In further news of websites becoming worse, amazon product reviews are becoming seriously useless because so many of them are very obviously AI generated. Whenever I scroll down to read customer reviews these days, the top one is always this perfectly polished text full of classic advertising buzzwords, exact product name, incredibly corporate speech, paragraphs all the same bite sized length, the last one beginning with a little "overall" summary. Every fucking time.
Like, maybe I can't say NOBODY writes like that, but VERY FEW PEOPLE do! It's so clearly an abundance of AI.
And these are verified purchases! I was browsing for a cheap rust remover just now and found one account that had left a total of 20 reviews, all on the same day, all in full corporate advertising style, all formatted with emojis as bullet points, all rated 5 stars, all verified purchases. There's no way a human person sat down to write these.
The weird thing is that these purchases do all fit together as something one person might buy. A mattress, a mattress topper, two different neck gaiters, an aroma diffuser, essential oil, anti rust spray, oil for a bike chain... some of them fit together so well that it makes sense that this would be a real person! But the reviews just CAN'T be.
Is this a new tactic of making fake accounts look real through a plausible purchase history? Or is this a real person who makes normal purchases but gets reimbursed for reviews? Did this person get a budget to buy what they wanted in exchange for reviewing everything? What's going on here, I just don't understand!
