Wesleyan Data Visualization: week 1 assignment
I’ve selected the Mars crater data set for my analysis. After reviewing the variables available, I selected these research questions:
Is [LATITUTUDE_CIRCLE_IMAGE] associated with [DEPTH_RIMFLOOR_TOPOG] ?
Is [LATITUTUDE_CIRCLE_IMAGE] also associated with [NUMBER_OF_LAYERS] ?
After a literature review, my hypothesis is that there is an association between crater depth and number of layers in a crater and the latitude of the crater.
Literature Review: Google Scholar search for "crater depth latitude"
Latitude dependence of Martian pedestal craters: Evidence for a sublimation-driven formation mechanism http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2008JE003318/full Journal of Goephysical Research 10/1/2009 Seth J. Kadish, Nadine G. Barlow, James W. Head
Summary: Craters on Mars that formed in latitudes with a more oblique angle to the sun have more ice layers in the ground and therefore impacts there create more "pedestal" craters. The oblique areas have more layers of ice.

The spatial distribution of volatiles in the Martian hydrolithosphere https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00057747 Earth, Moon, and Planets 5/11/1999 François M. Costard
Summary: Craters on Mars in high latitutdes have more volatiles and this affects the shape of the craters.

Distribution of Mid-Latitude Ground Ice on Mars from New Impact Craters http://science.sciencemag.org/content/325/5948/1674 Science 9/25/2009 Shane Byrne1,*, Colin M. Dundas1, Megan R. Kennedy2, Michael T. Mellon3, Alfred S. McEwen1, Selby C. Cull4, Ingrid J. Dau
Summary: Images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show that recent Martian impacts in middle latitudes reveal sublimating ice from clean ice layers, not just ice in soil pores. Also, some craters show that below the clean ice layer are other types of ice and soil mixtures.
