so i finished my sketchbook and started a new one. Except it isn't technically a sketchbook and is actually a herbarium so it has a little box thing with the common & scientific name, date, location, and notes so i went full science for some reason???
all these notes are written like. semi-diagetically as if someone actually stumbled upon the actual genuine monster-species of Ithacan Naga(s) and took notes.
AND the scientific name thing led me to a small rabbit hole of the full scientific classification/taxonomy for them. And i have no idea if the taxonomy is correct. at all. read that if you want.
anyway, notes and then some if you can't read my handwriting ->
Common Name: (Ithacan) Naga Scientific Name: Plumae ithacae Location Found: Ithaca/Kephalonia & the surrounding seas/underwater cliffs -> Eggs are laid & Juveniles mainly live on land (both in caves); juveniles start mainly living in the water when most of their marine/sea feathers grow in. Mature nagas live both in caves in the sea and land; ideally caves connecting into the sea Memorable Notes: > Royal/Lead lineage is god touched -> Has flight feathers and wings! > Social/Pack Species > Feather patterns & colors vary (liken to shrikes, owls, and other bird species found on Ithaca/Kephalonia) > Species does brumate, despite being aquatic > Omnivorous > Some have siren-like powers and/or instruments? (related to sirens [both avian and marine] likely)?
> They do have hair -> No facial/body hair though?
> Upper-inside of their arms + Stomach has no feathers or scales (vulnerable?). Most feathers on their upper human half. > Ear(hole)s are covered with feathers. > Spines on their back start and end in their feathers; feathers line the sides of their spines > Collection of feathers at the end of their tails -> fan out like bird's tailfeathers -> Vestigial trait? (Used in the flight-able leading-lineage but otherwise the shape leads it to drag underwater). > Gills & Back spine-webbed fins (???)
> Scales are iridescent, though typically a base of a color from the green-blue spectrum (color shown is usually/the average color). > Tan-ish(?) underside scales. > Underside is usually angled down; showing underside/stomach is a sign of trust.
> Shed/Grows at an exponentially decreasing rate -> No limit in size growth (based on prey population)?
> Webbed & Clawed hands > Two main fangs (don't fold) > Other surrounding smaller needle like teeth > No middle teeth on the bottom jaw > Bottom jaw is 2-part -> Stretchy ligament in the middle > Venomous (Spectrum of intensely harmful to lethal) > Snake-like tongue
> Slit eyes > No eyelids? (though can still narrow eyes and such) > Has brille
> 2 Hearts (One human, other snake/aquatic for taking oxygen from gills) > 2 Lungs (one human, other for mainly aquatic) > 2 Stomachs (First melts food into more liquid like than specifically mush, second is the main stomach) > Hermaphrodite species > Lays Eggs
> Species makes and uses tools 👍
#Ithacan Naga AU#Odysseus#Epic the Musical#epic odysseus#siren#my art#ari's art#fuck ai#yeah so. in my head. apparently. Monsters are classified as in naturally and intrinsically man-eating/killing as well of freaks of nature.#and more often than not god-associated/touched/fucked around with#and then there's if they're ONLY man-eating. Only carnivorous. or omnivorous. NO herbivore monsters#and then sirens specifically originated from a (humanoid? mayhaps. since sirens are the nymphs/women cursed by Demeter for losing Persphone#magically-singing species. and they split into avians and aquatic although both live near the sea. and they're both omnivorous#and ithacan nagas soooooorrrrrta split from them. they're related. somehow. Maybe hermes/athena intervened with shennengains and that's how#they got nagas.#either hermes got with one of the sirens and created this world's autolycus - where he has actual wings but the others of this species don'#or there was this one or a group of sirens (mayhaps specifcally male with the headcanon that the siren species is matriarchal & kills male#sirens at a certain point in their life) that did something clever/tricky and left the other sirens; gained the attention of athena/hermes#which led to the eventual evolution/development of Ithacan nagas (athena/hermes may or may not would've been inspired by gorgons/the#original Hindu nagas)#whoop. anyway
