HOTD has made many interesting choices in their adaptation of the story of the Dance. One of their favorite excuses for many of their questionable choices is "feminism". Why did they remove Alicent's ambitions and autonomy? Feminism. Why is Rhaenyra less proactive and hesitant? Feminism. Why are Daemon and Otto the primary active agents in the lead up to the Dance? Well women can't be in the wrong or violent, so feminism.
These choices are the farthest thing from feminist; they're sexist, end of story. Every decision surrounding the women of the Dance reeks of benevolent sexism. One of the most obviously sexist decisions made is the purposeful removal of female cooperation and friendship.
Rhaenyra in F&B has many female allies and friends. Her ladies in waiting loved her so much, one of them, Lady Elinda Massey gouged out her eyes at the sight of Rhaenyra's death. Lady Jeyne Arryn, Lady Alysanne Blackwood, and Lady Sabitha Frey/Vypren are just a few examples of ladies who fought for Rhaenyra (Alysanne and Sabitha literally fought in battles). Lady Fell chose death over betraying her oath to Rhaenyra.
Now, we haven't had any opportunity to meet most of these women I listed in the show. Lady Fell was portrayed as she was written in the book, a very minor character who simply foreshadowed how most of the realm would choose Rhaenyra over Aegon. Elinda Massey, however was reduced to an unnamed servant, not even a lady in waiting. Her treatment is an echo of one of my biggest issues with HOTD, the treatment of Laena and Rhaenys.
Laena was Rhaenyra's dearest friend in the book, in fact it's implied that they had a romantic relationship. Whether you believe that telling or not, it's undeniable that she and Laena were extremely close. They chose to betroth their children while they were infants, Rhaenyra flew to Laena's bedside during her final labor, and she stood vigil with Daemon over Laena's body.
All of that closeness and intimacy was removed in the show to make room for Alicent. So let's break that down: they removed a long and healthy relationship between two women and replaced it with a short-lived (in terms of screen time) friendship that quickly fell apart and turned into an intense rivalry. Reinforcing an old stereotype of female friendship: that it is entrenched in rivalry and toxicity and can quickly be turned to enmity. Alicent was so quickly and easily turned against Rhaenyra and it's even implied that she was jealous of Rhaenyra long before they became enemies.
Rhaenys in the book was an ardent supporter of Rhaenyra. She happily claimed Jace, Luke, and Joff as her grandsons, advised Rhaenyra to go to war, and gladly flew against Aegon and Aemond.
Meanwhile, in the show, Rhaenys was turned into one of Rhaenyra's rivals. She constantly challenged Rhaenyra's ideas, dismissed her as a naive child, disliked her children, and even considered backing the Greens. On top of that, they turned her into yet another "peaceful" woman. She advises against the war, and seems to continue to do so in season two. Rhaenys is virtually unrecognizable in the show. They chose to take a woman who tried to prevent a younger woman being wronged by the patriarchy the same way she was and turned her into a bitter woman who resents Rhaenyra (for most of the show).
HOTD claimed to have wanted to tell a story about how the patriarchy pits women against each other. That's all very well and good, but that's not what they actually did. They took a story where a woman is wrongfully usurped because of her gender and is supported by many other women and turned it into another tired female rivalry story.
Rhaenyra has no female friends aside from Alicent. Laena was turned from her dearest friend/lover into simply a rival for Daemon's affection. Rhaenys was turned from a supportive mentor and defender to someone who took out her resentment for the system on a fourteen year old who only starts to support her when she's proven "peaceful".
HOTD chose to perpetuate a harmful stereotype about women: that we constantly view each other as threats/rivals and can't have truly healthy relationships with other women. Rhaenyra had women who supported and cared for her in the book, in the show all she has is Alicent. A woman who abused and undermined her for ten years, raised her children to hate her, and usurped her. Every change HOTD made in the name of "feminism" solidified just how sexist it really is.

Green stans keep going on and on about how Aegon was the rightful King by the laws of the land, when Targaryen have never followed the succession laws of the Andals.
By Andal law:
—Maegor should be King, not Aenys
—Aerea should be Queen, not Jaehaerys
—Rhaenys should be Queen, not Viserys
But you don't defend those cases, you don't bring up Maegor's legitimacy, nor Aerea's and you only bring up Rhaenys's to bash Rhaenyra. You have never cared about the rules of the land, but suddenly you do, why? Because Rhaenyra is a woman "taking" the throne from a man.
And then they go on and on about how they are not misogynistic.

