Your Ship and How They Sleep!
I was tagged by @p0lkadotdotdot ! Thank you!
Now, I shall tag: @zenruu @zeraphias @alybeeyourself @rhithewitch @illusivesoul and @nerrels ! Anyone else who wants to take part as well, feel free! :D
💖 Selph & Alistair 💖
How often do they sleep together?
Ha, basically from night one once they leave Lothering with everyone in tow. Mainly b/c Reala (Selph's mabari) has a bit of a temperament in the beginning and shreds Selph's tent as a chew toy. And by process of elimination, Selph ends up sleeping in Alistair's tent. And with how watch schedules go, sometimes they end up together. It's awkward and adorable in the beginning, but they get used to one another quite fast. Soon enough, they don't want to sleep separately. 🥺
Where do they sleep?
In Origins it's, of course, mostly in the camp and their tent. As the story progresses, they sleep together in Eamon's castle/estate. Post Origins, they share a room together in Weisshaupt, but always push their beds together to make a full one until some other recruits finally get the hint and commission them a larger one for a gift to the Hero of Ferelden XD
How do they prepare to sleep?
Selph works too hard and often falls asleep at her desk or wherever she's up keeping watch. This prompts Alistair to carry her off to bed with a sigh, even though he's not really complaining, just worried for her and her health. Selph usually does her long hair up in a loose braid to keep it from strangling her, and if she hasn't done so, Alistair does it for her.
Selph does the same pampering for him if he gets busy and tied up in work, preparing/bringing him food to make sure he doesn't forget to eat or waking him to groggily head to bed. Once there, she makes him comfy and uses heat and healing spell combinations to ease his aches and muscles into a more relaxed state. Sometimes this has the opposite effect and things get a bit spicy 👀💦
What do they wear to sleep?
Mainly Alistair wears some shorts or his smalls, ever the furnace that he is, even in Weisshaupt. Selph likes to steal Alistair's tunics and wear those lol, otherwise she wears a simple chemise and her smalls with him. With a larger group or in the field she covers up (chemise, cover-up, breeches, etc) due to her scars and modesty. It's rather constricting some nights...and Alistair hates the layers between them.
Do they cuddle?
ALL 👏 THE 👏 TIME.
What are their preferred sleep positions?
Most of the time it's like the picture I shared above lol, but some days Alistair likes to be the small spoon, and Selph obliges, helping him relax with heating and cooling spells for his aches and pains.
How easy do they fall asleep?
Selph tends to "worry spiral" herself into sleep when she's alone, exhausting her mind before her body. Alistair falls asleep easily no matter what, it seems, especially with a full stomach lol. Together is best, as his presence helps Selph calm down faster and easier for a restful sleep. And he's like a free heater.
Do they toss and turn a lot?
During their warden nightmares, yes, unfortunately. Alistair tends to roll more than Selph, but when they're together they find a comfy niche and stay put.
Do they snore?
If Selph's sitting upright in a chair or something, then yes. But Alistair is the crowned king in this department no matter what 🙄
Who hogs the blanket?
They both tend to fight over it in their sleep, but if either wake up, they tuck the other in or cover them both up to the best of their ability and snuggle up.
What do they dream about?
Selph often has nightmares of her past combined with the warden nighmare mess, so it's hard for her to say she dreams good things, often. With Alistair's presence, she has dreamless nights, and that's okay with her--at least she gets a restful sleep. The remnants of the patience spirit turned rage demon that possessed her don't really allow her to have the best of sleeps, unfortunately.
Alistair has the occasional nightmare and of course has the warden issue as well, but with Selph he always sleeps and dreams good things. She thinks she's cursed earlier on, but he assures her that she brings him the best dreams. And you can take that however you wish lol ;)
How easily do they wake up?
Selph's an early bird, but takes some time to stretch and get some breakfast--often toasted bread with honey or some fresh fruit. She prepares something for Alistair as well once he stumbles out of bed for the morning, as he's gotten used to being on Selph's schedule most days, missing her presence in bed once he notices she's up and about.
How awake they are afterwards?
Selph is fine, as she's used to being up and about and busy, but Alistair needs a little pick-me-up, hence Selph making him breakfast, tea, or whatever he needs to start his day. Alistair doesn't mind being up early with her, though. That way he can get more time with her in the long run :3

The women of Iran are dancing. Women blinded, with one eye, or one arm, are dancing. Iranian Kurds are dancing. Across Europe, Iranian dissidents are dancing. Iranians – often, relatives of the regime’s victims – are drinking to show their joy. The daughters of Minoo Majidi, a mother shot dead by security services during the 2022 protests, shared a video of them raising a glass to President Raisi’s death.
Dark humour – the jokes of an oppressed people – are circulating. “Mr Raisi, you surprised us. We have no tapas for our drinks,” chuckles one Iranian in a celebratory video on social media. There was the gag about how a Mossad agent called “Eli Copter” had caused the crash. People have handed out cakes and sweets in public squares – an act of symbolic importance in Persian culture, often associated with joyous events. Celebratory fireworks filled the skies in Iranian cities.
