This moment will always be IT for me. This scene was probably more significant for me than the table scene, and that says a lot because that scene was extremely significant! I remember when i first saw this scene and was genuinely so taken back by the editing, the song, the expressions. And the fact that it's STILL on my mind almost a year later and i end up finding something new about it every time??
Then people want to pretend that this moment was strictly platonic and that Syd only equaled the restaurant... I knew in this moment that they were showing us Carmy realized how much he loved Syd and that she meant so much more to him. She's his peace. She was not a product of his trauma through his childhood and family. He was uncertain about Claire, but certain about Syd. I don't care. I am not budging.
I even tried to one time just so i could stop talking about sydcarmy to my friend who wants them to only be platonic. But oh well! The editors and Mr. Storer shouldn't have shown me this scene!

I was also taken aback when I watched this, hearing "These words, you will be mine" along with "what are you doing here I guess." My heart skipped a beat because I was absolutely sure Carmy realized he loved Sydney.
I had to go back a few times too because I was genuinely surprised.

This scene came like a punch (a good one, like a sudden shift in reality) because the whole Claire narrative made me think Carmy was likely not fall for Syd for a while. And then this scene happen and it was so unexpected, I had to chill for screaming “I fucking knew it” (Richies impersonation).
That said, I was also so confused about how little Carmy wanted to internalize what happened. In his next scene with Syd, we have a moment when he looks away, kind of panicking while trying to look at her. He definitely was trying to avoid thinking about what happened, maybe it wax to much for that day.
Then there is the table scene when he stars talking to her about how great Claire is but ends the scene feeling mesmerized by Syd and their connection. The whole thing is such hot and cold it made me wonder what kind of stupid excuse he is telling himself for what is happening.
And then he breaks up with Claire. As emotionally obtuse as Carny is, he cannot be obtuse enough not to understand that Syd makes him feel good in places Claire doesn't. He knows he wants to spend time with Syd, look at her, and delight in her presence. He knows he trust her and cares for him more than anything. The sealing point for me is when Carmy calls for Syd while stuck in the walk in. If he wanted Claire there, he could have ask for her, he just saw her.
If they hadn't broken up that day, I would have problems with Carmy’s character, feeling he could go back to sleep with Claire after all that happened. He has to know that what he feels for Syd is not something you should look outside of your partner.
That is something I am curious about in S3. If he gets back to Claire, it will be while trying to oppress what he feels for Syd or acknowledging it sometimes and avoiding it at others. It all reads like a lot of emotional cheating, and at some point, Carmy’s lack of emotional intelligence will not be cut as an excuse. He will be the one actively and knowledgeablely wasting Claire’s time. He will be wasting every ones time. And I will feel the need to slap him.
