Hey Froggie! I need to take better product photos indoors. I have a decent camera, and great success shooting outside, but I really hate being at the whims of the weather when I need pics of new items. Most of what I shoot is small (under 1 foot long, often 6” or less), and I’m setting up small staging areas with little props for them. I have a couple tabletop lights with tracing paper covers to diffuse them a bit, but I struggle getting enough light. If I only have space and budget for one big floor light, is there a model or brand you’d recommend looking at for maximum lighting returns?

I've been struggling with some health issues and don't have a lot of energy. But I did want to give you a few quick suggestions and hopefully if I feel better in the future I can answer more in depth. I've been wanting to make a post about this with cheap lights and basic equipment and shooting my own examples, but the energy has eluded me.

Without a budget it's hard to give a recommendation for new lights, but COB (chip on board) video lights can be found for around $100-150 these days. I would say 2 of those with a "bowens mount" would be able to do just about any product photography with no trouble. The bowens mount allows you to apply photography grade reflectors, diffusors, soft boxes, etc. Neewer is a budget brand that makes surprisingly sturdy equipment. It's an investment, but you will find working with proper lights will make things a lot easier.

That said, I have used ordinary desk lamps with great success. Better lights are easier to work with and much more convenient, but light is light. I was just playing around with my mom's red stapler that she liked because it was red and didn't realize it was from Office Space.

I used desk lamps, diffusion material, and also... a smartphone. And while it was a bit of a pain in the ass compared to my old studio setup, I was really surprised with the results.

I do miss my studio though.

But I'm hoping to rebuild it soon.

My point being... having better lights isn't always necessary and you may find it does not improve your situation much without changing a few other important things.

First, if you shoot with a tripod you can increase your shutter speed and even if the lights aren't very bright, they can still work. You just need to be sure you are in a very dark environment and the lights for your photos are the only ones affecting the exposure. You don't want light from a window or overhead light mucking things up.

But I think your biggest issue is how you are using diffusion. Tracing paper is actually great inexpensive diffusion, especially for gradient lighting. (Savage Translum or Lee Filters 216 white diffusion would be the professional equivalent). But by attaching it directly to the light you are limiting your options greatly. I would create tracing paper panels that you can move closer and farther away from your lights. Just create some kind of DIY frame so you can stand them up vertical and move them around your lights. Or you can just hold the diffusion in front of the light if you need to. Make the panels as big as your space allows.

By seperating the diffusion from the lights you can play with moving things closer and farther apart. Move the light closer for a harder light source. Move the tracing paper panels closer to your subject for a larger light source. The permutations are endless and a lot of fun to experiment with.

Just remember...

Bigger light source = soft light Small light source = hard light Light close to tracing paper = short gradient Light far from tracing paper = long gradient

When using the tracing paper, remember the surface area of the paper is your light source, not your actual light. So the closer you move that surface to your subject, the bigger and softer the light becomes.

So to summarize, make your room really dark, put the camera on a tripod, get the tracing paper off the lights and see what you can come up with.

Also, here is a Karl Taylor video where he uses only desk lamps to do a high end wine bottle photo. His "scrims" or diffusion panels are huge and you can build your own much smaller. They only need to be that big if you start taking photos of bigger stuff.

Recently, I was in a car accident. My face is covered in scars and I lost both my left eye and my nose. Sparky, my pawmot that I had since i was six, now growls and makes distressed noises whenever I'm near and tries to zap me when I try to touch her. Anything I can do? Getting rid of her is not an option. I just want my best friend back...

i'm sorry to hear that, and i hope your recovery goes well.

the pawmi line are extremely social pokemon that form tight bonds with each other. they're also prey pokemon, which makes them fearful of change. she's noticing that something is different about a major social bond in her life, and it's going to take her time to adjust to that. it must be difficult to go through this, but over time she'll get used to the changes. she absolutely hasn't forgotten you- she's just reckoning with the part of her that tells her to be afraid of things that are different.

spending time in the same room as her, even if she doesn't come very close, will help get her comfortable with your new appearance. if you're up to talking some walks with her or even doing a little battling, those are major bonding activities between a pawmot and its trainer. if you can establish a social routine with her, especially by doing activities you did together before your accident, that will also help ease her back into feeling comfortable. even if it's tough, let her interact with you at her own pace, and before too long she'll realize you're still her best buddy.

in the meantime, you can try using some scent therapy to help her stay calm. sweet scent diffusors have been proven to have some calming effects, especially on herbivorous pokemon; theyre a little pricey, but ive seen some of our feistiest shelter pokemon settle down in response to them when we've gotten samples.

