I guess it took seeing an entire season for me to really get The Chosen, because now that I've seen all of season 1, I'm impressed. I've got issues with the (slow) pacing of individual episodes or about certain character or plot choices, but on a structural level, it's so well-done.
The season starts and ends with episodes focused on a woman who has suffered for years in a life of sin, is rejected by all good society, and is saved when Jesus sees her and calls her to a new life. With Mary Magdalene, He keeps his work secret, and doesn't even tell her His name. With the woman at the well, He tells her straight-out that He's the Messiah, and He wants her to spread the message.
The main season-long character arcs center on two people who are living comfortable lives in authority positions, who are baffled when they see Jesus' miracles, obsessively search for the truth, and are eventually called by Jesus to follow Him. Matthew's story shows how Jesus conflicts with Roman authority, while Nicodemus' shows how He conflicts with Jewish authority. In the end, Matthew instantly leaves His life and follows Jesus without hesitation, while Nicodemus is the one who rejects the call and stays in his comfortable life.
It's there, it's good storytelling, I love it.
#the chosen#i've seen all of season one#scattered episodes of the remaining seasons#(with a good chunk at the end of season 4)#it's so fun to have a religious show that i watch because i enjoy it#rather than because you feel like you should#i like the characters! it's funny! it's good storytelling!#i didn't even mention how feral i went over the first episode of season 2#where they intensely highlight how john's gospel parallels genesis#(watching this after binging shameless popery massively improves the experience)#i have problems with other parts#i majorly DID NOT like the lazarus episode#(the most astounding miracle should be much more focused on the awe)#(and much less focused on them angsting over jesus not resurrecting every dead person)#(in general i'm not thrilled with thomas' plotline)#(maybe it works better in full context but from what i saw it was not how i wanted them to approach the story)

Broke (2016): BBC Sherlock is a phenomenal piece of media and anything that seems like a flaw just hasn't been fully explored yet
Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)
Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked
#these just sum up my personal takes at the years in question and also what i'm seeing on tumblr/other social media#bbc sherlock#sherlock holmes#and i actually have a lot more thoughts to share on this series#specifically relating to the cultural impact#there is SO much about the show that goes unappreciated in hindsight because of how public perception of it has soured#and i totally fell into this as well--i still regularly rewatch hbomberguy's video absolutely dismantling the series and he isn't wrong!!#but what i'm saying is that i think it's easy for us to look at a piece of media (especially one so massively popular) like sherlock...#with very black-and-white lenses. it wouldn't have become so popular if there wasn't something inherent in it that resonated with people#and that's being buried (and i totally forgot it) because 'sherlock is cringe and problematic. can't believe i liked that'#which again it IS full of issues and those are well-documented as they should be. future portrayals should not repeat those mistakes#BUT being able to impact so many people is a merit in itself. and that's only possible because of other genuinely good things about the show#yes the way they handled the relationship between john and sherlock was riddled with problems YES it was often queerbaiting#AND the way they portrayed that relationship had a deep effect on me. i saw a lot of myself in sherlock and the complex way he loved john#the nuanced feelings he had about john's marriage to mary. the part (in s4!) where john calls him inhuman for not feeling romantic love#there was genuine intention and care put into some parts of this show and it comes through in scenes like those. they impact people.#and because of this realization i'm going to (eventually) do a rewatch of the show. i'm much older and i want to see how i'll view it now#but i want to go into it--and i want everyone who engages with it still--to have an open mind and evaluate it for what it is#not what we expected it to be (secret episode anyone?) or what the cultural drift has turned it into (the tiktok of sherlock's mind palace)#but the messy problematic somewhat-heartfelt massively significant and ultimately meaningful piece of media it actually was#anyway that's my thoughts would love to hear y'all's perspectives#funny how after all this time making a sherlock post still feels like i'm poking a bees' nest lol please be kind!#kay can i just catch my breath for a second#kay has a party in the tags

Idk the way phannies keep on talking about periods as a female-exclusive thing just makes me feel vaguely excluded as a transmasc person....
#like yes they are doing it for the girlies#but also trans men and nonbinary people too?#like we make up a massive part of this fandom#anyways#I keep on seeing posts and going#i relate!#and then being blindsided with dysphoria when the tags imply that this is a female-only problem#dan and phil#dan & phil#dnp#i don't particularly want to be negative in the phandom tags though....

