Honestly, I love it when characters relapse. When someone who’s gotten over their anger issues falls into a situation so out of their depth they fall back on their old habits. When someone who’s learned to open up becomes a recluse again in order to cope with something outside their control.
There’s just something so horrible, so toxic, about watching a character grow and then slip back into their old selves in order to cope, bc you know they still care, that they’re the same inside, but watching them hurt so hard they don’t know what else to do brings a sense of catharsis.

victor is one of the most psychotic characters i have ever read in literature and it all feels both surprisingly accurate and relatable given the time period; i have been meaning to make a proper analysis on victor's psychotic symptoms for awhile now, but have, ironically, been delayed due to my own psychotic symptoms, so here's more of an informal list--
i'll be breaking down victor's: 1. negative symptoms (loss of functioning)
2. positive symptoms (hallucinations)
3. disorganized thinking and speech/behavior
victor's psychotic symptoms, as well as his initial psychotic break during the creation of the OG creature, are brought upon by the stressors of creating the creature(s), both before, during and after the creation process. the first of these symptoms were negative symptoms.
negative symptoms of psychosis are a loss (thus--"negative") or reduction of normal functioning, and can include restricted emotional expression, lack of speech or monotone speech, difficulty thinking, reduced motivation and/or desire to initiate activities, reduced socialization and social withdrawal, and an inability or decreased ability to experience pleasure. they most commonly occur in the prodromal (initial) phase before the acute phase (characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and confused thinking) and in the recovery phase, which is true of victor's case.
andehonia (lack of pleasure):
"...but I did not watch the blossom or the expanding leaves—sights which before always yielded me supreme delight, so deeply was I engrossed in my occupation... But my enthusiasm was checked by my anxiety... I became nervous to a most painful degree" (paranoia, too) -- Vol I, Chapter III
"It was a most beautiful season; never did the fields bestow a more plentiful harvest, or the vines yield a more luxuriant vintage: but my eyes were insensible to the charms of nature" -- Vol I, Chapter III (1818)
"By very slow degrees, and with frequent relapses, that alarmed and grieved my friend, I recovered. I remember the first time I became capable of observing outward objects with any kind of pleasure..." -- Vol I, Chapter IV (1818)
asociality (social withdrawal) & alogia (impoverished speech):
"And the same feelings which made me neglect the scenes around me caused me also to forget those friends who were so many miles absent, and whom I had not seen for so long a time. I knew my silence disquieted them..." Vol I, Chapter III (1818)
"Study had before secluded me from the intercourse of my fellow-creatures, and rendered me unsocial..." -- Vol I, Chapter V (1818)
"This state of mind preyed upon my health, which had entirely recovered from the first shock it had sustained. I shunned the face of man; all sound of joy or complacency was torture to me; solitude was my only consolation—deep, dark, death-like solitude." -- Vol II, Chapter I (1818)
additionally, and in general, victor becomes incapable of initiating activities (avolition) while being cared for by henry at ingolstadt.
victor hallucinates several times throughout the novel. these hallucinations are almost exclusively visual, and primarily of the creature:
“'Do not ask me,” cried I, putting my hands before my eyes, for I thought I saw the dreaded spectre glide into the room; “he can tell.—Oh, save me! save me!” I imagined that the monster seized me; I struggled furiously, and fell down in a fit." -- Vol I, Chapter IV (1818)
"The form of the monster on whom I had bestowed existence was for ever before my eyes, and I raved incessantly concerning him..." -- Vol I, Chapter IV (1818)
"I saw around me nothing but a dense and frightful darkness, penetrated by no light but the glimmer of two eyes that glared upon me. Sometimes they were the expressive eyes of Henry, languishing in death, the dark orbs nearly covered by the lids, and the long black lashes that fringed them; sometimes it was the watery clouded eyes of the monster, as I first saw them in my chamber at Ingolstadt..." -- Vol II, Chapter IV (1818)
"All pleasures of earth and sky passed before me like a dream, and that thought only had to me the reality of life. Can you wonder, that sometimes a kind of insanity possessed me, or that I saw continually about me a multitude of filthy animals inflicting on me incessant torture, that often extorted screams and bitter groans?" -- Vol II, Chapter IX (1818)
"Sometimes I entreated my attendants to assist me in the destruction of the fiend by whom I was tormented; and, at others, I felt the fingers of the monster already grasping my neck, and screamed aloud with agony and terror." -- Vol III, Chapter IV (1818)
beyond that, victor's positive symptoms also include delusions of guilt, grandeur and persecution. however, this is complex enough that it warrants its own separate post. for another time... (edit: find it here)
victor also experiences disorganized behavior, behaviors that are inconsistent, contradictory, or don't fit the situation; for victor, the most obvious of which is catatonia, a symptom of psychosis characterized by abnormal movements, behaviors, and withdrawal. he demonstrates both akinetic (staying still, appearing unresponsive, staring blankly, lack of speech) and excited/hyperkinetic (moving in a pointless/repetitive way, appearing agitated or delirious, pacing, etc) catatonia.
"Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room, and continued a long time traversing my bed-chamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep...I took refuge in the court-yard belonging to the house which I inhabited; where I remained during the rest of the night, walking up and down in the greatest agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing each sound as if it were to announce the approach of the demoniacal corpse to which I had so miserably given life." -- Vol I, Chapter IV (1818)
"...my spirits became unequal; I grew restless and nervous. Every moment I feared to meet my persecutor. Sometimes I sat with my eyes fixed on the ground, fearing to raise them lest they should encounter the object which I so much dreaded to behold." -- Vol II, Chapter II (1818)
"Then the appearance of death was distant, although the wish was ever present to my thoughts; and I often sat for hours motionless and speechless, wishing for some mighty revolution that might bury me and my destroyer in its ruins." -- Chapter 21 (1831)
he also displays inappropriate/unusual reactions, another example of disorganized behavior:
"I was unable to contain myself. It was not joy only that possessed me; I felt my flesh tingle with excess of sensitiveness, and my pulse beat rapidly. I was unable to remain for a single instant in the same place; I jumped over the chairs, clapped my hands, and laughed aloud... my loud, unrestrained, heartless laughter, frightened and astonished [Clerval]" -- Vol I, Chapter IV (1818)
victor shows disorganized speech through his "ravings" several times and there's quite a few examples of this but i can't be bothered to pull more quotes. here's just one:
"A fever succeeded this. I lay for two months on the point of death: my ravings, as I afterwards heard, were frightful; I called myself the murderer of William, of Justine, and of Clerval." -- Vol III, Chapter IV (1818)
as a side-note, in the 1800s, the term "fever" was used loosely in comparison to its modern definition, and the health of the mind and body was often viewed as interconnected--thus victor's "fevers" after periods of high stress that triggered psychosis—while being nursed back to health by henry, during his time in prison, etc.—could easily be viewed as mental illness rather than an actual physical sickness, or some combination thereof.
lastly, victor experiences disorganized thinking, which includes racing thoughts, flight of ideas, confusion, trouble keeping track of thoughts, difficulty concentrating, time processing disturbances, etc.