“There's a story behind everything. How a picture got on a wall. How a scar got on your face. Sometimes the stories are simple, and sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is always your mother's story, because hers is where yours begin.” — Mitch Albom

I swear…if they even dare to have Daemon physically abuse Rhaenyra on or off screen (something that NEVER happened in canon), I will officially be 100% done with this shitshow.
The choking scene was bad enough (as confirmed by the actors themselves). There had better be a good explanation for that bandaged hand and the bruise on her cheek in that promo.
Daemon Targaryen was many things. But he was NEVER physically abusive towards any of his wives (not even Rhea Royce, the wife he despised).
The only ones to suffer Daemon’s wrath are his family’s enemies.
For what possible reason would Daemon inflict harm on the love of his life?
It’s pathetic how Condal tries the most despicable things to get the GA to root for his greenies, and it still doesn’t work. What is this guy’s problem?
And I can’t believe GRRM lets him butcher his absolute fave like this. Shame on him.

Big anti hotdrhaenyra. HBO will never make me betray canon Rhaenyra.
Now the opinion is actively spreading that people showed their true colors after the release of the sixth episode of the second season of hotd. And that supposedly those who are unhappy with the changes made to the characters in the show, especially Rhaenyra, are not true fans of her and such actions insult the canon.
But I will reveal the truth. Just the opposite is true. The Rhaenyra from the show is not the real Rhaenyra. This is a faceless, stupid, selfish character.
The real Rhaenyra is a completely different person. Proud, hot-tempered, vindictive. She's not perfect. But she is more like a real person with real flaws.
Rhaenyra never had any problems with her gender. She was a woman, she admitted it. The Queen did not envy Daemon and did not dream of being born a man. Rhaenyra admired Visenya, but she was not her and did not try to become her.
I love that she didn’t care at all about the court’s opinion of her personal life, because she didn’t even try to pretend that she and Laenor were a married couple when she allowed her husband to live his life on Driftmark, surrounded by his favourites.
Rhaenyra was not a crazy nymphomaniac who fucked everything that moved. There is a possibility that their marriage to Laenor was never consummated, and sexual relations with Criston are refuted by all sources. In her life were: the father of her three children, Harwin, there is a possibility that there was Laena (I don’t really think it true, but this theory is very popular so let’s count it) and Daemon.
She really could love. Rhaenyra sent her husband to kill the man who dared to insult her sons. Rhaenyra's grief for Luke was so great that she fainted at the news of his death and did not take part in the war council. One of the factors that exacerbated the queen's paranoia was the deaths of Jace and Viserys, to which was added the alleged betrayal of her husband.
Rhaenyra insisted that Laena be cared for after her difficult birth by her personal maester, renowned for his healing skills, and she wanted Gerardys to care for Viserys' health. Out of love for her father, she did not cause any harm to Alicent, although she had every right to do otherwise.
Eustace confirms that Daemon was his niece's first love and appears to be the love of her life, as baby Aegon was conceived immediately after Laena's death and while Harwin was still alive. Even Mushroom mentions Daemon as Rhaenyra's "beloved husband", and Rhaenyra herself calls her husband "my prince" and is furious at rumors that her husband might be leaving her for a younger woman. And even if Daemon did cheat on his wife with Mysaria, Rhaenyra herself remained a faithful wife to her husband and had no other lovers during their marriage or after Daemon's death (I have a feeling the showRhaenyra will fuck showAlicent right after showJoffrey's death).
Rhaenyra loved her family. She loved her so much that it almost destroyed her. And I think that one of the reasons why Rhaenyra did not follow her sister's example after escaping from the capital was her love for her last living child, Aegon.
ShowRhaenyra doesn't care about anyone but herself. She has already forgotten about her dead children and is now running around the island with a dissatisfied face, dreaming of becoming a man and apparently looking for someone who fuck her. She was ready to give the Hightowers, the people who discussed her murder in episode nine, her youngest sons, without even consulting the father of her children. She went to the capital to negotiate peace with murderers, traitors and usurpers, without thinking about the negative consequences for her family.
ShowRhaenyra demands advice from the lords, but rejects all advice offered. She's hysterical and doesn't offer anything herself.
ShowRhaenyra left her father to rot alone for six years and remembered his existence, only then did she need her trash to be cleaned up after her.
ShowRhaenyra didn't get sex from showDaemon in episode four, so she went and fucked the first man she could find. This was not the act of the girl boss or a progressive woman (as black fans of the show believe) or a rapist (as green fans of the show believe), it was the act of an idiot who, being the heir to the throne in a patriarchal and misogynistic world, decided to put her reputation at risk for the sake of the man, and she didn't even love him so much. She has no right to say that showDaemon destroyed her reputation. Yes, I agree, the situation with the brothel was his fault, but it was not showDaemon who put showCriston in his niece’s bed and it was not he who advised her to give birth to obvious bastards for ten years.
At the beginning of the sixth episode of the first season, she scolded showLaenor for having the audacity to give a name to her son, and then in the next scene she shouted at showLaenor that her bastards were his sons and he should be their father and obliged to help her get out from the hole she dug for herself.
ShowMysaria talked about how she was sexually assaulted and what is your blessed girl boss doing? She immediately tries to "comfort" the other woman by starting a sexual relationship and uses showMysaria just like all the other men in her life. If Matt had been on Emma place, the poor man would have been stoned and accused of harassment.
And of course, how can one not remember that the real Rhaenyra was a style icon in Westeros, preferring purple and maroon colors, Myrish lace, diamonds and pearls? The showrhaenyra wore garbage bags in the first season and cheap robes in the second.
Every time any fans support changes to the show and insist that the show is more canon than the book, they insult the true Rhaenyra.
This is the true Rhaenyra Targaryen. She and only she.
Tumblr media
Not Milly, not Emma. Their character is a terrible daughter, wife, mother, sister, friend and queen. Sara and Ryan wrote their own fanfic and made show about it. And in a freak accident, they gave the characters in the show the same names that GRRM gave the characters in his books.

