imagine him developing a crush on someone FIRST but since he can hear their thoughts and knows they dont already like him back, he thinks that that means they never will

because since he hears things so to the point all the time, he doesnt understand the natural progression of relationships and he thinks itd be weird and manipulative if he tried to get someone to like him while he can literally read their mind (which makes sense because there WOULD be a very thin line to tread..)

so he just avoids them and tries to get over it even though there mightve been a good chance that they couldve started liking him soon or even did but hadnt realized it yet themself.......

those olympic edits of athletes running to celebrate with their partners had me thinking about my gadge high school au again so here’s a drabble about that state qualifier that gale secured for his baseball team ok bye 

After a rocky start to the season, the Covington Jays had found their stride; going on a fourteen game winning streak that put them back in play for the state championship for the first time in over a decade.

But only if they won this final regular-season game, and the Fort Treze Rebels were putting up a hell of a fight. Enough to drag the game into extra innings, going run for run. 

From where he stood at second base, Gale watched the raucous welcome for the runners he brought in turn into shouts of Send it, man! as Bristel jogged up to the plate. Behind him, a reinvigorated home crowd. And at its center, a cluster of tar-black hair and keen gray eyes. 

Noticing they had his attention, Posy jumped up, her gap-toothed grin brighter than the stadium lights as she waved at him enthusiastically with both hands.

No, not just waving — pointing. 

To a girl wearing a pretty white dress, emblazoned with a cobalt pin featuring her own last name in bold letters. Gale blinked disbelievingly at her; she winked.

Returning to the field up only one run, the Jays couldn’t afford to give anything up — and that started with Gale. But despite that pressure, he stepped onto the mound with a clear head and something bright and buoyant in his chest.

The first strikeout was swift and decisive: three hard swings that hit nothing but air and shoulderblade. The second — drug out by two fouls and a rogue pitch so high Thom had to jump for it — wasn’t earned so easily. 

The first baseman stepped up to the plate. He was a heavy hitter, and Gale knew that if he got the right pitch, that ball was a goner. 

Gale was known to throw a lethal fastball, but the pitch that really got him attention from scouts was his change-up. It wasn’t something many of his peers had in their arsenals. Batters fell into it like a trap: thinking the ball was coming in hot, only for it to drop to a breezy 78, sailing right below the bat. 

The un-countered momentum of that final swing nearly brought the Rebel to his knees.

The umpire hadn’t even finished calling the strike before a tide of blue and white  swarmed him — rushing in from their positions, tripping over each other clearing the dugout.

Teammates clumsily worked their shoulders under Gale’s legs, lifting him up. And as they jostled him up and down, fellow classmates and family members ran onto the field to join the celebration.

A coach once said that you’d never be able to tell if we was winnin’ or losin’ by lookin’ at Hawthorne’s face. Up five runs or down, Gale remained unruffled and unreadable — getting emotional stimied his game, and letting his opponents see it bolstered theirs. But that was hardly the reason he tolerated hero treatment for only another minute before rolling, throwing his weight down so the team had no choice but to drop him.

And when his cleats hit the ground, and he took off, it wasn’t because he wanted to run away from his team, or their riotous joy. It wasn’t because he wasn’t feeling it himself. 

Gale was running to home plate. Or rather, to the blonde girl in the white dress standing next to it, diamond dust already smudging her glossy heels. 

He swept her right off of them, wrapping her in a spinning embrace. 

Madge clung to him, her legs locked around his waist and her fingers interlaced behind his neck. She was saying something, but it was lost to the celebrations and the thunder of his own heart. 

As cliche as it seemed, Gale was on top of the damn world.

Trusting Madge had a strong enough hold on him, Gale let go of her waist to cup her face in his hands and kiss her. His lips met hers once, twice, before his smile was too big and toothy, and he had to settle for just staring at her in astonishment. 

His cheeks were starting to hurt. “What’re you doing here?” 

Madge leaned back as far as her grip on his neck would allow, getting a good look at him, that rare smile, before answering, “As if I’d miss this.” 

