No capes/actors AU came to me via a dream and I have since been obsessing over it,,
I have so many ideas over it but my fav is currently that the Jasons are brothers because of the quick switch between seasons/robins and how they couldn’t use the same actor for older Jason so they just asked his older brother to be Red Hood Jason, Little Jason is way younger because they were trying to emphasize how small street kid Jason was

Arthur didn’t involve himself in Dutch’s relationships. He stayed polite to whatever young woman he had hanging off his arm at the time, but that was about it. He’d seen too many girls come and go- usually in floods of tears at being dismissed by the man that had seduced and charmed them into loving him. Just working his way through shiny new plaything to plaything, hiding his unending sorrow for Annabelle under the skirt of some new girl.
Unfortunately you were no different.
In your defence, he supposed, you had lasted far longer than the rest. The only real exception to that being the famed Annabelle herself. But as was almost inevitable, your time in the honeymoon phase was slowly crumbling down around you.
Arthur did wonder if it was simply because of the current stress levels in camp. They had all been on the run for longer than he cared to try and count, but after the mess in Blackwater they had reached new heights of being hunted. It had never been this bad. Nothing had ever gone this wrong. Because before everything had gone to complete shit, he’d actually seemed quite taken with you. In truth Arthur actually had begun to consider the idea that Dutch really did love you. Had finally been able to move on from the weight on his heart of his dead lover.
But no.
Arthur was observing the same pattern as always, it had just taken far longer with you. And that just seemed to make it all the more cruel.
He barely even looked at you most days now. Barely uttered a few words in return to any question you asked.
And the arguing was growing ever more fierce. It was practically everyday.
Arthur didn’t like it. Didn’t like the way Dutch treated you. Didn’t like the way Dutch was treating anyone lately. But you in particular had never been anything but nice to him, kind. Sweet. Incredibly naive but sweet. To Arthur too. Some of the girls Dutch had strung along had been vile, rude and entitled and stuck up. But you? You were a genuinely nice person it seemed. And maybe that was your greatest flaw, for someone like that did not belong with Dutch Van Der Linde.
In fact Arthur had come to like you from a distance. The times he had spoken to you you had been interesting, intelligent. Far cleverer than him and he had always liked that in a woman if he was honest.
But still you clung to Dutch. Though your patience with him of late seemed to finally be wearing thin.
Dutch had never really been one to be ashamed or afraid of airing his dirty laundry within the gang. Whether that be packing on the PDA in camp in a way that often made Arthur want to vomit up his breakfast, or the even more puke inducing sounds of the two of you making up all night long. So arguing was no exception to that either.
And today was no different.
“ you barely even look at me! I’m right here! I always have been, I’ve always been such a good girl haven’t I? I do as you say. And look at how you repay me! “ Arthur sighed as he dropped a stack of bills into the box, successfully recovering yet another of Strauss’ debts for him. You were both screaming at each other again, the tent flaps pulled down as if that would over any form of soundproofing. It was the camp's regular ambience now it seemed.
He did feel sorry for you, he really did. You’d left everything you had for Dutch. Some beautiful, intelligent, well spoken girl. Heiress to her daddy’s mining fortune up north, used to the finer things but seeking some adventure. And Dutch had offered you both. Drowned you in jewels and gifts- though unlike the ones you had once owned the ones he gave were not his to give- Shown you off like a shiny new toy on his arm. Expressly informed Miss Grimshaw that you were not to be lifting a finger, that you would not have to earn your keep with chores like the others.
You earned your keep by looking beautiful beside him, by boosting his ego with your constant devotion to him, by letting Dutch use you for his own source of pleasure and by the sounds of things- that Arthur truly had no choice but to overhear- not getting very much back in return.
“ You know I don’t think I’ve ever met a more selfish woman in my life! “ Arthur sighed and sat down on his cot, debating whether or not to make some attempt to get the sleep he had been planning the entire long journey back to Clemens Point. But his tent was but a stone's throw from Dutch’s.
“ I have needs too Dutch Van Der Linde!” Everyone else in camp didn’t seem to mind it though, most of them preparing to settle in for the night. Whether that be passing out on their bedrolls or drinking by the fire. But Arthur wasn’t sure he could put up with another moment of the damn yelling.
“ oh? You have needs? “ Dutch’s voice was condescending. Mocking “ I give you everything! You are acting like a spoiled child”
“ a child? A child!? “ Arthur stood back up again, deciding he’d fare better trying to sleep on the damn ground rather than next to the likes of you and Dutch. So he headed out towards the edge of camp, hiding himself in the woods by the water. He slumped down against a tree with a heavy sigh and wished he’d thought to pick up a bottle of beer on the way.
But it was no matter. He was far enough away that he couldn’t hear the fighting anymore, but close enough that if he was needed anyone calling his name would be heard.
He looked out across the water, enjoying his rare moment of peace. It was a clear night and a full moon, the reflection bouncing off the water in the most beautiful way. He pulled out his journal and started to sketch it, wishing he could capture its beauty better.
‘ Dutch and the girl were arguing again. Got out of earshot for a bit to try catch some sleep. Thought the water and the moon looked mighty pretty ‘
He scrawled underneath when he was done, tucking it back into the satchel discarded at his side. Javier's guitar had silenced back in camp now and he figured everyone had gone off to bed. But he was quite content there by the water, so dropped his hat over his face and settled in to try and catch a few hours himself.
He was just dozing off when he heard the sound of boots marching quickly through the undergrowth, snapping twigs as they went. And then the soft sound of someone mumbling to themselves. He silently hoped whoever it was would keep well away from him. But the boots grew nearer and came to a halt not so far away. The crackle of a match being lit and a heavy sigh.
“ thinks he can talk to me like that? Bastard. Bastard he is. I’m a lady I deserve better than. Than that “
You.
He cleared his throat lightly to inform you that he was there, but unfortunately still seemed to startle you.
“ Christ! Gave me a damn heart attack Arthur “ he placed his hat down with his satchel with a sigh and looked up at you. In the light of the moon reflecting off the water he could see your cheeks were tear stained, the glow of the end of your cigarette illuminating your face further and showing your makeup in streaks.
He couldn’t lie that it made his heart ache for you. He didn’t particularly have any solid feelings for you, but he did feel sorry for you. It was hard not to feel sorry for the woman seduced by Dutch.
And you truly were a cut above the rest in his opinion. Beautiful as the early morning sun and, when you weren’t screaming at Dutch, as kind and warm as it too. But maybe that was fitting. Because much like the sun you could bask people in warmth, but burn them too. Beautiful and bright but scalding and he found he couldn’t look at you for too long, no matter how many times he wanted too. Simply blinding his eyes with your flaming beauty and having to turn away.
But maybe he was just getting caught up in his metaphors.
“ shouldn’t be out this far from camp “ you simply shrugged, taking another drag of your cigarette “ ain’t no one nice lingerin’ in woods at night miss” even if no Lemoyne raiders were sneaking around the trees, there were plenty of species of wildlife that would happily do a number on you. Chew off a leg or bite you with poison fangs. You didn’t know how to take care of yourself. You couldn’t handle a gun, didn’t have a single survival instinct in you.
Dutch had quite made sure of that, he’d heard you ask once or twice. And had been denied. Charming you with some string of words about how you were far too delicate to be handling a gun. To leave it for the men.
“ you’re lingering in the woods aren’t you Mr Morgan? “ he chuckled and shrugged.
“ and I ain’t that nice. Point proven lady “
“ not like Dutch would care if someone took me anyway. He’d probably be thankful “ your voice was hoarse from the shouting and he couldn’t tell if you were going to cry again or not. You took a long drag of your cigarette before seeming to suddenly remember something, dipping your hand into the waistband of your skirt and pulling out a pack “ sorry my manners. Want one? “ he took one with a nod of thanks “ can I sit? “
You sat down carefully beside him then with a long sigh, tucking your legs beneath you, and leant forward so he could light the cigarette between his lips with the end of yours.
“ thanks “ you both sat quietly for a short while. Smoking and watching the ripples in the water. He didn’t mind it actually, as much as he had been slightly annoyed at you disturbing his attempt to sleep. You were decent company.
You rarely strayed from Dutch’s side, but on the odd occasion you had and Arthur had stumbled upon you having a moment to yourself at the edge of camp it had been quite nice. So he didn’t mind sitting there with you, company. For you both.
“ I think you’re nice. By the way “ you said to break the silence, refrenching his previous comment of bad men lingering in the woods.
“ No offense to you Miss, but you’re in love with old Dutch. I don’t think you’re particularly qualified to be sayin’ whether folk is nice or not “ he said it teasingly in some hopes of making you smile. And it did. A little.
“ maybe not “ he watched you bring your cigarette to your lips again, glancing at your hands. Nails perfectly trimmed and not a single speck of dirt or sign of a scar. Hands that had never had to lift a finger. Ever. It was an interesting contrast to his own. Calloused and scarred and bruised “ but Dutch he… he…Can I ask you something? “
“ Sure “ he said and flicked his cigarette away.
“ Do you think I’m beautiful Arthur? “ you asked meekly. Your face was sad. Lingering innocence yet to be wiped away by life somehow, the kind that only remained because you had lived a life so sheltered. Even with Dutch you were as sheltered as could be “ and don’t lie. Please “
“ I think you’re beautiful, sure “ you turned back to the water again, tossing your own cigarette before promptly lighting another.
“ Dutch doesn’t. Not anymore. Barely even looks at me “ Arthur ran a hand over his face, not entirely sure what he was supposed to say to you in the situation. At all “ I know I know I don’t expect you to agree. You two you’re…you’re like two peas in a pod aren’t you? “ you said with a small laugh, but it held no humour. You took a long drag of your cigarette.
“ me and Dutch it’s… we go back a long way. But… I will agree the way he’s been treatin’ you. Ain't nice. Not when you done nothin’ but be loyal to him for so long “ you turned back to him again and gave a small smile. It was like a wave of relief had washed right over you.
Someone was finally listening.
“ I think he’s got his eyes on Mary-Beth “ you mumbled, red stained lips wrapping around your cigarette again. Much like how he had found himself admiring your hands he now found himself admiring your lips. Soft and plump and stained red in the way they often were.
He blamed it on his fatigue.
“ he’d be a fool to give you up. You’re kind, loyal, hell you might jus’ be the most beautiful woman I know. He’s in a weird place right now. He’ll snap outta it, be back to readin’ you Evelyn Miller in no time. You’ll see “ maybe the last part wasn’t entirely true. But the first part was. And you seemed to bask in his compliments. He wondered when the last time Dutch had said something nice to you had actually been.
“ Thank you “ you looked as though you might cry again. And he really hoped you wouldn’t. He didn’t like to see you cry. And he really wouldn’t know what to say to you then. Once again you turned your attention back to the water and gave a small sigh “ maybe I chose the wrong outlaw “ you said with a small laugh “ always have thought you were quite handsome “
He nearly choked on his own saliva, clearing his throat in hopes to pass it out smoothly. He didn’t know if it had worked.
“ Really? “
“ Hmm “ you mused, tilting your head inquisitively to the side “ but you were oh so hung up on that Mary girl when I found Dutch”
“ Yeah well. Mary she’s- that’s all done with now “ maybe Mary was the reason he seemed to sympathise with you so. Because he too had had a broken heart. Though he was sure his was not as brutal as yours.
“ Guess we both have bad taste don’t we Mr Morgan “ he chuckled and nodded.
“ That we do miss. That we do “ he placed a gentle hand to your shoulder and squeezed in some form of comfort “ don’t worry bout Dutch though. Really. He’ll come to his senses and if…if he don’t then. Any man would be lucky to have ya “ you sniffled and he figured you’d started crying again “ I didn’t mean to upset- “
“ No. No I’m fine. It’s just…you mean it all don’t you? All these kind words? “ he shrugged and then nodded.
“ Sure I do. You’re a beautiful woman. Inside an out “ something seemed to flash across your face, a million and one things whirring away behind your eyes. He’d never been that good at reading people, never one for knowing what people were thinking. And the look on your face was the most confusing he’d ever seen.
The next part happened far too quickly for him to process it. Maybe because he was tired, maybe because he truly hadn’t even slightly suspected you to do it. You flicked away the butt of your cigarette and leaned forward, one hand to his leg and the other to his neck. And kissed him.
He was taken aback and you pulled away before he could make any attempt to figure out what you’d just done.
“ Sorry “ you sighed in slight annoyance, seemingly at yourself, sitting back beside him again. Like it was no big deal. Just something that had happened and had no real consequence “ shit- sorry “ Arthur scratched the back of his neck awkwardly and shrugged with a small laugh. Attempting to play it as cool as you clearly were.
Maybe he’d finally cracked and entered some weird fatigue induced psychosis, hallucinations and hearing voices. And kissing Dutch’s woman.
“ S’okay. No harm done “ he was bewildered. Trying to process the last 30 seconds and coming up completely blank.
“ Just the way you talk about me I- Lord forgive me “ he was certain he must have looked half dense. Still completely confused at what on earth was happening with you. And maybe, just maybe, a tiny bit flustered at having a woman like you kiss him. Even if you were begging the Lord for forgiveness right after it “ no one’s spoken to me like that in a long time and…and I wish they had. I want to be told I’m beautiful again. I want to be kissed. I want I want…I want a lot of things “
Maybe Arthur was a stupid, idiotic fool. Maybe too many gunshot wounds and bumps to the head had finally caught up to him. Maybe he too wanted to act on his ever growing annoyance with how Dutch was behaving. But he found himself reaching out, fingers tucking under your chin to turn your face to look at him. Your eyes were so beautiful up close. Practically sparkling in the moonlight.
