How Portlink Supports Medical and Pharmaceutical Logistics
By Gloria Sewor
Medical logistics doesn’t come with a second chance.
Whether it’s vaccines, surgical equipment, or antimalarial drugs, the margin for error is razor-thin. A few degrees off in temperature, an hour too long in customs, or one missed document—any of these can make a shipment unusable. And unlike other cargo, there’s often a human consequence attached.
At PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, we’ve learned—sometimes the hard way—that transporting pharmaceuticals isn’t about just moving boxes. It’s about precision, timing, and care.
And in Ghana, where the demand for quality healthcare delivery continues to grow, the need for dependable medical logistics is only becoming more urgent.
A Different Kind of Cargo
Medical and pharmaceutical shipments are unlike other freight in several important ways:
Time-sensitive: Some drugs and supplies have expiry windows so tight, even a short delay can lead to rejection.
Temperature-controlled: Cold chain integrity is non-negotiable. A broken cold chain often means wasted inventory.
Highly regulated: Customs clearance for medical goods involves extra paperwork, permits, and often, verification from health authorities.
High-stakes: A delay in a shipment of blood bags or diagnostic kits can derail entire hospital programs or outreach campaigns.
You don’t just plan these shipments. You choreograph them.
The Systems We Put in Place
At PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, supporting pharmaceutical and medical logistics means being proactive on multiple levels. Here’s how we handle it:
1. Cold Chain Management
We work closely with partners who provide temperature-controlled containers—refrigerated trucks, insulated pallet boxes, and, where needed, gel-packed cartons for last-mile delivery.
We also monitor temperature using data loggers or IoT sensors, allowing us to verify the cold chain remained intact throughout transit. There’s no room for guessing.
2. Rapid Customs Clearance
Pharmaceuticals can’t wait for slow clearance. We pre-process documentation before the shipment even arrives at the port. That includes obtaining the necessary permits from Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and securing exemptions or fast-track approvals when applicable.
For one recent government consignment of pediatric medicines, our customs brokers coordinated with port health officers to ensure real-time clearance. From touchdown to warehouse, it took less than 24 hours.
3. Secure Warehousing
We offer bonded warehouse options with temperature-controlled storage zones—ideal for medicines awaiting distribution or quality inspections.
Our facilities near Kotoka International Airport allow for quick access and safe short-term holding while last-mile delivery is arranged. Especially useful for donor-funded medical shipments entering the country.
4. Trained Handling Staff
Moving medicine is not like moving paper or electronics. Our staff are trained to follow Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards—wearing gloves when necessary, avoiding unnecessary exposure, and documenting every transfer of custody.
Case Study: Rural Vaccine Distribution
A real-world example: In late 2023, we supported a major vaccination rollout in partnership with a public health NGO. The vaccines needed to move from Accra to six regions, including some of Ghana’s most remote districts.
With limited cold storage in those areas, we had to build a mobile distribution plan—using insulated vans and trained couriers who could deliver doses directly to clinics within set temperature windows.
Delays would’ve compromised the entire batch.
It wasn’t easy. Roads washed out. One freezer truck broke down mid-route. But we adapted, rerouted, and finished delivery within 72 hours. That program reached over 50,000 children.
It’s something I still think about.
Proud to Share Our Story Globally
This year, PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, based in Ghana, is a nominee for the 2025 Go Global Awards, hosted by the International Trade Council in London this November.
The event isn’t just a celebration—it’s a global exchange of ideas. Businesses from around the world, sharing innovations, solving shared challenges, and forging partnerships across borders. For us, it's a chance to learn from others and also to showcase how African logistics companies are stepping up—not just commercially, but in areas like healthcare and community well-being.
We’re honored to be part of it.
Final Thought
Medical logistics isn’t glamorous. It’s quiet, precise, and full of pressure.
But when you get it right, lives are improved—or even saved. That’s why we treat every shipment of medicine, every crate of supplies, as something far more than freight. It’s responsibility. It’s trust.
