summary: flowers held many different meanings, and renjun loved that. from giving someone a baby's breath to giving them peonies, he loved how up front the message was, yet how hidden it was to someone that didn't understand their true meanings. You had always adored flowers, the colours, the scents, the meanings. And so, every week, you would go into Floral Dreams, to buy new flowers to draw, however Renjun would always throw in additional flowers to express his ever-growing crush on you, unbeknownst to him you understood every word.

If you had told Renjun this time last year he would be working part time as a florist, he would've simply laughed. But yet here he is, adorning a black apron, rearranging the plants in the display cabinet.

Floral Dreams was a great place for Renjun. It was never too busy, it was a five minute walk to his apartment and, thanks to Donghyuck, he has learned far more about flowers in the past month than he has learned about art history at his uni classes. He would never admit it to him, but Renjun was intrigued by the meanings each flower held.

From the bluebell to the yellow carnation, every flower held a different meaning. At first, Renjun couldn't care less. They were just flowers after all, their only job to him was to sit and look pretty. However the longer he spent in the floristry, the more his curiosity and his passion grew.

And now here he was, currently wiping down the counter he had just used to arrange a bouquet for somebody's birthday.

As he returned behind the till, the soft chime of the shop door bell rang. He glanced over and locked eyes with you. A few months ago, you had moved into Neo City in order to attend the local university and study fine art. It was an interesting place for sure. It was a quaint town yet there was always something going on, whether it be different celebrations for certain holidays or events, to small annual carnivals and parades that would happen.

During your first week of moving in, you had explored the town centre, natural curiosity getting the better of you. That was when you stumbled upon Floral Dreams. The forest green painting on the window frames along with several broad leafed plants sat outside the shop, charmed you.

You remember when you first met Renjun. It was a rainy Wednesday about a month after you had moved. Your classes had just finished and you decided to buy a small bouquet. Something to brighten your dreary dorm room. And so you headed to Floral Dreams. When you stepped into the shop, instead of the cheery greeting you would usually get from Donghyuck, you found that he was busy talking to another guy, Renjun.

Both boys had briefly glanced towards the door, with Donghyuck giving a small wave, whilst the other boy shot you a smile. He was cute.

Returning the wave with your own, you continued into the shop, looking at all the flowers, taking in their colours and scents. Five minutes had gone by and you had chosen all the flowers you had wanted and walked up to the counter to place your order.

You rang the small bell placed on the countertop and after a few seconds, the new guy from earlier emerged from the back room and properly greeted and introduced himself, Renjun.

To say he was pretty was an understatement. He had a soft smile, kind eyes and long hair which made him look ethereal. His voice was melodic. So melodic that you only snapped back to reality halfway through his sentence.

You purchased the flowers and had another look around the empty shop, this time to admire the blossoming flowers. Back at the counter, Renjun would glance at you, whilst he wrapped the bouquet, his mind thinking about your smile and vibe whilst his hands carefully wrapped the bouquet up.

When he was finished, he rang the desk bell to catch your attention. He handed you the flowers and you were on your way. Not before turning back to Renjun and shooting him one last smile with a cheerful goodbye.

From the moment you walked in, Renjun knew his heart had exploded and his slightly dull world would never be the same again.

Week after week you would come back to the shop. It was always at 4pm and it was always an hour into Renjun's shift. You guys had managed to acquaint yourselves and make small talk, with the weather and how both of you had been, being the usual topic of choice.

Today Renjun was determined to make a move. Whether it was changing the topic to be something more in depth, or giving his number to you, he was definitely going to do something. And so when you walked up to the counter to place your order, Renjun made his move. He asked the question that had been on his mind. Why in the heavens did you buy so many flowers? The laughter that followed made Renjun's heart flutter, it was beautiful.

You then proceeded to explain the reason you moved and why almost all the store's sales were from you. Upon hearing that you went to the same university he did, Renjun was enthralled and began talking about his passion for art and the history behind famous pieces.

Much to his dismay, his hands had a mind of their own, and had wrapped up your selected bouquet far too quickly for his liking. Just as you were about to grab the bouquet, Renjun let out a 'wait!' which made you pause.

He ran into the back room and came out a moment later with some ribbon along with a couple of gardenias and blue salvias. 'It'll make the bouquet look amazing, trust me' he said with that smile you had fallen for.

Once he was done, you took the flowers, bid him adieu and left, ready to take photographs of this masterpiece.

As soon as you left, Renjun let out a sigh of content and his heart started to calm down. He had a crazy idea to use what he had learned from Donghyuck, and to confess to you in the form of flowers.

It was a bold move, one that made him feel happy with himself.

Over the next couple of months the same routine would occur. You arrived, picked out flowers, ordered the bouquet, Renjun would wrap them up, you would take them, then leave.

However, as time went on, you began noticing flowers that you hadn't picked out.

For example, you had ordered a bouquet with mainly red flowers, with a couple of white ones to make it more visually appealing, however you don't really remember picking up the white camellia. Or that time you noticed a couple of yellow jasmines mixed with your sunflowers.

You eventually thought of looking up what these flowers meant. You knew one of your old high school flowers loved gardening and would often talk about flower meanings, but you had never paid any mind to them. Oh how you wish you had.

And so that's how you spent the evening on different websites looking at different meanings for all the flowers you could remember buying, and the definitions.

The morning after, you had a brilliant idea.

That next week, you came in at the usual time with a list on your phone of all the flowers you had never actually bought. You suspected that a certain someone kept slipping different flowers into your bouquet, which was actually quite sweet to you, however you were going to surprise him.

