I don't know who needs to hear this, but it's time to move your Trilby to the sacrificial altar
(That sound you're hearing is Trilby coughing and choking on his drink)

The line between the realms of Magick and Technology is at its thinnest today. Everyone affected by it knows it, including the former Prince.
For the next 15 hours, all bets are off. You may ask the slenderkin anything you wish!
And in the meanwhile, I, will be working on something special~

Chapter 3: Aftermath

London
April 2015
Things were fine. Corpses aside, they were fine.
The rain stopped, allowing the ministry agents to swarm the abandoned building. Most of the cultists escaped, but a few slipped up (one literally). With a body discovered and blood on their robes, the government would quietly make examples of them, for any others that dared try human sacrifice. That is, unless they gave up their friends.
None of that had anything to do with Trilby.
He adjusted his grip on the mug of tea, and sighed.
“Anything else, Delaney?”
The woman interviewing him scowled. It'd taken ten minutes but it felt longer, with his soaked clothes sticking to his still wet skin. He had spare clothes in his office, if he ever got there. Maybe he'd get a chance to change before the real interrogation started back at headquarters.
Trilby took a drink of the tea. He'd gotten in trouble again. Somehow, he couldn't bring himself to care. He'd survived. The girl survived. They'd caught some of the sadistic bastards this time. That was a better outcome than anyone could've asked for.
“If that's everything you remember,” the woman, Delaney, said. She looked over her shoulder. Trilby looked in the same direction. He winced.
The girl huddled under a blanket in one of their vehicles. Her hands didn't shake anymore, even wrapped around the mug she held. One of his boys talked to her, distracting her. They'd gotten her initial reaction after she stopped crying enough to talk. She didn't look good though. Looked about as bad as he knew she felt.
Trilby shook his head. She'd never be the same, but no one ever escaped from the Order unscathed. Jill seemed a strong girl. She'd heal and survive… and hopefully, stay out of trouble.
The image of her standing in between himself and Cabadath burned in his mind. No one ever tried to protect him from Cabadath before. The arrogant man could have, perhaps should've, killed her with ease. And yet he'd spared her…
Things were fine, Trilby reminded himself with a quick look around. Things were fine, he thought, as gazes broke away, people returning to their tasks.
Everything was fine. Right?
“Are you going to talk to her?” Trilby said.
Delaney snapped her attention back to Trilby.
“You talk to her,” she said. Another agent called her name and she hurried away. Trilby stood alone in the wet darkness, frowning.
The man talking to Jill stepped aside, answering a phone call. If she noticed the way Trilby watched her, she gave no sign of it. She stared into some middle distance, the smile fading from her face. Her head dropped forward, the bow on her wet ponytail falling down against her cheek.
Why did everyone stare at him, and no one look at her? She needed help. He just needed another scolding.
The click of his dress shoes got her attention. Jill raised her head. The light returned to her eyes, and so did the smile.
“Trilby!” She said.
Internally he sighed. There it was, that impossible charm he held with women. Simone and Siobhan stood out the most but there were others. They approached him, moths drawn to the burning pyre of his life, and all he could do was keep them at arm's length, praying they didn't get hurt by the blaze.
(And yet sometimes, he wished. Yes, he wished…)
“How's the tea?” He said.
She blinked up at him, like he was the best thing in the world. If only she knew.
“It's good,” she said. “Warm.”
“You need to keep warm,” he said. Without thinking, he reached out, tugging at the blanket draped over her head. “Can't have you getting sick on us, hm?”
Jill shook her head in response.
“Do you need anything?” He asked. “More blankets? More tea?”
“I'm alright, for now,” she said. Jill took a deep breath and sighed it back out. “Thank you, though.”
He smiled. Another agent turned away, whispering to the two beside her.
“What happens now?” Jill said.
His smile faded with his sigh. She looked at him like it held all the hope she had left in her body. What did she expect him to say? All he had was the truth.