Wait, he ranked the price of Twitter by 20 billion? Weren’t the rumours that he was looking to tank Twitter then sell off its assets?
The problem is you can find all sorts of rumors. He bought Twitter to wreck it, he bought Twitter to turn it into the X App he failed at pitching at PayPal, he bought Twitter to destroy the public square and undermine democracy, he bought Twitter as part of a deal with Mark Zuckerberg to destroy Twitter and leave Facebook as the only viable social media platform, he bought Twitter to appears the grey aliens in their war against the lizard people on behalf of the Illuminati.
The thing is...Elon Musk did NOT want to buy Twitter. He had to be sued and forced to buy the company.
He ran his mouth because he was angry he wasn't getting his way like the rich asshole he is, basically saying "If you don't do what I say I'll just buy the place and make you." And because he'd already bought shares of the company as part of this strongarm tactic, he was legally responsible for buying the company. And at his stupid-ass $54.20 offer that added over $150 million to the price just to add the $0.20 to the price because 420 blaze it and he is a child.
Add in that Tesla and SpaceX only function because they're Musk-proofed themselves. There are layers between the manic whims of the spoiled manchild that prevent him from running around yanking wires out of stuff to see what breaks like he's allegedly done at Twitter (technically it was turning off servers to see who panicked accord to reports but seriously, that's the sort of shit he's doing).
There doesn't need to be any grand conspiracy or ulterior motive other than the racist misogynist homophobic asshole who refuses to be told "no" is throwing a massive temper tantrum because his ex-wives hate him, his children hate him, he was forced to buy the company, and he got kicked out of PayPal 20 years ago and hasn't gotten over the bruised ego since then.
Do you REALLY think the guy who got so mad the President of the United States issuing an official statement from the White House got more attention than him so had the engineers boost his ranking in the algorithm enough so that he dominated everybody's feeds for a day to get more attention on him could actually plot a real conspiracy?
Or does Occam's Razor say he's just a privileged little shit who is indulging in his racism and transphobia while pandering to the fascist sycophants who keep licking his boots?
#twitter#elon musk#twitter fail#seriously the dude's not destroying Twitter as part of some grand scheme#He's destroying Twitter because he's a massive fuck-up who never got Daddy's approval and is making it everyone else's problem

having a hard time with this rework shit because ive been feeling weird about being so invested in the IP of a company that very clearly does not actually give a shit about the story and worldbuilding like As A Whole, this thing with viktor being only the latest in a long line of proof. and ive been meaning to try and unchain myself and get into something new because like it just feels so Bad.
but on the other hand with viktor in particular as a character who resonated with me really deeply and the fact that he's now gone from that IP... now all that's left is the people who care about him and his story, and soon it'll be the case for the rest of that pnz squad that i Also care about and it's like.. if we stop caring then they disappear for realsies now. oh my god disproportional emotional response
#.txt#and part of me is like oh my god find some real problems.#but another part feels so massively betrayed by the lack of respect to storytelling as an artform like the POINT is to connect emotionally#is that so wrong. is that so cringe. so you cried at an artsy movie can i not be sad about this also?

I won’t lie gang this chapter is killing me
#my problem is that I told myself that I would write everything with link and proxi first so that I didn’t half ass their moments again#BUT! I am having so much trouble writing them that my motivation tanked and I’ve been stuck for like 2 weeks now#and frankly I really do just want to write the spirit stuff#and yeah. that’s the answer isn’t it. put down the link and proxi scenes and just start the spirit stuff now#get the juices flowing again and maybe go insane with the boys#me rambling#lu ctb#so I decided to take a week to chill before starting my job hunt and I hoped that would mean I could go crazy with my writing#but I’m just. not burn out or crashing out. but a secret third thing. something that just makes it really hard for me to want to write#tbh I have a massive fear of change which is why I stuck with that job for so long when it made me so unhappy#so now that I’m being forced into a change some part of me needs to lock down somehow#I think I deserve a crash out. I should be crashing out right now#overall I have been SO MATURE about this whole thing and no one appreciates that but me#I want to take everyone by the shoulders and be like ‘look at me!!! I’m not in a depressive episode!!! I haven’t had a giant crying session#!!!!’ I am reacting like a reasonable human being which is something I have never done before#also I love rubber ducking my problems in the tags. my original post was so self pitying and I sat there like ‘ew Frankie this is not the#person you want to be’ and so I started typing out what my problem with ctb was and bam. got my answer#adjusting post accordingly

