Apparently some star fleet admiral is committing treason again and putting earth under military dictatorship for its own "safety" but all I remember about the past 2 episodes is that Odo says he learned how to hack classified star fleet files from Quark

Tournament Details:
Teams compete in multiple games against other teams and the team with the most overall wins is the tournament winner.
The game is played in a large outdoor area with plenty of cover (trees, hills, etc.) divided in half into “territories” belonging to the two different teams.
The objective of the game is to find and retrieve the other team’s flag (which they have hidden somewhere) and return it to your own team’s base before the other team finds your flag.
Teams can hide their flags anywhere on their territory provided that the flag is visible from at least one angle standing on the ground at average height.
While on the opposing team’s territory, a player can be tagged by an opposing team member, at which point they are then “taken prisoner” to the opposing team’s base and must remain there until a member of their own team comes to free them by tagging them.
Physical combat other than tagging isn’t allowed. Injuring another player is grounds for disqualification.
No phasers, tricorders, communicators, transporters, or any other technology are allowed (with an exception for technology integrated into particular characters such as Seven’s implants or technological disability accommodations like Geordi’s visor).
Cheating teams are disqualified from that game, which is equivalent to a loss (assuming they’re caught cheating, of course).
For the purposes of this tournament, it can be assumed that all characters have all of the knowledge and experience they gained over the course of their respective shows, are reasonably aware of all opposing team member’s abilities, and are all equally motivated to win the tournament.

An often overlooked aspect of character and relationship building is the question: "How do the characters adress each other?"
It's a surprisingly interesting facet of DS9. I think Worf not once calls Quark by his name, it's always "the Ferengi".
Rom calls him only "Quark", I think, once or twice in the whole run of DS9. Otherwise it's always "Brother" or "my Brother". While Quark uses "my Brother" mostly derogatively, but when things get ugly, he says "Rom!"
[For all people reading this not familiar with Star Trek, another example: When Dean Winchester says "Sammy" you know things are escalating horribly.]
If someone knows an instance where Worf calls Quark by his name, let me know. I am looking for this for years. Maybe I heard it in the german translation.
Sisko is always called "Ben" by colleagues, which looks like an intimate name. Until you realize that he is called "Benjamin" only by his most intimate familiar, Dax. And mockingly and twisted, by Dukat. His full name is his pet name, while the abbreviated version is his more distanced, regular used name. Awesome detail.
Odo even mocks Kira for being interested in Chief O'Brien. Excuse me, I mean "Miles" 😉 In my own comic (not Star Trek related, I'm not brave enough for that), I, as the time of writing this, have only three characters on screen. And I put a lot of thought into the question: How do they adress each other? And even made a bit of fun of it.
Why am I telling you all this? Because Garak and Bashir have a very interesting dynamic. Firstly, there is not one instance of Bashir calling Garak "Elim". Garak calls him "Doctor Bashir" or the classic "my dear Doctor".
Now when we imagine Garak telling Julian how he actually doesn't like him (at all!) and then he says "ok bye. Julian. wink wink 😉" I don't really know if it would feel out of character for Garak. Damn, somebody get Andrew Robinson on the phone and pay him to say it.
If Garak does it slowly with a thick, chocolady sarcastic tone and smirk, I think it would work. But it would also make him VERY vulnerable, no matter how he tries to overplay it. Which would be an interesting scene, to say the least. So it would have the need to feel earned.
It would also be an interesting callback to early twink Bashir, hopelessly in need of human(oid) connection. He forcefeeds Kira the "HEY KIRA I'M JULIAN CALL ME JULIAN! SAY IT!!! JUUUUUUUUULIAN!" stuff very early on. At the end of the Julian and the Federation Ambassadors-Episode, they respect him and call him Julian.
So Garak denying him that indulgence is an interesting trait. And if you're still reading this with me, maybe you agree on that. It's important to notice how our characters adress each other.
Garak denies Julian the un-formality of the first name (what Julian desperately craves), and would propably be shocked or even angry in return, if Julian himself called him "Elim".
What I'm saying it, it would be a big deal. Closing a speech with "Julian" could break that delicate balance and dynamic. Maybe it would work. Maybe it wouldn't.
I would love to hear what Siddig or Andrew think about the question. Or anyone other than the voices debating this in my head. Do you have other examples for this?

