VoicePlay 'Zat You, Santa Claus? - thoughts/commentary
Oh I loved this so much! Over on my "main" blog, BismuthBookshelf, I made a post like a week ago (about my favourite non-VP/Geoff Christmas music videos) where I mentioned how I was wanting more jazzy Christmas music, and this might not be the same sort of vibe as Man With The Bag or I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm, but it's still great! And of course it's wonderful to see J with the group yet again!
Okay so starting off with the set design: Filmed at Pattycake, duh, and the brickwork kinda looks like a set that VoicePlay and/or Geoff have used before (like Geoff's Shenandoah video kinda?), except for the windows and the vertical wood planks. Idk, I'm writing this before the BTS video is out but I'll update it if I figure anything out (EDIT: yeah the woodplanks were added in for this shoot, and maybe the windows too, as the "bricks" aren't actually bricks)
Love all the Christmas decor, like the carousel and the felt/fabric Christmas calendar(?) thing hanging up, and the tree! (How long did that take to set up and decorate? EDIT: actually Layne's wife Cyndi helped a lot with set design!)) And of course the Voiceplay logo symbol on top of the tree is brilliant. At least a few Patrons have already been wishing for that to be an item in VP's merch store. Also the five stockings hanging up have each of the guys' first initials on them! <3 (From closest to camera to furthest away, it's G, C, J, E, & L).
The guys are all looking very snazzy in this video. Love Cesar's scarf, love Layne's red sweater(?) (the most colour that any of them are wearing in the video), and honestly Geoff is really working that long-sleeve black turtleneck, man! 👀 (And obligatory shoutout to Geoff's hair, of course, *chefs kiss*)
I'm of course just typing this all from the Patreon early access thing, but fun fact: this is both the second Christmas video and the second consecutive video of this year to be filmed without an actual cameraman! But unlike using an iPhone like in the previous cases, this was filmed using a robotic camera arm, fully programmed to the music, able to repeat precise movements with each take! I highly doubt Voiceplay are gonna give up on using human camera operators completely, but this is still a cool thing to have as a potential option for video shoots! (EDIT: it's called "Cinebot", and a guy called Ben Meyers helped out with programming/operating it!)
Right, now time to talk more about the vocals and the song arrangement itself!
As per with previous thoughts/commentary posts, most of these notes are after a second watch, with a few extra thoughts mixed in from additional watches, because as I've said before, the first-time watch is just for the vibes
Y'know when I listened to the cover of Zat You Santa Claus on the Peppermint Winter album, I was like "eh it doesn't really have much of a Christmassy vibe imo, gives me more spy movie vibes?" but like with this version I don't even care (the video makes up for it, it's fine), and by the the time you're reading this post, this song will have replaced the old version in my Christmas Spotify playlist!
On my second watch-through, I had the song lyrics up on my phone (while the video played on my laptop), and that made me realize that a few lines got slightly reworded, and then there's a whole section that's not in the original! The bit where they're singing "he's coming for you/hope you've not been bad" or something like that is definitely new, but not new for VoicePlay, because I went back and relistened to the 2012 Peppermint Winter cover and that section is in there as well.
Doing a relisten of their previous cover also made me realise that this arrangement really is different to the older one, even genre-wise, and I like this one more!
Okay I'm gonna do a third watch-through, pausing to take notes as I go, just to make sure I don't miss anything or forget to mention anything here!
A nice bit of whistling from Cesar at the start! (Seriously can everyone whistle except me? 😅)
"Is that you, Santa Claus?" pfft I love the little bit of dramatic flair Geoff put on the delivery of that line 😁
"Are you bringing a present for me?" ooh that harmony at the start of that line! I don't wanna say it's dissonant, because I'm not a music expert and I really don't know, but it sounded "different" and I liked it!
"Something pleasant that you can present; a present for me" this is one of the main line changes, because in the original (and in their 2012 cover as well, in fact), it's "something pleasantly pleasant for me". But sure, why not change it up a bit?
Eli killing it as always!
Oh man I'm almost tempted to make a screenshot compilation just for the "he's coming to get ya" section alone ngl. All their facial expressions are just so great! I feel like I gotta watch this video five times and just focus on a different person each time!
