BLM joins partners at the 18th National Boy Scouts of America Jamboree

The Bureau of Land Management joins over 20,000 Scouts, Scoutmasters, and visitors in the 18th National Boy Scouts of America Jamboree taking place July 19-28. Boy Scouts will be coming from all across the country, as well as a few from abroad, to learn about leadership, earn merit badges and explore the great outdoors. The Jamboree will take place at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve (SBR), adjacent to the New River Gorge National River, Mount Hope, West Virginia. 

As stewards, the BLM manages public lands for the benefit of current and future generations. At this event, BLM staff will be on hand to teach boy scouts and their families about shared conservation with activities about energy, invasive weeds, archaeology and paleontology at three exhibits along the “Conservation Trail”.  The “Conservation Trail” is a stretch of resource-oriented exhibits hosted by 20+ government agencies and other organizations.  Each scout who completes a specified number of activities offered along the Conservation will earn a Conservation Area prize.

The BLM has a long standing partnership with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) at the local, regional, and national levels to provide information about and foster participation in volunteer training, outdoor education opportunities, and volunteer service projects.  BLM and other agencies collaborate and cooperate with BSA to serve the American family and connect kids to public lands by increasing leadership development opportunities for youth, increasing healthy choices among young people, and actively engaging children and families in the outdoors to encourage physically active lifestyles.

Camporee 2019! Cub Scout Pack 37 went camping at New Frontier Ranch, Oregon. The Webelos den competed in the annual Scout Games in challenges like hatchet-throwing, first aid race, knot relay, a 1-mile compass course, and more! The Scouts brought home a 3rd place ribbon for the Bucket Brigade and 1st place for the Flagpole Raising events! Even though it rained almost the whole time, these boys showed great Scout spirit and teamwork! Gender-Neutral Boy Scouts Will Rebrand to BSA in 2019

Oh, boy. The 108-year-old Boy Scouts of America has announced to rebrand to Scouts BSA, dropping “Boy” from its name as it gets ready to welcome girls next year. The “Scout Me In” campaign press release is just the first of the gender-neutral messaging touchpoints it’s rolling out.

The new brand identity guide in the revamped organization’s first ever Brand Center talks about crafting “messages that kids will want to hang on their bedroom walls.” In the introductory video above, the message alludes to the big changes: “As we continue to tell our story in traditional methods and new and exciting formats, consistency in the application of our core brand elements will be more important than ever.”

Reaction on social media, as you might guess, was swift and for the most part, unfavorable. “Destined to be taught as an example of ‘what not to do when rebranding”; for years to come,” Inc.’s Bill Murphy Jr. commented. Fox News was offended.

Confusing matters, the master brand for the umbrella organization that runs the new BSA along with the Cub Scouts will still be called the Boy Scouts of America.  The new Scout Me In campaign rolling out now aims to create awareness for the rebranding and new gender-inclusive policy coming to scouting in America.