You picked out various flowers that were composed for a yellow, blue and white theme. You included the yellow jasmines and gardenias, along with the white camellias and blue salvias. Additional flowers were added and made a stunning bouquet, the best you had imagined yet.

For how quiet the shop was, your heart was thumping a lot louder than usual, despite this you walked to the till with a small smile. The normal routine went on, Renjun making conversation with you. The topic for today was conspiracies and aliens, which would usually be quite interesting to you, but your mind was in a different place.

Just as Renjun was tying the last ribbon up, a 'wait!' escaped your lips. A slightly startled Renjun paused to look at you. Dashing away to the front of the store, you picked out a red rose and walked back to where he was waiting.

Much to his surprise, you added the rose to the centre of the bouquet, pushed the bouquet towards him and then pulled out a letter that had been in your coat pocket and pushed it across the counter in his direction.

He froze. Almost everyone knew what a red rose meant.

He opened the letter. All the flowers he had given you with their meanings were listed, along with the red rose.

Underneath was a small paragraph. His already racing heart began to explode as he read the words 'let's go on a date tomorrow' followed with your number underneath.

He looked back up to you. You were currently looking everywhere and anywhere that wasn’t Renjun.

Placing the letter down, he came around from behind the desk and hugged you. He could feel you tense up under him, however in a matter of seconds, your arms were around him, and a sigh of relief escaped your lips.

From the moment he met you, his heart had exploded, the colours in his world seemed to be brighter whenever you were there.

He loved hearing your laugh, seeing your smile, being in your presence.

Reborn From Ashe

A bit of backstory for my Hunter on how she gained her abilities.

Through demon fun times.

         "Dad, I'm nineteen!  You said yourself the ritual was suppose to happen when I was eighteen."  Ashe was pouting again.  This happened every few months since after said eighteenth birthday.  Her father had been delaying though he had run out of excuses. She excelled in her training and was ready finally since then.  At least she thought she was.  He was still hesitant.

        Her dad, a big man with broad shoulders and a muscled gut with grayed black hair, sighed as he looked at his daughter over the paper.  He couldn't argue with her much longer.  Truth be told he didn't want her to go through the ritual.  At least not yet.  Not until she was older.  She was his baby girl after all and the thought of her not making it out was his biggest fear.  She was stubborn like he was, and he caved.  "Alright.  Get my things and get yourself ready."

        Ashe's pout dropped and immediately turned into a smile as she zipped around the house to get the proper things needed for any good ritual. Her father was already clearing the furniture in the living room to the side so he would have enough space.  When she brought him his supplies he took out the chalk and started to draw various symbols around a circle.  He placed candles around the circle, and she took her place in the center.  Each candle lit he muttered a phrase until he got to the one in front of her.  In his hand he had a mortar and pestle where he crushed various herbs and liquids.  He dipped his finger into it and wiped an 'x' on her forehead.  

        "You'll meet Mulphius in there.  I can't give you details of what's to come." Mulphius was the demon her family had worked with for thousands of years, so she was told.  He was a demon of the deep woods and decay, at least that's all her father told her.  She had seen him once when she was a little girl and her father had to summon him for help on a hunt.  Her memory of him was fuzzy but she remembered the large towering beast had seen her and beckoned her over with a large claw.  He was friendly and even had let her climb on his various short tree branches that stuck out of his body as him and her father talked.  That was all she could remember though.

         "I'll tell him you said hi."  She had a cheeky grin but the serious expression on her father's face made it drop from her face.  She knew that look on his face meant business.

        "Don't mention me.  This is about you, my star."  He crouched down in front of her as he lit the last candle. "Don't get lost in there. Remember what I taught you.  And most importantly."  His hand cupped her cheek and his thumb gently ran over her cheek bone.  There was a sad look in his eyes.  "You come back out of there.  You come back to your old pops, okay?"

       "I'll come back dad.  I promise."  She smiled to reassure him.  It seemed to work a little as his lips turned up in a smile just slightly.

       "That's my girl."  With that they both closed their eyes and words that would be alien to a humans ears came from him.

        Then everything went black and the world around her vanished.

        It felt like she was floating but she couldn't tell how far away from the ground she was.  Being in pitch black wasn't helping but what looked like fireflies suddenly appeared from behind her to flutter around her.  She chuckled as she watched them, and she tried to keep her eyes on them.  Then there were more.  So many surrounded her that it felt like she was surrounded by tiny fluttering stars.  More and more fireflies showed themselves and spiraled around her until it was all she could see was their light.  Just as suddenly as they came they were gone though, and her feet touched down onto dewy grass.  That's when she realized she was naked.  The fireflies scattered into the woods that now was around her; leaving her to the trees and sounds of the various bugs and animals.

       "Mulphius?"  Her voice felt wrong in the environment, her step almost unwanted as they walked her through the tall grass.

“During the 20th century, Americans developed a love affair with pasta. On the big screen, spaghetti played memorable roles in classic films such as the Marx Brothers’ Night at the Opera (1935), Disney’s Lady and the Tramp (1955), and Goodfellas (1990).”

While the popularity of noodles is a widely accepted consensus, its origin is still a prominently debated subject. There are numerous contenders who have claimed to be the creators of the Noodle. Italians profess that they are the pioneers of this plant based food, whereas the Chinese argue that they invented this culinary sensation.