Familiar Strangers Shoot

This was the only film that I worked on that was all exterior. From a lighting perspective this brought about new challenges but also simplified the work that I could do. As we were shooting outdoors with no generators and limited batteries, I wasn't given much variety in lighting choices. This was annoying as it's my main interest and why I was brought to work on the film. However, it meant that I had to think more creatively and use reflectors & diffusors in more ways than I had before. For instance, the skylite is something I've not used before but Max booked it out for this film. It was really useful in keeping lighting soft and diffused, especially in changable weather conditions across the 3 days I helped. In some aspects, this shoot was reminiscent of Bowl as the exterior scenes had to motivate sunlight with the challenge of keeping it consistent.

This was largely succesful however because we were shooting over a larger area with less time for each shot, the process was a bit more stressful than it was on Bowl.

What are you thinking feeling about the idea of change? It's a heap. "I am free to be what i want to be"

Today i am wearing my challis dress in blue and ive got on a shoe i dont care for. I look as if im going somewhere now - to see the new city.

I leave the porch and take a walk. I climb three more steps and branch forward out. I'm full of hope and guidance as i walk the path forward. My memories are gentle now and the walk isnt as sad as it could be. The dress glides with me around every curve until my identity is changed.

In the distance where no one is watching multiple thuds, stomping is recognized and someone topples over with relief. I am accepting the seat of a neighbor's offering and wait to be recognized again.

That's when my dress is dusted off and i am swung back in motion. i make a wish for a good reason to dance down the road. I turn right and left and make a small climb up toward a square of burlap that says im so glad you're here in a bold arrangement of rainbow.

I open the door and am greeted by a soothing wave of coconut: my dwelling.

I drop my things on the table and check the refrigerator for the tea i made before I went to check the mail. The sound of crackling plastic solidifies my arrival further as i move swiftly in the kitchen to put together a steak sandwich.

I gobble it up at the desk while my sim poses triumphantly amidst her own creation and turn on my essential oil diffusor. I like it lit up in here and make a celebration of it as the shade makes its play across the room.

Everything is fine and I'm certain going to sleep tonight as I'm full and proud of the adventure that may or may not happen instead. Will i… take off for the happy mat, the couch or my freshly invigorated bed?

I go for the bed and let Hulu hollow my face. I'm watching talking cartoon animals, but they seem so calm to each other i think I'm part of the crowd. :D I'm gonna watch this again.

Somehow what I've been reading paid off in the night hours. I notice when I don't wake up crying on my way to the bathroom - my feet are flat on the ground after - all. I get dressed and make my way back to the computer desk - I've been working to make the food journal into a writing course. The practice devotional was encouraging my industriousness after i caught up with what i've asked for - i should focus this way again on Sundays too, I consider on.

In a back room somewhere a smartphone chirps with vibrance and flies off its seat and small clams scuttle. A river calms and the sun burst through a marvelous city.

I'm sitting in a tiny room with my purple glitter scissors cutting stuff up and eyes glow back at me upon assembly - this one is purple and pink. I give one to a friend because I made three. They live in the vicinity but also in town. I'm a freak about walking to see them.

When i visit i take my futurecard with me - there’s an otherworldly thrift shop around the corner that reminds me i dont have to have it all. I go for a red top and khaki pants for nostalgia.

That night i sleep tight and wake up returned to the couch where I've reconnected a small fan. It's the hour where the property expands like fresh milk which spills into my bedroom as a reminder of true beauty. I hold still while admiring its light. The buildings that are outside now care for each piece of brick it houses and all is washed in white.

When ive finished cleaning my apartment of all the debree of suffering what i have to purchase is more teak, mocha, m.a.c, inkjet and medication for my fashion glasses from Walmart (because they have visuals). I go crawl in bed holding my blanket, the only one, and snap a pic of myself in solitude.

I was happy as a clam but when i step out in beige its time to regain my composure. Today I've got 10 printouts of the daybook how to and four jars with a request of 10$ on them. I also make 5 copies of a daybook in blue and 5 copies of a daybook in red. I know exactly where i will put them.

