Black Magic stuff.
I checked my local classifieds and found a rabbit hole. For old people like me the name Dalhquist conjures up a classic speaker from the 1970s. (Yes, sorry, I got thinking about speakers).
There is a DQ-10 listed for not very stupid money. There are several unique aspects to that model. One is the design target was to match or better the sound of an electrostatic speaker the QUAD 57 which is still famous in the vintage speaker world. That is a lofty target renowned for excellent mid-range and imaging. Weirdly the golden ears of the day think Mr Dahlquist did it, using conventional cone and dome drivers and a complex cross-over network. Many basic assumptions of conventional design were thrown away. New ones invented.
Tumblr media
This is from the ad in Craigslist. A nice set in good shape.
One aspect of the voice of the thing was relatively weak Bass. Though compared to the QUAD target it was excellent. My rabbit hole was how did the cross over work and could it be improved? So I looked for a schematic.
Tumblr media
Found one! And WTF!
The DQ-10 was famous for being power hungry. If you know far less than I do about circuits you will see that in the Bass and mid-bass drivers about half the power is thrown away in resistors. The two drivers are in series for FN sake. Just looking at that section serious improvements can be made. There are many extra lengths of fine coiled wire isolating the woofer from the amplifier. That is a bad thing. Want better bass, fix that!
I think this design was done before the formulas for proper enclosure design were developed and well before simulators for passive cross overs were invented. (Hell before personal computers were invented.) It was done by fiddling and testing and more fiddling. Old school black magic.
There are people who overhaul and upgrade these by replacing old capacitors with new and using heavy gauge wire, but they keep the sacred circuit with all its flaws intact.
I start to think I should buy this thing and do a cross over the right way. Thinking for me is dangerous. Very dangerous.
The downside is my listening room is really too small to accommodate these things. What I would gain from the mental stimulus of "scientific fiddling" would be countered by hostile wife "why are you wasting this money" effects. Then could I get my money back selling the thing on?
Also I traditionally keep my speaker designs simple. Two way or Three way with an occasional super tweeter I cant hear anyway. Simple is well simple and allows easy control of factors. The DQ10 is a FIVE WAY design. That is FN complex. A new efficient cross over would upset the balance a bit, but that is fixable. A resistor here and there would suffice. Or even substitution of a driver or two. OK now you are getting expensive.
Hey why not take the idea and start from scratch and build my own version. That makes more sense. That saves the money to buy this thing! This is the point my rabbit hole bottoms out.
I start getting rational. My stealth two way speakers are better. Just better. They are smaller and simpler and have amazing bass and imaging. They are simple and used up-to-date calculations for the box and the cross-over.
Calm down. Put on a record. Save money and don't bother.

the curse of trawling online ubernerd communities for advice about buying shit is that it always opens up into a thousand little rabbit holes of supplemental research you have to fall down before you can even take their advice. like I just got a new computer monitor and I had to learn about IPS vs VA panels and freesync and blooming and smearing and who knows what else. and now I need speakers to match but all the audiophile groups are just like "if you can't get a dedicated subwoofer you might as well kill yourself"

