like the initial deal with grian's s6 shadow, jigsaw, was that he was such a bastard that grian would summon him just to kick the shit out of him (and, yknow, get duped gear) but also hid that motivation from the other hermits until jigsaw developed a power and became A Whole New Kind Of Problem

..........anyway at some point WAY later it got discussed that the death threshold for shadows to develop an ability is, like, 100 deaths