The glory of the trees are upon me as i make my way. I'm not so flat with a full heart so i sit down and reconsider my thoughts. I'm hungry. There is a perfect bologna and cheese sandwich right around the corner. I purchase 3, classic Lays, cherry coke + a cookie & turn away.

I go to the laundry side of things to gather myself and return to the counter and offer the cashier my jar who warmly accepts after making a couple donations. I leave enlightened but in a good way - they chose a blue one & a red one too.

The walk back into the library district is energizing. I bounce over the railroad tracks. By the time i walk the curve a coolness picks up my body and I am once again returned home where the grass is hard with summer, and I am a bird of paradise.

France was weird.

There was also something strange with the car all along even if Charles can do wonders in qualifying.

Maybe he could have been more careful seeing how the balance was not there and that would be his mistake.

It’s like he was frustrated and he had to win races by that point for the WDC not just take podiums. And it came after lots of disapointment (except autria)

I feel like the mistake in imola was worse because at that stage he shouldn’t have taken that risk as the championship was much more possible then. And the car was good. Coming to France it was already another story if RB (max) had no technical difficulties.

Ferrari really went the wrong way with car developpement this year. And RB made a really really great car (+ max as a driver of course)

This is the AMuS bit:

GER: Das Defizit auf den Geraden trieb Ferrari so um, dass man auf Teufel komm raus Abtrieb im Unterboden suchte, um den Luftwiderstand der Flügel zu verringern. Das aber ging zu Lasten der aerodynamischen Stabilität. Seit in Frankreich der neue Unterboden kam, ist der Wurm drin. ENG: The deficit on the straights annoyed Ferrari so much that they desperately tried to find extra downforce in the floor to be able to use smaller wings with less drag. But this was at the expense of the aerodynamic stability. Since they brought the new floor in France there have been issues. translated by me and I explained the wings bit a bit more

They wanted to have more downforce from the floor, did it in a way where it shifted the balance more rear ward. And especially in France I think they were trying real hard to compensate for that shift in balance.

Charles car in France was pretty twitchy. I would assume because they tried hard to give him more front but didn't fully understand their setup window properly.

Still Charles mistake! But the car was twitchy the whole weekend and he had quite a few oversteer moments.

I don't think I can go and say this mistake was worse than the other. They were pretty different. Charles just has the luck to have small moments that end up having pretty big consequences.

But yeah in France even if he says he wasn't he was definitely trying to compensate for the 5 races before Austria. And people like to pretend that he was cruising but he wasn't because he had already been undercut and was on dead tyres.

Imola sucked but I think that was just a learning moment. And in general was something he had to learn. That sometimes you just have to bring it home.

For next year I think they just need to be a little bit more careful with changing the balance mid season. They didn't change the floor purely to change the balance but it was an aspect.

Next year will be interesting balance wise in general just because the 2023 Pirelli tyres are meant to reduce understeer in especially slow speed corners and the updated floor regs with the higher diffusor throat might reduce the rear downforce as a whole.

Which theoretically sounds like it lends itself to more oversteery cars. Or that they'll have to run bigger rear wings. We'll see!

I just hope that they don't change the balance mid-season again and then fuck up their setup windows. And I hope that we won't see another mid-season TD that'll fuck Ferrari.

EVALUATION

Seeing The Light, Brief 1

This first brief was very instructive. We had time to do some research, prep, test shoots and then do the actual shoots, select and edit the photos, reflect on them, get some feedbacks, change our mind, edit them again differently according to the brief requirements, get some more feedbacks and finally make a final choice with what we had.

I learned so much from this experience. First, get a real understanding of light, study natural light and try and use it to make the best out of it. I learned how to work with reflectors, diffusors and all sorts of light modifiers and how to use a light meter. All these new elements were not easy to manipulate at first, especially with no assistance and not a very nice weather despite checking all the forecast apps I found. I liked working around the unpredictability of the weather though because I learned a lot about the different qualities of light and could see a big variation in the results as I had very different lights for all these shoots. I also cropped almost all the final images which was an interesting process as I had to really question what my main focus was on every one of them.

