takiishi chika is not a simple man.

he’s hard to figure out. you can’t read him, hardly anybody can, and it makes it difficult to find things you share interest in. the first one is obvious— each other. otherwise, you wouldn’t be sitting across from him every morning, sharing his space. especially not over coffee.

every morning, without fail, a piping hot cup of black coffee will bring him from an impending threat to society, to whatever one peg lower than that is.

you don’t speak much in the morning, but he allows— or maybe enjoys— you to sit across from him with your coffee and breakfast. it’s peaceful, and quiet, if you’re comfortable being stared at. 

he watches curiously as you dip a thumbprint cookie into your cup and take a bite, washing it down afterwards. when you pull the mug back down, your eyes meet his inquisitive ones. tilting your head at him, you glance down to the other half of your cookie, placing it on a napkin and sliding it over to him with a soft smile. he stares at it, hesitating, before he mimics you. 

he blinks as he chews, and glances at you a few times, not used to being the one stared at. you avert your gaze so he feels like he has some room to breathe, and when you glance back up at him, he’s licking his lips. his expression doesn’t change, but you’re quite certain you know him well enough to gather that he liked it. 

your assumption is confirmed the next time you drag him along with you to the grocery store, when he disappears for five minutes only to return with a box of the cookies in his hand. and when you ask him a few weeks later what he wants from the grocery store, they’re the first item on his list. they run out so much faster when he’s grabbing one alongside you every morning, but you don’t mind.

not when suddenly, the two of you have another thing in common.

is sugishita a big silly stupid dumdum?

my staunch belief is that sugishita is NOT DUMB. hes pretty smart, actually. somehow i fell into the illusion of sugishita being a dumbass, which, of course he is, but, like, hes not dumb, or super naive, or an idiot (an archetypical baka) (affectionate) the way sakura is. see: sugishita not falling for suo's bullshit

but he gloats a little too much about this... maybe hes usually pretty baka stupid but not as much as sakura.

his favorite subject is chemistry! dumdum heads like sakura or kaji either have 0 or have PE as their favorite subject. even if hes interested in it because of gardening, he knows the material.

so heres what i think: i think he gets average grade. ok grades. which is great for somebody who go to bofurin and sleep through class since the 2nd grade. in a normal high school, he would be a good ole just-below-average to average to barely-above-average student. in furin, this would probably put him at the upper quartile of his class. being quiet and socially awkward doesnt mean hes a big dumdum in everything else. hes not good at expressing himself, yes -- i think sugishita's development will likely center around him learning how to express himself and may end with him helping somebody else articulating their feelings, or (framed as unexpectedly) stepping up to a leadership role temporarily, like in a fight -- but, like, that doesnt make him dumb. a stereotypical teenage boy is bad at words but good at science, for example.

heres my headcanon/fanfique(tm): it would be so funny if sugishita is the only one to go to college after graduation. he scores perfectly average in every subject, except for chemistry, which hes solidly miles above average. not genius, not once-in-a-lifetime talent, not award-winning even, but he starts off college already knowing two years worth of a chemist education.

which confound everyone who sees his grades and read his applications. suo and kiryuu passionately discussed and strategized on how sugi can get into college, from local ones to travel-to-tokyo ones, and suo even flirted with the idea of sugi getting into utokyo (too far from home, sugi absolutely cannot be left to his own device in a metropolitan area, chance of getting in ~1%). their homeroom teacher and guidance counselor almost went bald deciding how they should write his recommendation letter (quiet but helpful? righteous anger? he-looks-scary-but-hes-a-good-kid-we-promise?). they werent even sure if he was at college-reading level going into third year (nirei helped. a lot.) at the end, they settle at the nearest college in town, which is fine and decent enough that they harbored some doubt if sugishita is going to get in. umemiya encouraged sugi to apply to several places (just in case).

to the surprise of most (but not suo, kiryuu, or umemiya), sugishita got into college. its a fine one. its close enough that he still lives at home, go to college full time, and work part-time at whatever establishment umemiya now works at (my headcanon is that he starts a farm. kiryuu uses his nepo baby money to be the primary stakeholder). sugi's grades in college is good enough that he contemplated getting a phd at some point. but then he decided, nah, and follow the agricultural science track, graduate, maybe get a masters, and work at the farm with ume-senpai. sometimes, when the local elementary school go to visit, ume pressured sugi into giving them a chemistry-focused tour.

