#aether dimension

Ever since I was itty bitty I’ve had an extreme love for the Aether mod in Minecraft. It was such a pretty place and shaped a lot of things about me and my aesthetics (You see my banner? My own dimension is styled after the Aether!)

I’ve posted about another character in this story once, but I’ve been working for the past three years on this story that has my own version of the Aether dimension and it’s based around aethermen, the Aether variant of endermen.

These characters I show you now are historical figures in aetherman history! I’ve been procrastinating on drawing them for a long time, but I finally did it and I may as well show it here! I’d love to post more about this story in the future, I draw and develop it often and I’d like to one day tell it wether that be through drawings or writing C:

I may as well give some extra information on these lovely heroes!

SoulWhisper SoulWhisper, the yellow and purple fella you see there, is considered the first great hero, blessed by god to protect their kind from Blight. He was blessed with a bow that could defeat a blight-thing instantly and empowered him when he held it. He was known to be a caring and calm individual who would sacrifice himself for the sake of his kind. That promise was eventually fulfilled, and his leader made sure his name would be remembered for eons. WildNova WildNova was a brash and short-tempered aetherman, unusual behavior for a normally calm and quiet species. He ended up being a powerhouse in battles against valkyries and blight-things seemed to never even touch him. This power increased tenfold when he recieved his own holy weapon. The scrolls are vague about how he was extinguished, but most assume he went down in battle, just as the blessed hero before him. ShimmeringDaze ShimmeringDaze was known as a social glitterwing, who loved glitterwings. So much so that she changed her appearance to match one and even her own weapon was styled after one. She was gentle and nurturing, always looking after others before herself and fell in battle fighting for the good of all aethermen with a steely determination and a pearl that shone with all the love in the sky. PrismPop PrismPop was a bright and excitable aetherman who could cheer up anyone's gloomy day. They were kept out of battles when they received their holy weapon, but they didn't seem to mind. They instead focused on helping the city, constructing grand libraries and teaching the young and even helping their leader with his duties (even though they DEFINITELY could not do them well...). Their leader kept him close and protected until tragedy struck during a battle on the outskirts of the city and PrismPop's attempt to help ended with his passing.

Hmm... This scroll isn't very detailed on the lives of these heroes. I guess there's not much room on a scroll to begin with... Maybe there's scrolls specific to them somewhere. We'll find it eventually, I'm sure.

Lou played Amethar as such a loving father until Saccharina showed up, it's downright impressive how shitty he acts towards her, the moment she's in the picture he flips his entire "I'm not a king I'm a warrior" to "Actually now that it's not me I do want to be king"

And that's why Amethar is my only hated PC in Dimension 20. Props to Lou for the way he played him but man I wish that pop rock had died

Continuing on the whole "Alola thinks Mega Evos are bad!" thing... even though there ARE potential dangers associated with Mega Evolution that are touched upon even in the Generation they were introduced in, it was always framed in a way that suggested that any complications with Mega Evos tended to be the result of inexperience or other external factors. Not to mention that some Gen 7 Dex entries absolutely frame certain Mega Evo entries in such a way that it reinforces the cultural bias instead of challenging it. Like they carried out experiments to gather data on Mega Evolutions, but in such a way that the results were guaranteed to favor their already skewed viewpoints that favored the use of Z-Moves instead. Like a "We, the Obviously Biased Group of People, have done an internal investigation on whether or not we are in the wrong about this thing and have concluded that, on totally fair grounds, we are absolutely right and correct about this thing all the time forever." sort of thing.

Oh I really like this take, especially considering that we have a shady scientific organisation in Alola that could have absolutely fed into these "findings" through questionable studies (*cough cough* Aether Foundation *cough cough*)

HE SHOULD HAVE EXPECTED THE MODESTY — few were eager to accept praise without question & even fewer still without giving some sort of credit to another. ❝I think she's lucky to have you to work with, too.❞ & the express is better off for it, to have two people who know their way around maintaining it.

❝Even with a million lifetimes, I never managed to learn a thing about how to keep the express running.❞

( even when they had traversed the stars on the express themselves, they hadn't known much of how it functioned. there was little need: not when THEY still walked amongst the people & THEIR pre-destined path had not been cut short. )

❝I'm glad to hear that it hasn't been anything you can't handle.❞ Should the day come the express crew could not handle matters alone, then Aether would gladly step in, but he always held hope it would never come to that.