I'm assuming the YouTube description will confirm it (and/or the BTS video), but Patrons are guessing that "Santa" (the one handing over the present) is Tony, which'd make sense (though I'm also guessing that the voice of Santa would be Eli, since he did the same thing in Mission Jingle Bells and Oogie Boogie's Song, and was "Sandy Claws" in Jingle Bell Rock last year.
UPDATE TO THE ABOVE: Nope, that was actually Bucky as Santa Claus! Or as the YouTube description puts it: "Zat Ur Hands? - Bucky Claus" 😂
Omg now I'm just thinking that it would've been really funny if Geoff had subtly sang "Is that you, Sandy Claws", as a fun little double throwback, lol.
Not sure what I love more - Eli killing it on lead vocals yet again, or Geoff just fully grinning as Eli does so 😄
"Who's there, who is it? Are you - stopping for a -" Layne!!! I love him honestly, and it's always great when he gets a little bit of lead vocals.
J's Louis Armstrong impression was freaking amazing, and so was the scatting!
Yeah I love this song and video so much - it's so fun, they all look like they had a great time filming it, and it's such a freaking vibe!
And that's VoicePlay's final song of 2024 (SIKE! We still got Party Of Your Lifetime to come, but hey, I didn't know that when I was first writing up this post!) other than some VoicePlay Minis and stuff (and Party Of Your Lifetime!). I of course have not a single clue what VP has in store for 2025, but that's just part of the greatness of VoicePlay! You never know what you're gonna get next, but it's always gonna be amazing in its own way.
Happy Holidays, and see you soon for both some 2024 roundup posts from me, as well as whatever Voiceplay has been cooking up next! ;)

Carol Wars (Modern Mush Meyers x OC)
Summary: OC is determined to win at Christmas carol charades… maybe too much.
'It’s the most wonderful time of the year!'
The sound of another oncoming Christmas song makes me groan up at the ceiling. Why, oh why does Mush have to be in charge of choosing the music? Just because it’s his house doesn't mean he always gets to pick!
“You’re playing Christmas music again?” I complain.
Across the kitchen he gives me a deeply dramatic look. “It’s December, Gloria! It’s legal!”
“Yeah Mush but you’ve been playing it nonstop. Aren’t you tired of it by now?”
Mush stops icing cookies and his jaw drops. “How can you ever get tired of Christmas music? Back me up, Race!”
The man in question shrugs. “I’m with Gloria. You’ve got a problem.”
Mush rolls his eyes in defeat just as David walks in. “Davey?”
The bookworm looks between us with uncertainty, trying to resolve peace.
“I’m Jewish but I don’t mind listening to Christmas songs.”
Mush pumps his fist up. “Alright! So you can be the one to decide how we end this argument.”
Leave it to Mush to make everything into a debate. Can’t he just accept that too much of a good thing makes it less special? Even though he is dreamy… Especially in that cute green Christmas sweater.
Davey thinks for a second. “Um… You could do Christmas carol charades?”
Mush grins. “Perfect! Gloria, you go first. Race picks a Christmas song and Davey has to guess what it is. The one who scores the most gets to pick which music we listen to next.”
Interesting. It seems plausible. Granted, Mush has a much better vocabulary of Christmas carols than I do. But I can’t back down without a fight!
“Alright. That’s a fair game,” I grin viciously. “Prepare to lose, Mush! We’re about to start blasting out hard rock music!”
“Never!”
So the game begins! Race thinks for a while and leans over to whisper to me: “Rudolph.”
Piece-a cake!
I hold up my hands to my head, trying to show antlers. Davey’s eyes narrow in thought and he starts guessing.
“Head? Hat? Reindeer?”
I nod repeatedly and point to my ruby sweater and then to my nose.
“Red nose? Rudolph?”
“Yes!” I cheer and high-five with Race. “One point for me!”
“Just wait, Gloria!” Mush threatens as Race walks over to give him his own song.
The dreamboat’s brown eyes light up and he pulls a sour frown. Davey and I have to keep from laughing! Mush stubbornly keeps his grouchy face on and points to his heart.
“The Grinch!” Davey guesses through laughter.
“Right on!” Mush grins and claps me on the back. “You’re up, sweetheart!”
Sweetheart. Mush says it so nonchalantly but I can’t ignore Race’s teasing smirk as he leans in again.
“I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus,” he whispers deviously.
