Halo isn't exactly a big name in the drone room. The company started selling hoverboards that (much to our disappointment) are not floating technically. Shortly after the company had achieved success in the mobile technology business, it switched to drones (which luckily hover) and now offers a quadcopter called Halo Drone Pro: a revamped version of its full-fledged flying machine at full price. We ran a test to see how it could assert itself against UAVs from well-known drone companies like DJI and Yuneec.
What's in the box
The Halo Drone Pro arrived in its own high-performance hardback backpack and immediately impressed us with its gunmetal gray plastic housing, which immediately reminded us of something that you could fly in the actual Halo video game – only without weapons.
Fortunately, the Halo drone is at least equipped with a 4K camera that can capture still images and videos. The remote control has a nice, classic RC airplane look & feel with precise, responsive metal analog sticks and a variety of mysterious buttons. In the cave-like backpack there are many small devices that belong to the drone.
It looked like something you could fly in the actual halo video game – just without weapons.
There is the follow-up module that acts as a beacon for the drone – provided it has a direct line of sight with GPS satellites. There's a vague James Bond-like wrist controller and Wi-Fi module that you need to plug into the back of the controller to stream videos to your phone. Halo even includes two additional rotors for those of us who tend to break them.
Playing with the Halo Drone Pro has two different sides. Flying is obviously a key element to enjoying a drone, and it's a lot of fun to zoom through the sky with halo. The other side, however, is all you need to do before you can actually blow the drone up. It's definitely less fun here.
Sync city
All of these things in the handy bag need to be synced before you can do anything, and as so often, pairing the Halo Drone's peripheral heap with your mobile device can be a huge pain. With an Android-based Samsung Note 8, it was a constant struggle to quickly sync the controller, Wi-Fi transmitter, follow module, and drone itself and play well together. To make matters worse, we had to go through this rigmarole every time we wanted to fly the drone.
This meant connecting to the drone's Wi-Fi network (it always took a few minutes to find), waiting for the app to find the controller and drone's Bluetooth signal, and making sure the Follow module was clear Line of sight to the sky has for a GPS signal. If you want to use the watch controller, you must ensure that it is synchronized instead of the main controller, since it cannot be operated at the same time.
The actual app (and you need to use the mobile app to use the Halo drone) is anything but intuitive, especially with synchronization issues. However, it is easy to argue that the user interface is denser and more complicated because it is a "pro" drone. In any case, Halo could work with a UI expert to optimize, among other things, the synchronization and calibration process.
Learn to fly
If everything works, however, the halo has a lot to offer. It is a robust device that continued to chug despite some glitches caused by pilot errors. At some point when we got the controls under control, we accidentally let them buzz right into the side of the house, causing a painful series of crashes and crunches. We lost a rotor thanks to this mishap, but the drone itself was still perfectly fine.

Another questionable piece of flying was caused, at least in part, by an error in the video signal. The video feed is not very sharp and sharp, although this drone is equipped with a 4K camera. The video quality when played on a TV or other screen is just fine, but not exceptional. The picture quality is better on bright sunny days (of which there were almost none during testing), but the camera has real problems with poor lighting conditions that plague the winter months here.
Even worse, despite the Wi-Fi broadcast package, there is a noticeable delay in the video feed of approximately one and a half seconds. This means that you really can't fly it over the video feed and are forced to visually lock the Halo drone while you are floating around.
Robust enough to suffer a fall
I spectacularly discovered the delay in the Halo drone's video playback as I mischievously tried to follow my child through the back yard. After flying perfectly for a few minutes, I suddenly heard a terrible crunch and wail as the drone was caught in high, dead vegetation on the edge of the property – even though the video on my phone screen hadn't yet arrived there. Strangely enough, as bad as it sounded from a distance, it didn't even lose a rotor then, although my child is now making fun of my poor piloting skills.