Last Monday of the Week 2023-12-11
la baguette, etc.
EDIT: god damn this got longer than I expected
Listening: I almost exclusively listened to Against Me! during this trip for some reason. On Saturday night my metro got interrupted and I got kicked out a few kilometers from my hotel, and after watching a couple full busses skip my stop, I just walked back. I put on Black Crosses for the first time, which is a combination of demos and acoustic versions of the songs from White Crosses which is probably one of my favourite punk albums.
I can't listen to some of Against Me! without having a good bad time because of Memories but I do not have that issue with White Crosses. As far as the demo/acoustic versions go, they are much lighter than the mainline releases which is bad if you want something energetic but good if you kind of want to soak in the lyrics.
There's a lot of great ones on Black Crosses including the obvious ones like Spanish Moss and The Western World but the one that really got me while walking back was the acoustic version of Because of the Shame which is positively heartbreaking when given space like this.
Reading: I fell down a rabbit hole on delta-sigma conversion while doing simultaneous reading up on 32-bit float audio and what the hell DSD is. I will reverse explanations.
Delta-Sigma is a collection of techniques used, roughly, to convert between high-sample-rate, low-bit-depth data and low-sample-rate, high-bit-depth data. A delta-sigma audio analogue-digital converter might sample a low-pass-filtered version of incoming signal at 6MHz and 1-2 bits and use that to reconstruct a 16-bit 44kHz version of the signal. Thanks to nyquist and other various equivalences this works with basically zero quantization error if you chose your filters right.
I was familiar with this from class-D amplifiers, which are effectively delta-sigma digital-analogue conversion, which reproduces a low-frequency analogue signal by feeding a pulse-density encoded chain into an amplifier and a low pass filter.
Anyway, DSD is a silly audiophile brand name for an audio codec that stores the 1-bit pulse encoded form of an audio signal rather than storing traditional PCM audio. Fundamentally if your hardware is correct there's basically no difference in information content or density between them.
This led me to these two good articles on dithering and delta-sigma architecture, among others.
Watching: I stumbled across this ongoing good series on YouTube a few weeks ago discussing trends in marketing movies as being "no CGI" when they are absolutely the fuck not. The second part just came out, but here's part 1:
youtube
"No CGI" is always a ridiculous claim in basically any modern movie, but this is a really good breakdown of how a combination of irresponsible journalism and intentionally poor communication creates the impression that tons of incredibly effects heavy movies are actually "free of CGI".
Treating computer graphics and effects as some kind of scourge is a misled reflex. It reminds me a lot of backlash against pitch correction, because in most cases people do not realize how much pitch correction is used in basically all music you hear. Big artists playing live performances are even pitch corrected in real time these days.
It's just part of the business, and in a very parallel way, people expect the output of CGI/pitch correction even if they don't know that. If P!nk were to go out on stage and sing her music without pitch correction you'd hear the effects of her ridiculously energetic acts, and people would bitch about it because as evidenced by people who describe good sounding music systems as feeling "like live music", people don't know what live music sounds like! Live music sounds like crap compared to studio production, you're there to inhale six different kinds of cigarette and get hit in the chest by a drunk girl who isn't paying attention to where she's going.
Wow I have a lot of opinions about how people don't realize how much production is in things. This should probably be a post. Later. Hey this is like guys who talk about "no makeup" look-*I AM YANKED OFFSTAGE WITH A COMICALLY OVERSIZED SHEPHERD'S CROOK*.
Playing: Nothing really! Dark Souls stalled not because I'm stuck but because I was doing other things. Making block took up a lot of time.
Making: Hacked together a very basic proof of concept for inserting my own controller into an LED string. As encouraged by definitely unbiased user @compiler-specific I am going to try and write my own DSL for this, which will probably end up resembling a lisp just because that simplifies my life.
Also almost done with hambanner, an IRC ban management bot. I would have finished that if I was not. In Paris. over the weekend. Hopefully this week.
Tools and Equipment: Sometimes you will find that your phone is dead and you need to find your way back to your hotel in a bizzarely convoluted part of La Défense late at night. And at this time you will be grateful that you took the time to orient yourself relative to local streets and the river and the metro station so that you do not have to find a corner to charge your phone and can instead just get back to your hotel. It could happen to you.

I went down the rabbit hole of r/DigitalAudioPlayer (mainly audiophiles but also people running away from streaming) earlier this month and now own a Hiby M300 and Tangzu Wan'er IEMs and have started re-ripping all my CDs to be in FLAC. But also there's a bunch of cheap DAPs that only play music (but will play a variety of formats bc mp3 sucks for quality, honestly) and others seem to like modding old iPods so options are out there! Plus the storage capacity can hit 1 TB if you get one with expandable storage.
(also the wild difference I've heard between my ripped copy of brat vs the Spotify stream is 🤩)
I hate when I say things like "oh I want an ipod classic but with bluetooth so I can use wireless headphones" and some peanut comes in and replies with "so a smartphone with spotify?" No. I want a 160GB+ rectangular monstrosity where I can download every version of every song I want to it and it does nothing except play music and I don't need a data connection and don't have to pay a subscription to not have ads and don't have popups suggesting terrible AI playlists all over the menus.
Gimme the clicky wheel and song titles like "My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade- Blood (Bonus Track)- secret track- album rip- high quality"