Such courage is all the more impressive given how little Raisi’s death is likely to change anything in this closed prison of a society. It may somewhat alter the succession, since he had been one of the men tipped to succeed Khamenei, but the Ayatollahs retain their stranglehold. The bravery of anyone involved in any celebration or act of civil disobedience such as removing a headscarf, is astounding. Those letting off fireworks or handing out sweets are risking their lives.
History will remember Raisi as a squalid tyrant who took a twisted pride in human suffering. He was involved in the torture and extrajudicial murder of thousands of political prisoners held in Iranian jails and the mass killings of opponents in 1988, when as many as 30,000 are believed to have lost their lives. As Mariam Memarsadeghi wrote in a chilling article for Tablet magazine, “virgins were systematically raped before their execution, to circumvent the Islamic prohibition on killing virgins and to prevent women and girls from reaching heaven”.
And yet, the BBC posted about “President Ebrahim Raisi’s mixed legacy in Iran”. You can imagine the 1945 headlines about the mixed legacy of “motorway-builder, vegetarian rights enthusiast and dog-lover” Adolf Hitler, or that of “inspirational plus-size influencer” Hermann Goering. Reuters described how Raisi “rose through Iran’s theocracy from hardline prosecutor to uncompromising president, as he burnished his credentials to position himself to become the next supreme leader”.
Reading such things you would think Raisi was, at worst, a slight renegade. A cheeky chappie in a kaftan whose loss will be felt by light entertainment for generations. They tweeted like he was Rod Hull – rather than, you know, someone nicknamed “the Butcher of Tehran”. But in the real world, faced with the real consequences of the regime he ran, people are dancing.
It wasn’t just the BBC in its classic “tightrope walk” mode, either. Things were getting a bit Candle in the Wind at the UN, as the entire Security Council (including both the UK and US representatives) stood to observe a minute of silence for President Raisi. Goodbye Tehran’s rose.
European Council president Charles Michel tweeted out his sincere condolences, while the “European Commissioner for Crisis Management” committed the EU’s Copernicus satellite system to help locate Raisi’s helicopter, in the name of “#EUSolidarity”.
Lest we forget, Johan Floderus, a young EU official from Sweden, has been incarcerated at Iran’s notorious Evin prison for more than two years. We don’t see much “#EUSolidarity” coming from the other direction. Not to be undone, President Higgins of Ireland channelled the spirit of Eamon de Valera c.1945, by offering his “deepest sympathies” upon the death of a tyrant.
Such statements go well beyond basic diplomacy. Nobody asked anyone to gush; they chose to. The message it sends is a slap in the face to those bravely putting their lives on the line for freedom. But it’s par for the course in what is (sometimes optimistically) termed the “international community”.
Speaking of which, on Monday, the International Criminal Court put out joint bids for arrest warrants for the leaders of Hamas and the prime minister and defence minister of Israel. Given that the ICC has no jurisdiction, nor power of its own to arrest anyone, there was something bleakly comic about the manner of the announcement. Chief prosecutor Karim Khan delivered his statement flanked by a couple of glaring bureaucrats. The ICC appeared to be putting on its best “don’t mess with us” face. It looked like a geriatric version of Bugsy Malone.
The ICC application refers, pointedly, to the “territory of Israel” and the “state of Palestine”, which makes it clear which side its bread is buttered. It notably ignores Hamas’s use of human shields, surely a factor when assessing the civilian death toll. It even holds Israel entirely responsible for “closing the three border crossing points” after October 7.
Yet Hamas destroyed the Erez crossing, murdering its operators and blowing up the barriers separating it from the Gaza strip. Small wonder border checkpoints weren’t up and running immediately. Condemning Israel for this is grotesque; gaslighting on an international scale.
The timing is also telling. We have known about the crimes of October 7 from day one, thanks to the body-cams Hamas terrorists so proudly wore to document their butchery. Yet the ICC waited until May 2024 to condemn both Israel and Hamas on the same day. The effect is to suggest a moral equivalence between a democratic state and a genocidal terrorist group that says it wants to repeat the atrocities of October 7 indefinitely. You don’t have to believe Israel is above criticism – and nor should we – to recognise this.
Multinational organisations like the ICC are often held up as moral arbiters in themselves, when they will only be as virtuous or corrupt as their component member states, and reflecting the same biases. The World Health Organisation has long excluded Taiwan from its membership due to Chinese pressure. A ruinous decision, when Taiwan’s early warnings about the risks of human-to-human transmission of Covid in late 2019 were ignored. Something is rotten in the state of many international bodies and moral courage is in short supply.
Given such a clear-cut case of evil as Raisi, the mealy-mouthed global response does not bode well. For genuine bravery, we can look to the people at the sharp end of such regimes. Because still, in the midst of it all, the women of Iran dance.

Roleswap AU: Mage!Alistair and Ex-Templar! Warden Amell:
The way it works is this: Alistair's sad childhood functioned exactly as it did in canon. He grows up in Redcliffe, gets shipped off to Templar Boarding School at age ten. Except for one major difference: early on in templar training, Alistair discovers he's a mage.