in general, victor experiences dream-like perceptions that leads to difficulty being present, concentrating, and processing reality, what he himself refers to as “strange thoughts” (Vol II, Chapter IX, 1818). for example:
“All pleasures of earth and sky passed before me like a dream, and that thought only had to me the reality of life.” – Vol II, Chapter IX (1818)
additionally, victor is known to lose time and “awaken to understanding” weeks or months later several times:
“What then became of me? I know not; I lost sensation, and chains and darkness were the only objects that pressed upon me…by degrees I gained a clear conception of my miseries and situation, and was then released from my prison. For they had called me mad; and during many months, as I understood, a solitary cell had been my habitation.” – Vol II, Chapter VI (1818)
“But I was doomed to live; and, in two months, found myself as awaking from a dream, in a prison…It was morning, I remember, when I thus awoke to understanding: I had forgotten the particulars of what had happened, and only felt as if some great misfortune had suddenly overwhelmed me.” — Vol II, Chapter IV (1818)
“I seemed to have lost all soul or sensation but for this one pursuit. It was indeed but a passing trance, that only made me feel with renewed acuteness so soon as, the unnatural stimulus ceasing to operate, I had returned to my old habits.” — Vol I, Chapter III
he also demonstrates flight of ideas, a thought disorder that involves rapid shifting of thoughts that are expressed in language. people with flight of ideas may speak quickly and jump between ideas that are not connected in a way that is difficult to follow, illogical, or nonsensical. this occurs just before alphonse visits him in prison:
“I know not by what chain of thought the idea presented itself, but it instantly darted into my mind that the murderer had come to mock at my misery, and taunt me with the death of Clerval, as a new incitement for me to comply with his hellish desires… “Oh! take him away! I cannot see him; for God’s sake, do not let him enter!’” — Vol III, Chapter IV
to which mr. kirwin “regards [victor] with a troubled countenance” in response.
aaand that's a wrap.
there's no real point to all this i just wanted to outline most of his symptoms so i could have it all in one place. i'll probably expand on this sometime with more actual thoughts and ideas of substance as well as building on the implications of a reading of frankenstein where victor experiences psychosis (and how actually acknowledging victor's mental illness forces a much more sympathetic interpretation of victor... which is why people tend to talk around it). do with this what you will!

Anorexia Recovery Is Not For The Faint Of Heart
Hello. My name is Kristen Gordon. I am now 37 years old, and five years into Anorexia Recovery. I have relapsed, I believe two or three times, and this is the farthest I have come.
To begin,. my heart goes out to anyone suffering from physical and/or mental disabilities. I am happy that people are spreading their personal stories. However, the amount of recognition and support (including financial), is slim. It's slim compared to that same attention, given to fame and wealth. If only we could tap into the love of those, such as Jesus Christ or Buddha, would the world be a better place.
I am here to help awaken all those who do not understand, or wish to understand, people struggling with health issues that can persist many years. In my case, it is Anorexia that has prevented me from living a normal life. I don't always regret having had this disease, but I can't say that it has been easy. The recovery process, especially experiencing a wave of exhaustion, years later, can seem daunting.
In the beginning, it is much easier to let go of everything, except beating this god awful illness. The symptoms experienced are far from pleasant, but recovery becomes your main priority. People support you, you are determined, and have a sense of hope that a child on Christmas Eve has.
As you begin to heal, you take on more responsibilities. This is good, this means you are healing. However, for many people in recovery, it can also create a snowball effect. Sometimes, we think we can do more, but it is not in our best interest. Sometimes, it's hard to tell when we are fully recovered. We can chalk up our symptoms to anxiety and depression later in the process. We can ignore the days we get sick frequently. We can interpret high levels of stress, inability to multitask, and energy shifts, as "adjusting to life".
How long do we accept this as a normal part of integrating back into society? How long do we push ourselves, and accept long term symptoms as a "normal" part of the process. No - I am here to tell you it is NOT normal. Yes, there are adjustment periods in life. However, when you are recovered enough from malnutrition, the ability to adapt to life, is a process that is not overwhelming. It can be not the most pleasant situation. However, when the mind and body are in a healthy place, you are able to handle (with greater ease) what life throws at you.
I have experienced this "phenomenon". I call it a phenomenon, because this phase, this feeling, has not been permanent for me. It has, though, opened my eyes, to a life I have never experienced before. A life of peace, balance, and most of all, optimal health. Once I felt that, I thought that I was "recovered". What I didn't understand, was that I shifted from that feeling, back into states of stress, depression, and sickness, all over again. I accepted it as part of the healing process. That one day, I will feel that peace again.
As wisdom slowly creeps upon me once again, I can say I was foolish. It's hard to accept that I needed more time to recover, when life never seems to slow down. People look at you, restored weight and all, and judge. Family members stop helping because they think you are mentally unstable (which IS STILL a health issue). Money from your account draws nearer to zero every day. Isolation becomes your best friend, as you'd rather die alone, than with those who criticize you. Recovering from an eating disorder is hard enough in and of itself.
Thankfully, I do have a wonderful mom who supports this refeed and rest process. "Quasi recovery" is what they call it. You're close to a full recovery, but there are still symptoms of malnutrition that prevent you from living your best life. Now, we aren't rich, and my mom is nearing retirement. I've been off work for a little less than a year. In addition, my body kind of "shut down" since April, with little energy to do most things. I push through chores and help my mom and dad as much as I can. That, is exhausting enough. I will make another post about symptoms later. This is only the beginning.
What do I wish from this? I don't know. I have a lot of compassion for myself, and my family (my dad had a stroke/cancer). We do this alone. We have little help from anyone. We are all seen as black sheep in our entire family, especially, me. No one knows what it's like to heal the body from severe malnutrition. No one cares or wants to understand. Most of my family, unfortunately, live very selfishly. I have accepted that. I love them for who they are, but it's very lonely. It haunts my mom more than anyone. I wish I could heal faster, so I can shove it in everyone's face. I wish I could ease my mom's worries about me. I wish I could heal my dad. I wish I could make others understand that recovery isn't for the faint of heart. I can't. All I can do is have faith, hope, and keep eating my way out. I will keep trying, keep putting recovery first, and pray that things for my family and I will get better.
P.S. thank you for taking the time to read this. I will continue sharing my journey for those of you who need companionship and relatability. I am here for you, as much as I can be. I love you.

hi, really cool to see that you're recovering from long covid (best of luck !!)
I got pretty mild covid about a month ago and since have been just not feeling great (fatigue, pain, a bad cough, ect). I was wondering what your symptoms were for long covid since I wasn't sure if it's something I should get checked for
It’s normal to be tired if it was a month ago, I think you should start to worry if you’re still tired after 3 months.
What you must be careful about is physical exercise. As long as you’re tired refrain from doing any physical effort. Long covid gives post-exertional malaise and it can trigger relapses that last for literal months. My first relapse was triggered by a 10 minutes slow run, after which I fainted. And then I was bedridden for several weeks.
It’s not only physical, it’s also neurological : you can have coordination issues, memory issues, trouble finding your words, inability to tolerate light or noise, allergies, anxiety etc etc all linked to post exertional malaise.
If you get checked, it’s possible doctors will tell you - like they told me - that you should get into a physical rehabilitation process : don’t do it. You need to use the same technique that people with chronic fatigue use : pacing. Determine the level of physical activity you can have without your symptoms worsening. And determine how long you need to rest when you’ve done something out of the ordinary.
It’s a slow recovery and mine isn’t over, but I really want to stress that in the case of long covid, physical activity is really dangerous as long as you have symptoms. Take care !

Why Rehabilitation Is a Crucial Step Towards Recovery in India!
Addiction is not just a personal battle—it is a complex, multi-layered condition that impacts families, workplaces, and communities. Yet, in India, seeking structured help for recovery is still not the norm. Many people rely on self-control, spiritual retreats, or unverified remedies to overcome substance dependency. While these methods may offer temporary relief, lasting recovery needs more than just willpower. It requires a focused, medically supervised, and emotionally supported environment—something only a professional Rehabilitation Centre in India can provide.