I glare daggers at his cheeky face. He knows exactly how I’ll act this one out. Gee, thanks Race. It’s not enough that he knows about my feelings for Mush but now he has to embarrass me even more! But I can’t let Mush win!
I kneel down and pull on the act of looking like a small child. Wide eyes, gaping mouth. Davey already recognizes that I’m imitating Les.
“A small child?”
I hold up a finger to make him stop and march straight to Mush. Before he can ask and before I can back out, I grip his sweater and pull him into a stiff kiss. It feels so nice... Oh, if only it were real. I’ve wanted to tell him for years but don't want to spoil our friendship. Well, too late now! I am going to win!
I finally pull back to stare at Mush’s speechless face. He must think I’m a twisted joke. Race, on the other hand, ignores the tension and starts trying to hold back a fit of chuckles.
“Wow! You actually kissed him! I didn’t think you had the guts.”
Davey awkwardly clears his throat and says: “I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus?”
I nod shakily and move away from Mush, who’s still staring at me. “I win.”
Race shrugs. “Technically it’s a tie but-”
“I win,” I repeat sternly and pivot to walk off into the living room.
Game’s over. End of story. I just had to kiss my best friend to win a game of charades. I deserve the win. Now Christmas is probably going to be weird and I shouldn’t stick around for it. Maybe I should go home early-?
“Knock knock?”
Mush’s soft voice makes me tense up again and I freeze midstep. Curse my stubborn pride! I just had to get over-competitive! Now Mush is gonna taunt me in front of everybody-
“That felt like more than just a nonsense kiss.”
No kidding! That’s because it wasn’t, even though it was supposed to be! And it- Why is he looking at me like that?
“Yeah, about that, um…” I bite my lip and try to discreetly sneak back. “I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.”
In the corner of my eye Mush gets closer and reaches down to lift my chin up. If I weren’t so flustered the sight of his chocolate eyes would be very delightful.
“Me too,” he murmurs gently. Huh? “Can we try it again?”
My brow scrunches. “The kiss or the charades?”
A smile spreads over his adorable face. “Both. I need a rematch.”
In the blink of an eye Mush leans down and captures my lips with his again. But this time we both know it’s real. Not just for a silly game. It’s as if something else has been added to our friendship. Not something that’s spoiling it. If anything, Mush is very encouraging.
“Best Christmas gift ever,” he grins when he pulls back. “You have no clue how long I’ve wanted to do that.”
I shake my head and can’t stop smiling. “You can play any music you want, Mush.”
He pretends to think. “How about All I Want For Christmas is Y-?”
I shove a hand over his cute mouth. “I swear if you pick that overplayed song I’m going to-!”
“What? Kiss me again?” Mush asks excitedly. “Sounds good to me!”
He bends me over for a deeper kiss and I swear he’s trying to squeeze me to death. I should have spoken up a long time ago-
“They’re kissing again!”
Mush and I both tense up and whip out heads around to look at Race, who’s grinning mischievously. He gives us the thumbs-up and dashes back down the hall.
“Albert, you owe me ten bucks!”
We look back at each other and shrug, leaning in for another kiss as Santa Baby starts blaring from the kitchen.

About your hitman WOA providence spy oc, Jocelyn.
what is her relationship with the heralds and the operatives?
so basically Jocelyn pretty much has some.. bad and few good relationships with them
Leader:
Arthur Edwards - Her boss. she hated his guts.. very much. he's also the reason why Jocelyn sided with 47, Diana and Lucas because he ordered a hit on her own father and mother, since her mom was a spy like her. it also caused her to witness her dad's death at a young age.
Previous Constant:
Janus - doesn't know about who this guy is.
The Partners:
Marcus Stuyvesant, Carl Ingram, Alexa Christine Carlisle - she sees these three as her respective second bosses
Heralds:
Eugene Cobb - hasn't heard about him nor met him.
Alexander Fanin - doesn't know who this guy is.
Yuki Yamazaki - close friend, she's the reason Jocelyn is still alive and still sane.
Nolan Cassidy - again, she doesn't know who this guy is.
Don Archibald Yates - she's just neutral about this guy.
Tamara Vidal - still the same. she's just neutral about her.
Operatives:
Otto Wolfgang Ort-Meyer - 47 had told Jocelyn about him. she pretty much wishes this man burns in the deepest pit of hell.