Lucy at the pond

This first one was a bit tricky as I had a couple of test shoots beforehand and wanted to reuse the pond in Queens Park but my friend was free on an overcast day. Seeing it was still bright, I decided to give it a go. I only used a prism because I like what it was doing but I couldn't manage to work out a reflector on top of it because of the weather so I didn't manage to get some light properly bounced off her face. I realised the use of the prism was interesting to obtain a nice effect on the photograph but was very hard to manipulate and get an even brightness overall. I really liked the experience though and will do it again, with a reflector on a better day this time. The feedback on this specific shoot was really useful as I changed my mind a few times and submitted another photograph in the end, editing the photo in Photoshop to lighten her face mainly. I think I got away with it eventually although next time I'll try and get it right on camera.

The viewpoint was my parameter on this task and I noticed how the expression changes according to different points of view and how we see the sitter. The dynamic changes and gives more or less assertiveness to the sitter whether you look from below or above, whether you get a direct look or a profile look.

Rory with the hat

The weather was sunny that afternoon, almost too bright as I had to deal with harsh light and nothing to diffuse it as I was by myself. I played with my friend's hat and was quite happy about what it was doing so I used it as a flag. I like the location I used for this shoot because it mixed different types of architecture, colours and materials so I decided to focus on the focal length parameter for this one.

The main thing I realised was how good it could be to use a 60mm or above to get closer to the subject without being physically close to them. It creates an interesting dynamic I wasn't really aware of before. I finally chose the longer focal length for my final choice and cropped it even more to have a very close portrait as I think the composition with a diagonale shadow on his face created something interesting.

Next time I think I'll find a way to diffuse the light maybe a bit also because it was hard to deal with such a harsh direct light. I could tell my sitter wasn't always comfortable.

Rosie, my pregnant friend

The challenge for this brief was also quite practical as I wanted to shoot four different people with four different lights and I could have a shoot with my pregnant friend only on a rainy Sunday. I checked the weather all day and saw it was supposed to be ok around 5 which was the start of golden hour last month. I am very happy with how it turned out because although I had to find a better spot than I originally planned, the spot that I used with the trees was perfect in the end. The light was really lovely and my friend was glowing.

I used a golden reflector to accentuate the colour autumns and the leaves were creating a nice flag overall. I chose to edit it quite naturally as the light was so beautiful and cropped it a little bit to focus more on my subject. The difficulty for me was more about the parameter I chose, the aperture. I didn't really know how to make the photo interesting using narrow apertures as I really wanted to focus on my subject. I wasn't that bothered about the background so I did it for the exercise but can't say I managed to be very creative playing with apertures on this shoot.

Andrew and the hand shadow

Finally, the weather turned out really unpredictable for this last shoot with my pal Andrew as it changed constantly and quite drastically. I managed to get five minutes of nice sunshine so I chose one photo from these five minutes in the end as his hand created a nice flag and I got a nice catchlight in his eyes as well. The last parameter I had to work on was the composition so I felt a bit more free to play with technical parameters on my camera and play with my subject a bit more, on the floor, sitting down, lying down, hiding behind the tree etc. I think it was more fun and I could be more creative. I liked the idea of reusing the longer focal length after my trial with Rory, so that I could be close to my subject without him realising it. I also had different backgrounds which were interesting to blur with a longer length. I think what I mainly learned from this shoot was to reschedule if the weather was not meant to be that good. I liked adapting to the situation and try and be more efficient and forward on this last shoot but I was left with less choice in the end because the weather was not that great and my pal had to go to work so our time was also a bit limited, which is always a little bit frustrating. I also tried different types of reflectors which were interesting but didn't turn out that good (shiny wrapping paper).

Overall I liked that every shoot was challenging in its own way and that I learned a lot from all of them. I'll try and be more aware of the quality of light and time I shoot at from now on.

Now usually I hate cleaning chemicals when it comes to aquariums but I'd be lying if I said cleaning your co2 diffuser with watered down thin bleach isn't one of the most satisfying things, you plop it in the solution covered in algae and it's comes out looking brand new in about 10 minute's

(Do make SUPER sure NO bleach gets into the aquarium!!!, leave the diffusor in a separate tub with water and dechlorinator for a minute or 2, or wash it really well. Before you put it back in)

Edit. Also make sure the co2 is Still on so no bleach can get into the diffuser.

Hannah Watches LoSH - Chain of Command

Ho boy... has it been a while since I've been doing this. I apologize to everyone for the wait, but a lot of things been going on for me IRL. I recently got approval for student loans so I’m just waiting for that to come in before school, which will be full time this next semester. I'm trying to resume this on a regular basis as means with coping with recent... frustrations.

