know everyone has been around the block and just won't be getting into screaming matches. While the participants are surely still plied with non-stop, copious amounts of alcohol and are encouraged to interact dramatically, it just doesn't lead to the same wild attacks, at least in either season so far of the Golden version. So it's just a bunch of people doing silly things, having fun, and feeling good about themselves so it's easy to ignore the fact that these people are spending like 13 hours together and then expected to be engaged.
So when in the no-olds version, those 13 hours are like half them just yelling at other "contestants", I can't get into that at all.
Joan Vassos picked Chock and he was clearly a good choice from the show participants.
It is so funny to me that if you just understand what is actually being said by Joan, how she made it very clear she wasn't going to go to the Bone Zone Suites with anyone, and that she wasn't going to actually say that she loved anyone until there was just one guy left that she was only looking for a guy to START dating. She went through the hoopla of the show and said everything and I believe she actually is still seeing/dating Chock but as much heartache as this show put this woman through, she got her two seasons of television, got her family to Disney World, and found a guy she kind of likes to start dating, ha!
I think she'll be remembered as the first real Golden lead since Gerry Turner ended up being a sleazebag and it just feels good to me that she controlled the forces of this stupid TV program to actually be a good thing for her.
A notable moment from the finale was when the producers were BEGGING Guy to cry when Joan dumped him. Like, I am sure that was a full one or two hours of everyone's human life of filming and reshoots where they were trying to get this man to shed any moisture and all they could get were his eyes red and then made him stand in the rain. It just shows me that I think Joan was really managing all of their expectations in their private conversations so another reason she was making this stupid, silly premise less damaging to everyone involved.
I am curious why some of the contestants were cut like Jordan or Jonathan who it seemed like there was genuine chemistry and interest on both ends. Possibly because Chock was just FULL co-dependency, all-in from day one, that may have meant Joan was really into picking him very early on so a contestant like Guy was more a produced storyline but she clearly kept a lot of control throughout.
The feel-bad nature of the Bachelor/Bachelorette premise is transformed into something watchable when the contestants are middle-aged/seniors, is my point. The fact that both seasons so far had the contestants mostly forming actual friendships with one another and just kind of going with the flow makes it a worthwhile watch.
They keep trying to make me watch the original shows but if anything the trailer packages they preview at the finale of the Golden version just serve to reinforce why I can't get into those but I do think I'm kind of a Golden Bachelor/Bachelorette fan.
I absolutely demand more objectification though! They also need to tone down the "inspirational" message too now that we've had two first seasons. Older people fully want to just be in romantic and/or sexual relationships, it's not a Hallmark Original every time one of them starts dating or smashing.