Now, from here, the AU can progress two ways: either Alistair is swiftly found out and shipped off to the Circle, and all the nobles sigh in relief because Alistair's no longer a threat to Cailan. Or, Alistair successfully hides it from the templars until somebody rats him out in time for Duncan to recruit him.
Let's start for the former option, but either way, the Fifth Blight eventually starts. But being both a mage and a Grey Warden probably would prevent Alistair from inheriting altogether. Which is a problem because as in canon, Cailan has no heir. So, Circle Mage! Alistair never undertakes the Joining; instead, Duncan forms a pact with Arl Eamon. In exchange for Arl Eamon throwing his support behind the Wardens, Duncan will jailbreak Alistair out of the Circle and drag him to Ostagar.
As how to the jailbreak/kidnapping occurs, there are a variety of ways. Since Ser Greagoir probably recognizes all of his men on sight, just donning templar armor and grabbing Alistair that way likely wouldn't work. Duncan could conscript Alistair, but even assuming that goes well, people at Ostagar would notice when Duncan (as per the agreement with Arl Eamon) doesn't follow through.
So, Duncan subcontracts part of the job to Jowan in exchange for Jowan and Lily's (successful) escape. Instead of Jowan and Lily, Duncan has Ser Drass (that guy from the Desire Demon room and the Notice of Censure) and a competent Warden mage sneak into the basement and destroy Jowan's phylactery instead.
Meanwhile, Jowan guilts Alistair into doing the original escape plan, at least up until Alistair and co have to "enter the basement". Because of which, Greagoir and Irving still believe that Jowan, Lily, and Alistair are acting on their own, and will thus be lying in wait for Jowan and Lily, not Drass and a Warden mage.
This also has the benefit of Alistair showing up to the basement with a Rod of Fire for the real Team Destroy Jowan's Phylactery to use. Where, at the same time, Duncan shows up, nabs Alistair, and tosses him into a boat with Jowan and Lily, who then row a confused and shocked Alistair across Lake Calenhad.
Then, Drass and the Warden mage are "caught" by a thoroughly floored Irving and Greagoir. Now, in order to break into the basement, the Warden mage has to have been through the Harrowing, but it's doubtful they've ever set foot in Kinloch Hold before (otherwise they wouldn't be a Warden). Meaning Irving and Greagoir will not recognize them. Thus, while Drass can just whine about how he hates templar life as "explanation", the Warden mage will face more scrutiny.
The probable solution to which is that the Warden mage will claim to be a recently captured blood mage/ maleficar. (The "maleficar" part might even be true, b/c the Wardens). They'll do some harmless but suitable body puppeting through blood magic to prove it, and then-Duncan strides in.
And, like in canon, Duncan "conscripts" Drass and the Warden mage, b/c, he was (partially) here to get more assistance with the Blight. (Although in Drass's case the Conscription is actually real). This pisses both Irving and Greagoir off, but they can't do anything about it. Thus, Alistair and the (knowing) conspirators leave for Ostagar scot-free. Alistair is thoroughly confused and pissed off at being kidnapped, but aside from that, everyone is relatively happy. Jowan and Lily get to live their cottagecore dream, Drass (if Antoine and Evka are any indication) has a chance at domestic bliss, and the Warden mage got to stick it to the Chantry. And Duncan has now fulfilled his end of the bargain to Arl Eamon. (Which means, of course, that Irving and Greagoir get even more pissed when they realize that they can't find Alistair, Jowan, or Lily.)
As for ex-Templar! Warden Amell? Well, she had a happy childhood in Kirkwall, then decided to join the templars as a teen, but (like Alistair) realized she had certain ethical qualms with the way mages were treated. Thus, she quit and joined the Grey Wardens. (Not nearly as good as Alistair's backstory), but hey, roleswap. As for the alternative, this post is too long. I'll probably explain it in a sequel post.

Saw all the cool (?) kids doing this on booktube for their 2023 reading, and while I don't think a tiermaker style chart is quite right for comparing some of these books (like how am I supposed to compare The Haunting of Hill House with like. How to Resist Amazon and Why?)
Anyways, S tier is my personal biases, just my absolute faves of the year, no notes. A tier is very good, would recommend to basically any reader without caveats. B tier is "If you're really into this type of thing or have the necessary historiographical context and use your critical thinking skills (as relevant), solid read, worth your time". C tier is like. I've read much worse, but honestly disappointing, though there were at least a few redeeming qualities. D tier is no, definitely skip.
I'm still figuring out how well storygraph works to non-users, but if you're curious to see any further details on these books: https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/ovvlish
Titles and authors in the order they appear, because the images are small. For the manga, some I started this year, others are ongoing reads for me, and I only included one volume of each. All told it was 65 books, so you can see I read a lot of tankubon!
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries - Heather Fawcett
Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) - Yana Toboso
Gideon the Ninth | Harrow the Ninth | Nona the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir
The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson

Note
So my boy Eamon is really busy huh. The only time he had a break, he went to see Nic and friends. In my delulu mind, the songs Nic shared were for someone who is not in close proximity atm. As a millennial, that’s how I convey my feelings to someone I don’t get to see and talk a lot.