Also, if you notice inconsistencies with the different gifs regarding fonts, that is because I was busy figuring out how to make sure they stood out. And then I had computer problems right as i was halfway done making all of them. And then I thought I lost them.

BUT WHILE MOST OF THE FILES WERE OKAY, I HAD TO GO AND FIND EACH GODDAMN INDIVIDUAL FONT.

So if it takes me a while to get the next one out, know that there is a good chance it’s because I had a heart attack OR/AND I seem to take my frustrations out on my pillow via screaming...

Chain of Command

We kick off the episode with the Cruiser going highspeed someplace, while the Legion are trying to maintain contact with people, Lightning Lad seeming to be the most concerned.

Wow the same face syndrome here is worse than with Disney.

Lightning Lad asks the people on screen how they're holding up, to which they reply that they need help as the storm they're experiencing is getting worse.

You gotta give this show credit for constantly making Bouncy pilot on board.

Oh. That ain't good.

DON’T GIVE THIS PLANET SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE TREATMENT GARTH!

… Ohhhh...

As soon as the opening finishes playing, we see the Cruiser is still speeding, and Lightning Lad is incredibly anxious about arriving to his home planet. To the point he's constantly asking for updates from the team.

Sooo history class time?

He then goes to describe Winath, stating it's the "breadbasket of the galaxy", as it provides most of the galaxies food supply.

Certainly makes his farm boy insults from the first episode look weak.

But he moves on to discuss that cosmic storms used to be a big problem for Winath until they built "THE CORE DIFFUSOR STATION". A station that turns storm energy to usable energy. But unfortunately, the current storm is way more powerful than the maximum the station can handle, which makes the Legion's first priority to make sure the station doesn’t overload.

Awwww~

However, as soon as they approach the planet, turns out that storm is way worse than anticipated. Saturn Girl manages to get in contact with the people on the planet that are in the shelter.

SO MANY TWINS.

Ah, parents... gonna have to discuss them later.

Saturn Girl you should have caught him in your arms. You're the only one who hasn't!

Seeing as the Cruiser wasn’t built for the storm either, Lightning Lad instructs the Trips and Bouncy to stay on board while everyone else takes the battle pod.

Wait. Battle pod?

Huh.

Don't crash, this isn't the Intergalactic games.

Well, that's what he get for telling another person to do something outside their capabilities.

Unsurprisingly, Lightning Lad crash lands. Typical.

And that's why Lightning Lad is not the pilot on the usual schedule...

Upon entering, the place looks trashed but Lightning Lad says they got there just in time. Mm-hm.

Whom?

Aww he lookin a little heartbroken for a moment~

Bromance.

And then the introduction between Superman and Cosmic Boy. And honestly, Cosmic Boy starts to fanboy a bit.

JEALOUS GARTH!

Lightning Lad demands to know what Cosmic Boy is doing on Winath, and he states they got a distress call...

Wait. Plural?

Turns out he brought someone along. Ferro Lad.

Ok I can't help but laugh a little bit at this.

Cosmic Boy encourages Ferro Lad to demonstrate his powers, which is turning into Metal. And then Lightning Lad interrupts. He tries to give orders, but Cosmic Boy quickly overrides him, having Superman Lighting Lad and Colossal Boy and Ferro Lad stabilize the building while he and Saturn Girl and B5 go to the core.

Aww.

He snaps out of his emo mode pretty quickly though and goes to work.

The core meanwhile is well beyond f***ed, making Cosmic Boy project a magnetic field over the central part, but doesn't seem like it will last.

Outside, Lightning Lad is whining to Superman about Cosmic Boy about bringing in a new member with no audition, only for Superman to say it seems like a good choice.

Wow, it's like this show loves making Superman compatible with just about everyone.

Unfortunately, the generator they were trying to put back together outside overloads.

Ouch.

He isn't able to contain the core, and Brainy is unable to work on it, and the radiation happens to be building, getting ready to blow. When trying to reaching Superman, due to communication problems caused by radiation from the core. But who needs communicators when you got Saturn Girl?

She quickly instructs Superman to get the core out ASAP, and he does. But when it blows, he passes out, making it impossible for her to reach him.

As Superman is falling back to Winath, Bouncy goes to save him.

What a pure relationship.

Unfortunately, they lose sight of him in what I assume is smoke. THankfully he lands on the ship.

Bouncy then has to maneuver the ship to prevent debris hitting them, which does make superman tumble, but Triplicate Girl catches him from the hatch door.

