Amoureuses

In which Mina meets the pretty girl in Piccadilly as a pretty girl at the party. Arthur invited both Harkers, and Mina would swear Jonathan was on her arm a moment ago...
(Watch out for those dreamscapes, Mina. They can pop up anywhere. Just as undead Parisian party queens can.)
A little something from the Ko-Fi. Swing by if you want to donate a buck or get some art of your own!

Nous ne faisons que nous échapper les uns aux autres, et même si nous ne nous mentons pas à dessein, nous sommes les uns pour les autres des énigmes, des secrets, des blessures inavouables, de vastes territoires de silence.

By the way the ending of Sinners reminded me why Dracula movies and shows feel so uncathartic, exactly zero of them have little Quincey at the end
That is sadly another symptomp of adaptations desperately trying to make the Count the only center piece of the narrative while making both the "hero" of the story as they keep the "iconic" moments of him giving living nightmares to everyone around him.
Don't get me wrong those are absolutely possible to make, but by making Dracula the all end of the narrative it feels that nothing happened. Not showing little Quincey at the end it's a way to discredit all of the efforts that the crew of light did to kill him, to discredit Mina and Jonathan's romance since in the eyes of these misogynistic adaptations a kid is a proof of "ownership" from a man to woman, and I'm sure almost everyone knows by now how these adaptations treat Mina.
Imagine the absolute disaster that could have happened if Sinners was not focused on the black protagonists and their themes and survivals within the narrative, if the director had went "You know who *actually* is the most sympathetic person out of all in this movie? The white vampire who wants to use and kill black and brown people to his own benefit in order to recreate his own fucked up fantasy of a white community, him right there is the actual protagonist, let him use Sammie." Or worse if Smoke and Stack were written to be horrible people to make the white vampire look good in comparison, or that Sammie suddenly decided to go along with Remmick's plans because of that bullshit excuse of "sharing" stories.
That is what happens with Dracula adaptations, and we are not talking about the racist and xenophobic subtext that is Dracula's character. It's the notion of grabbing the villain who has been constantly attacking the protagonists from a position of power, and telling the audience that it's him who is the tortured one, that whatever tragic backstory he has justifies the absolute atrocities he is commiting in the present.
What Sinners did right it's exactly what Dracula the novel did right, they show that there is indeed a tomorrow for the victims after killing the vampire, that when the vampire dies there is still another day to live. Little Quincey Harker is the proof of Mina and Jonathan's happy ending after suffering at the hands of Count Dracula; Sammie Moore not only growing old but becoming a famous blues musician is the happy ending for both Stack and Mary, plus Smoke and Annie after suffering at the hands of Remmick.
The knowledge that the future generations won't have to live in fear of this very monster lurking in the night for the next victim, because in both narratives the nightmares are real. It's a conclusion, the mention of how these people live on with the weight of that enormous tragedy on their shoulder while still looking to the horizon for a better tomorrow.
Yes, it happened and it was horrifying, but even when Stack and Mary remember the last time they saw the sun or Mina and Jonathan think of the castle, everything reassures that the fight is over. The catharsis of the narrative after killing the vampire continues until the actual ending is told, whenever it's in the form of a little kid listening to an almost impossible travel, or an old musician singing for his family.
#Sinners really stuck their guns with their vampire villain and I really love it#Now I think it's truly important to show the after of the narrative what happens after the vampire#Whenever it's positive like Sinners or Dracula#Or utterly despotent like Carmilla or La Morte Amoureuse#sinners#sinners 2025#sammie moore#dracula#quincey harker

hilda furacão x clarimonde (la morte amoureuse) parallelism
After stirring society by leaving her groom at the alter and going directly to a prostitution house, a young model becomes the city's most famous harlot, known as "Hilda the Hurricane", in the 50's Brazil. She could do fine if it wasn't for Malthus, a young novice said to be a saint, for whom she falls in love. However, the boy is kept under the strict, severe doctrine of Father Nelson, a conservative priest intolerant even to every minor sin. – Hilda Furacão (1998)
Romuald, a devout young man who is being ordained when he sees a woman, Clarimonde, and falls immediately in love with her. Later, he finds out that she is a notorious courtesan and a vampire. He's conflicted between his devotion to his lover and the advices of the Abbé who raised him to get rid of her. – Clarimonde or La Morte Amoureuse (1836), by Théophile Gautier

Do you think that Carmilla would be all moody teenager "Ugh! OLD people" if she meets other literary vampires? Like Dracula, Clarimonde, Varney, and the like.
Clarimonde she might be cool with (apart from her taste in romance, ugh) but the rest of the classic lit vampires would all be side-eyed to a degree, and not just due to age. Dracula is a gross harem hunter, Varney is laughable, Ruthven is a wannabe Devil archetype serial killer (as opposed to her superior romantic serial killing 💕). There just isn’t a great pool of peers for her 😔
#which is partially on her for just eating her way through everyone but Laura#but that’s neither here nor there#carmilla#dracula#lord ruthven#varney the vampire#clarimonde#the vampyre#La morte amoureuse