pro tip: don't fall for audiophile nonsense
"Hi-Res" audio is a meme. I know this sounds like the "cinematic FPS" argument but your ears are literally incapable of hearing greater than 16-bit 48kHz audio.
breaking it down, first the 48kHz part: digital audio is stored in samples, which is a measure of the amplitude at a single point in time. the sample rate is how frequently the signal is sampled, forming our digital sound. and thanks to the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem, which dictates that any band-limited signal can be represented perfectly with digital samples taken at twice it's frequency, for the human limit of 20kHz, 48kHz is actually more than enough as it can encode a signal up to 24kHz
as for the 16-bit part, that dictates the dynamic range of the audio, in other words, the difference between the loudest signal a format can reproduce compared to the quietest one when it starts blending in with noise
16-bit audio, with proper dither and correct encoding, has a practical 120dB of dynamic range, which is "greater than the difference between a mosquito somewhere in the same room and a jackhammer a foot away". you don't need 24-bit audio, although it doesn't hurt, unlike >48kHz audio (see this excellent post about how ultrasonics can lead to distortion on most gear, actively hurting sound quality, by Chris Montgomery, founder of xiph.org, the foundation behind the FLAC, Vorbis and Opus audio codecs, so you can know for damn sure he knows more about digital audio than most of us combined)
don't spend extra for hi-res files and such. They're really only useful if you're a producer, as the extra data helps you keep good quality while mixing your track.
And for the love of god don't fall into the MQA snake oil rabbit hole, it's lossy and the "origami" bullshit they're peddling adds distortion and artifacts to the file, and they went bankrupt recently so that just shows how good their product is
Don't confuse this with an excuse to listen to the shittiest 128kbps mp3s straight out of Napster, lossy vs lossless codecs is a different subject altogether (hint: just get the FLACs, but beware your bluetooth buds can't do lossless)
TL;DR just get good gear, a humble 16/44 FLAC file, and enjoy mathematically perfect music
(and later watch these amazing videos by Chris from earlier going over this much better than i ever could)
and please don't take anything i've said at face value, i'm no expert, do your own research!! that is the magic the internet enables you to do
wow an actual informative post on my trash blog go me

technology. regresses lol
so i like music right?
like everyone likes music totally lol
but i was getting annoyed that 1) my phone doesnt have space since im constantly in gacha hell and 2) playing music kills the phone battery esp when im out like walking or traveling and stuff
and, obviously im not doing this stuff now since im back home and covid is a thing and all, but when i did travel, it was usually alone. plus since my college was in the city + my internship was in the city, so i was traveling alone by bus (bc no drivers license and/or car) + i think a guy attempted to mug me once and also i think i was like followed or something once or twice during the frickin afternoon in broad daylight in the city while traveling for my internship and stuff???????????
like. a phone with a low battery or a dead phone is uhhhhhh. not good.
anyways i decided to suck it up and spend $40 on this 3rd party chinese mp3 the mibao which got listed consistently on a bunch of “top mp3 players for 2020/2021″ kind of lists for like. amateur audiophiles. lol.
honestly i was like seconds away from buying this other one but i didnt last second because it doesnt show lyrics which is gross bc i love reading lyrics (its also the hoh stuff lol)
anyways ive fallen down the rabbit hole of amateur audiophiles/regressing back to having an mp3 player (altho ive actually always had one since like the 2nd grade but i cant find it?? (i swear its in my room somewhere (ipod nano 4th gen plz return to my hand even tho youre like 10+ years old and also your battery lasts for like 5 minutes before dying bc ive loved/used you too much lol))) / converting m4a to mp3 / syncing lyrics bc m4a doesnt play well with 3rd party mp3 players and the lyrics were never synced anyways lololol.
so im using minilyrics and like i decided to make an account for their connected site https://www.viewlyrics.com/ so i could upload lyrics/.txt/.LRC files and timestamps for funsies (and to be polite or whatever. internet manners sharing and all) but when i go on there its totally blank? lol, idk why tho. esp since when i played popular songs that people have already made and uploaded lyrics for, they showed up??? like is the site itself dead or blank but the actual site’s data on some server out there that automatically shares/is active??? or something????
man. one of the songs i tested out to see if lyrics were already made were the sore feet song, which someone already made bc it was the opening song of mushishi. like. ok, that anime’s from, what? 2002? 2005? sure it sounds like the website could’ve been active back then, sure.
but then the second song i tested was the tokyo ghoul theme song kisetsu wa tsugitsugi shindeiku and like. someone actually uploaded lyrics?? they automatically came to me??? that anime came out like idk 2015-2016 or something right? was the site up back then? or is the site just blank and badly working for me??????????
how? why? lol
anyways for funsies for songs that i will sync lyrics to, ill put the lyrics timestamps here as regular text after uploading them (even tho i cant even see them on the website?)