Pasta is an integral part of the Italian diet and culture. With shapes ranging from small pinwheels to large sheets, its diversity can be witnessed across the regions of this unified country. Each Italian province has its own rich history with pasta, shaped by its geographical limits and foreign influences, and as a result unique dishes native to these expanses have become a beacon for their identities. The emergence of Pasta in Italy was formerly attributed to Marco Polo, a venetian explorer. He voyaged to China, and upon his return in 1295, he brought back copious amounts of spices and other discoveries which included noodles.”

Andō Momofuku: An Inventor Who Used His Noodle to Change Global Food Culture

“ Instant ramen: just add hot water and you have a meal in a few minutes, anytime, anywhere. The product had its beginnings with Chicken Ramen by Nissin Foods, invented by Andō Momofuku in a backyard workshop.

Andō Momofuku (1910–2007) was rightly known as “Mr. Noodles.” His instant noodles, invented in 1958 [48 years old], record yearly sales of 5.5 billion units in Japan alone; worldwide, nearly 100 billion portions are consumed every year, truly making the product a “global food.” Nissin Food Products, the company Andō founded, is part of the Nissin Group, which has grown into a giant with net sales of more than ¥490 billion in the fiscal year ending March 2017.

But before success came many trials. Andō was an up-and-coming industrialist who lost all his wealth overnight. By the time he invented Chicken Ramen, the world’s first instant ramen, he was already 48 years old.”

“Andō left these words: “In life, it’s never too late. It took me forty-eight years to invent this product.”

The idea for instant ramen came to Andō at a black market near Osaka’s main train station during the years of severe food shortages following the war. Under a cold winter sky, he saw a long line of people lined up waiting their turn to eat a bowl of ramen...A few years later, when he did not know where his own next meal was coming from, he recalled that scene and decided to try developing ramen that was simple to make and easy to eat, in addition to keeping well.

[Ando] came up with the flash-frying method, frying the noodles briefly to eliminate moisture. Andō’s hometown of Tainan is known for yi-mian, a type of noodle that is deep-fried before boiling...Andō got the idea from his wife Masako’s tempura. Seeing how she prepared crispy tempura by frying it in a way that drove out excess moisture, he hit on the notion of flash-frying his noodles.”

“Thanks to Andō’s experimentation, Chicken Ramen, the world’s first instant ramen, went on sale in August 1958.  The noodles are permeated with a concentrated soup consisting of chicken stock and seasonings; simply adding hot water produces a steaming bowl of ramen. Called mahō no rāmen, “magic ramen,” when it first went on the market, Chicken Ramen became a runaway hit.

When Andō first told Masako that he was going into the ramen business, she reportedly said: “If you’re going to do that, make sure you become Japan’s best ramen maker.” Her admonition came true, as Andō watched yearly sales of his Chicken Ramen reach ¥4.3 billion just five years later.”

Filipino spaghetti

“Filipino spaghetti, also known as sweet spaghetti, is a Filipino adaptation of the Italian spaghetti with Bolognese sauce. It has a distinctively sweet sauce, usually made from tomato sauce sweetened with brown sugar or banana ketchup. It is typically topped with sliced hotdogs or smokedlongganisa sausages, giniling (ground meat), and grated cheese. It is regarded as a comfort food in Philippine cuisine.

The dish is believed to date back to the period between the 1940s and the 1960s. During the American Commonwealth Period, a shortage of tomato supplies in the Second World War forced the local development of the banana ketchup. Spaghetti with Bolognese sauce was introduced by the Americans and was tweaked to suit the local Filipino predilection for sweet dishes.”

Banana ketchup

Banana ketchup or banana sauce is a popular Philippine fruit ketchup condiment made from mashed banana, sugar, vinegar, and spices. Its natural color is brownish-yellow, but it is often dyed red to resemble tomato ketchup. Banana ketchup was made when there was a shortage of tomato ketchup during World War II, due to lack of tomatoes and a comparatively high production of bananas.”

“Jajangmyeon or jjajangmyeon is a Chinese Korean noodle dish topped with a thick sauce made of chunjang, diced pork, and vegetables.

Jajangmyeon dates back to 1905, when it was introduced in Gonghwachun, a Chinese restaurant in Incheon Chinatown run by an immigrant from the Shandong Province of China. The restaurant is now the Jjajangmyeon Museum.

In the mid-50s in South Korea, soon after the Korean War, jajangmyeon was sold at low prices so that anyone could eat it without burden. The new Korean-style Jajangmyeon began to gain explosive popularity among the many merchants visiting the port of Incheon, which was the center of trade, and the many dock workers working in the fish market, and quickly spread throughout the country.“ 

Can My Dog Eat Pasta?

“The answer is maybe. In its plain form, pasta is unlikely to harm your dog, especially in moderation. However, it is worth being careful, as some pets have wheat allergies or are sensitive to grains. Pasta has very minimal nutritional value as well, so while it isn’t poisonous, it shouldn’t be a regular part of your dog’s diet.

Oh, and avoid the sauce. Onions and garlic are toxic to dogs, so pasta sauce can make your dog sick.”

Can my dog eat spaghetti?

Only plain! If the spaghetti is in sauce, most sauces contain onions and garlic, which are toxic to dogs so avoid them completely to be safe. That’s not to mention that most spaghetti sauces include sugar and salt at problematic levels for dogs.