If I had a nickel for everytime my laptop became useless in a critical part of my education, I'd have two nickels, which is not a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, and I HATE IT.
#my little laptop I use for class and which also contains the only copy of my 1/4 finished bachelor thesis#and a much more time sensitive term paper#just decided it no longer posesses a hard drive#like we used a boot usb and tried to get those two files out that way#but it couldn't find the internal drive#of course part of the problem is that being basically a tablet with a keyboard said laptop doesn't seem to HAVE a proper hard drive#which makes file recovery a lot harder#if anyone is interested in how this has happened to me twice#last time was my fault#I spilled coffee on my laptop five days before high school final exams#but at least that time I had the material backed up in cloud#now I didn't#Like I didn't lose. EVERYTHING#but it is a massive step back on things I'm alrready way behind on

Low quality books that appear to be AI generated are making their way into public libraries via their digital catalogs, forcing librarians who are already understaffed to either sort through a functionally infinite number of books to determine what is written by humans and what is generated by AI, or to spend taxpayer dollars to provide patrons with information they don’t realize is AI-generated.
With Hoopla, librarians have to opt into Hoopla’s entire catalog, then pay for whatever their customers choose to borrow from that catalog. The only way librarians can limit what Hoopla books their customers can borrow is by setting a limit on the price of books. For example, a library can use Hoopla but make it so their customers can only borrow books that cost the library $5 per use.
“Investigating these authors, their book covers, their social media, etc takes A LOT OF TIME, especially with the volume of questionable material increasing month to month (and that's not including the sheer amount of legitimate books published each month in adult fiction that I'm looking at),” one librarian who asked to remain anonymous so she could talk openly about her job, told me. “Is it the best use of my time doing this work on top of my other duties when customers may or may not care? And with the rising multitudes of AI generated content, will there come a point where it just ‘is what it is?’”
This type of low quality, AI generated content, is what we at 404 Media and others have come to call AI slop. Librarians, whose job it is in part to curate what books their community can access, have been dealing with similar problems in the publishing industry for years, and have a different name for it: vendor slurry. While the term now encompasses what seems like AI-generated content as well, it predates the rise of generative AI, and also refers to the glut of low quality, often self-published ebooks or book “summaries” that are common on Hoopla. As some librarians told me, the sheer quantity of books in Hoopla’s service makes it seem more valuable because it offers such a large number of books, but in reality that number is misleadingly inflated by this slurry.
Several of the librarians I talked to said that they are worried about discussing [the problems raised by Hoopla's weak, unclear selection policies, including the 2022 inclusion of explicitly white nationalist texts,] because of the growing hostility towards libraries and groups like Moms for Liberty demanding that books about LGBTQ rights, race, and ethnicity be removed from libraries. One the one hand, librarians want to curate their collections and make sure their patrons are getting access to quality information. On the other hand, they don’t want people to think that they are trying to censor what materials patrons can access in way that’s comparable to what organizations like Moms for Liberty want. None of the librarians I talked to suggested the AI-generated content needed to be banned from Hoopla and libraries only because it is AI-generated. It might have its place, but it needs to be clearly labeled, and more importantly, provide borrowers with quality information.
#404media yaaaaay#public libraries#part of the reason this happens is that libraries have a very hard time applying meaningful vendor pressure#if you look at the ALA's 2023 digital public library ecosystem report it's really clear that there are very few vendors in this space#libby has a massive monopoly (>90% of libraries with ebooks use libby) but hoopla is also extremely popular in part because it's owned#by midwest tape which has been the primary library supplier of A/V materials for decades. libraries are niche small & underfunded-#& patrons want ebooks! ebook usage skyrocketed in 2020 & hasn't really gone back down. so hoopla is a convenient solution#it's EXPENSIVE for a lot of libraries - if you want to know why there's a monthly borrowing limit or a daily borrowing cap that's why#but it's very convenient & many libraries don't have staff that work on just digital collections; it's just a new responsibility#real time crunch / poor options problem. anyway idk what options look like internationally & i would be interested to find out#but this is why i stan cloudlibrary; they are A Competitor. the real solution ofc is to have a genuinely publicly owned & run platform#but that won't happen almost anywhere. NYPL does have an opensource app for some of their collections tho which is cool#also this article is being nice. the AI slop problem is plausibly also on the shelf! that shouldn't happen if you have enough time#to do good collection development but some libraries don't have the right staff. especially likely in spanish language collections#that are being purchased by people who don't speak spanish. in my experience. it's a mess