But the debris decides that the cruiser isn't enough to pick on, and targets the guys that are still on the ground, while throwing in cyclones into the mix. So ground team goes to meet up with inside team.

As there is no core to help pacify the weather, Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad get into an argument on getting the system back online vs saving whatever they can.

When Lightning Lad asks who's going, much to his surprise, Ferro Lad and Colossal Boy volunteer. Brainy stays, being the nerd he is.

And there's the jerk persona again.

While outside and fixing a bridge, Ferro Lad confronts Lightning Lad.

Okay. That would include the entire BatFam on Lighting Lad's suspicious people list.

… WELL NOW I DO.

Back on the cruiser:

TRIPLICATE GIRL IS THE TEAM MEDIC!

Bouncy notices a pattern to the storm, but gets ignored by the ground team. And then despite protests, Superman leaves as well.

I feel u.

Meanwhile, Brainy is building a replacement for the old core. When Saturn Girl asks what she can do, Cosmic Boy tells her to step back so she doesn’t get hurt.

The outdoor squad is still struggling with the damn but Lighting Lad flies off when he sees a farm getting wasted by the debris, despite Colossal Boy's statement on not being able to save everything.

He tries to blast away the hail that's falling, but can only split the largest piece in half, which still does a lot of damage. Superman does arrive to help knock the hail stones away, but the ground starts to fall out from underneath.

DUDE THE HOUSE IS FALLING APART WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO GET YOURSELF KILLED?!

Wait. That room.

Oh.

OH SHIT OW NO STOP MY HEART IS NEVER READY FOR THIS PART

Just as the house is going into the ground, Lightning Lad flies out just in time.

Ow.

After this, we cut to Lightning Lad telling Superman that it was his home.

OW.

Saturn Girl contacts them to inform them that Brainy fixed the power system, and they fly off to go back.

When asked where she’s going, Saturn Girl states she's going to the shelter, to which Cosmic Boy says she's too vulnerable. And thus she lays down the best burn she made yet on this show.

List of things that have happened to her beforehand:

-Carried off by Timber Wolf while he was in full feral mode

-Nearly blasted by Alexis

-Trapped in a fear-feeding abomination of a space station AND GOING THROUGH HER WORST FEAR OF ROLLER COASTERS

-Trapped in the Phantom Zone

She’s dealt with worse.

Ok if even Brainy, one of the least sociable of the group, knows you f***ed up, then you f***ed up big time.

Back on the cruiser, Bouncy predicts where the next massive part of the storm will hit. The damn, where it will rupture, causing mudslide and sinkhole at the shelter.

But the people on the planet won't listen. At first.

YAS BOI

Yeee

With everyone finally getting in line, Bouncy gives instructions.

As the boys are working on this, Saturn Girl arrives to the shelter, offering assurance they will be ok.

Back with the boys, yes I know, that was fast, Lightning Lad starts a fire intentionally, and Superman moves a tornado, directing the flood into what I assume is another river, lake or possibly ocean. It ain't a pond, I know that.

The station finally goes back online, and it seems to be functioning.

WElp, Brainy certainly likes to leave his signature.

So pure~

Back with Saturn Girl as she and the Winathians begin exiting.

Sarcastic SG is what I live for.

Lighting Lad arrives, with the picture he saved from the house. But doesn't go for Saturn GIrl.

Hmm.

We cut to the cruiser leaving Winath, and Cosmic Boy and Lighting Lad soon dissolve into another argument.

Wait, MONTHS?! Yeah, Lightning Lad has a right here to be mad, give an update at least once a week.

Fair enough. If Lightning Lad knew where you were, he probably would have made a massive bad impression.

I thought that was Tinya's role... then again I doubt she enjoys it.

Aww, poor ferro lad.

So, to put this argument into the ground, they hold an election. Probably will end better than the american ones can.

Nothing but respect for my team leader.

THIS SHIP IS CANNON!

Is Mekt in jail? Or do you consider him more of a nuisance on the level of STAR FINGAH?

But yeah I guess nothing can go wrong.

… SHIT.

So final thoughts on the episode overall and the characters

This was the first episode without a villain character. The main conflict is among the team and trying to keep the planet from being shredded. It's also the only episode with no villain character. I really wish we got more episodes like this, or even on the Legion's everyday mundane lives.

