On this day, September 26 in 1888, T. S. Eliot was born into the world in St. Louis, Missouri. In honor of his birthday, we present this 1932 First American edition of his Poems 1909-1925, published by Harcourt, Brace and Co. in New York.
Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965) was an American-English poet, dramatist, publisher, essayist, editor, and literary critic. He was a leader in the Modernist poetry movement and is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. He breathed new life into English poetry through his explorations in phrasing, style, and structure. He is most famously known for his 1922 publication, The Waste Land, which is often deemed the most influential poetic work of the 20th century. Among the many awards and honors given to Eliot were the British Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948, three Tony Awards in 1950 and 1983 (two posthumously for Cats), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.

Happy birthday, Marsha P. Johnson! (August 24, 1945)
An influential figure in the early LGBT rights movement, Marsha P. Johnson was born in New Jersey to a working class family. Johnson first began dressing as a girl as a young age, but chose to suppress her desires and identity for many years due to bigoted harassment. After graduating high school, Johnson left home for New York City, where she finally allowed herself to come out. She began performing as a drag queen and frequenting the Stonewall Inn. She was involved in the Stonewall Uprising, though denied accounts of being one of the leaders of the rising, and continued to play a major role in the gay rights movement afterward. Johnson organized with the Gay Liberation Front and co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, an organization which sought to provide food and shelter to homeless LGBT youth. Unhoused herself for much of her time in New York, Johnson often relied on sex work in order to get by. In 1992, Johnson's body was recovered from the Hudson River; she had evidently been murdered in a hate crime. The police ruled her death a suicide despite the evidence against this, and Johnson's friends and allies fought for years to have the case reopened and investigated as a homicide.
A happiest heavenly birthday to River Phoenix, who would have turned 54 today. A wonderful actor, and human. Who i have adored since I was 13. I hope he found happiness.
hey so yesterday was my 55th birthday and I went to a burlesque show to celebrate. Amazing dancers of all genders and ages. There were drag performers, a contortionist, a knife-thrower, a fire-swallower, and the headliner, last performer of the night, had been a burlesque performer since 1970.
Do the math! She was very elderly and didn't make any effort to hide it with her long white hair. She did not hide her wrinkles. She did not hide her crepe skin. She was so fucking hot and had the crowd eating out of her hand.
Me, having my Gen X aging crisis quietly, mesmerized by a woman at least 20 years older than me.
