wait aaron tveit is your sworn enemy??? please elaborate

I am so glad you asked!!! So in 2012 the Les Mis movie musical came out and I saw it in the cinemas. But I actually was not a fan it was way too long and ugh anyway I eventually gave it another chance. Turns out this was both a blessing and a mistake. I became obsessed with this fucking musical and one character in particular. Three guesses who. If you guessed Enjolras you would be (unfortunately) correct. So naturally I looked into the actor who played Enjolras. Another mistake. Aaron Kyle Tveit in Les Mis was my gateway drug into musical theatre. I'm autistic so I get special interests and just focus on one thing or genre with my whole ass mind body and soul. So I have been absolutely obsessed with musicals ever since. Now Les Mis isn't even my fave musical but it's like the main one I hyperfocus on and the brick as well so I've read that 2 times bc it's a beast lol. Anyway long story kind of short Aaron Tviet is my sworn enemy because he had the audacity to star in the 2012 movie musical Les Miserables and CRUSH the role of Enjolras and therefore dragged my ass into musical hell. More Random Les Mis Thoughts

• Jac Yarrow & James D. Gish chemistry - These two are the best Marius/Enjolras pairing we've had in YEARS. They look, sound and act their parts perfectly. Their interactions feel so natural and dynamic. Highlight is during DWM, when Enj comforts Marius in the beginning; only for them to briefly fight each other in the next moment, when trying to stop Grantaire 💁‍♀️💁‍♀️ Les Mis Arena Tour understands Enjoltaire(ius).

(Aaron Tveit and Eddie Redmayne was also a superb combination. Kyle Scatliffe and Andy Mientus too)

• Shan Ako is a terrific Eponine, her stage presence is captivating and her voice full of emotion. I did think her Eponine was more interesting though in the full production, compared to the concert?? Anyway, Natty Ong is also a very dynamic Eponine!!

• Speaking of Eponine, put back Eponine's Errand. Like, yesterday? It further establishes the dynamic between Eponine and Marius, but more importantly it has the line: "Good god, oh what a rumpus" which is very fun to say. Video proof here of its importance. I'll have no discussion in the comments 😌

• Future definitive Valjean? Continuing the last post, what candidates do we have? I know our young Broadway legends such as Aaron Tveit and Jeremy Jordan wanna play Valjean. 45th anniversary coming? Can they do it? Audra McDonald is another choice that makes sense, don't question me or her.

I liked @deadgayturtles suggestion of James D. Gish being a future definitive Valjean.

• Gavroche's death - Illegal that it's not in the arena show? There are so many stops left, just put it in there and we'll pretend it was always there??? 👀👀

• My biggest 🚩 red flag 🚩 is that Bradley's Javert made me go: I can fix HIM.

• When I was a Les Mis baby and saw the show for the first time, Jonny Purchase played Marius (understudy) and he was perfection. A crime that he was only an understudy, also a crime there are no good bootlegs. Jonny is les mis ensemble royalty.

• Favorite new line in Mon Histoire (On My Own) is "Marius enfin m'enlace". Pardon my french, but kind of: Marius finally holds me. Maybe it's obvious, but I love how it reconnects with A Little Fall of Rain "just hold me now..." 🥹🥹 Need to get my ass to France and see the french production sighhhhh.

• Everyone in the show just wants a hug or needs a hug honestly? Wants a hug: Marius, Grantaire, Cosette, and Eponine. Needs a hug: Fantine, Valjean, Javert, Enjolras and Gavroche. I'm correct? 😊😊😊

Okay I did genuinely forget about the barricade outfit but it did come back! It’s different from the Staged Concert, more greenish-black and I think he has his hair down- there’s at least some strands loose on the front

Alfie Boe Bring Him Home is still my favoritest thing in the entire world. I owe him my life im so serious he was my top artist for a reason

Enjolras did the Aaron Tveit “until the earth is free” opt up it was amazing

They cut Gavroche’s individual death scene which was either for better or for worse because that’s the one that always gets me crying, so I just teared up at the end

When Javert let valjean and Marius go from the sewers he turned around as if he was gonna follow them, paused, screamed, and put his head and his hand

Hello esteemed mutual. If you are reading this, then that means my propaganda is working. But you might still have questions, so I am here to answer them.

