this will forever be the funniest moment in final fantasy xiv to me. you are a bright young officer of the globe-spanning evil empire. over the last few months you've watched the entire empire crumble from the edges inward after the former crown prince killed his father and seized the throne so he could redirect the state toward his own occult ends. you have witnessed unbelievable horrors. you had to kill your own family. finally, you get a chance to stand across from the man who caused all this and ask: why? what was it all for?
and he goes, uh, because i wanted to, dipshit? that's literally the only reason anyone does anything? fuck, you're stupid. if you don't believe me ask literally anyone else. or even like an alien. they'll tell you they do whatever they want for the specific reasons they made up. and like that's literally fine we're all just doing what we want for the cool made-up reasons we each picked.
then a teenager roasts him and he vanishes from history forever. you were probably the last of your countrymen to ever see or speak to him, the man who burned down everything you knew and loved for nothing at all. and like the second to last thing he ever said to you, right between imparting his existentialist philosophy and threatening to kill you, was that aliens are real. he didn't even pause, just said "go ask an alien" and went on with his speech like aliens existing was a baseline assumption everyone could agree on.
#zenos#endwalker spoilers#jullus pyr norbanus#you might ask: can't you just read that sentence to mean he's saying “ask any other person or even the gods”?#and the answer is yes you could. imo the sentence is grammatically ambiguous and it depends on how you parse it#is it “any creature [of this star] and those above” or “any creature [of this star and those above]”#but even still that just means the atheist emperor of your explicitly-and-purposefully-atheist empire said “the gods agree with me btw”#which is also weird on an equally fundamental level if you really try to take ffxiv's ideas about religion as seriously as you can#the garleans straight up don't acknowledge anything as divine. they don't even really acknowledge primals as foreign deities#the whole rhetorical point of calling them eikons (icons) is that it implies they're something that spoken raised up themselves#they're about as unspiritual as it is possible to be in this game#the encyclopedia eorzea even indicates that eorzean theologians believe religion and magic are fundamentally intertwined#and thus garlemald doesn't have religion as basically a result of natural law (given their inability to wield aether)#even as pure rhetoric it would be jarring to hear your highly-refined and well-educated crown prince start speaking in theistic terms#but it's funnier and easier to say the alien thing

I know it was a little weird, but does anyone else have big feelings about how the end of The Winchesters features Bobby, Dean, and Jack standing together?
That’s Dean’s father. That’s his son. Three generations of family—not by blood, but by choice. And that means everything!!!!1111
#it's also the anti-thesis of the weird family shrine in the finale#DEAN'S family is bobby#it's jack#that's THREE GENERATIONS RIGHT THERE STANDING TOGETHER#spnwin stuff#in a series called the winchesters#we get the full-chested image of the singer-winchester-kline family and it's so pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!#it's so pointed!!!!!!!!#dean says he was looking for his family and his family is right there behind him#BUT THAT'S HIS FAMILY!!!!!!!#(he's actuallly looking for AND parsing what love means btw)#he always believed in the johnmary love... even in the midst of the cupid telling him otherwise#and so giving john and mary the opportunity to see each other as they were was something that soothed the ache for him#but he's missing cas specifically#just fyi

The main Justice League conference hall, but it's just Barry with his head in his hands, Batman (already pinching the bridge of his nose under the cowl), and a strained but hopeful Superman staring at a small car's worth of unfiled tax documents and receipts all across the table.
#aka#bruce and clark help barry with his taxes#that he maybe didn't file for like 5+ years#but he kept all the receipts!#how hard could it be!#clark bullies bruce into helping#clark fills out his own W2s so he thinks this will be easy#bruce has a small army of accountants at his beck and call and still can't parse some of these#late night thoughts#barry allen#the flash#batman#superman#clark kent#bruce wayne#justice league#jl

QUESTION. anyone who speaks/can read japanese noted anything about the weird phonecalls kris receives at the manor and at the end of chapter 4? it's a bit broken up from our perspective, but I can't tell if it's because the audio is too low or the person themself is struggling to get the words out. AND the speaker specifically says "I'm coming over" so i assume we'd have a first person pronoun
#my theory is that it's carol and the audio is garbled because she's calling from inside a dark world#how did kris and carol manage to communicate across different realities? no idea but it's possible#maybe it's about something changing YOU which makes you able to parse the garbage noise#rather than something about your phone etc#deltarune#dr spoilers