Oh he was such a fool.
“ could’a jus’ asked “ a small smile tugged at your lips and you laughed a little.
“ Yeah. Of course. Because you’d have said yes Arthur? “ he shrugged. He didn’t know if he would’ve actually. But now the thought was in his head “ alright “ you whispered and shuffled a little closer to him “ indulge me “
His thumb was absentmindedly brushing over your jaw, looking at you in the light of the moon and wondering how on earth Dutch wasn’t constantly begging for your attention. If he had a woman like you constantly hanging off his every word he wouldn’t know how to act. Would be like a mangy dog trailing around after you for food.
“ I might’ve “ you gave a roll of your eyes but you were smiling still, a beautiful, tempting smile.
You were a temptress. A siren. Luring him in with your beauty to do something terrible. And you were vulnerable. Sad and seeking appreciation. And he was truly debating it.
“ Well…“ you started quietly, looking up at him through your long lashes in a way that made his chest go tight “ there is… still time for you to say yes “
“ we ain’t gonna tell no one bout this y’hear? This it’s… it’s jus’ between me and you. Okay? “ your eyebrows furrowed for a second looking up at him intently, as if trying to figure out if he was joking or not. If he was serious. He wasn’t entirely sure himself, needed you to agree or disagree to put the thought to rest.  His thumb continued to brush along your jaw tenderly and your eyes fell closed for a moment.
How long had it been since someone had touched you with such care? That something as simple as that seemed to mean so much to you.
“ I understand “ you whispered, eyes flickering down to his lips again. He pulled you in close, barely an inch between your lips and then spoke again “ you’ll give me what I want? Don’t treat me like him “
“ Anythin’ ya want. You got it. I’ll give ya what you deserve “ you let a shuddering breath escape and gave a small nod before closing the gap between you both again.
He hadn’t kissed anyone in a while, but he sure found his footing quickly. You kissed him like he was your source of air, climbing your way into his lap and slipping your hands into his hair. You tasted of cigarette smoke and something almost sweet. Whatever it was, it was an intoxicating mix. You were like a siren singing your call in his ear, drawing him in and taking him for your own. The weight of you in his lap was almost familiar, welcoming. Just… nice.
He had almost forgotten just how fun it was to kiss a woman. How so many men seemed to shun it as boring, pointless- Dutch obviously included. But Arthur had always loved it. Had spent many a night as a youngster sneaking his way into Mary’s room just to kiss her. To spend hours kissing and talking and kissing some more.
Kissing you was something else. Addictive. Intoxicating.
Eventually he had to pull away, his lungs screaming at him for air. Your hands slipped out from his hair and down to grasp at the collar of his shirt, resting your forehead on his.
“ Anything I want you say? “ you asked quietly, breathless.
“ Anythin’ “ you smiled and lifted your head, a quiet determination settling over you. Your lipstick had smeared and he wondered how much of it was now on his own face.
“ okay… undress me then “ you softly commanded, shifting slightly in his lap “ please. Dutch never- he makes me do it myself, barely even looks I- Please “
He almost laughed to himself about now he immediately thought getting you naked was entirely too risky. As if the entire situation alone wasn’t risky anyway. But he didn’t want to think too hard about that, instead simply channelled his recent annoyance towards Dutch into his actions. Tried to tell himself he was doing a good thing, taking care of you.
You watched his face carefully as he gently untucked your shirt from where it was tucked into your skirt, some silky soft thing that probably cost more than everything he owned in his clothing trunk put together. He undid every pearl button slowly, eyes darting up to your face as he did. Your chest was heaving in long, heavy breaths. You were nervous. Or excited. He couldn’t tell which.
You shivered lightly when he pushed it from your shoulders, now only the soft cotton of your chemise between his hands and your chest. Your nipples had hardened, from the slight night chill or lust he couldn’t say. But he found himself unable to resist the sight, leaning forward and capturing one between his lips through the cotton. You gasped softly, a sound so beautiful it made him groan. You sounded delicate. Innocent. You’d never made such sounds when he’d overheard you with Dutch. In fact a majority of the time you almost sounded in pain.
But this sound wasn’t that. This sound was beautiful. And he wanted to hear more. One hand pushed at your back to bring you closer, the other palmed at your neglected breast in hopes you’d make the sound again. And you did. Gentle, soft gasps as his tongue dampened the material of your chemise, teeth tugging at you gently through the material. Your hand found his hair again, raking your fingers through it and arching your back into his touch.
He couldn’t imagine why Dutch had never wanted to do such a thing. How could he not want to hear you make those pretty pretty sounds? How could he not want to feel you writhing in his lap and yearning to be touched. Maybe Dutch was more of a fool than he had originally thought.
“ Need you to touch me- properly I- take this off “ your sentence was choppy, like you weren’t focussed enough to truly articulate the words you wanted to say. But he understood, pulling your chemise over your head and dropping it to land with your shirt.
He took a moment just to look at you, not even entirely because he knew you’d want him to. Just because he wanted to. He’d be a liar if he said he hadn’t wondered what was hiding under your expensive clothes once or twice. How could he not when he had to try sleep through the sounds of you and Dutch of a night.
“ God damn “ he said softly, hands soothing over your waist as you basked in his admiring stare, taking in the feeling of finally being looked at. Properly.
“ like what you see Mr Morgan “ you asked, voice sultry and low in a way that made his cock twitch in his pants.
“ Dutch is a damn fool “ is all he could say, leaning forward to kiss you again, his hands moving to grab at your chest. You moaned into the kiss as he squeezed and massaged your breasts with his large hands, seizing the opportunity to dip his tongue into the warmth of your mouth. Your fingers in his hair, twisting strands around your fingers and tugging lightly. He felt like he was on cloud nine. Certain he’d somehow taken a stumble through the veil and ended up at heaven's gates.
He wasn’t a particularly religious man, but the way he was prepared to worship and praise you could truly be considered blasphemous.
He couldn’t resist the temptation of getting his mouth on you again much longer, dragging his lips from yours and wrapping them around a pebbled nipple instead. You rolled your hips against him, those beautiful soft moans still falling past your lips. This was what you had wanted from him. To be worshipped. To be looked at as the beautiful temptress of a woman you were. And not merely glanced at and then used like some two dollar whore in a saloon.
He wanted to nip at your skin, bite and soothe it with his tongue. But he knew he couldn’t. Couldn’t risk Dutch seeing it if he felt the need to stop ignoring you for a short while for his own needs. But oh how he wanted to. To mark up your smooth skin with reminders that you were desired. That you could look at as they faded and be reminded that you were wanted.
“ I need more “ you whispered “ Arthur please. Give me more “ another roll of your hips followed by a small whimper told him enough.
“ I know I got ya “ he murmured against your skin, pressing kisses up your sternum and your neck. Nose brushing at the underside of your jaw and working his way back to your lips again “ stand up. Lemme get you out of these damn clothes “ he caught the smile on your face as you stood up, he stayed seated and ran his hands over the fabric covering your hips. Something seemed to blaze in your eyes as you looked down on him. He realised it was most probably you that was usually being leered down on, but not now.
Not with him. Not with Arthur. Arthur looked up at you like the goddess you were, looked up at you with what he knew was a silent pleading in his eyes. Dutch would never ask he knew it. Dutch took. Stole. Used. Arthur didn’t. Wouldn’t.
“ I like how you look at me “ you said quietly, hand soothing over his hair “ you make me feel beautiful “
“ Cause y’are “ he murmured, hands reaching to the ties of your skirt. He wanted to see more. Wanted to see all of you.
You helped him with the slightly tedious task of getting your skirts and undergarments off, but all so slowly. Taking his time. Making sure he appreciated every single layer of clothing you removed for him, right down to unlacing your boots and holding your leg gently to help you out of them. Until you stood there as naked as the day you were born, illuminated by the moonlight on the water.
“ well ain’t you a sight “
Your skin was so smooth. Soft. Not a single scar that he could see. The skin of a woman who had never had to lift a finger. Had never known the hardships that he had. The only true blemish on your skin was the almost completely faded bruises on your hips. Fingertips. Dutch.
He soothed his hands up your legs, pressing soft kisses to the pillowy flesh of your thighs as he went, and stopped as he reached them.
“ He can be a little rough. It’s how he likes it “ you answered before he could even ask. Arthur too had been known to have his rougher moments. But he could never hurt you. Never mark you in anyway other than that of affection and care.
“ I ain’t like that “
“ I know. That’s why I want you “ he pulled you back down into his lap, his large hands splaying over your hips as he took yet another moment just to look. To admire. To thank whatever stupid damn God may exist for placing such a heavenly body in his presence “ I feel a little like the odd one out here though “ you said with a small smile, tracing a finger down from the open top buttons of his shirt to his pants.
He’d been far too occupied with you to even really notice the fact that he was ridiculously overdressed in comparison.
“ Can’t have that now can we darlin’ “ your smile grew and you made quick work of the buttons on his shirt, pushing it off his shoulders with a gentle sigh. You ran your fingers through the hair on his chest, nails scratching lightly at his skin and peppering lipstick stained kisses as you went. Littering his collarbones, his sternum.
“ much better “ your hands kept roaming and your lips kept kissing. Hands seemingly wanting to touch him all, scratching lightly up his sides and over his waist, his stomach and his ribs. Slowly moving to slide over his shoulders and loop around his neck. You rolled your hips against him again and whined softly. He was so hard it was growing painful as he stayed restrained by his pants. But he wasn’t selfish. Not like Dutch. And he wasn’t about to seek out any form of pleasure himself until he had you seeing the stars you deserved.
“ tell me what y’want “ he murmured, peppering soft kisses across your jaw.
“ touch me “ you sighed blissfully “ please touch me “
His hand slipped down in between your bodies, brushing past the soft curls between your legs and couldn’t contain the groan of a sound that left him when he felt how warm and wet you were.
“ Christ “ he muttered as your head dropped to his shoulder with a shuddering breath “ he ever touch you like this? “ he asked lowly, already knowing the answer. Why would he? He didn’t get anything out of it.
But Arthur did. Oh Arthur did.
“ no “ you whispered “ no never…please. More “ he tested the waters, pressing lightly against your clit and revelling in the squeak of a sound that it caused you to make.
“ or like this? " You shook your head again, breathing shakily as he dragged his finger through the wetness and drew light circles around your entrance.
“ Arthur “ you moaned his name in the most delicious way as he pushed his finger inside, burying it to the knuckle
“ yeah and what about this darlin? “ he again knew the answer. Dutch didn’t care about your pleasure. Didn’t care about wasting time on something as simple as making you whimper and whine for more “ he touch you like this? “
“ no “
“ think ya can take one more for me? “ you nodded again and he withdrew his finger, gathering your slick on his other before pushing them both past the resistance of your entrance “ that’a girl “ he pumped his fingers in and out steadily, curling and probing at your velvety soft walls to test what you liked.
“ This is so… oh god. This isn’t proper at all “ you laughed slightly, melting into a soft moan. Arthur chuckled, lifting your face up so you’d look at him.
“ Ain’t proper at all? It’s damn right filthy darlin” your cheeks were aflame and you closed your eyes for a moment, grinding yourself against his hand “ look at ya. Drippin all over ma fingers like that. Ain’t proper. Not one bit “ you smiled, a cheeky, devious smile that made him lean forward and kiss you again.
You were so wet it was obscene. He couldn’t tell where the sounds of you kissing stopped and the sopping sounds of his fingers began. You continued to grind down against his palm, practically riding his fingers, his whole hand wet and sticky with you.
And he wanted to taste it. To taste you. To flood his mouth with the slick, liquid gold covering his fingers. It was an almost primal desire, like a desperation as strong as needing air. He needed to. He had to.
“ Darlin’ “ he murmured, lifting your head from where it had fallen to his neck again “ gotta let me taste you. You gotta “ the look on your face only made him want it more. Your skin flushed and eyes blown out with nothing but pure lust and desire. He’d never needed anything more. Nothing else mattered, not the painful hardness in his pants, not the realisation that you were very much Dutch’s girl. He didn’t care about any of that. He just needed to be between your thighs.
“ really? No one’s ever- oh god. Yes. Yes. Please Arthur “ he withdrew his fingers making you whimper and quickly grabbed his discarded shirt and lay it down on the ground. Then he kissed you again as he wrapped his arms around your waist, gently turning you to lay back on the shirt. It still couldn’t have been particularly comfortable. But you didn’t seem to mind, tugging at his hair and lifting your hips up against him as he hovered over you.
He took his time moving down. Leaving a long and slow trail of hot, wet, kisses on your skin. You writhed underneath him, whining softly and twisting your hands in his shirt underneath you. He took extra time with your thighs. Kissing up from the inside of your knee and stopping before he could place his mouth where he really wanted to, then repeating with the other.
“ Arthur “ you whined, still squirming around and desperate.
“ I know. I got ya. Gonna make those pretty sounds for me again yeah? "You nodded, pushing yourself up onto your elbows to watch him as his head sank lower, spreading your legs wider to give him full access to the centre of you “ that’s a good girl “ he spread you open with his fingers, in awe of the way you parted for him. Like petals on a flower, dripping with the morning dew.
But you were far more delectable. A forbidden fruit begging to be tasted.
