Another rant about tiktok culture
Influencers will turn literally anything into a status symbol, and it's just. Straight out of a mediocre dystopia novel sometimes.
I especially notice it with matcha - I really enjoy a good matcha latte, so I'll watch people make matcha, and all of a sudden I'm on matcha tiktok.
Now, in case you're not familiar with how matcha works, there's two main types: culinary (generally stronger so it can go in food and drinks and not lose flavor, not super pleasant to drink on its own, on the cheaper side bc it doesn't need to be as fine) and ceremonial (very fine, very expensive, milder taste, meant for tea ceremonies and not for mixing into things. usually has a more clear green colour where culinary, being less exact about quality, can be yellower)
There's plenty of 'universal' grade matcha as well, which is kind of a middle between the two. Can be used for either, comparatively mid-range in price, jack of all traits type matcha. This is what I use to make my little lattes, I think clearspring's universal grade is really good for the price.
But, this is matcha tiktok. These are matcha influencers. And you know they're gonna get weird and elitist about it.
So it's just video after video of people dumping stupid amounts of wildly expensive ceremonial grade matcha into their huge cups of oat milk and like three different syrups, showing off all their empty tins of the priciest most popular matcha brands, posting 'when there's a matcha shortage but your stock looks like this', and it's just. Kinda pathetic.
It's tea.
It's fancy tea that you're paying several dollars per gram for, and you're wasting it by pouring it into a latte full of strawberry jam or whatever, and in a few years you'll declare it cringe and unfashionable just like you will and have with every other east-asian thing that's trendy with white people, because you have zero respect for the culture it comes from, you just heard it's expensive and pretty and that fits in with your whole aesthetic of 'i'm wealthy and lead an effortlessly beautiful life'. But girl, my broke ass recognizes your aliexpress and flying tiger cups too.
And like, if we'd read this in a dystopian teen book ten years ago, we would've rolled our eyes at it, wouldn't we? Yeah yeah, culture so busted people are trying to prove their wealth by wasting the most expensive tea they can find.
Anyway. Long post lol. Status symbol culture just annoys me.

Hotels and other accommodation for asylum seekers will cost the British taxpayer £15 billion over 10 years
This is equivalent to £4 million a day and is more than triple the Government’s original estimate, the National Audit Office has revealed.
The NAO’s breakdown also showed that at the end of last year 4,000 failed asylum seekers were still being provided with taxpayer-funded accommodation because they had shown they were ‘destitute’.
The Mail Online reports: Contracts were originally forecast to cost £4.5 billion over a decade from 2019 but are now expected to run to £15.3 billion over same period, after the Channel crisis exploded.
It means that on average the taxpayer will spend £4,191,780 a day on housing asylum seekers over the life of the contracts.
A separate breakdown from the NAO showed overall costs in 2024-25 were £1.67 billion.
That amounted to £4,567,123 a day on average, or £3,172 a minute.
Asylum hotels “may be more profitable” for companies holding the contracts than other types of housing, the Government’s official auditors said.
The Home Office awarded the 10-year contracts to three suppliers in 2019 – Clearsprings Ready Homes, Mears Group and Serco – which each operate two or three UK regions each.

thinking about all the little locations in skyrim that don’t get that much reputation but could be GREAT for worldbuilding. Kjenstag Ruins, probably named for a long-forgotten Nord hero. Clearspring Tarn, where hunters come to make coin off the thirsty deer. Evergreen Grove, a tiny little pond ripe with nirnroot that many an alchemist has perished at due to the Spriggans it holds.
Just all the little natural glades and places that aren’t chock full of treasure or enemies but still hold beauty in their own right a decade or so later

The U.K. government’s asylum housing costs are projected to triple to £15.3 billion over the next decade, far exceeding initial estimates, due to increased small boat arrivals and reliance on expensive accommodations like hotels.
Private firms (Serco, Clearsprings, Mears) profit from lucrative contracts, with hotels accounting for 76% of recent spending—costing taxpayers £4.56 million daily, equivalent to building a small hospital monthly.
The report fuels public anger, with Reform UK gaining traction by demanding deportations, while Conservatives accuse Labour of failing to control costs or borders despite processing more asylum claims.
The crisis stems from years of weak border enforcement and policy delays, with the NAO warning costs could quadruple without urgent action, straining public services like health and education.
The U.K. faces a clash between humanitarian obligations and fiscal responsibility, with growing pressure to end asylum hotels and tighten borders amid rising migration-driven debt and polarization.