Understanding What ‘Recovery’ Actually Means
Recovery is not just about quitting drugs or alcohol. It’s about rebuilding a life that supports sobriety—emotionally, socially, and physically. This means restoring mental health, repairing relationships, learning coping mechanisms, and sometimes even starting over financially. Without a structured setting, this process can feel overwhelming or even impossible. That’s where the best rehab in India makes a significant difference—it provides the right environment, tools, and guidance to start over safely and sustainably.
Why Detox Alone Is Not Enough
Many people assume that detox—removing substances from the body—is the end of treatment. In reality, it's just the first stage. Detox clears the physical dependence but does little to address the emotional triggers, behavioral patterns, or underlying trauma behind addiction. This is why relapse is common when detox is done in isolation.
A comprehensive program at the best rehabilitation centre in India continues long after detox, focusing on psychological therapy, skill-building, and relapse prevention techniques.
Structured Routine and Support System
One of the primary benefits of rehabilitation is structure. Addiction thrives in chaos—irregular routines, emotional instability, and unpredictable environments. A rehab centre provides a stable daily schedule, healthy meals, scheduled therapy sessions, and recreational time. This balance helps individuals reset not only their bodies but also their minds.
Over time, the discipline and support within a Rehabilitation Centre in India begin to replace harmful habits with healthier alternatives, building the foundation for long-term recovery.
Access to Professional Counseling and Psychiatric Care
Addiction is often linked to untreated mental health issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, or bipolar disorder. Without professional help, these conditions can either trigger substance use or worsen during recovery. At the best rehab in India, licensed psychologists and psychiatrists assess each patient’s emotional and cognitive needs, offering therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), or trauma-informed care.
These services are essential not just for recovery but for emotional self-awareness and stability post-rehab.
A Safe Space to Heal Without Judgment
In the outside world, those struggling with addiction often face criticism, social isolation, or shame. These factors can slow recovery and deepen emotional damage. Rehabilitation centres offer a non-judgmental, confidential space where individuals are treated with dignity and compassion. Every person in a rehab facility—whether staff or fellow patient—understands the journey and respects the struggle.
This emotional safety is often what makes the best rehabilitation centre in India not just a facility but a refuge for healing.
Family Involvement and Education
In Indian families, addiction is often misunderstood. Loved ones may feel helpless, angry, or even ashamed. Yet, their involvement is key to recovery. A good rehabilitation centre doesn’t isolate the family—it educates and involves them. Through family therapy, loved ones learn about addiction as a disease, how to support recovery, and how to set boundaries.
This inclusive model is what sets apart a truly effective Rehabilitation Centre in India, as it promotes healing beyond just the individual.
Preventing Relapse Through Aftercare Planning
Recovery doesn’t end when a person walks out of rehab. In fact, the most challenging part begins outside—when they must navigate real-life triggers, stress, and relationships without falling back. A responsible rehab doesn’t just release a person after treatment. It builds a relapse prevention plan: regular follow-ups, access to support groups, online therapy options, and emergency response strategies.
This continued care is what defines the best rehab in India—one that invests in recovery long after the initial program ends.
Tackling the Urban-Rural Gap in Access to Rehabilitation
Despite the growing demand, quality rehab services are still concentrated in metro cities. Rural and tier-2 areas lack awareness, access, and infrastructure. Government and private healthcare must collaborate to expand quality care options across India. Teletherapy, mobile units, and local outreach programs are some ways to reach those who are silently struggling.
Until the best rehabilitation centre in India is accessible to every individual—regardless of income or location—recovery will remain a privilege, not a right.
Rehabilitation is not a last resort—it’s a life-saving step that should be encouraged and normalized. Structured care, professional guidance, and emotional healing are essential for anyone trying to break free from addiction. For those seeking a compassionate, clinically sound, and future-focused recovery path, Zorba Care offers programs that treat addiction at its roots and empower individuals to rebuild their lives with strength and dignity.

Is Alcohol Rehab in Ahmedabad the Fresh Start You Need?
In a city that thrives on culture, commerce, and community, Ahmedabad’s bustling pace often masks a quieter struggle that many individuals face: alcohol addiction. Whether it's a slow spiral or a long-standing dependency, the path to recovery can often feel daunting. If you or someone you know is trapped in this cycle, it may be time to explore a transformative solution — but is alcohol rehab in Ahmedabad really the fresh start you're searching for?
Let’s dive deep into what alcohol rehab truly offers, the signs that it’s time to seek help, and how a supportive environment like Zorba Care can make all the difference.
Understanding Alcohol Addiction: It’s More Than Just a Habit
Alcohol dependency isn’t just about excessive drinking — it’s a complex mental and physical health challenge. Over time, the body builds a tolerance, and the mind forms a dependency. What starts as social drinking or stress relief can quickly morph into a destructive cycle.
Some common signs of alcohol addiction include:
Increased tolerance requiring more alcohol for the same effect
Frequent blackouts or memory loss
Neglecting responsibilities at home or work
Failed attempts to quit or cut down
Relationship conflicts due to drinking
If these signs resonate with you or a loved one, seeking help is not a weakness — it’s a brave and necessary step toward healing.
Why Choose an Alcohol Rehab in Ahmedabad?
Ahmedabad is emerging as a hub for progressive healthcare, including mental wellness and de-addiction centers. Opting for alcohol rehab in Ahmedabad offers several benefits:
Accessibility: Located within the city, you don’t need to travel far for expert care.
Culturally Sensitive Programs: Rehab centers understand local languages, family dynamics, and societal pressures.
Holistic Healing: From yoga and meditation to evidence-based therapy, centers here integrate multiple healing practices for better outcomes.
What Happens in an Alcohol Rehabilitation Program?
Rehabilitation is a step-by-step process designed to treat both the body and the mind. A comprehensive alcohol rehab program in Ahmedabad typically includes:
1. Medical Detoxification
The first stage focuses on safely eliminating alcohol from your system under medical supervision. It’s crucial because withdrawal symptoms can be severe or even life-threatening without proper care.
2. Psychological Therapy
Addiction is deeply rooted in thought patterns and emotions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing help individuals understand the "why" behind their addiction.
3. Group & Family Counseling
Being surrounded by people on the same journey fosters connection and encouragement. Family sessions also rebuild trust and communication between loved ones.
4. Aftercare & Relapse Prevention
Recovery doesn’t end after detox. Good rehab centers offer relapse prevention strategies, ongoing therapy, and sober living support to ensure long-term success.
Why Zorba Care is a Leading Choice for Alcohol Rehab in Ahmedabad
With a reputation for excellence and a team of experienced professionals, Zorba Care has become a preferred destination for those seeking lasting recovery from alcohol addiction.
What sets Zorba Care apart?
Personalized Care Plans: No two recovery journeys are the same. Zorba Care designs tailor-made programs based on individual needs.
Luxury & Comfort: Their modern, serene facilities create an environment of safety and calm that fosters healing.
24/7 Support: A dedicated medical and counseling team is always available to address emergencies or emotional needs.
Focus on Mental Health: Beyond addiction, Zorba Care addresses underlying mental health issues like depression, anxiety, or trauma — the real roots of substance abuse.
The Role of Family and Community in Recovery
One of the unique aspects of rehabilitation in India is the strong involvement of family in the healing process. In Indian culture, families play a vital role in recovery — both as a support system and as individuals who may also need to heal.
Ahmedabad-based centers like Zorba Care emphasize family integration in therapy and support groups, making recovery a collective effort.
Success Stories: Real People, Real Recovery
Time and again, individuals who felt lost and hopeless have reclaimed their lives through structured rehab programs. Whether it's a working professional battling silent addiction or a young adult spiraling into dependency, rehab has proven to be a turning point.