watching ds9 is great for many reasons, not least because sometimes i set my netflix to subtitles in my language when watching it with my family.
and as ever the translators have fascinating formal pronouns opinions. namely:
bashir and garak use the formal address (with the addendum that julian uses the formal-you directly. and garak of course says doctor a lot, which is extra-formal. interestingly, he doesn't always address him by title only! less diffident than it might have been.)
bashir and o'brien use the formal address (works very well with the development of their friendship + vr funny and tongue in cheek, it's great)
odo and kira use the formal address, up to and including during love declarations (as of season 3)
kira and o'brein do NOT use the formal address. baffling choice ngl. i think it's the only case when the ops team is informal w one another. i think the translator ships it guys.
sisko is formal all the time. except with jake i think. actually i can't remember if jake uses the informal w his dad. i'm pretty sure he does.
quark and rom use the informal!! which is quite interesting in terms of characterization. they are brothers!! it does a lot to set the tone.
quark and odo use the formal form in words but not in spirit, it's hilarious.
odo actually uses the formal with everyone.
dax and bashir use the formal.
even dax and sisko use the formal, including in private. this is the one thing i fully disagree with but it does add an interesting layer to their connection.
kira and dax use the formal. i don't even ship it that much but i will be honest, the formal-you is very gay here, as it can be. if you've been there you've been there.
i think kira and vedek bareil used the formal you! which is a normal thing to do with your boyfriend the religious figure i'm sure.
anyway i am choosing to incorporate all of this into my canon. standard has formal and informal addresses, as per my dodgy netflix translation. will update this post as it becomes funny.

when I see you youngins talking about watching (old) star trek for the first time in 2024, my eyes water and my old creaky knees ache like they did back in the war, because I am overwhelmed by the idea that someday you will look upon a new generation re-discovering Star Trek in twenty or so years, and you'll know the same feeling of joy and kinship that all star trek fans share when star trek finds its home in a new era, resonating in strange new ways.
ds9 fans of the 90s would certainly be baffled by how ds9 fans in 2024 engage with one another. but maybe some wouldn't be. some people always liked garashir or always thought dax was trans. and that quark and odo were in a healthy toxic psychosexual situationship. just as you can read novels from the 18th century and still feel a swelling of recognition in your heart, even though you are centuries apart, I'd like to imagine, star trek has the staying power, and maybe humans will always have the need for an optimistic future where we made it, where people are taken care of, and we flew to the stars.
and if the human race survives this century, and if culture and society and the way we tell stories has changed in ways we cannot even comprehend right now, i'd still like to think there would be at least one weirdo out there, who might stumble upon star trek, become obsessed with this ancient ass, perhaps forgotten show, and create a small but passionate fringe group of weirdos who avidly share theories and analyses, write alternate versions of episodes they watched.
and it'll have truly returned to its roots, by way of reaching to the stars.