And oh was it pretty. Even in the dark, in nothing but the light of the moon on the water, it was pretty. Begging to be tasted, touched. Admired.
The sound you made as he dragged his tongue from your weeping hole to your clit was like music to his ears. He didn’t know how he managed to not come in his pants just at the sound of it.
You still kept it quiet, but loud enough for him.
His own, deep, guttural moan escaped from his chest as he licked again. Your taste flooding his mouth in a way so so much better than he could’ve imagined.
He ate you like he was starved. Like a savage predator that hadn’t seen meat for days, like a man ready for the gallows enjoying his last meal. His arms wrapped around your thighs, keeping your legs apart for him as you bucked and squirmed against his face. It was visceral. Carnal. You made him feel like his grip on his own composure and control was weaker than ever, that he was holding on to it with nothing but his fingertips.
“ Arthur “ he dipped his tongue into the welcoming warmth of your cunt, his eyes falling closed for a moment as he felt you clench around him, desperate for more. Desperate for him. And he would give you more, would give you anything you asked of him. But not until he made you come first.
He let go of one of your legs and brought his fingers back to their previous position, wanting to feel you again. To be inside of you, as close as he could get. To make you see stars.
The flat of his tongue found your clit again, certain he could feel you pulsing against him. Desperate and full of desire for him. He felt honoured, privileged. That you were so loyal to Dutch, glued to his side. Never even batting an eye at anyone else. And yet you had broken that for him. Had sought him out because you knew he would treat you well.
Your back arched off the ground as he sunk them back into you, slipping in with a welcome ease. His thick fingers pumped into you at a steady pace, his tongue diverting all its attention to your clit. Lapping and sucking and letting you press his face harder against you as you tugged on his hair.
“ don’t stop please dont- Arthur “ he had no intentions of stopping, none at all. In fact he simply honed in on his ministrations, working harder to push you closer and closer to the edge of the orgasm he knew you had been craving for weeks.
“ Not gonna stop darlin. Ain’t stopping until you come for me. Taste so good, so good “ he murmured against you, curling his fingers and hitting a spot that made you gasp and your body shudder “ there we go, right there “
He flicked his tongue over your sensitive bundle of nerves, looking at you as best he could to gauge your reaction. You were pulling a little painfully at his hair, squirming and rolling your hips against his face. He let you do it. Let you be the one using a man for your pleasure, rather than being the one used for once.
Your sounds were sinful. Melodic. He took it all in. Basked in the noises you made for him, the delicious taste of you on his tongue, drunk on you. On your taste. Your smell.
“ Arthur- Arthur please I- “ you babbled, a slightly smug smile working its way onto his face as he watched your prim and proper facade melt away “ don’t stop “
He hummed an assurance that he wouldn’t, your hips bucking against his face as he did. You were so unbelievably wet, dripping out around his fingers and soaking the hair of his beard. He would never have thought it of you. The way you held yourself around camp, so poised and prim. The accent when you spoke that made everyone else around you sound so common. And yet there you were. On your back in the woods, chasing an orgasm being offered to you by an outlaw. Repeating his name like a mantra.
And not even that of the outlaw you were in love with.
“ Arthur-
Only seconds later it happened. You held a hand over your mouth as your orgasm hit you, muffling your choked moans, back arching off the ground and walls clamping down on his fingers as he worked you through it. Tongue still working diligently at your clit until you pushed your hand at his head, squirming away a little.
He almost didn’t want to stop. Could’ve happily stayed there a while longer, but moved back, an obscene wet sound in the late night silence as he withdrew his fingers.
He took his fingers to his mouth, sucking the remnants of your climax onto his tongue. Unable to control himself. You watched him do it, mouth slightly agape and eyes half open with some desperate undeniable look of utter desire. He could almost see the way it made you feel, could see you unable to contain the overwhelming feeling of realising you were desired. Wanted.
“ God. You are unbelievable “ you whispered, pushing yourself up onto your elbows and grabbing at his arm. Your fingers looped around his wrist and tugged his hand towards your own mouth. He shook his head with a chuckle, slightly in awe as you took those same two fingers between your red lips.
Your tongue swirled between his digits, plush lips wrapping around them and sucking. Your eyes locked on his as you did. It made his cock ache. He wanted your lips on him, wanted your tongue swirling around his length and milking him dry. He could imagine it if he thought hard enough. The way you hummed slightly in appreciation as you sucked his fingers clean, sent vibrations straight through his bones. Rattling him to the core. But he would never ask that of you. But the thought was one he would hold onto. It made him shift slightly.
“ you ain’t so prim and proper lady “ he murmured as he withdrew his fingers, a string of saliva connecting his fingertips and your lips “ This ain’t very proper of you miss “ Arthur said with a small smile, teasing “ rollin’ around in the dirt with the likes of me “
“ Oh to hell with being proper if it means I get to feel like this “ you said with a small laugh and he kissed you again for what felt like the millionth time. He wondered if you could taste yourself on his lips, smell the heady delicious smell of you on his beard.
He would’ve been more than happy to leave it at that. No matter how badly he wanted to sheath himself inside you and stay there for eternity. His goal had been your pleasure and he had achieved it.
But as he kissed you your hands began working at the buckle of his gun belt, opening it with a skilled ease that made him pull back.
“ Darlin’ you ain’t gotta do that- “
“ shush “ you pushed at him lightly so you could sit up and went to work on the buttons on his pants next “ I want to. I- Arthur take them off “ he made far quicker work of his own clothes than he had of yours and you leant back on your elbows to watch him.
You looked like a pinup girl. Like something he’d seen drawn come to life. Your eyes seemed hungry as you looked at him, dragging down his body and lingering on his rock hard cock. He was practically throbbing with want, the tip an angry shade of pink and leaking precum slightly embarrassingly “ come here. Please. Back down here “
He did as he was asked, crawling back over your body as you eyed him greedily.
“ We really don’t…I mean, If y’don’t wanna- “ his words stuck in his throat as your fingers wrapped around the length of him with a small sigh.
“ I want you to I just…can I ask one thing? “ he couldn’t get the word yes to escape his mouth, your fingers squeezing him softly in a way that made him see flashes of white in his vision. So he simply nodded “ don’t fuck me. Dutch fucks me, make love to me “ you seemed a little embarrassed at the request. But he didn’t think it was embarrassing. In fact he had had no plans to use you as brutally as Dutch. He was almost a little offended you thought he might.
“ Told you, anythin’ you want. You got it “ you smiled softly and pressed another kiss to his lips before laying back down again. He positioned himself over you, caging your head in between his arms. And it truly was incredibly intimate. He wondered when the last time you had had such intimacy was. If you’d ever received such a thing from Dutch.
He spat on his hand and grabbed a hold of his sensitive cock, stroking himself a couple of times to get himself slick. Not that he really needed to, you were already wetter than he’d ever known a woman to be. But the last thing he wanted was your discomfort. He lined himself up with you, eyes trained on your face as he dragged his weeping tip between your folds. You gasped as he caught your clit, still sensitive and alert from your first orgasm.
“ Arthur please “ you whimpered rolling your hips up against him, so desperate to have him inside of you.
“ So God damn wet for me “ he murmured “ such a good girl ain’t ya? “ you whined in answer, fingers wrapping around what you could of his bicep and digging your perfectly trimmed nails into his skin “ gonna make you feel so good I promise darlin’ jus’ like you deserve yeah? “ you whispered out a yes and brought your other hand to the back of his neck. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from you, still running his cock along the length of your slit. Teasing.
“ Keep looking at me. Please look at me Arthur “ he continued to do as asked. Again. Though his eyes had barely strayed from your face anyway “ I need you so badly “ Eyes locked on yours, he finally pushed into you, he took it slow. Letting you take it inch by inch, watching the look of ecstasy wash over your face. Your eyes fell closed.
He fought to retain his own composure, overwhelmed by the tight, wet, warmth of your walls enveloping him. He could feel every unique ridge and bump that made your cunt oh so perfect, feel every muscle stretch and contract as you adjusted to him.
“ god- oh god “
“ shh shh easy there. I got ya “ he paused once he was seated inside of you, grabbing at your hip with one hand to angle your hips better. Allowing you to comfortably take all of him in. He waited, let you adjust to his size, not daring to move before he got the go ahead from you “ there you go, look at you, takin’ all of me like that. So good f’me “ you basked in his praise, a dopey kind of smile spreading across your face.
“ so much bigger than him “ you whispered with a small laugh and Arthur couldn’t help the smug smile on his face. Kissing you and touching you and making you come on his tongue had been one thing. But having you like this? Having his cock buried to the hilt inside of you, so unbelievably close together. And to then be told that? To know he was about to do you better than Dutch ever had. Ever could. It felt like the biggest fuck you to the man that had been not only mistreating him of late, but also the goddess of a woman beneath him “ I’m good. You can move. Please move “
He didn’t need telling twice. Pulling out almost completely and thrusting back in in one smooth motion. The pace he fell into was just as you’d asked. Loving. Tender. But hard and deep, making sure his hips were flush with yours with every stroke. You wrapped your legs around his waist, pulled his face back down to kiss him again.
If anyone had spotted you they’d have easily mistaken you both for a lovesick couple having a private moment to yourselves. The entire thing intimate and passionate. No one would assume it was an affair in motion, hidden away in the woods by the shoreline in fear of your lover finding the pair of you there.
But it was what you wanted. What you had needed. And he felt privileged to provide.
He pulled back from your lips to watch you again, enthralled by the way your face relaxed and twisted in the pleasure he was providing you. You continued to spill those angelic sounds from your throat, growing breathier and higher pitch as he continued to drag his cock against the sopping, sensitive heat of your cunt. He had to focus hard not to finish in seconds. So much build up paired with being practically celibate for months was truly doing him no favours, but he focussed. He wasn’t letting this end until you came once more. You deserved it.
“ Keep those pretty eyes on me “ he murmured as they fell closed again “ that’s it darlin’, look at me there ya go “ everytime he spoke the slightest word of praise you practically beamed, so desperate to hear it. To be told you were good. Beautiful. So different to Dutch constantly yelling at you about how annoying you were, how much your mere presence bothered him these days. So he kept it up.
“ Doin’ so well for me. This pussy it’s perfect, ain’t that right? C’mon tell me “ he urged, still fighting off his ever looming orgasm. The sounds alone was enough to make him want to burst. Sweat slicked skin on skin, the wet sounds of your cunt dripping around the swollen intrusion of him. And those sweet sweet moans of yours.
“ yes “ you whimpered “ it’s perfect “
“ That’s a good girl “ he increased his pace ever so slightly and your hands slipped from his arms to his back, dragging your nails down him to try to pull him impossibly closer to you.
He moved a hand down between your bodies, rubbing your clit in time with his thrusts, grunting and choking back his own moans as you squeezed him. Like your body never wanted him to leave, gripping his cock with your cunt and making it ever more harder to hold back. He couldn’t help but have a look, glancing down to see the way you stretched around him, mesmerised at the way you took him in so deep.
“ tell me I- oh. Tell me I’m beautiful “ you whimpered, sounding almost like you might cry. From pleasure, from upset. He didn’t know. But he continued to do as asked.
“ you’re beautiful “ he murmured picking up his pace a little more, his sweat slick skin slapping against yours. He was desperate to see you come again. Wanted to see your face up close this time, watch your eyes roll back and your kiss swollen lips part in ecstasy “ so beautiful darlin. Doin’ so well f’me, takin’ me so well “
“ don’t stop, don't stop “ he dropped his head to your neck whispering every word of praise he could think of into your ear, your body arching up against his and whimpering and whining with every word.
“ ain’t ever looked prettier than this “ he whispered, his own voice becoming breathless with the effort “ shit- look at ya, takin’ my cock so well. So pretty darlin’ “
Your second orgasm seemed to shock you as much as him, clawing at his skin to hold him close as your body trembled beneath him, biting at his shoulder to muffle your moans.
He didn’t mean to finish inside of you, had fully intended to pull out. But the way your cunt had squeezed him, the sounds you had made as he pushed you over the edge for the second time.
He muffled his own groan of pleasure in your neck, fingers digging into the dry earth beneath you, spilling load after load whilst fully sheathed inside of you. His entire body tensed, a pleasure he hadn’t felt in an incredibly long time. His heart was hammering in his chest, blood rushing loudly in his ears as it seemed to drag on forever.
And then he came to his senses.
“ m’sorry. Shit. Sorry “ he panted as he tried to compose himself and pushed himself up onto his hands to pull out. But you yanked him back down, arms wrapping around his back again and legs tightening around his waist.
“ no. Please. Stay. Stay right there. Just a moment would you “ he had come to realise in the past.. how long had you two even been out there? However long it was, he’d come to realise he was terrible at saying no to you. Could never possibly even dream to deny you of anything you wanted from him. And so he slumped back down onto his forearms, dropping his head against your shoulder for a moment. Your chest heaved beneath him and you caught your breath, fingers tracing gentle strokes along his spine. He felt he could stay there for hours.
“ You doin’ okay? “ he asked, pressing a light kiss to your jaw when he had composed himself a little more.
“ marvellous Mr Morgan “ you whispered with a small smile “ truly. Marvellous “ he couldn’t help but kiss you again, the long lingering kind meant for two lovers.
After a few minutes you both finally moved, re dressing in silence and then sitting back in your original position against the tree. He handed you a cigarette, lighting it and placing it between your lips.