Their stories are a testament that no matter how deep the struggle, recovery is always possible with the right help.
How to Take the First Step
Choosing to seek help is the most difficult, yet most powerful decision you can make. If you’re considering alcohol rehab in Ahmedabad, don’t wait for things to get worse. The sooner treatment begins, the better the chances of full recovery.
Whether you want to know more about treatment options or need a confidential consultation, reach out to Zorba Care today. Their team is ready to walk with you every step of the way.
Conclusion: Your Fresh Start Begins Now
Alcohol addiction doesn’t define you — your strength to overcome it does. With the right support, professional care, and a nurturing environment, recovery isn’t just possible — it’s powerful. If you’ve been wondering whether alcohol rehab in Ahmedabad is right for you, now you know the answer. It might just be the life-changing decision you’ve been waiting for.

The Mechanics of Opioid Withdrawal: What Happens to the Body During the Process
The physical withdraw process from opioids is a physically and emotionally grueling process, but understanding the medical mechanisms behind it can provide clarity and insight for those experiencing it or supporting someone through it. The human body undergoes significant biochemical changes when deprived of opioids, which have been suppressing natural processes for extended periods. This article explores the stages of withdrawal, the physiological effects on the body, and the medical explanations behind the symptoms, citing peer-reviewed medical studies to ensure accuracy.
The affect on the body from opiates
Opioids, including prescription painkillers like oxycodone and illicit drugs like heroin, act on the brain’s opioid receptors, particularly your brains opioid receptors. These drugs mimic natural endorphins, producing pain relief and euphoria while also suppressing other essential functions like respiration, digestion, and hormone regulation (The New England Journal of Medicine).
Over time, the body adapts to the presence of opioids by reducing its own production of endorphins and increasing opioid receptor density, leading to dependence. When opioid intake ceases, the body struggles to regain balance, leading to withdrawal symptoms.
A Timeline of Symptoms and Medical Impact
Withdrawal symptoms vary in severity and duration depending on factors like opioid type, duration of use, and overall health. Generally, withdrawal follows a predictable timeline:
Stage 1: Early Withdrawal
Anxiety and agitation
Muscle aches
Increased tearing and runny nose
Sweating
Insomnia
The onset of withdrawal symptoms aligns with the half-life of the drug used. Short-acting opioids like heroin result in symptoms within 5 to 10 hours, while longer-acting opioids like methadone may take up to 36 hours.
At this stage, the body begins its frantic attempt to regulate neurotransmitter activity without the artificial stimulation of opioids. The locus coeruleus, a brain region responsible for regulating arousal and autonomic functions, becomes hyperactive, leading to early symptoms like anxiety, restlessness, and muscle aches.
Stage 2: Peak Withdrawal (24-72 Hours After Last Use)
Vomiting, and/or diarrhea
Abdominal cramps
Pupil dilation
Rapid heart rate and high blood pressure
Achy muscles
During this phase, the autonomic nervous system is in overdrive. Without opioids suppressing its activity, it floods the body with norepinephrine, causing symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, and heightened pain sensitivity.
Simultaneously, the gastrointestinal system, previously slowed by opioid use, rebounds aggressively, leading to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Dehydration is a significant risk during this phase and requires careful management with fluids and electrolytes.
Stage 3: Subacute Withdrawal (3-7 Days After Last Use)
Fatigue
Depression and mood swings
Mental fixation
Insomnia
Anxiety
As the body begins to stabilize, withdrawal symptoms start to subside, but emotional and psychological effects linger. The hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, which regulates stress hormones, remains dysregulated, contributing to nervousness and general sadness.
At this stage, cravings intensify due to depleted dopamine levels. The brain's typical reward process, which has been artificially stimulated by opioid use, struggles to regain equilibrium, leading to anhedonia—an inability to experience pleasure from natural rewards.
Stage 4: Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (Weeks to Months After Last Use Depending the Drug)
Intermittent cravings
Persistent fatigue
Emotional instability
Sleep disturbances
Post acute withdrawal can last for months or even years, making long-term support crucial for recovery. Studies have shown that dopamine receptor density remains altered for an extended period after opioid cessation, making individuals more vulnerable to relapse.
Medical Options for Opiate Withdrawal
Effective management of withdrawal requires a combination of medical, psychological, and lifestyle interventions. Some key approaches include:
1. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Suboxone: A partial opioid agonist that alleviates symptoms without producing a high (Volkow et al., 2014, The American Journal of Psychiatry).
Methadone: A long-acting opioid that stabilizes withdrawal but requires medical supervision.
Non-opioid medications: that reduce autonomic symptoms like sweating, rapid heartbeat, and agitation.
2. Supportive Care
Hydration & Nourishment: Dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting is a major concern.
Vitamins: Magnesium and potassium help with muscle cramping and restlessness.
Therapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is shown to improve long-term recovery outcomes (McHugh et al., 2010, Addictive Behaviors).
The Evolution of Opiate Withdrawal Treatment
Historically, opioid withdrawal was treated with harsh, ineffective methods. In the early 20th century, detoxification involved abrupt cessation, often without medical support, leading to high rates of relapse and unnecessary suffering.
By the 1960s, methadone maintenance therapy became a standard treatment, offering a safer alternative to cold turkey withdrawal. More recently, suboxone and Subutex have provided effective options with fewer side effects, improving outcomes for those in recovery.
In addition, natural remedies—such as mindfulness, and dietary detox—have gained traction as complementary therapies. Research suggests that activities like yoga and meditation can help regulate the HPA axis, reducing stress and improving emotional stability during early to mid withdrawal period.
The Road Ahead: A New Understanding of Withdrawal and Recovery
Opiate withdrawal is a profound physiological and psychological process that underscores the complexity of addiction. It is not simply a matter of willpower but a medical condition requiring comprehensive treatment. Advances in neuroscience and addiction medicine continue to refine our understanding of withdrawal, paving the way for more effective, compassionate treatment strategies.
For those experiencing withdrawal, the journey is daunting, but with proper support, long-term recovery is achievable. Understanding the biological processes at play can empower individuals to seek the help they need and approach their recovery with informed determination.

What are the Psychological Effects of Long-Term Jaundice Treatment?
Tumblr media
Jaundice is a medical condition that causes the skin and eyes to turn yellow, resulting from the buildup of bilirubin in the bloodstream. While jaundice itself is often associated with liver dysfunction, its long-term treatment can have various psychological effects on patients. Dr. Vinoth Kumar, a renowned expert in jaundice treatment at GEM Hospital in Coimbatore, has helped countless patients manage their jaundice symptoms, but he also emphasizes the importance of addressing the emotional and mental challenges associated with long-term treatment.
For patients undergoing Jaundice treatment in Coimbatore, it's essential to consider the psychological impacts as part of a holistic approach. At GEM Hospital, our team is committed to providing not just physical care but also the support needed to help patients cope with the emotional toll of prolonged medical interventions. If you're experiencing jaundice symptoms or require guidance on managing your condition, you can schedule an appointment for Jaundice treatment in Coimbatore here.
Understanding the Psychological Impact of Long-Term Jaundice Treatment
While jaundice itself is a physical condition, the ongoing treatment and management can affect a person’s mental health. These psychological effects can vary based on factors such as the severity of the disease, treatment type, and individual personality traits. Dr. Vinoth Kumar believes that recognizing and addressing these mental health concerns is crucial for the overall recovery of the patient.
Here are some of the key psychological effects of long-term jaundice treatment:
1. Anxiety and Stress
Long-term treatment for jaundice often involves continuous monitoring, medication, and lifestyle changes. This can lead to heightened anxiety and stress. Patients may worry about their health, the effectiveness of treatment, and their future. For those with chronic conditions, the fear of relapse or complications can create significant emotional strain.