“You go home,” he said. “You rest. You go to therapy. You heal. It won't be easy. It never is. But you'll be alright, Jill. We'll catch the bastards who did this. They'll never hurt anyone again.”
Her eyes weren't very different from his own, now that he looked closer. The color, at least, almost a match. Jill frowned up at him, not in disappointment but unfortunate curiosity.
“Why are you doing this?” She said. “I mean. How did you get this job? I'm not trying to pry, I'm just… curious.”
Curious. Wasn't everyone? She was a curious little thing herself. But she deserved a decent answer, after all she'd been through.
“I was recruited, years back,” he said. Wasn't much to say but that. It was the truth, just leaving out the unsavory bits.
“Oh,” she said.
Trilby looked away. For all he'd gotten used to being watched, it wasn't often his coworkers doing it. They averted their eyes when he glared, but soon as new people arrived, it all started up again.
“I like your name,” Jill said.
He looked down at her.
“Thanks,” he said. What else was there to say to that?
Jill licked her lips, staring into the cup like it could tell the future. Again, she looked up at him.
“You know, there was a thief named Trilby, years back.”
Trilby blinked.
“Really.”
“A gentleman thief,” she said, "A real classy guy. The kind of guy who could steal anything.”
“I… I see,” he said.
“He disappeared during the 90s sometime. There were reports he'd been caught but nothing ever came of it, not even saying he'd be released. As if he just… Vanished.”
“How do you know all this?” Trilby said.
“I read a lot of books,” she said, a hint of a smile returning to her face. “I think he's fascinating. I wish there was more information about him.”
He shook his head in disbelief.
“I've never heard of the guy before,” he lied.
Her shoulders sagged.
“Oh,” she said, looking into her mug. A few strands of wet hair dropped into her face, but still he saw her eyes, saw how she turned things over in her silence.
“I guess I just thought-” Jill bit her lip. “I thought you might've heard of him. You're the right age!” She laughed, gentle, sheepish. “Nobody I've ever met knows who he is. I guess I shouldn't have hoped.”
Trilby let out a silent breath. She looked up at him again, this Jill Taylor, and something strange ached in his chest.
“Well, I'm sure someone remembers him.” He patted her on the shoulder. “I'll ask around, see if any of my coworkers know anything. Send you a letter in the post, if I find something, how about that?”
Jill smiled.
“Thank you, Trilby.”
And the understanding in her eyes made it all worse. Trilby stepped away, fiddling with his phone. So kids still read books these days? He almost wanted to laugh. Books. Christ, she read about him in books.
He'd gotten too comfortable with his obscurity.
Yes, yes, she was going home soon, that was some comfort. But not enough. Some raw part of him, deep in his bones, whispered her fate to the rest of him. No one who ever cared for him could live. Life proved that, over and over again. She was doomed.
Trilby looked over his shoulder, half expecting to see that looming, black garbed figure again. But all he could see was Jill, just Jill, staring at her tea again.
What a strange girl.
“Trilby?”
That was Carlyle, phone in hand, hurrying towards him fast as he couldn't slip.
“Something wrong?” Trilby said.
Carlyle took a breath.
“You're needed back at headquarters. It's about…” He looked towards the car, gestured towards Jill with his head. Trilby nodded.
“Right. I'll take the girl back with me.”
And then she'd go home and be out of his hair, and his life, forever.
Carlyle looked at Jill again, squinting, then back at Trilby. He opened his mouth, but closed it, and shook his head.
“Here,” he passed over the keys.
Trilby took them. “See you at headquarters.”
Jill didn't speak, curled up in herself in the backseat. She raised her head as he climbed inside. Their eyes met, an uncomfortable instant, before Trilby looked away.
“Where are we going?” She asked.
“Ministry headquarters.” He turned the vehicle on. “They want to ask you some questions. Just a typical interview, we all go through it. You'll be heading home afterwards.”
She didn't say a word. Her eyes closed. The silence didn't feel right.
“It might take a while,” he said. “What you did, it was very…”
Exceptional. Suicidal. Insane.
What he would've done.
“It was very brave,” he finished.
In the mirror he saw her smile, and it was full of pain.
“I'd do it again,” she said, “if I needed to.”
He let out a sigh and kept driving.
“You won't,” Trilby said.
I'll make sure of that, he thought.