As for the storm plot point, it does remind me a lot of actual natural disasters and nuclear disasters. Which I think from a writing stance is a good thing.

Now. Winath. In all honestly, I kind of want to do a whole post on Winath culture and on the Ranzz family and my personal thoughts, but I'll put some tidbits of that discussion in here.

Big source for food in the galaxy. How big is that planet? Earth size? Moon size? Seems suspicious they only showed us one shelter and that there's only one station, so I'll have to go with moon, maybe smaller. So that should mean that year-round it is the optimal place for most crops. Minus cosmic storms.

But onto the whole subject of why there are so many twins.

In the comics, it was completely normal for twin births, while solo children are the minority. We aren't given any particular reason why though. We did see some people without twins in the shelter, but that doesn’t mean they weren't born single.

Another thing from the comics I want to mention is that Solo children were stereotyped as psychopaths.

Hmm. Wonder how that could possibly negatively impact kids who were solo on Winath. I said sarcastically, looking at a certain trash baby.

When I first watched this, this was when I started doing research into the old Legion comics. Where Mekt was about as sane as a cat on catnip. And had no sense of fashion.

Yes, of course I'm bringing the Trash Lord into discussion, he was in a photo! Don't worry, I'll keep the topic on him short.

Mm. He doesn't seem very happy. Pretty distant from everyone else. Gonna have to go with the possibility that solo children don't get the best treatment on Winath.

… Wonder how he felt hearing about the whole event for this episode?

And then there is the subject of Mr. and Mrs. Ranzz. How did they treat their sons exactly? Because clearly they love Garth and he did a lot of accomplishments, but Mekt came out as a mess.

In a post from Tom Bierbaum, who worked on the comics, located here, he describes the family as ”...Bit of a mixed bag. There was a lot of good there, but the parents were probably highly accomplished, career-driven people who expected nothing less of their kids but were so wrapped up in their own responsibilities that they weren't giving their kids the kind of attention and support they'd need to reach their positive potentials.”

One thing to keep in mind is that the family were a bunch of farmers. And farming is not easy. So it is possible that being too busy was one of the reasons that the kids ended up as they did, although unintentionally.

But I just gotta mention something based on personal experience.

So most of my Dad’s side of the family live in North Carolina and were in the countryside and worked with farms.

And most of them conservatives.

Like, racist homophobic conservatives.

You can imagine how uncomfortable I, a biracial pansexual Latina girl, can get around them.

So, based on a personal experience, I am suspicious if there was some neglect towards Mekt as he was a minority that was discriminated against, and favoritism towards Garth and Ayla for being twins.

But it’s hard to say given that we barely see them or their behaviors.

Moving on.

Now the actual characters in the episode.

Starting with Superman. His fanbase grows. Not much development but we also see he's a little impulsive here, judging by how fast he went to get back out of the cruiser.

Brainy doesn't get much development either. But he definitely seems far more open to people now, given he was smiling at Cosmic Boy. Smiling. Our little grouchy pants. SMILING. The writers are keeping consistent with how he has been becoming more and more open to people emotionally, as well as expressive.

And then we have Colossal Boy. This is his second speaking role episode. He seems rather close to Cosmic Boy. Not exclusive to pet names. Which does warrant... shipping grounds. As far as character development goes, it is interesting to note that even though he's close to Cosmic Boy, he volunteers to help Lightning Lad outside the core. So, he might be more pro-active than CB1. But he also says Brainy has a big head. This could be seen as a jab at B5 because of his intelligence, but Brainy also asked if he could get any smaller than what he currently was. Perhaps being asked go get smaller is something he has to deal with frequently, and that was one of his ways of throwing it back into another person's face.

Ferro Lad... so, he seems generally nice in this episode, a bit on the social awkward side, and prefers to stay out of arguments that don’t necessarily involve him. But he keeps his face covered to hide whatever is underneath it, saying people don't want to see what's underneath. We can easily figure this means that he has been disfigured somehow, but whether or not he himself is conscious on it as well is another matter.

Which reminds me of Deadpool, who is self-conscious in his movie and that serves as the motivation to find Axe – oh I'm sorry, FRANCIS.

But let's talk some trivia about his comic book origins. Originally, Jim Shooter, a white guy, who worked on LoSH comics, wanted to make him black. However, as writing the character took place during the 60s, DC shot down the idea, saying they would lose distribution in the South. Whitewashing him in the final product.