Wind Breaker Chapter 158 spoilers

I have so many thoughts about the latest chapter but there's one thing I couldn't stop thinking about

Takiishi and Sakura parallels

First of all, I love all the character interactions we get this chapter but I wanna grab Endo and shake him so badly.

Like,

Endo, honey, I know you love Takiishi, but your boyfriend is abusive!

It shouldn't make you happy when your partner's kicks don't hurt (because when he hits you they usually do). That's just abuse!

I do ship Endo x Takiishi, but Endo also deserves better!

when he went for so long being able to read people and say what people wanted to hear and thought life would always be boring because people were so easy and then he saw/met a guy who changed his world and against his will he fell in love with him because hes never seen that before and doesnt know if he ever will again . and chiika didn't care about him at all. he just found him a bit annoying. kinda useful at best. but let him stick around. and endo dedicated his life to finding everything chiika liked and making sure he was always comfortable and happy because that's all he can think to do that's how he shows his love. he took any hits (physical emotional whatever) to make sure chiika was okay because he put this guy in the position of god. that IS god to him!!!! you're an angel im a dog type situationship.

and then he met sakura and for the first time realised what it's like to feel that way about a person who actually SEES YOU. and gives you the time of day and attention. who doesn't just see you as an afterthought. but even after all that and finding someone new who he feels that way about he will always go back to chiika. that's all he knows. and at the end of the day that's home. chiika is his master, his god. and maybe he has two now, but chiika has had him around for so long, what if he can't function without endo now? can endo leave and spend every day wondering if chiika is okay without him? he wouldn't want to.

and he sees chiika have a connection with someone else, talk to them as an equal and have his opinion on something change and he has to live with the fact that no matter what he will never be the first choice for the person he will spend his life following and he could never be the person to change his life or change his mind. he's always going to be a test run at best and an afterthought at realistic. his reaction to chiika calling him by his name is so bittersweet. like yeah of course he's happy. but why could he not have been the one to make that happen. why did it have to be umemiya who got chiika to see him. he would never be good enough in chiika's eyes to be recognised for himself.

and he has to be okay with that. who would worship a god who sees them as an equal.

An in-depth of the Takiishi Chika tattoo

With chapter 152, we have a glimpse into the tattoo on Takiishi and Endo's shoulders.

Let's disect it!

Furanki

Breech-loading swivel gun – or Furanki (仏郎機砲, "Frankish gun") in Japanese (Turnbull, 2006) – was one of the first cannons used in Japan. Coming from the Portuguese, these early European models were either called ishibiya (石火矢) or furankihō (フランキ砲) (Gunsen History, 2019), the latter bears similarity with the gun's Chinese name "Folangji", which comes from the Turkish name "Prangi" or Turkic "Farangi" (Chase, 2003). This explains the "Frank" on the tattoo.

I was trying to see if the wheel in the tattoo has any other meanings, but as far as I know, it is simply the wheel of the cannon. The same structure can be observed from Nii Satoru's drawing of the cannon wheel with 4 main spokes and 4 additional, underlying spokes. (Most wheel symbols in Hinduism or Buddhism are eight-spoked wheels).

The right-most part of the tattoo appears to be the rings and the button at the base of the cannon. It is pretty similar to what we'd see with a top-down view of the plan below.

The wolf

The illustration of the wolf was cleverly combined into the cannon. Its hind legs turned into the cannon base while its fur blended into the fire surrounding the cannon.