He wondered what he looked like. Wondered what evidence you had left on him. Had he sweated off the lipstick prints on his chest or were they still there? He knew you had scratched his back up good and proper and would have that reminder there for a few days at least.
“ Thank you. Mr Morgan '' you said quietly after a few silent moments of smoking, blowing out a long stream of smoke “ I mean it I- i'm not sure what I’m supposed to say “
“ Don’t say anythin’ “ he said with a small wave of his hand, appearing as blaise as he possibly could but in reality knowing he wasn’t about to forget that night anytime soon “ its fine. Really. Anytime y’need me, for anythin’, you know where I’ll be “ you smiled and he watched your body relax a little more.
“ you know, i might just take you up on that “
He sincerely hoped you would.

Update: I currently have ZERO intentions to ever write a second part to this. I have been asked so many times since uploading this originally that I’ve lost count. But I have absolutely no ideas or inspirations for a second part at any point in the near. Or far. Future. It was always meant to be a stand alone like all my one shots are. But tysm for the love <3

The Day Nightwing Finally Succumbed to the Dark Side
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Click for clarity)
Dick later that day: Tim, can you assassinate someone for me?
Tim: …. What?? Who??
Dick: Jason. I need you to kill Jason.
Tim: What the…?! I would never—
Dick: *slides him a raggedy $20 bill, an expired coupon for pizza, and a piece of gum*
Tim: —refuse a request from you. How would you like it done?
Image description below:
Panel 1 has an image of a smiling Dick. Jason is handing him his phone off of the screen.
Jason: Wanna see my girlfriends?
Dick: Aww, Jay, I’d love to see your girls!
Panel 2 has Dick talking before his voice cuts off.
Dick: I’m sure they’re—!!
He freezes in place, his smile frozen as lightning flashes behind him. He’s staring at the phone in shock and his voice gets caught off from what he’s seeing.
Panel 3-5 are pictures that Jason has taken of Jazz and Artemis.
Picture 1 has Jazz and Artemis leaning over some sort of railing, a blue sky with birds behind them. The wind is blowing their hair and they’re looking at something in the distance.
Picture 2 has Jazz and Artemis cuddling with each other, clearly still asleep or taking a nap. Both have sleepwear on and have their hair braided, curled around each other and surrounded by pillows. A Red Hood plushie is also in bed next to them.
Picture 3 has all three of them, Jason, Artemis, and Jazz. Jazz is taking the picture, selfie style, while she leans against Jason’s shoulder. Artemis is against his other side, and all three of them are dressed in supposedly fancy clothes with suits and big jewelry. All three are covered in lipstick from kisses.
Panel 6 has Dick in chibi form, staring tearfully at the phone with bloody tears of frustration. Jason is baffled looking at him.
Panel 7 has Dick finally looking up from the phone, crying even more bloody tears of jealousy and envy, while Jason is only more nervous, sweating even more. There are no words, but Dick’s aura is visibly darker.
Dick: ….
End.

Gen obsessed with how.. *dead* your Jason's color pallete is. Like, that's corpse pale right there. Not a spec of blood left flowing in there (also father Todd's skin being full of color in comparison is a nice touch)
Tumblr media
THANK YOU I love making him look a bit ghoulish. Guy who's not supposed to be alive but yes he is. no he isn't <3
#DC#DC Comics#Jason Todd#Red Hood#Jaybin#Robin ii#Art by me#Asks#I know vitamin D doesn't affect your skin colour BUT the easiest way to get it is sunlight which does ik nobody is bothered by this but me#But I have OCD. so you're getting clarification anyways 👍#Jason's way of saying if you spend too much time underground it's going to start wanting to keep you there 😁#I do think he bleeds normally and has a heartbeat and all that because he's not Dead. Alive? Well no also. He's likeboth at once and neithe#I think his physical state should be full of inconsistencies. you can't see his breath in cold weather but you can if he smokes etc.#There's also appeal to him coming back looking completely normal I do love mundane horror but#His death was important both in and out of universe and it altered things irreversibly so I think he can be a little Off as a treat#Also it adds to the misery that he's the same person like he died and came back the same person internally he's himself but#to others he looks and acts and is offputting he's Jason but Wrongg. Except not really#Because yeah he changed but that's just getting older and being affected by your experiences like everyone else ever#unfortunately for him he popped back to life Like That so everyone is just going eughh what thebfcuk#But that's a little off topic ANYWAYS one thing I really liked about Countdown was Jason being described as a siren in the dark#Like yea he's unsettling even if there's no clear reason as to why yet. He wasn't even doing anything his vibes are just rancid#My ideal Jason is one who looks like he wouldn't be out of place eating someone. He wouldn't. but you know. looming threat#I think he'd have fun indulging in the undead aspect in his more dramatic moments#Also the environment matters like during the day at the store he just seems a bit strange but at night in an alleyway it's uncanny valley#I have more to say on this topic but I'm writing a novel in the tags so I'll wrap it up#To summarize it's basically YOU CAN'T GO BACK YOU CAN NEVER GO BACK TO THE WAY THINGS WERE AND EVERYONE WHO LOOKS AT YOU CAN SEE IT#Thank you again for this ask I love when people bring up details they like to me because I like putting them in and talking about them#And just talking in general clearly lmao post-crisis really had so much going for it. lots of interesting characters

this ribbon of blood that ties us together
a/n: i luv ignoring my wips and going feral and emerging from a doc 48 hours with this word count: 6.3k synopsis: Once upon a time, a high-society girl, you were to be wed. Two years on, you live a much different life alongside Arthur Morgan, an outlaw life, despite your squeamishness to blood, killing, and the like. But when the past won't stay buried, you learn just how far you'll go to protect the man you love. hurt/comfort, mutual pining, friends to lovers, period-typical sexism & canon-typical violence
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By all accounts, according to Arthur, the two of you should not be friends.
Not that you weren’t lovely company! And nor was it that you couldn’t stand his long, sullen silences, even if he had trouble believing you were enjoying yourself, just sitting by him.
But there was a clear difference between you — one that Arthur felt sorely.
He hadn’t wanted to call you innocent, ‘cos you weren’t the naive type and you weren't stupid neither. But for running with a gang of outlaws? Your hands were remarkably clean.
See, you hadn’t killed a thing, ever: man or beast.
You got squeamish if you were on cooking duty when Pearson was butchering up the latest hunt, eyes hastily averted. You had pouted all day when John tread on a butterfly, even if it was entirely by accident. You passed off darning shirts to Tilly if they were too blood-soaked, nausea evident on your face.
Well, passed off is the wrong wording. More like, tried to sew without looking at your hands til Tilly took pity and offered to switch with you.
You weren't naive, you just didn't like to see things die. Not an awful hill to die on, Arthur had to agree. Neither did he in most cases.
Micah liked to grouse that you were definitely not cut out for gang life—said with a predatory curl of his lip, eyes shining with malicious intent. Probably was dreaming up all those ways to frighten you, or ruin your "innocence", just for the hell of seeing you shriek.
But Micah was a bad man. You knew that.
It’s why Arthur didn’t understand why the hell you tolerated him.
Watching you over the fire, the air bending in the heat, Arthur relents with a sigh. You did much more than tolerate him. If he wasn’t feeling so sour-faced, he probably go as far as to say you liked him, good and proper.
Besides, he could admit he was a better man than Micah; even if only in the faintest of ways.
He killed just as much. He’s beat men to death with his bare hands, blood flying and bones crunching. He doesn’t hesitate to send a bullet into any unlucky bastard getting between him and the next score for the gang.
Arthur knows feeling guilty doesn’t absolve him of nothin’.
At least he helped people too. Stopped when a lonely straggler needed a ride, retrieved stolen bags, and hunted down herbs and flowers. He enjoyed being the good thing riding into town, even if at time it took a hell of a lotta patience.
That was something he had, that Micah did not.
It just wasn’t enough for Arthur to understand why you might care for him.
But Arthur Morgan is not one to look the gift horse in the mouth and so despite how unlikely it should be, the two of you were friends.
It means being greeted in the early morning with a cup of coffee, the cup pressed into his hand before he’s even wiped the sleep from his eyes. You don’t linger, not any longer than you need to make sure he’s not gonna drop the hot mug.
The first time you had offered it, Arthur had been so surprised he had nearly dropped it.
You had laughed, hands darting out to steady the cup, and looked up at him through your lashes. “Hold tight, cowboy. That’s important stuff in there.”
Arthur had wondered then if this was what it was like to be struck by lightning. Each atom of his body fizzed, coming alive with a hum.
He had opened his mouth, then closed it, uncharacteristically flustered by the gesture.
You had laughed again, softer this time. Arthur finally reined himself in and tipped his hat in appreciation—mainly to hide the colour on his cheeks.
“Thank you kindly, miss.”
“You’re very welcome, Mister Morgan.” You had mused, amusement in your smile. Then you departed, other chores calling your name, with nothing more than a smile thrown over your shoulder.
For him, your friendship means finding the little gifts of the world to bring back. He hadn’t thought too much of it before, passing through homesteads and general stores with only fleeting glances.
However, after a week of hand-delivered cups of coffee, Arthur had begun to hunt for something of equal calibre he could give in return.
Several flowers sat in his tent, wilting and drying in the sun, in the grasp of a man too unsure of himself to gift them. He bought sweets, an extra chocolate bar in his satchel, before it was eaten in gnawing worry of what you’d think.
He was a brute. Trying to gift you nice things from his violent hands was downright laughable.
It wasn’t until he found a hair-pin, silver and slender with a delicate flower atop it, did Arthur manage to finally give back. He’d bought it before he could chicken out and once he had it, he thought it would be far stranger to keep it than to gift it.
You liked wearing flowers in your hair. That had been why Arthur picked them for you—but this, you could wear always, without it wilting.
He’d handed it over as you had passed him his morning coffee, pressing it into your palm as nonchalantly as he could manage. Then he hid his smile behind his coffee at your delighted gasp, your joy infectious and unmistakable.
You had thanked him profusely, for the first time not calling him Mister Morgan, but instead Arthur. His name had never sounded sweeter than falling from your lips
And that there… that was the one other, really good reason that you and him shouldn’t be friends.
Because as sure as the sun rose every morning, Arthur Morgan rose with it, undeniably in love with you.
You had been engaged once before.
Not by choice—an important distinction you hold fast to. Even if Karen likes to make passing jokes about you being a woman already spoken for, you’re thankful when Abigail quickly shoots her down with a piercing glare.
There is, after all, only one real reason a woman like you ends up on the run.
Rufus Hugo is your particular reason. A man up to his neck in wealth, pilfering the land for oil, and, as last you knew, looking for a fourth wife.
You’d once thought him unlucky, your poor fiancé.
How is it one man can be followed by such tragedy? Three young wives, in the space of a couple years, each found violated and slaughtered in the back alleys of Saint Denis, red smiles cut into their throats.
You’d once been a fool.
The papers and Sheriff had to be under his thumb, considering the blind eye and frilly stories they turned out. The rumours told a different, darker tale — ones that fell on deaf ears, too twisted up in your own plastic assurances.
Your father wouldn’t have organised this if he knew. And— and he couldn’t know, because it simply couldn’t be true.
Rufus treated you like a jewel, plying you with expensive gifts and decadent clothing, more than you’d ever had before.
When the nag in your gut didn’t leave, he had coaxed it out of you — the fear of some maniacal killer, out for the blood of Mister Hugo’s betrothed — and then he assured you with a feline smile of a wolf.
No one’s going to lay a hand on you, treasure. The only man who gets to touch you is me.
Adoring at the time.
Stomach-churning in hindsight.
You’d overheard entirely by accident, a fact that makes your heart skip stutter if you think about it too long.
Pure luck saved your life. Pure chance that you’d overheard them, wandering the halls at one of the many parties held in the honour of your engagement.
His nasty habit revealed to you in a manner of words, floating out the keyhole.
His sickening tone, lusty and humorous at once, you heard him tell the other men at the party how there was nothing better than how tight their cunts had got when he dragged the blade across their jugular.
Your stomach had plummeted. Bile crawled thickly up your throat.
The version of the world you knew contorted painfully, upside down and suddenly all wrong.
And like the vicious pain of stepping into a bear trap, the hinges of it sweeping up with sharpened blades, you knew if you stayed that you would undoubtedly be next.
You ran.
With nothing but the clothes on your back, frenzied like an animal being cornered, you ran. It was thankful you managed any coherent ideas as you tore down the stairs, pushing through the party, uncaring of the cries that followed you — but stealing a horse was probably the only reason you survived.
Though you sparsely knew how to ride it, you rode for two long, hard days before exhaustion caught up.
No amount of distance felt safe enough to slide off your dead-tired horse but you were given no choice. Your stomach ached with the growl of hunger and delirium had begun to creep in from your lack of sleep.
You were parched beyond relief and still in your god forsaken party dress, when you let your horse slow to a stop in a shallow river.
Then you’d fallen off in one spineless lump.
Caught somewhere between physical exhaustion and sleep, the freezing water had been quite the wake-up. More so when you surfaced, spluttering, and there was a man standing before you — muttering something about a strange damn woman.
It was the very first night you laid your eyes upon Arthur Morgan—soon after which, you promptly fainted from exhaustion.
The same night you disappeared from Saint Denis — becoming a ghost before you were doomed to become one at the hands on your to-be husband — you were reinvented in the warmth of a gang on the run.
Two years on, you stop wondering if Rufus Hugo still hunts for his fourth bride.