As a vocal Star Trek fan, it occurs to me that at this point, I haven't actually seen most Star Trek.
I've rewatched every TOS and TNG episode 20 times. And all the (pre-reboot) movies. (I saw that first Abrams movie and...no. No thanks.) But beyond that? I've only seen a handful of DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise episodes. And what I heard about Discovery made me mad. And the two episodes of Picard I saw made me madder. Lower Decks seemed okay for 15 minutes but I never gave it a chance.
My point is, I am a fake old man Star Trek fan, and while that's an okay thing to be...I feel bad about it.
Why do I know more lore from wikis than actual shows? That's weird. I should at least give all this other Trek a chance.
So I swallowed my bile and got the Paramount+ app. It's free for a week, plus it's still cheaper for Premium than other similar apps. And this way I can at least shotgun a sample of these and see what I've been missing. I hear this Brave New Worlds thing is good.
But I'm starting with DS9. It premiered in 1993, when I was 11. I didn't really care about Trek then, and when I got into TOS and TNG in high school, I didn't move on to DS9, because "they're stuck on a space station, this is a bunch of boring soap opera crap."
Even after seeing several episodes and liking the characters, I remained sure that my initial impression was correct.
So I'm watching Emissary, Part 1, atm.
Tumblr media
This is immediately great. Writing and acting are a little rough, compared to what comes later (based on what I actually know of this show). But being that this is a new show being new, that's to be expected.
This is AWESOME. Everyone hates everyone, and no one wants to be here. Besides Bashir, and he's a creep and an idiot. Sisko hates Picard because Picard killed his wife, and Picard hates Sisko because Sisko is being a total dick about this. Quark is basically a hostage, Odo is a fascist, Kira wants to kill everyone, including most other Bajorans. And Dax is a 300 yo slug, not taking anything seriously, and cracking wise inside of a young woman's body that you know the slug will TOTALLY exploit sexually. Sisko is a Federation human with an obvious atheistic bent, and he's been on this ruined station for like an hour when some Bajoran holy-woman he doesn't care about tells him he's Alien Jesus. And he is NOT COOL with this. But too bad, dude.
This is everything Roddenberry never wanted Star Trek to be...and that's why it's perfect. This place is a shithole and everyone on it is a jackass. And yet it feels 100% Star Trek, because they're careful about how they do it. Like they actually get the heart and soul of the IP and are trying to do something both new AND traditional, at the same time.
It actually has real TOS vibes. I never got that before. It feels like The Cage, like there's a progressive underpinning, but also, what the hell are all these stupid aliens up to, will yelling fix it? No? ...What about more yelling?
I never saw these episodes of this. Maybe it gets boring later on?
Let's find out.

now that i'm awake again, some thoughts on the final bit of ds9...:
- big fan of kira and odo's endings. they r so sweet. wasn't too sold on odo returning to the link but i do think it fits the empathy he learns to have throughout the series - though idk. wish the implication wasn't "i'm returning to where i SHOULD be" like your blood family doesn't define you my sweet goop...
- i do really love the final scene with sisko and kasidy. they're so tender... uuuu
- rom nagus. sure? it's a cute resolution... i love quark telling him he loves him. (also love the interactions quark and vic get in the final stretch, underused dynamic imo). all around big fan of quark's resolution. such a sap
- i do like worf's ending is being finally accepted by the klingons but still connected to the people he was raised by. cute
- the o'briens leaving.. that station is going to break in like 2 days. also the way miles leaving was portayed like a breakup between him and bashir is immensely funny to me but it Does make me sad. they r friends...
- .......umm. ezri's ending sucks. not gonna lie. but i suppose i was expecting it for a character who gets tossed around for a season with nothing to do and then smushed against a bunch of love interests...! i think j/e is cute in concept but it is just So out of nowhere and forced on ezri's part. it really does feel like a 'reward' for bashir and that's got some gross implications. i think she really should've gone back to trill to get some time to deal with the whole Suddenly host thing or at least have had some final scenes with the siskos!!! that was her best friend!!! would she not have some connection to kas or jake... do you remember when jadzia was jake's closest confidant in the visitor... that!!!!! or something!!!! i dont know man.
- bashir's ending is Okay, could be a bit better. once again j/e's execution is Ass. i don't mind him staying on the station (though i do think there'd be a few more places he'd be more urgently needed in considering his talent etc etc) - i've seen a lot of people place him on cardassia post ending but i'm not sure i'm the biggest fan of that either? i dont know what i wouldve done with him either LOL
- garak's ending felt pretty impersonal, wish he'd gotten to have one last scene on ds9 closing down his shop or getting a drink with the crew (considering how close he grew to some of these people in the end) but well can't win 'em all. there's always the novel to read!
- sisko was doomed from the start and i knew that but Uouuu. ow.
- the finale was great except for the very last bit - the fire caves & sisko's final confrontation with dukat felt really tacked on at the end. i wish they'd fought a bit more or something. dukat having immediate controlling powers makes the scene lose a lot of tension and i wish there'd been more of a struggle/more time to flesh that scene out! it really does feel like sisko just Shows up and he disappears again. i guess i got my fill with Waltz but i would've expected... More with dukat's ending. also kira should have absolutely been there to maybe witness sisko's sacrifice i think. she should've insisted on going along and getting to see dukat finally get his just desserts. etc. i have thoughts
- i think that is all i can muster up rn. Nog promotion..... kira station commander...... its peak
- rip to the goat damar. and weyoun. funniest motherfuckers on that show

