this will forever be the funniest moment in final fantasy xiv to me. you are a bright young officer of the globe-spanning evil empire. over the last few months you've watched the entire empire crumble from the edges inward after the former crown prince killed his father and seized the throne so he could redirect the state toward his own occult ends. you have witnessed unbelievable horrors. you had to kill your own family. finally, you get a chance to stand across from the man who caused all this and ask: why? what was it all for?
and he goes, uh, because i wanted to, dipshit? that's literally the only reason anyone does anything? fuck, you're stupid. if you don't believe me ask literally anyone else. or even like an alien. they'll tell you they do whatever they want for the specific reasons they made up. and like that's literally fine we're all just doing what we want for the cool made-up reasons we each picked.
then a teenager roasts him and he vanishes from history forever. you were probably the last of your countrymen to ever see or speak to him, the man who burned down everything you knew and loved for nothing at all. and like the second to last thing he ever said to you, right between imparting his existentialist philosophy and threatening to kill you, was that aliens are real. he didn't even pause, just said "go ask an alien" and went on with his speech like aliens existing was a baseline assumption everyone could agree on.

I know it was a little weird, but does anyone else have big feelings about how the end of The Winchesters features Bobby, Dean, and Jack standing together?
That’s Dean’s father. That’s his son. Three generations of family—not by blood, but by choice. And that means everything!!!!1111

The main Justice League conference hall, but it's just Barry with his head in his hands, Batman (already pinching the bridge of his nose under the cowl), and a strained but hopeful Superman staring at a small car's worth of unfiled tax documents and receipts all across the table.

QUESTION. anyone who speaks/can read japanese noted anything about the weird phonecalls kris receives at the manor and at the end of chapter 4? it's a bit broken up from our perspective, but I can't tell if it's because the audio is too low or the person themself is struggling to get the words out. AND the speaker specifically says "I'm coming over" so i assume we'd have a first person pronoun

"contentment in singleness" doesn't require you to stop desiring marriage & family. it doesn't require you to stop pursuing marriage & family.
Christians are called to be content in any situation--that doesn't mean we abandon all our good desires and concrete goals.
contentment is to trust/rest in God's promises to love you, provide for you, and make you holy.
you can do all of those things, and earnestly want and seek a husband.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22
"Favor from the Lord" meaning, of course, blessing as the result of a life molded by wisdom.
Now, how can one find a good wife without seeking? Seek without wanting? And how can wisdom and contentment be mutually exclusive?

A little clarification on how Neuvillette addresses Furina in her story quest—in English it's rendered as "Miss Furina," and shortly after "Lady Furina," implying he uses a different honorific each time.
However, in both these lines Neuvillette actually uses 女士/nǚshì, the same way he has always addressed Furina in the past, barring the instances where he only uses her name, which he only does in private and generally not to her face.
When Furina asks the NPCs in the quest to stop calling her "Lady Furina," they switch from 大人/dàrén to calling her 女士/nǚshì/Miss Furina. Previously Neuvillette was the only character who called her that. When he did, it was always rendered in English as "Lady Furina," the same as the other more reverent honorific.
So no actual change between them in this regard, just the translation team finding themselves in a bit of a bind over how to translate it going forward where the two are concerned!

having a thought/worldbuilding experiment im rolling around in my mind about What Would It Be Like if taxpayers could choose what areas of infrastructure their taxes went to. like the total amount of taxes paid would be the same but you could go down the line and adjust how much of a percentage of what you pay you allocate to roads and transport, schools and libraries, post office... etc. the first thing is that most people would just leave it as the default/suggested allocation. the second thing is i think the impact this would have on propaganda would be so interesting. the third thing is that it would be bleakly funny if that shit was what actually got rich people to pay proportionate taxes (for the structures that reinforce hegemony at the expense of public welfare)