If you get this, answer with 3 random facts about yourself and send it to the last 7 blogs in your notifications, anonymously or not! Let’s get to know the person behind the blog ❤️
AAA thank you!!! :O
1-I’m not an audiophile but I fucking love the tech audiophiles come up with; Apparently there is a market for people to throw away $3-4,000 on an audio player and it’s wild. I just like the tech itself, don’t really care much about the audio quality-i think it’s neat :O (Hell I’m falling down the rabbit hole as I spent $40 for a used FiioM6 which is worth $130+? the SD card slot doesn’t work, can’t repair it as I hoped I would be able to, it didn’t come with a charger, is smaller than my already small hand, and the firmware is android but I love it it’s my baby)
2. I can crochet (as some people might be able to guess!) and have been since I was in middle school-(so about 9 years? Wow) But I never completed a project until quarantine made me do it sjldkf the first project I Have ever completed is this octopus for my brother and I’ve been making more projects since then!! (I am aware of the mistakes but to be fair it was the first thing i completed and I like to think I got better with my other ones sdfjl) Currently now making these avocado face cloths for my sister. Hoping I can making dethklok dolls soon because sometimes you gotta make the merch you’ve wanted sdfj 3. I’ve been drinking coffee since I was 9 and I am now 45% legally coffee- I didn’t drink it as much until I started middle school and I started drinking coffee daily when i Began high school but I love it and it’s always been comforting to me;;; (And i’m pretty sure I drank like over...150 cups of coffee since March when quarantine started for me as I use these coffee packets you’d find at a korean market since they’re fucking amazing sdfljk)

I have further information relevant to the cause.
The PS2 manual states:
"This game uses both Dolby Digital and PCM Audio." I haven't found any specifics because for some reason mid-00s audiophiles weren't talking about Shadow the Hedgehog, but from reading around discussions of OTHER games, it sounds like this means in most cases that only the cutscenes were rendered in surround and everything else in PCM stereo. Gameplay is probably not surround sound. Manual below.
Tumblr media
Now, I decided to look up the other version manuals. Console war geeks in the early 00s were posting about the superior Xbox360 sound capabilities specifically in that it supports surround sound in-game. And promisingly, the Xbox manual for this game states "this game is presented in Dolby Digital." There aren't any caveats and it says to experience the excitement of surround sound. Now that's not to say it might not still switch to stereo and still use the Dolby standard but it's a little more optimistically worded? Manual below.
Tumblr media
Finally, GameCube is looking similar to PS2. "This game is PARTLY presented in Dolby Pro Logic II." - notice the PARTLY. That caveat isn't there in the Xbox version. Manual below.
Tumblr media
I am so, so desperate to test all 3 versions now. It's a shame that if I'd gone down this rabbit hole 2 years ago I could probably have gotten all 3 copies for less than the price a single copy is going for right now due to eBay bot price algorithm confusion.
I'm REALLY hoping that at least the Xbox version has surround sound in gameplay. I just think it would be the stupidest greatest shit to hear explosions behind me in this game. Please...
...also, if any of you own a copy of this game on any system, I will pay for the price of having it shipped to me for this experiment and I will return it after no more than 2 months. I'm desperate 😔🙏
Obsessive thought I cannot get out of my brain:
- Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) has a 5.1 surround output option on PS2
- I have this ancient TV tuner from like the late 80s with surround output capability
Tumblr media
So like, here is the thing about me. I don't care for surround sound. I think it has its place in cinema but mostly surround sound mixes make me feel overstimulated and I hate them.
The other thing about me, however, is that I'm obsessed with old technology and also Shadow the Hedgehog (2005).
Do you see where I'm going with this.
I wish to experience Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) in 5.1, baby. HOWEVER. It will be the shittiest 5.1 you've ever seen in your life because I'm not about to drop hundreds on doing this legit style. We are doing this jank style.
TOOLS NEEDED:
5 speakers and a subwoofer. Now the speakers are supposed to all be identical but fuck that we doing this the cheapo way. I don't have a subwoofer so I think I'm going to go this route:
- use the stereo output on my CRT TV as the front left/right speakers
- use my studio monitors as the rear left/right speakers (they're already placed there and are annoying to move)
- use the pair of pretty good listening speakers I have as the 5th speaker and subwoofer. Note: these are not bassy speakers so it will be the shittiest subwoofer of all time but I don't care.
(I may swap these around as makes sense if I do try this out. Considering ditching the subwoofer and using the CRT as a mono front speaker, and the listening speakers as side left/right speakers.)
RESEARCH NEEDED:
Confirm compatibility between the Pro Logic II 5.1 surround setup and my TV tuner. Confirm whether the optical output used for surround sound on the PS2 is also available in my backwards compatible PS3. Confirm what cabling is required including any cable converters for speakers that don't take optical.
I will report back if I can be bothered to follow through on this research. Wish me luck