This crew, thus far, have been more than capable of treading their own paths with ease & he wouldn't want to get in the way of that if it wasn't necessary.

❝I've been keeping out of trouble, if that's your concern.❞ He does not mention how he has trailed the express from time-to-time, nor how his search for THEM has been fruitless. That isn't anything new, & there's no need to bring it up. ❝There's nothing of interest to say, really.❞ & he wishes there was.

❝Thank you.❞ He murmurs after another moment of silent. ❝For the chai, and... asking after me.❞ Very few people did, nowadays, not least because Aether's attitude lent to the idea he's more optimistic than anything else.

❝I've mostly just been following the trail of the express, at the moment. Sight-seeing, you know?❞ There's a somewhat awkward tone hidden within the cheerfulness his voice carries. ❝I.. might join you all for an expedition, sometime. We'll see.❞

I know it probably means nothing but like— the logo they showed in the Legends ZA trailer has a suspicious resemblance to the Aether Foundation logo. Coincidence I think not!

Hauntlight and Cenotaph, a pair of original, public domain characters created for the also public domain book Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, by Edwin Abbot Abbot.

This character reference sheet took like four days to make.

[ID: Two images, both compilations of drawings of two original characters, Hauntlight and Cenotaph.

The first drawing, which focuses on Hauntlight, is titled, "Hauntlight - it/its/itself pronouns only, yes, even in mundane, 'all-human' AUs. It's not human, only human-passing, even if born to human parents.

From top to bottom and left to right, the following drawings are labled:

"Daemon / aether / familiar is always a rabbit", showing a simple drawing of a tan rabbit, and a purple and grey shape with three lobes to represent a Flatland rabbit.

Next is a simple black line that has zig-zags and a fork at the end, with the same Flatland rabbit shape next to it for scale, showing it comes up to around where the back section forks.

Next to this is the same zig-zagged line, colored in orange, labled, "Can be thicker, though its exoskeleton is abnormally thin".

Next to this is a crude scribble drawing of a humanoid figure with ink-black skin, withd a dark brown heart shape in the center of its torso, with three stripes on either side like a rib cage. Each ankle and wrist, along with its spade-tipped tail, has two more brown stripes, one thin, one thick. It is missing one eye, with the other orange with a brown pupil. It has pointed ears, a tall asymetrical horn on one side of its head, and grey flopped over hair on the other.

It is labled, "Huamnoid! Asymetrical hair. Triped, cat face, animal ears, 1 horn, stylized grey hair, ink-black skin, 1 eye, needs glasses." Next to its right hand, which we see on the left, is a orange and yellow cane.

After this is a pale human seen from the knees up, labeled, "Human-passing! Earth (with daemons). 'Disguised' as a boy (not really, lol). Gets to have crutches!".

This version of the character is wearing a brown eye patch over its missing left eye, with its other eye black, wearing a grey-brown shirt under a dark brown vest, and warm brown pants with a dark belt. It has wooden forearm crutches, and wears a dark brown newsie cap.

After this is another version of the line from before, labled, "Most simplified! If drawn as a solid shape, should be black or orange", with a smiley face emoji. Next is a "Literal Line", purple with a grey outline, labled, "too short, ran out of paper. Grey exo, 2x repro organs, 1 set functional".

The last form is a humanoid form with three legs and two arms, with a single large cyclops eye in the center of its round head, which is tipped with a swooped arrow like a spear point. It has the same colors and pattern as the earlier humanoid, with ink-black skin and brown markings.

It has the same yellow and orange cane drawn over its right hand, which has an uncolored pencil drawing below it showing three rounded, "long webbed fingers". The rest of the labels are, "three legs", with an arrow pointing at its far left leg, which we see on the right, labeling it "worst leg: left leg", with its simple rounded feet "like hooves". Next to it is a separate spade-tipped tail, labled, "Can have spade tail [because] tails are cool, but not required. Finally, there is a drawing of a large, yellow and orange cyclops goggle labled, "could wear eyeglass if not living under The Current Regime".

The last part of text reads, "Black skin like pen ink, just light enough 2 differentiate from lines, or lineless.".

The second drawing shows three digital drawings on a black background, with white outlines, showing different styles of an original Flatland character, Cenotaph.