Had I been a smarter human father type, I would have simply strapped the sequencer to her arm and let her run amok while the drone kept pace from a distance. Personally, I'm not sure what people use the following module for to be honest, but I have to assume that they are things that contain the word "extreme". I just ran the drone like a swimming dog that, unlike my actual dog, doesn't hunt cars / cats / other people on every occasion. In retrospect, a drone that hunts people could have real entertainment value where I live.
If it doesn't crash, the Halo drone is a blast. It's fast (up to 75 km / h), agile and responsive. You can get a faster rig if you choose a racing drone, but the halo feels just fast enough to be exciting for non-racers without sacrificing controllability.
Whether you zoom high above the treetops that surround my house or tighten the floor because I'm a terrible person who laughs madly while scaring ducks, the Halo drone flies great. It also hovers very well. The broadcast time easily reached about 45 minutes under normal conditions. Even at freezing temperatures, the halo ran without problems for over half an hour. That's an insanely good battery life for a drone this size.
Cables … cables everywhere
However, charging is a bit of a hassle, especially if you use all the add-ons. The camera is generally charged from the Halo drone's battery, which didn't seem to cause any problems. However, we have found that charging the main drone battery (using only one battery) takes several hours. Even worse, there's a single charger with multiple charge heads for the remote and drone battery – and you can't charge both things at the same time.

This basically means that after discharging the battery, you have to wait at least six hours for all the batteries to be fully charged. A positive note is that the remote control only needs to be charged after several flights. Odder is still the alligator clip-like charger for the next module and wrist control. Again, only one is included, which means that you are forced to charge them one at a time – although during our tests it only took about an hour to juice them both. The Halo shows a clear lack of optimized usability here, not to mention many cables.
The range of the controller is specified at 1 kilometer. However, thanks to its mobile GPS functions, you can set routes that the drone should follow – either by simply tapping point A to point B on the map or complex routes by setting waypoints.
Our opinion
The $ 1,000 drone market is incredibly competitive and developing rapidly. Unfortunately, the Halo Drone Pro just can't keep up. At $ 1,100, this drone costs just as much as some of the best UAVs in the world, but it also lacks some of the bells and whistles that have become standard on drones that cost half the price – especially avoiding objects.
With the ability to follow routes, program, and return to its hometown, the Halo offers some nice features and has certainly proven to be durable, but is still not as complete as some of the other top tier deals in this price range .
Are there any better alternatives?
Yes. With $ 1,100 you can get a damn good drone these days. When you are ready to spend this type of money, you have many options.
First and foremost, we recommend a look at the DJs Mavic Pro and Mavic Air. Both are compact, durable and absolutely packed with functions. You have obstacle avoidance, foldable form factors, excellent flight performance and smarter flight modes than you can imagine. At $ 999 and $ 799, respectively, they're a little cheaper than the Halo Drone Pro.
The Phantom 4 by DJI is also a solid competitor here, as is the Yuneec Typhoon H. Both have a comparable price to the Halo Drone Pro, but offer superior handling and more functions. They're also a lot less fussy to use and don't require as many tricky peripherals. However, it is worth noting that the Halo drone has outlasted both the P4 and the Typhoon H in our flight tests. So if you're looking for long flight times, Halo may be the way to go.
How long it will take?
This is a tough call. Since the Halo drone itself is quite robust and spare parts are available on the Internet, the hardware and the essential components of the drone should definitely pass the test of time.
On the other hand, Halo couldn't stay in the drone business forever. The UAV market is incredibly competitive right now. If Halo doesn't get stuck, chances are it will stop its drone. This would mean that firmware patches, error corrections or software updates are no longer required. To be fair, it's all speculation and we have no way of knowing whether Halo will stay in the drone game or not, but there is something to be aware of.
If the company decides to jump a ship, this drone will age quickly and become obsolete in a few years.
Should you buy it
Probably not. You can get more for your money elsewhere.