Had another go.
Still liked it.
While it was running I fired up my alternate laptop and dug around. This Mofi has a serial number and is listen as "limited edition". I was looking for any information about how many were made. No joy.
I did find some "experts" slagging all Mofi issues as bad. Everyone on the internet is an expert. Another rabbit hole. This reminded me of that used record dealer that buys old records in bulk and finds "the good ones." They hate 180 gram LPs and 1/2 speed masters and all Mofi. Those are the things I like.
This one guy shared a similar opinion about this Dire Straits album, but I find it really weird.
I assume they are being honest and expressing what they really believe, but is it the LP they play or the system they use that disappoints? I tracked down much of what the "hot Stamper" people use to audition their catch. I could only identify the speakers and the turntable with a moving coil cartridge. They hid the identity of the preamp, and amplifier. They claim their system is excellent and neutral. But they do say the amplifier is 35 Watts and imply it is a tuber.
I am very sorry, but probably no 35 Watt tube amps are truly neutral. ARC probably makes about the most neutral amp in that range. It is the baby brother to mine which is, sorry to say, with a definite voice. The Dynaco St 70 is not at all neutral. I do not care what mods it may have.
I think if they make such pronouncements and judgements they should disclose the full system they use. I think that a system with a particular voice will make some records sound better than otherwise better records.
I have heard a lot of high end systems going back to the golden age of big Magneplanars and ARC tube amps, including those huge Fulton Js. More recently the Wilsons and similar nutty stuff. I have experience and I can appreciate small things. Am I an expert?
Many old pop and rock albums were equalized and compressed to sound good on radio. AM Radio. Play that on a really good system and it can hurt. Play it on a soft and warm system and it is fine. Take that to mean soft and warm is not a "good system" in the greater scheme of things. It is a particular persons preference.
I like black coffee no sugar, but it better be damn good coffee.
To some degree any serious Hi-Fi guy will think their system is a good one, and will only improve when they get that next thing, be it a cable, or a speaker,or whatever. I do that when I see a treasure in the used market. But over 6 odd years I have only bought two pieces of electronic hardware. A preamp and an amplifier. They only made a small difference overall.
I would like to play on a bigger field, but I gotta spend my own money and most of that goes to living costs. There are a lot of possible treasures in the used market right now.
So my Brothers in Arms still sounds good. It is well made and I have no issues with it or any Mofi I own. I also played one of my Audiophile issue A&M Supertramp Albums. It sounded good too. I will not let other opinions undermine mine.

Do Headphone Cables Make a Difference? Find Out!
Yes, headphone cables can make a difference in sound quality. However, the impact varies depending on several factors. I’ve been down the rabbit hole of audio equipment, and one question that often pops up is about headphone cables. Do they really matter? It’s a debate that has stirred the audiophile community for years. You see, the type of cable, its material, and its construction can…