Honestly half the time the "watch something more complicated than cartoons" crowd don't even understand cartoons. When kids' shows are a bit much for you, you don't really get to be sniffy about what people prefer to watch while they eat takeout
Steven Universe did not show an empire being defeated with the power of friendship & empathy and its fascist leaders being accepted as family. It ended with an unstable biological(?) power structure being battled violently & its core constructs conclusively disproven, all its leaders removed from power and replaced, and them spending the rest of their days in basically servitude fixing what they did while being shunned by Steven. And SU Future wasn't about depression being offensively cured with hugs, it was about a teenager under massive responsibility and trauma feeling like he was losing his support network and becoming magically and mentally unstable, and ended with acceptance and him finally stepping away from his roles & heritage to find himself.
Half of the people still mad at Steven Universe can't even place its core themes and blatant messages. You didn't watch the show, you were too busy reblogging dipshit fascism accusations against its Jewish creator and drawing the lesbians in watercolours

one of the reasons i’ll ride for self-insert/oc content in fandom for the rest of my life is because they remind me of the fun of stories where our main character is the super special most important one ever. you move to a new town and immediately the hot mysterious loner falls for you. you transfer schools because you tried to burn down your old one and oh yeah, you’re the most kickass girlie in the world who has to fight vampires to stop the forces of evil taking over the world. you get into a fancy-smancy high-school and via breaking a vase are almost immediately the most precious member of a group of some of the school’s most popular, smooth-talking members. self-insert/oc is like—a way to recreate that. and it’s so important because it’s fun. and because sometimes you just have to write a story where you’re the most loved, most important person in it, who also gets to do kickass things.

Based on what we know about the start of her and Joe and also how things were in the end, I don’t think it’s that hard to see how they got together when she pursued him. Hint: listen to So It Goes… and Dress.
And for people thinking he was always nice and kind to her even when fighting: listen to Renegade. It is littered with stuff that he could be cruel. There’s other songs as well, but lines like “you fire off missiles cause you hate yourself/but can’t you see you’re demolishing me” is very vivid.
that’s a great point re: renegade. I was actually just listening to it earlier today, and it’s still one of her best-written and most cutting songs. i immediately clocked what the timing lyric meant at the time, even though it was a super controversial take on here

Song of all time, to me
The siren song rings like a gong It turns your mind to gravy She'll have you drown in that locker down With Jones comma Davey Such pretty tones, you've never known Like angels plucking harp strings The only defence, just common sense Fatigue has made you hear things
The Kraken was attacking us Its tentacles surrounding The timbers broke, cap'n had a stoke Our troubles were compounding And just as we prayed to the sea Deliver us salvation We realised our heavy eyes Shared a group hallucination
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the physical strain there's no surprise Your faculties get compromised
(FLEET, spoken: I'll wait outside.) (CLARA, spoken: Don't you dare.)
The helmsman who was wedded to A selkie from the fathoms His judgement scarred, he'd worked as hard As any man since Adam And when we spied a sea serpent's eyes We knew our doom awaited Until it clicked, we'd been too strict And likely dehydrated!
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the burn of the rope and the frozen winds It's natural to be seeing things
Sleep hygiene Good diet These things keep monsters quiet New hammocks Less motion No nightmares on the ocean
Sleep hygiene (hey!) Good diet (hey!) These things keep monsters quiet (hey!) New hammocks (hey!) Less motion (hey!) No nightmares on the ocean (hey!)
(And the lady!)
It's all made up! It's in your heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! We toil for days, our attention frays I never knew my father…
(SAILOR, spoken: That's a… different sort of problem, Michael, I'm sorry, that's a different song.) (MICHAEL, spoken: Sorry…) (SAILOR, spoken: Nothing to apologise for Michael, you're among friends, and you're our only basso profundo)
Oh!
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the moonless sky and the narwhal's cry It's natural to forget
It's all made up! It's in our heads! It's hard work trawling those sea beds! With the raging storm and the grog lukewarm It's simple to neglect
With the blinding sun and the dearth of fun You're under the gun to fish every tonne The work's never done, the truth can be spun It's a damned hard job trawling those sea
(Oh, er, (sigh))
Be-eds!