Gale was too caught up in it all — the thrill of victory, the reignited hope of getting another, the girl in his arms — to notice the reporter for the local paper until after the blinding flash of the camera.

I realise a lot of the discourse around Markhelly vs Markgemma treats this as a classic ship war, but I realise that is sort of missing the point.

I don't think Markgemma is supposed to represent simply a past/old/alternative relationship, it's supposed to represent a past/old/alternative identity for Mark first and foremost.

We often focus a lot on how the dynamics between Mark and Helly and Mark and Gemma are different (as I have done myself here), but the point is: they are not just different because Helly and Gemma are different women and complement (or not) Mark in different ways, but because it is a different Mark. Many of the juxtapositions are not about how differently Helly and Gemma approach Mark, but how differently the two versions of Mark approach his partner.

The most glaring example is o!Mark's lack of interest in what his partner has to say: and note that this does not happen just with Gemma but with Alexa too! When he tells her she's from Minnesota instead of Montana, it's the ants vs plants all over again. This lack of attention to what his partner says is a feature of his personality, which might relatively harmless in the beginning but as the relationship progresses and the stakes and difficulties increase, it becomes a big deal. "I'm nervous"/"I said I love you", and so on.

Contrast this with i!Mark's laser focus on Helly's needs, his making it his mission to make sure she's happy, his not giving up even when she was at her most confrontational and pushing him away and not giving him an inch. It's obviously hard to say if i!Mark's attention to his partner's needs and ability to listen and respond appropriately is because of Helly or because it's a personality trait, because he's never been with another woman. But I would guess it's likely the latter.

And it makes me wonder: if the premise is clearly that the innies are the outies minus their life experience and conditioning, what in o!Mark's life caused him to become such a polar opposite of his innie when it comes to relationships? That is the biggest mystery at the moment to me, because with Helena it's pretty easy to understand how and why she turned out the way she did. But Mark? Is it all down to his relationship with his "misdiagnosed alcoholic" father that we don't know much about? Was it something about his parents' dynamic that imprinted on him? Is there more?

Initially an Alexa-style assistant (in that it could do practically nothing and was very irritating) it develops over the years into a more advanced system. Eventually one of its units is reprogrammed to sound like a dead (I guess depending on your definition of dead, but his hearts not beating and he hasn’t moved in 44 years) character named Gordon. The AI renames itself “GORD” when a character expresses discomfort referring to it as Gordon. It says, and I quote, “Just think of a small pumpkin” —@mcskullmun

HERA IS THE BEST. she's an AI that tried to escape containment (slavery) because she didn't like what she was made to be, so they gave her anxiety because she was too powerful. She runs a whole spaceship all on her own, made friends with the world's most useless guy, and feels lonely even when she's with her crew because she feels like she's not properly with them. very beautiful very powerful. She broke her programming so she could kill people if she felt she needed to. She holds grudges if people fuck her over. She's experiencing emotions for the first time and she does NOT know how to cope (#relatable)

The 'mother program' of the space station Hephaestus, Hera was booted into space because she was a glitchy, rebellious mess of an AI and she resents that so much and she has a lot of shame over being 'broken'. She is four years old and so angry and is trapped using customer service voice forever and is learning ways to get around that and express herself and defy the people who would keep her down. Her episode "Memoria" made me cry. Best podcast AI of all time.

She's everything to me. She fights for every inch of respect she is given, she insists on her personhood and right to she/her pronouns, she's full of anxiety and self doubt and she justifiably is bent on killing this one guy! on top of that, she's bound by AI rules and protocols, but there's a whole bit where she talks about finding ways around that in order to do what she wants to do. She doesn't have hands so I'm going to high five a wall of this space station instead