The subduing of the Riverlands by the Blacks in F&B feels epic to read every time.
Hundreds and then thousands buckled on their swordbelts and
donned their mail, or grabbed a pitchfork or a hoe and a crude wooden
shield, and began to make their way to Harrenhal to fight for Viserys’s
little girl.
Rhaenyra may not be there in person but in spirit her presence is felt throughout. Such a charmer she was that knights and peasants alike had kept her in their memories even though years had passed since her progress. Meanwhile Daemon's military prowess brought the nobles to line.
Even the nobles who once vied for her favour such as Samwell Blackwood and Forrest Frey had not forgotten her. Daemon's capture of Stone Hedge while the Brackens were busy in the Battle of the Burning Mill was a rather clever strategy.
Then there were other loyalists such as the Mallisters, the good old Darrys and, my personal favourite, the Pipers of Pinkmaiden.
“I swore her my sword. I’m older now, but not so old that I’ve forgotten
the words I said, and it happens I still have the sword.”
Petyr Piper, Lord of Pinkmaiden, you were too good for that fictional world.
It is Daemon - Prince Consort and Protector of the Realm - who captures Harrenhal and the wealth within the castle swiftly and without bloodshed and unites all her supporters within that region under one banner but he is there as an extension of Rhaenyra's will. As someone who interprets the two of them both as a romantic and political power couple, they came off as a formidable team even while they were apart from each other.
And, good for Elmo Tully for turning a deaf ear to his old misogynist grandfather's rants.

Show!Rhaenyra, when Visenya died: *does nothing, says nothing*
Book!Rhaenyra, when Visenya died: “She was my only daughter, and they (the greens) killed her. They stole my crown and murdered my daughter, and they shall answer for it.”
Show!Rhaenyra, when the greens offered terms: *cries over a single page*
Book!Rhaenyra, when the greens offered terms: “With your own tongue you admit I am your lawful queen. Why then do you serve my half-brother, the pretender? Tell my half-brother that I will have my throne, or I will have his head.”
Show!Rhaenyra, when Luke died: *searches for Luke’s remains, scolds Daemon for the Blood and Cheese plot, then goes on a suicide mission posing as a septa to enter King’s Landing just to talk to the woman who repeatedly betrays her and makes her life hell*
Book!Rhaenyra, when Luke died: *collapsed when told of the news, probably has no qualms when her husband sent Blood and Cheese, the Dance of the Dragons entered a new stage*
Tumblr media
I dunno... Am I the only one who thinks that show!Rhaenyra is so weak AF compared to book!Rhaenyra? Ok.
If book!Rhaenyra was to see her show version, she would be utterly disappointed in her. Book!Rhaenyra wouldn’t do what show!Rhaenyra had done.

Rhaenyra learning of Luke's Death
Tumblr media
The grief of a mother who holds the place where her lost son once was as tears stream down her face and she weeps. The gentle embrace of a woman who was once her mother-by-law, who knows and shares her pain, and that will soon die for her cause with more bravery than any of their enemies have. The pain of her sons as they watch, children who know no peace will ever be possible and that their childhoods, like their brother, are dead.
This remains and will remain the best thing media has produced about the Dance and Rhaenyra's pain in this simple illustration, the rawness of it stands as proof that millions mean nothing when there's no passion nor respect for the source material or the characters. When you want to tell your story and not the story in the books.
A more accurate Rhaenyra than we will ever have and how sad this is.

Never thought it necessary, but it has come to this.
Time to add a tag on Ao3 mentioning the non-association of my story to the piece of trash on screen.
Those of you who are true Asoiaf fans, should do the same to yours.
Because let’s make something clear. GRRM is no longer involved with that shit show. He hates it, and has clearly stated that we should separate his work from it. And he won’t be part of season 3. Therefore, if the trash “flourishes” have not been confirmed by GRRM, they are not canon (including Rhaenyra’s sexuality).