Nothing quite like a salty, meaty, bowl of hot ramen. Unfortunately, both traditional ramen and instant ramen are too salty for your dog to enjoy. Trinidad & Tobago Attorney General Denies Knowledge of Family Connection In Cannabis Business

A great Investigative piece by the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian who have come across a cannabis connection to the country’s Attorney General, Faris Al-Rawi, who’s response so far, is. “My wife has a large fam­i­ly and they are in­volved in var­i­ous busi­ness­es. I knew noth­ing of this.”

“I knew noth­ing.”

At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Faris Al-Rawi yes­ter­day said he was in the dark about months-old com­pa­ny West In­di­an Cannabis Com­pa­ny Lim­it­ed, a re­tail firm whose di­rec­tor is fam­i­ly to his wife.

So­cial me­dia was busy yes­ter­day shar­ing a high­light­ed copy of the com­pa­ny reg­is­tra­tion doc­u­ments. Large red cir­cles high­light­ed that one of the di­rec­tors had the same sur­name of Al-Rawi’s wife.

How­ev­er, the own­er of the West In­di­an Cannabis Com­pa­ny Ltd (Wican­na­co), Christo­pher Moses, yes­ter­day de­nied his com­pa­ny had any­thing to do with mar­i­jua­na, de­spite its com­pa­ny name and the brand­ing on its cloth­ing.

Moses is mar­ried to Jen­na Marie Na­hous—who is al­so list­ed as a di­rec­tor—who is re­lat­ed to Mona Na­hous, wife of At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Al-Rawi.

In a state­ment post­ed on his Face­book page last night, how­ev­er, Moses al­so­de­nied hav­ing any in­ter­ac­tion with the At­tor­ney Gen­er­al.

“I cat­e­gor­i­cal­ly state that I have no busi­ness deal­ings with Faris Al-Rawi what­so­ev­er. I do not, nor did I dis­cuss my busi­ness with him, as I have NO fi­nan­cial re­la­tion­ship with him. I do not poss­es any in­side in­for­ma­tion per­tain­ing to the cannabis in­dus­try as it comes to the fore in T&T and re­gion wide,” Moses said as he re­spond­ed to al­le­ga­tions that he may have had pri­or knowl­edge of the pend­ing leg­is­la­tion which will de­crim­i­nalise mar­i­jua­na us­age in T&T.

In an in­ter­view, Moses told Guardian Me­dia that Wican­na­co was just a cloth­ing com­pa­ny us­ing mar­i­jua­na sym­bols for brand­ing. He added, how­ev­er, that due to the new­found pop­u­lar­i­ty on so­cial me­dia, he was plan­ning to jump in­to le­gal cannabis re­tail when­ev­er the bill was passed.

But af­ter fur­ther dis­cus­sions with his wife in the wake of the so­cial me­dia furore cre­at­ed over the past hours, Moses told the Guardian they had de­cid­ed to “stay in our lane”.

“We have de­cid­ed to stick to what we know. We had and have no in­ten­tion of get­ting in­to the space be­yond ap­par­el,” Moses said.

The com­pa­ny’s web­site states that it sells mer­chan­dise and cloth­ing with mar­i­jua­na sym­bols.

Al­though Moses said it was on­ly an ap­par­el and mer­chan­dise com­pa­ny, the reg­is­tra­tion doc­u­ments are broad­er and just lists the com­pa­ny as a re­tail com­pa­ny.

Moses con­firmed that he was on­ly now con­sid­er­ing get­ting in­to the le­gal mar­i­jua­na in­dus­try not on­ly in T&T but al­so up the is­lands.

In an in­ter­view with Guardian Me­dia yes­ter­day, Al-Rawi said he re­ceived the com­pa­ny reg­is­tra­tion doc­u­ments from the me­dia yes­ter­day and knew noth­ing of the com­pa­ny or the fact that it was reg­is­tered on­ly months ago in Feb­ru­ary.

Hours af­ter learn­ing of the link, how­ev­er, Al-Rawi said he con­tact­ed his wife’s rel­a­tive and learned the com­pa­ny sold cloth­ing and was al­ready in op­er­a­tion with a func­tion­al web­site and sales.

“I can con­firm that the per­son is a rel­a­tive of my wife,” the AG said.

“But this is the first time I am hear­ing of it and see­ing this,” he said, re­fer­ring to the com­pa­ny reg­is­tra­tion doc­u­ments.

“My wife has a large fam­i­ly and they are in­volved in var­i­ous busi­ness­es. I knew noth­ing of this.”

The ap­par­el cloth­ing com­pa­ny has as its main share­hold­er GV Hold­ings Lim­it­ed. That com­pa­ny pro­duces 3 Star Sports­wear and Rossi sport­ing ap­par­el.

The com­pa­ny was reg­is­tered back in Feb­ru­ary, sev­er­al months be­fore Al-Rawi him­self an­nounced cannabis con­trol leg­is­la­tion would be brought to Par­lia­ment for le­gal­i­sa­tion de­bate.

A company of the company registration for the West Indian Cannabis Company Limited, whose directors include an in-law of Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi.

The Dan­ger­ous Drugs (Amend­ment) Bill was passed in the Low­er House on Wednes­day and in the Sen­ate Fri­day night.

The Cannabis Con­trol Bill, which is the re­tail and mar­ket­ing as­pect of the le­gal­i­sa­tion, is cur­rent­ly be­fore a Joint Se­lect Com­mit­tee of Par­lia­ment. De­spite the lat­est de­vel­op­ment, Al-Rawi said he would not be re­cus­ing him­self from cannabis de­bates or dis­cus­sions in the fu­ture.