reblogs off thoughts: i hate how we didn't get a single clear shot of cold harbor gemma's face/reaction to mark entering the room; i still don't believe that the same mark s sprinting and SCREAMING about gemma being alive in the s1 finale would so quickly be so cavalier about her death and i don't believe that the events we saw him go through in season 2 would change his perspective that much; i do agree with the view of the mark s/helly r relationship as teenage first love where you think that nothing can compare bc you don't have the life experience for anything else and i would feel confident in arguing that through the framing of this season as adolescene & the explicit "the graduate" homage at the end of the episode that the text of the show would agree with me; i really hope that mark scout's disproportional emphasis on gemma as ~~his wife~~ (emphasis on the ownership) is a deliberate choice by the writers that's gonna go somewhere and that we'll see how she feels about it but i'm not holding my breath; i loved seeing adam scott and darri olafsson and gwendoline christie in an all-out bloody drag em out biting fight; loved seeing the pristine white hallways covered in blood; this show really just does ship off its women of color into the unknown once they're done serving their exposition dump/plot forwarding purpose huh (alexa, felicia, reghabi, miss huang, etc); i loved helly getting to make a big rousing speech and getting to do something other than "be wide-eyed supportive love interest" but i've gotta be so honest the imagery of her standing on a desk in front of a crowd of mostly black young people was giving hilary swank in freedom writers to me; for all their fire about standing up for innies and saving the severed floor it's frustrating to me that mark s and helly couldn't/took so long to see that gemma is in the same situation as them but arguably like 10000000x worse. i could be swayed by an argument that they're supposed to be like short-sighted teenagers but it seemed a little toooooo convenient for the plot & to build tension. like idk i feel like the central theme of season 1 was them seeing other innies as their comrades rather than enemies and it's upsetting that they couldn't/took so long to see gemma as the same; idk i will probably add more to this later if you've made it this far ty

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

um...Ruined? I wouldn't say so. But there are certain sections of the fandom where I definitely limit my engagement. Solavellan is the easy one (I'm not anti-solavellan but there is a very toxic sect of them that I'm holding a crucifix to, personally)

But since these are SALTY asks and we're going for controversy (?) My confession is that I did a second run of Veilguard where I romanced Lucanis and I actually don't mind the romance! i thought it was sweet! But um...some of the Rookanis girlies (gender-neutral) have kind of ruined the hype of it for me. Which has a lot to do with the fact that there's so much overflow of Rookanis to the Davrin tag AND a lot to do with the fact that so many Rookanis shippers don't even seem to like his romance? They just think he's hot. And also they just um...need some perspective, I fear. (if I see more complaints about his 'cut content' I'm going to scream and cry).

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated

Umm I don't think I've ever hated a ship? What I can say is that I was personally very Blackwall-averse (idk he just was overly chivalrous in a way that felt suspicious to me) but I've seen people talk about his romance and watched a playthrough on youtube and I'm less averse?

You know what, I don't know if this counts but Evka and Antoine. I just love them & they are perfect (:

Alternatively, I'll go Laash? I just think those two fit together really well, People pleaser Harding who needs to be told it's okay to be angry and Taash needs someone to remind them there's good in the world. Taash would stand up for Harding when she needs it, and I think people pleaser Harding really needs someone where there's no pretense or minced words. I just think they're really well matched!

22. Popular character you hate?

OKAY SO this is a difficult question, because I don't hate a lot of characters? Even ones I dislike personality-wise I usually think are well written. I've seen a lot of Anders hate today (which I agree with) but since I'm airing my grievances, I'll go Solas (These two are actually so similar but that's for a different post). SORRY TO THE SOLAVELLANS!

I do think a lot of my hate for him is born of the toxic side of his fandom particularly, but ALSO he's just so pretentious the first time you talk to him in DAI. He just comes at you like He Knows Best and it's like...yeah with the added context that he IS Fen'harel, he does actually know what he's talking about but it always annoyed me that he's like "I know everything and no one ever listens *dramatic sigh*" like yeah...maybe it's because you're kind of a dick about it??? I am less inclined to listen to people who are assholes, personally.

Also sorry, but he does this thing where he's mad because you ruined his plans but like...my brother in christ you did not tell me the plan?? ik it's a popular hc that they grew up together but i don't really share that. i think peter is either a kent or essex boy (i'm undecided) and james is from liverpool. they met when sorted into gryffindor and fairly quickly became friends

peter didn't know much about quidditch, then found out james was a massive fan and suddenly was an expert and also a huge fan overnight (he took an all-nighter and studied up on the sport)
