“You’re wearing that to lunch?” 

You paused, the eyebrow pencil you were using hovering over your face. You looked up at the vanity mirror to see your best friend’s reflection behind you. 

“What? Is it too much?” you asked, confused. You had picked a light sundress with a floral pattern on it to fit the weather outside. It was fairly warm and sunny. You didn’t consider it too dressy for the occasion; it was a casual outfit. 

“I’m gonna look like a troll next to you. Or a goblin. No wonder Kamden has no idea how you’re still friends with me,” Mackiah said, studying you in the mirror, arms crossed. You blushed. Your best friend was usually flirty with you, and you had even kissed once before. However, your relationship still wasn’t defined. You were sure he liked you, and there was no way there was any other girl he was seeing. The unlabelled situation didn’t bother you, though. 

“I can change if you want,” you offered, setting down your makeup.

“No. You look stunning, please don’t change,” Mackiah fumbled over his words, perhaps even more flustered over your appearance than you were over his words. “I’ll just have to figure out how to match this…” 

You laughed, “Come on, Kiah, you look good all the time. We’re just getting lunch.” 

“But you’re wearing a really pretty dress, and you look really good in it, so I should at least brush my hair,” he clarified, making his way to the bathroom to fix his appearance while you were still laughing. You were just finishing your makeup when he came back out, now with styled hair, blue washed jeans, and a graphic tee. 

“How do I look? Matching up to you now?” he asked. 

“You looked fine before,” you muttered, concentrating on applying your lip tint before you looked at his outfit. Your eyes traveled over him, head to toe, before you smiled. “Very handsome. I don’t know what you were worried about.”

“Perhaps that some guy will see how pretty you are while we’re out and steal you from me. I need to fight them off,” he joked, fake sparring. You laughed. 

“No one is gonna steal me from you, come on.” You stood up, walking towards the door where Mackiah was waiting for you. As you passed him, you pressed a kiss to his cheek. “No one else gets free kisses from me for compliments either,” you said gleefully, watching his ears tint pink. 

Maybe you were toeing the line of best friends too much, but when it was Mackiah, you didn’t care. It was only a matter of time before you were his girlfriend.

The door slammed open with the full drama of a low-budget horror film and Romy staggered in like someone who’d just been personally insulted by the weather. Which, to be fair, she had. Her hair was plastered to her forehead in wind-whipped streaks, her hoodie had achieved new levels of damp despair, and one of her shoes squelched with every step like it was trying to cry for help.

“I swear to God, if one more goat looks at me like I owe it child support, I’m walking into the storm and letting Jesus take the wheel,” she declared, dripping onto the kitchen tile like a drowned rat with strong opinions. She held her arms out to the sides like a soggy scarecrow. “I am wet in places I did not know could get wet, Colt. Your cows are passive-aggressive, and a horse just tried to knock me over because I apparently walked too close to her bucket. Which, same, but still.”

She glanced toward him, then narrowed her eyes, the kind of look that said someone was about to be held emotionally accountable. “Also, you said it’d just be a bit of help, not that I’d be reenacting Noah’s Ark without the dignity of a boat or divine purpose. I am soaked, undercaffeinated, and I just found Lennon —your demon chicken— in the haystack like some kind of satanic Easter egg. Put him back in the coop and he pecked me. Twice. Once on purpose, once out of spite. We don’t have time to unpack that.”

She paused, realizing her hoodie was slowly turning darker by the second from the water, and gave a theatrical sigh. “I think I qualify for storm-related emotional damages.”

Then Romy looked at him properly, water dripping off the end of her nose like a dramatic ellipsis. “If you don’t feed me and point me toward a towel, I’m filing a formal complaint with the Department of What the hell, Colt,” she said, but her voice had softened at the edges, the corners of her mouth tugging up into a small, tired smile. “Kidding. Mostly.”

She stepped a little closer, boots squelching with every move, and asked, more gently this time, “Is there any other little ones we need to check on? For real.”

ONE CRITICAL ROLE SCENE PER EPISODE C3E6: Growing Bonds and Teasing Threads

Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Alternate

Because I had two versions in my brain and they both needed let out...

Julie and the Phantoms are at a meet and greet, engaging with fans. They arrange themselves for another group photo, as previously planned, with Julie sandwiched between Reggie and Luke, the latter’s arm around her waist, and Alex behind them. They’re engaged in quiet conversation while they wait, and from the fan’s perspective, Julie and Luke must look particularly intimate because suddenly a cheer starts making its way through the crowd. 

“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”

Julie pulls her attention back to the people in front of them and rolls her eyes as Luke’s hand tightens on her waist. She feels Reggie pull away slightly from her other side, as if to give the two of them room in encouragement and Alex has already lifted his hands in resignation and removed himself from the whole situation. A lot happens in a very, very short moment of time and she finds herself taking a page out of Luke’s book, pulling Reggie into the space between them as she extracts herself from his grasp. Both boys (and everyone else) are stunned for a moment but Luke recovers almost imperceptibly quickly and shrugs before wrapping his hand around the back of Reggie’s neck and pulling him in for a kiss. 