“Why should I?” Al-Rawi said.

“I am not in any way ben­e­fit­ing fi­nan­cial­ly from any busi­ness.”

Rather, Al-Rawi de­scribed him­self as an at­tor­ney and a prop­er­ty de­vel­op­er.

“I have no busi­ness in­ter­ests in any­thing else,” he said.

In fact, he said if he re­cused him­self from every dis­cus­sion in which he had an in­ter­est, he would not be able to par­tic­i­pate in tax amnesty de­bates or the de­mon­eti­sa­tion of the cot­ton-based $100 notes.

“Had I known about it, I would have de­clared it and would press on,” he said.

“I could on­ly de­clare what I know.”

Mean­while, Moses said while he usu­al­ly re­mained silent on so­cial me­dia, he was plan­ning to put out a state­ment and a link to his web­site.

“All my fam­i­ly from T&T (are) in the tex­tile and gar­ment in­dus­try and cloth­ing line,” Moses said.

“Wican­nco is just a cloth­ing com­pa­ny.”

He said that while the com­pa­ny’s de­scrip­tion was broad, the main pur­pose of the site and com­pa­ny was to “cen­tralise press and me­dia through­out the Caribbean.”

“I am not in the mar­i­jua­na in­dus­try, it’s just a brand,” Moses added.

Moses said he was al­so tak­en aback by the at­tacks on so­cial me­dia just be­cause of an “ab­stract con­nec­tion” to the At­tor­ney Gen­er­al.

“I’m po­lit­i­cal­ly ex­posed be­cause my wife is not even blood-re­lat­ed to the AG?” Moses asked.

“That just doesn’t hold wa­ter.”

Mean­while, mar­i­jua­na ac­tivist Naz­ma Muller took to so­cial me­dia to ques­tion why, back in 2015, the Min­istry of Le­gal Af­fairs re­fused to al­low her to reg­is­ter “The Cannabis Foun­da­tion.” She said she was not al­lowed to use the gan­ja leaf sym­bol as the com­pa­ny lo­go for the Caribbean Col­lec­tive for Jus­tice ei­ther.

When Guardian Me­dia post­ed Muller’s ques­tion to Al-Rawi, he said, “I have no role in the reg­is­tra­tion of com­pa­nies.”

He pro­vid­ed two com­pa­ny reg­is­tra­tions, one in 2015 and the oth­er in 2016, adding, “You have seen for your­self that there are sev­er­al com­pa­nies with the name.”

He said the word was grant­ed to com­pa­nies be­fore he be­came At­tor­ney Gen­er­al.

“The Reg­is­trar Gen­er­al is the au­thor­i­ty,” he said.

The Cannabis Con­trol Au­thor­i­ty will be the body al­lowed to grant li­cences to the per­sons seek­ing to be­come re­tail providers, as well as those hop­ing to trans­port, ex­port and im­port the herb.

In pur­suit of build­ing an ap­par­el line named WICC (West In­di­an Cannabis Co) I knew I would need a part­ner with the ex­pe­ri­ence and know how re­quired to make this a suc­cess­ful ven­ture.

Eas­i­ly enough, I turned to and aligned my­self with my own fam­i­ly, GV Hold­ings, based in Trinidad, who have been in the tex­tile and gar­ment in­dus­try for over 40 years who have suc­cess­ful­ly cre­at­ed many mass mar­ket brands re­gion­al­ly over the years in­clud­ing house­hold names such as Rossi.

Fur­ther to the above, I cat­e­gor­i­cal­ly state that I have no busi­ness deal­ings with Faris Al-Rawi what­so­ev­er. I do not, nor did I dis­cuss my busi­ness with him as I have NO fi­nan­cial re­la­tion­ship with him. How to Play the Next Cannabis Green Wave in Stocks (CURLF, TLRY, NUGS, CGC, GTBIF)