There would have been search parties for you, you’re sure of it. Even if half the party could attest to you fleeing of your own accord, a rich man doesn’t give up his prizes so easily.
But somewhere along the way, you’re not sure when, you stopped looking over your shoulder. You no longer tensed at every new, unfamiliar figure on the horizon, certain it was your past crawling back.
You’re not sure when—but you sure as hell know why.
Sliding off his horse in one fluid motion, Arthur hitches the reins on the post out front the general store with a grunt.
It’s a blazing day in Rhodes, the desert sun overhead. A mirage pools in the distance, along the main road. There’s little wind to cool you, just the buzz of flies around the horses.
It’s just you and Arthur travelling today.
An unnecessary journey for the sake of enjoying each other’s company; under the guise of camp work, of course.
You two are friends. Arthur kept his distance from most gang members, happier on the outside of the circle, which you knew.
It meant that when you got these moments — Arthur inviting you along for a journey to a town, the myriad of gifts he seemed to find for you — you couldn’t help but… hope.
You steal a glance at the cowboy, drinking in his rugged profile. He’s due for a shave, his beard a little longer than you know he prefers, but you gladly enjoy the sight.
Men in the city were groomed and clean-shaven. There’s something much more real about the ruggedness of Arthur’s appearance, his blue eyes flashing your way from beneath his hat. You catch the hint of his smile too.
Watching him subtly, he takes a moment to coo his praise to his mare, Hypatia. She nickers affectionately, searching for a treat that he dotingly gives. His rough voice whispers lowly of how he spoils her, even as he brushes her neck gently.
Sometimes, you really think Arthur likes horses more than he likes people.
It doesn’t bother you—how could it? How could you feel anything but soft-hearted when you see him dote on his horse, all his corners softened?
Besides, you think it’s a good show of character.
You’ve heard how he talks to himself sometimes, self-deprecating mutterings of how he’s a bad man, unworthy of your kindness.
But you’ve met worse men before.
Arthur may have killed, but never senselessly. Never for pleasure.
“I think,” Arthur says, his southern drawl thick. He tips his hat to the general store ahead of you both. “The spices will be second floor.”
Can’t hunt, can’t kill, can’t thieve — but god, can you cook.
It had been nice to have something to bring to the gang, considering your general squeamishness. Arthur decided long ago it was worth heading further south for the better spices closer to the city.
“I gots to pick up some more ammo, but I’ll meet ya in there.” His gaze finds the gun store across the street before tracking back to yours. He checks, “That alright?”
You nod to him, as your own mare butts your shoulder gently, making you laugh.
“Yeah, that’s alright, Arthur.” You affirm, reaching back to give her a pat. The sweet smile you wear is equal parts for her as it is for the cowboy before you.
“See you in a minute,” you say. Arthur nods, boots kicking up the red dirt as he begins to make his way down the main street.
The worn steps of the general store creek underfoot as you make your way up them, already mentally flicking through what you’d wanted to buy.
Salt, oregano, thyme… maybe some cumin, knowing how much Arthur seems to like it. Nodding politely to the shopkeeper, you head for the second story stairs — missing the flash of someone familiar through the window, peering in.
These wooden stairs are far less worn than those outside, but the traces of countless boots are evident all the same. Hand on the railing, you ascend slow, mind wandering off easily.
It’s venison for dinner, if you aren’t mistaken, from the latest hunt Charles brought in. Maybe tonight you’ll make convince Pearson to make the stew your way—spiced heavily and just the way Arthur likes it. (He hasn’t told you that half the reason is because it’s you making it.)
You approach the lined shelves with a hum, eyes dancing from colourful tin to colourful tin. Spotting your first target, a trusty tin of salt, you miss the creek of the floorboards behind you as you reach for it.
“Treasure.”
Your hand falters, fingers outstretched, halted in the place. There’s the unmistakable heat of a body behind you— but even so, the scrape of a knife leaving its sheathe confirms it.
A shuddering exhale forces from your mouth as the knife is suddenly beneath your chin, hovered above your throat. You lock in place, hand still held out. A hurricane of harrowing dread howls through you.
It couldn’t… it couldn’t be him.
No way could he have found you now, after years of your disappearance — no way was he still fucking looking for you.
The well of horror in your chest caves in, growing like a sinkhole, as your mind repeats the same word over and over: no, no, no, no, no.
The blade moves up, the cool edge of it pressing to your chin. You inhale sharply and feel a tremble start to take your body as your face is forcibly turned, pulling your gaze to a sickeningly familiar face.
“My, my,” Rufus croons. “My little bride to-be. Been lookin' for you a long time.”
Your nose wrinkles at the title, one you’d renounced the minute you'd fled, all those months ago. His dark eyes narrow at the motion and travel to your outstretched left hand, eyeing it with a glint.
“No ring.” He tuts, letting the knife fall back against your throat and resting it there.
You snatch your hand back in, hands flying to his arm and pulling with all your might—a fruitless battle against his strength. All it earns you is the sharp edge of the blade pressing further into your skin and you stop moving quickly, another gutted gasp pulled from you.
"Do you even know," He hisses into your ear. "How much goddamn money I spent on you? On trying to track you down?"
The venom in his voice leaks out, replaced by a charismatic purr you're far more familiar with. Once upon a time, it had voiced believable assurances from a man who would happen to be your husband.
Now, it only widens the sinkhole in your chest.
"You've cost me a fortune, treasure. Now I've come to collect what I'm owed."
A finger draws an idle line on your back, creeping forward along the stroke of your waist. Try as you might to suppress it, a shiver skitters through you and your throat presses ever closer to the knife again.
It's enough to pierce the skin, just a sliver, before the finger on your waist turns is joined by four others, clamping tightly.
Your balance wavers as you're forced back, the hard line of his body pressing flush up against you.
Fuck. Fuck. What the fuck are you going to do?
Eyes screwing closed, you force your breath to remain even. You— you have your own revolver but if you move, you don't doubt Rufus has any qualms with painting the shop-floor with your blood.
If he wants you, he'll have to move you- he— he'll have to leave the shop and then, you can try—
A loud clatter sound and your eyes fly open, catching on to what's been dropped — your stomach following suit quickly. Your revolver glints back at you.
"Here's what's going to happen," Rufus begins, as if he's merely discussing the weather. "You and I are gonna—"
His voice drops at the intrusion of noise, a squeak from the stairs behind you. In an instant, you remember the person you're waiting on. Arthur.
A desperate mixture of terror and relief shoves up your throat. It's a warning and a cry for help simultaneously.
When the knife shifts, you have no choice but to shift too, your body and Rufus twisting deftly—his other hand drawing his revolver in an instant, the barrel directed at Arthur. He's already drawn back the hammer.
There's no keeping your breathing even now. Not as you get to watch Arthur's distracted gaze tug upward, seeing the horror seep into his expression. His body becomes deathly still.
You don't come along on jobs for good reason. Even so, you aren't so naive as to think being an outlaw has no risks. You know Arthur has been on the barrel-end of innumerable weapons, that he risks his life on the daily.
You've just never had to see it with your own eyes before.
The scene unfolding before you feels like a honest-to-god nightmare, ripped from the most fearful parts of your mind and thrust into reality.
A slush of hysteria churns within you at the realisation you may very, very well watch Arthur die today. The man who had been the first to hold out his hand, to offer you aid, to pull you from the life you were running to escape.
The one you hold too closely in your heart, in your affections.
The thought triggers something to seize terribly in your heart — and you know suddenly, without doubt, you'll do anything to stop it from happening.
There's a long moment where nobody breathes. You watch as Arthur's sharp eyes dart from the gun, to the knife on your neck, up to your face in rapid succession. You watch his horror bleed into a vengeful fury, one like you've never seen before.
"You don't want to do that."
The words come out so low it's nearly a growl. Arthur's hand moves, drawing back to his holster when Rufus interrupts.
"Uh, uh, uh," He taunts, quickly turning the barrel of the gun to your head. The barrel of it butts against your temple.
Arthur freezes.
"That's right. You're going to drop your revolver."
It's a staggeringly long moment as Arthur wrestles with what to do, his hand still hovering, fingers twitching. Then the knife nudges closer and the single trickle of blood down the column of your neck is enough to have him complying.
It lands with a thud against the floor. It feels like the nail in the coffin.
"Why are you doin' this?"
The revolver in Rufus' hand lolls forward to aim back at Arthur, the motion almost lazy. He smiles.
"She didn't tell you?" His attention switches to you, using his thumb on the knife to stroke along your neck. "Is this who you replaced me with, treasure? He's hardly an upgrade. Hell, he looks—"
The words die off as Rufus' head snaps back to Arthur, his passive grip on his gun changing in an instant.
For one long moment, he studies the outlaw across from you both and then, horribly, you feel the moment he starts to laugh.
"Oh, treasure," He all but coos at you. You see Arthur bristle across the room. "You're precious. Runaway with the outlaws, did you? This day just gets better and better."
He focuses his gaze back on Arthur and lines up his aim, hand steady. "I've seen your wanted posters, Mister Morgan. A fine five thousand to bring you in. My bride and my money all in a day's work."
He grins like the goddamn cat that got the cream, finger adjusting on the trigger.
And even though you know he knows, even though you know you told him, you can't help how your focus snaps to Arthur's reaction. Your stomach swoops in a horrible twist.
Because you can't but wonder if you're worth the trouble. As if you think, that now, as he realises who this man from your past is, he'll relent. He'll hand you over.
Understanding flickers across Arthur's face, the word bride sinking in with a sting. Then, somehow, the lethality rippling from his very being grows, expanding tenfold.
He's downright murderous, looking every bit of the immoral, malevolent man he believes himself to be.
He is never going to hand you over, you realise, the fear dissipating in the air like smoke.
Another one takes its' place. It's a terrible truth; he'll get himself killed trying to save you.
"Best of all?" Rufus hums. "You're wanted dead or alive, Mister Morgan."
He'll kill him.
You act without thinking. Distracted enough, Rufus' strength is beaten as your wrench the arm holding the knife back far enough to bite down into it, hard. Blood springs up beneath your teeth, the hard lines of sinew snapping beneath the force.
Rufus howls in pain. The revolver drops Arthur from its' sights as Rufus shoves against you fiercely, the butt of the gun slamming against your temple in a loud knock. You both hurtle to the ground in a desperate struggle—and all you can think of it the blade in his hand.
It presses forward, aimed for your neck, and you rip your teeth out of his arm, taking a pound of flesh with it. Rufus wails again and the knife surges forward, intended for your heart.
You twist frantically and escape the hold, scampering up and with nothing but pure instinct, your urge the blade into his own chest, pressing with all your weight.
It sinks in with a satisfying, bubbling gurgle. Blood rises quickly to spew from the wound, a river of red spilling out.
He's going to kill him—he's going to kill Arthur. The manic thought has your hands prying the knife out and driving it back in again, over and over, his body making soft squelching as gutted sounds drag from his mouth.
Blood sprays wildly, coating your face and clothes, but you can't stop. You can't stop, he's going to kill Arthur and take you away from him. You can't let it happen— you can't—
Hands pull at your arms and you seize wildly, dropping the knife and thrashing away, but in doing so, Arthur swings into vision.
It's him. He's alive. He's the one touching you. He's speaking, his lips moving, but no words are reaching your ears.
Your chest is heaving, hyperventilation wracking your body. Your ringing ears finally tune back in.
"—alright, you're alright. It's me. He's dead. He's dead. You're okay." Arthur murmurs, almost nonsensically, his hands held out, palms up. He's crouched before you and he barely knows what he's saying, but you're staring at him like a wild animal, drenched in blood.
"It's okay," He says again, desperate to help you in any way he can, blue eyes locked on you. "You're okay."
There's still blood in your mouth from the chunk you've taken out of Rufus' arm and a bright red splatter of it sprayed across your face.
"I—" The word coughs out of you.
Your gaze falls into horror as you take in the body growing cold on the floor next to you. Arthur watches the panic set in as the realisation of what you've done sets in.
"I- I had to, I had to," You begin to babble, terror threaded in your tone. "I had to, he was— he was gonna kill you."
"Hey, hey," Soothing sounds fall from his lips as Arthur shifts forward, reaching for you desperately. You grip his forearms, eyes wide, as if you need to make him understand.
"He was gonna—" Your words are interrupted by your own choking sob, breathing coming too fast. "Arthur, he was gonna kill you, I-I had to."
"I know, I know," Arthur croaks out, his throat thickening as his own realisation dawns. This hadn't been an act of rabid self-defence, as he thought. You had killed Rufus for him.
You, who can't stand the sight of blood, who gets queasy at the butchers, who doesn't like to hunt or kill — but will for him. To protect him. If he wasn't already there, the sheer display of love would send Arthur crumbling to his knees.
But he just moves his hands, his violent hands, to cup your face. The blood smears. "I know, sweetheart."
You’re staring him, your eyes still wide and wild, looking frantically for something in his face. Forgiveness? Absolution?
Arthur will gladly absolve you of this, a crime that was barely a crime at all. Saving his life and your own, at the cost of the life of a killer.
There's blood on your eyelashes and in your hair. Your breathing slows but your bottom lip quivers with a fierceness. In the smallest voice he's ever heard from you, you whisper, "I had to," then crumble.
Arthur's large body cradles yours easily, one hand tucking around your middle and the other shifting to cup the back of your head as you sink into him. Your head tucks away in the crook of his neck, soft sobs spilling out easily now, and something awful aches in Arthur's chest.