The Scroll subscription service is an ingenious web technology hack
Welcome back to Processor, a newsletter about computers and also sometimes other things. You are probably expecting me to spend several paragraphs making fun of Google for creating yet another messaging product, as The Information reported yesterday. Not gonna do it: it’s enterprise-focused and from what I can tell about Google’s cloud business right now, a haphazard message app strategy is the least of their worries. Instead, the thing that blew my mind yesterday was Scroll, a new $5 per month subscription service that gives you a bunch of websites without ads. I kept on experiencing successive waves of small revelations when I thought about it. I’ll disclose now that Vox Media (and therefore The Verge) are partners, but I had no idea this service existed until it was announced yesterday. First: although I don’t have any specific reason to distrust Scroll, this still feels like a data privacy time bomb. Scroll won’t sell my data, but what if the company that snaps up Scroll does someday? There’s a prominent button for deleting your data, at least. Scroll’s privacy policy is refreshingly readable and candid about what it gathers and what it does and doesn’t share — including being honest about sharing information with governments when required to by law. It also notes that your data could go along with a sale of the company itself. Basically I suggest you find the “delete your information” button and remember where it is. Second: Scroll’s entire method of stopping ads is an absolutely ingenious repurposing of third-party cookies. You log into Scroll, it sets a cookie, and then the websites you visit see that special cookie and don’t serve you ads. It’s not even ad-blocking, they just don’t get served. It is actually quite elegant, but if you take a second to think through the chain of communications and deals that are required to make it that elegant, it seems like a hellacious hack. Then again, as Nilay Patel said to me today, isn’t most web technology a hellacious hack? There are a few more details — Safari in particular is stricter than other browsers and so it requires an extension. Brave will also need some extra effort to work with Scroll. (Scroll has a snarky footnote about them.) Third: it’s a much easier solution for websites to get paid than asking each of them to roll their own subscription. It tracks where you visit and automatically divvies payment up between those partner sites. I could (and eventually will) quibble about the percentage Scroll is taking: $1.50 out of $5, or thirty percent. As an independent startup, I’m not going to begrudge Scroll its revenue, and it likely needs a bigger cut to stay in business than Apple or Google do on their App Stores. If the company hits scale, though, I’d like to hope that it will find a way to reduce that cut. Fourth: hang on let’s think about that hellacious hack again! Although you have to constantly have Scroll email you a “magic link” and then ensure you open it in the right browser, it means that you are getting your paid-for ad-free experience in the app of your choosing. Unlike Apple News (disclosure: another Vox Media partner), you aren’t forced into a not-especially-great app. You don’t get a link that seems like it goes to a web page but actually just goes to Apple’s app. You can also use it on any device you own, not just Apple’s products. Also unlike Apple News, this subscription isn’t really a subscription. For publications that put articles behind paywalls, Scroll won’t get you in. On the whole, though, I much prefer Scroll’s system to Apple News. It works better with the existing web and the existing apps we all use to navigate it. A subscription system that turns off ads, pays publishers, and doesn’t lock me into any particular app while also doing a pretty good job of keeping my login active? Seems good to me. Still, I’m not quite going to go quite so far as to endorse Scroll (and not just because Vox Media is a partner). Deciding to sign up is between you, your level of trust in Scroll’s privacy policies, your ad-blocking conscience, whether you care about the current list of partner publications, and the cost. Fifth: Scroll puts a white bar at the bottom of every webpage it’s active on, ostensibly so you have the benefit of getting share links and an audio reader mode. No thank you times a thousand, Scroll. However, one benefit of using web browsers instead of Apple News is that web browsers are relatively open platforms and so you can use them to alter the web pages you visit (at least on the desktop — on mobile things are still often locked down). So, for example, I have a little script that I cobbled together after a day of Googling that makes it easier for me to format the links in this newsletter by automatically changing the web page I store them on, Pinboard.in. My favorite method is an extension called Tampermonkey. I wrote a little script for it that hides Scroll’s annoying bar. Other than some preliminary settings, it’s literally one line. It should work in Chromium-based browsers. Here it is, offered with zero support and absolutely no guarantees that it’s any good at all. Bonus sixth revelation: Tampermonkey offers a Google Drive-based sync, and since Microsoft’s new Edge browser runs on Chromium, my script auto-synced from Chrome on a Mac to Edge on Windows and Just Worked. The Internet! Sometimes it’ll surprise you.