Alex and Julie gape at them while a collective gasp rises from the crowd.

When they pull apart, Reggie adjusts his hair as he reorients himself in his spot a Julie’s width away from Luke and Luke directs a wink her way. She shakes her head in amusement and a grin before taking her own place between them. 

Luke nods toward Alex, summoning him back too.

“Flynn’s gonna be pissed,” Alex tells him as he returns to his position behind them though he can’t keep the amusement out of his voice.

“Worth it,” Luke grins at him

The band recovers as if nothing had even happened. It takes the fans a bit longer but the stunned silence turns into excited clamouring and the event is back underway before too long.

Like, holy shit. That was wild. As a non-American, I have seen photos but I didn't know it was THAT BIG. HOLY SHIT. And they sold out! They played there and we're gonna see it in HD!

July Happenings at Island Books!

Wow, do we have some big things coming in July (including our annual favorite, Where's Waldo)! Before everyone starts looking for Waldo around town, though, we have just a few more June events to remind you of.

Friday, June 27 -

Today is the last day to vote for Island Books as your favorite PNW bookstore! The Seattle Times hosts an annual Best in the Pacific Northwest award. You can find Island Books under "Shopping" and then "Bookstores".

Saturday, June 28 -

Kalehua Kim, Mele. 6:30-7:30 PM. A longtime customer and friend, we are thrilled to host Kalehua's launch event for Mele, her debut collection of poetry! Kalehua and friends will read from the collection, followed by a signing.

Sunday, June 29 -

Gina Tarnacki, 100 Things to Do in Washington State Before You Die. 1-3 PM. Local Author Gina Tarnacki will join us to sign copies of her new book, 100 Things to Do in Washington State Before You Die.

Monday, June 30 -

The last day to be entered into our Baby-Sitters Club Giveaway. Calling all Claudias, Staceys, Mary Annes, and the rest of the BSC crew! We are celebrating the series with a pre-order promotion, character swag, and a beach towel and character pin giveaway. Anyone who buys a BSC book—which includes Little Sister graphics—gets a raffle ticket. Anyone who pre-orders Jessi Ramsey, Pet-sitter, which releases in October, gets TWO raffle tickets! Woot!

The first day of our new Kids' Summer Reading Camp! 10 - 11 AM. Calling all kids ages 5-12! This summer Island Books is hosting a Summer Reading Camp! Stop into our Children’s department to listen to our booksellers read excerpts from fabulous chapter books (10-10:30) and middle grade novels (10:30-11), get your summer camp passport stamped, and earn a paperback book of your choice from our bookshelves. Attend 5 of the 9 sessions and turn your summer reading camp passport in for a paperback children’s book of your choice! (Sessions run every Monday from June 30 to August 25).

We will be closed for the holiday! As is our tradition, you can expect a box of free books to be placed in front of the store as a thank you for all of your support. Come pick out your next summer read!

Virtual Knitting Book Club. 6-7 PM. This month we're reading The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. All levels of knitters (and crocheters, and any other type of yarn-handicraft doers) are welcome! All discussions are held on Zoom.

Where's Waldo Party. 3 PM. Waldo has been found! Join us for a dessert party to celebrate everyone who found Waldo across the island. Make sure you turn in your completed passport to be entered into drawings for prizes from local businesses.

Saturdays -

Story Time with Nancy Stewart. 9:30-10 AM. Nancy Stewart brings her guitar, her favorite picture books, and her fabulous self to sing catchy songs and get kids interested in reading. Great activity for toddlers, and you’ll find yourself singing along, too!

Sundays - 

The Mercer Island Farmers Market is back for the summer! 10 AM - 2 PM. Wander on down to Mercerdale Park for some weekly shopping, sunshine, and live music, and then stop by the bookstore for your next read on your way home.

Mondays - 

Our new Kids' Summer Reading Camp!! 10 - 11 AM. Sessions run every Monday from June 30 to August 25. See above for details.

All Month Long - 

Where's Waldo returns! Look for little Waldos hiding at Island Books and across Mercer Island at participating businesses. It's a great summer activity with active kiddos, and it encourages everyone to get out and support local! We're prepping the passports as we speak, and will have them available on July 1!

All Summer Long -

Seattle Arts & Lectures Summer Book Bingo! Print off your bingo card of choice (kids, teens, or adults), pick up a book (or several), and try to get bingo or blackout by Tuesday, September 2! BINGO: Complete a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line! Turn in your card and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a commemorative tote bag (for adults) or a gift card (for kids and teens). BLACKOUT: Complete all 25 squares! Turn in your card and you’ll be entered in a drawing for one of three grand prizes—including a 4-Part Create Your Own Series to SAL’s 2025/26 programming. Stop by the store if you need help choosing a book for any of the squares. We'll have displays of suggested books up throughout the summer, along with colored bingo cards (while supplies last)!

No Island Kids Book Club in July. We're taking the month off. Enjoy your summer break, and we'll see you again in August!