"I got you," He repeats, a promise, a goddamn oath he swears to keep. "I got you, you're okay. You didn't do nothin' wrong."
He feels downright evil to move you so soon but his ears prick at some commotion below. Casting his eyes back to dead body, Arthur knows the large pool of blood has made its way through the floorboards. It's only a matter of minutes before the Sheriff will be here.
"Shit." He curses. He strokes a tender hand along your hair, calling gently for your attention.
"We gotta move. People are comin'. Can you walk?"
You dig your face out of his neck, movements sluggish. The exhaustion from the terror has drained you, your eyelids already drooping, limbs heavier.
Arthur makes the call for you.
Hoisting you softly into his hold, he keeps you nestled against his broad chest, arms tucked behind your back and the bend of your knees. He's almost thankful you can't stand, if only so he can feel the puffs of breaths that escape you against his neck, a reminder you're still with him.
Arthur eyes the locked door in the back corner. It'll lead around the back of the general store and out to the street but Hypatia and your own horse were still hitched out the front. Gritting his teeth, he prepares himself for a wild run, hoping the element of surprise is enough.
It will be enough. It has to be enough.
It's with a charging sprint that he makes it down the stairs, his boots slamming against the wooden floorboards. He doesn't pause to take in the shop-keepers aghast reaction, nor the sprinkling shower of red from the ceiling.
He bursts out into the daylight. Eagle eyes scanning the streets, it's clear that, for now, he's ahead of the law.
With less gentleness than he'd prefer, Arthur pushes you up onto Hypatia's saddle, keeping one hand on your waist to keep you upright and on. His other reaches for the reins hitched over the post and he snags them free, quickly doing the same for your horse.
There's a yell down the street, loud and demanding. Arthur doesn't spare a glance, vaulting himself up onto the saddle behind you.
With a hyah! and a loud, practised whistle, Hypatia breaks into a sprint, quickly followed by your own horse.
Two horses tear down main street, hooves thundering, a fearsome and unstoppable silhouette against the western sun.
The townspeople bleat their fear, barely leaping out the way in time as the horses rush by. Dust kicks up a red-dirt storm. Soon, when it settles, gone will be the only proof you were ever there.
Arthur rides.
The weight of you, slumped back in his chest, is less of a comfort than he would like.
He wants to— no, needs to see your eyes, needs to intercept every foul, wicked thought running rabid in your mind. You’re clawing at your soiled conscience, he’s sure of it, trying to tear the new stain on it from you.
Ruined yourself—for him.
A spidering guilt cloys in his chest, darker than ink and sharper than any blade or bullet he’s ever felt before. His chest aches.
Arthur knows he’s a bad man. He just never imagined he might drag you down to his murky depths.
Swallowing heavy, he grips the reins tighter. Leather bites into his palms. He welcomes the punishment.
He feels, more than hears, your sudden shuddering gasp as you come back to yourself. Your exhaustion must have dipped away enough and it’s clear, for a moment, you struggle to place yourself and your surroundings.
The jostle of a horse beneath you is a giveaway but even so, Arthur feels your hand curl across his toned forearm. Your grip is tight, nearly masking the tremble in your fingers. Nearly.
“It’s me,” Arthur assures, raising his gruff voice loud enough for you to hear over the rumble of galloping. “I got you, it’s Arthur.”
The grip on his arm loosens, his works sinking in, and you nod wordlessly. You let him cocoon you in safety, surrounded in his arms.
Unknown to Arthur, the ride is far too reminiscent of the journey you’d taken all those years ago; the long, hard ride with no goal but putting distance between you and where you were running from. Who you were running from.
Except this time, the one you're running from is dead. He’s dead and you killed him.
It’s unclear how far he travels, the sun sitting lower in the sky, a pinkness blooming on the horizon, before Arthur pulls Hypatia into a slower trot.
You hadn't been followed out of Rhodes, he knows, but he’d still taken you as far as he could, likely further than necessary.
But now, out of physical danger, his priority switches on a dime, all of his senses zoned in to you before him. You, still wordless, still vacant, still painted in a glaze of scarlet.
The decision come easy, Arthur using his keen skills to trot towards the sound of water. A thorough check ensures you'll have no company and Arthur wastes no time, tugging the reins to a halt with a quiet click. He dismounts, large hands reaching for you before his boots even hit the dirt.
You’re willing, your hands seeking him, finding his shoulders and allowing him to help you off Hypatia. There’s a dulled look in your eyes and Arthur knows he will do anything—anything— to change that.
Feet on the ground, you’re level with his chest and you blink slowly, staring forward.
For a moment, Arthur waits, his brows drawn together in his concern. He gives you the moment. If you need to cry, to scream, to blame him — he'll take it, weather whatever storm you have brewing within you.
But you only drag yours eyes up to meet his, voice still small, "I got blood on you."
Another fracture in his chest, another ache of misery. Arthur sighs, gaze softening immeasurably, his hand coming up to cup your cheek tenderly. The blood smears beneath his touch.
"That's alrigh', sweetheart." He murmurs, sweet as he can. He tilts his head slightly, towards the lazy, roving river, blue eyes never leaving you. “Will ya let me clean yer up? In the river?”
You seem to just notice the riverbank you’re standing upon, head twisting to peer at the roaming water of the river.
A nod, minuscule and unnoticeable, if he wasn’t tuned into your every movement.
His hand on your face shifts, reaching down to tangle with your own. It's an anchor in unsteady seas, solid and unflinching.
Your eyes take in your hands, intertwined, and trail up to his face — and you know, with a sudden burning intensity, you can't regret what you've done today.
Not if it means having him. Not if it means saving him.
Arthur leads you down to the water, slow and steady. You follow, hand clutching his tightly, like a devoted follower who trails a messiah, your salvation ahead.
Stopping only to remove your boots and his own, along with his hat, Arthur bites back his hiss at the chill of the water as he wades his way in, fully clothed. The water licks up his calves, thighs, rushing around the sudden intrusion. When it reaches above his waist, he pauses, letting you catch up.
The sun kisses the horizon in the distance, a mellow and amber light cast far across the landscape. Strange how much had happened, had changed, in a manner of hours.
Crickets chorus. In the nearby trees, an owl hoots a soft lullaby.
Arthur doesn't let go of your hand. With the other, he brushes it across the surface of the river and then reaches in, letting it pool into his palm. He brings it your face and lets its run across your hairline, loosening the blood that's crusted there.
It's a slow, dedicated process.
Hands, scarred and calloused, pass over your skin the softest of touches. His thumb works gently at your hair, washing the blood away into the river. You close your eyes when he asks you to, in a low murmur, and the cake of sin is cleaned from you in the most tender of motions.
"Will I ever be clean again?"
A whispered question, eyes still closed. The blood may be leaving but you can still feel it spraying across your face, hot and thick. It's sunk in, you're sure of it—evidence of your crime just an inch beneath your flesh.
"You are not unclean." Arthur grunts, his hand still moving as he speaks. His thumb passes over your jaw. "This— what you did, it don't dirty these hands, you hear me? You did what you needed to do. You did nothin' wrong."
The assurances feel heady and heavy and you want to shake them off. You're not yet sure if you deserve them.
"I'm not mad he's dead." You say. He has to know this.
"I'm not mad I—" Your voice wavers terribly, even if your mind is set. "—killed him."
Eyes fluttering open, you gaze up at Arthur, reverent and resolute. "I... I would do it again, Arthur."
The for you is unspoken.
But if he looks, if he peers between the lines, you know Arthur would find it, beside the I love you hidden within your earnest words.
It's barely a secret—not when you want him to see it. You've been torn open today, a festering wound split down your middle, and somehow nothing feels more crucial than him knowing.
Him knowing and loving you still, seeing you unchanged, despite it all.
The water rushes around you, carrying your transgressions away, and his hand in yours, dwarfing it, does not falter. Arthur's eyes graze across your face. He seems to find what he's searching for.
"You won't ever have to, sweetheart." He says, voice nearly a whisper.
His lips find your hairline, scraping a delicate kiss against the clean skin there. Then he presses his forehead against yours, soothing and intimate, a lifeline. An understanding and a reciprocation.
A sudden urge possesses you, the words clawing up your throat in a frenzy.
You need to tell him, need to say the words aloud and make him understand, as you had on that shop floor.
What if he doesn't know?
His forehead shifts against yours, the tips of your noses nudging together, your interwoven hands grasping each other just as tightly as the other. A warmth rises in your chest, glowing and fizzling, and despite the day, your lips twitch with the hint of a smile.
He knows.

The saddlebag prompt is so silly! I love it! I have a fluffy child reader idea too!
The child convinces Arthur, John, and some of the others to play pretend a passenger train robbery. While they play, John surprises the child by picking them up and taking them over to the "loot bag" Arthur is holding for the game.
The child is all giggly when John puts them in it, and Arthur hops on his horse to escape with the "loot".

SUMMARY: The camp is quiet until you convince Arthur and John to play a pretend train robbery.
Tumblr media
It was a lazy afternoon at camp, the kind where even the wind seemed to have decided to take a break. You, however, had far too much energy to sit still. After spending half the morning running around, you had an idea that just couldn’t wait. You found Arthur sitting by the campfire, sharpening his knife while John cleaned his guns nearby.
“Uncle Arthur! John!” you called, running up with wide eyes and a mischievous grin.
Arthur raised his head, his brow furrowing in curiosity. “What’s goin’ on, kid?” he asked, putting the knife down.
“I wanna play! Let’s rob a train!” you announced with dramatic flair, throwing your arms up.
John grinned and glanced over at Arthur. “Well, sounds like we’ve got ourselves a criminal mastermind.”
Arthur chuckled softly, shaking his head. “A train robbery, huh? Alright, kid. Guess we’ll need a loot bag then.” He got up, grabbing an old saddlebag from his horse. “What’s the plan?”
Your eyes gleamed with excitement. “We stop the train and take all the treasure! You, Uncle Arthur, carry the loot bag, and John, you handle the passengers!”
John played along, giving a mock serious nod. “Passengers, huh? Alright, kid, you’re the boss.”
As the two of them got into position, you ran around as the "passengers," pretending to be someone very rich. “Please, sir! Don’t take my treasure!” you cried, clutching an invisible pile of jewels.
John crept toward you, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “I’m afraid we gotta take everything you got.”
Just as you were about to run, John grabbed you gently, scooping you up into the air. “Look what we’ve got here! The real prize!”
You squealed with laughter as John swung you around, making you feel like you were flying. He carried you over to Arthur, who stood there holding the loot bag.
Arthur looked down at you with a smirk. “Well, well. Looks like we found ourselves some valuable loot.” He held the bag open, and John carefully placed you inside, your giggles echoing as your legs dangled out of the bag.
Arthur grinned, lifting the bag with you still inside. “Better hold on tight. I’m takin’ off with the goods.”
Before he could start his "getaway," though, Sean came strutting into camp, his wild red hair bouncing as he caught sight of the scene. “Now what in the name of all things holy is goin' on here?”
You peeked out of the bag, giggling uncontrollably. “We’re playing train robbery!”
Sean’s face split into a wide grin. “Aw, shite! I love me a good robbery! Count me in!” He ran up beside John, rubbing his hands together. “So, who’s the unlucky bastard we’re robbin’?”
John shook his head, still smiling. “Already got the best loot right here.” He pointed at you, still giggling in Arthur’s loot bag.
Sean threw his head back and laughed. “Ah, but ya gotta watch out for them sneaky lawmen, Arthur!” He made finger guns and started shooting at imaginary enemies. “Bang! Bang! The law’s comin’ for ya!”
Arthur played along, hopping onto his horse. “Better outrun ‘em then!” He spurred his horse into a slow trot around the camp, with you laughing from inside the saddlebag.
By now, Javier had wandered over, his guitar slung over his shoulder. “What’s all the noise about?” he asked, amusement in his voice as he watched the scene unfold.
“Train robbery!” you yelled from the bag, waving your arms.
Javier chuckled and shook his head. “Ah, so that’s what I’m missing.” He strummed a few chords on his guitar, playing a lively tune. “Well, no robbery’s complete without a good getaway song, right?”
As Javier’s playful melody filled the air, Charles, who had been quietly sharpening his tomahawk nearby, couldn’t help but join in on the fun. He walked over, arms crossed, a rare smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “You need any help making your escape, Arthur?”
Arthur snorted. “Could use some muscle to back me up.”
Charles nodded and jogged beside Arthur’s horse as he continued his slow “escape” around camp, giving you a reassuring grin as you peeked out of the bag.
But then came Hosea, who had been watching from the sidelines with a bemused expression. He sauntered over, shaking his head. “I see you’ve all lost your minds.”
John grinned. “Come on, Hosea. You know you want in.”
Hosea chuckled softly, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “Well, I suppose someone has to play the lawman. You folks are in big trouble now,” he said, raising his hands like he was ready to arrest you all.
Everyone burst out laughing, even Arthur cracking a grin as he slowed his horse and “surrendered” the loot bag. “Alright, Hosea, you caught me,” he said, carefully lifting you out of the saddlebag and setting you back on the ground.
You wobbled slightly, still giggling as you dusted yourself off. “You got us all, Hosea!”
Hosea winked at you, his eyes full of warmth. “You’re lucky I’m feeling merciful today.”
Sean came over, lifting you onto his shoulders with a playful grin. “Well, we may have lost the loot, but that was one hell of a robbery!”