"contentment in singleness" doesn't require you to stop desiring marriage & family. it doesn't require you to stop pursuing marriage & family.
Christians are called to be content in any situation--that doesn't mean we abandon all our good desires and concrete goals.
contentment is to trust/rest in God's promises to love you, provide for you, and make you holy.
you can do all of those things, and earnestly want and seek a husband.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22
"Favor from the Lord" meaning, of course, blessing as the result of a life molded by wisdom.
Now, how can one find a good wife without seeking? Seek without wanting? And how can wisdom and contentment be mutually exclusive?
#this post brought to you by the drive home from church yesterday#when I realized that I'm very comfortable (and have been for awhile) where I am#unmarried and unattached but planning to be otherwise#and if I'm always planning for something that never happens? well that's just fine too#I'll have spent my youth becoming the woman I always wanted to be--not for a husband and children but for my parents & the church#and I think it took realizing that I didn't have to give up a good desire before I could *actually* be content#we are called to desire Christ's return always. that doesn't equal discontentment with our lives right now.#Christianity#x#for me it's now as simple as the Created Order fact that MOST people need to marry and procreate to keep civilization from collapsing#and on another level (mapped OVER that fact) it's as simple as God's ordinary means of kingdom-building being families#but goodness knows Christian young people have been inundated with so much overthought on this subject (myself included)#that it's necessary to parse it all out sometimes

A little clarification on how Neuvillette addresses Furina in her story quest—in English it's rendered as "Miss Furina," and shortly after "Lady Furina," implying he uses a different honorific each time.
However, in both these lines Neuvillette actually uses 女士/nǚshì, the same way he has always addressed Furina in the past, barring the instances where he only uses her name, which he only does in private and generally not to her face.
When Furina asks the NPCs in the quest to stop calling her "Lady Furina," they switch from 大人/dàrén to calling her 女士/nǚshì/Miss Furina. Previously Neuvillette was the only character who called her that. When he did, it was always rendered in English as "Lady Furina," the same as the other more reverent honorific.
So no actual change between them in this regard, just the translation team finding themselves in a bit of a bind over how to translate it going forward where the two are concerned!
#furina#neuvillette#genshin impact#neuvifuri#focallette#this isn't really meant as a ship post unlike my usual fare but since it's of interest i shall tag anyways. anyone is welcome to enjoy.#you really gotta check the chinese to parse exactly how furina is addressed cos idt any of the other languages catch all the nuances of it#ex. japanese has both neuvillette and the knave calling furina 'dono' when the knave uses a different term from nv in chinese (xiaojie)#i dont claim to speak the language nor fully understand the implications of each honorific but even just knowing where there's a difference#is very enlightening. one of these days i'll finish up the draft i have compiling how each character addresses furina#i haven't checked the act v dialogue to see how neuvillette addresses furina there btw. all in good time.#genshin impact spoilers#furina story quest spoilers

having a thought/worldbuilding experiment im rolling around in my mind about What Would It Be Like if taxpayers could choose what areas of infrastructure their taxes went to. like the total amount of taxes paid would be the same but you could go down the line and adjust how much of a percentage of what you pay you allocate to roads and transport, schools and libraries, post office... etc. the first thing is that most people would just leave it as the default/suggested allocation. the second thing is i think the impact this would have on propaganda would be so interesting. the third thing is that it would be bleakly funny if that shit was what actually got rich people to pay proportionate taxes (for the structures that reinforce hegemony at the expense of public welfare)
#im rolling it around like 'what does this society look like' btw#i am in no way suggesting this is viable at all. let alone a solution to anything#im going to stop disclaimering now this is the piss on the poor website if you are determined to misinterpret me thatll happen regardless#this has surely been explored by political theorists somewhere idk what they would have called it though#also this is not something i am motivated to parse dense academic language for. like at all

Honestly half the time the "watch something more complicated than cartoons" crowd don't even understand cartoons. When kids' shows are a bit much for you, you don't really get to be sniffy about what people prefer to watch while they eat takeout
Steven Universe did not show an empire being defeated with the power of friendship & empathy and its fascist leaders being accepted as family. It ended with an unstable biological(?) power structure being battled violently & its core constructs conclusively disproven, all its leaders removed from power and replaced, and them spending the rest of their days in basically servitude fixing what they did while being shunned by Steven. And SU Future wasn't about depression being offensively cured with hugs, it was about a teenager under massive responsibility and trauma feeling like he was losing his support network and becoming magically and mentally unstable, and ended with acceptance and him finally stepping away from his roles & heritage to find himself.
Half of the people still mad at Steven Universe can't even place its core themes and blatant messages. You didn't watch the show, you were too busy reblogging dipshit fascism accusations against its Jewish creator and drawing the lesbians in watercolours
#hidinginprivate on youtube is doing an amazing series called the point of steven universe. watch it.#then you can get back to being better than others because you also half-watched and didn't parse citizen kane#hold up before we get into a discussion about dostoyevsky i have to know you're safe to interact. do you stan rose quartz#(shrek meme) they don't even get steven universe