Musical Theatre Career
Created for: The Sims 4 by Marduc_Plays
Game Version 1.46.18.1020 Created with Neias Create-A-Career Tool Beta. (so no chance cards, rewards, daily tasks, or work outfits.) In this custom made rabbit hole career with 10 Levels, sims start out as Theatre Employee at "The Dramatic Stage" Musical Theatre Company, and can choose between Musical Star or Theatre Technician as promotion track. Each comes with individual skill sets as objectives. Description: Talking animals, historical characters, and lots of singing, dancing and music. You either love it or hate it - Fact is, a musical needs a lot of jobs to be done right to be successful. From service staff, costume designers and make up artists, to musicians, stage technicians, choreographs and actors, there is enough work for many kinds of talent.
Level 1: Ticket Collector 21$/h Acting school doesn't pay for itself, so you acquired a job at "the dramatic stage" to earn money. Work is dull, but you can make some useful contacts, and watching the musicals is free, when the audience is in. Work: M T W T F - - 2pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 2 Mood: Confident Level 2: Cloakroom Service 29$/h Well, the work is still dull-ish, but here and there you get a tip, which helps out a lot. You also befriended one of the technicians, who lets you take a peek backstage sometimes. Work: M T W T F - - 2pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 3 Charisma 2 Mood: Confident Level 3: Stage Hand 34$/h Taking the opportunity to work as stage hand has pulled the curtain to the magical musical-world aside. It's a lot more of a hurry for everyone as one might expect, to deliver a perfect show. Work: - T W T F S - 2pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 4 Handiness 2 Mood: Focused Level 4: Assistant Stylist 47$/h Good work doesn't go unnoticed, So you now assist in preparing the costumes for getting swapped, and even doing some basic stage-makeup for the cast. The job is fun, but also somewhat demanding. Work: - T W T F S - 2pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 5 Painting 2 Mood: Focused Level 5: Show Extra 66$/h You got the offer to work as show extra. Now you actually work with the cast of the show, sometimes even swapping a friendly word, while jumping in and out of costumes for the next scene. Work: M T - T F S - 2pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 6 Charisma 3 Mood: Inspired Level 6: Choir Member 93$/h As you've been caught red-handed by the stage caller testing the acoustics of the stage by singing a really silly song, you've been transferred to the musical choir. So your singing couldn't have been too bad, Work: M T - T F S - 2pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 7 Charisma 4 Mood: Inspired Track: Musical Actor Acting school really pays off now, as you'll need every ounce of the things you've learned to become successful on stage, but it's still a long way to the top, and you'll still have to train hard in the performing arts to become a celebrated star. Level 7: Understudy 130$/h It's a lot of work, as you're expected to be able to replace different people on demand, but you dig in to it, because it might even mean that you're getting to play one of the important characters, if only for a night. Work: M T W T F - - 2pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 8 Charisma 5 Mood: Inspired Level 8: Supporting Role 182$/h You've got casted for one of the supporting roles, which means after all that work you're finally a regular part of the main cast. You're getting your own small share of fame, giving autographs and getting recognized when you're out and about. Work: - T W - F S - 11am-7pm Objectives: Singing 9 Charisma 6 Mood: Inspired Level 9: Main Actor 273$/h You've got an offer for the main role, the place in the spotlight on stage is finally yours! Your passion for what you're doing bestows you an ever growing fanbase, and the shows are almost always sold out to the last seat. Work: - T W - F S - 4pm-10pm Objectives: Singing 10 Charisma 7 Mood: Inspired Level 10: Musical Star 454$/h Reaching fame on an international level, you get invited to all famous events, partys and tv shows. Everywhere you go you're greeted by the cameras of paparazzis, but the love of your fans makes up for that part of your life. Work: - T W - F S - 4pm-10pm Objectives: - Mood: Inspired Track: Technician People switching lanes from acting to production is not uncommon, as a good part of the musical magic is also happening behind the stage. Inventive technicians make Peter fly, create thunder and lightning without the risk of being electrocuted, and fit enchanted forests inside a building, to take the audience of the show deep down the rabbithole. Level 7: Scene Builder 144$/h You're a crafter of worlds. From medieval castles to shady alleys in SimCity, there's nothing you can't tinker with some wood, plaster and paint. Luckily you don't need to rely on just that, your budget allows for much more, maybe even that giant projection screen... Work: M T W T F - - 11am-7pm Objectives: Handiness 4 Painting 4 Mood: Inspired Level 8: Gaffer 166$/h Lights, Music, Action! Without you, the stage would be pitch black, or even worse, the light could make the actors look sick. You develop and manage the lighting of every scene of the show - even if an actor was sick nobody in the audience would notice it. Work: - T W - F S - 11am-7pm Objectives: Handiness 6 Painting 6 Mood: Inspired Level 9: Sound Engineer 238$/h From music to sound effects, you are in charge of the acoustics of the show and assure that every sung word is heard crystal clear over the new 9.2 surround installation of the theatre - You can't deny that you're a bit of an audiophile. Work: - T W - F S - 4pm-10pm Objectives: Handiness 8 DJ 4 Mood: Inspired Level 10: Creative Director 409$/h You've come the far way from a mere side job to pay your student fees, to the top of the dream factory. Now it's your job to make the magic come true. Working with playwrights and composers, the stage callers and chief technicians of the theatre, hiring cast and staff. Work: - T W - F S - 4pm-10pm Objectives: - Mood: Inspired