Bad Battery Advice?
Do You Give or Follow Bad Battery Advice?
“That battery is about to explode!”
That’s the second time in recent months I’ve had to give someone bad news about why their laptop had an ugly bulge and why its performance had plummeted. I then suggested they quickly power it off and take immediate action. On the inside, however, I wanted to scream “Get that bomb out of my office, NOW!”
When they returned later in the day with a replacement, they shared some advice they’d received on preventing a recurrence. A misinformed technician instructed them to fully discharge the laptop battery on a regular basis. This triggered another fit of screaming (albeit, inside my head). While not as dangerous as an exploding lithium battery, such bad advice is destructive. And I’m dismayed at the number of people—even those with a technical background—who perpetuate such horrible advice.
To combat destructive and dangerous advice, I’ve assembled best practices on charging your devices. Most of you want the bottom line and don’t want to get deep into the weeds. But if one of the few that wants the research behind the advice, I’ve listed resources at the end of this article.
What Kind of Batteries?
Modern devices like your smartphone, tablets, laptops, etc. use lithium-ion batteries (also known as lithium polymer, Li-ion, and LIB). The advice in this article is for lithium-ion batteries only. The chemistries of lead-acid batteries, alkaline batteries, NiCad batteries, etc. are very different. Some of the bad advice that’s being given or followed for lithium-ion batteries comes from confusing and mixing advice from legacy battery types.

Overcharging is probably the worst thing you can do to a lithium-ion battery, because that can lead to fires and ruptures. The good news is that major manufacturers take great pains to build in multiple safeguards to prevent overcharging. So, overcharging is normally not a concern. When “smart” charging is used, the power to the battery is cut off to prevent damage or danger. Not all manufacturers are conscientious, however, and the cheap Chinese hoverboards popular in 2015 and 2016 omitted overcharging protections. This led to them spontaneously combusting and was a contributing factor to being banned. Consequently, I will not buy equipment that has warnings to unplug a device once it is fully charged. This is a bad sign they’ve gone the cheap route and have omitted overcharging protections.
Not that devices with “smart” charging are immune to overcharging. Even mainstream products can sometimes be flawed. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone became infamous for the explosions and fires it caused. And Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. have also made battery recalls. On the upside, these defects tend to be identified early and “up front.”
Prevent Overcharging
To prevent overcharging you should use quality chargers and cables. For Apple products, that means cables that are labeled as MFi certified. If I specifically need an Apple brand item (e.g., the HDMI lightning adapter), I buy them from a major retailer because I’ve had issues with counterfeits on Amazon.com (see article in sidebar). USB-C is another cable standard that’s suffered from quality woes.
But even if you’re not using a special cable, it’s still important to use quality components. Don’t buy cables or chargers from the local drugstore, gas station, or bargain bin. Not only is this important for the safety of your device, cheap components often deliver a weak and unstable power flow and can take longer to charge your device.
One way to ensure quality is to use the products provided by the device’s manufacturer. But there are also plenty of reputable third party sources that are just as good (or better) and can save you money. One of my favorite brands for chargers and cables is Anker and their products can be found in my home, vehicle, office, and backpack—as well as for my family, friends and relatives since I've given Anker products as gifts, too. I’ve also been happy with Monoprice brand cables. And I have heard good things about Amazon Basics as well, although I’ve been so happy with Anker I haven't been able to verify as many Amazon Basics myself.