2. Depression
The physical symptoms of jaundice, such as fatigue, weakness, and discomfort, can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and sadness. Over time, this can develop into depression, especially if the patient feels isolated or misunderstood by those around them. The extended nature of jaundice treatment can wear down mental resilience, leading to emotional exhaustion.
3. Social Withdrawal
Patients undergoing long-term jaundice treatment may experience a loss of interest in social activities. The constant medical appointments, combined with the physical limitations imposed by the condition, can cause individuals to withdraw from social interactions. This isolation can further worsen feelings of loneliness, which may impact mental well-being.
4. Body Image Issues
Jaundice can cause noticeable physical changes, such as yellowing of the skin and eyes. These changes may lead to body image concerns, especially for those who are conscious about their appearance. The prolonged nature of the condition can make it difficult for patients to accept their appearance, potentially leading to self-esteem issues.
5. Frustration with Treatment
The process of treating jaundice can be lengthy and complex. Patients often experience frustration, especially if progress is slow or the symptoms don't improve as expected. This frustration can be amplified by side effects from medications or the emotional toll of constant medical attention.
6. Cognitive and Memory Issues
Certain treatments, particularly those involving heavy medication, can affect cognitive function. Patients may experience memory problems, difficulty concentrating, or mental fog. These cognitive challenges can add to the psychological burden of dealing with the disease and treatment.
How to Cope with the Psychological Effects of Jaundice Treatment
It’s essential for individuals undergoing long-term jaundice treatment to seek not only medical care but also emotional support. Dr. Vinoth Kumar suggests several strategies to help manage the psychological challenges of long-term jaundice treatment:
1. Counseling and Therapy
Seeking professional counseling or therapy can help patients cope with the emotional and psychological challenges of jaundice treatment. Therapists can guide patients through techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to manage anxiety, depression, and stress.
2. Support Groups
Joining a support group with others undergoing similar experiences can be incredibly beneficial. Support groups provide an opportunity for patients to share their feelings, offer advice, and build a sense of community. Knowing that you're not alone in your struggle can be a powerful motivator for recovery.
3. Regular Exercise
Maintaining a regular exercise routine, within the limits of the individual’s physical condition, can improve both physical and mental health. Exercise has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost energy levels, which can help manage the psychological effects of jaundice treatment.
4. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques
Practices such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness can help reduce stress and improve emotional well-being. These techniques encourage individuals to stay grounded in the present moment, helping them manage feelings of anxiety and frustration.
5. Family and Social Support
Strong emotional support from family and friends plays a crucial role in maintaining a positive mindset during long-term treatment. Loved ones can provide encouragement, understanding, and companionship, helping to alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation.
6. Focus on Small Victories
While long-term jaundice treatment can feel overwhelming, focusing on small victories along the way can help maintain a sense of progress and accomplishment. Celebrating even minor improvements in health can boost morale and provide a sense of hope.
Why Mental Health Matters in Jaundice Treatment
Dr. Vinoth Kumar stresses that treating the psychological well-being of patients is just as important as treating the physical symptoms of jaundice. A patient who feels emotionally supported and mentally well is more likely to adhere to treatment plans, follow medical advice, and maintain a positive outlook, all of which contribute to better overall health outcomes.
It’s essential for patients undergoing jaundice treatment to communicate openly with their healthcare providers about their mental health. At GEM Hospital, we understand that addressing the emotional aspects of treatment is key to achieving the best possible results.

The Best Treatment Plan for Alcohol Addiction in Dehrdaun
Tumblr media
Alcohol is a chemical component present in alcoholic drinks, including spirits, wine, and beer. It is produced when yeast ferments or breaks down the sugars in a variety of foods, such as grapes, apples, and cereals. Alcohol functions as a stimulant substance in low dosages, enhancing sociability and feelings of euphoria.
It operates as a central nervous system depressant in higher dosages, affecting coordination, slowing reflexes and breathing, distorting vision, altering judgement, and inducing memory lapses or blackouts. Having an alcoholic beverage every now and then is unlikely to lead to addiction or have serious bodily consequences, but many individuals participate in dangerous drinking habits such as binge drinking and persistent heavy drinking.
Too much alcohol may be harmful to one’s health and lead to addiction. Almost all organs in the human body are affected by alcohol. It has a wide range of short- and long-term impacts, and chronic alcohol consumption can lead to serious, even life-threatening, medical disorders.
Long-Term Rehab for Alcohol Addiction
Long-term rehabilitation treatment of 90 days or more is connected with better recovery results. A 90-day inpatient rehab programme for those addicted to alcohol will give them enough time to adjust to a new sober lifestyle, learn and practice the essential coping approaches they will need to continue their sobriety after rehab, and provide opportunities to build a strong recovery support network.
Clients in inpatient alcohol rehab participate in a rehabilitation programme that combines behavioural therapy, 12-step programme interventions, chemical dependency education, and other evidence-based treatments to identify and correct negative behaviours, address other related problems and trauma that have contributed to substance abuse, and apply skills to stop current substance abuse and prevent future substance abuse.
Clients in inpatient rehab live in an enjoyable addiction treatment facility for a stretched length of time, working with addiction counsellors, therapists, recovery experts, and their peers in recovery to conquer their alcohol addiction.
This time of rehabilitation also allows individuals to recover physically, as the body needs time to recover from the trauma and neglect it endured while in the grip of addiction. To promote physical recovery, nutritious meals are supplied daily, and clients are forced to participate in a daily physical activity routine.
Alcohol Addiction Treatment plan
Detox and withdrawal:
Treatment may begin with a detoxification programme — a medically controlled withdrawal that typically lasts 2–7 days. To avoid withdrawal symptoms, you may need to take sedatives. Detox is generally performed at a hospital or an inpatient treatment rehab.
Learning skills and establishing a treatment plan:
This is normally done with the help of addiction treatment professionals. Goal planning, behaviour modification approaches, the use of self-help manuals, counselling, and follow-up care at a addiction treatment facility may all be part of it.
Psychological counselling:
Counselling and therapy for groups and individuals can help you understand your alcohol issue and recover from the psychological effects of alcohol usage. Couples or family therapy may be beneficial to you, and family support may be a crucial element of the rehabilitation process.
Continuing support:
Aftercare programmes and support groups assist persons recovering from alcohol addiction in quitting drinking, managing relapses, and adjusting to essential lifestyle adjustments. This may include medical or psychiatric treatment, as well as participation in a support group.
Treatment for psychological problems:
Alcohol addiction commonly coexists with other mental health problems. If you have depression, anxiety, or another mental health issue, you may need talk therapy (psychotherapy), medicines, or other types of treatment.

Why Do We Cling to the Past?
Tumblr media
Time- this is a mystery even Einstein didn’t understand, in addition to god. Einstein was a god fearing man. He didn’t use the presence of science to negate the presence of god. Time is something really elusive. we are in it side by side we are creating it; it also, at the same time, lives in us. Scenes of particular times are like episodes of memory in our head. Time seems to move faster when we are enjoying it. It slows down like a tortoise when we are in pain. When we eat burgers it flies; when we exercise it slows down. Sometimes we want to beat it like in a race. Sometimes we want it to go on forever.
Clinging to our past may keep us from moving forward, particularly for individuals who have addiction or mental health issues. The top Best Rehab center in India can help you let go of past experiences and enjoy an improved future. These centers provide qualified therapy and customized treatment plans, helping clients in resolving their challenges and beginning on something fresh in their lives.
But what does time have to do with addiction and mental illness?
Everything!
