I’m once again thinking about my headcanon where Chris Knight (Val’s character in Real Genius) is Ice’s (or maybe even IceMav’s) son. He’s a physics genius that the CIA tried to recruit to create a space laser, tell me that doesn’t fit perfectly into the idea of him being the quirky son of Tom Kazansky??? And you know they’ve approached Ice as the literal COMPACFLT to be like “please get him to join the military, we NEED his brain, he’d revolutionize the weapons development department” and of course Chris wants none of it. I also know, IceMav or not, Chris would be Maverick’s favorite without a a DOUBT. Either he’s Tom and Sarah’s kid, and it’s just a running joke within family and friends how much Chris takes after Mav, or in the case of IceMav, he looks just like his bio dad but other than that, he’s Maverick through and through.

Val Kilmer is dead. That was something that I didn’t expect in 2025. I didn’t really understand how people could cry or feel sad after a celebrity had died, but now i understand. I honestly had so much respect and love for that man. He was such a nice and creative soul, and it really showed through his various performances and projects. If Val Kilmer knew anything, it was how to be the coolest fucking celebrity and make a statement. Val Kilmer was such an inspiration to both actors and artists alike, and I know he’ll be remembered as such. He truly was the better pilot. Rest in peace Val, you’re greatly missed by many.🤍

When I first brought you into this school, I thought you'd be another Einstein. You were well on your way. And then?

I think this is pretty niche but would anyone be up for Chris Knight x Ethan Hunt?
Physics genius x theater kid?
University setting?
Nothing too serious?
I mean-

I just had this idea and it's intriguing somehow but I don't have any clue (yet) where to go with it.

Val Kilmer was my first and deepest celebrity crush. He was cast as Batman just as B:TAS was winding up and that's when it started (I can still talk along with most of Batman Forever even while recognizing that it is Not Good)
Tumblr media
My best friend joined me for an all night Val Kilmer marathon back in the video store days, and we watched everything chronologically, starting with Top Secret!
Tumblr media
Halfway into Real Genius I realized I had seen it once as a kid and it took a LOT of self control not to spoil the popcorn scene for my friend.
Tumblr media
Top Gun of course I had seen already as a good child of the '80s and my father's kid.
Tumblr media
And I already loved Willow deeply. But now I had new appreciation for Iceman and Mad Martigan (why do so many Fury Road gifs show up when you search for Mad Martigan?) (also since I grew up in the pre-IMDB era I maybe only just learned that it's really Madmartigan??)
Tumblr media
The Doors was a complicated one because my friend was a HUGE Jim Morrison devotee and it is a credit to her that she watched it with me anyway. (I'd already seen their clip on the Ed Sullivan show, which she'd recorded somewhere, half a dozen times) (I slept through a lot of that one but I still think he was really well cast)
Thunderheart (I own the score on CD), True Romance, the Real McCoy, meh.
Tombstone of course is really the greatest role he played. If you also love his Doc Holliday may I STRONGLY recommend you read Mary Doria Russell's historical novel Doc, which is extensively researched and corroborates whatever research Val and the screenwriter did for his character. It reads like excellent Tombstone fanfic (in the best way possible).
Tumblr media
Val is the reason I learned how to flip quarters between my fingers, which I did in class through a lot of high school, and which my teachers let me do and stopped at least one other student because I didn't drop the quarters. Watch enough of his movies and you'll see that move, with poker chips, pencils (easier than quarters), whatever's in his hands.
I met an Internet friend from a fan site to see Heat in my local theatre when I was 15 and I didn't tell my parents until after and I don't think my dad has ever been that worried for my safety. (To my 15 yr old brain she was maybe 30 and had definitely driven to my town from more than an hour away, but we were geographically closer to each other that anyone else on that early internet site that I logged onto with AOL)
My wife is already asleep and I just heard the news that he died, and my high school friend is in another timezone where it's also not a normal time to be awake. (The same friend came with me to see The Ghost and the Darkness in the theatre, which is possibly the bloodiest movie I've ever watched)
Did we ever learn what that lump on his elbow is in Heat? Why could I never get my hands on his Billy the Kid? Why didn't I buy Real Genius on DVD yet?
We recently watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and it was a mess of a movie but he was delightful. There are a few others I haven't gotten to that came out once my crush had faded to embers. But it's always ready to come back.

RIP you weird beautiful bastard.

Danny Kaffee might be the lawyer cousin of Mav's that gets him out of the legal trouble Ice can't stop him getting into, but Chris Knight is the cousin of Tom's that creates half the super secret nonsense in the super secret planes that Mav is not-so-secretly the test pilot of at Skunk Works. who do you think invented the laser Bob used in the mission??? one Christopher "no i won't get a haircut, Tom, quit asking" Knight
Ice has spent decades trying to ensure the two never meet despite how Mav thinks it'd be hilarious. Then he gets sick. Of course family will visit. His and his husband's. It just figures Ice has to be bedbound and unable to leave when the two visit at the same time.