So, good on Jim for trying with good intentions, bad on DC for tearing it down.

As for where that goes as a consequence overall in most media for LoSH, we'll discuss it in the future.

But... that now begs the question... have other adaptations tackled this race-change? In the cartoon, we can see the skin around his eyes as well as his hands, which are light. So, it’s probably unlikely.

Given Jim Shooter's original idea, I would totally be down for seeing a POC version of Ferro Lad.

But I only found out Ferro Lad's backstory thanks to a friend in the last year, so it's might not well known, and the people working on the show might not have known at the time. And I've stated this before, and I'll say it again, the show originally had Triplicate Girl with darker skin, and given that they made her lighter in the final product was executive meddling, so who knows?

Speaking of Triplicate Girl, this episode once again gives us a lot of character development with her. She seems to be the medic of the group, or at least seems to have sufficient knowledge to give medical treatment. And that's a pretty interesting idea in the show. I personally would love to see more superheroes with more real-world skills. Most of the time.

But she is shown around Bouncy for the majority of the show. But she has her own individuality, as she has more confidence than him, and reassures him that there was no mistake with the votes.

And now, our lovable Bouncy. This is episode gives him A LOT of development, as we watch him assess the situation and take control, making the best decisions on how to treat the situation. And accidentally becomes the new leader during the polls. Something he also has a hard time believing.

Okay, so he had to try multiple times to get into the Legion, and even when he’s in, he finds people questioning his abilities. So now, all of the sudden, he has been elevated to LEADER. That’s a definitely a big shift.

This does look like a good thing (especially since most of the legion think their worst enemies are behind bars based on what Lightning Lad said), and back when I first watched this show, I thought it was the best outcome. But now I can’t help but wonder, what are the qualifications?

Because as much as Bouncing Boy is a good person and does have skills and can assess a situation, we do have to acknowledge that if he doesn't meet the qualifications, he really shouldn't be in the position. Good intentions don't automatically mean good results in the long run. I think the next episode looks into this a bit more but keep it in mind.

I never thought I would criticize the show on that aspect when I was younger, but given the 2016 election results and where that has led, can you blame me for being concerned with this now?

And now, the founders.

So this is Cosmic Boy's first major off screen appearance. And the show quickly show he's Lightning Lad's foil. He does take his duties seriously but does leave the team for a time to try establishing themselves to others, without contacting anyone. Diplomacy seems like a more reasonable reason than just because you're going through the ego-emo phase, but still.

Does seem to like Saturn Girl, but unlike Lightning Lad, seems to be more overprotective, where he won't have her do anything. Something similar to Timber Wolf in the degree of unintentional misogyny. Something she calls him out on. And like Lightning Lad, doesn't back down from a challenge. But there doesn't seem to be any malice/anger on his part, unlike Lightning Lad.

Saturn Girl also gets developed as well. But it is in terms of her relationship between the two boys, in a love-triangle sort of way unfortunately. She reassures Lightning Lad that she would be with him regardless of what happens, but as soon as Cosmic Boy shows up, she goes to him. And when Lightning Lad is getting ready to go outside, she chooses to stay to serve as communication. But she makes her own decision on going to the shelter. And later, she lets Lightning Lad go to his parents without intervening or apologizing. She practices agency in these relationships, and makes it clear no one owns her and she is capable of doing things, which I really like to see.

And now our favorite Trash Child.

Lightning Lad is confronted with a threat to his home, so he takes this mission far more seriously than most other missions we have seen so far. He is going out of his way for all efforts to protect Winath. And it is understandable why. As for his jerk-and-pride personality issues, he seems to be in better control, except he seems to have focused most of it on Cosmic Boy. However, it does pop up in the tone of his voice when Saturn Girl stays behind. And has trouble trusting new people. But he seems fast to warm up to Ferro Lad.

But he doesn’t demand any apologies from Saturn Girl for siding with Cosmic Boy, showing he truly respects her.

When Bouncy becomes the new elected leader, he doesn't hold anything against him. Instead, he is supportive. We wouldn't have gotten that with our Lightning Lad in the first episode.

And can I just say the quiet moments in this episode really delivered? Both the moment when he goes to his room and when he goes to his parents show his vulnerable side.

But before I wrap up this episode, I just want to thank everyone who has put up with me taking so long to resume these reviews.

Hopefully the next one won’t take as long to get out, but... we’ll see.