The first style is labeled, “Literal Line”, and shows an upward pointing arrow with a small box around the straight tail, with small curved lines coming off the sides, like cilia.

The second is labeled, “Speculative”, and shows a more detailed Flatland version as seen from above. In this form, Cenotaph has a grey exoskeleton, and a body with a rounded main section, and two long ear-shaped sections at the top, with its eye in the center. Its blood is purple, and its brain, lung, stomachs, heart, and reproductive organs are in different shades of pink and dark red.

Attached to the sides of its main body section are two cage-like contraptions with five points boring into Cenotaph’s exoskeleton, with the outside covered in the same short curved likes as the simplified version as cilia or fins. One side of the “swimmer” is colored gold to make it easier to see, the other is greyscale. Where the barbs are injected into Cenotaph’s exoskeleton, there are thick black lines of scar tissue around them.

The final drawing is labled, “Stylized”, and shows a three-dimensional cartoon rabbit walking on all fours, with an orange and yellow wheelchair holding its back legs up off the ground, with orange straps and yellow cushioning. The rabbit is dark brown, with three black stripes on its back, a black fluffy tail, and two stripes, one thick, the other thin, on its ankles and ears, with a single large orange eye with a brown slit pupil in the center of its face instead of a mouth.

This goes DOUBLE for anything that's mainstream + filmic because in that case it's not even necessarily reasonable to assume that the construction of the story was mostly conscious use of various devices. There's also tons to factor in around the production and cultural environments it was made in - which is something that's more streamlined to analyse when it's like, one person writing a book, but which becomes vastly more convoluted (and, frankly, chaotic) once it's collaborative and woven into an industry on multiple fronts.

Which, imo, SHOULD NOT be ignored, but I feel like often is even moreso than when fandom's analysing a book with a single author.

THE BELIEF ANYTHING WOULD LAST ( good or bad or neither ) was a notion Aether had long since abandoned — once, in the naiveity of his youth, ( before he had been walked to a door that existed only to close behind him & forced to cast away his home ), he had believed that good things ( kindness & trust & bonds ) could last for an eternity.

That idea had not lasted long once he was faced with the truth of the universe: not all things were kind.

It had been a long time since he first learned that such an idea was for mortals, for people who would not live long enough to see all that is good & kind & cherished be ripped from them. He knows, in the end, that this is a bias — for it isn't living for so long ( watching stars live & die & planets fade into nothing ) that leaves one watching goodness seep out of the universe.

It is believing that it exists & being willing to hold onto it as it crumbles in one's hands like something that has long-since decayed.

( the only difference a lifespan makes is how many times a person has to lose the good in their life & how desperately they cling to it as it vanishes. )

❝It doesn't.❞ His answers comes after a moment of thought, as if he's not sure of what to say or whether this is a truth worth confirming. In the end, it is honesty he decides on — the painful sort that comes with losing every norm his life has ever had, from travelling along side others ( their sister, the express crews that came before... all things came to an end & with that end came a loneliness that cuts to the bone )

Or the memories that he once created with people he can no longer remember.

( their voices, their faces, the things they loved — even those would someday vanish into the abyss of the mind, destined to fade like everything else )

❝Everything good comes to an end — but so do the bad things.❞ Eventually, a person grew used to that constant cycle of loss & numb to its pain, choosing instead to cling to the kinder things in life. That, in itself, was something that took a sort of strength Aether himself did not possess. That, in itself, is a fate he hopes Kaveh would never have to meet.

❝Things can stay the same for so long that you never think they'll change, that they become a part of your existence you can't detach from.❞ & those things could only be cherished once they were gone.

❝But even those times will come to an end. The path we choose by stepping onto the express is to trailblaze, to create our own paths & look toward the future.❞

( because one cannot traverse the stars if they are constantly staring into the empty space where the past once was. )

❝It's the journey that matters most. Even when it comes to an end, no matter the destination, it shapes you — & that? It'll stay with you with you forever, but nothing else will.❞

The emotions associated with an event were the only thing that would haunt a person, carving out a piece of their heart so long as they lived & continued to go on with their life.

❝Even if none of this lasts... Right now? It's yours. Don't focus on how it'll end, or when. All you can do is let yourself be happy until that time comes.❞

( even if one day, the only piece of that happiness left is the sorrow that comes with knowing it is no longer yours. )