What is Next to Normal?

Next to Normal is a rock musical from Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt. It that follows a typical "perfect loving family, so adoring" in the suburbs, namely the Goodman family. It's as nuclear family as you can get: father, mother, son, daughter. But the mother, Diana, struggles with bipolar disorder and makes some drastic choices in her treatment that impacts the family. The father, Dan, tries to act as if nothing is wrong, and the children's relationship with each other has always been complex because of the family drama. The daughter, Natalie, especially has a hard time coping with it and finds distraction when she meets Henry at school.

After a huge relapse, Diana is advised to seek treatment from Dr. Madden, but he too advises a severe procedure. Diana needs to think on whether she wants this or not, while keeping her family in mind.

What productions do you like?

Next to Normal premiered on Broadway in 2009, and that is the production I love and know the best. It stars Alice Ripley as the mother, J. Robert Spencer as the father, Aaron Tveit as the son, Jennifer Damiano as the daughter, Adam Chanler-Baret as Henry and Louis Hobson as Dr. Fine/Dr. Madden. I have also seen *cough* slime tutorials with Kyle Dean Massey as the son and Brian d'Arcy James as the father. It had an off-Broadway run prior to that, which I have also seen things of. Off-Broadway has actually one of my favourite songs, but alas, that got cut and it hasn't been brought back for any other production (or at least, not that I know of).

I was also looking very respectfully at the production at the Kennedy Center from 2020, which stars Rachel Bay Jones as the mother (wow!), Victor Dixon as the father (damn!), Khamary Rose as the son (I do not know him!), Maia Reficco as the daughter (holy shit!), Ben Levi Ross as Henry (great!) and Michael Park as Dr. Madden/Dr. Fine (yay!). What a cast! Unfortunately, as usual, theatre is incredibly unaccessible, so apart from promotional material I haven't seen anything of it.

Next to Normal got a resurgence in 2023 when it went to London. It was a huge hit off-West End, so of course it transferred to the West End in 2024. Fun fact, it was between runs when I visited London. I am still bitter about it. I've heard really, REALLY great things about this production and many call it a complete re-imagining of the work while also remaining faithful. That's a tough line to walk and they did it. People specifically like how they re-characterised the son, without changing a word, and how that also changes the complex dynamic between the children. It stars Caissie Levy as the mother (wow!), Jamie Parker as the father, Jack Wolfe as the son (who's frequently named the best in this role, sorry Aaron), Eleanor Worthington Cox as the daughter, Jack Ofrecio as Henry and Trevor Dion Nicholas as Dr. Fine/Dr. Madden. Gosh I am so bitter I didn't get to see this live! AAAAAAAH!

Is there a trailer?

Do the songs slap?

Yes, they DO! The OBC got a remaster or something last year to celebrate its 15th anniversary. As I mentioned, it's more of a rock sound, although there are some nice slower songs in it too. And also, I'm Alive is absolutely phenomenal. I'm sorry, but there's no West End cast recording.

Is there a proshot?

Of course not!

Unless...

The West End run has been professionally filmed, so a proshot is a possibility for the future. But there's no word on that yet, and who knows? Proshots, man. Everyone wants them, but they're hell to make and even more hell-ish to release, apparently.

But for now, it's tootin and bootin time. There's actually a really great video, made by a fan, that splices multiple bootlegs of the Broadway run into one video. So there are multiple camera angles and what not. It's really well-done.

Are there content warnings?

Buckle up, dudes (gender neutral)! This show is... A Lot. The central theme of this show is mental health, so you know it's gonna be a serious one. I highly advise anyone to go in without any spoilers, so don't look anything up or read YouTube comments or GOD forbid scroll through the Tumblr tag.

But just to be safe... Let's delve into this. Again, mental illness. Diana deals with a severe form of depression at one point, feeling nothing and feeling like she's not real. Grief also plays a big role during this entire show. This family is also extremely dysfunctional, so expect a lot of that dysfunction. There's also warnings for drug abuse, suicidal idealisation and a suicide attempt. The show also delves a bit into the ethics of psychiatry. Where does medical power overtake patients' rights?