one of the reasons i’ll ride for self-insert/oc content in fandom for the rest of my life is because they remind me of the fun of stories where our main character is the super special most important one ever. you move to a new town and immediately the hot mysterious loner falls for you. you transfer schools because you tried to burn down your old one and oh yeah, you’re the most kickass girlie in the world who has to fight vampires to stop the forces of evil taking over the world. you get into a fancy-smancy high-school and via breaking a vase are almost immediately the most precious member of a group of some of the school’s most popular, smooth-talking members. self-insert/oc is like—a way to recreate that. and it’s so important because it’s fun. and because sometimes you just have to write a story where you’re the most loved, most important person in it, who also gets to do kickass things.
#call me by y/n: in defense of the self-insert#you and me could write a bad romance: why we need to write them#is the self-insert/oc genre above criticism? nah of course not—nothing is#but the idea is that you get the skills you need to parse through things with a critical eye—and enjoy the stuff you like anyway

Based on what we know about the start of her and Joe and also how things were in the end, I don’t think it’s that hard to see how they got together when she pursued him. Hint: listen to So It Goes… and Dress.
And for people thinking he was always nice and kind to her even when fighting: listen to Renegade. It is littered with stuff that he could be cruel. There’s other songs as well, but lines like “you fire off missiles cause you hate yourself/but can’t you see you’re demolishing me” is very vivid.
that’s a great point re: renegade. I was actually just listening to it earlier today, and it’s still one of her best-written and most cutting songs. i immediately clocked what the timing lyric meant at the time, even though it was a super controversial take on here
#lowkey that was one of my litmus tests that helped me parse out who could like. think critically on this website#bc the people who are smart and whom I still#follow#immediately called it instead of going for the copium ass route of ‘it’s from his perspective’ dpmo

Movies/books which seared me:
hana-bi
melancholia
the aunt (patrick white)
never let me go (ishiguro)
#they all have a thing about boredom as an existential state even more than grief#dkw to call it but something about mundanity being profound and the profound being mundane#and in a way they are all horror stories too but it's the horror of individual existence within a context#and strange beauty#five minute question-answer these were the ones that floated up first so im gonna assume they're the right answers#i think for me there's a point where media has to become separate from its sense of its own cleverness#PB is interesting because there's a huge layer of revelling in its cleverness but then there's a huge layer of stuff they must have#-realised almost *no one* would parse; they never ever talk about it in interviews either#hana-bi is also a cop/gangster-*type* movie which uses genre motifs to look at grief and subverts#the grief is unbelievable and understated despite very contrived devices it doesn't *feel* like it's rolling in its own cleverness

Song of all time, to me
The siren song rings like a gong It turns your mind to gravy She'll have you drown in that locker down With Jones comma Davey Such pretty tones, you've never known Like angels plucking harp strings The only defence, just common sense Fatigue has made you hear things
The Kraken was attacking us Its tentacles surrounding The timbers broke, cap'n had a stoke Our troubles were compounding And just as we prayed to the sea Deliver us salvation We realised our heavy eyes Shared a group hallucination
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the physical strain there's no surprise Your faculties get compromised
(FLEET, spoken: I'll wait outside.) (CLARA, spoken: Don't you dare.)
The helmsman who was wedded to A selkie from the fathoms His judgement scarred, he'd worked as hard As any man since Adam And when we spied a sea serpent's eyes We knew our doom awaited Until it clicked, we'd been too strict And likely dehydrated!
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the burn of the rope and the frozen winds It's natural to be seeing things
Sleep hygiene Good diet These things keep monsters quiet New hammocks Less motion No nightmares on the ocean
Sleep hygiene (hey!) Good diet (hey!) These things keep monsters quiet (hey!) New hammocks (hey!) Less motion (hey!) No nightmares on the ocean (hey!)
(And the lady!)
It's all made up! It's in your heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! We toil for days, our attention frays I never knew my father…
(SAILOR, spoken: That's a… different sort of problem, Michael, I'm sorry, that's a different song.) (MICHAEL, spoken: Sorry…) (SAILOR, spoken: Nothing to apologise for Michael, you're among friends, and you're our only basso profundo)
Oh!
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the moonless sky and the narwhal's cry It's natural to forget
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the raging storm and the grog lukewarm It's simple to neglect
With the blinding sun and the dearth of fun You're under the gun to fish every tonne The work's never done, the truth can be spun It's a damned hard job trawling those sea
(Oh, er, (sigh))
Be-eds!
#*cannot for the life of me parse this word and theres no transcripts easily accessible on the victoriocity site w/o emailing#closest ive got is grobblue which just is not a word or even close to one. is it a wall? a call? a fall? such questions we may never know#sounds#victoriocity
