If Parkour Civilization can teach writers anything it’s that no matter how nonsensical or cringe the concept is, all people really want is for you to put care and thought into your world building
#00#writing#parkour civilization#the children yearn for complex world building with strict rules#the children also yearn for commentary on the intrinsically unfair social structures created by capitalism#you gotta COMMIT to the BIT#((the children also yearn for color-coded categories))#evbo content#cringe is not the right word…..#that’s sounds too mean and obviously it’s supposed to be silly and over-serious#silly would have been a better word

Me when fantasy worlds forgo realism and accuracy in favor of making things as cool and fun as possible

#part of why I like the Mario Movie so much tbh#The Jungle Kingdom and The Mushroom Kingdom don't make much sense structurally but who cares??? go cart go vroom#jojo's bizarre adventure also falls into this category to an extent

I keep thinking that this Gojo is just like Sukuna. I truly don't see much of a difference between them beyond the human/curse point of view
#If not Sukuna then some other more palatable special degree curses like the one he just killed that talked about the new humanity#It truly looks like that I don't know#Trying to be unbiased about the pretty concepts I take personally#and trying to ignore the silly fact that Sukuna's domain is literally called temple of evil or something (makes one want to ask#so many things like why the hell does he call it such? isn't evil good for you? Isn't a species kind of thing?#Why are you adhering to human notions and conceptualisations if you seem so beyond them and think nothing of them?)#Gojo is quite terrifying from a curse point of view. He is cruel and merciless. He can't be reasoned with and he is playful. He has his fun#His powers are not much different in structure from those of a curse and he said that the power capacity of a sorcerer comes from birth#So it's ontological. It's not just skill. It's an essential differentiation. Just like curses#It's just... I don't know. It's almost as if he were a curse himself. He talks about emotions being the source of curses?#Maybe that's the difference? Was Sukuna born that way too?#I don't know. I keep thinking that he is quite idk monstrous in a very Sukuna way. He isn't terrible like Sukuna is like with the kids#But he is human after all. He does adhere to human categories. Sukuna is something else#And yet Gojo uses the kids. He draws lines and he is caring and gentle and sweet in his way#but he very much uses the kids and is a bit flippant about it. And he is human#I don't know. It seems completely intentional this similarity between Gojo and the curses and Gojo and Sukuna in particular#Sukuna seems interested in Megumi while Gojo seems interested in Itadori and idk I just keep thinking#but I'm not even know about what or how#I find this man very hard to trust haha the parallels are intriguing#I think this piece of worldbuilding has potential as well as their characterisations#I hope the author will do something with all this#I talk too much#Jujutsu Kaisen#Gojo Satoru#Sukuna

a quick helpful reference guide:
Children's books - Target demographic is generally up to like age 10 - basically elementary school and below, for us Americans.
Middle-grade books - Target demographic is approximately middle schoolers (ages 11-15).
YA (Young Adult) - Target demographic is about 15-20ish year olds, so high schoolers and early college.
There is such thing as "upper middle-grade books" (targeted more towards the upper range of middle grade, so middle schoolers going into high school) and other such more specific intended target demographic age ranges within those groupings.
What these ranges mean is that the books differ in how they present subject matter to be appropriate to the intended audience demographic. Obviously, books geared towards younger kids are going to be shorter, use simpler language, and present concepts in ways that are easier to understand for younger children. As the target age demographic increases, the length, word choice, and presentation of topics will become more complex. The actual subject matter within the book itself is unrelated to this classification system for the most part - the books are graded on what's presumed appropriate for that age-range in terms of how children learn and their presumed literacy and reading comprehension at that age, rather than the topic itself.
Rick Riordan is a middle-grade author, and his books are usually middle-grade - including the entirety of the Riordanverse and Daughter of the Deep. The only exception is The Sun And The Star, which is loosely either upper middle-grade or YA, as Mark Oshiro is a YA author and co-authored it.
#rick riordan#< basically only gonna tag that cause this is more general books rather than pjo-specific#anyways stop calling Rick a YA author he's not#also QUALITY IS SUBJECTIVE TO THESE CATEGORIES#a book being shitty because it's middle-grade does not excuse it being shitty#it just means it's shitty and also middle-grade#in fact its probably more difficult to write well for younger age groups because you have to break down the concepts well#and your audience is less likely to have the life experience to understand certain references or experiences#and you need to take that into account#it doesn't mean they can't handle certain concepts or deserve shitty writing#some writing is just obectively bad from a structural standpoint

The things I learn while researching for fanfic.
#I have an AU that relies heavily on having an in depth understanding of Spartan political and social structure#the experience of this varies from ‘wow; that’s pretty cool’ to ‘what the heck did I just read *horrified tone*’#the topic of Diamastigosis in the cult of Artemis Orthia falls in that latter category#it’s actually comparatively not that bad; just oddly specific#wren rambles