And at PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, we take that trust seriously. Every day. Every delivery.

The Rise of Temperature-Controlled Logistics in West Africa
By EUGENIA EYRAM OPEKU
Temperature-sensitive cargo has never been more in demand—or more vulnerable.
Whether it’s vaccines requiring stable cold chains or perishable foods traveling across borders, the logistics of keeping cargo within a specific temperature range has quietly become one of the most critical concerns in West Africa’s supply chain evolution. Yet, it’s still a topic often overlooked in public discussions. Maybe it’s because it feels too technical or niche. Or perhaps because many assume it's only a priority for pharmaceutical giants or massive food distributors.
But the reality is different.
Across Ghana and neighboring countries, temperature-controlled logistics—also known as cold chain logistics—is not just rising. It’s reshaping how we think about reliability, public health, and regional trade potential. There’s a whole ecosystem growing around it, quietly but steadily.
Let me paint a picture.
A small-scale strawberry farmer in the Eastern Region of Ghana has managed to cultivate a high-quality crop. The challenge isn’t the growing. It’s the journey—keeping the strawberries cool enough so they don’t perish before reaching markets in Accra or beyond. Without temperature-controlled trucks, his products are unlikely to survive the journey intact. The result? Lost income. Wasted food. And a missed opportunity for trade growth.
Now multiply that scenario across hundreds of small-scale producers across the region. The opportunity cost is enormous.
That’s where temperature-controlled logistics steps in. It’s not just about adding a cooling unit to a truck. It's a system—integrated, monitored, and adapted to local realities. At PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, we’ve had to learn that lesson through practical experience. We once handled a shipment of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals bound for a health facility in Tamale. The challenge wasn’t just keeping the cargo cold. It was managing unpredictable road conditions, intermittent power at storage points, and real-time tracking to ensure nothing went wrong.
Things almost did go wrong. We encountered unexpected delays at a checkpoint, and there was a brief moment where internal container temperature spiked. Our team had contingency protocols in place—extra insulation, backup cooling units, and constant remote monitoring. The cargo arrived safely. But it could have gone another way if not for that attention to detail.
That’s the reality of cold chain logistics in our region—it’s a game of anticipation.
But here’s the exciting part. As demand grows, so does innovation. We're seeing investments in solar-powered cold rooms for rural areas. Data loggers that alert handlers via mobile apps if temperatures go off-range. And perhaps most importantly, more awareness from clients themselves who are beginning to ask the right questions about how their goods are handled.
Now, why does this matter at a macro level?
Well, West Africa is poised to play a more significant role in global trade. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is gaining momentum, and with it, the need for more reliable, scalable logistics infrastructure. If we want to export more food, medicine, or even cosmetics—temperature stability becomes non-negotiable.
And Ghana, I believe, is well-positioned to lead in this area.
As the author and someone deeply engaged in this space, I also want to share something we’re proud of. My company, PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, has been nominated for the 2025 Go Global Awards, hosted by the International Trade Council. The event will be held in London this coming 18th–19th November. It’s not just an awards ceremony—it’s more of a convergence. A space where the best minds in global business meet. A space to share insights, form partnerships, and figure out how we all adapt in this rapidly shifting world.
Being part of that dialogue means something. It tells us that what we’re doing here in Ghana—whether it’s optimizing cold chains or finding creative solutions to regional challenges—is gaining recognition. And that gives me hope.
Because cold chain development isn’t only a technical goal. It’s a human one. It’s about ensuring children get safe vaccines. That food arrives fresh. That small producers don’t lose out because of preventable spoilage. It’s also about trust—because no one wants to do business with a supply chain that lets products rot in transit.
There’s still a long way to go. Infrastructure gaps, erratic electricity supply, and high equipment costs all pose real obstacles. But step by step, company by company, West Africa is moving forward.
Maybe the best part is that we don’t have to solve it all at once. Sometimes, it’s enough to solve one piece well—like a single shipment, delivered safely, against all odds.
That’s how change begins.