What Jellycat Plushies Would Each DS9 Crew Member have?
why? why not? (basically just my headcanons of these)
BASHIR - Now, Bashir is going first because he's really only one of two main officers I can see owning these on their own accord. Bashir would 100% pick the rainbow (for obvious reasons), but also because it's bright and cheerful, and lightens up the DS9 cabins.
Tumblr media
DAX - Dax, like Bashir, I can also see loving Jellycats. She'd have quite the collection, and I imagine she'd have a fun time picking them out as gifts. Her favorite would definitely be the dragon, both because it's awesome, as well as obnoxiously large (20 in).
Tumblr media
KIRA - Kira would have a ladybug, just because.
Tumblr media
SISKO - He'd definitely have the sun, probably because it's space-related but also cheerful. This may be a gift from Dax, and she'd probably get a kick out of his reaction. (He'd roll his eyes, but still love it)
Tumblr media
ODO - Odo would have this little clementine fellow. He'd just sorta appear one day, and sits on the edge of Odo's desk (much to Quark's dismay, who resorts to making remarks about how similar they look).
Tumblr media
WORF - Now, I was waffling between two potential Worf reactions to the Jellycat situation. 1.) He'd be pleasantly amused by them, likely because Dax is so fond of them, so he has to at least put up with them, too. 2.) He'd be completely unnerved by them, so much so that Dax begins hiding a single plush everywhere that he visits, just to scare him (which works). The civil response (1) is represented by the plum, who Worf would get along with. The fear response (2), is none other than the egg.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MILES - Miles would get a Jellycat as a gift, and not really know what to do with it. Maybe Molly would suggest bringing him to work, but one way or another Miles would grow to love the little guy, and start talking to him about power conduits and the shield generator.
Tumblr media
KEIKO - Keiko would just adore Jellycats, especially all the botany ones (Bonsai, Orchid, etc.) I picked the daffodil just because it seemed like what Molly would pick for her, too!
Tumblr media
GARAK - A gift from Bashir, because he "has his eyes" <3
Tumblr media
QUARK - I imagine Quark would be the one selling all these, so he'd have to have an example of the merchandise, right? (at least, that's what he keeps saying...)
Tumblr media
Sorry for my rambling, anyways, hope you can tell I just adore jellycats <3

