Her name is Fannie Pentarra, and she’s one of Luke Skywalker’s Jedi. She and I have been close friends for a long time. But the dating part…well, that’s a new thing. Once we made it official, we met each other’s families—which was super simple with mine, and not-so-simple with hers. For one thing, Fannie’s family is made up of Rylothian Twi’leks, and I am very, very human. Did you know that Rylothians bow instead of shaking hands? Or that they consider snails a delicacy? For another thing, Fannie’s family is…oh, let’s say…complicated. Ruut Pentarra is the richest, most powerful, most feared man in the Tcha’buli region. He has five wives (soon to be six), dozens of concubines, and countless affairs (including one with his own daughter, Pennie). And that’s not even getting into all the children he’s fathered. So naturally, there were a lot of people I wound up meeting during that five-day trip to Ryloth: Fan’s unruly half-brothers, her catty full-sisters, an entire cast of servants and settlers and sex slaves… …What I didn’t count on, however, was being forced to meet myself.