Let’s suppose we have 100% of what we are doing right now. 40% of it is going about thinking about the past. 40% is about the future. 12% is about others and 8% about ourselves in the present.
This is the problem. We are not present at the moment. We keep on thinking about so much other stuff that we don’t work on ourselves. There just seems to be no time for it. We spend all the time we have, or think we have. Thinking of the past causes depression;of the future causes anxiety. we are not helping ourselves.
The answer is to live in the present moment. If we are in the here and now, time is nothing separate from the experience of living. If we can spend 100% in the present, the neural connections will strengthen and little misshapen will not cause the present to shatter. One’s mood will remain stable and they will not have to turn to any substance. One also has to learn to manage mood and time together as they are interlinked.
When a fun activity comes to an end, our bodies and mind want to cling to that time, that past. Thus we try to do 1 more fun thing. We just want fun fun fun. However, that is not healthy. We always need to come out of our comfort zones and attempt an activity that doesn’t have the element of fun. And it’s all about time. Time is a very important element to manage in recovery.
We have to understand when, at what moment the process of relapse starts, how long should each follow up be, how long does the patient have to be in rehab, at what time can he go to bed, at what time to eat. Everything is around time. There is much to be done and just enough time for it to be done and not a second more. Once we understand and accept that, we can begin recovery.
At The Hermitage Rehab, the patients are cured and monitored regularly not to give them space for relapse in the process of recovery. It leads to proper coordination of family and doctors with the patient. Finding ways to get over addiction is the major perspective of a de addiction patient. He wants to find reasons to get the addiction once again and then he agai starts the dose. But the team at the best rehab center in Punjab is well specialized to treat the patients from Addiction.
data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==
People are generally fond of parties and fun activities but sometimes they get indulged into various addictive habits which later on harm themselves. According to JPS Bhatia, people accidentally choose the way of addiction or substance abuse but further on they find pleasure in it and never wish to quit it. But in this case, they take on debt and get into theft habits which ruin their personal lives. Even family members don’t trust those people who are in addiction.
Clinging to the past could represent an option to maintain comfortable even when it is no more effective. For humans prepared to move in advance, a luxury rehab in India provides a great environment for beginning new. These facilities combined qualified therapy with beautiful environments, creating an atmosphere of peace in which people can focus on their wellness. They play a role people resolve their previous challenges and go forward into a healthier, more fulfilling life by offering specific treatment plans and complete therapies.

Supporting a Loved One Struggling with Alcohol Addiction: A Compassionate Guide
Watching a loved one struggle with alcohol addiction can be incredibly challenging. It’s a journey that requires patience, understanding, and support. As someone who cares deeply about them, your role can be pivotal in their recovery process. Here are some compassionate and practical ways to support a loved one battling alcohol addiction.
1. Educate Yourself About Addiction
Understanding the nature of addiction is the first step. Alcoholism is a complex disease that affects the brain and behavior. By learning about the psychological, physical, and social aspects of addiction, you can better empathize with what your loved one is experiencing. Resources like books, reputable websites, and support groups can provide valuable insights.
2. Communicate Openly and Honestly
Approach your loved one with empathy and concern rather than judgment. Choose a calm, private setting to discuss your observations and feelings. Use “I” statements to express how their drinking affects you and your relationship. For example, “I feel worried when you drink heavily because I care about your health and safety.”
3. Encourage Professional Help
Encourage your loved one to seek professional help. This could be in the form of a therapist, counselor, or a dedicated addiction treatment program. Offer to help them research options and accompany them to appointments if they feel comfortable. Highlight the benefits of professional support in managing addiction.
4. Attend Support Groups Together
Support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) provide a community of people who understand what your loved one is going through. You might also consider joining groups like Al-Anon, which are designed for friends and family of people struggling with addiction. These groups can offer valuable emotional support and practical advice.
5. Set Boundaries
While it’s important to be supportive, it’s equally important to set healthy boundaries. Make it clear that certain behaviors, such as drinking around children or driving under the influence, are unacceptable. Boundaries are not about punishment but about protecting your well-being and encouraging responsible behavior.
6. Avoid Enabling Behaviors
Enabling behaviors, such as covering up for your loved one’s actions or providing financial support that facilitates their drinking, can inadvertently prolong their addiction. Encourage responsibility and accountability. Sometimes, allowing them to face the natural consequences of their actions can be a powerful motivator for change.
7. Be Patient and Non-Judgmental
Recovery from addiction is often a long and nonlinear process. There may be relapses and setbacks along the way. It’s crucial to remain patient and avoid judgment. Celebrate small victories and encourage your loved one to continue striving toward sobriety, even when progress seems slow.
8. Take Care of Yourself
Supporting someone with an addiction can be emotionally draining. Ensure you take time for self-care and seek support for yourself. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, and don’t hesitate to seek professional counseling if you need it. Your well-being is essential, not only for your sake but also for providing effective support to your loved one.
9. Create a Supportive Environment
Make your home and social settings supportive of recovery. This might mean removing alcohol from your home and planning activities that don’t involve drinking. Encourage healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise, nutritious eating, and mindfulness practices, which can all contribute to a more balanced and sober life.
10. Offer Continuous Support
Even after your loved one seeks treatment and begins the recovery process, your support remains crucial. Continue to encourage them, celebrate their progress, and be there during challenging times. Recovery is an ongoing journey, and having a steadfast support system can make a significant difference.
Join SK Vision For a Better Future
Conclusion
Supporting a loved one struggling with alcohol addiction is a delicate balance of empathy, encouragement, and self-care. By educating yourself, communicating openly, encouraging professional help, and maintaining healthy boundaries, you can play a vital role in their recovery journey. Remember, while you can provide support and love, the decision to recover ultimately lies with them. Your unwavering support and understanding can provide the strength they need to take the first steps toward a healthier, sober life.

may i ask you to elaborate on tua season 2?