Going to my cognition science lectures, and every time I'm more and more convinced that the professor might be in my tumblr bubble. The coincidences are getting a bit scary at this point.
#phd adventures#like standard philosophy stuff is expected. yeah. that checks out.#he did not outright slander plato and kant but the vibes are there#but then he really loves to mention maths. and topology. and category theory. (as examples)#like he is not a mathematician but he seems to like them so we're having the same stance here#he is also using trump and musk as sort of the 'bad' examples. (like when mental structures are not really aligned with reality lmao)#thats like an average day on tumblr#he also supports the notion that cognition and physiology are two different blocks which i feel like is a general consensus among tumblrinas#(but not me. i want to mash them together. but thats a different story)#but what got my suspicions really high#is that he joked about how much water chatgpt uses to generate images#sir. thats a tumblr thing.#only thing missing is him talking about despair and blorbos but thats not lecture material#either way professor if youre reading this hiiiiiiii#that was a joke. itd be weird

buddy cole documentary trailer editing update!

printed more quotes/clip descriptions and taped them to color-coded notecards for my irl paper-edit timeline!! also reprinted all the quotes i already picked out bc i wanted to change the formatting. and i just realized from looking at this photo that i accidentally put one of the quotes on the wrong color card FUCK
(it's the one attributed to mark mckinney that just says [The Buddy Cole Song], I wrote it that way bc I didn't want to type out every lyric he improvised and I'd know just from the description, but I use that same brackets style to describe actions in the clips that won't be using their original audio so it got put in that pile. remind me to fix that tomorrow lmao)
also the huge green one is a one minute piece of conversation from a time when scott was considering retiring the buddy cole character (which he's done several times over the course of production, that's what mark's improv-song was about) and me trying to convince scott himself why the character is still relevant. i'm a little insecure about putting that long of a clip in a trailer bc most other clips are like 1-3 sentences but also this is gonna be an extended trailer-slash-reel so it'll be like 5-7 minutes in total, and that conversation will at times just play as audio with buddy performance clips over it (that's what the green notecard means) but idk let me know if you don't want to hear it lol
also if someone could teach me exactly how the youtube copyright system works that would be much appreciated
#purple is just visual. red is visual + audio. yellow is just audio. green can have visual shown but can also easily become voiceover#and i'm gonna add blue notecards any time i come up with a type of clip i want to add that i don't already have printed out#(i.e. i have way more audio cards than visual cards‚ and none of the cards have stuff from the KITH tv show or archive footage yet#so i'm gonna build the structure via my own footage and then look at my placeholder blue cards and start tracking those down)#yes i know there are far more convenient ways to do this digitally‚ but this is how i want to work lmao#also in the ''person'' column i did separate scott and buddy as different categories#(it's defined by whether he's in his buddy costume‚ not necessarily the voice + whether he's onstage)#and don't worry i do have an online spreadsheet that includes not just the time code‚ name‚ and quote transcript#but also the file name and where it's located so i'll be able to track the pieces down again#yippee editing updates!!! idk if this is interesting but i feel the need to share to prove i'm doing something lmao

Can you explain more what you mean when you say “an identity based framework is inconsistent with material analysis”?
I'm incredibly critical of the idea that simply having a particular social identity renders one 'oppressed' or 'oppressed enough' to speak on particular issues; if your biggest grievance is how people speak to/about you and not your material reality, then you're doing comparatively well.
For context, I think there are four main forms of structural disadvantage that we should structure our discourse around:
being institutionalised on the basis of one's group, e.g. imprisonment, confinement in certain places like residential schools, confinement in mental health facilities;
being subject to violence on the basis of one's group, e.g. domestic violence, conversion therapy, forceful removal from family/culture;
being impoverished on the basis of one's group, e.g. living in poverty (not just being poor), being prevented from earning or owning money; and
lacking institutional representation, e.g. in politics, in administrative decision-making, in planning decisions.
I find that a lot of online 'activists' can't actually describe what they believe without relying on an identity framework; they'll say that [x] is oppressed, but they won't be able to explain how [x] fits into any of those categories (or whether there should be a fifth category) - they'll just assume that material consequence follows group identification.
#i think the problem is that the vast majority of online activists are middle-class and haven't experienced structural disadvantage#like i don't consider being called a slur a form of systemic discrimination (like being impoverished); i think it's just hurtful#you're going to have to dm me if you want more detail and some examples; my opinions are Unpopular#anon#identity politics#radblr#(i'm happy to hear whether others would add any other categories!)#sorry for the word rant hope it makes sense i wrote it late last night