Overcharging Danger Signs
Since there’s a chance even a major brand can have defective lithium-ion batteries, be on the lookout for danger signs, especially when you first acquire a new device. A bulge from a swelling battery is a red flag that something is horribly wrong. Extreme heat is the other indicator of an issue. Fast charging a battery normally makes the battery warm to the touch, but if it is getting extremely or painfully hot, that’s not normal. In the opening scenario I mentioned a third symptom, which is directly related to the heat problem. If your device is running really slow, it could be due thermal throttling. The faster a processor runs, the more heat it generates, so some devices slow down to avoid damaging temperatures. Unfortunately, in my opening example, the source of the dangerous heat was the battery and not the processor.
Keep Your Cool, But Not COLD
Like the processor, lithium-ion batteries don’t like heat. Leaving a device on your dashboard on a summer day is a good way to shorten the lifespan of a lithium-ion battery. Doing a fast-charge under those circumstances could lead to even more trouble. On the opposite extreme, lithium-ion batteries don’t hold a charge well in freezing temperatures. In the winter, I store my phone in an inside pocket, instead of an outside pocket, so it benefits from body heat. It turns out lithium-ion batteries like room temperatures just like humans—not too cold and not too hot.
Don’t Hit Empty
The most common and destructive practice I see is letting the battery hit empty. Lithium-ion batteries hate being fully discharged, and you damage it each time you let these batteries run dry. If done frequently, this reduces the charge your battery can store or deliver, and it eventually destroys the battery. The reason most people allow a full discharge is probably inattention, so it’s hard to provide an effective countermeasure other than “charge frequently.” I suspect that sometimes this destructive behavior is a holdover from the charging technique used on NiCad batteries to prevent the “memory effect.” However, this does NOT apply to lithium-ion batteries, so don’t let them hit empty!
Another source of the bad “full discharge” advice is a misunderstanding of battery calibration. Modern devices use sophisticated calculations to estimate remaining battery life. One way to improve those estimations is to recalibrate its monitoring by letting the charge run low (BUT NOT OUT). My recommendation is to only recalibrate when your device’s estimations are consistently and significantly off. And even then, don’t let the charge drop below 5%. This buffer is important because a lithium-ion battery discharges more quickly at the end of its spectrum. You could accidentally hit a damaging full discharge, especially if your device’s estimations are off.

While on the topic of charging, I wanted to clarify how charging cycles work. All batteries have a finite lifespan, and for lithium-ion it is typically measured in cycles. If a battery is rated for 1,500 cycles, it means it should survive to do 1,500 full recharges. A cycle is NOT consumed each time a device is connected to a charger. Instead it is the measure of a recharge that brings a battery from 0% to 100% full. Therefore, if a battery drops to 75% and then gets fully recharged, only a quarter of one cycle has transpired. If the next day the battery drops to 80% and then gets fully recharged, then only a fifth of one cycle has transpired. For those two days, that’s a cumulative 45% of just one of the cycles.

Because modern quality devices have safeguards to prevent overcharging, a full discharge is the more likely problem people will face. Therefore, charging your iPhone overnight is not something to be feared or avoided. Devices with a smart charger or battery cut the power and stop charging when they get full. Therefore, my advice is to plug such devices into a charger whenever it is available. Of course, the manufacturer’s instructions and advice on charging should take precedence. This is especially important for off-brand and cheap devices which may lack overcharging protections.
Another option, although a bit impractical (especially since it is only minimally better for the battery) is to perform charging based on level. If you don’t find this practice too extreme, then let your device get to 50% remaining before recharging. And then, when you do recharge don’t let it reach 100%—instead disconnect it when it reaches 80% or 90% full.
Personally, I don’t like heading out the door with a device at 50% capacity. If I’m on the move for too long I could hit empty because I was unable to charge it. I have found no discernable lifespan improvement between the two charging methods. So why not choose the method with the better convenience? For the past decade, across a number of my devices, I’ve seen the empirical evidence that supports the “always charge” method. No device had to be replaced or repaired due to battery issues. In fact, they tended to live a bit too long, since they survived well into obsolescence (sigh—first world problems).