Silvio Caruso - Just sees him as another coworker.
Francesca De Santis - doesn't know who she is.
Reza Zaydan - she doesn't know who he is
Claus Hugo Strandberg - She Hates him very much.
Ken Morgan - still the same, she hates him.
Thomas Cross - Oh let me tell you.. SHE HATED THIS GUY.. FOR ETERNITY because he killed Hannah highmoore. Hannah highmoore was jocelyn's first friend. when she heard Hannah was killed by Jordan, she felt nothing but rage and wrath at Jordan. she will never forgive him.
Erich Soders - Still the same. She. hates. him. she knew he killed his mom and dad. she did hoped this man died in a very gruesome way. (which is good, cus 47 killed him.)
Sierra Knox - Close friend, Jocelyn is pretty much friends with her. she is also aware of jocelyn's condition of her being a diabetic. she is pretty much Jocelyn's "life of the party " type of friend who also spoils her.
Robert Knox - she pretty much sees this man as a father figure.
Zoe Washington - still the same, she sees her as a coworker
Sophia Washington - again, coworker.
Athena Savalas - she doesn't know who she is.

"Interior Scene with a Gentleman Drinking Wine" Claus Meyer (Germany, 1856 - 1919)

Denver Post article from the archives.
no indictment
Evidence voluminous but tricky
Oct. 14, 1999 - They're not even sure how she died. Or when.
And not having the how and when is just one thing that's made it difficult to prove the who in the mystery of JonBenét Ramsey's death.
With no witnesses, no confession and no obvious motive for ending the first-grader's life, the grand jurors probablyly found it difficult to indict a suspect.
But, by all accounts, there are literally roomsful of physical evidence - as of June 1998, Boulder police had logged 1,058 pieces of evidence, tested 500 pieces, interviewed 590 people and logged all their findings in a 30,000-pages case file. That's when police made its pitch to Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter to take the case to a grand jury.
According to search warrant affidavits, investigators removed a veritable warehouse of items from the Ramsey homes in Boulder and Charlevoix, Mich.
Some of the more noteworthy evidence in the case includes:
- The ransom note. The three-page message from "a small foreign faction'' demanded the odd sum of $118,000 for sparing JonBenét from beheading; it urged John Ramsey not to "try to grow a brain'' but to "use that good southern common sense of yours'' and be rested before making the "exhausting'' delivery.
Detectives quickly determined that the note had been written on a pad of paper found in the Ramseys' house, with a Sharpie pen also found in the home.
Convinced that the ransom note had most likely been written at the house, investigators next took writing samples from dozens of people, including John, Patsy Ramsey and Burke Ramsey, John Ramsey's children from his first marriage, former friend Fleet White, Bill McReynolds, who portrayed Santa Claus at the Ramseys' Christmas party, neighbor Joe Barnhill, and others.
Handwriting experts from CBI eliminated John Ramsey as the note's author, but they couldn't do the same for Patsy. Although they collected at least five handwriting samples from Patsy, along with "historic'' samples of things she wrote before JonBenét's death, they could neither eliminate her as the writer, nor say definitively that she was.
Chet Ubowski of CBI wrote of one of her samples that "This handwriting showed indications that the writer was Patsy Ramsey.'' Ubowski told investigators that the samples she gave "do not suggest the full range of her handwriting.''
- The autopsy findings.
When he examined JonBenét's body, Boulder County Coroner John Meyer noted she was wearing a long-sleeved, white knit shirt with a silver star embroidered on the front, and a gold necklace with a cross on it. Her blond hair was in two ponytails and she wore a yellow metal band on her right middle finger, a yellow ID bracelet that bore the name "JonBenét'' on one side and the date 12/25/96'' on the other side.
On the palm of her left hand, someone had drawn a red ink heart.
According to Det. Linda Arndt, who witnessed the autopsy, green Christmas garland, like the garland decorating the spiral staircase in the house, was tangled in her hair.
JonBenét was wearing long underwear, and Benath the long underwear was a pair of white panties with printed rosebuds and the words "Wednesday'' in the waistband. There were urine stains and several red stains. According to a search warrant affidavit, Dr. Meyer told Arndt the stains looked like blood.
Meyer found evidence of vaginal injury, but no semen was found on the body. The coroner also reported that the pubic area appeared to have been wiped with a cloth.