Cannabis stocks have been on fire in recent days following news that the House Judiciary Committee approved a Bill last Wednesday to push forward legislation set to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2019 (the “MORE Act”) passed by a wide margin, 24-10. It saw bipartisan support and is expected to easily pass the House in a full vote. The bill would remove cannabis from the list of Schedule 1 narcotics, which would leave legality entirely up to the states and allow cannabis sellers to access traditional banking services. In other words, it stands to stimulate a fresh wave of growth and investment in the cannabis patch. For market participants, this has become a confusing sector, full of sound and fury, signifying little in the way of gains over recent months. To help sort through the rubble and pinpoint the best opportunities for the next wave of gains in front of us, we take a look at five of the most interesting plays in the space: Curaleaf Holdings Inc (OTCMKTS:CURLF), Tilray Inc (NASDAQ:TLRY), Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCMKTS:NUGS), Canopy Growth Corp (NYSE:CGC), Green Thumb Industries Inc (OTCMKTS:GTBIF).     Curaleaf Holdings Inc (OTCMKTS:CURLF) is a vertically integrated cannabis player. The stock has been notably outperforming the broader hemp-cannabis-cbd complex in recent action. Relative strength is an extremely important sector indicator, so this should not be overlooked. The company roped in revenues of $64.9M during its most recently reported quarterly financial data. In addition, the company has a strong balance sheet, with cash levels far exceeding current liabilities ($140.3M against $64.1M). CURLF just announced it will launch its custom-designed Veterans Cannabis Project pre-roll product in Florida today. According to the release, a portion of all proceeds will benefit the Veterans Cannabis Project (VCP), an organization that advocates for legal and supported access of medical cannabis for veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs. In Florida the boxes will be available for $26, and each box contains five 0.4 oz pre-rolls for a total of 2 grams per box. "We are proud to launch the Veterans Cannabis Project initiative in Florida to provide additional support and education for veterans in the communities we serve," said Pablo Arizmendi-Kalb, President of Curaleaf Florida. "Through this partnership with the Veterans Cannabis Project, we hope to increase awareness for veteran access to medical cannabis." Curaleaf Holdings Inc (OTCMKTS:CURLF) operates a large number of dispensaries, 12 cultivation sites and 9 processing sites with a focus on highly populated, limited license states, including Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. Curaleaf, Inc. leverages its extensive research and development capabilities to distribute cannabis products in multiple formats with the highest standard for safety, effectiveness, consistent quality and customer care. Curaleaf is committed to being the industry's leading resource in education and advancement through research and advocacy. CURLF shares has been acting well over recent days, up over 10% in that time. "At Veterans Cannabis Project, our message is simple: medical cannabis may help save lives and veterans deserve full, legal access. I hear every day from veterans who have benefited from medical cannabis as a treatment option for addressing the physical and emotional wounds of war," said Doug Distaso, Executive Director of the Veterans Cannabis Project. "That's why VCP is proud to work with Curaleaf, the largest cannabis company in the United States, to advocate for, educate on, and support access to cannabis in Florida where more than 1.5 million veterans reside."   Tilray Inc (NASDAQ:TLRY) engages in the research, cultivation, processing, and distribution of medical cannabis. This is one of the highest profile names in the space. But if you look under the surface, it may also be the weakest because of the crushing burden of its debt-servicing costs at this point. The company offers its products in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Germany, New Zealand, and South Africa. Tilray, Inc. was incorporated in 2018 and is headquartered in Nanaimo, Canada. According to the company’s IPO announcement, “Tilray, Inc., a vertically-integrated and federally-licensed cannabis cultivator, processor and distributor, today announced the pricing of its initial public offering of 9,000,000 shares of Class 2 common stock. 6,524,000 shares of Class 2 common stock will be offered in the United States and certain other countries except Canada at a price to the public of US$17.00 per share for a total offering size of US$110,908,000 and 2,476,000 shares of Class 2 common stock, which we refer to as Subordinate Voting Shares, will be offered in Canada and certain other countries except the United States at a price to the public of CAD$22.451 per share for a total offering size of CAD$55,586,200. Based on current exchange rate1, the total combined offering size is approximately US$153,000,000.00.” One of its key subsidiaries is High Park, which was launched to produce and distribute world-class cannabis brands and products for the Canadian market. Based in Toronto and led by a team with deep experience in cannabis and global consumer brands, High Park has secured the exclusive rights to produce and distribute a broad-based portfolio of cannabis brands and products in Canada, subject to applicable laws and regulations. In addition, High Park has developed new brands and products for the Canadian market. Upon the coming into force of federal legalization of cannabis for adult-use and corresponding provincial legislation, High Park anticipates fulfilling adult-use supply agreements and purchase orders in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Northwest Territories and Yukon on October 17, 2018. Tilray Inc (NASDAQ:TLRY) pulled in sales of $51.1M in its last reported quarterly financials, representing top line growth of 408.6%. In addition, the company is battling some balance sheet hurdles, with cash levels struggling to keep up with current liabilities ($122.4M against $130.2M, respectively).     Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCMKTS:NUGS) is one of the largest publicly traded marijuana cultivators in the United States, and a rapidly growing story on the California cannabis scene. The company just put out its Q3 earnings data, and it was something of a revelation that strongly suggests this company is now ready to play in the big boys’ league. The company saw over 1,300% y/y sales growth and 300% growth in assets. This is a company that just went around the shoulder of an exponential growth curve in overall size. And we would expect that trend to continue in the quarters ahead. “Q3 sets a new standard across basically all top-line metrics, and we expect Q4 to continue to show continued growth,” commented Simon Yu, Cannabis Strategic Ventures CEO. “We were successful in obtaining and investing capital through the last few years, which helped to drive the revenue and a substantial increase in the Company’s total assets, while improving gross profit margins. We expect continued growth on the top-line along with a declining drop in net losses next year.” The Company is a Los Angeles-based cultivator that incubates, develops and partners with category leaders within the cannabis and ancillary sectors. The Firm's NUGS brand experience provides operational and financial strategic partnerships and a range of essential services to emerging and existing Cannabis consumer brands. According to its release, the performance seen in Q3 appears to be something of a watershed moment or a breakthrough, which suggests this stock could be a surprise outperformer as it jumps onto the radar of cannabis stock traders during this resurgence. “We saw an expected acceleration in top-line growth in Q3 as we expanded the scale of our operations through new investments,” continued Mr. Yu. “As we press forward, we fully anticipate that scaling growth to continue in the months and quarters ahead. Our message to our valued shareholders right now is this: we are committed to continued aggressive expansion and a gradual move toward profitability. We are becoming simultaneously bigger and more efficient with every passing month, and we are more confident than ever in our mission to deliver value and growth to our shareholders. The cannabis growth is still in its very early stage. And we are positioning the Company as a leader for many years to come.”     Canopy Growth Corp (NYSE:CGC) engages in growing, possession, and sale of medical cannabis in Canada. Its products include dried flowers, oils and concentrates, softgel capsules, and hemps. It’s perhaps the biggest overall name in the space when it comes to a combination of producing and investing in the space, so it has to be near the top of any measure as far as benefitting from a shift whereby full-scale legalization in the US market is concerned. The company managed to rope in revenues totaling $90.5M in overall sales during the company's most recently reported quarterly financial data -- a figure that represents a rate of top line growth of 249.1%, as compared to year-ago data in comparable terms. In addition, the company has a strong balance sheet, with cash levels far exceeding current liabilities ($3.2B against $372.8M). According to its own materials, the company offers its products under the Tweed, Black Label, Spectrum Cannabis, DNA Genetics, Leafs By Snoop, Bedrocan Canada, CraftGrow, and Foria brand names. It also offers its products through Tweed Main Street, a single online platform that enables registered patients to purchase medicinal cannabis from various producers across various brands. In the company’s words, “Canopy Growth is a world-leading diversified cannabis and hemp company, offering distinct brands and curated cannabis varieties in dried, oil and Softgel capsule forms. From product and process innovation to market execution, Canopy Growth is driven by a passion for leadership and a commitment to building a world-class cannabis company one product, site and country at a time.” This is also one of the most geographically diversified players in the cannabis space, with operations in 12 countries across five continents. One of its most important divestitures and strategic interests is Canopy Rivers Inc., a unique investment and operating platform structured to pursue investment opportunities in the emerging global cannabis sector. The company works collaboratively with Canopy Growth to identify strategic counterparties seeking financial and/or operating support. The company has developed an investment ecosystem of complementary cannabis operating companies that represent various segments of the value chain across the emerging cannabis sector. As the portfolio continues to develop, constituents will be provided with opportunities to work with Canopy Growth and collaborate among themselves, which the company believes will maximize value for its shareholders and foster an environment of innovation, synergy and value creation for the entire ecosystem.     Green Thumb Industries Inc (OTCMKTS:GTBIF) is another recent relative strength leader in the space, with shares holding up better than other cannabis names over the past couple of months, and then bouncing sharply last week on the group’s momentum and energy. To help push the action, the company just announced it will open Rise King of Prussia, its eighth retail location in Pennsylvania and 34th in the nation, on November 26. According to the release, Rise King of Prussia will host an open house for the community on November 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The open house will be held before cannabis products are on site so all are welcome to attend and meet the Rise team, including the General Manager and Pennsylvania Market President. Green Thumb Industries Inc (OTCMKTS:GTBIF) is a producer and distributor of cannabis products including flower, concentrates for dabbing and vaporizing, edibles, and topicals. The company markets its products through third party retailers. It also owns and operates a chain of 50 retail stores under the RISE dispensaries name. The company was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The company is a national cannabis cultivator, processor and dispensary operator, is dedicated to providing dignified access to safe and effective cannabis nationwide while giving back to the communities in which they serve. As a vertically integrated company, GTI manufactures and sells a well-rounded suite of branded cannabis products including flower, concentrates, edibles, and topicals. The company also owns and operates a rapidly growing national chain of retail cannabis stores called RISE(TM) dispensaries. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, GTI has seven manufacturing facilities and licenses for 50 retail locations across seven highly regulated U.S. markets. Established in 2014, GTI employs more than 350 people and serves hundreds of thousands of patients and customers each year. And the stock has been acting well over recent days, up something like 7% in that time. Green Thumb Industries Inc (OTCMKTS:GTBIF) has pulled in $114M in trailing twelve-month revenues, representing 228% growth on a quarterly y/y basis. The weather has finally broken for most of North America, which has advantages alone. Fewer bugs and less heat make any work we have to do a little easier and if it hasn’t yet, we’re right on the verge of plants dying down, cutting some of our workload and making getting around a bit easier.