They all laughed, Javier strumming his guitar as Charles, John, and Arthur looked on with soft smiles. Even Hosea shook his head with a chuckle.
“All thanks to our little mastermind,” Arthur added, tipping his hat toward you.
You grinned from your perch on Sean’s shoulders, beaming at all of them. “We should rob another train tomorrow!”

"If I turn around and there's a hero, vigilante, anti hero, villain, anything or anyone related in anyway to the Justice League, I'm going to fucking lose."
It was quiet for a second, then, "Don't turn around?"
Red fucking Robin. "What did I just say?" Phantom turned on his heel to face the young vigilante.
The kid threw his hands up, "I told you not to turn around!"
"And yet here we are," he crossed his arms. "The hell do you want?"
"You seem awfully snippy today."
"Seeing as you and everyone under the sun has been stalking me, trying to get answers to questions I'm not going to answer, I think you can excuse my attitude."
With a huff, Red Robin also crossed his arms. "How do you know what I'm going to ask if no one else has been able to talk to you?"
"Because living beings are all the same. Curiosity of the unknown drags you around by your ear." Phantom turned back to continue walking away, "Now go away."
The kid matched his pace. "No way,"
His eyebrow twitched ever so slightly. "I have a meeting soon, kid. You can't come along." That was a total lie. He had nothing going on that demanded his attention now that Constantine had ditched him after getting the demon under control. Maybe he could drop by Fawcett and visit Billy?
"No you don't." This damn kid-! "You've been wandering aimlessly for the past hour."
Phantom turned again to face the vigilante. "First of all, stalking people is hella creepy. Second of all, my schedule is none of your damn business."
"Careful there, kid," Red Robin smirked, "You'll get scolded for having a potty mouth."
"I'm thirty-fucking-eight!"
"You're literally fourteen."
Phantom closed his eyes. "Nocturn give me patience," he then looked Red Robin directly in the eye, "We've had this conversation. I'm dead. I don't physically age. That doesn't change the fact that I have walked this planted for thirty-eight years. Is that simple enough for you to understand or do I need to dumb it down for you?"
Red Robin blinked, his mouth agape. What? Did he just- The nerve! The audacity! "I'll have you know," he huffed, "I'm smarter than Batman."
"He tell you that himself?"
"Yes." It was one of the only times Batman had ever praised him, so that interaction was held particularly close.
Phantom looked Red Robin up and down, his expression reading both 'are-you-serious' and 'what-do-want?-a-medal?' Without a word, he turned back to his path and began his march anew. Any attempts at conversation from Red Robin was ignored, much to the younger's chagrin. Maybe he'd go away if he ignored him long enough.
Phantom and Red Robin wandered for the better part of an hour, not so much as a word passing between them. Neither stopped for any reason, and neither broke the set pace. It could almost be considered a friendly stroll through the city, if one ignored the slight apprehension surrounding the two.
Red Robin took this time to observe Phantom. He'd never spent too much time around anyone from the JLD who wasn't Raven, so he took the opportunity to get to know another on the team.
Phantom insisted that he was thirty-eight, not fourteen, and that the reason he looks as young as he does is because he looks like he did when he died. Not a comforting thought in the slightest. He knew that, though, when B had briefed him on all the members of or associated with the Justice League.
His powerset was almost completely unknown. They'd all seen him use a flight/levitation ability, as well as some form of density shifting and a healing factor, but Red Robin was more than sre that Phantom had more up his sleeve than that. He worked as a part of the JLD team, so he had to have some magical understanding or capabilities. But Raven wouldn't tell him if she knew, no matter how much he pestered her.
Looking at the kid now, Red Robin seriously wondered if Phantom had a civilian disguise. Ether white hair, toxic green eyes, the glow he seems to give off, and the contrasting bright white and vantablack suit and gloves he wore could not be easy to hide.
There was also a slight sense of unease Red Robin felt when looking at or being around Phantom for a long time. He hadn't noticed it before, but now it was as obvious as a neon sign. It was a strange mix of Uncanny Valley and sinking horror. Why was he feeling like this?
Phantom stopped in his tracks in a dead end alley. Without turning around he said, "Alright, spit it out. What do you want to ask?"
Red Robin hesitated for a moment. Surely it couldn't be that easy? Was Phantom really going to answer his questions? He shook his head to snap himself out of it.
"Come on, kid," Phantom pulled a piece of chalk from his front pocket. "I don't have all day."
Red Robin wanted to scoff because he most certainly did have all day. But, he pushed it aside. He was about to get answers that not even the Justice League could get! He decided to start of easy. "When did you die?"
"Try again." was the growled response.
"What?"
"I said 'Try again'."
Okay, okay. Touchy. "Why'd you join the Justice League?"
"I was bored." It was clipped. Phantom's on edge. Why?
"What're the rest of your powers? I know you have more than what you've shown everyone."
Phantom walked to the wall and started to draw a door on it with the chalk. "Next question."
Red Robin rolled his eyes. "Fine. How did you die?"
Every movement from Phantom froze. Every minute, involuntary twitch, even the telling signs of breathing. For a long minute, nothing happened and Red Robin had the dawning sense that he'd just asked something he really shouldn't have.
Phantom drew a circle in the rectangle he'd drawn on the wall, completing the door. "I'm going to give you a piece of advice that you seem to have completely glossed over." The piece of chalk was hidden away as he gripped the now 3D door handle. "If you value your life, don't ask the dead how they died." He opened the door and stepped through before looking back at the red clad vigilante. "They won't be so nice about it." Then, the door closed and the chalk erased itself.

ARTHUR MORGAN X READER, angst and heartbreak. yearning and desire. arthur’s desperate lol. fixing of relationship? sorta. 700+ words
Tumblr media
YOU hadn’t even realized Arthur was back.
He’d been gone only a few weeks, sent off on one of Dutch’s jobs. Not so long you could forget him, but long enough to notice the space he left behind.
No one had said a word when he rode in, and maybe that was because he didn’t seek you out. Why would he? You weren’t together anymore.
So you kept yourself busy at camp, quietly tending to small tasks and avoiding the ache of waiting. Pretending you didn’t care.
Later that night, when the fire had dimmed and most had turned in, you found yourself near the horses, breathing in the cool night air.
And there he was—sitting on a log, rolling a cigarette slowly, his silhouette framed by the moonlight.
He didn’t look up as you approached, didn’t move. Just sat there, still and quiet.
“You’re back,” you said softly, folding your hands in front of you, trying to steady your voice.
His eyes met yours then, tired but steady. “Yeah. Dutch sent me out quick after Rhodes.”
You nodded, swallowing the flutter in your chest. “You didn’t have to take that job.”
He shrugged gently. “Not much choice in that.”
“No,” you whispered. “You never do.”
The silence between you stretched, heavy and fragile. Your fingers twined nervously.
“You alright?” he asked quietly.
“Still here,” you replied, offering a small, sad smile.
Arthur shifted, glancing down at his hands. “I brought you something.”
Curious, you raised your brow. “Why?”
From his saddlebag, he pulled a handkerchief—white, edged with delicate blue stitching.
“Saw it and thought of you.”
You took it with trembling fingers, your skin brushing his. His hand was warm against yours.
“You didn’t write,” you murmured, eyes downcast.
“I thought you didn’t want me to.” He paused for a moment and his jaw tightened, “I thought I was doin’ right by you.”
“Yeah,” you said softly, a hint of bitterness in your tone.
He stood slowly, hesitating, but not stepping closer.
“I didn’t want to hurt you,” he said. “Figured lettin’ go was kinder.”
“Kinder than what? Staying? Trying?”
His eyes dropped away.
“I thought about you every day,” he said, voice rough with honesty. “Even when it tore me up.”
You swallowed hard, your heart fluttering despite yourself.
Then, before you could think, he stepped closer.
You should have moved back. But you didn’t.
He was near enough now to see the lines beneath his eyes, to feel the weight he carried. His gaze flickered to your lips, then back.
“You look real pretty tonight,” he said quietly, rough around the edges.
You said nothing.
His hands found your waist, pulling you close with a sudden urgency. You gasped softly, your hands resting lightly on his chest, but he didn’t let go.
His breath brushed your neck, warm and uneven.
“I shouldn’t…” he muttered, voice thick, before his lips pressed to the side of your throat—slow, firm, tracing your pulse with a hunger that made your knees weak.
Not gentle. Not soft. Like a man wrestling with himself to hold back but losing.
You shivered, fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt. His stubble scratched tender skin.
“I shouldn’t be doin’ this,” he murmured again, voice trembling with need. “But I can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout you… what you smell like… how you taste…”
His kisses traveled lower, teeth grazing, hands tightening at your waist, pulling you flush against him. His desperation was raw, unfiltered, like he was making up for every night apart.
Your body softened instinctively, leaning into him, hands clutching his back like you never wanted to let go.
His lips moved from your neck to your jaw, the heat of him burning through every wall you’d built.
You didn’t stop him.
Because you missed him just as much.
Tonight, neither of you had the strength to fight it anymore.

So was that a joke?
You’d rushed through every damn chore like a fool, every errand checked off, every useless task finished, all because he said he’d take you out of camp. And you’d agreed, of course you had. What was there to say no to? Like anyone ever took your no seriously anyway.
You figured you'd at least try to enjoy it. Try to pretend this life wasn’t a cage. Try to smile, and hell, you did smile, just a little, getting ready with a stupid kind of hope rising in your chest.
And then what do you see?
Him.
Walking off.
With shame.
An apologetic look in his eyes and a damn paper in his hand handed to him by Mr. Strauss, of all people.
Of course.
You caught the tail end of the German’s muttering, something smug and useless like, “He’s in the process of moving to another city ---you best hurry, catch the fellow-”
You weren’t interested.
Not anymore.
You weren’t excited now.
You were enraged.
"Didn’t even have the guts to at least apologize before leaving. Spineless bi-"
"(Y/N)."
Oh great. Another sermon.
Hosea stood at the entrance of your tent, arms crossed, disappointment practically radiating off him.
"What did I tell you about-"
"Yeah, yeah. Respect him. Respect others." You threw your hands up. "BUT WHAT ABOUT ME?! Why does no one ever respect ME or my---someone else could have gone in his place but no-"
"He is doing all this for you! And what exactly are you throwing a tantrum about, huh? He’ll be back in a few minutes to take you out. There are hours left in the day."
"It’s not about hours," you snarled, voice sharp with years of swallowed fury. "It’s about priorities, Papa. Not that you’d know much about those. Your only priority is- no, everyone’s only priority is Dutch. Aww, poor baby Dutch. Let’s all tuck him in and tell him he’s doing amazing, sweetie."
"You are impossible!" Hosea barked. "Can’t have one decent conversation with you without you dragging his name or the gang’s through the mud. God--"
He turned and left, muttering and shaking his head like he always did.
Like he has been doing for years.
Now, Arthur breaking his promise? That was a long-forgotten thought.
Now you were angry at everything.
At being treated like some unruly little brat.
'Not mature.'
'Is that any way to speak to your elders?'
"Hosea, come get your girl, she’s off the meter again.'
That’s all your ears ever seemed to catch these days. That, and the way they all looked at you, like you were a problem that needed managing. A spark they were all waiting to smother.
And your father's eyes…
You won’t admit it, but they make you cower. You hate that look. The disappointment. It buries itself under your ribs and gnaws.
It’s better not to be seen at all than seen like that.
"Yeah, well... that’s what I am, I guess." You muttered under your breath, grabbing the mirror with trembling hands, knuckles turning white from the grip.
Disappointment.
Nuisance.
The stupid earrings you’d carefully picked out, the eyeliner smudged from effort, it all looked like a waste now. A joke you’d told yourself.
"No point in staying, then."
❀˖°
Arthur rode hard.
The dust kicking up behind his horse like smoke off a dying fire. He was muttering curses under his breath, hat pushed back, jaw tight. The paper from Strauss still burned in his pocket like a brand , some nonsense errand that should’ve been handled tomorrow. But no, Arthur had said yes, like a damn fool. Like someone who didn’t have a promise to keep.
"Such a damn fool." His horse huffed as if agreeing with him.
But at that moment, some extra cash meant extra things for you. And he couldn't say no. He always wanted to give you tenfold. But of course, you might have ignored that notion in the blindness caused by your frustration.
You were probably waiting. Or, worse.....you weren’t.
He spotted the wildflowers on the side of the trail just past the bend. Simple little things, yellow and pink, no name he could think of, but soft-looking. Pretty. Like you looked this morning, tugging on that shawl and giving him that rare half-smile that haunted him the whole damn ride.
'What am I sayin', she looks prettier by every second.'
But right now, all he could imagine was...you with arms crossed, eyes rolling, that stubborn little scowl he’d memorized like a prayer. He could see you pacing somewhere, cursing under your breath, probably seconds away from flinging a rock at his head or someone else's the second he showed up.
He yanked the reins, brought the horse to a halt, and slid off in a rush. His fingers were clumsy, gloved, too big for something so delicate. He almost tore the stems trying to gather them fast enough.
"Shit," he muttered as one bloom snapped. He tossed it aside and kept grabbing more.
He didn’t know what he was doing. You weren’t the type to swoon over flowers. Hell, you might throw them back in his face. But he had to bring something.
It wasn’t about the flowers. It was about the hours you waited. The silence he left you with. The look you probably gave the sky when he didn’t show up.