hell yeah dude
for an easy answer @deer-time's tua salt tag is a really good starting place (though they've moved most tua-related stuff to their sideblog @salty-coffee)
but if you don't want to go through that basically, in no particular order:
it felt they were just shoving in scenes for the music and the soundtrack just wasn't as memorable as season one
the time skip ensured that we missed out on most of their development. i have a lot of beef with the time skip
i cannot stress enough how much the handler should've died in season one lol
WHY WOULD NONE OF THEM KNOW WHERE KLAUS WAS HE WAS LITERALLY A CULT LEADER
luther, at the very least, should've seen vanya's ads in the newspaper. diego allison and klaus i can understand because one was in an asylum (i have my beef with that don't worry lol), the other wouldn't read white newspapers, and the third was traveling
vanya's amnesia plot felt like it was just there to smooth her over? she got no meaningful interactions with the siblings because she didn't know them and the conflict they set up at the end of season one ('we need to fix her') never went anywhere. we love wlw representation but was vanya really ready for romance after all the shit that went down? she needs time to process and grow not forget everything and latch onto the first woman that takes her in. we got no exploration of her trauma. also why can she just automatically control her powers now? no trauma recovery narrative for vanya i guess. she spends the entire season as essentially a side character with no real agency in the plot? also where did the new powers come from hello
speaking of the romance literally none of it was executed well. why did raymond assume his WIFE was a government plant before at least hearing her out? vissy was written so shallowly it's not even funny. liego happened way too quickly and diego forgot about eudora too fast. klave was okay i guess lol idc abt them
why did diego and lila face no racism? why were they in an integrated asylum in the south? why did they actually show diego being helped genuinely instead of them just making his situation worse? i don't think therapy was that genuinely developed. diego felt like a completely different character
why would luther, known goody-two-shoes, work for the mob? also why would he not ask jack ruby to look up his siblings' names for him before? he went back to the alley so he at least had the thought that they landed in the same spot at different times right. also he was way too dumbed down and made into comic relief for the benefit of the luther haters
klaus was literally made irrelevant? he had nothing to do, his relapse was treated as a JOKE, his addiction wasn't explored, and he was basically just comic relief like luther
allison's plotline felt it was just there to get her out of the way, she totally forgot about claire, her trauma was ignored for the second season in a row, etc. she wasn't even mad at vanya like this woman slit your throat and incinerated your daughter i don't CARE that you treated her badly i think that's a pretty good basis for some friction? (screw the amnesia plot obviously)
five and ben were left pretty intact specifically because ben's personality isn't there and five didn't get a time skip
why did they forget that drugs suppress powers when vanya was with the fbi
very sexy of tua to introduce the concept of an evil corporation that's essentially the root of all their problems in season one and then redeem it but just giving it new management? and have five of all people look into the faces of herb and DOT, WHO LEFT HIM IN THE APOCALYPSE AND DIDN'T PUSH FOR HIM TO GET EXTRACTED, and say 'yeah guys totally! :)'
also he should've eaten carmichael i don't make the rules
NONE OF THE SIBLING BONDING FELT REAL BECAUSE WE DIDN'T GET TO SEE THEIR DEVELOPMENT. NOTHING VANYA DID FELT REAL BECAUSE OF THE AMNESIA
the swedes were legitimately not necessary. screw the swedes all my homies hate the swedes. why did they stay all the way until the finale
where did the five+allison jfk plot go that was so good
why did lila automatically know how to control their powers
elliott wasn't necessary either they should've just made their home base hazel and agnes's house with no unnecessary fridging please. that's where they could've gotten a briefcase too
the atmosphere felt completely different? season one was dark and slow and had the vibes of a gothic horror, almost? it was watching a train wreck in action, seeing all these plot threads inevitably combine for one hell of a finale. there was nothing like that in season two. aside from the obvious atmosphere change, it didn't feel like there was any direction to where the story was going? the only two highlights of the finale i care about are diego deflecting the bullets and five rewinding time. that's IT. and compared to season one's finale, it's utterly disappointing
idk it just felt like a popcorn flick/marvel movie and those are fine! those have their place! but the entire draw of tua was the darker themes and focus on childhood trauma/abuse, and they just completely failed to follow up. those have their place, and it was not here
all in all the writing just felt weaker
there's more in the 'tua salt' and 'tua s2 salt' tags
anyway tua is a ten-episode-long miniseries

Tumble’s soulmate heartbreak concept!
So this has been sitting in my files for months now. All I remember from why I came up with this is that it was for a Jedtavius soulmate AU - that never ended up happening.
I don’t know what to do with it, or if I’ll ever even use it – so, I’m sharing it! Feel free to use this lil creation of mine – or ask questions about it, if something isn’t clear :)
Constructive criticism is also welcome, as this is the first “sickness” I’ve made up for creative purposes
Soulmate heartbreak
Heartbreak: a condition that is caused by being rejected by one's soulmate. The severity varies, depending on the type of rejection. The worse the rejection/breakup, the worse the heartbreak.
Heartbreak is usually dangerous and can be fatal, but milder cases occur when the breakup/rejection is smooth and both parties are in understanding.
Symptoms:
Heartbreak starts with a quick decline of mental health, depression is usually present and noticeable after a week or so – though it can take up to a month.
The victim will shut down, refusing to take care of themselves and essentially become bedridden. Chest pains are present from the very start and will gradually grow worse as the heartbreak worsens. After this, they will start having on and off fever, that will gradually become worse, rise higher and last longer. The victim will often refuse to eat and drink, has night terrors and as it worsens, starts having feverish dreams about their soulmate. They will often feel too hot and cold at the same time, struggle to stay still as the chest pains grow worse and in the most extreme cases struggle with breathing. Without treatment, these symptoms will most likely last a lifetime or only worsen.
In worse cases, the victim might lose touch with reality and struggle recognizing people around them, even close friends and family.
Death through heartbreak:
The most severe cases of heartbreak will end with the victim dying. Their fever will rise and their night terrors and touch on reality will worsen suddenly, often just overnight. In most cases they will have hallucinations of their soulmate and mumble about them - if they still have enough strength to do so. Their chest pains will be severe and often just moving them will cause agony.
At this point, it's often too late to save them. They will pass away, most likely in pain and delirious.
Sometimes victims also die of starvation or dehydration after failing to take care of themselves.
Possibilities on recovery:
Healing heartbreak is possible, but doesn't happen often – mostly due to the victim refusing to get help, as they feel like it won’t end the grief. The victim can mend their heart on their own, through a lot of therapy and the process often includes removing their soulmate mark (which in turn would remove any feelings of love and attraction they have towards their soulmate). Most refuse this, as they cling on to the hope that their soulmate will love them back eventually.
Their soulmate can also help them mend their condition, if they change their mind on the rejection. This process is slow and requires a lot of effort and dedication. Both parties have to be willing to give each other a chance, recreating the connection between soulmates. They would have to spend time together and be open about their feelings towards each other. The love and bond between them will slowly mend heartbreak - the process often takes up to six months.
In cases where the soulmate of the victim still doesn’t return their feelings, it is best for them to stay apart and end any contact – as their presence might risk a relapse for the recovered victim.
Affects on the soulmate:
Heartbreak can be two sided. Sometimes, the person who rejected the other can feel chest pains and their overall mood will decline noticeably, making them more aggressive and frustrated. They might have occasional nightmares and be more paranoid. This ends once the heartbreak is healed or the other member passes.
Note - it is extremely rare for the heartbreak to be nearly as bad for the one who ended the relationship/rejected their soulmate, but it is possible: if they were to regret their actions but not try to reach out to their soulmate, there is a chance that they will slowly begin to go through the same symptoms. This will be a far slower process for them as they are not the one who got rejected.

Hey dear! Hope you are doing well 🥺 wondered if I could ask for a comfort letter with Sabo and female reader that is dealing with depression and self harm? Thanks in advance, it would make me the happiest alive 🌸💕
anony, my love, i'm so sorry you've been going through that! know that if you ever need to talk, you can message me! dealing with SH is hard, but every day without is already an amazing step. You're strong and I believe in you! ❤ The News Coo just left with your letter. It'll be there in a minute!
To my princess (Y/N), It hurts me deeply to know that you’ve been feeling like this. You mean so much to me, and I want to protect you from everyone and everything, but how can I protect you from that? It worries me, especially now that we’re far from each other. I need to know that you’re safe and healthy all the time.I want you to be happy, I want you to be safe. You’re the love of my life, my princess, my precious angel and my sunshine.
Please, I need you to tell me what’s happening to you, why are you feeling like this, and what triggered you. Did someone say something to you? Is it school? Or maybe things that you’ve been dealing with for so long? If you don’t want to tell me when I call or if you don’t want to tell me face to face, you can write it.
I also know that recovery is hard. It’s a slow process and it doesn’t happen overnight. Relapse doesn’t mean you failed. So every day without self harm is a victory. Doesn’t matter if it’s one day, two days, I’m proud of you for fighting against the urge to do it. I’m proud of you for being alive, I’m proud of you for being you.
When I’m back from my mission, know that I’m not leaving your side so easily. I’ll hold you so tight that nothing will be able to hurt you, not even the bad thoughts, not even yourself. I’ll kiss you, I’ll kiss your scars and I’ll be watching you to be sure you won’t hurt yourself. I know that I may not be too much help, but I’ll do my best.