Wolves have many symbolic meanings, but here I believe Endo was trying to highlight Takiishi's fierceness. Takiishi is an untamed, lone wolf. He doesn't obey the rules; and Takiishi's world, as per Endo's explanation, has no one other than Takiishi (of course until Umemiya makes an entrance).

Name references between Takiishi Chika and Ishibiya

Japanese Ishibiya (石火矢) hand cannons are also early firearms in Japan and have made an appearance in the movie Princess Mononoke.

Rereading tamb rn, and I'm just saying... Mariel sure seems to remind people of their mothers whenever it's her first time physically meeting them. (Chise's utterly distraught expression in the first page kills me every single time btw)

Now, if someone were to just drag fumiki- yori, I mean yori over to meet her by the scruff of his grumpy and reluctant neck, I'm just saying it'd be interesting. Maybe when forgotten memories resurface he'd connect some dots using his own ramblings about red hair and green eyes and foreign ancestry and atavism. Just saying, you know. A humble suggestion, if you will.

Also, I wonder if this effect also applies to people older than Mariel. Do you think Elias saw Mariel and thought of Rahab?

Hmm, I'm surprisingly calmer this chapter (it's the stress i'm telling ya) and so much yapping to be done for EndoChika istg. I'm sorry for sidelining our savior Ume for the nth time, I'll make it up to you king i swear 😭🙏.

My thoughts on Chapter 152 of Wind Breaker so spoilers ahead!

First, the title ("Symbols") is so very fitting let me tell ya.

Secondly, idk why but Sakura being worried for Umemiya is so heart warming 🥹. My son, oh my, have you have grown so much 🥹😭🤧. I hope he gets to do the "babe this isnt you" that other people have said about in previous chapters, but like in the funniest way possible.

Thirdly, this panel of Ume is insane!! LIKE THE EYEE, THIS IS BOFURIN'S LEADER Y'ALL. BEAT HIM UP UME!!

Fourthly, Endo and Takiishi tattoo lore drop??? Not me thinking that tattoo on Endo's left deltoid m. was exclusively for himself then Takiishi takes of his jacket only to reveal the same tattoo as well!?

AND THEN PROCEEDS TO LORE DROP THAT HE DREW THE TATTOO HIMSELF??? Moreover, TAKIISHI AGREED?? these two make me sick (/affectionate)

thinking about early stages of endochika living together and the first time takiishi lets endo remove his extensions. first of all he’s freaking out (permission to touch??!?!!!) doing breathing techniques as he stands behind him not even sure where to start because he doesn’t wanna fuck up and rip any of takiishi’s hair out. but when he touches, takiishi stays still. there’s an ingrained flinch in endo’s body, but takiishi doesn’t actually give him a reason to this time. he kinda forgets they’re sat in front of a mirror and takiishi can wholly see him biting his lip and trying to hold back tears.

and then once they’re out endo feels the level of relief a servant would feel after just barely getting through the kind of task that would grant them a beheading in the case of failure. and then he still has to shampoo and condition him. and it’s not like he hasn’t seen takiishi shirtless— he’s tended to his wounds before. but this is different because for one, he has no injuries at the moment, and two, he is fully naked under that bathrobe.

endo genuinely feels like his brain is unraveling in his head and coming out of his ears at all this intimacy takiishi is letting him indulge in. the tips of his ears are on fire and he’s massaging shampoo into his beloved’s scalp and he mistakes takiishi’s relaxed sinking into the tub as the beginning of a reprimand and he pulls his hands away, only to be grabbed at the wrist and drawn back in. all the weight that drops off his shoulders sinks into his belly.

and he realizes, oh, I can relax now. I don’t have to be so guarded. it’s the most romantic intimacy they’ve ever shared and endo quite honestly can’t fathom how he’s not fainted yet. though he comes very close when takiishi lets out a quiet yet drawn out hum of pleasure when endo finally works his fingers into his scalp without hesitation. suddenly the room is tear-blurred and his ears are ringing but he wouldn’t dare stop at this point.