He also noted that a white cord was tied around her right wrist, a similar cord was tied around her neck. Seventeen inches of cord hung from the knot, and the end was tied "in multiple loops around a length of a round tan-brown wooden stick'' according to the coroner's report.
The stick was stained with paint spots and varnish.
He found "deep ligature furrow encircles the entire neck'' and there were hemorrhages and abrasions around the marks, the autopsy report notes.
She had a skull fracture 8.5 inches long. Dr. Meyer was not able to determine whether JonBenét died of a skull fracture or strangulation. And he could not pinpoint a time of death.
- "Foreign'' DNA taken from JonBenét's underpants and fingernails. The DNA left in a stain found in the child's underwear reportedly doesn't match DNA samples provided by dozens of family and friends.
As of May, detectives were collecting additional samples from people who might have had contact with JonBenét before her death, in what sources said was an effort to eliminate as many potential suspects as possible.
- Motive - or lack thereof. Even those convinced that a member of her own family killed JonBenét can't say for sure why they would have done that.
- An imprint, found near JonBenét's body, that detectives believe was made by a Hi-Tec hiking shoe. Reportedly, no one in her family, no one among the family's friends and acquaintances owns a shoe that matches that print.
- A broken window in the basement. Investigators don't know how long the window had been broken, but John Ramsey told investigators he had broken the window once when he locked himself out of the house. Investigators found a spider web was found outside on the window-well grate.
- A palm print found on the wine cellar door. None of the prints taken from family and friends matches the one left on the door.
- Contradictions. John and Patsy Ramsey repeatedly told reporters and police that they put their sleeping daughter to bed as soon as they arrived home from visiting friends on Christmas night. But Coroner John Meyer found pineapple in her stomach, and a bowl of pineapple was sitting in the family's kitchen. The coroner's findings suggest JonBenét had eaten after the family returned home that night. And, the Ramseys both said their son, Burke, was asleep the morning of Dec. 26 until his father awakened him to take him to the Whites' house after police were called. But an enhanced version of the tape of Patsy's 911 call seems to reveal Burke's voice in the background, asking what's going on.
- Items taken from the Ramseys homes during several searches. These items include:
- A flashlight, found on a counter in the Ramseys' kitchen. Sources say investigators believe it could have cause a wound like JonBenét's skull fracture? It was wiped clean of any prints, according to sources.
- The broken paintbrush used to fashion a crude "garrotte'' was linked to Patsy Ramsey's art supplies.
- Duct tape, taken from JonBenét's mouth by her father when he found the body. The tape was analyzed by FBI and detectives purchased identical tape from McGuckin Hardware in Boulder. An Atlanta-area hardware store clerk told investigators that she had helped Patsy Ramsey find duct tape in the store sometime in December 1996, according to a book on the case, "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town.'' But a search of the store's receipts turned up no record of a duct-tape purchase by Patsy Ramsey, the book's author, Lawrence Schiller wrote.
- Computer, computer discs, CD-roms, floppy discs, videotapes and other items were taken in a search for child or even adult pornography. CBI investigator Charles Davis helped Boulder police sift through the computer evidence, but they found nothing. In September 1997, the district attorney's office stated publicly that no pornography had been found on John Ramsey's computer.
- An address book with a sailboat cover from the kitchen.
- 13 recipe cards.

"It's Alex's 21st Birthday, but she's stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive." ~ The Mousetrap (2024)
Simon Phillips is an award-winning British actor, probably best known Netflix show FUBAR with Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Witcher Season 3. He has also cited and won awards for his gruesome portrayal of Santa Claus in Christmas Horror features Once Upon A Time At Christmas and The Nights Before Christmas. His Feature film Butchers, garnered high praise from The Guardian Newspaper stating "It's Phillips' performance that keeps the film's pulse going. His Owen is exhilarating unpredictable, alternating between moments of meticulous villainy and sheer lunacy - one moment he will be refitting a spooky music box while eyeing his oblivious prey, next he will be whacking his victim bloodily, channeling a kind of biblical righteousness that makes him slippery, fascinating and, most importantly, terrifying to watch." He has appeared in feature films with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Mark Hamill, Robert Englund, Rutger Hauer, Richard E. Grant, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, John Malkovich, and Mel Gibson.
