He shook his head, glancing back out through the wide glass before stepping away from it. "It is an unfortunate constant of humanity that we include and uplift and care for all we can... until suddenly, the difference is too great. In the blink of an eye, the line between pitiable and evil is crossed, and for all that we wish to be seen as better..." He hated it. He would live with the guilt of his own failure for the rest of his life, and as much as it painted him, likely would be unable to find a moment of understanding for those who had stood in his way. "The ones who need our help the most, the great devil-figures of our history. The Klingons, the Romulans, the Borg. And truly, no meaningful differences. Merely a line in the sand." He looked terribly, overwhelmingly sad for a moment, before the feeling was buried again.

Swys de Bruin commits for further two years

Rudolf Straeuli, CEO of the Lions Rugby Company, can confirm that Emirates Lions coach Swys de Bruin has committed to the LRC for another two years.

“Swys (de Bruin) will remain at the Lions and has extended his contract until 2021 with the Franchise. Lions Rugby remains a system driven Franchise focused on stability within the structures of our players and coaches,” Straeuli said.

Brink back for Sharks clash

Emirates Lions flanker Cyle Brink makes his return to the playing field this weekend after seven months on the side-line with a knee injury for the big clash with the Cell C Sharks at Emirates Airline Park on Friday

The injury, sustained during a Springbok training session, was a bit of a freak accident as someone fell on him during training and he tore his right patella tendon just below the knee cap.

The Lions will celebrate Lionel Mapoes’ 99th Vodacom Super Rugby match for the union on Friday. The experienced winger joined the Lions back in 2011 and have gone on to score 29 tries for the men in red and white.

After six matches, the Lions have scored 25 tries, second to the Crusaders on 29. The teams who have scored the most tries up to now:

Should it be so for Data as well. "I appreciate your willingness to sacrifice yourself for the safety of the crew, Data, but I'm afraid I simply don't see it that way. Your existence is no less important than that of any other crew member." Privately, he could admit that Data might even be more important to him. "I need you here."

Jean Luc squeezed his eyes closed and rubbed his temples as he leaned forward toward his computer interface again. When he opened them to look at the map, their situation hadn't changed and he didn't look any more hopeful. "I'm afraid, Data, that we've come to a crossroads. No matter what we do, I don't see a positive outcome. And yet, we must do something."

They couldn't continue onward without harming the Federation citizens in their way or putting their crew and passengers at risk. They couldn't turn back without putting their charges in a delayed, but much greater danger from their own government. And then to factor in the opinions of the Romulan senate and Star Fleet's standing orders and mission... "Tell me, am I missing something obvious?"

He had been two glasses in (synthehol unfortunately) when he'd looked up at the flash of light and met Q's gaze across the table. After that, he'd told Q to go away, threatened to call security, insulted them, and finally, when it seemed they were here to stay and Jean Luc wasn't going to be swept off into some terrible adventure, sighed and pushed himself up. He returned with a bottle and a pair of fresh glasses. It wasn't as though he was going to get a better chance to not drink alone, as he'd been instructed. When he sat back down, it was on the same side of the table as Q, knees touching. "It's from my family's vineyard," he began again, sounding exhausted. "Good year. Or good enough, at least. Forty seven."

Q's words are as grandiose as ever, and yet it's their softness that conveys their quaking sincerity.

Don't think on his impermanence, the deity tells himself. On the way his gait grows uneven and his skin frail, despite his legendary, unmatched self-restraint. You can at least last long enough to go hand-in-hand with him, into the Unknown.

For it's not only Q who is Jean-Luc's teacher; the reverse is also true. Why else would the creature beyond a lifetime, beyond a corporeality, choose to assume a form that delicately, carefully mimics the rank, age, and ability of his guinea pig? There's more respect in that than is immediately apparent.

Jean Luc hadn't ever heard Q speak so softly. At least, not in exactly the same way. His own face softened in response, tension melting away when confronted by the solid (?) proof that Q wasn't actually gone.

He reached out, just to be sure, resting his hand on Q's upper arm. When he felt warm muscles beneath his palm, the texture of the being's ridiculous, reassuring admiral's uniform catching on the skin of his too-dry fingertips, Jean Luc could have sobbed with relief. He contained his reaction to a sharp inhale, a step forward, and a squeeze, the touch conveying more gratitude for this particular bending of the rules than his words ever would.

"Your foil, am I?" The corner of his mouth lifted in a smile, and he lifted his eyes to meet Q's gaze. "In that case, you're right. It would be practically unforgivable for the universe to ruin your story by tearing us apart so early."