Okay so we've all noticed that in Wind Breaker, unnatural hair colors are exactly that, unnatural.

So Takiishi's hair is obviously dyed too, right? Especially since the ends are a different color.

Could Endo have influenced his choice of hair color?

I mean, we already know that when Takiishi wanted a tattoo, he just got whatever Endo drew up for him tattooed, so perhaps he'd do the same with dyeing his hair!!

And I think we all can guess why Endo would go for red and yellow when picking colors for the person he describes as a blazing inferno.

Wind Breaker Episode 25 Review + Final Thoughts - Season 3 When?

Haha, Cloverworks just drops three voice actor reveals for Mizuki, Momose and Takiishi and then ends the episode without elaborating if Season 3 is in production. I don’t particularly care that Wind Breaker got a live action adaptation, congratulations, as I care more about when Season 3 news will drop.

Basically, the finale is Umemiya and the other third years telling Sakura, Nirei and Suo about the deeper origins about how Furin came to be. Originally, Furin was a place of chaos like how Sakura initially believed it to be, but five students enrolled into the school as first years and helped shaped the school to become the way it is now. However, there are those who opposed the new change and left, which is why they’re mentioned as shadows of sorts. Endo was one of those shadows and the most infamous one at that. However, there is someone even stronger than him—Chika Takiishi—also the only person that Umemiya admits to have never been able to defeat.

But yeah, it was really interesting to see how Furin became the way it is. I like the fact that not everyone accepts change and the opposers decide to leave. Man, if only people in real life could just disengage with their disdains… The city and school changed for the better and the people within too. Heck, spending time at Furin helped Sakura develop as he originally came to Makochi because he heard about the old Furin, but he’s grown into liking the person he is now with this new Furin. Though, I do wonder how and why Sakura was never updated on outdated information as the changed only happened two years ago—which is still pretty recent.

Though, my favorite part of the episode was the hilarious banter between Sakura and Sugishita as the latter made the funniest faces when he realized Sakura’s group was at the meeting. The way he just crushed the cup and then unfurled it to piss off Sakura was so hilarious. I also love his smirk after Umemiya praised him. They’re so funny together—I need more of their silliness.

The finale ends with the reveal of three new voice actors for the three newly introduced characters. First, we have Mizuki, the third of the Four Kings and he’s voiced by Tomoaki Maeno who you might know as Zhong Li from Genshin Impact and Decim from Death Parade. Regarding Maeno, I initially wanted him to voice Tsubakino before his official VA reveal. I find it funny how my one-off seiyuu speculation came to fruition, but for another character. To be honest, I didn’t expect they’d give Mizuki such a deep voice, yet at the same time, it doesn’t sound off. In my head, I always thought that Mizuki could go either way because his character design is a versatile one as one could go deep and give him a uptight and stoic bespectacled vibe which requires a more masculine voice or a reserved, composed bespectacled vibe which requires a softer one.

Momose, the one that likes to draw, is voiced by Kotaro Nishiyama who has coincidentally voiced another Momose from another anime, specifically My New Boss Is Goofy. To be honest, Momose’s voice is a bit more masculine than I expected, but it’s still a cute voice! If you’re not familiar with Nishiyama, he voiced Ryuichi from Gakuen Babysitters and Atsushi from Boeibu!