I love you too much, and I promise if there’s anything I can do, I ask you to please, tell me. And whenever you feel the urge to self harm, you can call me anytime. I’m never too busy or too tired for you. I love you always,
Sabo.

Favorite Fics: Drarry Edition
Like I mentioned last time, reading has been a big comfort to me with all this craziness and sheltering at home, so I want to pay it forward and send love to some of the writers whose work has been brightening my quarantine. Thanks, guys!
For this list, we’re leaving the MCU for a while and heading over to the Wizarding World. I liked Harry Potter when it came out, but I never really read much fanfic until I realized a couple of years ago how much a redeemed Draco fit into the redemption trope that I loved in Harringrove, LoVe, SnowBaz, and other fandoms and ships. Once I started perusing the fics out there, I realized that one of the strengths of this fandom is the length and quality of the stories. I love stories that are a meal, and Drarry provides so many!
As I’ve gotten into the ship (so many years late, lol), these are my top 10 favorites.
dirtynumbangelboy by @magpiefngrl
This is probably the Drarry fic that I most enjoy. I come back to it fairly often when I need just a good read in the HP world. Fake dating is one of my absolute favorite tropes, which made this one an automatic win for me, but it’s written with such heart. I really, really love Draco in this fic. His uni studies and his flat being so different from the diffident image he projects. This is also probably the best Astoria I’ve ever read. Also--Jam Today! Read it now!
Do It All Over Again by DracoWillHearAboutThis
I only discovered this series earlier this year, and I’ve already read it at least three times from beginning to end. It’s a re-telling of the original series starting from Book 1. Draco sends himself a letter from the future basically saying that his dad is wrong, and he needs to give up his pure blood ideals and befriend Harry, then--boom--the Golden Trio’s adventures all happen with Draco in tow (and eventual romance, of course). The plot is fairly similar to the actual series, but I am there for the angst and the character growth. Narcissa kicks ass in this ‘verse, and Draco/Hermionie as besties is a treat! Book 4 and Book 6 are both amazing. And her titles are hilarious. This is the only series on my list that is still a WIP, but there’s plenty to read. Books 1 - 6 are complete, and a new chapter for 7 comes out every two weeks. It’s a safe bet so far, and it’s so good--why wait?
A Secondary Education by Thunderbird587
In this fic, Draco takes a job as Potions Professor at Hogwarts after getting divorced under horrible circumstances and renews his acquaintance with Harry, who is the DADA Professor. It’s got a bisexual awakening, and manages to combine friends with benefits with some supreme pining. Like a whole pine forest. Thunderbird587′s Draco POV is so fleshed out, and yet it also lets us see how Harry is pining, even when Draco himself doesn’t. Plus, at over 200K, it is long enough to get lost in for ages, which is perfect right about now. And when you finish the main fic, there are three other ancillary fics, two in Harry’s POV that take place during the main one. The cufflinks one is my favorite, but the writing is so good that I even thoroughly enjoyed the third sub-fic that fleshed out an OC. So, so worth the read--all of it!
The Foundations!verse by Saras_Girl
All of the fics by Saras_Girl are great. You can’t go wrong with any of them. But Reparations, Foundations, and all the little one-shots after are my favorite. It honestly surprised me at first, because alcoholism is a trigger for me, but this fic actually helped me realize that it’s the addiction part, the fall to rock bottom that triggers me. Recovery stories are different. And, I guess, this one is a bit different in that, though it has plenty of characters recovering, Draco himself is actually in a healthy place and facilitating recovery without relapsing. Harry is a Healer in this one, which is not the usual, and I quite enjoy his other relationships in this ‘verse, as well. He, Ron, and Hermione’s friendship is great in this one (their pub nights crack me up), but I also really like Harry’s friends at St. Mungo’s. My second favorite Terry Boot ever, and two awesome OC chicks. And the process of Drarry going from can’t stand each other to in love is slow and prickly and yet really believable. Oh, and Harry and Narcissa’s relationship in this one is just fabulous.
Golden Age by zeitgeistic (faire_weather)
The Hufflepuff in me was bound to fall in love with this fic. I really enjoy Eighth Year fics, especially the ones that embrace inter-house unity (shouldn’t have taken them a war to see the need for that!). This one takes it to a new level when everyone in... I think it was 6th - 8th years were resorted at the welcome feast, and the whole 8th year dynamic is shaken up. Harry, Draco and Neville become Hufflepuffs; Hermione and Pansy become Ravenclaws; Ginny becomes a Slytherin; and somehow Ron and Blaise are the ones who stay in their houses because the hat thinks they are basically the uber Gryffindor and Slytherin. But with the rest of them, we get to see them embrace other facets of their personalities, which is super interesting. And then, after the resorting, we find out that Hufflepuffs have a whole different world going on that basically no one outside their house knows about, and that world is brilliant. Even Hufflepuff food in the Great Hall is different! Everyone would enjoy this story, I think, but if you are a ‘Puff, you really, truly should not miss it. And if you like this one, check out some of zeitgeistic’s other works. Her world building is fabulous.
Life skills outside the curriculum by Endrina
In this fic, Harry gets fed up with the Dursleys before his 11th birthday and runs away before he gets his Hogwarts letter. He ends up on the streets and somehow embraces this kind of instinctual magic that is really fascinating. A few years later, Draco runs away rather than get involved more closely with the Dark Lord, and of course they meet up. This whole fic is super compelling. Harry’s world view and the way people gravitate toward him even without chosen one status. Also, this fic has one of my favorite versions of Remus and Sirius ever. I really wish there was a part two that went in depth on everything that happened after the end of this one, but even on its own it is so worth the read. And everything is wrapped up. I’m just greedy and would’ve loved more. :-)
A Convenient Impracticality by @firethesound
This fic combines friends with benefits and fake dating into a really enjoyable story. Harry is so oblivious, but it all works out in the end. And Draco is a secret mastermind, but in a good way. So is Hermione. Unlike some of the other, angstier stories on my list, this one is so fun, and I love it. And if you like it, check out more of firethesound’s work, as well. It’s worth it!
you’ve got the antidote for me by kandakicksass
And then, back on the angst train, lol. Soulmates, red string of fate, rejected bond = terminal disease. Whew! There’s a lot to unpack in this one, but after I read it, I never forgot it. I read a lot of fic in a lot of fandoms, and I always know a story is going to become a favorite if it stands out so much that I remember it later and think about it. That surely happened here.
(We’ll Call This Fixer-Upper) Home by phdmama
This is one of the first fics I read on my first Drarry binge, and I’ve always remembered it. Just like I love Eighth Year and Hogwarts professor fics, I also love fics where they have really unexpected jobs--pretty much anything other than Aurors. In this one, Harry is an artist/photographer and Draco is an up-and-coming rock star. The music and art, the creativity is important in this fic, but it also really looks at Draco’s recovery after the war in ways I haven’t read since, and I’m also a sucker for our favorite characters actually addressing and recovering from their trauma.
Boom Clap (The Sound of My Heart) by @femmequixotic and noeon (noe)
This fic takes the Eighth Year trope to the next level. Draco, Harry, Hermione, and some other faves are teaching fellows at Hogwarts. Junior professors, kind of. It read like if the HP crew went to college. And, of course, Draco and Harry fall in love along the way, but not without much angst and obliviousness. I really enjoy the Draco POV in this. His worries and anxieties feel so real for that stage in his life, but amped up because of the past. This was one I read, never forgot, and then had to go back and find so i could read it again.
So, those are my top 10, but there is lots of other good Drarry out there--both from these authors and all the others in the ship and the fandom. Thanks for all the writing you guys do.
Oh, and tagging @virtual-insomnia, but only because she said she might want to make some quarantine fic lists of her own. :-)