The season has more to offer, though, blessed as many of us find it. From the holidays around the corner to seasonal trends, autumn can give us nice boosts to our preparedness.

We don’t have a lot of time left for Halloween (totally my bad) but some of them will be available through Thanksgiving here in the U.S. Others are based solely in the changing of seasons and we have more time yet.

Straw bales, Corncobs, & Squashes

Autumn means we commonly see some decorations that can help us out, especially if we have livestock. Fewer still do it, but there are still neighborhoods and houses that go all out celebrating harvests and holidays.

Straw bales and stuffing from the porch and dooryard scarecrows are sometimes too far gone for animal bedding, but it can be useful stuff as mulch.

Make sure to spread that straw in walkways or stash it for areas of the lawn that end up boggy and muddy, trails our pets and family tear up, and places we want to re-seed with a cereal or different lawn grass. Straw – like hay – has increasingly been treated with Roundup. The herbicide doesn’t hurt monocots, but it will affect broad leaf plants. That means it’s a no-go for pretty much all our veggie garden areas, just in case.

If people are carving jack o’ lanterns, they may be too far gone Nov. 1 for livestock, but it might be worth a peek. Other decorations may include Indian corn and all those fancy/fugly gourds, though, and those are most likely still good for our critters.

Stash the gourds as long as possible if you have chickens. They can be valuable entertainment as well as fresh foods and the boosts of the mature seeds inside if the birds start developing cabin fever.

Goats can have those gourds smashed or split* and will munch them as well. Most domestic game birds aren’t really grazers, but they’ll happily poke through for the seeds.

*Indulge in fun here: Pop them up to entertain nephews with baseball bats or set up a backstop and lead catch for some target practice.

Corn can be ground or soaked for our critters. Or, we can hang it out piecemeal to keep our future-need squirrel farm going.

We could just drive around and scan for any hanging out of garbage bins, but consider leaving a short note ahead of time if you see those decorations.