I’m sure every Wind Breaker fan who read the manga have been anticipating who Takiishi’s voice actor has been since the anime aired. For me, I originally wanted Takiishi to be voiced by Soma Saito, but he got to voice Seiryu instead. Because of that, I had three other choices in my head. The first choice after Soma was Miyu Irino; the second was Yuki Kaji and the third being Hiroshi Kamiya. Given that Endo is voiced by Daisuke Ono, it definitely felt like the production staff really wanted the OnoD and HiroC combo, hence why Takiishi’s voice actor is the Hiroshi Kamiya. To be honest, I think it’s a good choice as Kamiya can voice the stern, stoic characters very well—he did voice Akashi from Kuroko’s Basketball after all. Also, this shows that the production staff really are going with the pattern of having Shounen Jump MCs be main villains for each antagonistic organization with Kamiya voicing Saiki from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Other examples of this pattern includes Choji who share the same VA as Denji from Chainsaw Man, Natori with Yuuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen and Natsuki Hanae with Tanjiro and Okarun.

Hopefully, news of a third season will be announced soon because I am hyped for the upcoming arc! Also, I do like how a lot of Wind Breaker reactors have the same thumbnail picture of Takiishi. It’s amusing. Let me know your thoughts on the finale!

Final Thoughts 

I felt like this season showed that Wind Breaker is different from the usual delinquent anime in that they have slower moments that focuses on character growth and that it’s not always punches and kicks. The lack of action scenes towards the middle of the season was something some viewers had complaints about as they wanted the action, but I honestly didn’t mind. This isn’t a story with an overarching plot—it’s like vignettes of Sakura’s time at Bofurin and how he becomes the top of the school in the future. Character development is essential for a story like this.

Regarding the major arcs for this season, Keel was a short one, but it was meaningful in that it helps Sakura learn from his shortcomings and develops into the person he wants to be. I honestly love that each arc in Wind Breaker is essential because of the lessons Sakura learns and the people he meets. I think that the Roppo Ichiza arc is a culmination of the stuff Sakura learned in the Keel arc as he behaves a bit differently than he did in the previous arc. It shows that Sakura is someone who listens and learns.

There have been a lot of divisive comments regarding Tsubakino as he is a boy who presents femininely in appearance. I honestly don’t get why people whine about him. Tsubakino is a good representation of the overarching theme of “being true to yourself” in Wind Breaker. He’s confident in what he is and no one is going to stop him. Also, if you think Tsubakino is unsettling, you’re not ready for the fruit apocalypse that is Endo because Tsubakino is just a fruit compared to him.

The other characters introduced are an interesting bunch as Keel are, so far, the only group of people who haven’t been given redemption—and for good reason too. Still, I do like that the story gives such a variety of different characters and they’re all rather different in personality and appearance, so no one gives off a particular “same-face syndrome”. I quite like the Roppo Ichiza crew because they’re so funny.

What surprised and excited me the most about this season was the voice cast because Wind Breaker really likes using big names instead of hiring new faces like a lot of shounen animes tend to do. Season 2 continues with big names like Junya Enoki, Natsuki Hanae, Daisuke Ono and Hiroshi Kamiya. I think that being a voice actor fan and having people speculate and anticipate is also the fun of Wind Breaker!

Most of all, I enjoyed this season because I got to interact with a lot of people, whether it be through this blog or on social media. I think that being able to befriend people and make connections is a beautiful aspect of enjoying something. I hope that same feeling is maintained when season 3 comes out! Burning Alive.

He alone lives in the empty and lifeless world. He fills the world with things he likes. Delicious yet unhealthy food, pretty nails, trendy clothes, colorful hairstyles. Anything he likes will be added in. He can put anything he wants and likes there except living beings.

Because living beings are too weak.

They can't stand his fire.

All those who tried to step in ended up burnt. They coiled in a pitiful state as they burnt to death.

Even the snake who stubbornly slithered around him can't step inside his world. The most the snake could do was to leave this symbol on him. A tattoo. A brand.

It stains his form, but this is what he desired. He had voiced it back then.

This is the only semblance of another living being that can survive in his world.

That is, until that being came.

He stepped inside with a boisterous voice and anger. As usual, he, too, ended up burnt.

But... what is this?

He's still standing. Burnt as he is, that being is still alive. Anger lit his eyes.

"Ahahahaha!!!"

Now, this is new. This is fun.