I've now (lightly) edited 6 chapters of FrankensteinWIP and uhhh. Well. Good news about it: I no longer feel meh about the book, I love it again. Bad (?) news about it: I think I have written something that appeals specifically to me and no one else which, uh, that was the plan originally I guess? Like I wanted to write something entirely self-indulgent and personal, and I think I succeeded, but my question is - will anyone else want to read this? Cause I honestly cannot tell.
Almost exactly half of this book is a slow-burn queer romance in a dark academia setting and then the other half is going to be a creepy disturbing science/medical horror (plus the romance will go from slightly questionable to a co-dependent nightmare). I adore this, I feel like I am writing my own version of Secret History with overt queer text instead of subtext. However. Would anyone else read this lol
Anyway, I will edit the first half until I run out of stuff to edit and go back to drafting with renewed motivation. I still haven't decided if I want to share that first half already btw. But I do enjoy the edit so far. A lot. So at least there's that.
#writeblr#writers on tumblr#frankensteinwip#this book is so weird#and it's probably gonna be over 100k long#and i love it the way it is but i'm guessing i have no chance of getting it into any big press lol#it's not a romance because it doesn't fit the structure of a romance#even though the romantic plot line is central and super important#and it's not a horror because the fucked up stuff takes so long to show up#but it is a horror romance like. idk how else to describe it#point is - it doesn't fit into any easily marketable category#i assume it's super not for everyone#but i feel like if i would make it into anything else i would not love it the way i do#so what. self-pub i guess?

#Damned#And this is still Just Damned - not including Helix where it doesn't intersect or the larger SCII tag#Whoah#There is something a bit familiar about this kind of structure!#I mentioned back in the ask about Just Desserts not(yet) having a masterpost that I wasn't entirely sure how to make one but hm!#I've made the taglists over on Drabbles and VLH and this is Somewhat similar - and I have another post that's more like this elsewhere#So not entirely foreign to me! Not something I've done over here tho#I figured with the tag being rude and not showing like - a dozen posts??? That's absurd >:0 And I know it's not tag differences!#I clicked on the specific tag the not-showing posts were tagged with and they just Do Not Appear!#Literally have never had that happen on-blog that's only ever been a search/dash thing ugh pls stop with the tungl code pfbtl |P#So! Masterpost! Always be able to find the guys you're looking for!#But also human error lol if there's any that stick out as being missing or accidentally double-linked just shout it out#Did a lot of reorganizing for the original run as some of my doodles were made/posted out of order of the actual events#Very event-obscuring >:3c Some of those didn't even happen! They were just for funsies! Haha#I did leave out Max demanding his body back from ZEX - to the Other list - as that was All speculative and not shown anywhere#The rest are all at least in reference to things that officially happened - pretty sure#Also got a bit silly with some of the captions hehe ♪ Not all of them but a few :) Fun!#''Daay'' is spelled like that intentionally hehe >:3c#And has three sections because! a) Digital b) Speculations c) Actual happenings so far#With some not-happenings silliness mixed in there so you're never quite sure what is and isn't real! Haha#And then the last two with the least amount - or most if you count the sketchdump by volume rather than number of sets lol#What else might fall into this category! It remains to be seen :) The ideas haven't stopped yet#And of course it's too much fun to want to stop ♥

how painful when an objectively quite bad piece of media does exactly one (1) thing that's clever and interesting, but you can't in good conscience recommend anyone to watch it
#squirrel speaks#few days ago i saw someone on youtube kind of freak out about an anime shallowly using a trope that's....#i guess “objectionable” is a polite word to use for it?#and i thought “well surely that reaction is disproportionate” so i went to see for myself#as I tend to when i hear a heated opinion about something i have not seen/read/played/etc. myself yknow#and i was right. it's not significantly worse than many things i've already seen#the trope is there; it is quite bad; and overall the show itself is some Weeb Ass Shit.#i'd give it like a 5-8-9 in those categories in that order#it does however do something that i think is quite fun and interesting with its narrative structure#where it adapts a dating sim route by route and sort of turns back time to decision points once one storyline finishes#so in 12 episodes it has like 4 “endings”#and i think that's quite clever! i'd like to talk about it!#but the whole of it is also. how you say. kind of shit otherwise

Saul Newman - The Politics of Postanarchism
The Politics of Postanarchism Saul Newman In recent years radical politics has been faced with a number of new challenges, not least of which has been the reemergence of the aggressive, authoritarian state in its new paradigm of security and bio-politics. The ‘war on terror’ serves as the latest guise for the aggressive reassertion of the principle state sovereignty, beyond the traditional limits…