But he hoped they’d at least make you pause before yelling at him. Maybe you’d roll your eyes a little softer. Maybe you'd stay long enough to hear him say sorry.
He tucked them carefully under one arm and kicked his horse into motion again, the weight in his chest getting heavier the closer he got.
Please still be there.
Please still be his.
But lo and behold, what does he find?
"Wh--what do you mean gone?" Arthur demands, voice low but sharp.
Lenny shrugs, uneasy. "Oh, you know… another fight, probably. Hosea came ‘round later, asked if we’d seen her."
"And?"
"We didn’t. He left just minutes ago, lookin’ for her."
Arthur’s grip tightens around the flowers. His heart drops.
❀˖°
Hosea, on the brink of losing himself, finally finds you-
There, slumped but defiant in the back of a rattling wagon, wrapped in a rough wool shawl, arms crossed like you own the damn thing.
A group of burly lumberjacks laugh, bickering and talking in the wagon until they notice him and tip their hats.
"Hey, mister-"
"Stop the wagon, please."
"Why would we do that?"
"Because that’s my daughter--(Y/N), GET OFF this instant! What in God’s name were you thinking, running off with strangers?”
"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Papa. But you know what? I want Sunday dinners and pearls, not blood and broken spurs. I am tired of everything, of being some--some kind of burden."
Burden...? He heard that correctly, or is it just his age playing silly tricks?
One of the lumberjacks cuts in, grinning, "Sorry to interrupt, but we can’t just let a girl who doesn’t wanna go with you....go."
"That’s right," you grin back. "Finally, some people who understand me, and my choices. We are going to town, and I am starting life on my own terms." You clutched a small bag of clothes you had tighter with your chest, making Hosea roll his eyes.
Right. As if that's easy. Do you even have any idea what kind of people exist out there?
"(Y/N), now’s not the time for taunts or jabs! You know it's dumb! Be sensible! GET. OFF. Before I-"
“Before you what, old man? Lasso her or something? Are you able to do that?" the driver with the brown ponytail chimed in, barely hiding his grin. Helpful as they were, the men were clearly enjoying the family drama, especially the sharp mouth you had on you. Little did they know they were talking to an outlaw---well...more of a father at the moment.
Who was weak.
Weak when it came to you.
'Yeah, I bet I won't be able to do that.' Hosea though.
One of the lumberjacks chuckles, slapping his knee. "Old man, you sound like a bear with a sore paw."
Another lumberjack piped up, grinning wide. "Yeah, maybe you oughta buy her a pie or somethin’, works better than all that hollerin’. "
The joke landed with a laugh from the others, but it sent a cold chill crawling down Hosea’s spine.
He wasn’t going to let you run off like this. Not like this.
And that damn smirk on your face, as if you’d won something, wasn’t evil. No, it was worse.
It was innocent.
So trusting, isn’t she......so full of hope when it comes to achieving what you want.
The thought made his chest tighten.
You let out a dry laugh, arms crossed tighter. "See? Even these fine gentlemen think you’re all bark and no bite."
Hosea bit back the sharp reply rising to his tongue. His horse began to slow as the wagon rolled farther ahead. His heartbeat quickened, not from anger now, but fear.
He could see it, the sadness in your eyes, barely hidden beneath the armor of pride.
And for a moment, it was as if time stopped.
The two of you locked in another silent fight, just like always. That exhausting, endless tug of war neither of you ever seemed to win.
Was this it then?
Why is he frozen...?
Why has your gaze stopped him?
Did you stop to even think about all of them for once?
Then-
Whoosh!
A gust of wind kicked up dust as a rider tore past him, nearly brushing his stirrup.
Hosea’s horse startled and danced sideways.
Arthur.
"Stop the damn wagon."
"Now who are you-"
"ARTHUR, NO! DON'T YOU COME HERE RUINING EVERYTHING!" you shouted, scrambling to your knees in the back. "I am not going back, you hear me?! Don’t you dare stop the wagon, Richie!"
On first-name basis, are we?
Arthur’s jaw ticked. His eyes, dark, unreadable, flicked from you to the driver, then to the other men, and back again. Whatever softness he might’ve had left after a hard day was gone now.
He wasn’t happy.
"What’s with you men chasin’ after her like she’s game?" one of the men asked, narrowing his eyes.
"You better back off before I-"
"Before you what, cowboy?" another scoffed, tightening his grip on the reins.
And in a flash, before anyone could blink, Arthur was off his horse and hauling himself up the side of the wagon like it owed him money.
"ARTHUR! YOU IDIOT!" you shrieked, scooting back, clutching the edge like it’d save you.
"Git!" he hollered at the driver, grabbing his collar. "Off the wagon. Now."
The men flinched.
Even dear, poor Richie.
"Alright, alright--Geez-," one muttered, raising his hands. "We ain’t gettin’ paid enough to wrestle some wild love story."
"You’re all insane," you spat, glaring at Arthur as he jumped down and held a hand out like this was some fairy tale. "I mean it! Don’t touch me, don’t talk to me-"
"I’m takin’ you back," he said, quiet but firm. "Even if you kick, bite, and scream the whole damn ride."
You did all three. And still ended up in his arms.
❀˖°
"You’re insane, Arthur. Insane." You kicked again, lightly this time, the fight wearing off as he settled you sideways in front of him on the saddle.
"I told you I wasn’t coming back-"
"Yeah, well," he muttered, his arms bracketing you tightly, "you’re a damn terrible liar, kid."
How dare he call you that-
"I hate you."
"Shocking."
"You ruined everything."
"You ruined your eyeliner cryin’ behind that wagon. Don’t act like you weren’t waitin’ for me."
"I was not-"
He leaned down, voice low near your ear. "I’ll always chase you. You know that, right?"
You stiffened.
"Wherever you run, I’ll find you. I’ll knock on doors. I’ll yell at wagons. I’ll punch lumberjacks if I have to. even kill if that's what it takes."
"But you didn’t have to haul me like that in front of everyone, you overgrown ox!"
"Could’ve fooled me, the way you were throwin’ a tantrum in that wagon."
"I was riding to town with decent, non-judgmental people."
"Right. Real decent. One of ‘em had a knife up his sleeve."
You blinked. "No he didn’t---wait, did he?"
"Point is," Arthur said, firm, "you don’t go running off without tellin’ someone. I came back and you were just... gone. Like you didn’t care what that’d do to me. Do you know...that makes my heart bleed?"
You looked away, jaw tight. "Maybe I didn’t."
Arthur huffed a bitter laugh. " Oh, I know you don't. You just like makin’ us chase after you. Like a game."
"Well, for starters, I also like not being suffocated and being treated as inferior. But who cares about that, right?"
"And I prefer knowin’ you’re not climbin’ into wagons with strangers like a damn runaway with a death wish."
You growled, trying to elbow him off, but he caught your wrist mid-swing, voice low but trembling with emotion.
"I will always find you. You hear me? You run, I’ll follow. You disappear, I’ll tear the world down ‘til I get you back, darlin'."
You tried to look unaffected, but your breath caught. “Romantic threats. How charming.”
“Not a threat. It’s a promise.”
You let out a scoff, yet again. "You’re still an idiot."
"And you’re still mine."
Hosea followed on his own horse, slumped forward in the saddle like a man ten years older, muttering under his breath.
His horse snorted. He sighed again, watching you and Arthur up ahead, bickering, leaning too close, then arguing again.
I am too old for this shit.
"Hosea, you alright?"
"Hm. You?."
"Better now."
Arthur glanced over, catching the weight in the old man’s expression. He knew, knew damn well, how much your actions had cut Hosea deep. But he wasn’t gonna say anything. Not now. Not when you were already burning hot enough to set the whole camp aflame. He wasn’t about to make you feel worse than you already did, even if you were hiding it behind all that noise. He made a quiet note to talk to Hosea later--when things weren't so... loud.
"I’m gonna head to town with her."
"No, I literally look like I crawl-"
"Hushhh, you look fine, darlin. You always do." A kiss to your crown again.
"Sure. Have a good time." And with that, the white-haired man nudged his horse into a steady trot the other way, clearly choosing peace over whatever hell the two of you had brewing.
Arthur turned his attention to you sitting in front of him, eyes locked on the back of your head.
Menace.
He reached forward and pinched your side, hard enough to make you jump.
"Are you five?!"
He grinned, the picture of smug satisfaction. "Just makin’ sure you hadn’t turned to stone from all that brooding."
You twisted your neck just enough to glare at him. "You ever gonna quit treating me like I belong in a glass box?"
"Not until you quit flingin’ yourself into danger like it’s a damn pastime."
"Maybe I like pastimes."
Arthur grinned. "Then I guess I’m yours, ‘cause chasin’ after you’s a full-time job."
You glanced down at the slightly crushed flowers poking from his saddlebag, your frown softening for half a second.
He noticed, but didn’t say a word.
Instead, he leaned closer, voice quieter now. "I know what you’re runnin’ from, alright? And I know I ain’t perfect. But I’ll always chase you. You run, I follow. That’s the deal now."
"Whatever."
"And sorry...darling. For being late."
"....'s fine." Your childish mumble was caught by him.
Arthur gave a soft, boyish laugh. "Good. Hate when you’re mad at me. Hurts worse than a bullet."
Before you can react, he brushes a stray lock of hair behind your ear, and then his lips are on yours. Gentle, steady. A soft promise in a kiss.
When he pulls back just a little, his eyes search yours, full of something tender and stubborn all at once.
"I’ll always find you, woman," he murmurs, voice rough. "Ain’t no one gonna love you the way I do. Ain’t no fella' stupid enough to even try-"
"Wha-excuse me-"
"You're my trouble. My damn heartbeat too. I don't want peace if it ain't got you in it."
You catch the corner of his mouth twitching, half a smile, half a challenge.
He grins softly. "Not that I’m planning to let you get away anytime soon." He pulls you back tightly to his chest, making the message clear.
"Did those bastards hurt you? Touch you?"
"...No..as if I would allow that." You uttered the words in his neck with a sigh, minutes away from dozing off on his chest, but he wasn't satisfied.
Damn right cuz' if they had, I will turn this horse round' and finish the whole deal.
He pulled you away by the back of your neck, receiving an annoyed grunt from you, his fingers warm against your skin but firm, eyes sweeping over you with barely contained urgency.
"Let me see you," Arthur murmured, voice low and thick with something sharp beneath the softness. His eyes roamed, from your face to your collarbone, down to your arms. Every inch he could see, he checked, like he was memorizing you all over again just to make sure you were still in one piece.
His thumb brushed over a faint red mark on your wrist, from gripping the wagon, maybe, or from bracing yourself too tight.
A shadow crossed his face.
"That from them?" he asked, jaw clenching.
"No. I told you, they didn’t lay a finger on me. Calm down."
Still, he lifted your wrist to his lips, pressing a kiss there. Then the other. Soft, reverent, like the damage done, real or imagined, needed his touch to undo it. Then the other wrist slow, deliberate, like each kiss might erase his worry.
His arms wrapped around you again, tighter this time, his cheek resting against your hair.
His fingers brush your cheek, warm and sure, as if daring you to argue, though you say nothing.
"Runnin’ off like that, ridin’ in wagons with strangers… You tryin’ to age me early, woman."
❀˖°
Arthur doesn’t leave camp for a whole week. Not once. The others start noticing, Susan raises an eyebrow, Dutch gives him a knowing look, but Arthur just shrugs it off. This week is about you. To make you think thrice before running off. To make you forget all the reasons that made you leave in the first place.
Every morning, he’s right there, a quiet presence by your side, ready to pamper you like you’re the queen of the world. He rubs your temples with slow, careful strokes, fingers warm and steady as they work through the knots you didn’t know you had. The same with your feet.
Say farewell to chores. His darling is not even lifting a finger.
"Quit squirming," he says, his voice low and teasing when you try to protest. "You look like you need this more than you think."
You scoff but don’t pull away. He knows exactly how to make you relax, even if you pretend to act annoyed.
He sneaks you wildflowers he picks from the woods, jewels, fresh berries from the camp larder, pastries, feeds you himself and makes little hand-drawn cards with his awkward scrawls that make you roll your eyes and laugh at the same time. Even silly drawings of other members just to hear your cackle.
"You’re such a fool," you tell him as he holds you on top of him, though your playful chuckle softens the sting.
Arthur just grins, brushing a stray hair behind your ear as he cuddles you closer in his cot, perfect enough for you both. "Maybe. But I’m your fool, princess."
Always.

Over the years Tim had lead, taught and helped countless other teens come into thier powers and said teens looked at him like he hung the stars. They admired him greatly and wanted to do something to make thier mentor/big brother figure proud.
So when they found Tims soulmate they were absolutely ecstatic.
Yeah sure, the guy was the child of evil mad scientists and apparently the heir of a creepy fake vampire supervillian but they'd seen weirder couples in the hero community. They just needed to convince him to join the heros side!
Naturally they try to kidnap Danny and he has no idea whats going on other than a bunch of kids in superhero costumes are trying to abduct him. Between his powers as Phantom, that they seem to not know about (thank the ancients that ghosts don't show up well of pictures and that he started wearing a mask) and his own parents paranoid housebuilding techniques Danny escapes them easily.
Danny figured they would leave him alone eventually, right? If not he would have to call the cops for stalking and harassment.
If that didn't work he would just set all the house lazers to stun. Worst case scenario he might have to call the Justice League emergency line and yell at them to come get thier kids.
It would also be funny if he just kicked them out as Phantom