“I noticed your lovely decorations, and was wondering what you plan to do with them after the season. I’ll pick them up if you plan to dispose of them,” can be fit on a business card or printed 8-12x on regular letter paper. (Sign it if you print it off – personalization can make a difference.)

If you don’t have a drop phone to give a number, create a generic email just for pop-up contacts. It doesn’t even have to reference preparedness, but it’s a good idea to have one (or twelve) for all kinds of networking.

After-Season Sales

The stores that sell that Indian corn and those gourds will usually drop their prices once they’ve been sitting out a while, and you may be able to ask a clerk when the display is coming down for an idea of when to see if they’ve just been tagged by a distributor/merchandiser and then pitched in a dumpster.

Somewhere approaching or just after Christmas those big bins of mixed nuts will also go on sale.

If you buy butter, your season, too, is coming. Hold out just a little longer and make some room in your freezer, because you may be able to find it for $2-$2.50 a pound again during the big baking seasons.

Finding candy on deep discounts even the day after is pretty rare where I am now, and even decorations and other goodies are getting harder to find with the fast swing between holiday promotions, but your area may be different and online you may find yourself a nice goldmine.

Of all places, Mill’s Fleet Farm has been a crazy good source for post-season sales and feeding somebody’s hard-to-find seasonal favorite for me.

Party supply stores like Oriental Trading Co. also regularly run free shipping promotions with no restrictions on order size and amount, and include discounted items. That runs from inexpensive and cheap (two different things) toys, ornaments, and activities as well as goodies to stash away in canning jars for a bad day.

I also sometimes see those goodies and the seasonal attire, decorations, tableware, candles/lamp oils, and activities at deep discounts in Tuesday Morning type second-chance stores the next week.

Consignment Shops & Classifieds

The change of seasons has a couple of benefits that will reach through to well after Christmas. Here in North America fishing and gardening season is winding down and suppliers sometimes have sales. We may not dive on those, but others do.

Those others sometimes recoup part of an upgrade by selling off their old gear, clothing to bows and reels, ATVs and boats to trailers and tree stands. That can net us supplies for pennies on the dollar.

We might hit flea markets and yard sales for some of those, but keeping an eye on local seller websites and doing quick cruises through Salvation Army, Goodwill, or thrift stores tends to be more productive (unless you just like people, want to get some extra exercise in, or have a dog to socialize – then, go for it all).

We can sometimes luck into really good gear donated solely because it didn’t fit anymore at the start of hunting season or really cold weather, or because a Christmas present led to making extra room.

I tend to keep an eye out specifically for the growing boys’ boots and hunting, camping, packing, and cold-weather gear, but it applies to regular street clothes as well. Some parents also have kids donate some portion of their old clothes and toys after the holiday bonanza, so it’s worth keeping an eye out if you have a little one or a particular interest.

Leaves Fall Down

Leaves are a big boost for those of us who can snag them from our own yards and neighbors.

Trees have nice deep roots, see, and all kinds of lovely micro-nutrients end up in those leaves. That makes for a really excellent compost (leaf mold), whether we bag them, add them to heaps/tumblers, or use them as mulches.

We can mow over them with a bagger (or strategically placed tarp or trash can) to get a head start in breaking them down, and they will deliver those nutrients even faster. Chipping or mowing them also makes them even better for use in worm bins and trenches.

Leaves can also help us protect young trees and tender perennials from the coming cold season. Sometimes we can just pile them up. Other times we may want to build a string or mesh cage around larger plants to help keep the leaves exactly where we want them.

In our own yards, leave some strategic piles and light layers here and there. Lots of beneficial insects use them for protection as the weather shifts.

So do slugs, though, which means we have to be mindful of where we use leaves as mulch.

The slugs and bugs are a benefit if we want to make a pile for covering our poultry runs, though. Pretty much all birds are delighted to rifle through leaves (and other mulches) looking for yummy hideouts.

Pre-Pre-Pre-Black Friday & Cyber Week

You won’t get me into a shopping area starting mid-November and I see fewer and fewer online sales that are all that good, but if you need to make a big-ticket purchase, it may be worth making an appearance on the Day(s) of Craze.

Maybe it’s a chipper-shredder to take more advantage of autumn pruning around the home, or maybe it’s the year you’re taking the plunge into solar or a generator. It might be as little as a couple of gas cans using the Harbor Freight coupon, or stocking up on pet food from Tractor Supply. Whatever it is, big or small, sometimes you can really make that trip into madness pay off.

Just stay extra alert for exhausted, drunk, and hungover people rushing to save money on the roads and in the lots.

You can also go out later on Black Friday afternoon. I got dragged out once about 10-12 years ago and it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Clerks look like they’re war-zone evacuees, it’s badly picked over, but the stupidity has largely died down to average weekend if not even weekday afternoon activity levels. Anecdotal evidence suggests it’s still so. (It’s apparently also still a really bad time to go to the movies, though.)

For online shopping, start tracking the price of things you might be interested in, from that low-price air gun to the new computer or mattress. Don’t hesitate to ask here and on subject-matter forums what others have paid.

Especially if it’s going on credit or a budget is tight, what seems like a great sale might not be.

If we know it’s only a difference of X or has hit that level six times previously in the last eighteen months, we can better prioritize if it’s worth the interest or hit to savings, or if we’ll be better served waiting a bit. Autumn has too much to offer for free and discount to blow budgets or get deeper in debt unnecessarily.