ST Dialogue Analysis – Who's the Most/Least Used Character
okay this will be the last post in my dialogue analysis series (for now!)
if you want to check out the whole project look at my tag #star trek dialogue analysis, this spreadsheet, or the below posts:
overview // TOS overview // TNG overview // DS9 overview // Voyager overview // Enterprise overview // gender analysis // race analysis
i started this project because i wanted to actually answer the question: "who's the most & best used Star Trek character" (and conversely who's the least/worst used character) i've come up with four ways to answer the question: average lines of dialogue, total lines of dialogue, most high line count episodes, and least low line count episodes.
average lines of dialogue is pretty self-explanatory and is the metric i use for most of this project as it controls for how many episodes each show has (i.e. Archer is measured as having more of a presence than Picard despite having fewer episodes).
total lines of dialogue is also pretty self-explanatory and unlike the average, this will be weighted towards the shows that have more episodes and characters that appear in more seasons.
high line count episodes is a bit more subjective as i measured every episode where a character has 80 or more lines of dialogue. i picked this number kind of at random after looking at some of the raw data but this cut-off seems to have identified which episodes characters appear heavily in and most characters have at least one focal episode.
low line count episodes function similarly to the high line count episodes as i looked for every episode where a character has 10 or fewer lines. again, this number was picked subjectively so take it with a grain of salt.
okay. under the cut we have. a lot of lists.
average lines of dialogue
1. Kirk (115.2) 2. Archer (86.68) 3. Janeway (69.81) 4. Picard (69.37) 5. Spock (57.72) 6. Sisko (50.72) 7. Tucker (46.03) 8. T'Pol (44.02) 9. Riker (42.21) 10. Seven (40.88) 11. Ezri (38.31) 12. rebecca watches ds9: melora
oh god I’ve heard about this episode. oh god julian’s gonna violate medical ethics
goddamn ableist cardassians
julian you haven’t even met her yet and you’re already in love. that’s unhinged
ok they’ve met over voice chat at least
guess this was their Very Special Episode
girl you’re an ensign! why would you be allowed to go on a mission alone!
my dad just said “what a bitch!” i think he’s being unfair though
that’s a lot of gold-pressed latinum
oh what the fuck is that guy
quark what have you gotten yourself into now
quark what did you do to this guy
well that’s very straightforward!
why is melora’s hair like that
“i prefer to work alone” girl you’re in starfleet!
julian, whatever you’re doing, stop
he enters the room and immediately goes like “so are you single???”
“i’m not your doctor anymore” alright, so ig it’s ok to fuck
dad is bewildered at the concept of a klingon restaurant. i’m just wondering what they eat aside from gagh
quark is pulling out all the stops to get this guy to not kill him. somehow i doubt this plan will work
i wonder what melora and this guy are saying
alright! the lady knows what she wants
new julian lore! his father is a diplomat
and he played tennis! bro is just doing it all
tng had the dancing doctor and now we have the tennis-playing doctor
man poor melora :(
she really knows what she wants! outright asks julian to come in. you know what, good for her
low-gravity romance scene! idk if that’s a Thing in sci-fi but it should be
melora, floating with this hot guy: btw i’m single
god i love jadzia so much
wait i want to know more about those people who didn’t even breathe the same air and were together for 57 years
ig that scene prolly felt different when everyone and their mother wasn’t in an ldr
god i played fnv and now i can only hear mr house lmao
ah so that’s why this guy wants quark dead
odo hates that he can’t let quark die lmao
god i love when they technobabble
there’s gonna be a catch. there’s always a catch
odo will buy quark after he dies. nicest thing he’s ever said to him no doubt
ok, it seems good, now where’s the catch
oof, guess it doesn’t last long
ohhh, so she has to choose between floating and walking
something tells me she’s gonna choose floating
the little mermaid! yes!!!
melora was like “did she live happily ever after?” and my mom, who’s sitting on the couch doing the crossword, went “no, she died”
guess she’s a regular 24th-century ariel! choose between one world with her home, and another with love
i have no idea what’s going on with quark but i know it’s not good
melora no!
oh fuck yes melora!! get his ass!!!!!
why is the klingon singing
alright people exaggerated how bad julian was in this ep. i mean yeah he’s her doctor but hes everyone’s doctor so unless we want him to die alone we gotta let him break the rules a teeny bit
i’m surprised they were still getting on well at the end of the ep though, she’s a one-off so i figured they’d break up
ig they’ll break up offscreen