"i buy a lot of records, both new and used, and i don’t know if i’ve ever had a record be such bad quality that i would go down this rabbit hole of information (verifiable or not) to avoid it happening in the future. i think you may be speaking far more to the extreme edges of the steve hoffman audiophile world and shooting WAAAY past your average vinyl buyer"

Since the last time we updated this story in February 2022, Spotify has combined albums, compilations, and singles into one location, with an option to separate them. There’s an option on each Artist page to listen to only the songs of theirs you’ve liked, which is a very welcome change from previous years. If you turn on social sharing, you can see what your friends have been listening to and create sessions where a group simultaneously streams a playlist. Spotify lets you add an unlimited number of songs to your personal library, as well, and you can put up to 10,000 in each playlist. That is minus the catalogs of Neil Young, (some of) Joni Mitchell, and others who requested that Spotify remove their songs in protest of Spotify podcaster Joe Rogan’s chronic spreading of Covid misinformation. There are now more than 82 million tracks on Spotify. If you’re looking for lossless, a Spotify HiFi tier is on its way, according to the company, but there’s still no launch date, even a year and a half after it was announced. For $10 a month, the Premium tier ditches ads entirely and streams up to 320 Kbps, which is the standard streaming quality these days.

The free tier, with advertisements, defaults to a low-quality 96-Kbps streaming bit rate, but you can bump it up to 160 Kbps. It led me down rabbit holes to find new artists and old favorites, based on what I’ve already liked and listened to on the app. Spotify has the best music discovery algorithms and the slickest, snappiest user interface. If, however, all your speakers are smart Alexa-enabled speakers, you might want to consider Amazon Music, even if it’s not one of our top personal picks. If you’re planning to splurge on an Apple Music subscription with Dolby Atmos and lossless audio, you will need a pair of Apple-made headphones (to go with your iPhone and HomePod Mini). The devices or phone you own could also affect your ease of use. Lossless formats also require four or five times as much storage space per song.

(I’ll explain lossless audio at the end of this article.) However, if you listen to music while running, with workout headphones or on a Bluetooth speaker, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference. If you listen to live recordings alone, in a quiet room, with a great pair of wired headphones, then you’ll probably want to splurge on lossless audio.

Tyler Hayes has tips for each service at How to Make Your Music Streaming More Social. If all those friends use Spotify, sharing the same platform will make it much easier. You may enjoy music more when you can share the experience with friends. So how do you know if you’re getting the right one-not only the best one, but the one that’s right for you? Here are some factors to consider. However, most people pick a streaming service and stick with it for years and years.

When it comes to listening to music, you can always upgrade your headphones or speaker system. Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day. com and our print magazine (if you’d like). Special offer for Gear readers: Get a 1-year subscription to WIRED for $5 ($25 off). Amazon Music has also gone up in price, and several services have added tens of millions of songs to their catalogs since we lasted updated this article in February 2022. Updated September 2022: Tidal has (again) displaced Apple Music as our audiophile pick, due to audio quality upgrades. Be sure to check out our many other buying guides, including the Best Wireless Headphones, Best Wirefree Earbuds, and Best Cheap Headphones. We put ’em all to the test, and these are our favorites. Most of them have free tiers, but the experience improves if you subscribe and pay a monthly fee. The things that separate streaming services today are the quality of music discovery-whether it’s based on algorithms or human curation-the user experience on desktop and mobile apps, what devices you can use them with, and their sound quality. All these services’ libraries pretty much mirror each other, with tens of millions of songs both popular and obscure. These days, it’s more about the user interface than catalog choice. For example, Taylor Swift might have been on Apple Music but not on Spotify Tidal was originally weighted toward hip-hop. Picking a music streaming service used to feel like choosing a sports team.