I wanna clarify that I do think Caitlyn and Vi are very messy and Caitlyn has made many a bad decision, but I love what they bring to the narrative and CaitVi’s implications as a whole.
Everyone has an excuse for why they did this or that, but they still made that mistake. And they keep on keeping on. I think that’s nice
#Some of the more……… idk aggressive ? Caitvi defenders I’m a little iffy about#I get why we feel the need to be on the defensive after seeing how poorly they were received by some#But uh acting like Caitlyn weaponizing Hextech and the grey isn’t crazy work is a choice lmao#Acting like vi becoming a cop wasn’t a massive miscalculation on her part is a choice#Some of their politics are just so weird. Are these tags too shady? I’m fr not trying to be shady at all#Just come kumbaya with me guys we’re a big happy family that murder in occasion it’s chill just a little purge as a treat#To slay or not to slay#Not main tagging this that feels like I’m trynna cause problems

#okay random story time i don't know why im narrating this or how i even stumbled upon this memory rn#but i generally do sad vents in the tags and for a change this is a funny one#so back in highschool (i say highschool but i mean junior college) i used to visit this park near my house a lot#i was an sg kid back then and the thing about parks there is that they're kinda beach-parks and they have the best cycling/running tracks#they're also really massive parks so i used to go often. sometimes bicycling. other times walking. yeah. the park was like my sanctuary#anyway. there are quite a few bike rental areas in the park and there was a cute lil shop next to this one particular rental place#and they sold like biscuits and water and icecreams and stuff and i went there a lot#and on one particular day i went there and there was this guy around my age part timing at that shop#now again this might be culture specific bc i dont see it in india but part timing in uni/pre-uni is pretty common is sg#a lot of shops and restaurants employ teenagers to twenty something ppl for part time jobs... anyway im just adding context#point is that i had walked to the park with my mum that day and she told me to go buy a couple icecreams so i went to the shop#and i saw this guy around my age and like. not to be a simp but this dude was so pretty?#like he saw someone had come to the counter so he looked up and shot a smile and i thought i got slapped by sunlight#i could spend the next several lines going on about his pretty tan skin and his glowing raven eyes but this is pathetic enough so ill stop#anyway he saw me and smiled really wide (customer service smile- i thought to myself) and i smiled back and asked for icecreams or whatever#and then this guy started getting chatty right. so he was all 'you come here (to the park) often right? ive seen you with your bike a lot'#see now. the problem with me is that i always think im bothering people. this poor dude was attempting to make conversation#and i was replying with one word answers#and i wasn't even realizing that he didnt want that. bc he kept asking more questions and i. kept. shutting them down.#then when he gave me the icecream he was all 'are you here alone? icecream alone is no fun... i could keep you company if you want..?'#which. he was being really cute about right. but because im so fucking dense i was all 'oh no i came with my mom actually'#and he went 'aw man' in this really cute but faux sad way which i didnt understand at the time and i left and then#after three full fucking days. i realized this man was tryna hit on me?#and then i went to the park like a week later and he was gone. poof. i even thought of asking the uncle in charge of that place#then i got too embarrassed and chickened out#yeah so turns out my neurodivergence neutralizes any sort of rizz that comes my way#i could've been chilling with a cute boyf rn but no😩 this is my destiny#megumi in the tags