Weyoun 6 Survives AU
Odo has to make Weyoun 6 a deputy bc then at least he's being useful while shadowing Odo.
Odo sends him to have lunch with Bashir and Garak to get him out of his hair. He is quickly banned from having lunch with them by Bashir and Garak.
He's very weird about Laas.
Ezri is the only one who attempts to be friendly with him.
Is not allowed in Kira's room, sleeps on the floor just outside the door when Odo visits her.
Gets in trouble for biting someone on the Promenade.
Quark recruits him to taste all the alcohol he imports to check for poisons/impurities.
Would make a genuinely really fun time for everyone in Bashir's spy programs when joining Odo for the group outings. No one want's to admit he was more fun to play with than Odo's ever been.

Star Trek couples ranked by how awkward it would be to third-wheel with them for an evening out:
Wouldn’t be awkward and you’d probably have a good time: Deanna and Will, Sisko and Kasidy, Saru and T’Rina
Wouldn’t be too bad, but you’d feel a little left out every time they laughed at an inside joke or told a convoluted story from their past: Kes and Neelix, Hugh and Paul
They’d end up talking together the whole evening and forget about you, but at least it wouldn’t get weird: Kira and Odo, Jadzia and Lenara, Michael and Book
They’d end up talking together the whole evening and forget about you, and also things would probably get weird: Quark and Grilka, Mariner and Jennifer, T’Ana and Shaxs
Could be very fun or extremely awkward depending on how well you got along with one particular member of the couple: Jadzia and Worf, Deanna and Worf, Keiko and Miles
There would be so, so many awkward silences and you’d probably feel embarrassed to be there: Picard and Beverly, Rom and Leeta, Kira and Bareil, Michael and Ash
There’s a high chance they’d get into an argument in front of you and then awkwardly try to tone it down and absolutely nobody would be having a good time: B’Elanna and Tom, Worf and K'Ehleyr, Seven and Raffi, Spock and T’Pring (SNW)
The whole evening would be filled with an inexplicable vibe of extreme discomfort with no discernible cause and you’d want to get out of there immediately: Julian and Ezri, Seven and Chakotay, Spock and Chapel (SNW)

After the last Romulan ask I can't help but to imagine an Andorian and a Romulan becoming reluctant friends during the Domion war...like a 'your ancestors probably burned down my ancestors colony but you fight good and at least you're not Vulcan'
You know, I could see it. Though, hopefully, by the time we hit the Dominion War the worst of the interspecies tensions would be eased by long familiarity, I think there will always be some friendly - and sometimes not-so-friendly - ribbing between Andorians and Vulcans. Still, it's hard to say what a one-on-one interaction between a Romulan and an Andorian would look like. Much would depend on the individuals themselves, and the circumstances. I feel like a Quark-and-Odo-esque survival scenario with an Andorian and a Romulan could be an interesting read!

What made you guys decide to write Worf as crossing the picket line btw? Was it just that you needed someone to and he was the most likely character? Also you didn't mention Garak... I think he wouldn't have crossed, since he grew up in the Space GDR so he likely believed all the propaganda about how good the state was to the workers etc. and distrusted Quark's way of doing things. Or maybe I'm being too nice. Maybe it would've been Bashir threatening to cancel lunch that week that convinced him
Worf seemed, of all our characters, to be the one that would most likely side with a business owner's rights to dictate employment conditions to his employees. To him that seems like freedom (for the owner) and lawful behavior (rules are rules). A strike, to someone like Worf (or Odo) who values order, is a chaotic, unnecessary mess.
It was also a good way to put him in conflict with the rest of our characters.
As for Garak, yes, he grew up in the Space GDR, but he also generally believed in the Space GDR. Obeying a superior's dictates, no matter how unreasonable, is the Cardassian way. At least publicly. So he probably wouldn't have supported the strike. Unless there was an advantage in it for him, and then his support would have probably involved skullduggery more than publicly honoring a picket line.
Of course, if pressured by his favorite doctor, and/or an authority figure like Sisko or Kira, he'd probably act differently.
